Layla's voiceover, "Grandma! Grandpa!
Luna's voiceover, "You have to see this!"
Miguel shouts, "We found a map!"
Crossfade to a plane flying in the night sky. Miguel's voiceover, "A map, the key to finally finding my missing parents."
The plane flies towards an island, after landing the plane Miguel Madrigal, in a pilot's uniform, jumps out and starts to climb up the mountain. At the top, he sees footprints embedded on a path. "This has to be them," Miguel takes off his helmet and flips the pages of his father's journal to the map. He continues following the footprints until he comes upon a temple. Miguel shines a flashlight over his surroundings, which resemble the inside of the boarding house. "Mommy? Papí? Where are you?" Miguel calls as he comes upon a room with two large doors guarded by two giant statues of his grandparents. The door shines a light and sees his parents, but their faces are obscured.
Javier and Blanca exclaimed in joy for their son, "Miguelito!"
Miguel quickly ran to them, "Mamí! Papí!"
Blanca with elation in her tone, "I can't believe how much you've grown!"
Javier smiles & notices his head, "And you're still wearing the hat we gave you!" Miguel approaches them for a hug, but they disappear.
Miguel looks around, calling for them, "Wait! I've been looking for you, trying to find you."
"I know. What have we missed?" His mother asks. Miguel keeps attempting to hug the couple but they keep vanishing and moving around as he gets closer. "Show us the neighborhood mijo," his father suggested but Miguel was confused.
"Huh?" He turns his head in the direction of a rumbling volcano in the distance as the scenery starts to warp. "This is weird! Mamí? Papí?"
Javier and Blanca both replied, "Yes, Miguel?"
"You've been lost for so long! I always hoped you would come back, but..." An airplane flies over their heads.
The pilot calls out from above, "Blanca! Javier! I need you for one last mission!"
Miguel's parents hop on the plane, "¡Espera! Where are you going?!" He pleads as he runs for them.
"We're off on another mission with Eduardo!" Javier says making the four-year-old cry, "No! Not again!"
"Adiós, Miguel!" they said as they flew away with Eduardo. Miguel looks down and sees a heart-shaped hole in his chest growing. Soon everything around him crumbles making him fall and float into an empty void.
Suddenly a swarm of butterflies came and revealed his cousins, Layla and Gaby, glowing with butterfly wings. Being lead by a winged Mirabel who radiates a warm glow as she holds Miguel safely in her arms. They flew out of the void and passed their friends, and family members: From Sánchez', Madrigals, Mondragóns, and Iglesias', waving alongside family members that had passed away like Bisabuelo Pedro and some friendly colorful skeletons. All were smiling at them as they flew over to a temple.
Dream Mirabel lands and gently sets Miguel down, as Layla and Gaby fly in to greet the two people sitting on two thrones. On the right side of the lady, is a tall tanned heavy-set man and the lady also seems tall, and plump, with a similar complex to tía Pepa. They appear important and regal, which can be intimidating especially since both of their faces are blocked in shadows. However, when the girls flew to hug them giggling, the couple revealed kind smiles and patted them softly on their heads.
Miguel's cousins then whispered in their ears and pointed them in his direction. They nodded thanks to them, clasped their hands, and stood up from their thrones to walk towards Miguel.
Miguel was nervous as they got closer they were giants! He looks up to Mirabel who smiles at him assuringly that he's safe. Then he looks at the couple but only sees their smiles as they kneel and say, in a calm and excited tone, "Hola, Míguelas!" Then the dream fades to white.
-Miguel's room-
Miguel Madrigal wakes up gasping and sits up from his bed. He looks at his clock and heads to his desk which is covered with photos and various objects connected to his parents. He then takes down a photo of his parents with Eduardo in the background but his image is blurred in the photo.
Miguel sighed, "I wonder if I'll ever find them?" he thought, then he looked at Papá Bruno's tablet that showed the whole family together. He smiles reminded that he will see them again hopefully someday out of the blue.
~Posada boring houses main floor~
Miguel exits his room and greets Antonio, Layla, Gabriela, and Luna Sánchez. They follow Miguel as he walks down the hall, a toilet is heard flushing and General Grandpapí Posada walks out of the W.C. "Hey niños don't-"
Miguel replies, "We know, Grandpapí," and shares an amused look with his housemates.
"Don't go in there for a while!" All the kids say in unison, giggling.
Grandpapí smiles at them and tosses Miguel's hair, "Ho-ho! You kids, know me so well!"
Miguel ponders something, "Did you wash your hands?"
At the boy's words Grandpapí quickly realizes, "I knew I forgot something," he walks back in, "Anyway how did you sleep?"
Miguel sighs, "Grandpapí, I had that dream again."
Antonio Madrigal son of Pepa and Félix, looks at his four-year-old second cousin curiously, "What happened?"
Miguel answers, "My parents were there — well, sort of — and they were going to stay..."
Grandpapí chimes in, "But then they left on another mission," He comes out of the W.C. "Oh, I'm sorry, Miguel."
"Me too Miguel," Luna Layla's aunt says, "We all miss them, but I'm glad you get to see them even if it's only in a dream," She added, with a hand on Miguel's shoulder as they share a smile with the other children.
Miguel also added what happened after, "Oh, there was something else in the dream," turns to his paternal primas, "You two were in it with butterfly wings, and so was Mirabel. We pass by all of you guys waving at us as we fly into a temple with these two big people on thrones."
"Who were they?" Asked Layla, his cousin from his Tío Ignácio Madrigal & Acacia Sánchez.
"What did they look like?" Asked Gaby, his cousin from Tía Angelina Madrigal & Mateó Mondragón.
"I don't know I couldn't make out their faces, they were tall and looked scary but weren't. They smiled at me and knew my name." He says to them feeling the serenity he got from the dream.
~Lobby~
Grandpapí Posada walks with the kids and tells them about his dream, "That's nice. It's better than the nightmare I keep having. I live in a rundown old house, renting rooms to a bunch of weirdos who always want things from me and my family."
As the old man and children enter the dining room, a couple of plates fly over Grandpapí's head.
Ernie Potts yells, "Hey, Gramps, what's for breakfast?! I'm starving over here! Starving, do you hear me?!" he bangs his fist on the table.
Grandpapí says to Ernie, "Imagine that!" Then mutters to the kids, "It's a living nightmare..."
Oskar begs, "Make me a sandwich, old man!"
Mr. Hyunh orders, "Crispy fries and a tofu burger for me, please, and step on it!"
Mr. Potts notices the kids and smiles at them, "Hey, Luna! Kids! Finally, someone with some sense around here!"
"Hi, Ernie!"
Oskar: "Hey, kids!"
Miguel: "Hi, Oskar!"
Mr. Hyunh: "Hey, kids, good to see you!"
Layla and Gaby greet him at the same time, "Hi, Mr. Hyunh!"
Then the children hug and greet the six members of the Madrigal family at the table. Which consisted of great grandma Alma, Aunt Julieta, Uncle Agustín, Antonio's parents Pepa & Félix, and finally Miguel, Layla & Gaby's lost abuelo, Bruno.
"Hola Papa Bruno!" they greet him, Bruno smiles, "Morning kids you just missed the others but they said to tell you good morning!"
The third generation of Madrigals, minus Antonio, are out in town, Luisa, Isabel, and Dolores are accompanying Angie and Ignácio to run errands. Mateó, and Acacia, are at work, and Zita & Chico are stopping by later with their kids. Mirabel and Camilo are at Zano's school doing homework.
Layla's twin baby brothers Manny and Michelangelo, are napping in their cribs along with, Gaby's new baby brother Jacob in the dining room, and all three baby boys are being watched by Luna's father Manolo Sánchez who is the patriarch of the Sánchez household. The children greet and hug him last.
Suddenly the kitchen door is kicked open by Maria Posada-Sánchez! The Sánchez Matriarch who is dressed as a union worker on strike, "All power to the working stiffs!" She yells, jumping onto the table as the startled guests stare at her, "All power to the proletariat! We demand a living wage!" she ranted into a megaphone as the whole room gawked at her, well half the room that was not familiar with Maria's behavior.
Agustín turns to the eccentric woman's husband for clarity and context, "Señor Manolo?"
The fifty-one-year-old musician replied, "I think I'll have a mimosa with breakfast," he says shaking his head at the wonderful, but extra, love of his life as she ranted and waved around on the table.
"Morning, Abuela! /Morning Ma! / Morning Nana Maria!" The children greeted her at the same time.
Maria turns to the children, smiling, "Hello, dears!" she greets normally. She can be much sometimes but she's always there when you need a friend.
