Chapter Twenty-Eight
Days have gone by since obtaining the diary from Malphas. Thinking that a good environment would help, Danielle crafted a little luxury house for małe echo. Multiple glyphs were used to construct it as it was done in her room. Wood kept the glass in place, plants lined throughout and also constructed as a bed and a running wheel, a small water glyph on the outside that poured water in through small holes for drinking. All in all, małe echo was comfortable.
"Alright, małe echo," said Danielle, looking at małe echo from her bed. "You're comfy, now please. Cough up some knowledge for me."
"Just squeeze it out!" said King, squeezing one of his toys tight that the head popped off.
"Patience is the game here," said Danielle, picking up the toy's head. "Here, I can fix this later for you okay."
"Hey, knucklehead," said Eda, entering the room. "You're gonna be late for school."
"Be there in a second," said Danielle, placing the toy on her bed.
"Alright. I guess you won't be getting a magic staff with your classmates," said Eda, only to Danielle to rush past her.
"Whoa, Danielle," said Collector, looking at Danielle.
"Dalej, chodźmy!" said Danielle, waiting at the front door, giddy with excitement. "Palizmany, palizmany!"
"Someone's excited," said Collector, looking at Danielle with a smile and a giggle.
"There we go," said Eda, leaving the house and heading towards Hexside.
"Yes, I finally get an adorable palisman," thought Danielle, as her and Eda head towards the grudgby field. "I wonder which will want to be with me?"
"There we go," said Eda, landing on the grudgby field.
"Hi, Willow, Hi, Gus" said Danielle, waving hi to Willow and Gus. "Where's Amity?"
"Oh, sorry, Danielle," said Willow, looking at Danielle. "I heard she stayed home today."
"Probably Odalia not wanting Amity having a hand me down palisman," said Danielle, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Good tidings on this momentous day. You're all about to receive your witches' staffs and, more importantly, meet your palisman," said Principal Bump, looking at the students alongside Eda. "This is a crucial step in your magical development. Palismen are lifelong partners. They can be both your good friends and a powerful tool. In my case..."
"Whoa," thought Danielle, seeing Bump's palisman come off his head revealing really long hair. "Yeah, I think I may a good call naming the little guy impadimp."
"Frewin here, helps me see," said Principal Bump, petting his palisman.
"Now, traditionally, young witches carve their staffs from the branch of an old palistrom tree," said Eda, walking forward.
"But sadly, palistrom trees are becoming more rare," said Principal Bump, looking at the students. "And those that remain are guarded covetously."
"Damn it Caleb," thought Danielle, groaning mentally. "He's ruining these people lives."
"That's why I've teamed up with Bumpy-poo..." said Eda, earning a light giggle from Danielle.
"Never call me that," said Principal Bump, looking at Eda.
"To bring you..." said Eda, as the Bat Queen flies by and perches on a unique nest.
"Palisman adoption day!" said Bat Queen, as the door on the nest opens and many palisman come out.
"So cute," said Danielle, staring at each palisman.
"Thanks for the favor, BQ," said Eda, holding out a whistle. "Here's your whistle back."
"Save it for another time," said Bat Queen, looking at Eda. "This was my pleasure. What a wonderful idea."
"Nope! You're staying right here," said Principal Bump, placing a red cardinal palisman back in the nest.
"Aw, little red," said Danielle, looking at the red cardinal palisman. "Wait, it looks like the one from the story back home."
"These little ones have not had homes in many years," said Bat Queen, looking at the students. "They want to feel a connection. Kneel and state your deepest wish, and your like-minded partner will find you."
"My deepest wish…" thought Danielle, thinking of her mom.
"Ugh," said Boscha, rolling her eyes. "I want my own palisman, not some trashy hand-me-down."
"Your loss!" said Willow, pushing past Boscha and approaching the nest. "I want to be strong and wise to protect everyone I love. And if anyone gets in my way, they'll feel the sting of defeat."
"Tender yet tenacious," said Bat Queen, as a yellow bee palisman flew towards Willow. "Clover gives her support."
"Oh!" said Willow, as Clover transforms into staff form. "Oh, my gosh! I'm gonna take such good care of you."
