After Kai tumbled through the mirror portal, he realized he was in a foreign universe. One that could only be located within the mirror itself! There were billions of mirrors from all across the multiverse.
Several harbored mortal souls trapped in them due to staring at them too long. Others seemed like fairy tale mirrors where someone was snared as punishment. He also could sense a diabolical presence that governed this reflective universe.
The dark presence patiently waited for him to let his guard down. Kai could only describe it as an individual with an insatiable appetite yearning for him to be fat with fear so it could devour his feast of worries.
Kai, therefore, attempted to remain calm as he tried to figure a way out of the world he'd become entangled in. He felt a strong tug directing him to another mirror. The mirror was a lovely pink heart-shaped vanity mirror that glittered dazzlingly.
He felt a warm female presence beckoning him to this mirror. He quickly fled there but stopped short when a deep voice boomed. The voice sounded like it was everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
"Leaving so soon? Tut, tut, that's not good manners for a guest in someone's home. You should at least show some manners and greet your host."
Kai, desperate to keep his growing hysteria under control, closed his eyes before speaking loudly. "Who are you? What is this place? Are you the one that forced me into this world of reflections?"
"Every mirror carries some form of enchantment," the male voice stated dismissively. "Some are just more substantial then others. The Hall of Mirrors has existed since the beginning of time. Anyone can come and go here. However, multiple individuals have become ensnared within their reflections due to their outlandish vanity.
Others, again, are just incarcerated here for petty revenge. I know your next question. Some have figured out how to escape their confinement within these looking glasses. But I shan't tell you how.
Besides, it's been ages since I enjoyed having a specter in my world. I find your type of fear to be a rare delicacy," said the disembodied voice.
"I'm not afraid!" Kai bluffed, but the voice only bellowed with laughter before speaking again.
"Don't even try to lie, little ghost. I can already taste your fears! Your anguish, heartache, and all those delectable emotions building up inside you! It's so nice when fresh meat is before you!"
The voice now sounded right behind him. Everything screamed in Kai not to turn around, but he couldn't help it. He spun around and saw the most hideous man he'd ever witnessed. He was obese and had gluttonous eyes, and drool was coming out of his mouth.
Kai's first instinct was to try and get to the mirror that seemed to be calling to him. But the repulsive male was getting closer, and Kai could feel something slimy squirming inside him.
Before he knew what happened, the grotesque man's fat fingers snatched whatever had been wiggling and slurped it down. He then grinned evilly before speaking, "Ah, ghostly fear! It's been over a millennium since I tasted such pleasureful fear."
Kai tried to back away. "Who are you? What are you?" he demanded.
"I don't give my real name away, ghost. But you may call me the Mirror Lord. Now hold still as I've not had a proper meal in ages!" as he tried to get closer to Kai.
Unexpectedly, a silvery beam of moonlight blinded the Mirror Lord, giving Kai enough time to flee through the mirror that had been calling him.
He remained ignorant that another influential entity had sensed a disturbance within the life force of the multiverse. One that was simultaneously familiar and unknown.
Fifty miles outside of Madison, Wisconsin, sat a humongous castle-like mansion. It was like something out of a fairy tale! The backyard had an enormous terrace, a swimming pool, and various sports fields! There was also a greenhouse, butterfly garden, and a large horse stable!
This was the home of Vlad Masters and his family. His wife Magdalene, who liked to be called Mag, and their three children. Jazz, Danny, and Danielle. However, despite being some of the wealthiest individuals on Earth and the Ghost Zone, they're quite kindhearted, compassionate, and not at all elitists.
The family also had a secret. They're all human/ghost hybrids. This was a direct result of a mishap that Vlad experienced in university.
His ex-best friend/roommate, Jack Fenton, and his former crush, Maddie Wells, had constructed a portal device. They're obsessed with ghosts. However, it was in a more Ghostbusters way than how genuine paranormal investigators operated.
Either way, they assembled this absurd contraption and expected it to unlock a gateway to the world of the dead. Instead, Vlad was blasted by a lot of green energy and got supernatural acne. He was sent to the nearest hospital to recover, yet the physicians didn't know how to treat the condition.
At the same time, Mag had just graduated from university in South Dakota but only had enough money to buy a bus ticket. A scandal at her university resulted in educators and their students losing most of their money.
Mag had used the last of her funds to take a bus to crash with her best friend, Leta Morgenstern, in Wisconsin. Mag herself was severely anemic and had an already weakened immune system.
She also ended up in the hospital next to Vlad. They gradually fell in love and, with the help of Mag's friend Leta, cured Vlad of his supernatural acne. Then Vlad returned the favor by donating his bone marrow to save Mag's life.
The couple discovered later they'd become half-ghosts and were introduced to an unknown universe. After that, they started their business and family and had been doing more than well.
The clock struck midnight as Danny Masters attempted to sneak into the kitchen to steal some chocolate cake. Even with ghost powers, this was challenging. His mother, Mag, wouldn't be pleased if she found out what he was doing.
Danny wasn't supposed to have dessert for two weeks due to a misadventure he had when out on his weekly date night. Danny felt this was unfair. It wasn't like he or his ghost girlfriend Prima expected to get caught up in a brawl with renegade ghosts that their parents had to rescue them from.
Regardless, Mag pointed out that if they hadn't tried to sneak into a Ghost Zone nightclub while underage, this wouldn't be happening. She said he should be grateful it was only two weeks without dessert and not her using the grounding belt on him.
