The contest hall crackled with energy as Harley and Kenny stepped onto the stage, their eyes locked in fierce competition. With a burst of excitement, Harley sent his Pokémon into action.
"Go, my Darling Cacturne and Ariados!" he shouted, tossing their Pokeballs onto the stage. Ariados emerged with an aggressive hiss, and Cacturne appeared, ready for battle. Kenny was equally enthusiastic, sending out his Pokémon.
"Floatzel! Darmanitan! Let's do it!" he exclaimed, releasing Floatzel and Darmanitan from their Pokeballs. Floatzel gave an excited yip, while Darmanitan's intense determination was palpable. Harley initiated the battle with a series of swift and coordinated commands.
"Spider Web and Bullet Seed!" Ariados responded by spraying sticky webs across the stage, creating a webbed battlefield. At the same time, Cacturne fired a barrage of seeds through the gaps in the web, targeting Kenny's Pokémon.
"Quick, use Stone Edge!" Kenny called out. Darmanitan responded promptly, punching the ground with immense force. As a result, several massive pillars of rock erupted from the ground, forming a defensive barrier that effectively blocked the attacks from Cacturne and Ariados. Kenny seized the opportunity and unleashed a counterattack. "Now it's our turn! Darmanitan, use Earthquake! And Floatzel, use Razor Wind!"
"Darman dar!" Darmanitan yelled as he delivered a powerful punch to the ground with both fists, creating shockwaves that reverberated throughout the stage. The ground trembled, breaking up and shaking up Harley's Pokémon, disrupting their formation.
"Zel!" Floatzel agreed, proceeding to showcase his agility by leaping into the air, avoiding the Earthquake's effects. As he soared, he released Razor Wind from the fins on his arms, which hit the ground with incredible force, breaking up the already unstable battlefield. The sharp gusts of wind pelted the opposing Pokémon with debris, dealing substantial damage. The combination knocked Harley's points down significantly.
"Needle Arm, Cacturne! And Ariados, use Double Edge!" Harley growled. Cacturne charged forward with Needle Arm at the ready, aiming for Kenny's Pokémon. Simultaneously, Ariados fiercely rammed into Floatzel, causing the Water-type Pokémon to yip in discomfort and be forced back.
"Darmanitan, counter Needle Arm with Flare Blitz! Floatzel, give us some cover with Whirlpool!" Kenny decided. In response, Darmanitan cloaked himself in flames and engaged Cacturne's Needle Arm with a powerful Flare Blitz, resulting in an explosive collision. Floatzel, meanwhile, quickly regained his footing and took to the air. He then unleashed Whirlpool, creating a powerful vortex that captured Ariados within it, rendering it unable to assist Cacturne.
"Dear Ariados!" Harley gasped. His attention turned towards Cacturne, who hissed as the fiery impact of Flare Blitz enveloped him and sent him crashing to the ground. All the while Ariados squirmed within the water vortex, producing a series of squeals until he was finally released and landed near Cacturne. Undeterred by the situation, Harley still commanded his Pokémon. "No more playing around! Cotton Spore!"
"Cac…!" Cacturne acknowledged as he got back onto his feet and released a flurry of cotton balls, filling the stage and restricting the movement of all Pokémon caught within the cotton cloud.
"Be cautious, you two!" Kenny warned his Pokemon. Darmanitan backed away from the cotton spores as best he could, while Floatzel mimicked his actions, both attempting to maintain visual contact with Harley's Pokémon.
"Double Poison Sting!" Harley's next order rang out. Ariados fired a barrage of poison darts in unison with Cacturne, targeting Floatzel with the toxic projectiles. The stinging assault landed and was having a notable effect on Kenny's Water-type Pokémon.
"Quick, use Stone Edge!" Kenny called to his Darmanitan. The Fire-type adjusted his position just enough to punch the ground and summon more rock pillars, blocking the remaining Poison Sting projectiles and safeguarding Floatzel.
"Zel…" Floatzel thanked Darmanitan.
"Dar!" Darmanitan nodded.
"We've got to eliminate that Cotton Spore! Floatzel, use Aqua Jet!" Kenny called. Despite the lingering pain from the Poison Sting, Floatzel nodded and coated himself in water, launching himself into the air with his propeller-like tail. As he soared above the battlefield, he scooped up the cotton spores as he glided around the stage, removing the restrictive element. "That's the way!"