"Beautiful. Just beautiful," said Gus, staring at Willow's palisman alongside the other students.
"Outta my way!" said Boscha, pushing Willow aside. "I want to play professional grudgby!"
"Bully," said Collector, looking at Boscha.
"A competitive spirit," said Bat Queen, as a red crab skitters towards Boscha. "Maya will be thrilled."
"Okay," said Boscha, blushing. "This is pretty cool."
"Not so bad now, huh," said Danielle, making Boscha blush a little more
"I want to open my own veterinary clinic for mythical pets," said Viney, as a manticore palisman came towards her and transformed into staff form. "All right!"
"It looks like it's sitting on a cloud," said Collector, looking at Viney's palisman.
"I guess it does," said Viney, staring at her palisman.
"Dad wants me to become a master illusionist, but that's easy," said Gus, stepping forward. "So instead, I'll become an ambassador to the Human Realm and re-establish contact with the giraffes!"
"Way to go Gus," said Danielle, lightly scratching under the blue chameleon's chin before it transformed into staff mode before seeing others get their palismans. "Wow."
"Danielle, it's your turn," said Eda, gaining Danielle's attention.
"Right then… my deepest wish is to find my mom and bring her back home so we can be a family again," said Danielle, staring at the palismans only to see none come her way. "Um… why… why are none coming forth?"
"Palismen bond through emotion," said Bat Queen, staring at Danielle. "Something is missing within your wish."
"Wha…but…" said Danielle, as she thought of what was just said. "Well, maybe I want to show dad that this world isn't bad like he thinks. I want him to see the good in this place and show him and mom how much this world has come to help me."
"You okay, Danielle?" asked Eda, seeing as no palisman were coming forth for Danielle.
"I-I-I… don't know," said Danielle, sadly as she looks at the ground. "Maybe humans aren't meant to have palismans."
"Humans can have palismans," said Collector, looking at Danielle before pointing at the red cardinal palisman. "This one right here belonged to one."
"Little red was…" said Danielle, looking at Collector than the red cardinal palisman.
"Yes, he was. He was given by someone who looked like Eda here," said Collector, looking at Danielle.
"So… little red here belonged to Philip Wittebane," said Danielle, looking at the red cardinal palisman.
"Wait, wrong…" said Collector, looking at Danielle.
"Then why is one not coming forth for me?" asked Danielle, gripping the hem of her shirt.
"Well, it's not like our kind can't have staffs," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "Though the way we get ours is…"
"Maybe I can try another time," said Danielle, standing up but not noticing the red cardinal palisman sneak into her bag.
As the day went on, Danielle pondered on which palisman out there would be hers specifically. After leaving Hexside and going to her room in the Owl House, Danielle stares up at the ceiling. Night has downed as Danielle has changed into a different set of pajamas.
"I stayed her to find my mom and to bring her back home. I learned magic and about demons hoping that will help me," said Danielle, talking to herself before seeing the red cardinal palisman come out of her bag. "Oh, it's you little red. Did you sneak out? Might as well take you back."
"Danielle, where you going?" asked Collector, watching Danielle.
"Just taking this little one back," replied Danielle, looking at Collector. "I shouldn't be long, I hope."
"Well…" said Collector, seeing Danielle leave. "Be careful."
Heading back to Hexside and to the grudgby field, Danielle stares at the nest. Walking forward, Danielle sets the red cardinal palisman down.
"Barrier… makes sense," said Danielle, before seeing the red cardinal press up against it and it dissolving. "You're a strong little birdie, aren't you?"
Opening the door to the nest, Danielle sees the red cardinal hop in. Staring at the palisman, Danielle slowly crawls in before laying down near them.
"You know, just looking at all of you remind me of Grampa's cane. I always felt safe and protected whenever I looked and touched Wulfric. Sometimes it felt like I could actually hear his voice," said Danielle, petting each palisman as she talked before feeling the nest justle about. "What the… oh my…"
Seeing that the nest was being lifted by an airship and not wanting whoever was piloting the airship to take the palisman to Belos, Danielle sets off a plant glyph and slowly takes her time climbing up and aboard the airship. Spotting the Golden Guard whistling some unknown tune, Danielle sets off another plant glyph and binds him.
