Ch.8 Encounter and Confrontation
Sunlight filters in as the train leaves the tunnel and the view from the windows reveals a forest of trees. The darkness in the distance gives a feeling of mystery like the forests between towns hold secrets. The train passes by a bush covered in purple flowers as Serah marks down a scratch on a piece of paper she holds on her lap.
Legoshi, sitting next to her, asks "What are you doing?" He looks at the sheet and then at Serah as she stares back.
She answers "I sometimes like to play little games to pass the time on the train. I'm marking down every time I see a flower near the tracks." Another patch of flowers passes by as she draws another scratch mark on the paper.
Legoshi looks out towards the forest and asks curiously "How long does it usually take to reach your hometown by train?" The train reaches a mountainside with a tunnel that the train can drive through.
Serah explains as she checks her phone messages "Only a couple of hours, it's not usually busy on this line, and there's not a stop on the way since the town sits by the ocean like the city."
Legoshi nods and thinks 'I got to make a good first impression on her family. I just hope that they don't have any problems with me, especially since…' Legoshi's musings were interrupted by the train leaving the tunnel and a modest town next to the sea. Towards the train station on the farthest side of town away from the ocean are many gas stations and small stores with a big department store near the middle.
The middle of the town is composed of housing with a few traditional inns towards the west side and regular housing taking up the eastern side. The side of town towards the ocean is composed of a pier taking up the left side towards a cliff face.
Legoshi looks out the window in slight awe and fascination as Serah states "Welcome to Fatum." He takes in every inch of the town that he can see, and he also notices a house a walk from the left edge of town. He stares at that house for a small moment, wondering who would build a house there.
Opening song: Prism by AmPm ft. Miyuna (TV Version)
(0:00-0:10)
The letters of the title 'Beastars' appear with every accented note of the piano as the blue background starts showing small ripples of water matching the accents. It then shifts into a scene of Serah wearing her hair down and wearing a loose-fitting long-sleeved white button-up and a calf-length brown skirt on a rocky shore of the ocean with a town in the background.
(0:10-0:21)
A wave splashes and sprays in front of her as a flashback in the background shows behind her of her younger self and a woman with medium-length bright blue hair wearing a pink sundress and a male wolf with a bodybuilder wearing a tank top and shorts as they play in the shallow part of a beach. A small tear falls down the teenage Serah's cheek as the wind blows her hair back with white petals blown in the wind
(0:21-0:30)
The scene changes to Legoshi wearing a red short sleeve hoodie and black shorts looking at his right paw while standing in a graveyard with vibrant flowers on the tombstone in front of him. A flashback in the background shows the first time he met Serah in his almost devouring with the moon glowing in the sky. The current Legoshi now faces forward with a look of determination as the wind blows his fur with blue petals in the wind.
(0:30-0:34)
A quick scene of Cherryton Academy with the silhouettes of Jack, Haru, Bill, and Juno, who are all smiling, appears before a quick shadow overcast like a train passing by an electrical pole changes the scene.
(0:34-0:39)
The scene changes to a small town next to the ocean with the silhouettes of an elderly human, wearing a white martial arts gi, with a stern expression, and an elderly woman, wearing a yellow kimono, with a gentle warm smile, the same shadow appears again to change the scene.
(0:39-0:44)
A final scene change shows the Black Market with the silhouettes of Gouhin and Louis appearing, with Louis facing away with a small side glance, as a lion's shadow starts to appear behind Louis, almost like a phantom ready to consume him. A slide transition switches the scene to a water-painted version of the crossroads of the city.
(0:44-1:04)
Serah and Legoshi are walking side by side in a casual stride down the middle of the road as the many characters are standing and waving at the two including Legoshi's roommates and club mates, Haru, Louis, Gouhin, and Serah's father. It ends with the two walking past spectral silhouettes of Leano, Serah's mother, and a white-cloaked woman with long flowing white hair peeking out and a small smile peeking under her hood.
(1:04-1:24)
A wipe transition changes Serah into a bright yellow ball gown with shoulder-length yellow gloves and Legoshi wearing a blue and white with yellow accents 3-piece suit as they both dance a ballroom dance to the music. They are in space on an invisible floor with brilliant stars and cosmic colors dancing around them as they twirl and spin around with the Earth in the distance.
(1:24-1:30)
They both stop as they turn back to their regular clothes with a beach sunset behind them, their faces close together as they stare lovingly into each other's eyes. They lean in closer, getting ready to kiss as small blushes appear on their cheeks. The screen fades to black with a bright shooting star flying in an arc across the screen as the music ends.