"Not so fast! Stop him with Spider Web, Ariados!" Harley countered. Ariados sprayed out more webs to try and restrain Floatzel and impede his movement, but this time Kenny was ready and took action to protect his Pokémon.
"Block that with Flare Blitz, Darmanitan!" Darmanitan jumped in the way while cloaked in flames, instantly burning up the webbing with his fiery attack while Floatzel charged at Ariados with Aqua Jet before Darmanitan lunged at Cacturne to complete the Flare Blitz attack. The attacks hit their targets with full force and both Pokémon scream in pain, falling back. Cacturne in particular fell hard and quickly fainted from too much damage, causing Harley to scream in dismay as the judges' buzzers sounded.
"And Cacturne is unable to battle! Which leaves Ariados in a difficult position against two opponents!" Marian announced. Kenny couldn't contain his joy as he congratulated his faithful companions.
"Way to go, guys! We're almost there!"
"Awesome!" Dawn cheered from the stands. However, Harley's reaction was quite the opposite. Filled with rage and disbelief as he recalled Cacturne to his pokeball, he couldn't help but shout his next commands angrily.
"HOW DARE YOU! Ariados, Scary Face!" Ariados glared menacingly at Kenny's Pokémon, causing Floatzel to flinch slightly, intimidated by the arachnid's sinister appearance. Taking advantage of the moment, Harley issued a final command. "Poison Sting now!"
"Ari!" Ariados responded by launching a barrage of poison stingers, one of which struck Floatzel in the eye. Floatzel screeched in pain, trying to shield himself from the venomous assault.
"Help out and use Stone Edge!" Kenny decided. Darmanitan leaped into action, landing a powerful blow as he punched the ground. A row of rock pillars shot out toward Ariados, inflicting a devastating impact. The Bug-type Pokémon couldn't withstand the force and let out a final scream of pain before fainting. Harley's dismay and shock were palpable as he let out a piercing shriek.
"MY DARLINGS!" Marian stepped in to announce the outcome as the judges' buzzers sounded off once again.
"Ariados is also unable to battle! And that means Kenny has won! He'll be moving on to the quarterfinals!" Kenny was overjoyed and didn't hesitate to run and embrace his victorious Pokémon.
"We did it! You two were amazing! Thank you!"
"Way to go, Kenny!" Dawn exclaimed happily.
As the battle on the stage concluded, the Coordinators watching from the waiting room marveled at the intense showdown.
"Wow, what a battle!" Marina cheered. Drew couldn't help but chuckle at Harley's overconfidence and its consequences. He casually flipped his bangs away from his eye.
"He was right about overconfidence." May joined in on the laughter, just as amused by the spectacle as everyone else.
"Hopefully he can learn from this." Soledad chuckled.
"Maybe." May giggled.
"Both Drew and Kenny are through to the quarter-finals! That means the rest of us have got to make it through too!" Marina reminded the other remaining Coordinators.
"Well, with my match coming up next, I'll get that ball rolling." Solidad took it upon herself to carry the torch.
"Go for it!" May showed her support for her friend. Solidad expressed her gratitude with a smile before heading toward the field.
A fierce and elegant battle on the main stage was finally winding down as it showcased Solidad facing off against a Coordinator named Maury. Maury commanded his powerful Torterra to use Seed Bomb, launching a barrage of seeds toward Solidad's Pidgeot. In response, Solidad remained composed and directed her Pokémon with precision.
"Double Whirlwind, go!" Solidad's Pidgeot and Butterfree unleashed a combination of Whirlwind attacks. The swirling winds intercepted the incoming seeds, pushing them back towards Torterra. The massive Grass-Ground-type Pokémon couldn't withstand the force and was pelted by its own attack, eventually collapsing in defeat. Maury was left gasping in disbelief at the outcome.
"And that's it! Time's up! With that, Solidad moves on to the quarterfinals!" Marian confirmed the result.
"Thank you, Pidgeot, Butterfree." Solidad expressed her gratitude to her trusty companions. Pidgeot and Butterfree responded with cries of affirmation, showing their bond with their Trainer. Meanwhile, May, Marina, Kenny, and Drew watched the battle backstage, all impressed by Solidad's performance. May was next in line for her match, and she couldn't help but feel the pressure mounting, which Drew was the first to notice.