Whenever the children were grounded, their parents forced them to wear specialized belts that would render them incapable of accessing their ghost's capabilities until their grounding was over. Hence, Danny should appreciate his mother's leniency with him this time.
Nevertheless, he was intensely craving some chocolate cake. He was almost in the kitchen when he heard someone splashing in the pool in the backyard. The fourteen-year-old impulsively transformed into his ghost form.
Most individuals thought Danny's ghost form made him look like an anime character, with his shoulder-length snow-white hair and bright glowing green eyes. His black cape, white belt buckle collar with the skintight sleeveless black shirt, and black pants with white pinstripes were highly reminiscent of the title characters of Yu-gi-oh!
Though they never wore knee-high black and white boots or elbow-length white gloves, unmistakable belts around his biceps and thighs made him look like Kaiba.
He zoomed outside and looked down at the enormous pool where the full moon shone brightly on one particular spot. He was surprised when someone burst upward and out of the pool. Whoever it was, they were coughing up water and looked exceptionally unwell.
Since ghosts have much better vision than normal humans, Danny could see in the dark better. He hovered a little closer, and his eyebrows knitted in confusion. "Kai? Is that you?" he questioned the jackal-looking apparition.
Kai whirled around to see an unfamiliar ghost boy looking at him. He was exceedingly attractive but was glancing at him strangely. The unidentified boy repeated, "Kai? What are you doing at my house at midnight?
And why do you look so different? It looks like you got caught on the wrong end of one of Clockwork's time spells! Is everything okay? Did your parents have an argument or something?"
To Danny's shock, who he thought was his classmate, bolted away fearfully. He tried to give chase only to hear his mother calling him, wanting to know why he was out of bed at this time of night!
"Oh crap!" whispered Danny, only for his mother to call out.
"I heard that, Danny! You know I don't permit vulgar language in this house. Not get back here this instant and tell me what's going on!" Mag ordered her only son.
Danny rocketed back to the terrace where his mother stood waiting for him. She was wearing her plum bathrobe. His mother was incredibly gorgeous. Mag Masters had waist-length curly auburn hair, which was half-dyed plum. She also had naturally tan skin and startling blue-violet eyes.
Countless women would be jealous of her figure with her tiny waist, voluptuous hips, and small feet. Or she seemed to be able to look fabulous no matter what style or color her clothing was.
"Hi, Mom," Danny chuckled nervously.
"Daniel Vlad Masters, I'm only going to ask once. What are you doing out of bed and in your ghost form at half past midnight? Don't you dare try to lie to me either! Your father and I taught you better then that."
"Okay! I was attempting to sneak a slice of cake, but I heard someone splashing in the pool. So I went to investigate it. Someone who looked remarkably like my schoolmate Kai Graves was getting out.
I thought it was Kai anyway. However, he looked slightly different and didn't seem to recognize me. He quickly fled into the night when I tried to help him."
Mag studied her son before replying. "I'll forgive you for the cake thing. However, we must find out if this was Kai. I'm confident his parents would like to know if he's in trouble. They've already been through so much with him."
"I still can't believe his mother, Dreama, told you why she was concerned when her son was dreaming. I still feel guilty for costing him most of his hearing," Danny said.
"Danny, please stop feeling guilty about that. No one blames you since it was an accident, and thanks to your father's invention, Kai regained his hearing. So it's alright.
I'll speak to his mother tomorrow when she visits for our weekly mom's coffee date. I'll get her opinion on what is going on. In the meantime, back to bed, young man!
And do not try to steal dessert again! I told you that you're forbidden from having dessert for two weeks, and I meant it. So consider yourself fortunate I've not added time."
"Yes, Mom."
The following morning, all the ghostly mothers and her best friend Leta had gathered for their weekly moms' coffee date. Mag got straight to the point regarding last night's circumstances.
Dreama's brilliant blue eyes had a bewildered look. "Kai was home all last night. I've been checking on him more lately because he's having nightmares again. My twin brother and I are incredibly concerned."
"So there's no way he could've been in our backyard last night?" Mag pressed as she replenished Dreama's coffee.
The beautiful woman's lengthy chartreuse hair glowed brightly before answering, "I don't think so. Though I will admit, I felt something peculiar around that time. Like someone was calling for help. I went to my private dream mirror and sensed someone calling to me.
So, I utilized my abilities to protect them. Yet instead of coming out of the mirror, I could sense they accidentally got redirected somewhere else."
"Hmm, my husband Clockwork also felt something was off last night," confessed Lilith as she sipped her coffee slowly
"He did?" Mag looked surprised.
"Yes, Mag. I've created a potent sleeping draft to get my husband to sleep. We all know how challenging it is to get my husband to sleep.
However, that's beside the point. However, whatever the disturbance was, it surpassed the sleeping potion. However, he wouldn't inform me what was amiss.
The most I got out of him was that someone who shouldn't be here had come. But he wouldn't say anymore then that," the stunning Keeper of Souls replied sadly.
"Well, we must find out who splashed in the pool last night! They're likely petrified and confused," Mag conceded.
"Well, as I'm the Ancient of Magic, I believe I can conjure up a seeker spell to see if that helps," her friend Leta's mentor Enchantra offered.
The rest of the mothers agreed they played their part in finding this scared but unknown ghost.