Grandpa Posada not buying his daughter's antics, "You're not fooling anyone, Maria! It's your turn to cook!" She rolls her eyes at this nostalgic paternal lecture, "Back in the kitchen!" He orders as she jumps down and kisses the top of his head, "Sourpuss," He mutters at her as she smirks, and heads off to bring the food but not before stopping to kiss Manolo good morning. On the lips!
Miguel grabs an apple from the bowl and bites it, then notices Chapa sniffing him. Miguel laughs and the black-winged Jaguar licks him in affection but also pleads, "Chapa, I don't have any food. Oh, except this apple here," holding it up to the jaguar.
Chapa sniffs the fruit and grunts disgustedly as she turns her head away from it.
Maria returns with two big serving plates, one with egg whites and the other with turkey bacon, and places them on the center of the table. Oscar goes to grab some till Maria hits his hand with a spatula painfully reminding the greedy tenant to use the serving tongs.
Luna thinks about Chapa's hunger, then snaps her fingers, "I know what you want," she grabs some bacon and tosses some to Chapa, which he happily eats.
Chapa grunts happily as she catches more bird bacon in her mouth courtesy of her quick feline reflexes.
Luna checks her watch and shows the others it's time to go, "Bye, everyone! Come on, guys!"
Antonio hugs his parents goodbye as he joins the three four-year-olds and Luna into to hallway and out the door. Miguel tosses Chapa two pieces of turkey bacon but the jaguar only got one while Abner caught the other.
Mr. Hyunh shivers, "A pig eating bacon with a winged jaguar. It's creepy!"
~Outside Sunset Arms~
Geraldo or Gerald as his friends call him, is seen walking outside the building. Luna opens up the door. Several animals run out of the boarding house, followed by a bat. Gerald manages to dodge them all.
Gerald greets her, "Hey, Luna, ready for the best day of school?"
Luna raises an eyebrow at him, "The best day, Gerald?"
"Yeah. Today's the last day of the school week. Therefore, by my calculations..."
Luna finishes for him, "It's the best day."
Luna and Gerald do a thumbs-up handshake and wait with the younger kids for Miguel's Tío Chico Iglesias, and his wife Zita who is also Luna and Acacia's sister. Subsequently, the Iglesias clan arrived at the stoop and they walked the kids to P.S. 118. Along with the Iglesias son Raul, and their baby girl, Joy Iglesias is staying at the boarding house with her grandparents.
-Chico's classroom-
"All right, class, settle down!" Everyone pauses to listen to Chico. "I know you're all excited for the long weekend, but get ready for even more news!"
"Is it that I can do this?" Harold puts both of his fists into his mouth. Sid and Chavo applaud reluctantly.
"No, it's not, Harold," he proceeds with his report, "Anyway, we've been selected to compete in a contest! A great humanitarian organization in Central America, that helps the less fortunate, is sponsoring it."
Luna is intrigued at the news, the only moments Chico gets this excited are for picnics and dates with Zita, "They build habitats that provide living space in the rainforest and they want to celebrate kids that exemplify their spirit!"
"Señor Iglesias, what do we have to do to win the contest?"
"Excellent question, Phoebe! We submit a video presentation of our class being humanitarians in our neighborhood!"
"What's the prize?"
"Curly?" Chico asked his student Curly who performs a drumroll with his pencils on his desk. "A class trip to San Lorenzo!"
"San Lorenzo? The San Lorenzo?!"
"Is that the new restaurant?"
"No. That place has been there a while."
"Close, Chavo," Chico points to the map on the board, "It's a beautiful, proud republic in Central America. This is where we'll go if we win the contest."
"To a Central American restaurant!"
Chico replies in mock excitement with a valley girl accent, "OMG no!" He smiles and uses his normal voice, "To San Lorenzo, the country. The organization that hosts the winners is called, "Helpers for Humanity!"
Luna whispered to Gerald, "That was the group my sisters worked for!"
"And isn't it the same San Lorenzo where Miguel's parents disappeared? It's almost as if this contest is designed for you!"
"Quiet down, jerk faces! I'm trying to concentrate on the clock!"
"Class, I know you're excited to get to work on this video presentation," Rolls his eyes, "Even though it's the last day of the school week..."
The clock strikes two and the bell rings.
"School's out! TGIF!" The students stampede out the door.
"I have a weekend of stuff to eat!"
"So long, suckers! Hahaha!"
Chico sighs while smiling at his students' antics and sees Luna's hand raised. "I'll do it!"
Gerald agrees as well, "I will, too!"
Chico is happy with his two students, "Great! It's due in a week." (Brass sting.) "I know bad timing, but you can work with other kids from class, school, or home." he hints.
~The streets of San Angel~
Later that evening, Raúl, Luna, Gerald, Miguel, Layla, Gaby, and Antonio, all walked together with Jorge, Luna's other nephew from her eldest brother Alejó and Zano's grandmother, Doña Rivera, the dance instructor, who is watching them on their walk with headphones in her ears listening to music.
Raúl, after hearing what his aunt said, "To review, we'll make the best video ever!"
"We win the contest!" Added Antonio.
"Go to San Lorenzo, and find your lost parents," Gerald told Miguel. "Yeah!" the boy cheered happily but then remembered, "But the prize isn't for us to go looking for them," he said forlornly and added, "And after my last trip, I don't think our family would let me go if you won."
Gerald and Luna share a look, "True, but how can we not try to find your lost parents, especially since you've got us to help?" Gerald says as he gestures to himself and Luna. The rest of the group nods in agreement at the older boy's words.
Miguel smiles and nods his head that he's in. Luna quickly hugs Miguel, he has been like another nephew to her, slash little brother figure, since she only has older brothers and sisters. The same applies to his cousin Gaby, and her niece Layla and their siblings. There is also Raúl and Jorge but they live in other houses with their parents so they're not as close with Luna but she still loves them all equally. Though there are moments when she's mad at them though still likes them better than her teenage brother Zano at most times.
Luna laughs, "Okay, let's win this contest!" she says determined to help Miguel reunite with his parents and bring her Hero's sibling back.
Gaby says to Miguel, "And get you some answers. It'll be our secret," They fist bump and do his & Luna's thumbs-up handshake.
"Now, we just got to do something humanitarian," Gerald says as everyone starts thinking of ideas.
Jorge scratches his head in thought, "How about cleaning up the playground or something?"
The group thinks it's a good idea but feels it's not enough. They resume brainstorming.
Then Gabriella notices the resident hero, well helper of the community, commonly and generally known as Monkey Man, humming and planting a flower, "Monkey Man," He says quietly.
It's also a known fact that he doesn't have a house or even an apartment. He's a quirky but nice person, who helps people especially small kids from teenage punks who bully and mug them. So doesn't a kind hero deserve a fortress of his own?
Gaby snaps her fingers, "I know! Let's build a home for Monkey Man, right here by the river!"
Layla agrees with her raven-haired cousin, "Yeah, let's do that!"
Everyone votes for Gaby's plan but Luna who was skeptical, "That is a good plan Gaby, but I don't know. remember when I first brought him to dinner?"
"Oh yeah," the raven-haired four-year-old says as she remembers the MM incident that the Sánchez' youngest daughter referred to. "Man! Your parents sure weren't happy when you came home with a strange homeless man from the streets. Even if he did save your life. I still remember hearing them yell from across town." Gerald exclaimed recalling that day vividly.
"They calmed down after he proved he wasn't a threat. Heck, they even had a little respect for him and pity, after he told his origin story." says Raul, "Which he lost when he got a taste of the normal life."
Zano's abuela stops them, "¡Espere te niños!" They pause and look at her as she lifts her hand, "¡Mira!" She directs their attention to the snack kiosk that is surrounded by picnic tables. She leads the group to an empty one to sit and talk, "I'm going to get us some refreshments and food so stay put and listen to Luna and Gerald."
"Sí, Señora Rivera!" they replied. She gives them a kind smile and leaves to get in line.
"So, what happened with Monkey Man?" Asked Antonio who was only given a general summary of who Monkey Man was since he came to San Ángel. "Why wouldn't it be wise to build him a home?"
Gerald answers, "It's a long story, which happened after he saved Luna from these older high school boys trying to rob her and the others."
"I invited him to dinner at our house as a thank you!" says Luna. "and bought him a banana split!" Said Raúl.
"Wow!" The animal-loving Madrigal exclaimed, then looked confused, "But what's so bad about that?"
"It's coming. After giving him a taste of the normal amenities, like bathing, he begins to change," Gerald says to Antonio, "Change how?"