"Keep your cool, and you'll do great." Drew offered some words of encouragement. May nodded, appreciating his support. She then walked over to the stage, mentally preparing herself for the upcoming battle.
"Good luck, May!" Marina called after her with an encouraging smile.
"And for our next match, we have May from Petalburg City taking on Allegra from Hearthome City!" Dawn recognized the name from one of her previous Contests and her curiosity was piqued. Allegra confidently took her place on her side of the field, ready to face May in the upcoming battle. The anticipation in the arena was palpable, and all eyes were on the next battle.
"Altaria! Beautifly! Take the stage!" May called as she tossed her pokeballs. Altaria gracefully took to the sky, enveloped in a shimmering mist from her seal, while Beautifly hovered next to her with ethereal dust particles surrounding her from her own seal.
"Honchkrow! Infernape! It's your turn!" Allegra called as she threw her own pokeballs. The darkly elegant Honchkrow and the fiery Infernape appeared on the stage and were clearly just as ready for a battle. May initiated the action with a series of commands.
"Ice Beam and Silver Wind!" Altaria responded by launching an icy beam from her beak, targeting Honchkrow. Meanwhile, Beautifly flapped her wings vigorously and unleashed a sparkling Silver Wind attack that combined with Altaria's Ice Beam, creating a dazzling and powerful assault.
"Flamethrower now, Infernape! Honchkrow, use Air Cutter!" Allegra retaliated swiftly. Infernape countered the incoming Ice Beam with a searing Flamethrower. Simultaneously, Honchkrow released razor-sharp blades of air, using Air Cutter to cut through the Silver Wind and disperse the combined assault completely. May didn't let the failed combination weigh on her as she pressed forward once more.
"Altaria, use Mist, and Beautifly, Aerial Ace!" she commanded her Pokémon. Altaria ascended to the heavens and released a thick mist that blanketed both of Allegra's Pokémon. In the midst of the mist, Beautifly performed a high-speed Aerial Ace, cutting through the fog and striking Infernape.
"Honchkrow, grab Beautifly!" Allegra reacted quickly. Honchkrow swooped in and snagged Beautifly's wings in his talons.
"Beautifly, use Silver Wind and break free!" May issued a counterattack. Beautifly struggled, but her determination allowed her to fire her Silver Wind attack directly into Honchkrow's chest. The sudden pain made Honchkrow release Beautifly, allowing her to regain her freedom. However, Allegra was not ready to give in.
"Mach Punch, now!" Infernape lunged forward with remarkable speed and precision, landing a Mach Punch directly on Beautifly's chest as she tried to take off once more. May winced at the hit, but still remained focused, using her quick thinking to protect her Pokémon.
"Altaria, cover Beautifly with Dragon Breath!" Altaria intervened, flying between Beautifly and their opponents. She fired a thick, green beam of Dragon energy from her beak, aimed directly at Infernape.
"Dodge it!" Allegra shouted. Infernape leaped into the air, narrowly avoiding Altaria's Dragon Breath as he landed on Honchkrow's back and both took to the sky. However, May noticed the remnants of the Dragon Breath heading out of the field and got an idea.
"Beautifly, guide the Dragon Breath with Silver Wind!" she called. Beautifly heeded her call and pushed her limits to fly ahead of the Dragon Breath. She employed her Silver Wind attack to help redirect the energy, successfully striking both Honchkrow and Infernape with the combined assault.
"Ah! Honchkrow, get out of there!" Allegra attempted to react. Honchkrow, still recovering from the earlier strikes, struggled to evade the redirected Dragon Breath and Silver Wind. The powerful attack left Allegra and her team in a challenging situation even as they finally managed to break free of the assault. This gave May an opportunity to take charge, her voice filled with determination.
"Now wrap this up with Ice Beam!" she commanded. Altaria soared gracefully into position, releasing an icy beam from her beak that raced toward Honchkrow.
"Flamethrower!" Allegra countered. Infernape opened his mouth and unleashed a searing Flamethrower, intending to counter Altaria's Ice Beam. But May's strategic mind expected that same response from before.
"Not this time! Morning Sun, Beautifly!" Beautifly ascended towards Infernape, radiating the brilliance of Morning Sun. The blinding light momentarily affected Infernape, causing his Flamethrower to go off target. May seized the opportunity, directing her Pokémon. "Now's the time! Aerial Ace!"
