Nanami's Lucky Coin
Risa's House
An autumn afternoon. The exams period is coming soon at Saint Michael's Girls Academy and in order to get a better study, Azumi Risa has invited her friends, Kitajima Sara and Oda Nanami to study together at her house.
She didn't want to say it, but it was clear that both Nanami and Sara, have been having troubles studying on their own, so she wanted to assist them by helping them study. But.
– I'm so exhausted! – exclaims Sara – I don't wanna study anymore.
– Come on, Sara. We've barely study anything so far. You need to take this more serious if you wanna have an approval score next week at the exams.
– But there are just so many subjects! How am I supposed to learn all this in just a couple days?
– Well, to be fair, you have missed so many classes so far because of your work as a model, that it's actually a miracle you haven't been suspended for the rest of the year yet.
– Eh?! Can they really do that?
– Not if you pass your exams, so you better stop complaining and start studying harder.
– Muoh, Risa! You're so meanie! – cute pout – Anyway, shouldn't Miya also been studying with us too? You know, since she is also a first grader?
– She really should, but you already know her, she wouldn't study a thing unless my life depended on it (not hers, since I think she'd rather die than studying for a high school exam). Besides, it doesn't matter if she studies or not, since she will still get the top score even without studying (as much as that pisses me off).
– Wow. Miya-san sounds like someone incredible.
– She is indeed. So, unless you can also score an A++ on your own, you better stop complaining and start studying more serious. Take Nanami-san for example. She hasn't stop studying for a minute since we got here. I'm sure she is already an expert and is ready for tomorrow's test. Right, Nanami? Nanami?
But when they both look at her, they see her completely lost and worried while looking at her notebook.
– I… I don't understand this.
– Nanami-san?
– I don't understand this! Why do they need to mix letters and numbers at a math problem? How am I suppose to solve it? This is terrible, if Onee-sama finds out that I failed at tomorrow tests, she is gonna be so disappointed at me that she might say "I can't be with a girl as stupid as you, we're done". What Am I Gonna Do?!
– Calm down, Nanami! Geez.
Both Risa and Sara calm down her red pigtail friend and sit her down.
– Look, you're not gonna fail, we just need to focus on your studies.
– Yes, besides there's no way Yuuna-sama would break up with you for something like that. Worst case, she would offer herself to help you study and her body as a reward for studying everyday.
– The point is – continues Risa – that everything is gonna be fine, since we are not gonna leave today until you have understood how to solve the problems, right Sara?
– Eh?! Well… – looking at her friends – Alright, I get it. I'm just gonna call Kaede-chan to tell her I'm not gonna be home soon, so she can have the bath to herself . Muoh, I really wanted to bath with her today.
Sara leaves the room for a moment to call her cousin while Risa tells her.
– Don't worry Nanami, everything is going to be okay. You'll see.
– Risa-chan.
With that, the trio of friends continues studying, helping each other all the way through midnight.
Nanami really hopes Risa is right about going to be all right.
Nanami's House – Next Morning
Next morning, Nanami wakes up and prepares for school. After having breakfast and dress on her uniform, she leaves her house and starts walking her way to school.
While she walks, she can't help but to feel worried about today's exams. Although she studied really hard last night with her friends and had managed to understand much more than she did yesterday, she's still very worried about not being able to pass.
– What am I gonna do if I fail? Will I really be worthy of an incredible girlfriend like Onee-sama if I can't even pass my first grade exams?
Nanami keeps thinking about it having these negative thoughts (which make her even worrier) until she finds a little coin standing on the sidewalk.
– What is this?
She bends to see it better and confirms it's a pretty coin.
– Somebody must have dropped it on its way.
Nanami thinks it's a shame to leave such a pretty coin left on the sidewalk and then remembers what Sara told her last week about something that she read on one of those girly magazines that she likes to read.
"They say that if you find a coin that it's heads up on your way, it's a sign of good luck!"
And sure enough, this coin was heads up.
– Can this be a sign of good luck?
Nanami looks around to make sure no one is looking at her and picks up the coin keeping it at her bag.
– I wonder if this is really gonna bring me luck.
Saint Michael's – Next Day
The next day after exams are over, Nanami is feeling really nervous about how she did. She thinks she totally failed because of the difficulty of the exam and she is not the only one, since her classmates, Aoi, Misaki and Rin, are also really worried about their results.
