Chapter 1: Quip
How long had it been? How long had they been putting off getting together? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? They both knew that they liked each other. They both knew that they were attracted to each other, but they were always concerned to start this new chapter for fear of finding out how it ended. Would it end on a high note? Or would it end on a sour one? Would there be trouble along the way? Or would it be smooth sailing? Fidelity or infidelity? Honesty or secrecy? Love or hate? Affection or abuse? Kindness or volatility? Tranquility or uproar?
They'd taken the leap. They'd decided to give it a shot. It started with a date. A simple, one-on-one date. They'd gone to dinner, everything was respectful. Everything went well. No bumps. No bruises. Nothing. But when their friends found out? Rapid-fire questions. Pressures all around. Teasing. Swooning. Invasion of privacy. Have you done this yet? Have you done that yet? When did you plan on doing that? Why didn't you do this? Is there something wrong with them? What's your problem?
This was supposed to be easy. This was supposed to be fun. This was supposed to be them. But as Rey and Ben sat with their friends, the questions never-ending, pointed, suggestive... Rey found herself getting even more irritated. Her arms were crossed over her chest as she listened to Poe (especially Poe) and Rose go on and on about how cute their babies would look, and how loud the wedding bells were, and how cute it was that Brooding Ben got himself a ray of sunshine. That was the final straw. Rey sat up in her chair, gaining everyone's attention. She was the embodiment of serenity, even though her mind was racing with harsh cutting words she hadn't used yet. She turned sweetly to Ben with a smile on her face, earning a concerned look. "Ben, did you know that light travels faster than sound?" He quirked a brow at her, as if that were a dumb question. "This is why some people appear bright until they speak," she said with a wide smile.
He felt his lips curl up into a devious grin, a slight chuckle forcing its way out of his lips. The rest of their friends fell silent. Rey risked a glance over at them and gave them a small smirk. "It seems you understood the assignment. Now, how about we talk about something else?"
Ben kept his eyes glued to the woman beside him. That was probably one of the best, most witty comments he'd heard from her since meeting her. And he had to say that he thoroughly enjoyed it. He didn't know if this was a trait of hers, but he definitely didn't mind the distraction. He barely heard their friends changing the subject. All he could stay focused on was her, sitting back in her chair comfortably, satisfied with herself that she'd made her point. Her eyes shot over to him out of the corner of her eye and she only smiled and reached for his hand. He took it with a smirk, bringing her knuckles to his lips and placing a delicate kiss there. He could tell already that this woman was definitely a force to be reckoned with. Any woman to shut Poe and Rose up was definitely a keeper. Or at the very least, an interesting prospect.
He couldn't help but see Finn staring at her, too, though. And he looked a little irritated, offended, more like. She didn't fail to notice this either. She turned her sight to him and gave him a nod. He scoffed and crossed his arms over his chest. "Why are you so irritable, Finn?" Rose asked, finally noticing the change in his demeanor.
He rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Why can't you take a joke, Rey?" he asked, a little hurt and indignation slipping through in his voice.
Rey's brows tugged down as she looked at him. "You guys were poking fun at us. Do I not have a right to tell you that's enough?"
"But you didn't ask us to stop. Instead, you slung insults," Finn countered.
Rey's brows shot up this time and she sighed softly. "I see... I offended you. I apologize..."
"Thank you, I-"
"Finn, I'm so sorry to have offended you. But if you do find me offensive, maybe you should stop finding me," she shot back, her eyes narrowed at him in a silent challenge. The man shut up then, earning a laugh from Poe and Rose in response. "We're friends, aren't we? It seems you need to learn to take a joke, too."
Finn chewed on the inside of his cheek before sighing and nodding in defeat. "You're right. Sorry, Rey. Ben."
Ben didn't have to say a word. He only nodded at Finn and grinned at Rey. This woman definitely was interesting to say the least. And these little quips she was whipping out of nowhere... He could tell there would never be a dull moment around her. He definitely saw something he liked. And he liked it a lot.
