Chapter 9: Best Day Ever

It was a nice sunny day in Vale as Doc Wiley was hanging up a sign declaring the re-opening of his Dust shop, From Dust Till Dawn.

He was just climbing down the ladder when he missed a step and fell to the ground.

A shadow then passed over Doc and he looked up to see the tanned girl with green hair.

"Excuse me," she said with a smile as she helped Doc to his feet, "I'm not really from around here, could you help me find Tukson's Book Trade?"

"Of course, little missy," Doc replied, "good man, that Tukson. His shop's just up the street, last one on the right."

The girl smiled, "thanks so much, have a good day!"

Doc smiled and waved after her.

The girl walked a few feet before noticing the silver-haired girl leaning against a corner of an alley.

"How much farther, Emerald?" she said in a flat tone.

Emerald held up a wallet and started taking the Lien out of it, "just walk down the street, Valerie."

They started walking as Valerie glared at the buildings.

"I can't stand these Kingdoms," she sneered, "everywhere I look, I just see empty promises and deep pockets."

"I kind of like it," Emerald said, "tall buildings, diverse culture…"

"Naive idiots who are easy to pickpocket," Valerie said in the same tone.

"That's every city," Emerald sighed, "if I gave you this money, would you stop with the 'I-hate-Remnant' rant until we get back?"

"Money means nothing to me," Valerie replied, "just let me be the one to finish the job."

Emerald rolled her blood-red eyes, "don't worry, you'll still have your 'fun.'"

They eventually arrived at the bookshop and walked through the door.

Valerie stopped at the front to look at some books while Emerald went to the front desk and rang the service bell.

"Be right there!" came a man's voice from the back.

Tukson came through a set of double doors with a huge stack of books. He was a bulky caucasian man with short black hair and bushy sideburns wearing a red shirt and dark pants.

"Welcome to Tukson's Book Trade!" he said, putting the books down, "home to every book under the sun!" He turned around, his eyes briefly widening when he saw the two girls, "how may I help you?"

"Just browsing," Valerie said, not bothering to look at him.

Emerald stepped closer to the counter, "actually, I was wondering if you had any copies of The Thief and The Butcher?"

Tukson nodded, "yes, would you like a copy?"

"No, just wondering," Emerald replied, "oh, what about Violet's Garden? In paperback?"

"He has it," Valerie replied, holding it up, "hardback too."

"Ooh, options are nice," Emerald mused.

"Eh, not spicy enough," Valerie muttered before turning to Tukson, "do you have any romances?"

"Near the front," Tukson replied.

Emerald smirked, "what about… Third Crusade?"

Tukson gulped, "I… don't think we have that in stock at the moment."

"But isn't this place 'home to every book under the sun?'" Valerie asked.

"It's just a catchphrase," Tukson said sheepishly.

"It's false advertising!" Valerie snapped.

"You really shouldn't make promises you can't keep, Tukson," Emerald said.

As she spoke, Valerie went over to some switches on the wall and began to darken the windows.

"I hear you're planning on leaving," Emerald went on, "moving all the way to Vacuo. Your brothers in the White Fang won't be happy to hear that… and neither are we."

By the time Emerald was done talking, Valerie had plunged the shop into almost complete darkness.

"You know who we are, don't you?" Emerald said.

"Yes," Tukson replied quietly.

"And you know why we're here?"

"Yes."

"So… are you going to fight back?"

"...YES!"

Claws popped out of Tukson's fingers and he leaped up onto the counter. He lunged at Emerald, but she just dodged out of the way to make way for Valerie as her eyes were starting to glow blue above her bloodthirsty smile.

The last thing Tukson saw was a bright flash of white.

The two then left the shop with Emerald stretching her arms and Valerie reading a book.

"What's with that?" Emerald asked.

"Eh, the title sounds promising," Valerie replied, holding up a copy of Ninjas of Love.

At Beacon Academy, it was lunchtime and students were packed in the cafeteria.

Blake was one such student as she looked over some sketches she was making in a notebook.

One was the White Fang logo along with the picture of a young man in a black coat with short spiky hair as well as an ornate rose.

Her eyes narrowed when a hand came to rest on top of hers.

She flinched and looked up only to see Dante's concerned face which quickly shifted into a reassuring smile.

Blake returned the gesture with a grateful smile before Yang plopped down next to her.

"Whatcha doing?" the blonde asked cheerily.

Blake flinched before calmly closing the notebook, "nothing, just going over some notes over last semester."

