Chapter Twenty-Nine
In a couple of days, the annual Gland Prix was coming. King was ecstatic as he was going to use this chance as a way to send out a message to his people. Collector on the other hand, was apprehensive as he knew what actually happened to the Titans. Danielle was helping King prepare, and was doing pushups alongside him while Owlbert held them in place in midair.
"Phew, that's enough pushups," said Danielle, getting into a sitting position. "Time for a break King. Know what you're gonna do when you meet your people?"
"And ten thousand! Well, once we're done training, I'm gonna move out of that closet, that's for sure," replied King, looking at Danielle. "Then, I'm going to ugly cry. Hard!"
"Decided when you're going to tell Eda…" said Danielle, looking at King.
"Shh!" said King, before hearing a window close. "I-I'm not ready yet. I'm not sure how she'll react."
"Well, I'll be there to support ya, you know that," said Danielle, before situating herself in a better flying position. "Now, how bout a little flight lesson again? Ready?"
"Yes," replied King, as they ascended and flew around the property.
"This isn't good. The Titans are all gone," thought Collector, seeing Danielle speed up and doing aerial techniques. "King, you're the last one."
"Danielle, I-I'm not feeling so good," said King, feeling his breakfast coming up.
"Hold on, King. I'll land," said Danielle, descending down only for King to not be able to hold it. "Wait… King, hold on! Aah!"
"Ew," said Collector, as he sees King jump off the owl staff and hurling in a nearby bush.
"I'm sorry King. Let's take a break," said Danielle, rubbing King's back before picking him up and heading inside the house and seeing Eda watching the news.
"How are you supposed to be Head Bard with stage fright?" said Eda, mockingly.
"New Coven Head?" asked Danielle, walking over.
"Yup," replied Eda, looking at Danielle. "Your flying is getting even better out there."
"All those lessons you've given me is paying off for when I carve my palisman," said Danielle, sitting down next to Eda.
"Have you given up on returning to the Human Realm?" asked Eda, looking away. "I mean, I suppose you can stay here a little longer."
"Just cause there are some setbacks doesn't mean nothing," replied Danielle, petting King. "I'm going to return home with my mom."
"In the meantime, this weekend is the Gland Prix!" said King, excited. "Fame! Winners also get an interview with the Boiling Isles news! Do you realize what this means?"
"We're entering so King can get a word out to the other Titans that are still around," said Danielle, looking at Eda.
"Oh, that's... great," said Eda, unsure.
"But, uh... there's something I'd like to talk to you about first," said King, nervously. "You see, I think it's time for me to le…"
"Leave... the talkin' for later. If you want to win, there's no time for talk," said Eda, nervous as well. "You gotta go practice. Now."
"Actually, we're on break right now," said Danielle, standing up before looking at King. "Want to start writing your speech to your kin?"
"Yes," replied King, walking after Danielle upstairs.
"How do I tell King that his people are gone?" thought Collector, peering from the tablet. "What will he say when he finds out it was my people that made his disappear? I don't want to think about it."
The remainder of the day was preparing for the Gland Prix. Eda however went to a tavern and eventually met up with an old flame out in the town square. As the new day dawns, King is doing more exercises with Hooty's aid.
"The Gland Prix is the day after tomorrow," said Danielle, looking at King. "You going to be ready for this?"
"I, uh, got the jitters," replied King, squealing. "And I still haven't been able to talk to Eda."
"She has been awfully busy," said Danielle, looking at the house. "I wonder if something's bothering her. She hasn't really been herself. Could she be thinking we're going to leave… empty nest syndrome… oh, Eda doesn't want to let us go."
"You think that's what she's going through?" aske King, looking at Danielle. "Well, she's in for a surprise when we win the Gland Prix."
"You're right," said Danielle, before seeing Eda leave. "Hey Eda, still going to be there at the Grand Prix."
"I'll be there. I promise!" said Eda, as she leaves.
"I'll be there too," said Hooty, pushing his face into Danielle's face.
