Sitting on the riverbank, Dee and Ryo pulled their hiking boots and socks off, dipping their tired, aching feet into the chilly water. It was a surprisingly hot day, despite it being mid-October; perhaps a little too hot for hiking, but then it had been a lot cooler early that morning when they'd set out. Now it was just after midday, the sun was high in a clear blue sky, and when they'd spotted the creek from the top of the ridge, they'd scrambled down to it as fast as they could.
"You know what would be really great about now?" Dee asked, not waiting for a reply. "A cold beer."
"Mm," Ryo agreed vaguely. He'd flopped onto his back on the grassy bank, feet still in the water. "I'd settle for a soda, or juice, but all we've got with us is warm water and hot coffee."
Leaning back on his elbows, Dee glanced at his lover. "Too bad we didn't know it was gonna get this warm. Least we can cool off a bit; my feet feel better already."
"Just watch out for fish nibbling your toes," Ryo joked.
"They wouldn't, would they?" Dee leaned forward, checking the water for hungry fish.
Ryo laughed. "Probably not, but even if they did, this creek's too shallow for anything big enough to do any harm." Sitting up, he pulled his backpack closer. "We might as well eat while we're sitting here, before our sandwiches melt."
"Good thinkin'; it'll mean less to carry." Dee dug into his own backpack, pulling out a bottle of water and a packed lunch.
The water rippled coolly around their feet as they ate, while birds chirped in the trees, and butterflies fluttered about. Winter was only weeks away, but today it still felt like summer.
