Chapter 1: Introduction
"No way."
"Please, listen to me..."
"I said no. No matter what you say, father... I will not become a chunin. It's enough for me to be a Genin and do my D-Rank missions alone. I didn't want to be a shinobi from the start, and you know it."
"Naruto… you are now 16 years old, and you are now a strong shinobi." said the father.
Naruto Uzumaki, the son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki was annoyed. His purple eyes showed it as usual. He had not inherited the personality of either Minato or Kushina. He was calm, showed little emotion and always saw everything logically. He was just like his grandfather. He had spiky red hair proving his affiliation with the Uzumaki clan and purple eyes. Like his father, he wore a dark blue top with two bands on both of his sleeves, a red spiral on the back and dark blue pants. He also wore sandals of the same color and a blue headband tied around his forehead. He also wore a shuriken pouch on his leg and a pouch across his waist for other items like scrolls or the like.
Minato Namikaze sighed and closed his two blue eyes. Ever since Naruto was young, the two often had arguments because Naruto often had different opinions than Minato. Naruto didn't even want to go to the ninja academy at first because he didn't really want to be a shinobi. Only when his little sister asked him did he agree and attended the Ninja Academy.
In addition to his two blue eyes, Minato also had long spiky blonde hair with 2 long strands framing his face. He wore the normal outfit of a Konoha Shinobi, only he wore a Jonin vest over the dark blue clothes and a short-sleeved long white haori over his normal attire, closed in the front by a thin , orange rope. The haori was decorated by red flame-like motifs on the edges.
Both were currently in the Hokage's office. Minato Namikaze was known and feared as the Yellow Flash. He was the fourth Hokage and just like his 3 predecessors, his face was carved into the rock behind Konoha. He was the fastest shinobi of all time.
"Listen father, I want to go home. Was anything else? I've already completed my missions for today." Naruto said. He just wanted to go home and do some more training. He never wanted to be a shinobi, but in order to protect his little sister he entered the Ninja Academy and became a Genin. He trained every day to be strong enough. Should his little sister ever be in danger, he would be able to save her. That was the only reason he was still a genin and was training every day. If his little sister wouldn't also been a genin since that year and if she wouldn't be also exposed to dangers, he wouldn't be a shinobi anymore.
Minato nodded but said "I hope you'll change your mind. After all, you train hard every day, and it would be a shame if you didn't use your strength." Minato said. "I love you son."
Naruto looked at his father and sighed. "I love you too, father. I'll go now." Naruto said. He opened the door and walked out the door. He closed the door behind him and walked down the long hall towards the exit.
Minato sighed once and looked at a photo that was on his desk. It was a picture from Naruto's first day at the academy. Even then he looked fairly neutral and didn't smile. He only ever smiled when his little sister was near him. He could never refuse his little sister a wish. She admired her big brother then, but now she didn't admire him anymore. She had always thought that he would become a strong shinobi just like her father. But Naruto remained a genin and made no move to become a chunin. He trained every day, but for his little sister, Naruto became someone she didn't like anymore.
Her big brother was useless in her eyes. Every day he only did D-rank missions and practiced the basics. He didn't do anything else. He didn't even meet friends or know any high-ranking jutsus. He only knew jutsus of rank D or lower.
After all, she herself could already do the Rasengan (Spiral Sphere), which she knew from her father. But Naruto made no effort to learn better techniques or jutsus. He just trained the basics every day and was happy with it.
She wasn't even looking at him anymore. She wanted nothing more to do with her big brother. She even wanted Naruto to move out of the house. But that wasn't going to happen anytime soon.
He tried to talk to his little sister every now and then, but she just gave him the cold shoulder and just said "Useless" to him and then walked away. Naruto always just smiled at the remark and acted like that didn't happen.
Naruto was on his way to his parents' house, but he stopped. He looked sideways and could see an old team member. She had been on a team with him back then. Naruto was once praised as a genius because he had already graduated from the academy after 2 years.
"Izumi." Naruto said. She was standing there in the shade of the tree with her arms crossed under her breasts. Just like Naruto himself, Izumi was rather stoic. She had been his first real friend and to this day she was one of the few friends Naruto had.
"Naruto." Izumi Uchiha said. She was the daughter of Fugaku Uchiha and one year older than Naruto. She had black eyes, under which were long, pronounced tear-troughs. She had jet-black hair that was pulled back in a low ponytail and her face was framed with center -parted bangs that extended to her chin; the ponytail and bangs grew longer over the years. She was known as the hope of the Uchiha clan. Only Shisui Uchiha was more famous than Izumi and that was only because he was 3 years older. In terms of sheer talent, Izumi ranked even higher than Shisui. She wore the normal clothes from the Uchiha. A dark colored top with a high collar and the Uchiha logo on the back. She also wore white shorts and black sandals.
"How was your mission?" Naruto asked. She had been with the Anbu since she was 12 years old and was now a Captain, leading her own unit. She was known for her strength in all 5 great nations. She was one of the strongest kunoichi of her time.