"In the worst way," Luna sighs, "I was worried at first since he got distracted from his duty as Monkey Man."
"But I dismissed it. I figured since he wasn't a real superhero, there wasn't any harm in letting the guy have some fun. Gerald confessed in mild regret, "Then we bought him new clothes."
The other kids started laughing uncontrollably, "He looked like Willy Wonka at the Chocolate Factory!" Everyone chuckled at the image.
Luna caught her breath and continued, "We went to the museum and he started hob-knobbing with the more affluent citizens in town."
"Bluebloods," Gerald says, "Then got an opera date with Alcaldesa Marmita."
"We told him our worries but he didn't care!" Gaby said angry at how MM acted. "Snobby Man!" Layla mocks his battle cry. Miguel nodded his head in agreement.
"Claimed it wasn't his job, let the police force and neighbor watches handle it," Raul pouts as Jorge nods in agreement both not happy with MM dismissing them like that at the time.
"That is bad, so what changed him back?"
Everyone shares a sad look, "After we left the opera house to meet up with Zano. Our friend Sid was jumped by the guys who tried to rob us."
Antonio gasped, "Oh no! What happened next did Monkey Man come and save him?"
Zano's grandma came back and handed everyone multi-vitamin-infused juices with ice, and two servings of veggie chips mixed with potatoes. All the kids took a sip before they resumed the story.
Luna shook her head, "Sid called out for him but MM didn't see him. Luckily Zano heard him screaming and made it just in time to fight them off before they could hurt Sid."
Antonio smiled in relief, "Thank goodness!"
"You should have seen my uncle in action! He was beating those bullies as they owed him money!" Layla exclaimed doing cute boxing poses.
"Sit down dear your drink is getting warm." Said Señora Rivera.
"Yes mam," the four-year-old Sánchez-Madrigal girl resumes drinking.
Zano's Abuela continues the story, "Sid was safe, yes. However, the thugs managed to get away with Sid's boots."
"Afterwards Monkey Man came back from his date and Sid started yelling at him for not being there when he was getting mugged."
"Isn't that a bit unfair? You said it yourself he couldn't hear Sid, and Zano made sure he didn't get hurt."
"True, but Monkey Man was still nearby when it happened, and Zano got a black eye from those creeps, if MM was more vigilant those jerks could have been arrested sooner."
"It was a bad day for everyone, but it made Monkey Man realize his mistake and made up for it by getting Sid's boots back while leading those punks into police custody."
"That's great!" Antonio says, then looks down, "I still wish we could build him a habitat on the water it sounds fun."
Luna giggles, "By the water Tony, not on the... wait a second. That could work!"
"Could what work?"
"We build MM a floating habitat! That way he has a shelter to recuperate and can move around the city to patrol! It's perfect!"
"We can use all the stuff by the river for materials! That way he won't forget his humble origins!"
Miguel suggested, "We can even get the grownups to help by providing labor and unused materials."
Antonio adds, "I can ask the animals around here and at home to help too!"
Raúl and Jorge chime in at the same time, "We have some old arts and crafts we can use for decoration!"
"Those are great ideas guys! I think we might have a shot at this." Luna writes down all their ideas, "Smart thinking Gaby!" The four-year-old girl smiles as the group compliments her in tangent with Luna's.
"You're a bold kid, Gaby!"
"Aw shucks," She says bashfully.
~Montage~
The kids get to work gathering supplies with help from the grown-ups of course. Including Isa, Luisa, Dolores, Zano, Camilo, and Mirabel who were helping them draw and design the layout with Ignácio, Félix, Agustín, and Mateó.
Acacia and her other bother Luis, search through a storage unit for unused art supplies and other materials for the habitat, with their nephew, Jorge, along with Alma and Bruno. All was going well until a spider landed on Luis which jumó-scared him into his sister's arms. Jorge giggles at his uncle's freak out, with Alma looking at them in concern and amusement, as Bruno puts the spider outside.
Back at the boarding house, Luna crosses off a day on the calendar. Getting everyone ready for the next phase.
The next day, Luna and Gerald get out some supplies from Grandpapí's Packard. The grownups started building the base making sure the kids only helped out with the safe age-appropriate aspects of construction. Abuela Alma, was also there helping Isa, Pepa, Dolores, and Layla with the gardening, and also to keep an eye on this strange Monkey man who showed them what he's planted so far. Her eldest grandchildren assured her that he was harmless but she was still skeptical.
'Who names themselves Monkey Man while running around in pajamas in public?' She thought.
As the montage continues, the kids and Monkey Man continue their handiwork and Luna crosses more days off her calendar. Luisa and Gerald take a sofa out of the dumpster, but some homeless people look angrily at them.
~The riverbank~
After a few finishing touches the habitat is done and staying afloat on the water. "Almost... Done!" Luna says as everyone steps back to see their hard work.
"Wow! It looks surprisingly good!" Isabel says. "Considering some of the stuff we used came from the dumpster."
Alma kneeling to her great-grandchildren, "You kids were so sweet to do this for the Monkey Man." she says and his them in pride for their sweet nature. "But don't ever invite him for another sleepover, I think he gave your poor tío Camilo fleas!"They turn their heads to Alma's third grandson who has been scratching his head a lot lately.
"Monkey Man!" he shouts in gratitude as he hugs Luna and Gerald. He rushes inside, already loving his new mobile fortress.
"All right places people time for the final step!" Gerald starts recording the finished habit everyone who helped is standing by it proud that it came out great.
Luna narrates, "Where once was a dirty urban riverbank, we've provided a comfortable, floatable, dwelling for one, as well as a habitat for the local birdlife!"
"Monkey Man!" he exclaimed in joy at his new fortress grateful for the kids for doing this for him.
"That's great, Luna! Now I just need to shoot a few angles of our awesome and completed habitat!" Gerald said while recording with a camcorder till he was interrupted by angry homeless people.
The adults and Teens keep the kids out of the cranky and smelly mob's way. Soon the homeless started raiding the habitat to get their stuff back.
Homeless Man: "I was hoarding that!"
Homeless Woman: "My tire collection!"
Homeless Man: "Thief! Thief!"
Homeless Man: "I'm takin' it all back!"
Homeless Woman: "They took my stuff!"
Homeless Man: "That bird's my lunch!" he reaches for the seagull but the habitat starts to fall to pieces into the river.
"No! Oh..."
Monkey Man sadly lets out, "M... M... Monkey Man!!" After Monkey floats out of their sight in the ruined habitat, all the little Madrigal kids, plus Raul and Jorge, with Luna, start to pack it in, with sadness in their hearts.
"Hey, guys, where ya going?" asked Gerald.
"That was our last chance to find Miguel's parents," Luna said holding a tearful Miguel's hand as they all headed home.
Gerald sadly walks away to reveal Helga spying on them from a trash can.
~The park~
Luna walks through the park looking at various happy families enjoying their evenings. Abner approaches her with Miguel carrying his leash telling her the piggy wants a walk.
Putting Abner's leash on him, Luna and Miguel walk Abner through the park. Miguel suddenly spots who he thinks are his parents, but it turns out not to be them as they go and hug a baby that was about to do what he did when we came here with his parents.
~The pier~
They spot the homeless people who wrecked their project and Monkey Man floating on a makeshift raft having a good time.
"Monkey Man!" He shouted as the Homeless People copied, "Monkey Man!"
Good for Monkey Man, but the wholesome scene leaves a bad taste in their mouths. The trio of two kids and a pig make their way back home when they bump into Helga.
"Hey! Sheesh, Lunada! Watch it! Stop crashing into me!" Abner grunts at the rude girl's scornful words.
"So, taking a walk and thinking about how you've completely flopped so far in winning that San Lorenzo contest? Ha! This just in: you = failure!"
Abner Snorts angrily getting the girl to back off. "I was just kind of thinking about Miguel, and how he hasn't seen his parents since he was a baby," Helga's expression changed, "I wish I could do more to help," Miguel hugs Luna tightly as she rubs his head in comfort.
Helga feeling sympathetic for the boy and not used to comforting, "Well, I— That's news. I mean if you... wanted to talk about... f-f-f-f..." exhales, "F-f-f... f-feelings!"
Abner Squeals angrily and butts his head at Helga's leg. "Sorry, Helga. I think Abner's got to do a number two. See ya. C'mon, Abner." Luna says as they walk away from her.
