A/N: I was listening to the Anne Murray album Let's Keep It That Way, and there was this one song on there that reminded me so much of Shadamy, so I wrote this fic. Enjoy!
It was a cold late fall day, and Shadow the Hedgehog was spending it at Rouge the Bat's mansion, surfing the Internet. In spite of all the hullabaloo over social media and misinformation, he valued it as a tool to better improve himself, whether learning new self-help techniques or just learning interesting facts and trivia. Then, he heard the intercom in his room buzz, so he pressed the button.
"Yes?"
"Shaddy, you have a visitor!"
"Who is it?"
"She said she wanted to surprise you!"
Shadow grumbled. "Fine, let her up."
Shadow's Hedgehog Sense tingled. While he didn't appreciate Rouge being so opaque with him, he could sense that whoever had come to visit him meant no harm and that it was somebody he cared about. In short order, he heard knocking on his door.
"Come in."
The door opened, and in stepped Amy Rose.
"Hey Shadow!"
Amy ran up to Shadow and gave him a big hug, which he gladly returned. Ever since the time she accidentally glomped him thinking that he was Sonic, he'd always wanted to wrap his arms around her, and he'd gotten quite a few opportunities since then, each time being just as comforting and satisfying as the rest. Soon enough, Amy let go.
"I was hoping to see you, Amy."
Amy blinked. "Oh? Why for?"
"I was thinking about you…about us…and I was listening to one of my favorite Anne Murray albums, and there was one song on it that – more than any other – reminded me of how we met and why I love you so much."
Amy smiled. "Awww, how nice! May I listen to it?"
"OK."
Shadow turned on his Crosley CR704 record player combo and connected his phone to it via the Bluetooth function. Then, he put on the song "Just to Feel This Love From You". Hearing the soft country instrumentation with orchestration got Amy's attention in itself, but as the lyrics sank in, she gasped, and she began crying, much to his shock. In fact, the shock was so great that Shadow paused the song:
"Amy, don't cry! I…I'm sorry!"
"Shadow, I'm not crying because I'm upset! I…this is the most beautiful, heartfelt thing you've ever said to me!"
"Oh Amy…"
Shadow gave Amy a big hug, which she gladly returned. It was never easy for Shadow to hear his friends cry, mainly because it not only reminded him of his own sadness, but because seeing them like this hurt him. On the other hand, as difficult as it was for him to understand why people did this, it made him feel happy that she was happy because of him, and it meant so much to him that she could share in the joy that she and this song brought him. Furthermore, having somebody whom he could open up to and show his sensitive side made him forget all about the things that were troubling him. Holding her soft, cuddly body in his arms also relaxed him greatly, not to mention it made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Truly, this was heaven.
Amy felt as though she was in heaven as well. Granted, crying was never easy for her, but sometimes, she enjoyed a good round of letting the tears out. Considering Shadow had expressed his love for her in his own special way, she was perfectly comfortable expressing her emotions like this. Then again, she'd always been perfectly comfortable around him, which was why even though she initially felt embarrassment after accidentally glomping him, she didn't look back on it with sorrow or remorse. Considering everything that came about in the succeeding days, this current moment meant a lot to her. For anyone to open their heart to her like this gave her a great deal of satisfaction, especially considering it was someone with whom she was compatible. Eventually, Amy stopped crying, but she kept hugging Shadow for a while before letting go, smiling.
"Shadow, may I…may I have this dance?"
Shadow rubbed the back of his head. "I don't know; I'm not very good…"
"It doesn't matter! I just feel happy whenever you're around!"
Shadow shrugged and smiled. "All right. First…"
Shadow handed Amy a tissue, which she blew her nose with.
"Ready?" Shadow embraced Amy.
"Ready whenever you are."
Shadow resumed the song, and him and Amy broke out into a slow dance. For somebody who claimed not to be very good, he seemed to be able to follow the rhythm and steps along quite well. Even if this wasn't his thing, he was greatly enjoying doing this with her. She enjoyed it as well. For a long time, she'd fantasized about dancing slowly with somebody that she had a crush on, and now that fantasy was becoming reality, she was in heaven. Even if the rest of the song was barely a couple of minutes later, for those two, this moment would last a lifetime.
"Shadow, thanks for dancing with me. You were actually very good at it. Did you practice?"
Shadow smiled. "Well…Rouge tried to teach me one time. Guess I needed the right girl to truly master it."
Amy smiled. "And did you find the right girl?"
"I'm looking at her."
Amy giggled and ruffled the quills on top of Shadow's head. "Oh, you're such a silly boy!"
"How ironic considering how silly and girly you are."
Amy laughed. "Oh, Shadow, you're too much!"
"Anyways, enough joking. May we snuggle?"
"Of course!"
Amy and Shadow headed to the former's bed, where he snuggled with her.
"Amy, I could never imagine spending my life with another girl. You are my one and only Rose."
"Awww, you're so sweet!"
Shadow and Amy continued to snuggle for a while. For him, it was a moment of well-deserved yet elusive happiness, and for her, it was a chance to be with the right person after spending so much time chasing the wrong one.
Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