"On it!" Beautifly acknowledged the command. Moving at an astounding speed, she closed the gap between her and Infernape, delivering a powerful Aerial Ace attack. Infernape cried out in pain and crashed to the stage. At the same time, Honchkrow, left out and vulnerable, squawked in pain as Altaria's Ice Beam finally hit, creating an explosive impact that sent him plummeting to the ground as well.
"Infernape! Honchkrow! You gotta get up!" Allegra called out, trying to motivate her Pokémon. Honchkrow struggled to move at all, while Infernape did manage to regain his footing. "That's the way! Use Flamethrower quickly!"
"Nape!" Infernape agreed as he proceeded to launch a Flamethrower attack once more. Flames surged towards Altaria, who screamed in pain as the fiery assault struck her.
"Beautifly, protect Altaria with Psychic!" May commanded. Beautifly's eyes glowed with Psychic energy as she wrested control of the fire and redirected it away from Altaria. Instead, she aimed it at Honchkrow.
"Defog Honchkrow!" Allegra quickly shouted. Honchkrow managed to finally get up and flapped his wings hard, launching blades of wind into the Flamethrower that dispersed the flames just before they could hit. However, everyone's attention on the Flamethrower had created an opportunity for May and she seized the chance.
"Altaria, Ice Beam! Beautifly, Aerial Ace!" she yelled. Altaria, who had moved to a higher position in the sky, released a powerful Dragon Breath attack from her beak, firing the draconic energy at Honchkrow. Meanwhile, Beautifly charged ahead quickly alongside the energy beam. Altaria hit her mark as Honchkrow gasped in pain, froze in midair, and plummeted to the ground, unable to continue the battle.
"Honchkrow no!" Allegra gasped as the judged buzzers sounded. However, she didn't have a moment to dwell on it as she made one final attempt to regain some control of the battle. "Infernape, find Beautifly and use Flamethrower!"
"Infern! Nape!" Infernape responded as he launched a Flamethrower attack in BEautifly's direction. May, however, was prepared for the final moment.
"Go for it!" she exclaimed. Beautifly soared over Infernape, gracefully dodging the Flamethrower, before circling back around to collide with Infernape in a super effective hit. Infernape cried out in pain and was sent crashing into the back wall, ultimately fainting.
"And that's all she wrote! The Coordinator moving on to the quarter finals is May!" Marian announced the results. May couldn't contain her joy and she yelled triumphantly,
"Yes!"
"Way to go, May!" Dawn cheered from the sidelines. May ran onto the stage, filled with happiness as her Pokémon, shared in her jubilation as they all met for a big celebratory hug.
"And with that, we have our quarter-final match-ups which will take place here tomorrow! The match-ups are…on screen!" Marian announced, directing attention to the overhead monitors which were now displaying the tournament brackets for the audience to see. May looked up as well and her eyes widened as she realized her next opponent would be. The pairings shown on the board included Kenny vs. Drew and herself vs. Solidad. "It's sure to be an action-packed day! So we'll see you all tomorrow!"
"Us against Solidad first thing tomorrow…" May remarked quietly, no stranger to how strategic and skilled Solidad was. Her Pokemon, the only ones close enough to hear her comment, smiled at her confidently.
"We can beat her!" Altaria assured her.
"We already did it once." Beautifly chimed in. May smiled softly at the two of them before she replied.
"Yeah."
Shortly after clearing the stage and rejoining her rivals in the back, Marina ran up to May, eager to express her admiration.
"May, you were incredible!" she exclaimed. Blushing with delight, May hugged her friend.
"Thank you." Solidad also congratulated her with a warm smile before adding her own thoughts.
"I look forward to seeing more from you tomorrow." she said. May took a second to glance over at Drew, who nodded in agreement about the significance of their impending battle.
"Right…" May agreed, even though her apprehension about the upcoming battle was still running strong.
"Our match-up isn't any less important, you know." Kenny chimed in, directing his comment at Drew.
"We won't be outdone, I'm sure." Drew affirmed.
"And I'll do my best in my battle too! Count on it!" Marina promised. May smiled a little at all her rivals still left in the competition. She knew very well that as the field narrowed, the real competition was heating up.