"Oh, the half breed," said the Golden Guard, staring at Danielle.
"Shut up," said Danielle, looking at the controls of the airship. "Now how to fly this thing."
"Oh, you just pull that cord above your head," said the Golden Guard, reaching for his staff and touching it with his finger.
"Thanks, now be quiet," said Danielle, staring back at the Golden Guard only to be bound by rope thrown her way by magic. "Ya little pampered prince!"
"Frankly," said the Golden Guard, teleporting in front of Danielle. "You should be more concerned about yourself. For the crime of binding me on my own ship, you'll be locked in the dingiest cell in the Conformatorium, for the rest of your sad little life."
"I already broken out of there twice," said Danielle, glaring at the Golden Guard.
"Then we'll just zap you to dust and throw you into the sea. That better?" said the Golden Guard, staring at Danielle as she glares back. "Good."
"That staff has got to go," thought Danielle, as she sees scruff marks on deck before drawing the ice glyph and activating it. "Perfect."
"No!" shouted the Golden Guard, seeing his staff struck out of his hand and over the airship. "Half Breed, it'll take more than that to thwart my mission."
"Then I'll gladly…" said Danielle, activating the ice glyph again and severing her binds before standing and seeing a unique dragon land on the airship. "Looks like we got bigger problems."
The unique dragon proceeds to rip the airship's balloon, causing Danielle and the Golden Guard to fall from the sky. Danielle and the Golden Guard both scream as the airship crashes. Utilizing the wind glyph, the closer she got to the ground, Danielle was able to prevent herself and the Golden Guard from sustaining major injuries even though they fell in different areas.
"Ow, blasted dragon," said Danielle, rubbing her arms before seeing the red cardinal perch on her shoulder. "Hey there little red. You and the others, okay?"
Getting a soft chirp as confirmation, Danielle hears Kikimora nearby talking to some Coven Scouts. Turns out, Kikimora wanted the Golden Guard dead, which Danielle wasn't going to let happen as she snuck away to find the Golden Guard unconscious on a pile of gold bubbles as she grabs his staff nearby.
"What the… Caleb?" said Danielle, staring at the Golden Guard's face before lightly slapping his face. "Alright, wake up."
"Wha…" said the Golden Guard, waking up and seeing Danielle. "You!"
"Keep it down or do you want to be dragon food?" asked Danielle, staring at the Golden Guard. "Kikimora is here and obviously wants to end your life which I'm saying right here, I'm too nice to let happen to ya."
"Why should I believe you?" asked the Golden Guard, staring at Danielle. "You also have a weird accent."
"Look," said Danielle, seeing the unique dragon chew up the Golden Guard's cloak nearby as the walk towards the nearby town. "Enough to believe me know. And shut up about my accent. Hey, get back here."
"Scouts!" said the Golden Guard, as he walks to the police precinct in town. "Direct me to your communications room. I need to contact the castle immediately."
"He has a sigil already," thought Danielle, before hearing one of the Coven Scouts mention tattoos. "Highly doubt it."
"I am your superior, and I can prove it!" said the Golden Guard, turning towards Danielle. "Staff!"
"Seriously," said Danielle, holding the staff behind her. "No."
"Isn't it a little late for you kids to be outside?" asked Coven Scout #1, looking at Danielle and the Golden Guard.
"Yeah, go home before we call your parents" said Coven Scout #2, walking away.
"Whoa, hey," said Danielle, being chased by the Golden Guard throughout town. "Calm down Mr. Grumpy."
A cat yowls and hisses at them. The Golden Guard shoves it out of the way, making it fall down. Danielle pushes down a garbage can, and the Golden Guard jumps over it. She leaps over a ledge onto a set of stairs, spilling eyeballs out of one the demon's baskets. Shortly after, the Golden Guard lands on his feet, and continues chasing her. Danielle turns and runs down an alleyway. She stops and quickly begins to draw an ice glyph in the dirt and activates it. The Golden Guard arrives and stares up at Danielle as she looks over the edge of the building she landed on.