Helga groans, "Thwarted by an imbecilic pig! All I wanted to do was tell Luna that I'm there for her! I'm listening. I'm remembering everything she says. So, I resort to what I do best: being scorching mean!" Helga kicks a rock, which hits right back in her head. "Ow! Okay! I'll be kind..." *sighs* "And, understanding, and..." Sees the contest flyer. "Aha! If I help them win that trip to San Lorenzo and help her uncover the mystery of Miguel's long-lost parents—maybe even find the lost losers—then Luna will be eternally grateful... and might even return my friendship! It's a win-win! What a great plan! Wee!" she cheers as she spins around in joy.
~Electronic Store~
Helga emerges from the rooftop, takes the dust cover off something, and plugs an unknown electronic device in, which turns out to be a Glasses-shaped version of the Bat-Signal, which Phoebe spots from her room and rushes to Helga's hideout.
Helga goes into her closet, lifts her poem shrine, and goes into a secret surveillance room. "Phoebe, I need a hero video stat!"
"Right. Sánchez tapes. Pulling!"
A TV screen lights up and reveals Helga who is in the video trying to figure out how to work a video camera for the first time, "How does this thing— Oh!" she finally figured it out.
The screen then shows a clip from a past, in which Miguel, Antonio, Mirabel, Zano, and Maria are washing away the graffiti and trash off of the sad mistreated turtle.
"Oh, that's right! Miguel and that Tony kid saved that dumb turtle!" More clips are played showing the family's previous deeds. "They've helped half the city! I'll show those judges why Luna's got to win!" As she takes out a tape she ponders to Phoebe, "We're going to need help. But for now, I need someone to make something out of all these."
Helga and Phoebe decided whom to ask and left to drag two more people into their little meeting with Gerald. Since Zano told them he had homework and Helga can't intimidate him like other bull-headed boys.
Anyway, Gerald, Mirabel, and Camilo are watching Helga's videos of the family. Scenes of Luna helping Grandpapí wash dishes, clips of Angie helping out at the flower shop, and Luna tutoring Torvald, all on Helga's video camera.
"Mm-mm-mm," Gerald says, "This is an epic story you're asking for, Helga. Where'd you get this footage?"
"Security cameras, okay?!"
"Uh-huh. All are labeled and organized in perfect sequence. Whoa! That's Zano's bedroom! How'd you—"
Helga closes the laptop, "Never mind!" The two madrigal teens stared at the girl wide-eyed and in concern.
Gerald breaks the awkward tension, "Major creep factor aside, you know this footage is what we need to win the contest right? I thought you hated Luna. Why are you suddenly helping her?"
"Because otherwise, I'd have to watch that stupid family mope all summer!" Mirabel and Camilo glare at her, but Gerald and Phoebe laugh knowingly, "We've got to make this video work so Luna can get to stupid San Lorenzo! It matters to them, doi! You in?" Helga asked.
Mirabel and Camilo chimed, "We're in!"
"Okay, I'm in. But only if you get everybody to help."
"No problem. They can just talk to Old Betsy here."
"I'm pretty sure you won't have to resort to violence," said Mirabel.
"Are you sure your fifteen?" Helga asks the naive older girl.
"Never mind. Let's do this!"
It's the next day or night. The bus pulls up to the boarding house, and Luna, Miguel, Bruno, and Chapa walk up to the door, coming from another sad walk.
Bruno picks up a sad Miguel in his arms, who clings to his grandpa's neck in fear of losing him like his parents, then General Posada opens the door for them and moved to let them inside.
"Well, that was one long, sad walk. I almost rented your rooms out."
Luna sighs, "Hi, Grandpapí," She greets him, as she walks past him, to the stairs heading up with Bruno right behind her, still holding his forlorn grandson in his arms.
"Someone came to see ya. They're up on the roof."
"The roof?"
Grandpa Posada shrugs, "I just work here, Lulu," he says to his youngest granddaughter.
They walk up to the roof. As Luna opens the door. Everyone they know from Family and Friends to Neighbors and Local shop owners gathered on the roof and yelled, "Surprise!" To the Sánchez girl and Madrigal boy, who looks to his grandpa Bruno in wonder at what this was for? The fortune teller replies with a simple smile to his grandson.
Luna gasps, "This is incredible!" Miguel adds, "Everyone's here!"
"You better have a seat, guys."
"Why?" Miguel ponders as he and Bruno sit by the rest of the family.
Luna sits down with the same inquiry, "What's going on?"
Gerald signals later and then calls, "Lights!" The lights are dimmed and a video starts.
On the screen is a sign being held up with "THE LEGEND OF SANCHEZ-MADRIGALS!" written on it. The sign is removed to reveal Sid on the stoop of the boarding house. "The Legend of this family will be passed down from kid generation to kid generation and onward, and Gerald is the Keeper of All Legends, the Teller of All Tales. Take it away, Gerald."
Gerald clears his throat, "We call her "Luna", friend to all, a force for decency, doer of good. And this is her family."
Gerald continues, "They're the most dependable, trusty, true blue friends I can ever imagine." He says as clips appear showing the family in action, "Help you in a second, no questions asked and I know plenty of others say the same. Let's hear from some people whom these guys have helped."
Luna's classmate Rhonda is seen taking pictures with her camera, "They help me get over myself. I'm becoming more tolerant, gracious, and self-effacing. Oh, and humble. I'll get a copy of this, right?"
Pigeon Man another character the kids brought for dinner appears, "Miguel, Layla, and Gaby helped me escape the cage of my old rooftop habitat. Now, I'm as free as a bird! Merci, kids." Pigeon Man is shown to be outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Big Patty, the buff girl reminds Luisa of herself at that age, "Luna listened to me and treated me just like another friend. She's, you know, pure of heart. I'll never forget that, Luna."
During these next few lines, reactions are seen from the people watching the film.
Coach Wittenberg on video, "I can inaudibly say that the over-esteemed Zano put the "Coach" back into "Coach Wittenberg!"
Harold on video, "I was a one-dimensional bully until Luna showed me my sensitive side."
Gerald back on video, "Pure of heart. That's them. And that's why they deserve to win the trip to San Lorenzo because they've done so much for others. They're humanitarians, just like their parents, and they help us through humanity!"
The entire gang, sans Luna, is seen sitting on the boarding house stoop.
"Hey, guys. You're bold kids and true heroes."
At the end of the film, Harold and Chavo attempt to moon the camera while everyone in the film and the audience on the roof gasps, but Sid holds up a "THE END" sign over them. Sid laughs nervously.
Applause and cheers roared from the crowd as Miguel wiped away happy tears from his eyes.
"Thank you all so much! But aren't we too late to enter the contest?" Luna asked Chico.
Smiling, Chico clears his throat, "Good news, Luna! Once the Helpers for Humanity saw the video, we were immediately selected to go to San Lorenzo! We won!"
Everyone cheers, Layla, Gaby, Antonio, Raúl, Jorge, and Miguel hug Luna in joy for winning. Everyone was happy for her, but the kids, parents, siblings, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents, and great-grandparents, all looked concerned at what might lie ahead in San Lorenzo.
Even Grandpapí Posada worried for his youngest nieta especially if she's anything like her mother and sisters, "Hmmm."
Chico with his arm around Zita, "Don't worry. Every minute is planned out for this trip. Thank you, Cia. We'll be fine," He says to assure everyone.
Grandpa was doubtful, "Mm-hm. You ever traveled with a dozen kids before?"
"I live with a dozen kids and teach them every day alone with no backup!" He joked. "Besides I won't be alone on this trip," Chico says assuring the old man. "Let me guess?" the old general smirks and turns to the Madrigals.
~With Luna~
Luna hugging Gerald, "I know this video wouldn't have happened without you, Gerald. I can't thank you enough!"
"You should thank Helga. This was her idea. You should see all the stuff she has of-"
"Of the things! Ha, around the city, amazing! Anyway, it's done. We're going to San Lorenzo."
"Wow! Thank you, Helga," Luna puts her hand gratefully on Helga's shoulder, causing her to get a warm feeling. "And I... have to go wash my socks!" She leaves.
Luna's room
Luna is at her desk flipping through the pages of Javier's journal that Miguel wants her to have on the trip, along with one of his papa Bruno's vision tablets, she puts them away before her father, Manolo Sánchez enters.
"Well, Lulu, your passport's here," The fifty-something-year-old man presents his youngest daughter with her passport.
"All right!" she tries to grab it but Manolo moves it out of her reach.
"Ah-ah-ah-ah! Not yet!" he says as he looks into her eyes pleadingly, "Now, Lunita, I'm worried about you taking this trip. Remember all the trouble your sisters and Cuándos got into with that evil river pirate, La Sombra?!"
"A year ago Javier and Blanca caught wind of him hiding in the jungle when they were visiting her village!" *Sighs* "That was practically the last time we heard from them..." he says solemnly in thought feeling sad for his surrogate grandson.