"As long as I don't have to see you detach yourself from the house again, sure," said Danielle, pushing Hooty's face away.
"Um, Danielle, about the Titans," said Collector, gaining Danielle's attention.
"What about the Titans?" asked Danielle, looking at Collector.
"Nevermind, I-I-I'll tell you later," replied Collector, going back in the tablet.
"What's up with Collector?" asked King, looking at Danielle. "He's usually so upbeat."
"I don't know," replied Danielle, lightly rubbing near the tablet. "I do know something is bothering him as well."
As night descends, Eda has not returned to the house. Eda was helping her old flame with their little rebellion against Belos. The day of the Gland Prix is finally here. Heading to where the Gland Prix was being hosted at, Danielle sees the other competitors.
"Eda! I'm so glad you made it!" said Danielle, spotting Eda and running over with King.
"I, uh, would really like to tell you something before the race starts," said King, nervously.
"Well, if it's so important, we can talk about it after the race..." said Eda, bending down and smiling at King. "When you win, okay?"
"Uh, yeah, yeah," said King, slightly smiling. "Okay."
"Welcome, everyone, to the Gland Prix!" said Gus's Dad, emceeing the event. "Contestants will fly down the right arm to the Cubital Valley. They use speed, cunning, and magic, to race to the checkpoint and back to the finish line! Winners get their names etched on the Cup of Ephemeral Glory!"
"King can keep the trophy," said Danielle, looking at the trophy with disgust as she got into position.
"And, an on-camera interview, seen by everyone watching across the Isles! On your marks, get set…" said Gus's Dad, seeing the contestants ready to fly as the trophy screams as the signal.
"This is going to be a piece of cake," said Danielle, flying through the course. "Eda brought us here a few times to practice."
"We are so going to win this," said King, holding on tight.
"If King is going to tell Eda about this adoption thing at the end of the race," thought Collector, looking at King. "Then I should too with telling him about his kind."
Flying through Cubital Valley, Danielle had to do some aerial technique like barrel rolls to dodge any spells tossed her way. Turns out some of the competition didn't want a witch hunter competing. Though one contestant, a proud flyer, wasn't someone who liked seeing underhanded tricks and utilized some of her own spells in defense of Danielle.
"Thanks," said Danielle, looking at the Female Flying Contestant.
"I'm not going to let some jerks mess up the race," said the Female Flying Contestant, looking at Danielle. "Name's Ukla. You're a pretty good flyer."
"Nice to mee'cha, name's Danielle," said Danielle, slightly scratching her cheek. "And thanks… for the compliment that is. I thought you would have…"
"Pfft, I'm not bias against humans," said Ukla, gripping her staff. "Now let's show them how we really fly."
"Okay," said Danielle, with a grin and a smile on her face.
"Danielle, the turn, the turn!" said King, seeing Danielle take the turn masterfully into the goal ring.
"Do you hear music?" asked Collector, hearing Eda's cittern nearby.
"I do. Is that…" said Danielle, spotting Eda in the woods below. "King, it's your call here. What do you…"
"Save my mom of course," said King, descending towards the woods as Danielle conjures a light longsword to severe the abomination goo holding Eda and her old flame. "Let them go!"
"Are you okay?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda. "Who is…"
"R to the A to the E-E-Da! What does that spell? Raeda!"
"Pfft," said Danielle, containing her laughter.
"Dare I ask?" asked Eda, looking at Danielle.
"R to the A to the E-E-Da, what does that spell?" said Danielle, keeping her laughter at bay. "Raeda! Hahahahaha."
"Ohoohoo, Danny is in so much trouble," said Eda, blushing up a storm.
"I always wondered what your power couple name would be," said the Male Witch, that had tried to capture Eda and her old flame as he walks forward. "That actually works nicely."
"You're the Head of the Abomination Coven, Darius Deamonne," said Danielle, staring at Darius and another Coven Head. "And Coven Head Eberwolf… eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"
"Whoa, Danielle," said Eda, as she and the others cover their ears. "Too loud."
