Chapter 53
During a particularly engaging class, Lana's long-awaited egg began to crack, emitting a soft glow that drew the attention of her classmates. With bated breath, they watched as the shell finally gave way, revealing an Eevee unlike any they had seen before. Much to everyone's surprise, this Eevee sported a magnificent mane of luxuriously long, flowing fur, a sight that left them in awe.
Stunned by the unexpected appearance of her Eevee, Lana was quick to recognize the uniqueness of her newly hatched companion. Entranced by the majestic length of its fur, she decided to christen her new friend with the name "Sandy," a fitting tribute to the stunning sandy-colored coat that adorned the Eevee.
Lillie and I are leaving the class for a week, as our parents have asked us to attend the annual Wind Festival in Fula City. We find ourselves on the tram, gazing out at the spinning windmills that dot the landscape.
"Wow... this is really lively," Lillie exclaims.
"Yeah, Fula City looks amazing," I add, marveling at the vibrant atmosphere surrounding us. The whirling windmills create a mesmerizing display, painting the skyline with their graceful motion. People bustle about, their excitement palpable as they prepare for the festivities ahead.
As we explore the area, we dive headfirst into the whirlwind of activities, indulging in exhilarating experiences like riding roller coasters and venturing aboard Chinchou-shaped submarines. Amidst the thrill, we take a moment to delve into the city's rich history, eager to absorb every detail.
Watching a news segment recounting the city's folklore, I remark, "So Lugia brings the wind to this city and gives it life."
"Yeah," Lillie responds with a smile, "but they don't know that we already have a Lugia in our team."
As we enjoy the festival's lively atmosphere, a commotion catches our attention. A group of individuals seems to be targeting a girl, preparing to throw a lemon at her. Without hesitation, I swiftly intervene, reaching out to grab the lemon mid-air.
"Hey! Who do you think you are?" one of them shouts, clearly displeased by my interference. "Get them, Phanpy! Use Rollout!" In response to their command, Phanpy charges forward, aiming its Rollout attack towards us.
Reacting swiftly, Pikachu leaps agilely onto a nearby building, narrowly evading Phanpy's incoming assault. Unfortunately, the force of Phanpy's built-up momentum causes it to inadvertently collide with the boy who was standing nearby.
Quick to protect us, Pikachu retaliates, countering Phanpy's aggression with a precise Iron Tail attack. With a determined strike, Pikachu manages to overcome Phanpy, defeating it in the heat of the moment.
"So, want to go for another round?" I inquire, trying to diffuse the tension and shift the focus back to the festival's joyous atmosphere. However, the three troublemakers opt for a swift exit, choosing not to engage further with us.
Lillie steps in to assist the girl who was the target of the confrontation, asking with genuine concern, "Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you so much," the girl responds with a relieved smile. She introduces herself as Margo, expressing gratitude for the timely intervention and the kind assistance.
Margo graciously extends an offer to guide us around, eager to share the wonders of Fula City with us. With enthusiasm, she divulges insider information, mentioning the impending arrival of Lugia, the much-anticipated main event of the festival. Intrigued, we eagerly follow her lead.
She leads us through the city, unveiling hidden gems like the captivating Eternal Flame and an abandoned power plant with a compelling history. Margo's narrative about the power plant, its disuse, and the dramatic fire that occurred, where Lugia intervened to quell the flames, captivates us. The tale weaves a sense of mystique around the legendary Pokémon, adding a layer of awe to the upcoming spectacle.
As our tour draws to a close, Margo bids us farewell with a warm smile. "Well, I'm going to be heading this way. Enjoy the festival," she says, leaving us with a sense of gratitude for the enlightening tour and a newfound anticipation for the impending appearance of Lugia.
As we revel in the joyous ambiance by the fountain, Snowy and Absol frolic around us, their playful antics adding to the festive atmosphere. Amidst our laughter and the Pokémon's playful dance, an announcement echoes through the bustling cityscape, inviting all Trainers to participate in the Pokémon Catch Race competition.
Turning to Lillie with a grin, I inquire, "Lillie, do you want to enter?"
"You bet," Lillie replies with an enthusiastic smile, her eyes sparkling with excitement at the prospect of joining the competition.