Luna snatches the passport from Manolo's hand breaking him out of his stupor. "Oh, fine. Don't forget to sign it with your name as it appears on your birth certificate."
Luna signed, "Lunula... Posada-Sánchez." Satisfied she packs it. "Papí, San Lorenzo is a big country. I doubt I'd be able to find them before the trip ends and I doubt that I'm going to run into this "La Sombra" guy while I'm there."
"Pfft! Let's hope not! This is just a school trip to visit the rainforest, not about you finding Miguel's parents on some grand adventure!"
"Don't worry, Papá. I'll stick with my class the whole time," then she pulls out a photo, "But since I'll be in San Lorenzo, I have to at least look up Eduardo. He was their best friend!"
Manolo sighs looking at the blurred image of the man, "Well, you could do that at least but don't take any travel suggestions from him!" He warns her.
Maria kicks the door open dressed as an old-timey general and blows a trumpet poorly. Maria then presents a handmade blowpipe to her daughter, "Venture forth with this, Kimba."
Manolo astonished at his wife's dangerous gift, "Maria! Lulu will never get a handmade blowpipe through security! Oh, and, uh..." Rummaging through Luna's drawer, takes out a stapler, "Here, Lunita. Take this instead. It'll remind you of home."
"Um, thanks?"
Maria and Manolo hold each other, worried for their baby girl, "Just be careful, Luna!"
-Morning San Ángel Airport-
On the airport runway, everyone is there saying goodbye, Mirabel is there in pants and a shirt, along with Camilo, Isa, and Luisa, hugging their parents, cousins, and grandmother farewell.
Chico hugs Zita goodbye, with Joy secured to her back giggling as he tickles her, then they turn to one of his students carrying a big plate, "Harold, why do you have a deli platter?"
"My mom gave me this in case there's no food in San Lorenzo."
"There's plenty of food there, Harold. No platter necessary."
"No platter?" Harold eats one of the sandwiches and puts the rest into his pants, then throws the platter away.
With the Madrigals, Julieta is making sure she packed plenty of homemade medicine since they couldn't sneak her food into the terminal without making the security dogs go nuts. "I hope these are enough for all of you?" Julieta says as she hugs each of her girls.
"Mama, don't worry your homeopathic remedies are just as effective as your recipes," Isa assures her nurturing mother.
"She's right Mom. Papí's bee stings can vouch for that!" Mirabel, who is wearing teal pants, says making them laugh.
"It is great that your gift also works when you make medicine instead of food Mamá. Who knew!" Exclaimed Luisa who is also wearing pants for the trip and a long delved version of her shirt.
"Food is better!" Camilo commented, as the girls glared at his intervention, while Julieta stared at him, he pretended to look around, "Who said that?" then his mother pulls him into a hug praying and begging him to be safe. His sister Dolores is there too, wearing earplugs, and patting their emotional mother's back along with their father, Félix.
Zano and Luna's parents are telling them to be careful and for Zano to help Chico keep the class, *coughs* Luna *coughs* and the Madrigals together as much as he can. The fifteen-year-old Sánchez boy nods his head, understanding the severity of his parent's words. He shares a hug with his family, Grandpapí and Abuela Rivera. Then says bye to his childhood friends Ernie and Marisol.
After Alma gives her goodbye to her four grandchildren, Agustín breaks his hug from Isa, Mirabel, and Luisa to warn them before they boarded. "Niñas, you're going to the jungle of an unfamiliar country without your mother and me."
"Uh, Dad it's in Central America," Luisa corrected her worried father, but Isa just hushes her that it was too late as their well-meaning father starts rambling.
"So, don't catch any tropical diseases like malaria, or diphtheria, or cholera..." the three sisters shared a look in confirmation that he was long gone. Mentally and Temporarily. They hope.
~On the airplane~
Mirabel and Luisa are seated together with Isa across from them to their left. "...or yellow fever, or hookworm, or elephantiasis, or leprosy, or tennis elbow..." Agustín continues listing diseases to his daughters as he is escorted out by a stewardess.
Isabela is seated on an isle seat next to Helga's older sister Olga who Isa notices are a perky, bright contrast to her meaner, brasher sister. Despite the obvious differences, their dynamic makes Isa think about how she was with Mirabel. "Except Olga cares for her little sister more than I did back then..." she thought in remorse, "Does this gringa ever shut up?" Isa thought as Olga kept chatting.
Mirabel opens the window and sees her dad outside causing her to yelp in surprise! Her sisters turn to her direction and see Agustín outside their little sister's window. "DAD?!"
"...or itchy armpits, or boom-boom fever, or Alder's neck rash!" The father is listed as he is being driven by Zano and Luna's mother, Maria, on a mobile stairway to allow Agustín to finish his ranting.
"Hey, crazy lady! Get out of my stair truck!" Shouted the crewman.
Maria laughs dementedly not listening to the angry man, as she pushes the pedal the metal.
"...or Palmer's knee, or Borneo's disease, or... I don't know... athlete's foot!" He yells as the airplane takes off into the sky.
Back on the plane, Luna giggles to Gerald, "You know, I'm going to miss my parents," Luna's travel bag suddenly moves. She takes off her seatbelt to unzip the bag, revealing... "Abner!" Who pops out and licks Luna in joy. "What are you doing here?"
"Guess your Mom wasn't going to let you leave your pig behind," Gerald guessed.
Luna laughs, "Yep. I guess we've got a stowaway!"
Sitting with Zano, Camilo looked at the pig in disbelief, "Your mom managed to sneak a pig on board but my tías food was spotted a mile away!"
Chico hears the boy's stupefaction, "I'm pretty sure we're going to be in more trouble for this than we would have if we did manage to sneak Miss. Julieta's cooking."
"Which baffles me, how exactly can bringing outside food on a trip be a safety hazard?" Camilo.
"It's not, they just say that so they can eat the food without any complaints." Zano joked.
"I knew it!" Camilo says from the cool teen's fake conspiracy. "I was joking dude."
Little did Luna, Zano, or the Madrigals, know how much depth Luna's words about stowaways rang true, for unknown to the group in coach, way back in the bagging compartment, little voices were coming from that Rhonda girl's oversized suitcases.
~San Lorenzo airport~
The airplane lands in San Lorenzo, and all the passengers deplane. In baggage claim, Rhonda was in disarray as she was told her suitcases had been opened causing all the contents to fall out. "Why?!" the high-maintenance socialite cried, as her best friend comforted her through her dramatic stage, which will be followed by her outrage.
Meanwhile, the rest of the class and chaperones were waiting for their luggage when... "Atención! Will a Señor Zano Sánchez, and Señorita Mirabel Madrigal. Please report to the front desk immediately!" This made both teens turn their heads at the speaker, "We found children stowed away in the storage area and claim to be in your group! Please report to..."
The teenage Sánchez let out a loud groan at the news, "They wouldn't..." he facepalms at the idea of those kids doing something this reckless.
"Maybe it's one of the members of our group or a simple mistake?" Mirabel says, focusing on the possibilities, though her fantastical optimism didn't succeed to deter the silver-haired teen from his thoughts of irritation since he's had first-hand experience with his niece and pseudo sobrinos' antics on sneaking into trips there not supposed to be on!
Zano and Luna's Cuándo, Chico, walks up to the pair, "Either way, you two better go check to make sure. Cam, Isa, Olga, Luisa, and I will do a head count to make sure everyone is here," the big guy said as both teens nodded, one with a warm smile, and the other with cool indifference that's both annoying yet attractive for some insane reason.
Mirabel and Zano left, "With any luck it's either Niño Chocolate thinking we're going to Chocó fields, or that Curly Kid got busted rummaging through Rhonda's stuff... again," He sneers, as Mirabel stares in confusion at his words about Curly and a chocolate kid?
As they arrived at the Front desk they see the cute guilty faces of Miguel, Layla, Gabriela, and... "Tónito?!" Mirabel says, surprised to see her cousin and second cousins, as she quickly checks to see if they were all right.
"What is going on here?" Zano asked the officer standing next to them.
"These children stowed away on the plane. In a big suitcase. Lucky for them they brought their passports," he hands them to Zano who stares at the kids blankly as they look down. "Chico is going to love this," he groans as he and Mirabel take the little stowaways with them.
Back at the boarding house, everyone is back from bailing Maria and Agustín out of the airport jail.
Acacia is doing the dishes with her father. Baby Manny and Mikey are playing with Bruno. Ignácio, Angelina, and Dolores are comforting they're sad Tíos who already miss their children. Alma is reading Jacob a story, while Maria is doing yoga with Joy and Zita. Suddenly the kitchen phone Rings.