A grape then flew out of nowhere which Yang caught in her mouth before saying, "lame."

Dante turned to see Nora throwing another grape with her spoon that Yang once again caught.

Pyrrha was calmly eating her food while Iris was busy cutting hers into bites.

His attention was brought back to Team RWBY as their leader hefted a huge binder onto the table.

The words 'Best Day Ever Activities' were scribbled on the cover.

Ruby cleared her throat, "sisters… friends… Weiss."

"Hey!" the heiress snapped.

"Four score and seven minutes ago," Ruby went on, "I had a dream."

"This ought to be good," Yang muttered, catching another grape.

"A dream that one day, the eight of us will come together,"Ruby went on, "and have the most fun anyone has ever had... ever!"

"Did you steal my binder?!" Weiss realized.

Ruby just made peace signs with her hands and said, "I am not a crook."

"What are you talking about?" Blake asked.

"I'm talking about setting off this semester with a bang!" Ruby declared.

Yang jammed a thumb at herself, "I always start my semesters off with a Yang!"

Other than a few snorts from Dante, no one laughed at the pun.

Nora tried throwing an apple at her, but Dante caught it and started munching on it.

"Look guys, it's been a good two weeks and between more exchange students arriving and the tournament at the end of the year, our second semester is going to be great!" Ruby said, "but classes start back up tomorrow, which is why I've taken the time to schedule a series of wonderful events for us today!"

"I don't know whether to be proud or scared of what you have in store," Weiss said plainly.

"Speak for yourself," Dante said, catching a pudding cup that Yang tried throwing at Nora, "hell yeah, I'm in!"

Nora and Iris both nodded fiercely.

Pyrrha wiped her mouth with a napkin, "it sounds like a lovely time, Ruby."

"I don't know," Blake said nervously, "I think I might sit this one out."

"Sit out or not," Weiss said, "I think that however we spend this last day, we should do it as a Team. I for one think that-"

Whatever she was going to say was muffled by the cream pie that landed on her face.

Everyone's heads slowly turned to Nora, who quickly sat down and pointed a finger at Iris.

Just outside, Kiriko was walking with another girl down the stone path.

She had long brown hair that matched her eyes and wore a dark blue jumpsuit with white gloves, boots, as well as a series of fuchsia straps that matched a pair of headphones she wore as well as some stripes on her cheeks. A small pistol was strapped to her leg.

"Sounds like I missed quite the fight," she said.

"You don't know the half of it, Hana," Kiriko replied, "we all fought side by side and they were so fast and I threw a doughnut box at a guy, which sounds kind of weird but it was awesome!"

Hana smirked, "nice."

"Right?" Kiriko went on, "and the best part is, they're both Faunus."

She then froze before leveling a finger at Hana, "but that's a secret, okay?"

Hana nodded, "got it."

Kiriko leaned in close to her Teammate, "and not a 'I'm gonna go tell Sombra the second Kiriko turns her back' secret, I'm talking secret secret."

"Calm down, Kiriko," Hana replied, "I said I got it."

Kiriko took a deep breath, "you better. I just don't want to screw this up, you know?"

As they kept walking, the two girls were completely oblivious to the food smashing into the windows of the cafeteria. At one point, even Iris flops onto the glass.

"The people here are the coolest," Kiriko went on, "no offense to you guys."

"None taken," Hana said.

"They're just in here," Kiriko pointed at the cafeteria doors, "I'm really excited for you to meet them, so be cool, okay? You can be cool, right?"

Hana raised an eyebrow.

"Right, dumb question," Kiriko rolled her eyes and opened the doors.

They stepped into a warzone.

Most students fled out the doors shouting 'food fight' while only eight remained standing.

Kiriko's face lit up while Hana was horrified.

"Ahahahaha!" Nora cackled, drawing their attention to where the tables had been stacked into a makeshift fortress.

"I'm queen of the castle, I'm queen of the castle!" Nora sang as the rest of Team DVIN stood like sentries around the tables.

Ruby stomped her foot, "justice will be swift! Justice will be painful!"

Crushing a milk carton in her hand, Ruby held up her fist in defiance, "it will be delicious!"

The rest of Team RWBY raised their fists in response before letting out a fierce battle cry.

"Off with their heads!" Nora commanded and the rest of her Team started throwing as many watermelons as they could.

"Yang, chickens!" Ruby said to her big sister.

The blonde did a roll and picked up a pair of rotisserie chickens like they were Ember Celica. Using her tasty weapons, Yang punched all of the incoming watermelons into pulp.