Fatum Station
The sun hangs high in the sky as the heat hangs in the atmosphere like a dense fog. The lack of wind makes it difficult for most people to handle the heat as they are forced to wear short and absorbing clothing. This goes especially for the fur-covered species, as they try to keep themselves under shade while using paper fans to keep cool. This wave of heat leaves a major impact on Legoshi as he and Serah wait at the station.
Serah places a towel on Legoshi's head as she apologizes "Sorry, I wasn't told when someone was gonna pick us up." She takes Legoshi's hand and guides him to a nearby convenience store to get out of the heat. The AC acts as a refreshing breeze to Legoshi as Serah leaves him next to a magazine stand. She then purchases a couple of bottles of water and hands one to Legoshi as they stare at the street through the window.
Legoshi asks in a curious tone "Why does your hometown celebrate harvest during summer?"
Serah sees a passing couple of a human male and female tiger as she explains "It's a tradition that started because of a legend in our village. About how a Maiden of the Stars came to this village during its infancy when it was experiencing famine. She used something like magic to summon rain and brought life back to the land." A passing small group of teenage boys pass by as she finishes "I was told that it occurred during the middle of summer, the maiden stayed for a few days, then left in only a few days." A car passes by as she looks at some of the magazines on the rack, including a couple manga volumes for a superhero shonen series.
Legoshi nods as he takes another sip of water and notices a dark blue SUV parking in front of the convenience store. Serah looks at the car with familiarity as a Human woman exits the vehicle and waves at Serah with excitement. The woman's long brown hair shines in the sunlight as it's styled in a ponytail which is added by her bright blue eyes that almost appear like the ocean. Her white sundress fits comfortably on her figure as Serah and Legoshi exit the store.
The woman calls out in a mature and gentle voice "Serah, it's so good to see you again!" She then runs up to hug Serah tightly with deep affection, akin to a mother…bear that is.
Despite the tight squeeze, Serah was able to explain "Legoshi, this is my cousin Maho. Maho, this is my boyfriend Legoshi." Maho lets go of Serah who slides behind Legoshi to take some desperate deep breaths from the tight hug.
Legoshi gets nervous as Maho closely observes him as if he was being scrutinized over every detail, not helping from the fact that her face gets more scrunched up from her increasing concentration. Unsure of what to do, Legoshi contemplates how he should introduce himself to his girlfriend's cousin, deciding his first impression.
Legoshi introduces formally "Hello, my name is Legoshi. It's very nice to meet you." Legoshi ends his introduction with a bow as he hopes this will show his genuine respect to her. Maho looks at him with a neutral expression, her bright eyes showing glimmers of curiosity at the wolf before her. Legoshi feels a tension bubbling inside him, hoping that she doesn't dislike him in some way.
The tension shatters as Maho starts shaking Legoshi's right hand vigorously, almost shaking him, as she replies in an excited tone "It's very nice to meet you Legoshi. When Granny told me that Serah was bringing her boyfriend over for the festival, me and my sisters were really excited."
Despite Legoshi's right hand shaking vigorously, he replies with a slight sweatdrop "Ah, I hope to meet them."
Maho says with realization "Ah, you can meet one right now!" She then heads to the sliding passenger door of the SUV, unbuckles a seat, and lifts to her chest a 3 year old girl. The toddler has neck length brown hair with the tips curling towards her face as her innocent hazel eyes look towards the two. Maho greets "This is my little sister Hana." The little girl's eyes stare at the two with a curious gaze, Serah looking with slight amazement and Legoshi looks with a curious stare himself.
Serah moves closer to the sisters and asks "I've heard that Aunt Hoshi was in labor when I left for school, how is she doing?" Maho doesn't say much but her immediate reaction was still that of a small smile as she looks towards Hana.
Legoshi thought 'I don't think I saw many people try to hide their sadness with a smile, yet her eyes. They seem to have turned darker somehow, like a shadow over a puddle.' Serah notices this, and proceeds to take Hana from her arms and into hers, with a little difficulty from the toddler's moving body.
Serah says with a gentle smile "It's nice to meet you Hana. I'm your cousin Serah."
Hana asks back with an almost quiet and very young voice "Ser-ah?" Serah nods in which Hana says with excitement and a big smile "Cousin Serah!" With little coos, Hana begins bouncing in her arms in excitement which makes it difficult for Serah to hold her. Hana then stops when she notices Legoshi looking at her as he stands next to Serah, her curious gaze looking towards his face and eyes. This makes him nervous as he worries about scaring her, due to how he creeps the other students at school sometimes.
Serah asks "Do you want to hold her, Legoshi?" This sets off many alarms in his head as his mind swirls from the question alone.