As we arrive at the waiting area, we're taken aback by the sight of numerous trainers gathered around, eagerly anticipating the commencement of the event. Suddenly, the announcer strides in and starts to detail the rules: all participating trainers will receive a set of distinctive, azure-colored Poké Balls dubbed "Catch Race Poké Balls." These specialized Poké Balls must be used to capture the Pokémon made available for the competition, easily identifiable by a unique sticker.
Points are awarded to trainers based on the strength of the Pokémon they successfully capture. The one accruing the highest number of points by the end of the competition will be declared the victor. It's imperative for the trainers to note that they cannot retain the Pokémon captured during the event; instead, they must return the Poké Balls once the competition concludes.
Then we begin to rush forward, and as Lillie captures an Ekans with Togekiss utilizing Air Slash, I stumble upon a Tyranitar, visibly powerful, and seemingly constrained with ropes, exhibiting signs of distress after I finish capturing a Sentret.
"Lillie, did you notice that?" I inquire urgently.
"Yes, we must lend a hand," Lillie asserts, determination etched on her face, as we jointly opt to pursue the Tyranitar, eager to offer assistance.
"Tyranitar!" We call out, attempting to halt the distressed Pokémon. Lillie quickly suggests, "Wait, Ash, you head that way, and we'll lead the Tyranitar toward you."
"Sure thing. Solid plan," I affirm, veering off in the designated direction. With Lillie's continuous assistance in luring the Tyranitar, the Pokémon begins to show signs of fatigue. As I approach, I leap onto its massive frame, determined to free it from the entangling ropes. "Pikachu! Let's do this! Use Iron Tail!" I command.
Pikachu acknowledges with a nod, executing the attack skillfully, successfully shattering the ropes. "Tyranitar, are you alright?" Lillie inquires with concern.
"Everything's going to be fine," I reassure the Tyranitar, relieved that it's now freed from its constraints.
In the culmination of our efforts, Lillie and I secure the second-place position in the competition. It's revealed that the esteemed first prize is awarded to an individual named Callahan. Though we didn't clinch the top spot, we're content with our performance and the experience gained during the event.
As we unwind in the hotel graciously arranged by our families, I express my curiosity, saying, "I wonder if there might be a rare Pokémon lurking around this area that we've never encountered before."
"Yeah, perhaps we could go searching for it tomorrow," Lillie responds, nodding in agreement at the prospect of exploring to discover this elusive Pokémon.
The next day, as we step out of the elevator, a girl whose hair has transformed into branches and leaves rushes toward us exclaiming, "I've found you!"
"Found us? What do you mean?" Lillie inquires, puzzled by the sudden encounter.
Introducing herself as Risa, she requests our help in locating an Eevee, citing our second-place standing in the recent competition as the reason for seeking our assistance. Agreeing to aid her, we set out and eventually come across a wild Eevee.
"Before capturing it, you'll need to battle it. What Pokémon do you have?" Lillie asks Risa.
"I don't have any," Risa admits. Realizing her predicament, I quickly suggest, "In that case, try using this."
I offer her a Quick Ball, explaining, "This Quick Ball might be of help to you."
Nodding appreciatively, Risa throws the Quick Ball towards the Eevee. As it lands and starts to rock on the ground, Risa takes a moment to catch her breath, her anticipation evident. After a suspenseful pause, the Quick Ball finally stops moving, signifying Risa's successful capture. Overjoyed, she leaps with excitement, celebrating her first-ever Pokémon capture.
As Eevee happily interacts with our group of five Pokémon, Risa confides, "This is the first time I've experienced the joy of catching a Pokémon. This feeling... I haven't felt this passionate in such a long time."
She reveals that she was once a regional track and field champion but had to relinquish her passion due to an injury. "I became suddenly afraid to run again," she admits, wearing a troubled expression.
"Having Eevee by your side might change that," Lillie reassures her.
"How so?" Risa questions, seeking clarity. I chime in, "When something seems daunting alone, having a Pokémon companion can make it achievable."
Nodding contemplatively, Risa asks, "Really?"
