Mari can't help but feel sad watching the bonfire burn, knowing that everything will end with it, but Kanan's reassuring words and embrace would make her feel a bit better.
Kanan/Mari

Things we lose in the fire

Mari looks through the window of the principal's office with a lethargic smile on her face, watching how the school she loves so much and she fought so hard to keep open, slowly changes to be adorned to its final goodbye.

Stealthily, another girl enters the room and hugs her waist from behind, resting her chin on her shoulder after leaving a fond kiss on the blonde's temple.

- You did everything you could, Mari – Kanan whispers reassuringly in her ear, placing another soft kiss on the space between the blonde's ear and shoulder.

- Did I? – Mari asks insecurely, showing vulnerability instead of her usual bravado.

Kanan just sighs and squeezes Mari tighter in her arms, leaving another soft kiss beneath her ear.

- You know you did it Mari. Now let's go to decorate with the rest.

Mari mirrors Kanan's previous sigh and intertwines their fingers, letting Kanan drag her with the rest of the girls. As soon as they're at the school's ground, she takes a brush to forget about their last day there and paint everything in shiny yellow, including Kanan herself.

Kanan, far from being bothered by it, just laughs and covers her in emerald green, complementing one another perfectly.

And just like that, between laughs and memories, night arrives and all the students gather around the bonfire to burn their notes and say their final goodbyes and also sing their last words.

Once everything ends, Mari can't help but run away and refugee to her office, letting her tears fall freely before she's wrapped in the safety and warmth of Kanan's arms.

- I don't want it to end – she says teary, turning around in Kanan's embrace while the other girl starts to rub her back in circles.

- This is just the beginning Mari – Kanan tells her gently.

- But we won't be together anymore – Mari whispers quietly as more tears keep falling, clutching the fabric of Kanan's uniform as she wets it.

Kanan sighs and takes her face in her hands to cup it, wiping her tears away while caressing her cheeks before she kisses her gently.

- We will never be apart – she tells her calmly, reassuringly, while smiling at her softly and Mari can only nod at her calmer and smile back at her before sealing a promise of a future together with a deep kiss.

Maybe they won't be together physically, but they'll be under the same sky until the day they can finally be together again.