Legoshi thinks in a panic as his eyes almost develop swirls 'What?! I'm not sure if it's okay for me to hold her, I'm not even family, what if I scratch her with my claws, I don't want to squeeze her by accident. What if-' His internal rant was interrupted as Serah begins to pass Hana over to Legoshi as she guides his arms on how to hold her.
Serah guides by saying "Just be sure to hold her by her back and bottom, and keep her close to your chest." Legoshi acts almost on instinct as his arms are adjusted as Serah instructs, using most of his mind to control his strength to be gentle with the toddler. Hana clings to Legoshi's white shirt as his nervousness freezes some of his joints, the fear of injuring the child causing his feet to be glued to the floor. He keeps a hand still on her back, ensuring his claws don't even touch her yellow shirt.
Despite the nervousness, Legoshi felt the need to introduce himself "H-hello, I'm Legoshi."
Hana replies in a curious tone "Lego-shi." Legoshi stiffly nods at the pronunciation attempt, waiting for anything to happen next with nervousness and a little hope. Despite the color of his fur, he appears almost pale as a nervous sweat pours down him mixed with the sweat from the heat.
Almost a minute passes before Hana yells out with an overabundance of energy and joy "Fluffy dog!" She then starts rubbing herself towards Legoshi's neck fur as she also tries to climb him a little higher. Legoshi worries even more as Hana starts trying to climb up towards his left shoulder, with Serah and Maho watching as bystanders.
Maho explains with a blank expression "Sorry about Hana, she just loves lots of fluffy things. I always try to keep from hugging some of Grandpa's students."
Serah replies with a similar blank expression "It's fine, I get it, I still sometimes can't help but feel soft fur myself." A small memory plays in the back of her head as she remembers an after-the-fact embarrassing moment.
Flashback*
As a first year student of Cherryton Academy, a part of Serah is still getting used to being in a place filled with nothing but beasts. Despite her even face and almost robotic tone, there are certain ticks that make the other students stare at her with confused and curious stares.
After almost a month of participating in the Gardening Club, one day as she stands next to Haru who is busy watering some flowers. A part of Serah's brain took control of her left arm for a few seconds…and felt the small fluffy tail of a dwarf rabbit. This one action caused Haru to spill some water over the flowers with a small yell of surprise.
Haru asks in shock and fury "What are you doing?!" Confusion then settles on Haru's face as Serah examines her hand with faint glimmers of confusion on her expression.
Serah replies faintly with confusion slipping into her tone "I'm not sure?"
Haru stares at Serah for a few seconds until she starts to laugh in amusement and states "If you wanted to feel my fur, all you had to do was ask. I wouldn't mind letting you feel my hands, maybe even my head if I feel like it. But my tail is off limits!" Haru says the last statement with anger as she points at Serah for emphasis. Serah still looks to her hand, but moves a few steps away from Haru.
Flashback ends*
Serah continues to stare at Legoshi trying to handle Hana as Maho looks at her wristwatch and says in slight alarm "Ah, right, we gotta get you guys to Grandma and Grandpa's while they're still trying to get ready for the festival." Serah has an expression of remembrance as Legoshi looks a little embarrassed as Hana sits on Legoshi's left shoulder. Maho opens the back passenger door that has a car seat on the passenger side, in which Legoshi moves next to her to pass her Hana.
Hana tries to struggle and fuss from being separated from Legoshi's fur in which Serah explains "Legoshi can let you hold his arm next to you Hana, Do you like that?" Hana cheers in excitement as Maho sighs in relief, yet Legoshi couldn't help but be nervous.
Legoshi asks Serah "Are you sure it's okay, I really don't want to hurt her by accident." While Legoshi can be at peace with his own strength when he can protect others with it, he can't stop thinking about the idea of his strength hurting anything small and delicate.
Serah stares at Legoshi for a few seconds with a contemplative expression until she whispers to him "Legoshi, I know you won't hurt Hana, I believe in you." Legoshi's mind pauses as Maho buckles up Hana and Serah guides Legoshi to the driver's side and opens the backseat door. Serah also suggests "Also, if this helps, just imagine Hana as something you can't hurt no matter what."
Legoshi's mind shocks itself back as he nods to Serah as he gets into the middle seat and buckles up. Legoshi lays his arm in front of Hana in which she grabs it and hugs it tightly, while Serah buckles up and holds onto Legoshi's free hand as the group drives off towards their destination.
Legoshi thinks 'When she said that she believes in me, it was like every nervous thought or image in my head just stopped. Just saying that made everything feel like it was going to be okay, I don't know why. Even when she's holding my arm like that, I'm not scared right now, it's okay right now.' The buildings pass by as he looks out at the places and people that pass by whether it's a street vendor or a small office building. A 4 story building comes into view, almost imposing with its walled off area where the inside shows classrooms and a nameplate is shown ahead with the front gate: Fatum Middle School.