She pushed off the tree and went to Naruto. A meter in front of him she stopped and said, "Successful as always." Izumi said stoically. Only Naruto saw the emotion in her eyes and as usual he couldn't help but show emotion as well. The two had already passed some dangerous missions together. She was his best friend, if you could put it that way.
"I see you turned down your father's offer again." Izumi said. Naruto just nodded and looked up at the sky. "It's enough for me to be a genin. I don't have to be a Chunin to train and save my sister if necessary." Naruto said.
Izumi remained silent and said nothing. She knew Naruto better than anyone. "Fancy a little fight?" Izumi asked. It had been a while since she had fought Naruto. She barely had time to meet Naruto since she became an Anbu. That she happened to meet him today was a happy coincidence and nothing more. Normally she wanted to go back and report to her father. But when she saw Naruto, she decided to talk to her old friend again.
Naruto looked at Izumi and raised an eyebrow. "Why do you want to fight? You should rather use the time to help your little sister." Naruto said. Izumi also had a little sister and she still admired her. Of course, her biggest goal was to surpass Izumi one day, but she still spoke to Izumi. Naruto's little sister didn't even look at him anymore.
"She's currently on a C-rank mission with her team," Izumi said.
"Right, her team left on a C-rank mission today." Naruto said. His little sister was on the same team as Izumi's little sister. He didn't even have that in mind.
"We can fight again if you want." Naruto said.
"I'll quickly get my equipment and then I'll come to our usual meeting place." Izumi said. Naruto nodded and watched her disappear into a whirl of leaves. Naruto disappeared in a puff of smoke and made his way to the meeting point.
Naruto just woke up and yawned once. He looked at the clock and at the same time heard his mother calling his name. "NARUTO! COME DOWN, FOOD IS READY!" shouted Kushina Uzumaki from the kitchen.
He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and stood up. He got dressed and took a look in the mirror. The fight between him and Izumi was interrupted because an Anbu came and notified her to come to the Hokage. He said goodbye to Izumi and afterwards he went home and did some more training before going to sleep in the evening.
In his room was a single bed, a closet, a desk with several books and scrolls on it, and a mirror. When he was satisfied, he left his room and walked down the hall to the stairs. He could already smell the food his mother had prepared.
"Good morning, Naruto." Kushina Namikaze said with a smile. Many wondered why Naruto chose to be called Uzumaki and not Namikaze like the rest of his family. He did it for the simple reason that he felt more like an Uzumaki than a Namikaze. Both of his parents had no problem with it and accepted his decision.
Kushina was well-known for her beauty. She was a fair-skinned and slender woman of feminine build with violet eyes, and the common Uzumaki red hair. Her hair was straight and reached her thigs with shoulder-length strands that framed both sides of her face and a black clip that parted her hair to the left. Generally, she wore a high-collared, sleeveless blouse under a long, loose-fitting dress with a wristband on her left wrist and standard shinobi sandals.
"Good morning, mother." Naruto said and sat down at the table. As usual, his mother smiled and radiated warmth. Naruto was lucky to be born into this family. Even if he didn't always agree with his father and his little sister hated him now. He still loved his family and wouldn't wish for any other.
He knew that his current situation was entirely his own fault, and he was content with things as they were. His mother always showed understanding for his decisions and no matter what he did, she supported him.
"What are you up to today?" Kushina asked while placing a plate of food in front of Naruto. Naruto had to think for a moment if he had anything special planned for today. Since Izumi was bound to be sent on another mission, meeting her wasn't planned. Of course, she could still be in the village, but that would only become clear today.
"Actually, the same as usual. I'll get 2 D-rank missions and when I finish them, I'll come back and train in the backyard." Naruto said as he started to eat. Kushina smiled and grabbed some food for herself before sitting down at the table as well. She knew very well that her son was training hard so that he could take care of his little sister and the village. She didn't even mind that he only did D-rank missions. After all, she was a mother and always worried about her children. Knowing that Naruto always did harmless missions and then trained to become stronger calmed her down a bit. Of course, she would also support him if he ever decided to go on a more dangerous mission. She knew that he was now strong enough to survive missions outside of the village unscathed. When he was younger and on some C-rank missions with his Genin team, he had already fought many strong shinobi.
"I heard that Izumi-chan is back in the village. Did you meet her by accident?" asked Kushina.
"Yes. I met her yesterday on my way home from the Hokage building. We actually wanted to fight each other, but dad wanted something from her, and I haven't seen her since." Naruto said.
"I understand. Minato must have his reasons." Kushina said thoughtfully. She hoped it wasn't wild. She was already worried enough about her daughter, who was currently out of town with her team on a C-rank mission. After all, her daughter had the other half of the kyūbi (Nine-Tailes) in herself. Just like Kushina herself, her daughter was the jinchūriki (Power of Human Sacrifice) from the Kyūbi. Back then, the kyūbi was almost stolen at birth by her daughter. Luckily, Minato was able to split the kyūbi. One half he had sealed back in his wife and the other half he sealed in his newly born daughter.