"Just try and get me now," said Danielle, as the Golden Guard stares at her. "Can you… not use magic without your staff? Sorry."
The Golden Guard walks away. He then leaps onto different objects to get on top of the building. He then dodges Danielle's energy beam attacks from his staff.
"This is a weird staff," said Danielle, trying to control the staff. "How do you even use it? Back off or…"
"Or else what? Gonna blast me to bits?" said the Golde Guard, walking towards Danielle. "Nah, you're too nice for that. Fly away? Uh-uh, you know you can't do that either. 'Cause then you'll be leaving behind your precious palismen. You don't tend to think things through, do you, half breed?"
"Stop calling me that, and I do think things through" said Danielle, staring at the Golden Guard before seeing the unique dragon fly by and land at the police precinct.
"So Kikimora was after my catch," said the Golden Guard, seeing Kikimora with the nest of palisman.
"Must be trying to rise in rank," said Danielle, looking as well. "Why else would she want to off you. Neither of us wants her to succeed so how bout a temporary truce for now?"
"Then what?" asked the Golden Guard, looking at Danielle. "You think I'll just let you walk away with them?"
"I'm a lot more compatible than you think," said Danielle, glaring at the Golden Guard with glowing eyes.
"Fine," said the Golden Guard, shaking Danielle's hand. "Truce."
Telling the Golden Guard to grab some sleeping nettles nearby, Danielle takes out a marker and starts drawing a glyph combination on a nearby wall. By the time she was done drawing, the Golden Guard returns with the sleeping nettles. Grabbing the sleeping nettles, Danielle places the plant in the hole in the middle of the wall.
"Huh, I've never seen magic like this," said the Golden Guard, staring at the glyph combination. "What will it do?"
"This combo will create a thick mist and with the sleeping nettles here…" said Danielle, only for the Golden Guard to speak.
"A sleep-inducing smoke," said the Golden Guard, looking at the glyph combination. "Oh, um, I-I-I read a similar spell in Bones to Earth…"
"Read it already," said Danielle, looking at the Golden Guard. "I don't want to spook that hand dragon to the point it could hurt the palisman."
"I've never seen glyphs before, but, it seems very similar to the elemental magic practiced in the Savage Ages," said the Golden Guard, looking at Danielle. "Actually, not many people know this, but... No. No, no, no, no. This stuff is restricted for a reason. You should forget about it before you're hurt."
"Restricted or preventing anyone from using it against the Emperor," said Danielle, looking at the Golden Guard. "Why are you even…"
"You were right before. I'm a powerless witch. A lot of my ancestors were. I never thought I'd have a future in a world like this," said the Golden Guard, leaning against the wall. "But then, Belos found me and gave me a staff with artificial magic. He said the Titan had big plans for me."
"Big plans…" said Danielle, before thinking of the Grimwalker spell. "No wonder you look like a younger version. The Bone of Ortet and that spell was to bring back his older brother… but wait… Philip was depicted as a brunet."
"What are you talking about?" asked the Golden Guard, staring at Danielle.
"A story that spans back to the Edwardian Era in my realm," replied Danielle, looking at the Golden Guard. "And one that continues to this day cause of your precious Emperor, pretty boy."
"How is that even…" said the Golden Guard, before the red cardinal palisman hops towards him and pecks at him. "Hey! Stop, get away from me!"
"He's just trying to be nice to ya," said Danielle, seeing that the red cardinal wanted to cheer up the Golden Guard.
"I don't care!" said the Golden Guard, pushing the red cardinal palisman away. "These things are made from wild magic. It's dangerous."
"It's only dangerous if misused by the wrong people," said Danielle, before hearing the hand dragon growl and take off. "Bicker later, let's get going."
Getting the staff in flying position, Danielle extends her hand to the Golden Guard. Accepting the gesture, the Golden Guard climbs on as Danielle activates the glyph combo setting it off towards the hand dragon. With cloths over the mouths, Danielle and the Golden Guard fly behind the hand dragon in pursuit. Activating a light glyph, Danielle uses it to lure the hand dragon close to the ground as it slumbers when it lands. Danielle runs towards the nest and check on the palisman as they land.