Just then, we spot Officer Jenny speeding by on her motorcycle, a sense of urgency in her movements. Intrigued by the unusual activity, we decide to investigate and find out what's happening.
We arrive at the crime scene, and we find the first place winner Callahan. Risa confronts him, but he quickly covers her mouth and mutters something. The Mayor tells everyone to return home while the festival rides are undergoing repair work.
As we arrive at the scene, we spot the first-place winner, Callahan. Risa confronts him, but before she can speak further, he hurriedly covers her mouth and whispers something to her. Meanwhile, the Mayor addresses the crowd, instructing everyone to return home temporarily while repair work is being carried out on the festival rides.
"Look, it's Margo," I announce as we approach her. Margo greets us warmly, "Hey, it's Ash and Lillie!"
"Interesting, you three are already acquainted?" the Mayor inquires.
"We met in town yesterday," Margo explains.
The Mayor then calls upon Callahan to assist, emphasizing that everyone, including him, should contribute to helping out besides our group.
As we lend our support, we notice the trio of boys engaged in conversation about the Zeraora's curse. Risa approaches them and inquires, "Hey, could you tell us more about the Zeraora's curse?"
The boys appear surprised and one of them responds, "You don't know? When Zeraora disappeared in the fire about 50 years ago, the entire mountain became cursed." Another boy chimes in, "It's said that if humans venture into the mountain, it will bring disaster upon them!" The third boy adds, "And that Zeraora itself is cursed!"
"It's a lie!" Margo's voice rings out vehemently. "None of it is true!"
Alarmed by Margo's outburst, Lillie approaches her, inquiring, "Margo, what's troubling you?" Concern etches our faces as we await her response, only to be interrupted by an announcement declaring that the festival area is now deemed safe and reopened to the public once more. The sudden announcement momentarily diverts our attention from Margo's distressing revelation.
As our tasks conclude, we notice Callahan departing, prompting us to pursue him, suspecting his involvement in the recent turmoil. However, during our chase, we stumble upon a professor named Toren conducting a presentation. He appears visibly anxious and starts playing footage that implicates him in aiding Callahan during the Pokémon Catching Race. The realization dawns upon us that we might have lost the race due to their cheating tactics. Moreover, Toren's niece is in tears, evidently distressed by her uncle's deceitful actions.
Later, as we attempt to apprehend the thieves hurling smoke bombs to escape, Lillie and I vigorously pursue them. Unfortunately, our efforts fall short, and the thieves manage to elude us. Hurriedly returning to the Pokémon Center, we encounter Toren, who inquires, "How did it go?"
"Unfortunately, we lost track of them," I admit with a frown.
"Is Eevee alright?" Lillie asks, her concern evident.
"It got caught in the commotion, but Nurse Joy provided treatment. It's recovering well," I assure her.
"Thank goodness. But what exactly did those thieves manage to steal?" Lillie queries, seeking clarification.
"I'm afraid they've stolen the Effect Spore," Toren reveals somberly, mentioning that she's actively conducting an investigation into the matter. Amidst our discussions, an elderly lady named Harriet approaches us, urging everyone to take some much-needed rest.
As dawn breaks, we awaken to a peculiar sight—the windmills of Fula City are motionless, their usual spinning halted. Amidst the murmurs of concerned passersby, we overhear discussions about the cessation of the windmills due to the absence of the Eternal Flame.
"They mentioned the windmill stopped because the Eternal Flame vanished."
"Gone completely? What could have happened?"
Intrigued and sensing a potential connection to the recent events, we decide to investigate the situation surrounding the missing Eternal Flame. Rushing to Fula City's Stadium, where the Eternal Flame resides, we encounter the Mayor and Harriet in discussion.
"Mr. Mayor! We've heard about the Eternal Flame going out," I exclaim upon approaching him. "And that's why the wind..."
"Lugia relies on the Eternal Flame's presence, but now..." The Mayor's expression darkens.
"Does this mean Lugia has lost its guiding point for the wind?" Risa inquires, sensing the gravity of the situation.
"We must ensure the return of the Eternal Flame by night's end," Harriet insists, her voice carrying urgency. "No later than dawn tomorrow."