"I know. I just hope he doesn't send Izumi on another mission that lasts for weeks. Izumi hardly has time for her little sister." Naruto said while he ate. Kushina smiled upon hearing Naruto's words. He didn't show it on the outside, but he always worried about the people around him. He could fool many, but Kushina could always see everything directly. She knew everything about her son, after all she was his mother. It was her job to know her son better than anyone else.
"How about training your sister when she gets back?" Kushina asked with a smile.
Naruto looked at his mother. "You know Kasumi doesn't even look at me anymore. I'd like to spend time with her, but she would need to talk to me first." Naruto said.
"Why don't you show her what you've got? She just has the wrong image of you, Naruto. I know she would talk to you again if you didn't hide your strength from her." Kushina said.
She knew Naruto was training the basics like a maniac and had been for a long time. Longer than anyone. But he did so for good reason. You can never practice anything enough, even the basics. Speed, strength, taijutsu, ninjutsu, kenjutsu, genjutsu… whatever the field, the basics weren't basics for nothing. Naruto trained very hard to perfectly master the basics in each area. Although he was more specialized in taijutsu, kenjutsu and fūinjutsu. He had trained particularly hard in these areas. Of course, his chakra control was also almost perfect. Chakra control was one of the most important foundations of a shinobi. Using chakra in every way was one of the most important things in a fight. More potency in one hit, short speed bursts, and more stuff was possible with raw chakra control.
"I'm just following one basic rule of a shinobi." Naruto said.
Kushina smiled "It is fine, when your enemies underestimate you, but you don't have to hide anything from your family, Naruto." Kushina said. Her son really was like her father. Her father was never good at showing his emotions either. She knew Naruto was acting this way because of his personality. He didn't want to show off. He didn't want his little sister to be jealous of his strength. He just wanted her to be happy and safe. That's all her son wanted.
Naruto looked at his mother and remained silent. His purple eyes showed his conflicted emotions. Kushina put a hand on his shoulder, and you could immediately see his body relaxing. "I would be happy if you would make up with your sister again."
Naruto looked into his mother's purple eyes, which radiated nothing but understanding and warmth. He nodded and said, "I'll try."
A few minutes later, Naruto tied his blue headband around his forehead and put on his blue sandals. He looked to the side and saw his katana, which he got from his mother. The Uzumaki clan was famous for many things, but few knew about their great talent in kenjutsu. Naruto was very talented with the sword and trained a lot with the sword. He had also learned some things from his mother, who was a master of kenjutsu. When she was still an active shinobi, she was a feared kenjutsu master.
He walked out of his room, adjusting his bag across his waist and his shuriken pouch on his leg. His katana was stowed in a seal that he wore on his skin. He went to the kitchen and said, "I'll be gone, mother."
Kushina smiled and walked over to Naruto. She hugged Naruto and Naruto hugged back directly. As always, it was a nice feeling to be hugged by his mother. After a few seconds, Kushina broke the hug and said, "Be careful."
"Of course." Naruto said. He walked out of the house and then disappeared in a puff of smoke, signaling the use of the Shunshin no Jutsu (Body Flicker Technique). Kushina got ready to pay a visit to her husband. She appeared fairly normal, with a vein showing above her right eye. She still had something to discuss with Minato, which was why he sent her daughter on such a dangerous mission. A scary red aura had even appeared around her as she raised her fist, already contemplating what she was going to do with Minato.
Naruto was jumping over the rooftops when someone said his name. "Yo, Naruto!" said a male voice. Naruto landed in a crouch and stood up before he turned around. He saw Izumi in her full Anbu-Gear and beside her stood another Anbu in full gear who was part of her team. Those two Shinobi were 2 of the best and deadliest Anbu in the entire village. Naruto would even go as far as to say that those two were the strongest Anbu in the village.
"Hi Shisui, Izumi," said Naruto with a nod.
"How is it going, buddy?" asked Shisui with a cheeky grin while he walked over to Naruto and laid his arm over his shoulder. He was 4 years older than Naruto but still he was one of the people who knew Naruto better than anyone. He met him when Shisui was 12 years old.
"As always," said Naruto.
"You really need to smile more. It's really weird when I am the only one who smiled the entire time and you both never show emotions," said Shisui a bit dramatically.
Naruto and Izumi simply looked at Shisui with a neutral look and didn't react to this comment.
Shisui sighed and took his arm from Naruto. He took 3 steps back and got serious. Naruto took notice of the sudden change in his character and because of that he narrowed his eyes. Shisui never became so dead serious from one moment to another when it's nothing urgent and really serious.
"Naruto Uzumaki, Genin of Konohagakure," said Izumi. Shisui and Izumi placed their masks in front of their faces again and were now completely different than before. When both met Naruto, they were good friends but now both were Anbu. The silent force of the leaf that didn't got recognition from others for their accomplishments.
"We are here to accompany you to the Hokage. He has an urgent matter to discuss with you," said Izumi.
Naruto simply nodded, having understood the situation directly. All three made their way to the Hokage building where his father would speak to him about something urgent.