Blake then leaped in front of her partner and grabbed two baguettes before Yang threw her chickens at Pyrrha.

The redhead dodges and grabs a slightly longer baguette as Dante just swats them away with a turkey he'd managed to stuff his arm into.

Pyrrha and Blake then went at it, fighting almost too fast to follow.

Blake tried using her Semblance to disorient Pyrrha, but the warrior prodigy was able to knock her opponent back and throw three more baguettes at Yang with the last one knocking her down.

Ruby surfed on a food tray across the table to Pyrrha and deflected a baguette back to the redhead.

She managed to dodge the shot, but Pyrrha was unable to stop Ruby from knocking her back with the tray.

Dante and Nora charged at their opponents, but Weiss used a ketchup bottle to make Dante slip and crash into some tables.

Nora jumped over the red puddle and grabbed a flagpole that she shoved into a watermelon to make a makeshift hammer. She charged at Weiss, but Ruby got in the way and took the hit for her partner and got knocked down as a result.

Weiss grabbed a swordfish that was there for some reason and jabbed at Nora only for the dynamo to block her attacks and send her sailing into a pillar hard enough to crack the stone.

Ruby rushed to cradle the obviously unconscious Weiss as the pillar collapsed behind them, dramatically shouting, "Weiss, Weiss! Don't leave me! NOOOOOO!"

Yang grabbed two more chickens and rushed to meet Iris, who fought back using a pair of t-bones like tonfas.

The shorter girl quickly got overwhelmed by Yang's ferocity and was quickly sent into the air by a powerful uppercut.

Iris threw her weapons at Yang, but she just dodged them and then jumped high enough to finish the poor girl off by punching her into the floor.

Nora then jumped in and swung her fake hammer so hard that Yang went crashing through the roof and into the sky.

Blake dodged the falling debris and grabbed a link of sausages, whipping Nora into two soda vending machines and causing cans to spill everywhere.

Nora took some of these cans and shook them hard enough that they exploded after she threw them at Blake.

The brunette managed to dodge them all, but Pyrrha used her Semblance to make all the remaining cans rise after Blake which eventually knocked her out.

Now the last of her Team standing, Ruby used her own Semblance to speed through the entire cafeteria, kicking up a cyclone of food that was heading straight for Team DVIN.

Ruby herself spun around so hard that it cracked the wall behind her as her opponents sprawled onto it soon after.

Dante realized what was about to happen and muttered, "oh, son of a Beowolf."

After those words left his mouth, all Dante and his Team could see was purple as the soda bombarded them with all the other food.

When things settled down, the defeated four slid down the wall to the floor like raindrops on a windshield.

Kiriko chuckled, "I love these guys."

Hana didn't reply and just glared her food-covered face at her Teammate.

Before anything else could happen, Glynda stormed into the cafeteria with a snarl.

After using her Semblance to fix everything that was broken in the last five minutes, she glared at the two Teams.

"Children, please," she said in an even tone, "do not play with your food."

Dante was about to reply when Nora let out a huge burp to which her boyfriend gave her a respectful high-five.

"And that's a sign that the tank is full," she said in content.

It was at that moment that Yang fell back through the roof.

There was silence for a moment before Dante started chuckling which slowly turned into a guffaw, the rest of the girls gradually joining in.

"Did you really fly all the way around Remnant?" Dante managed to say through his laughing fit.

"Actually, I'm pretty sure I saw the sun rise and set twice," Yang said in a daze, "so it might have been a few more than that."

As Dante helped Yang up, Ozpin walked up behind Glynda.

"Let it go," he said gently.

Glynda sighed and looked at the Students, "they're supposed to be the defenders of the world."

"And they will be," Ozpin replied, "but right now, they're still just children. So why not let them play the part?"

He started walking away to let his words resonate with Glynda and looked up at the sky, "after all, it isn't a role they'll have forever."

Later that day, Emerald and Valerie made it back to their warehouse hideout to see the White Fang moving a bunch of crates around.

All of a sudden, Torchwick appeared behind them and scooped them both up in a fake hug.

"Oh look, she sent the kids again!" he said with fake joy, "this is turning out just like the divorce!"

Emerald shuddered, "ugh, spare us the thought of you procreating."

Both she and Valerie pulled out of Torchwick's grasp.

"That was a joke," the mastermind said before holding up a slip of paper, "and this just might tell me where you two have been all day."