"Without the wind, the city will run out of power," the mayor expresses with a deep frown, highlighting the dire consequences of the Eternal Flame's absence.
Drawing closer to the situation at hand, we notice Risa displaying signs of acrophobia—fear of heights. However, our attention shifts as Absol, with its keen senses, detects something amiss. Sensing Absol's indication, we follow its trail, which leads us to Smeargle and Toren.
Toren swiftly discerns that the spilled Smeargle ink was no accidental mishap. With a sense of urgency, we head back to the location of the Eternal Flame. Toren explains that Smeargle's essence, when distilled, becomes invisible to the naked eye. Using a UV torch, Toren unveils a trail of otherwise invisible footprints, crucial for tracing the culprits responsible for the disturbance of the Eternal Flame.
As we trace the footsteps, we come across Margo, who appears surrounded by a group of poachers. Concerned, I quickly ask, "Margo, are you alright?"
"Ash? Lillie? You're here?" Margo responds, visibly surprised. She notices her father and others arriving at the scene.
"I am the mayor of Fula City. Consider your next actions carefully, or legal action will be taken," the mayor asserts firmly, his authoritative tone causing the poachers to falter and eventually retreat in fear of repercussions. Meanwhile, Harriet steps in, using her cane to prevent Risa from intervening, possibly to maintain caution and order in the situation.
As Toren directs his UV torch towards Margo's foot, she exclaims, "Father! It's not Zeraora's fault! I'm the one responsible!"
At that moment, our attention is drawn to a fatigued Pokémon lying on the ground—Zeraora, the enigmatic Pokémon. Furthermore, Toren discovers the Eternal Flame positioned beside Zeraora, revealing that Margo was the one who stole it, implicating her in the unsettling series of events.
As the mayor confronts Margo about the consequences of her actions, she chooses to disclose the circumstances that led to her involvement with Zeraora. She recounts a moment when she was playing with Teddiursa and Ditto, and a rock slipped from the nearby mountain. When Margo reopened her eyes, she realized that Zeraora had intervened, preventing her from being crushed. However, in the process, Zeraora sustained injuries, compelling Margo to feel responsible and thus, she decided to aid in its recovery.
Through tears, Margo confesses, "I knew everyone would try to capture Zeraora. That's why I thought if I caused the Wind Festival to be called off, he would be safe. I understood that taking the Eternal Flame would land me in trouble, but I intended to return it once the festival was canceled." Her voice trembles with remorse as she tearfully apologizes, "I'm sorry... I'm truly, deeply sorry..."
The mayor, in a heartfelt moment, addresses Margo with gratitude, acknowledging her efforts to protect Zeraora. Then, he begins to share a crucial revelation about the truth surrounding Zeraora.
He explains that Zeraora was once revered as the "master of the land" and lived harmoniously among the wilderness. However, it was humans who ignited the fire fifty years ago, causing devastation in the area. In a heroic act, Zeraora saved numerous wild Pokémon from the flames. Regrettably, due to humanity's greed and disregard for nature, Zeraora grew resentful and became intensely hostile towards humans.
The previous Mayor of Fula City made a deliberate decision to conceal the truth from the public. Instead, they claimed that Zeraora had vanished and declared the mountain a restricted zone, aiming to safeguard both the people and Zeraora from potential conflict. This decision was made to prevent further discord and protect Zeraora from humans, who, due to their past actions, had instigated its animosity.
Lillie wears a troubled expression, expressing, "That explains a lot..."
Harriet adds, "Only a handful of individuals are aware of this truth. Very few, and that includes the younger generation."
The mayor, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, concludes, "And that's the reality concerning Zeraora."
As a massive explosion disrupts the tranquility, a colossal purple plume of smoke billows upward, reaching high into the sky. Toren's horrified gasp signals his recognition of the situation. "No... it can't be!" he exclaims.
Concerned, I inquire, "Do you have any information about this?"
Toren quickly notices wild Pidgeys, once soaring through the sky, now plummeting to the ground. Hastening to examine them, he confirms grimly, "The symptoms... it must be the Effect Spore..."
Realization strikes, prompting me to ask, "The Effect Spore—those thieves stole them, didn't they?"
