The Rebel Mermaids

Zac and Cam are on Mako Island, setting up camp for the night. It is a clear night with the full moon lit up brightly.

"Wow, that was a great catch Cam!" said Zac.

"Yeah and now you have to pitch the tent," replied Cam.

"What, why do I have to do that?" asked Zac.

"A deal is a deal; I caught the fish now you have to set up the tent," said Cam.

"Ok, fine!"

Zac then left and began setting up the tent.

Later that evening

Zac and Cam have set up their tent in a clearing on the island and are relaxing, roasting some marshmallows on a campfire they have lit.

"Hey Cam, I'm just going out into the woods to relieve myself." Zac said.

"Ok, be careful out there." Cam replied.

Zac walked into the forest until he saw a strange rock outcrop. The rock appeared to have some symbols on it. Zac continued to walk closer and was just a few metres away when he saw the rock suddenly vanished. In its place was an opening leading towards a small cave.

Zac was feeling curious and couldn't help himself as he walked up to the cave opening. He continued on, entering the cave until reaching a wall which had a trident symbol on it. The trident glowed a bright blue colour, and Zac touched the symbol. No sooner had he touched it, he could feel the ground give way and he fell straight through. As he was falling, he looked down and saw a bubbling pool. Zac fell into the pool with a tremendous splash.

A few minutes later

Zac had recovered from the fall into the pool and quickly swam to the surface. As he did so, he could feel something was not right with his body. His legs appeared to be one solid muscle, and when he surfaced he looked towards his feet and saw in place of his legs was a giant blue fish tail. Zac panicked and was unsure what to do, until he saw three mermaids appear out of nowhere. Two of them had blonde hair and the other was a brunette.

"Well look what we found!" exclaimed one of the blonde mermaids.

"Wait, isn't that Zac Blakely?" said the brunette.

"Guys let's just get him out of the pool back onto land," replied the third mermaid.

As soon as Zac saw the three mermaids, he let out a scream and tried to swim away. The brunette grabbed him and restrained him.

"What the hell are you and how do you know my name?" Zac yelled out.

"It's a long story," replied the brunette. "I'm Mimmi, and these are my two friends Lyla and Isabella."

Mimmi carried Zac out of the pool, with Lyla and Isabella also lifting themselves out of the water. Mimmi soon reached out with her hand, and Zac could feel a tingling sensation with steam coming out from his tail. After a minute, Zac was back to his usual self.

Whilst Mimmi was returning Zac to his human state, Lyla and Isabella also did the same to their tails, with the two mermaids once in human form also doing the same to Mimmi.

"Wait, how did you guys do all that?" asked Zac.

"It's called magic," replied Lyla. "Every mermaid who trains their skills is able to get a moon ring, just like this one," as Lyla showed Zac the ring she was wearing. It had a light blue gemstone attached to it. "A moon ring allows us mermaids to cast many spells, including one to get legs just like humans."

"But how come I have a freaking fish tail like you three?"

"That's because you are a merman, or to be more precise a half merman half human" answered Isabella.

"How is that even possible!? My parents are both human!" exclaimed Zac.

"You'll understand when we tell you the full story," replied Mimmi. "I know you're exhausted and it's best if you just go back home."

"But what about my friend Cam?" asked Zac.

"Oh, he can surely find his own way off the island. Come on Zac, I'll be your friend" answered Lyla.

"I don't need some girly mermaids to help me! I'll figure this out on my own!" exclaimed Zac. He then angrily re-entered the water and with his newfound merman tail swam out of the pool into the open sea.

Lyla, Mimmi and Isabella then took stock of the situation.

"I'm sure Zac will come around soon; he has to if he is to survive as a merman," said Lyla.

"Why don't we go to his house. I'm sure Dr Blakely will be glad to have us over," answered Isabella.

The three mermaids also swam out of the pool, heading for the mainland.

At Zac's house

After a frantic swim, Zac arrived at his house on the waterfront. He hauled himself out of the water but was unsure how to activate the so-called magic used by the mermaids at the Mako pool. He quickly grabbed a towel nearby and began drying off his tail. It took a few minutes, but the towel had the same effect and Zac was back in his normal human state.

He walked into the guest house where he usually relaxed but was shocked to see his dad and the three mermaids who were waiting for him.

"Dad, what the hell are you doing with these three girls!" exclaimed Zac.

"Zac, I know I've lied to you from the start, but it was to protect you. You weren't ready to handle all this," replied Dr Blakely.

"Before you were born, your father met a mermaid just like me. She was Nerissa, and there were many legends about her. She was believed to be the most powerful mermaid of all time, and she led a rebellion against the mermaid colonisation of Sun Coast." Mimmi answered.

"So you're telling me that mum is not my true mum?" Zac announced.

"Yes, and these three mermaid girls were close friends of your birth mum Nerissa. They helped each other out on various missions around Mako Island and Sun Coast," replied Dr Blakely.

"So what was the deal with mermaids and this so-called colonisation?" asked Zac.

"A long time ago, mermaids were confined to the sea. We stayed offshore in the deep Pacific, but some mermaids didn't like that. They wanted full power to rule over all other creatures including humans on land. Your birth mother Nerissa tried to stop that from happening, and she called on us to help her stop the mermaid colonisers." Isabella spoke up.

"We like to call ourselves 'The Rebel Mermaids'. Fitting for a group who fought against the flawed ideology of past mermaids," answered Lyla.

"So can I go on missions with you guys then?" asked Zac.

"I don't think you're ready yet," replied Isabella. "We must train you how to use your powers first."