"Is everyone alright? Is everyone here?" asked Danielle, seeing every palisman there and unharmed as she still held the staff.
"We got the palisman back," said the Golden Guard, staring at Danielle. "Now hand me my staff."
"Why, so you can attack me? I know what Belos does to these innocent palisman. It's not pretty," said Danielle, staring at the Golden. "Wishful thinking that you were a good person but I guess I was wrong."
"My name is Hunter," said the Golden Guard, looking at Danielle.
"Hunter… as in witch hunter," said Danielle, staring at Hunter. "Caleb really does want to end this beautiful world."
"Caleb…" said Hunter, staring at Danielle with confusion. "Who's that?"
"The one you call Emperor and the human witch hunter from the story back home," replied Danielle, looking at Hunter. "The one you closely resemble."
"Pfft, that can't be," said Hunter, before an energy bolt hits Hunter's forehead.
"I can't tell who's there, but I know I've got you!" said Kikimora, firing more energy beams in a drowsy state.
"Hunter," said Danielle, in a whisper as Hunter attacks Kikimora before picking up the whistle that fell off Kikimora during the exchange.
"This is treason against a Coven official!" shouted Kikimora, as she still attacks Hunter with energy beams. "I will have your head!"
"It's treason for attacking Belos's nephew," said Danielle, using an illusion glyph to alter her voice. "I see a demotion in your future."
"Eep," said Kikimora, not liking what she heard.
"Alright then, Hunter has Kikimora busy. Now to head home," said Danielle, climbing the hand dragon and sitting in the saddle before blowing the whistle as the hand dragon responds. "This realm will never stop surprising and creepy me out. I hope mom's realm isn't as bad."
Grabbing the handle on the nest, the hand dragon flies into the night sky. Looking back down and seeing Hunter, Danielle sets off a healing glyph in cherry blossom petal form before blowing it towards Hunter. The petal lands and heals the wound on Hunter's forehead before he looks at the night sky, a silent thank you in the wind. Seeing the grudgby field in view after a while, Danielle has the hand dragon land before curling up with the palisman and falling asleep. As morning comes, Principal Bump and the Bat Queen check on the palisman.
"Good morning, Bat Queen. The palismen are all accounted for. Although, I don't know where that thing came from..." said Principal Bump, before looking at Danielle. "But I bet something went down as Danielle is here sleeping among them."
"You're right," said the Bat Queen, before seeing the red cardinal palisman hop on her wing. "You found someone after all this time? Go then."
"Edalyn… what are you…" said Principal Bump, seeing Eda fly his way.
"Collector here mentioned that Danielle never returned after bringing back a certain palisman," said Eda, landing and spotting Danielle before waking her up.
"Hmm… Eda… oh my gosh," said Danielle, fully awake.
"It's alright," said Eda, sitting next to Danielle. "Collector was worried."
"Danielle, you okay?" asked Collector, coming out of the tablet.
"I'm fine but… things got even more complicated," replied Danielle, before Eda placed a small log in her lap. "This is…"
"Palistrom wood," said Eda, looking at Danielle.
"Why?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda. "How'd you even find get one?"
"Let's just say that the Bonesborough Garden Club was robbed," replied Eda, nudging Danielle slightly.
"You didn't have to do that," said Danielle, looking at Eda.
"Whenever you know what you want, we'll start carving," said Eda, ruffling Danielle's hair.
"Thanks Eda," said Danielle, leaning into Eda. "But it's kind a hard to envision my future without my mom and dad here. I may need some time to think."
"Eh, there's no rush," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "Just know that whatever you need from us, we gotcha."
"Or you can wait for the one inside you to come out," said Collector, confusing Eda and Danielle. "Our staffs are vastly different. There's a transparent gem that is placed near us upon birth that is absorbed within us and lays in wait till the day it pops out. I don't know the whole specifics but that how it goes with us. Though I don't really know if Lady Asteria did it with you being half human and all."
"Well, that's interesting," said Eda, looking at Collector than Danielle. "Looks like you'll have two staffs then."
"Yeah," said Danielle, rubbing the palistrom wood. "I hope they get along."