As Toren instructs his Chansey to administer Aromatherapy to aid the distressed trio of Pidgey, the Mayor seeks more information about the Effect Spore, inquiring, "Please explain this Effect Spore. What exactly is it?"
"I developed a chemical that replicates the Effect Spore's abilities and stored it in a capsule. Inhaling the chemical would induce poisoning and numbness in the body," Toren explains.
Perplexed by this revelation, Risa questions, "But why would you create something like that?"
"In the course of my research, I discovered a potential solution that could address certain human ailments," Toren responds, shedding light on his motivations behind developing the substance.
As the Mayor receives an urgent phone call, alerting him to the spreading Effect Spore essence throughout Fula City, Lillie takes charge, declaring, "Let's not just stand by and watch. We have to act. We're going to save Fula City."
"Easier said than done, but how do we even begin?" Risa questions, voicing her concerns.
"We each have our Pokémon partners right beside us. Their abilities can assist us in untangling this chaos," I suggest optimistically.
The Mayor acknowledges this plan, nodding in agreement. "Indeed. Let's get to it," he asserts.
"Absolutely," Lillie affirms, encouraging everyone with her determination.
"Professor Toren, is there any method to disperse the smoke?" the mayor inquires urgently.
Toren responds, "I can return to the lab and retrieve a quantity of the essence of Natural Cure, but unfortunately, there's no viable way to distribute it effectively throughout the city."
Harriet interjects with a suggestion, "What if we utilize the wind? There's an old power generating system."
"But I thought that system was inoperable," Margo interjects, puzzled.
"If anyone can fix it, it's Harriet," the mayor declares confidently.
Harriet steps forward and reveals, "You see, I'm the one who constructed that power plant. I designed the propeller to function in reverse as well. By running it in reverse, we can create wind, but the question is, can it still function? I'd say it's a 50-50 chance."
As the plan unfolds, it's decided that Risa, Margo, and the two of us will remain on-site to tend to Zeraora and any other injured Pokémon. Toren hands us a bottle of Super Potion to assist in our task, ensuring we have a means to aid the affected Pokémon. Mayor Oliver wishes everyone the best of luck before departing to aid in implementing Harriet's plan to activate the wind power plant.
As we continue to heal, we find that Zeraora is waking up, but it swiftly goes behind us and I yell, "Zeraora, it's okay! We don't want to hurt you."
Amidst the chaos, sudden explosions rock the forests surrounding Fula City. Zeraora, propelled by a sudden surge of determination, bolts towards the source of the flames, prompting Margo to shout, "It's going to rescue the Pokémon there!"
Reacting swiftly, Margo attempts to flee the scene, but I interject, "Lillie and I will pursue Margo. Risa, it's up to you to take the Eternal Flame to the stadium and summon Lugia."
Risa hesitates, expressing concern, "But wait, I..."
"Nobody can reach there as swiftly as you can," Lillie reassures Risa. "It's a task only you can accomplish. You're capable of this, I believe in you."
With a sense of urgency and determination, we entrust the crucial task to Risa as Lillie and I take off in pursuit of Margo, hoping to prevent further chaos and aid in resolving the escalating crisis.
As we arrive at Zeraora's location, it launches a fierce attack using Discharge. However, I manage to protect myself using the Earth Plate, rendering the attack ineffective. Speaking calmly, I address Zeraora, "Zeraora, please calm down. Your attacks won't affect me. I only wish to be your friend."
In response to Zeraora's attempt at a Plasma Fists attack, Pikachu swiftly counters with Thunderbolt, diffusing the offensive move, followed by an Iron Tail. Anticipating further confrontation, Zeraora employs Close Combat to shield itself from our advances.
Subsequently, Pikachu retaliates with a Quick Attack, which collides forcefully with Zeraora's Thunder Punch, the clash signaling the intensity of the confrontation between us and the powerful Pokémon.
"Zeraora, I understand your struggle. Trust doesn't come easy," I empathize with the powerful Pokémon. "But not everyone is unworthy of trust."
As Zeraora launches another attack, this time aimed towards the rescued Pokémon, it gasps in shock as the impending danger becomes evident. Reacting swiftly, I intervene, using the move Protect to shield everyone from the incoming attack.
