David made it back to the hole in time to see Regina yelling at the workers. "What was that? What the hell was that? You said you could do this" she yelled. David walked up to her. "Regina calm down. We'll figure out a way to save them" he said. Regina turned to face David. "They could have killed our children! Don't you care" she asked. David glared at her frustrated. He was trying to help her and James get Henry back. Why couldn't she just let the past be the past. "Of course I care. Emma's down there and she hates me and I may never see her again but us losing it on people who are just trying to help isn't going to help them or Archie" David yelled. He let out a sigh of relief. That felt good. Marco and Graham walked up to them. "If we knew exactly where they were, we could drill down to them" Marco said. Pongo started barking from crazily from one of the firetrucks. David noticed and looked over at him.
"Maybe we could rig something to bring them back up" Marco said as David ran over to the truck. He opened the door and let Pongo out. "Drill where" Graham asked. "Come on, buddy" David said to Pongo. "What are you thinking" David asked as Pongo moved deeper into the field and David followed. "It's Archie's dog" David said. Graham Regina and Marco started following behind David. Pongo continued walking sniffing the ground but stopped when he found something" He's found something" David said. Pongo started to whine. "Look, this is where it must be. What is it" David asked. "Good boy" David said petting Pongo. Graham started moving the dirt revealing a slab of wood covering a grate. Him and Marco moved the slab away revealing a grate in the ground. Regina looked at it in surprise. "What is that" David asked. "It's an air shaft. It leads down to the mines" Graham said. Everyone looked up at him.
Down in the mines Emma woke up. She tried to get up but she felt a sharp pain going into her leg. "Ow" she yelled trying to get up. Just then a woman walked up to her. "Don't try to get up. I think your leg might be broken. Just sit back down and I'll help you with that" the woman said. Emma did as the woman said and sat back down. When she looked up she was shocked at what she saw. Her grandmother standing in front her smiling down at her. She recognized her from the book. That couldn't be possible. James told her father he had killed her. Henry was right. Maleficent put a wet cloth on her forehead. "I'm not a doctor but I think you might have a concussion to. That was a pretty nasty fall" she said patting Emma's forehead with the cloth. Emma just stared at her grandmother. She couldn't believe she was meeting her. David had told her so many stories about her. Maleficent noticed Emma staring. "What" she asked the girl who was staring at her for some strange reason.
"Do you know who I am" Emma asked. Maleficent shook her head and looked at the girl then it hit her. She had David's eyes and Maleficent got the same warming and caring feeling looking into Emma's eyes that she got looking into her sons. "Your my granddaughter aren't you" she asked. Emma nodded her head. "I'm Emma" she said. Maleficent smiled at her. "It's nice too meet you Emma" she said. "Dad's told me so much about you" Emma said. Maleficent frowned. "I'm sure they weren't the greatest of things seeing as my son hates me but I assure you I'm not that bad" she said. Emma looked at her confused. "What are you talking about? Dad doesn't hate you. He loves you" she said. Now Maleficent looked at her confused. "James said David hated me and wanted nothing to do with me" she said. Emma rolled her eyes. Of course James would lie to keep her dad from finding his mother. "James lied to you. Dad's been searching for you. James told him you were dead" Emma said.
"Why would James do that" Maleficent asked. "He wants to destroy dad's life anyway he can. This stupid curse, keeping our family torn apart and keeping him away from you" Emma said. "So David's not mad at me" Maleficent asked. Emma shook her head. "He spent a week looking for you then James told him you were dead so he stopped looking. Dad was really upset when he found out" she said. Maleficent smiled a big weight lifted off her heart. David didn't hate her. "No offense grandma but your sons kind of a dick" Emma said. Maleficent laughed and shook her head. "He wasn't always. He used to be sweet and kind. Him and David were even friends and liked each other back then" she said. Emma nodded. "I know dad told me" Emma said. Maleficent looked at Emma's leg. "Let me rebandage that leg" she said. "What happened between them" Emma asked. Maleficent just looked at her. "Dad doesn't talk about it at all" Emma said. Maleficent sighed.
"That's not my place to talk about" Maleficent said. Emma sighed frustrated. "I'm not a baby. I can handle it. Dad doesn't trust me to be able to but I can" Emma said. Maleficent shook her head. "I'm sure he trusts you" she said. "Then why won't he tell me what happened between him and Uncle James" Emma asked. Maleficent sat down next to Emma. "That night was very hard for your father. He lost his best friend and his brother. He never talked to me about it either. I think it's cause he's scared" Maleficent said. "Scared of what" Emma asked. "I think he's scared that we'll all look at him how he feels about himself" Maleficent said. Emma looked at her confused. "Your father is a very loving man. He's kind brave and strong but your father keeps a lot in and doesn't let anyone in not even your mother. He's always so hard on himself and I think he believes that what happened was his fault and there is some part of him that believes he deserves what James and Regina have done to him separating his family for what happened to them" Maleficent said.
"Was it his fault" Emma asked. Maleficent shook her head. "No it wasn't. It was your grandfather but James has always blamed both of them and I think your father believes what your grandfather did to James and Regina is his fault" she said. Before Emma could answer the mines started to shake again. They both looked up. "Something's happening" Maleficent said. "Dad" Emma said under her breath knowing her father was coming for her.
Back on the surface Marco attached a hook to the grate. "All right. Gun it" David called to Ruby. Ruby stepped on the gas of the truck she was using while Graham used a crowbar to get the grate up. The grate came up. "All right, stop. We got it" David said. Graham moved the grate away while David kneeled down. "All right" he said looking down the hole. Regina and Graham also looked down it. "So, what's next" Regina asked. David looked up at Regina. "We get our children back" he said. Marco tied a rope to the hook. "We need to lower someone straight down or the line will collapse the sides of the shaft" Marco said. "I've got the harness" Graham said. "Lower me down" Regina said. David shook his head. "Oh, no way. I'm going" David said. "My son is down there" Regina yelled at him. "So is my daughter. You've been sitting behind a desk for 18 years. I can do this. I'll bring them both back up. I promise" David said.
Regina thought for a moment. James trusted David once before and it screwed them then. She didn't want history to repeat itself but Emma was also down there and David wouldn't let anything happen to her. She sighed. "Fine but you bring him up first" Regina said. David thought for a minute. He didn't want to leave Emma down there any longer than she had to be but if this was the only way Regina would agree to let him go down then he would take it. He wasn't trusting her to bring Emma back up. For all he knew she would trap her deeper in the mines with whatever her and James were hiding down there. "Fine. I'll bring Henry up first" David said. Regina nodded. He went to walk away but Regina grabbed his arm. David turned and looked at her. "I'm trusting you. Don't make me regret this" she said. He nodded. "I won't" he said walking over to his truck taking off his coat and throwing it in the hatchback. Regina watched David. If she wound up regretting this he would lose everything she would make sure of it.