Serah states "That was my middle school before I went to Cherryton. It was where I met my first friend." She had a nostalgic look as she gently scratched the back of Legoshi's hand, causing his tail to slightly wag in joy.
Legoshi asks with curiosity "Who was your first friend?"
"She's a Saltwater Crocodile." Serah says plainly. Legoshi's eyes bug out in surprise as he imagines a female crocodile in a middle school uniform standing next to Serah. She explains a little further with a gentle smile "She was the first one to be my friend, despite my problems."
Legoshi nods and faces forward as the car makes a turn to the right and heads towards the eastern part of town. They eventually stop in front of a two story dojo next to a two story house, the wood that makes up the foundation is worn, but taken care of with its dark brown color.
The large building is walled off with concrete walls, yet the aura of the building shows history. Legoshi was a mix of awe and curiosity of the dojo, yet the building's shadow casts over the group, Serah and Maho don't feel a thing. Yet Legoshi can't help but feel small as a fierce and strong aura emanates from the dojo as he looks towards the sign that sits next to the dojo gate: Otowa Family Dojo. Legoshi is visibly confused from the name of the dojo as his left eyebrow raises and he scratches the back of his head.
"Wait, I thought your last name was Seikatsu?" Legoshi asks Serah as Maho takes a tired Hana out of her car seat.
Serah explains "Grandma told me that Dad picked the last name when he married Mom, a way of making their own family while staying connected to Grandma and Grandpa." Legoshi gives her a confused expression which she stares at until she looks away in something akin to embarrassment and states "I don't really get it myself, that's just what she told me."
Maho breaks their confusion by stating "Anyways, we better get inside before they start to get worried." She then opens the sliding gate that leads to the two story house and guesses "I'm sure you're excited to meet the rest of our family, right?"
Legoshi nods and thinks 'I'm a little excited, but I'm also really nervous. These are the people who took care of Serah after 'The Incident', so I imagine them to possibly be very protective of her.' An image of a huge muscular bearded elder and an elderly lady with a scythe pop into his mind as his imagination and his nerves are set to overdrive again.
Legoshi follows them to the front door, a wooden sliding door, which opens to reveal an elderly woman which really stops all the nervous energy that was building up in him. All of her features can only be described as gentle, despite the dark pink kimono with a beautiful white flower pattern. Yet she still holds herself with an air of dignity as her posture is straight and strength is shown in her blue eyes. The first emotion this aged woman shows when she opened the door is surprise that takes over her whole body.
Serah's body becomes almost rigid, nervousness etched to her posture, as she puts her hands together in front of her stomach and says with nervousness "H-hello Grandma…it's good to see you again." Serah doesn't seem to be able to look her grandmother in the eyes.
Grandma then hugs Serah with vigor and says with joy "I knew my ears weren't tricking me." She then tightens her hug with Serah, which starts to get too tight as she continues "My granddaughter is expressing herself more! I'm so happy!" Serah is struggling in her grandmother's grasp despite the overwhelming love and strength the hug holds, including rubbing their cheeks. Legoshi for some reason sees hearts floating in the air around them, unsure how to process it.
Serah says with a blush to her cheeks "I'm glad Grandma, it's good to feel your hugs again. Even when they still hurt." The other girls laugh at the last sentence, including their grandma, as Grandma loosens her grip a little while chuckling.
Legoshi decided to try and introduce himself "H-hi, my name is Legoshi, it's very nice to meet you." Legoshi bows in respect as Serah's grandmother looks at him with an inquisitive stare. That feeling of being striped down and dissected returns with intensity as she looks up and down his figure then stops at his face and eyes. She stares at him for a few seconds, but Legoshi feels as if time crawled slowly and minutes passed.
The tension broke when Serah's grandma takes both of Legoshi's hands into hers and says with joy "So you're the young man my little Serah was talking about. You're very handsome." Legoshi blushes from the compliment, despite his slowly growing courage.
Legoshi replies gratefully "Thank you very much Mrs. Otowa. And thank you for letting me visit your humble home."
Mrs. Otowa waves her hand in a dismissing manner and says with a warm tone "Nonsense, I just had to meet the boy that my granddaughter is so smitten by." Serah's whole face turns bright red as she starts to look nervous, almost embarrassed. Mrs. Otowa finishes by stating "I'm glad Serah chose a gentleman, why, he's husband potential."
This causes both Serah and Legoshi to blush as Serah exclaims "G-grandma! We've only started dating recently!"