"Ash!" Lillie and Margo cry out in horror at the risky move.
With a chuckle, I reassure them, "I'm okay. I'm just glad everyone's safe."
"You really scared us, Ash," Margo murmurs, expressing her concern. Zeraora then decides to help me up, and I say, "Now we're friends, right?"
"Sorry for everything." Zeraora mutters. As we observe, the Natural Cure's essence begins to take effect, causing the smoke to disperse, relieving the immediate danger.
Despite Zeraora's valiant efforts, the raging fire near the stadium proves to be an overwhelming challenge. However, a surprising turn occurs as Mayor Oliver and the residents of Fula City arrive on the scene, determined to offer their assistance.
Zeraora, wary of their presence, growls in response, but Margo intervenes, reassuring, "Zeraora, it's alright. This time, everyone's here to protect the forest. You don't need to worry."
In a heartening turn of events, Harriet, Toren, and Callahan join the group, prompting Lillie's relieved exclamation, "You're all safe!"
Harriet quickly addresses the dire situation, explaining, "The situation's critical. If the sprinkler system isn't broken, we can still get it to work. We need assistance from Electric Type Pokémon."
Determined to aid in the crisis, we utilize our Electric Type Pokémon to assist in activating the sprinkler system, a crucial step in preventing further damage to the stadium from the encroaching fire. Working together, our collective efforts aim to quell the flames and safeguard the area from additional destruction.
As Margo rushes towards us, a looming piece of debris threatens to fall. Despite our attempts to reach her in time, Zeraora appears, swooping in just in the nick of time to shield Margo from harm's way. However, the weight and strain of the falling debris take a toll on Zeraora.
With everyone's encouragement and Margo's words of wisdom, Zeraora, struggling against the immense pressure, summons its resolve. With an incredible effort of willpower, it manages to stabilize the falling debris, fighting against the weight and preventing further danger to Margo and the others.
We notice a beam of light in the distance, and we realize that Risa has put the Eternal Flame back, but Zeraora falls from a significant height from exhaustion.
As Margo pleads for Zeraora to awaken, hope arrives in the form of Lugia soaring above us. Mayor Oliver, acknowledging the heroic efforts, attributes the city's salvation to Lugia and Zeraora. However, Harriet interjects, emphasizing that it was truly the collective efforts of everyone present that saved Fula City.
With Lugia's majestic flight, a symbolic gesture of hope and renewal, it commands the winds. As a result, the turbines of Fula City are reignited, their blades turning once more.
As Zeraora gradually awakens, relief and joy spread through the group, celebrating the Pokémon's recovery.
On the conclusive night of the festival, Mayor Oliver stands before the crowd, echoing our profound words, "If one can't do something alone, one can with a Pokémon." With resolve and sincerity, he officially renounces the fabricated tale of Zeraora's disappearance, proclaiming Fula City's commitment to coexist in harmony with Zeraora. The announcement resonates deeply, drawing thunderous cheers from the assembled crowd.
To commemorate the culmination of the Wind Festival and the collective efforts that saved Fula City, the community releases vibrant orange lanterns into the sky. The illuminated spectacle symbolizes unity, hope, and a new beginning, honoring both the festivities and the remarkable events that unfolded during this time of trial and triumph.
As our time in Fula City draws to a close and we prepare to depart for Alola, Zeraora approaches us, expressing a desire to join our journey. With a gesture of goodwill, Zeraora presents a customized Pokéball, symbolizing its wish to become a part of our team. Overwhelmed by this unexpected and heartfelt offer, we graciously accept Zeraora as our new companion.
Amidst bidding farewell to everyone in Fula City, we express our gratitude for their hospitality and support. With heartfelt farewells exchanged, we embark on our new adventure, now accompanied by the formidable and loyal Zeraora, ready to face whatever lies ahead in our travels together.
Zeraora: The Thunderclap Pokemon: Electric Type. It electrifies its claws and tears its opponents apart with them. Even if they dodge its attack, they'll be electrocuted by the flying sparks.
Here is a new chapter, and this chapter marks the movie of Zeraora and I hope you like it. The next chapter will begin the Poni Island part 2.