– Muoh, yesterday's exams were so difficult! – Aoi whines.
– I know. We are Japanese after all. Why do we need to learn English? – Misaki complains.
– Perhaps to understand what we are saying on this fanfic – says Rin.
– Don't pretend to be breaking the fourth wall, Rin! I'm not in the mood –Misaki complains, still worried about her results.
Nanami prefers not to speak, since she doesn't want to test her luck today. Not since she thinks she totally failed.
But when the teacher gives them back the result of their exams, Nanami sees that…
– I… I passed? I passed!
And not only that, she was among the top scores in each one of the subjects. After double confirming these were indeed her exams, she jumps from her seat filled with joy.
– OMG! Nanami-chan? – Misaki surprised.
– Congratulations, Nanami! – Aoi happy for her.
– We're so happy. How did you do it? – Rin curious about it.
– Yeah, tell us, how did you do it? – Asks Misaki.
– Well… uh…
It's not surprise that her friends are both happy and surprised about her, since she is not usually among the top students, so is normal they feel curious about it.
But Nanami, not wanting her friends to know her secret, tells them.
– I… just went to Risa's and asked her to help me study. That's all.
– Really? Well, is true that Risa-san is very good at studying, but still that doesn't explain…
But before they can dig in, the school bell rings announcing the beginning of recess, so Nanami leaves the classroom.
– Well, I'm gonna go and have lunch with Onee-sa... I mean… see you later, girls!
Nanami leaves before they can ask her anymore questions, but since Yuuna has work to do today with her classmates during recess, she goes to Risa's classroom to tell her the good news.
Once she gets there, she sees Sara is also with her, sharing her tests results with her. Miya isn't there since she skipped class to hang out at the atelier as usual.
– Look, Risa-chan! I passed! With a C- but still good enough so I won't be suspended and still be able to continue my work as a model!
– That's great news to hear. Congratulations, Sara.
– Thanks! Still can't believe you managed to score an A on all the subjects, though.
– It's just the result of hard working and studying. Still Miya got an A+ on everything, but that's okay, I'm happy for her. One day I'm gonna surpass her.
– I'm sure you will. Look! There's Nanami-chan.
– Good morning, Nanami-chan. Did you get already your results from the exams?
– I sure did. I got an A on everything!
– Really?! OMG, that's Awesome! Just like Risa!
– Congratulation, Nanami. I'm so happy for you.
– Tell us, how did you do it? – asks Sara.
– That's obviously the result of what happens when you keep studying and practicing for an exam, Sara – says Risa – Because when you put all of your effort on something, you'll see that…
– I found a lucky penny on the street and it helped me to do well on the exams!
– What? – asks Risa shocked.
– WOW! Really! Can I see it?
Nanami takes out the coin and shows it to Sara.
– That's so cool! I wish I had found a lucky coin on the street like you.
– Yeah, although at first I didn't believe the coin would bring me any luck, now I think this coin has super lucky powers for making me pass.
– WOW! That's incredible!
– There's no way that's true – says Risa.
– Eh?!
– There's no way a coin made you pass your exams, Nanami. If you passed was because of all the hard work you put into studying.
– I though the same thing, but when I was doing my exam, there were a lot of questions I didn't know the answer to. There were even some question that I answered at random and they were all right.
– Well then… I guess you are just a good guesser. Because of how much you studied the night before.
– It wasn't that. I'm telling you, this coin has good luck super powers.
Seeing that Nanami and Risa won't come to an agreement, Sara proposes.
– Hey, I know! How about if we all go to out favorite sandwich place after school to celebrate that we all pass our exams?
– Sounds like a wonderful idea, Sara-chan!
– I agree – says Risa with a smile.
– All right! It's a date then.
Later that Day – Sandwich's Place
So after classes are over, the girls leave together to go to their favorite place where they each order a different sandwich.
Sara is first, ordering an all veggie sandwich and a bottle of water in order to maintain her model figure. Then goes Risa ordering a classic BLT and a soda.
And when it comes Nanami's turn to orders hers (a salami and double chesse sandwich with a strawberry soda).
– Congratulations! You are our 10,000th customer of the year and so, you've won a free sandwich meal everyday for a month!
– Really?! OMG! I can't believe it!
– It must be the lucky coin, Nanami-chan! – says Sara excited for her friend. But Risa.
– Oh, come on! I though we'd agreed that coin had nothing to do with it. That prize could have gone literally to anyone in line.