Mrs. Otowa then states with a serious tone "Well then it's about time, you better start getting down to business." She pauses, then points to Serah and Legoshi, and finishes "I want some great grandchildren before I die, okay?"
Legoshi starts sharing a similar blush as Serah yells out "Grandma, I'm not ready to marry or have kids! Why are you so embarrassing?!" Maho is chuckling in the background as Mrs. Otowa chuckles with her whole diaphragm from her flustered granddaughter.
Mrs. Otowa then enters the door and says "Why don't we discuss this inside, don't want you all to get sunburned." Despite the embarrassment, the group moves inside of the house, a cozy place with room to breath despite the furniture. A cozy home with bright walls and a feeling of warmth that envelops the occupants like a blanket.
Mrs. Otowa calls out "Fuka, your cousin Serah is here!"
A young female voice replies "Coming!" Footsteps can be heard as a young preteen girl walks down the stairs from the second floor. The girl's long brown hair is styled into a left side ponytail that hangs over her shoulder as her pink dress flutters a little over her blue jeans. She sees Serah and runs to give her a tackle hug and says with excitement "Serah, it's been so long! I've missed you!"
Serah hugs Fuka back and replies with a soft smile "I missed you too."
They separate as Fuka asks "How's high school, is it really as crazy as the movies show?"
Serah chuckles and answers with an amused smile "It's crazy, but never as crazy as the movies." Both girls laugh from the thought of a renowned academy suddenly turning into a bad drama movie with musical numbers. Especially if the large animals are a part of the background dancers, the two would question elephant dancers.
Fuka then asks "So, are you excited to be doing the Dance of Gratitude?"
Serah becomes a bit more reserved in her stance as she replies while looking away nervously "A little, I need to practice it a little more before the festival."
Fuka nods and says with excitement "I'm very excited for the festival, it has been a long time since…!" She covers her mouth in surprise as she notices Serah's saddened expression. Legoshi notices and places his hands on Serah's shoulders, in which she places her right hand on Legoshi's left. Seeing a chance to change the subject and mood, Fuka talks to Legoshi "I'm sorry, I didn't introduce myself. I'm Fuka Setsuko, it's nice to meet you."
Fuka holds her hand out in which Legoshi returns the handshake and greets "I'm Legoshi, it's nice to meet you." He can't help but notice how big his hand is in comparison to the preteen, how it almost envelops her hand.
Maho barely whispers into Fuka's ear with a knowing smirk "He's Serah's boyfriend~." A blush grows on Legoshi's fur as Fuka screams out in a mix of joy and surprise at the news.
Fuka turns to Serah and asks with excitement "Boyfriend?!" Serah nods with a gentle smile as Fuka squeals in a high pitch tone and jumps in excitement as she says "Congratulations, this is really big! Your first boyfriend!"
What interrupts the small positive atmosphere is a loud, deep, and angry voice screaming "What!!!" Heavy footsteps pound above them quickly as the entire group turns to the stairs with blank expressions. They see a large imposing man with a heavily muscular body and short silver white hair running down the stairs in a martial arts gi like a raging bull. The moment the man sees Legoshi with his fiery red eyes, he starts to charge and ready to tackle the wolf who is ready to guard himself.
That is until Serah pulls him away towards herself and Mrs. Otowa opens the front door. By then, it was too late for the muscular elderly man to stop as he had built up too much speed. Everyone else watches with blank expressions as the elderly man runs out the door and hits the concrete wall. It makes an indent of his entire body which everyone sweatdrops to as they slowly close the front door while still holding their blank expressions.
Serah turns to Legoshi and apologizes "I'm sorry about my Grandfather."
Legoshi shakes his head and replies "It's fine, he just cares about you. I can't blame him for that."
Mrs. Otowa chuckles and stares "Well, you don't have to worry much about him. I'll keep him under control."
Serah then states as she stands in front of the door "Actually, there is something I need to ask him." She opens the door and exits with Legoshi following behind her as she faces Mr. Otowa. He got out of the hole he created on the wall and is dusting his gi off. Serah asks "Grandpa." He turns to face his granddaughter as she asks "Could we…go see her…grave?" His stern expression changes to mild surprise as his eyes open wide with Legoshi following with his surprise.
The others inside the house stare with a mix of seriousness and anticipation, as the summer sun rays pour down. This summer day could be the beginning of the season of change.

Beastars
Author notes: I based the three sister off of the Kawamoto sisters from 'March Comes in Like a Lion' (top anime in my opinion).
I'm surprised no one made a Beastars parody of 'Sugar Song to Bitter Step' on YouTube, it frustrates me.
please review and I hope you enjoy my story.