Zita gets up from her mat, "I'll get it!" she answers the phone, "Oh, hey honey how's the flight?" Chico tells her what happened. "THEY'RE WHERE?!" The babies cried at Zita's outburst.
"Zita, you scared the babies!" Angelina pointed to the woman. "Sorry, Angie but we got a major problem!"
"What's wrong?" her twin sister asked.
"Layla, Miguel, Gaby, and Tony are in San Lorenzo!"
"What?!" Everyone bursts into shock, "MY BABY!" Thunder roared outside which made the babies cry more. Dolores covers her poor ears in pain from all the noise. Soon everyone tries to calm down the scared babies while Félix gives his daughter an arepa as Pepa calms down to fetch her earmuffs.
"How did this happen? We dropped them off at school before we left for the airport so they wouldn't have the chance!" Angie exclaims. "We even locked Chapa and Parce in the crates till we got back.
"They snuck into one of the cars while we weren't looking," Zita says shaking her head at her sobrinos' latest stunt.
"What about Raúl?" Manolo wonders about his youngest grandson who often gets involved with the trio's antics.
"He stayed behind and told the teachers they have the flu," Zita says to her father.
Everyone facepalms.
"What are we going to do?" Asked Bruno.
Angie and Ignácio share a knowing look as Angie makes the call to an old friend.
"Hello E," she says to the phone.
After the call, it was all arranged. Angie and Mateó quickly pack their bags while Angelina informs her father, Bruno, what to do with Jacob, "Jacob's schedule is all on that list. If you feel lost feel free to ask Mr. and Mrs. Sánchez for help, or Joaquín, and Zita. Though for god sake's do not let Ramirez bring him to the racetrack to use as a good luck baby, Layla smelled like cigars for a week." She pleads to her father. Parce and Chapa nudged the woman with their heads. Telling her they want to go along, their kids' need them!
"Ay, Chiapa you don't even like the train ride, and Parce you complained to Antonio that you hated the pet carrier," The cats purred pleadingly at the female triplet who sighs 'As if I can say no to pets who want to protect their human friends' she thought to herself. "All right, you can come but you two better behave or it's the crate!" She tells them as they lick her cheeks in gratitude making her laugh.
Ignácio and Acacia are doing the same except that they're talking with Zita, "So my family will stay and help with the kids and Grandparents, but are you sure you don't want to go instead, Z?" Ignácio asked his sister-in-law.
"Chico is your husband," Acacia added to her husband's inquiry.
"I'm sure, after all, I have to stay and discipline Raúl about helping his cousins' stowaway on planes behind mommy's back." They laughed.
Soon the two couples got on a plane to fly off to San Lorenzo. They were prepared for whatever danger they might face which is why they donned on their old mission gear and packed Chico's just in case.
Outside the San Lorenzo airport where people are waiting for cabs. "Okay now that the angry calls are done. FYI! Your mothers are not happy, so, make sure your sad faces are on point," Chico says to them tussling Miguel's hair and hat, "So, you four are going to be tethered to one of us until we reach the boat, or until your parents come flying head first to get you. Whichever comes first," Chico says, as he cuffs Gaby to his arm. Zano was paired with Layla. Camilo with his little brother, Antonio. And Mirabel with Miguel.
Chico to his students, "Class! We need to stay together while we explore, and then go to the river docks at 3 pm, then—" The kids run off.
"Stop! Running is not on Acacia's agenda. You'll bring forth her wrath! River docks at three!" he yells hoping they at least heard that. "Least I can say I tried," he says to Gaby as she nods.
The kids head into some taxi cabs, along with a chaperone, and head to the city.
~Ciudad de Puerto Clara~
Luna, Gerald, and Abner managed to walk by themselves without being stopped by the chaperones.
"Well, Luna, we made it to San Lorenzo. So, where do we start looking for Miguel's mom and dad?"
"Sorry, Gerald. I promised my parents I wouldn't, but Papá did say I could find their best friend, Eduardo," she pulled out a letter, "I found this old envelope with Eduardo's address on it," She tells him while they look at the passing doors.
"Here it is!" Luna knocks on the door, which is still open. They head inside.
"Whoa," They survey the house, which is a mess, and the TV is still on showing a soccer game. "What happened?"
"It looks like Eduardo kind of left in a hurry," Abner makes his way toward a framed photo of Javier, Blanca, and Eduardo, with Eduardo's face torn out.
Abner sniffs, and squeals anxiously which made Luna concerned for her pig, "Abner, what is it, boy?"
"I don't know what's bugging' Abner, but we better get back to meet Iglesias, Luna. We can't miss the boat."
The two friends leave along with Abner who's still afraid of the scent he caught hopefully he can warn his owner before it's too late.
A parade passes by as Luna and Gerald meet up with the rest of the class. Chico was waning out of coherent thought from a head injury. Luisa was in charge of keeping him steady and was now tied to Gabriela.
"Hello! Welcome! You must be Señor Iglesias and your P.S. 118 class. My name is Eduardo!"
The class greeted, "Hi, Eduardo!" Luna and Gerald gasped, "Eduardo?"
Zano skeptical, "Eduardo?"
Eduardo gasps at the big man, "Chico? Could it be? Chico! It's me, don't you recognize me?!"
Chico whose brain is disoriented, squinted at him, "Eduardo? Man, I knew you were older than us but you look older than I remembered!"
"Ha-ha! ¡Qué buen Fortuna! My chubby amigo! I am the captain of this boat, and I will take you up the river to the rainforest. We'll go straight to the habitat that my group, Helpers for Humanity, made!"
"Yes, like our parents!" Miguel said.
Eduardo gasps, "Is that Miguel?" then notices Miguel's cousins, "Layla and Gabriela! My goodness, you have all gotten so big. Chico, I'm surprised and elated that you brought them," Then muttered, "Their mothers are aware of this right?" he asked the injured teacher as he looked to the sky in fear.
"They snuck aboard our plane ride..."
"Uh-oh," Eduardo says worried as he looks down at the three tagalongs who smile innocently while pushing the dirt with their shoes.
"We called their parents to alert them. By the time we reach the location, they'll have arranged a pick-up to take them home," Zano says as he stands in front of the three four-year-olds, blocking them from the strange man's view.
Eduardo stares at the silver-haired teen curiously, "You look familiar have we met?"
"Probably, the name's Zano Sánchez," he says as the man's face lights up at the name. "Ah, yes Cia and Zita's baby brother! My god you've gotten big," sees Chico and Luisa, "Well not that big but you've defiantly grown."
"Excuse us Captain Eduardo but shouldn't we start boarding?" Luna asked the strange man who claimed to be her eldest sister's friend. "By the way, I'm Luna Sánchez."
"Luna! Last I saw you were only a toddler," He shakes her hand, "And of course! We all work together. Yes!"
Gerald shaking Eduardo's hand, "Hi, I'm Gerald. What a relief. We thought that something bad—"
Harold interrupts holding his stomach, "Captain Eddie, is there a toilet on this boat?!"
"Of course, of course, disculpé. Where are my manners? Everyone, all aboard!" Everyone boards the boat.
Chico looking at the list, "We're on the boat, we're on schedule, the captain is an old friend I can't recognize. This'll be a perfect trip!" he exclaims as Luisa and Gaby find him a place to rest.
Zano follows them with Layla by his side, "Chico are you sure that's Eduardo?" he asks him still unsure about the captain.
"Honestly bro, my brain is so messed up I'm unsure who you are right now. Zane Right?" Zano sighed at his somewhat concussed in-law, making him out of commission by default, "Looks like we're going to need to keep our guards up during this boat ride, just in case," he thought to himself.
"Zano don't you recognize him you did meet him in person," Luisa says as she steadies Chico. "Once when I was a kid he could have changed by then?" he sighs considering the possibilities both good and bad, "Let's just hope he doesn't take us on any detours my sisters warned us about."
On the boat.
Eduardo gains the group's attention, "Everyone! I want to introduce my crew! This is Paulo."
"Hey."
"Steve."
"Hola."
"And Che," As Che enters, he is accompanied by Latin music and a dreamy-eyed Olga faints into Che's arms.
Helga rolls her eyes, "Everybody loves Olga."
"Where'd that music come from?" Isa asked her sister while they mildly looked around with Miguel.
The boat's whistle blows and the ship named the Doña Marina sets sail down the river.
Captain's cabin.
Minutes later Miguel no longer needed to be tethered to Mirabel, who allowed him to hang out with Luna. Now Luna and Miguel are talking with Eduardo.