Emerald's hands shot to her pockets, "what?! Agh!"

"I'm a professional, sweetheart," Torchwick went on, "pay attention, you might actually learn something."

He came closer to them and waved the paper at them, "why do you have this address?"

"Wouldn't you like to know?" Emerald huffed.

"Yeah, I would," Torchwick replied evenly, "now, where have you been all day?"

"Cleaning up your problems," Valerie cut in, "one of them, at least."

"I had that under control," Torchwick said through his teeth.

Valerie just smirked, "two packed bags and a ticket out of Vale said otherwise."

"Listen, you little brat," Torchwick growled, "if it were up to me, I would take you and your little street rat friend here and I'd-"

"Do what, Roman?" purred a familiar voice.

Torchwick nervously turned around while Emerald and Valerie looked up to see Cinder step into view above them before riding a platform lift to their level.

"I'd, uh…" Torchwick scrambled to find the words, "not kill them?"

Emerald smiled at her mentor, "Cinder!"

Cinder on the other hand just glared at Torchwick, "I thought I made it clear that you would eliminate the would-be runaway."

"I was going to…" Torchwick shot back.

"He was going to escape to Vacuo," Emerald cut in, "Valerie and I decided to take it upon ourselves to kill the rat."

"I think he was some sort of cat actually," said Valerie.

"What," Emerald chuckled, "like a puma?"

"Quiet," Cinder said, "did I not specifically instruct you two to keep your hands clean while in Vale?"

"I just thought…" Emerald trailed off as Torchwick chuckled in amusement.

"Don't think," Cinder emphasized, "obey."

Torchwick mimed slitting his throat.

Emerald bowed her head, "yes ma'am, it won't happen again."

"And you," Cinder turned back to Torchwick, "why wasn't this job done sooner?"

Torchwick was baffled before gesturing to all the Dust crates piled to the right.

And the left.

And behind them.

"Sorry if I've been busy stealing every speck of Dust in the Kingdom!" he said somewhat hysterically.

Valerie rolled her eyes, "you're an inspiration to every punk with a gun and a ski mask."

"Look around, kid," Torchwick sneered, "I've got this town running scared! Police are camping out at every corner, Dust prices are through the roof, and we're sitting pretty in an old warehouse with more Dust crystals, vials, and rounds than we know what to do with!"

No one argued with that.

"Speaking of which," he went on, "if you guys wouldn't mind filling me in on your grand master plan, it might actually make my next string of robberies go a little smoother!"

"Oh Roman, have a little faith," Cinder put a hand on his cheek like a mother calming an impatient child, "you'll know what you need when you need to know."

Torchwick seemed to be entranced for a moment, but then just growled and looked away.

"Besides," Cinder continued, "we're done with Dust."

As she began to walk away, Torchwick raised an eyebrow, "o-okay, what now?"

"We're moving," Cinder replied without stopping or turning around, "have the White Fang clear out this building, I'll send you details and coordinates tonight."

"Coordinates?" Torchwick parroted.

Cinder turned back and gave the crime boss a half-smile, "we're proceeding to phase two."

Then she kept walking with Emerald and Valerie following behind her.

Torchwick sighed and tried to light a cigar only to find that his lighter was gone.

Realizing what happened, he glared at Emerald as she smirked back and lit the lighter.

"Lesson learned," she said before closing the lighter.

To be continued…

Author's Note:

That's a wrap!

I have to say, Volume 2 is my favorite of the entire series and the beginning did not disappoint!

We've now been introduced to Mercury's replacement, Valerie. I feel like most people will figure out who she's based on pretty easily, but I'll refrain from saying anything until the time is right.

Not to mention that I've finally gotten to introduce Neptune's replacement who we all know and love: D. Va from Overwatch! As briefly noted in this chapter, Sombra is also on Kiriko's Team, but I'll hold off on revealing the fourth member for now.

As for me, I feel like I've gotten over my writer's block so the next chapter shouldn't take as long to make as this one did, but I'm not guaranteeing anything.

Now for the review I can't PM:

Wolf: Thanks for the kind words! Pharah will definitely be in this, but I'm saving her for later.

Next time, we'll see our heroes taking in their first few days of the new semester and meeting a few new faces, so it's time to get your game on!

Again, feel free to favorite, follow, and/or review. All I ask is that you keep things friendly and professional, both in your praise and your critiques. Suggestions are always welcome, just keep in mind that I might not see or reply to every single review or message.

That all said,

Later Bros!