– Hehehe, are you jelly? – asks Sara.
– No, I'm not. See, if Miya or me were to go here and Miya had gotten selected…
– Would she have had the lucky coin? – asks Nanami.
– No, idiot! She wouldn't have and still would've won the prize!
– I think you are still jelly – says Sara with a smile.
– I'm not! Argh! Whatever, let's just go take a sit and have our meal.
– Okay!
Later that Day
After having had their lunch together, the trio of friends prepares to go back to their places while Nanami is still happy daydreaming about her lucky coin.
– So cool, so cool, this lucky penny is so awesome!
– I'm telling you, those were just coincidences.
– How would you know? – asks Sara.
– Let's see…
Risa thinks of way to prove her point.
– Alright, there's a contest this week at the school's store where they are actually offering some free tickets to the amusement park.
– OMG! The amusement park? I'd love to go there on my next date with Onee-sa... I mean, Yuuna-sama.
– All you have to do is buy anything you want at the school store and then, write on a piece of paper the exact number of jelly beans you think there are at the jar next to the cashier. The one who gets the closest to the exact number of jelly beans by the end of the week, will be the winner.
Risa takes some money from her purse and hands it to Nanami.
– Here, tomorrow buy anything you want from the school store. If you manage to win the prize, maybe I'll believe you.
– All I have to do is guess the exact number of jelly beans, right?
– That's right, but if you don't, then you'll have to accept that there's not such thing as luck.
– Mmhhh… All right, I'll take that bet.
Saint Michael's – Next Week
And so next week, after the school's store contest is over.
– I did it! I won the free tickets to the amusement park!
– No way! – Risa can't believe it.
– Really? – asks Sara excited.
– Yes! And not only that, I also guessed the exact number of jelly beans on the jar.
– That's so awesome! I always believed in you and your lucky coin, Nanami-chan!
Sara and Nanami jump while holding hands in excitement, while Risa looks like she is just about to explode a vein on her forehead.
Sara sees this and goes tease her even more.
– Admit it, Risa-chan. You can't deny now that the coin has lucky powers.
– There's not such thing as luck. And I'll prove it to you girls.
Risa takes the coin from Nanami's and locks it on her schoolbag.
– All I have to do is take this coin away and prove to you girls that this coin had nothing to do with it.
– Awww, come on! Give me back my coin! I need it!
Nanami tries to take it back from Risa but is useless, she just doesn't have the strength to do it.
Fortunately for her, Risa tells her.
– Listen to me, do this one more thing for me and then I promise I'll believe you, alright?
– Muoh, Fine. What do I have to do?
Risa takes out a deck of cards from her bag and shuffles them good before putting them all face down at her desk at random.
– Now, flip any card you want. And if you manage to flip the queen of hearts without the coin, then I'll prove there's not such thing as a lucky coin.
– You can do it, Nanami!
– A-Alright.
With a sweat on her forehead, Nanami tries to guess which card has the queen of hearts.
She picks one, but when she flips it, it turns to be the Joker.
Nanami and Sara look at it unsurprised and say.
– See? It's the coin.
– It's definitely the coin.
– Well… I guess nobody could have guessed it at first try. Here, try again with another card and I guarantee is gonna be the queen of hearts. No lucky coin needed.
– Mmmhhh…
Once again, Nanami tries her best. Flips a card by random and… it's another joker.
– Oh, come on! Two jokers in a row? That can't be a coincidence – says Sara.
– It's definitely the coin – says Nanami.
– It's not! Here, flip another card – it's not – Another! – it's not again – Another! Another! Another!
– Kyaaaaa!
Nanami keeps flipping cards at random, trying to find the queen of hearts among them. But as the cards start to finish.
"OMG! I can't believe! How much bad luck can this girl have without the coin?" thinks Risa to herself "Perhaps there is no queen of hearts in this deck? After all, there's no way that the last card she flips actually is…"
And when Nanami flips the last card, it turns to be the queen of hearts.
The trio of friends look at the result astonished and after a few seconds with none of them saying a word, they finally say.
– Hmmm… yeah, Risa-chan. It's the coin.
– Definitely the coin.
With no more words left to say, Risa finally says.
– Well… maybe I would wanna believe you guys…
Risa takes Nanami's coin from her schoolbag and hands it to her by saying.
– Don't ever let go of this coin, for your own good.
– Agree.