"I still can't believe we're in San Lorenzo with you, Eduardo!" Luna says to the man.
"Is it fate? Who knows?"
"Eduardo, we have to know, where are Miguel's parents? Are they okay?" Luna asked.
Miguel looks to Eduardo with hope.
"Ah, Qué lástima," He sighs, "That's a mystery I have not yet solved myself, amigos. But I bet you'd like to hear my stories of your parents?" he says to Miguel.
"Yes, Please!" he said in excitement.
Eduardo smiles and ties the wheel of the boat, "Ha! Let's see! Eh, your father was always bumping into things and breaking them. I think he broke something the first three times he met your mother." He laughs, "His arm, his head..." Laughs as he sits down sighing, "They were both my best friends." Eduardo walks over to a small chest and pulls something out, "Your father would want you to have this." He puts an amulet around Miguel's neck. "It was a gift to him from the Green-Eyed People. You know, they helped each other many times..."
Miguel and Luna smiled at each other, then the amulet glowed a bright green. "Huh?"
"¡Ay, Qué— I've never seen this happen before! You truly must be chosen, Miguel; chosen by the green eyes! Surely you know that when you and tu primas were born, you three silenced the erupting volcano, Volcán Turriable?"
"It was in my papa's book!"
"The Green Eyes saw that, too! It fulfilled a prophecy!" The amulet stops glowing. "Maybe, when we are upriver, we — you two and I — we will find the Green-Eyed People. Maybe they will know the answer to the mystery of your parents?"
Gerald walks in, "Hey, guys, it's buffet time."
"I, uh..."
Eduardo assured them, "Go on, play. Friends should be with friends." They leave with Gerald as Eduardo steers the ship.
~Doña Marina deck~
Camilo and Harold are lying on their backs revealing full tummies. "I finished all the deli sandwiches, the carne con whiskers..." Harold takes a plate of fish heads underneath him, "Ooh!" Harold eats the fish heads, and his stomach rumbles, "Ah! Hmm! Clear the bathroom! Emergency! Kill me now!" he cries as he rushes to the bathroom.
Everyone giggles at the poor boys, misfortune, but Luna looks up and sees Eduardo in the crow's nest.
~The crow's nest~
Eduardo is looking through his binoculars.
Luna joins him, "Hey, Eduardo! What are you looking at?"
"Oh, nothing, Luna. Nothing at all. But this is the jungle, and you must always be aware of the dangers here."
"...Like La Sombra?" Eduardo looks at her when she said the name.
"So, you've heard about the infamous La Sombra. He was not happy that your parents stole back from him a precious treasure called the Corazón."
"Is he after us? We're in danger, aren't we? My friends, my family?"
"We could turn around and head back to safety, or we could continue ahead and maybe find out about Miguel's parents?"
"What?! But I promised... No. With you to protect us, we can keep going!"
Eduardo smiles, "Now, don't tell the others what we spoke about. I don't want to worry anyone, especially Chico since he's you know... in the Cabeza," He points to his head.
Luna nodded in understanding but was still a little doubtful, but unknown to Eduardo and the young Sánchez, a third party was listening from outside and went to warn the rest of the chaperones.
Hears Olga gushing like a schoolgirl, "Oh Che!" The couple walks past the third party unaware of his presence.
Except for one... Maybe?
~At night~
Gerald looks at Luna, "Anything wrong, Luna?"
"Uh, uh, nothing. Everything's fine."
"Come on, Lu. There are no secrets with us, right? And now you've got a secret with this guy you just met?" Luna just gives Gerald a look. "Fine," He leaves. Luna heads toward the crow's nest.
Boat's deck.
Mirabel is seen walking alone and trying to open her locket to see what Bruno's triplets put in it, then bumped into Zano, "Oh sorry about that!"
"Any reason you forgot to look?" He asks the distracted Madrigal.
She held up her heart. "I'm trying to open this," she said, holding up her heart. "When I got this, I've been trying to open it, hoping that it might jolt something loose in my memory about them."
"And so far, nothing?" Zano guessed.
"Nada! Not even Javier's Journal sparked anything except when the kids found that map!"
"What did you see?"
"More like what I heard? It was a willowing voice saying welcome to this day," The girl says, but sees Zano starting at the back of the river intensely like he's looking out for something, "Hey is something up?" she asks him as he turns to her, "More than you know," he sighs, "We need to talk to the other chaperones, now!" he says as he drags her to find them and warn them about what he heard.
Later Luna gasps as she spots a strange boat tailing them, "There's a boat coming!" Luna climbs down the crow's nest. Mirabel and Zano have already warned the others and now they're protecting the young ones.
Luna quickly spots Eduardo, "Eduardo!"
Abner sniffs Eduardo, snorts, squeals, and runs away. He tries to warn Luna but is ignored and jumps off the boat to get help.
Luna calls out, "Eduardo!" She pants, "There's... a ship!"
As lights shine on the two, the ship grapples onto the Doña Marina, and Steve and Paolo come out to fight them off.
"Luna, it's La Sombra!"
"I knew it! What are we going to do?!"
Eduardo grabs a machete, "We'll fight back and get away! Go to the young ones and stay down where they cannot see you!"
"But what about my friends?"
Eduardo shouts, "Forget them!!" he heads out to join his crew in fighting off the pirates.
Chico is inside the sleeping quarters with the class, "Oh, no a pirate attack? Not on my sister in law's agenda!" he says still confused, as he uses his strength to keep everyone safe by blocking the door. Miguel, Layla, Gaby, and Antonio are all huddled together scared of the loud fighting outside. Phoebe, Rhonda, and Helga are gathered around them in a protective circle while Chico keeps the pirates at bay. "Just great! The others better be winning!" Helga prays.
Back on deck, Luisa and Isa are using their powers and a few moves that Señora Sánchez taught them to fight off the pirates. Course Isa is only using a small portion of her powers.
Mirabel & Camilo are helping Zano disarm the pirates and So far, they're doing pretty well at that!
Olga watches in fear as Che fights, "Fight hard, Che!" She squeals, "But don't hurt your runway-quality chiseled face!"
Eduardo returns to the captain's cabin, "Hold on tight, amigos!" Luna bumps into the wall as he turns on some lights, then Luna sees the maps, "Yes, my friend. I'm changing course down the Río de Oscuridades! It has tricky and dangerous rapids! He wouldn't dare to follow!"
Eduardo speeds up the boat, making all the students fall onto the deck screaming. He turns the ship's wheel to change course, making the attackers, along with Steve and Paulo, falling overboard.
Luisa tries holding her sisters steady but was starting to get seasick, "Ugh! Who booked this?!"
"Bueno. La Sombra may be a ruthless river pirate, but he is not crazy — far from it."
The boat starts its treacherous path through the Río de Oscuridades. Everyone on deck and below is screaming as the boat continues down the rapids.
Camilo with his eyes shut, is holding onto Isa as she used her vines to tie them down. Isa screams, "MIRABEL!" as her little sister is tossed across the deck screaming, "Aah!" Luisa and Zano quickly grab her as she slides by them, "Hold on, Mirabel!" Luisa says to her sister.
Eduardo makes another sharp turn that causes Isa's vines to snap forcing her and Camilo to slide down the deck, "AHHH!" but was stopped thanks to catching on to Mirabel, now the five of them were holding each other steady, through the perilous rapids.
"I'm going to punch that idiot when we get out here!" Zano yells, quoting Blanca.
"If we get out!" Luisa yells, "AHHHHH!"
Down below the students and the young Madrigals were all screaming and holding onto Chico who was acting as an anchor preventing them from being thrown across, while also screaming like a little girl. "OH, MY GOD! HOLD ON TIGHT KIDS! AH!"
Back at the captin's roost Eduardo sees the upcoming drop, "Hold on tight!" The boat goes down a waterfall and smashes into some rocks. Forcing it to stop moving.
Luna rushes below deck to Zano as he holds her in his arms. Eduardo runs below deck right after telling Che, the Madrigals, and the Sánchez siblings to, "Grab what you can!" and kicks open the door to the sleeping quarters, "Everyone, abandon ship!" he yells as Chico runs out carrying all the children while jumping into the water and rushing them all to shore. Luisa does the same with Zano, Luna, Cam, Che, Olga, and her sisters as they abandon the ship.
As soon as everyone is onshore and accounted for, Zano checked Luna to make sure she was safe and sound. Luna spots Chico & Miguel and rushes to them as they hug her, both relieved that she's all right.
Antonio rushed to his brother and cousins along with Miguel, Layla, and Gabriela. Mirabel and Camilo hugged and kissed the little animal lover, equivalent to his parent's mannerisms making Antonio feel safer. Luisa wept as she held Layla and Miguel in her big comforting arms, which they snuggled into to settle their nerves, happy that they were safe but sad that they were in danger. Isa is the opposite of her sisters and cousin, though she holds Gabriela in relief, "Thank goodness you're all okay!" The flora powered Madrigal exclaims as she comforts the shaken four-year-old.
"Is anyone injured?!" Zano loudly asks the students. Everyone answered no but Olga insisted that they do a double-check just to be sure there are no internal injuries, which the older parties agreed on, despite the teary-eyed Olga currently smothering her little sister, Helga, while crying in relief that she was all right.
After a quick examination, no one had any injuries, so Eduardo, Che, Chico, Luisa, and Zano went to gather as many supplies as they could from the ship. Isa, Olga, and Mirabel stayed with the kids to see if any of the bags fell into the water & to set up a makeshift camp.
"Mirabel what's going to happen to us?" asked Antonio clutching his stuffed jaguar, Parce, in fear. Mirabel hugs him and sighs, "I don't know primo, hopefully, the habitat is not far from here and we're all together so we'll be okay," She looks up to the sky praying that her Abuelo is watching over them.
In the early morning at the shipwreck, everyone is awake and safe but remains stranded and the supplies they could salvage are low.
Luna was calling for Abner but so far, no signs of the pig. "Where could he be?"
"Don't worry Luna I'm sure he'll turn up soon," Mirabel says.
Gerald stretched, "So, who's starving?"
"Oh, I have snacks in my other luggage. I'll just go back and get them," She says. "Oh, come on?!" Exclaimed Camilo. Zano tells him, "Let it go, Cam!"
Rhonda begins to head to the ship which explodes. "Or not."
"Miércoles," Isabel says as she tightly holds her sisters' hands. "Cool!" Layla and Gaby say in Chico's arms along with Miguel who remains wide-eyed and quiet.
Snapping his fingers, "Now, friends, let me explain what happened back there," Eduardo begins but one of the students jumps in, "A thrilling, classic chase scene! And now we're shipwrecked and lost!"
"Why does he sound happy about that?" Luisa says.
Eduardo coughs, "Untrue. We have escaped an unexpected attack, and our boat is unfortunately wrecked, but there is good news. We are not lost. We can hike from here to our jungle habitat, a safe place."
Camilo, with Antonio on his shoulders, asks Eduardo, "Is the habitat a short walk from here?" he asks, hopefully.
Eduardo solemnly says, "Oh, no. No, it's many, many... many miles, over rough trails,"
Rhonda rubs her head, "Oh, that is such bad news."
"Through steep, muddy jungle..."
"Ugh, just got worse."
"But then it smooths out..." Students sighed. "And becomes an enormous swamp." he finished.
The students groan at the long journey.
Zano wolf-whistles, getting everyone's attention, "Okay, I demand an explanation, Eduardo! What happened back there? Who attacked us, and why? And don't act like you don't know so spill it?!" he stares directly into the man's eyes.
Eduardo sighs, "You're just like your sisters," he says to the boy, "Unfortunately, he is right mí amigos, we were attacked by river pirates. Their leader is called La Sombra and He is... after Miguel and his primas," He says as everyone gasps. Isa and Camilo's jaws drop in shock as Antonio clutches his brother's head in fear.
Luisa yelled, "No!" Then picks up the scared little girls in her arms to keep them safe. As Mirabel picks up a trembling Miguel, "It's okay, we're not going to let him near you," she promises as she gently rocks the shaking boy.
Students chatted nervously, mentioning La Sombra. Gerald was hurt that Luna didn't tell him.
"But you already knew that didn't you, Zano?" Eduardo said making everyone gasp again. "What?!" The white-haired boy pulled Eduardo by his shirt to his eye level. Zano, teeth bared in anger, roared, "Don't even TRY to pin this shit show on me! Unlike you, I warned the others before we were attacked! What's worse is that you made my sister keep this from us when you told her in your cabin. Alone! So, keep away from my sister or else!" He pushes the man away from him as he stands in front of Luna. "Creepy pandejo!"
Eduardo appeared unfazed by the boy's threat, instead, he was amused, "Ha-ha! It wouldn't be an adventure into the jungle without a classic Sánchez threat!"
"I don't make threats I make promises!" Zano argued to Eduardo who was still unfazed, and faced the class.
Sid is curious about this whole river pirate hunt, "Why is this La Sombra after Miguel, Layla, and Gaby?"
"That is the Niños and their family's business! Now let's get going. Vámonos!" he says.
Helga gets in Luna's face, "We didn't sign up for this, Lunatic, but you knew that already. Now we're literally up the river without a stinking paddle!"
Zano moves the rude girl away from his sister. "Hey ease off beeper brat! That shady captain was the first to know and not tell us, so take it up with him!" he barks at her as she glares at him, "What did you call me bat boy?!"
Chico quickly moves between them and diffuses the situation, "Okay kids! Let's all take a step backward and breathe. Olga help your sister take her steps please!" Olga wraps her arm around her sister as she moves her away from the Sánchez'.
Eduardo sees the commotion, "No, no fighting, no fighting! We have one big job to do now: to walk," They all groan, "We can do this and take only what you need."
Curly takes off his shoes and the rest of his clothes as the students march onward. Zano quickly pulls the Madrigals to the side. "Zano, what is it? We need to move?" Chico questions his brother-in-law.
He whispers, "I'll be quick. Whatever you guys do don't leave Eduardo or his crew alone with the kids. I think there's something else he's hiding from us so stay vigilant." He says as the group nods.
Isa: "What about Olga?"
"She's in Cha-Cha land so... nothing I can do for her," Zano says. "Unless you guys have any ideas?"
They all draw a blank and shook their hands. They disperse and quickly move to catch up with the others.
~The trail~
The group now out of their damp nightclothes and into their dry jungle gear, continues onward. Chico and Luisa carry the tired children, along with Isa, Zano, and Camilo. Olga was mostly being carried by Che. Helga pushes Luna into the mud and blows a raspberry at her. Mirabel helps Luna up as she glares at the petty girl. Suddenly Helga's face was flicked by a vine, causing her to land in the mud.
Everyone traverses through the swamp and gets eaten alive by bugs since there is not enough bug spray or plants to keep them at bay. Antonio does befriend a wild boar and the hog offers him and Miguel a lift to the habitat.
The group is now traveling through a rainy part of the jungle, stepping on stones. Luna offers Gerald some help, but he refuses.
At a steep hill, everyone is getting tired, even Chico and Zano except Chavo, who's found himself a parrot, and Curly, who's happily marching forward. While Sid helps Zano lift Harold, as his boots rip apart. "My Beatle boots!" he sobs as Luisa gently places him upon her shoulder with the other exhausted kids keeping the group moving on the trail as Mirabel gives her some water.
Soon the group reaches over a hill Phoebe the first to the top gasps, "I see the habitat!" she alerts the others.
The group of kids, Chico, Sanchez, and Madrigals cheered in relief and excitement as they saw the campsite. Seeing they have reached the children's destination the pig leaves as Antonio waves goodbye. As Mirabel lifts him and says, "We're safe!"
Olga hugs Che and says to his boss, "Thank you, Eduardo!"
"¡Vámonos, Amigos! You can rest, dry out and have a hot meal!" Students gave out excited cheers.
As everyone enters the gates, Che greets his other co-workers. All the kids run inside cheering at the chance to relax in a nice, dry, and safe environment.
Olga smiling and holding Chico's agenda, "We're back on schedule!"
Luna smiles, "Yeah. I guess it all worked out!"
"Um, eh... may I have your attention? There's been a misunderstanding, which I would like to correct." They all looked at him.
"I am not Eduardo," He takes off his fake mustache. "I am La Sombra!" everyone gasps, "And you are now my prisoners!"
The gate closes shut, Luisa and Chico try to break it down but where shot down by tranq. Isa and Zano were striking at the pirates and winning but then Mirabel, Camilo, and Antonio were being held at knifepoint by La Sombra's goons. Forcing the two of them to back down in surrender as they are pushed to the front with the other students. Che drags Miguel, Layla, and Gaby, away from their loved ones and friends to the front of La Sombra.
Luna tries to stop them but was held back, "NO!" As Olga dropped the agenda, Luna was pushed back into her arms, both shaking in fear and worry.
Holding each other in fear for themselves and their family, Miguel becomes pale, Layla trembles, and Gaby glares at the bad man that tricked them.
"And you will remain, my prisoners, until these brats show me where to find the Corazón!"
To be continued...