"Ach jak słodko!" squealed Danielle, running over and picking up Eberwolf in a cuddle. "Tak, jesteś! Tak, jesteś! Kto jest trzecią najsłodszą rzeczą, odkąd tu jestem?"
"Hello, Daruis, Eber," said Eda's Old Flame, glaring at Darius and Eberwolf. "Eda, is there any way you can control your kid there?"
"Kid?" thought Danielle, as Eberwolf struggled in her hold. "I was right days ago, Eda has grown attached to us and doesn't want us to really leave."
"She's a good kid," replied Eda, looking at her old flame then Darius and Eberwolf. "You two on the other hand…"
"They're on our side, they're on our side!"
"Our side… on our side," said Danielle, gasping in excitement. "Eda, they want to stop Belos."
"What?!" said Eda, staring at Danielle.
"Where'd you get such a thought?" asked Darius, seeing Danielle let Eberwolf go.
"Think of it along the oracle's mind," replied Danielle, looking at Darius. "I heard it."
"Great, someone that knows," said Darius, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Keep this information to yourselves."
"Well, that's three Coven Heads on our side," said Eda, before gesturing to her old flame. "Danielle, meet Raine Whispers… also never bring up Raeda again."
"But they're the perfect couple, just like Lumity and Huntlow."
"Well, if we're going to be working together," said Darius, looking at Raine. "Pretend to go along with the capture."
"Raine," said Eda, looking at Raine.
"If it means we can learn more about this spell Belos has for the Day of Unity," said Raine, stepping forth. "Then I'll go along with this capture. Later Eda."
"Eda, you going to be, okay?" asked Danielle, staring at Eda as Raine, Darius and Eberwolf leave.
"Yes," replied Eda, looking at Danielle and King. "Now, you going to win this Gland Prix or not."
"On it," said King, hopping onto the owl staff alongside Danielle as they continue the race.
"Alright, back to the stands," said Eda, running back to the stands and watching the rest of the race.
"Danielle of Hexside and Ukla of Glandus are barreling towards the finish line! And there you have it! Ukla over Danielle!" said Gus's Dad, seeing Danielle and Ukla finish the race. "For fifth place. And now, let's give a hearty applause to our actual winner!"
"Just goes to show ya, I need to practice more," said Danielle, flying over to Eda. "Hey, Eda."
"You were flying like the dang wind," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "What happened?"
"Yeah, King's tummy could only handle so much," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "Plus, the other competitors have more experience flying, I'm still pretty much a newbie."
"No, you're not," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "With all those maneuvers, you look like a master flyer."
"It's okay," said King, grabbing his paper. "I'll just throw my message into the garbage where it belongs."
"No, this isn't over," said Eda, summoning her Penstagram and starting a recording.
"Eda, who's even gonna watch this?" asked King, as Eda got him in shot of the recording.
"No one watches crystal balls anymore," replied Eda, looking at King. "It's all about streaming."
"What I miss… aah!"
"All right. Hi, members of my race. If you're out there watching this, I uh, want to introduce myself," said King, holding his paper. "I like cheesy foods and conquering kingdoms. Though I haven't conquered any of my own yet."
"Stop him, stop him!"
"Why would I do that?" asked Danielle, angry at Danny.
"But maybe you have, and we can compare notes. I'd love to meet you. We could do stuff that our kind does, toss a ball, burn some cookies, catch me going on weird websites or something," said King, still reading his speech. "I live with my favorite human, a cranky old witch and my favorite star child."
"Hey," said Eda, glaring at King.
"I'm his favorite star child," said Collector, looking at King.
"Please, you got to stop him. It won't…"
"Shut up," said Danielle, getting angrier at Danny.
"But cranky or not, she's the one who raised me, which is why I am le..." said King, grabbing a stack of adoption papers. "...gally changing my name to King Clawthorne! Surprise, Eda! Now we're connected for life, and there's nothing you can do about it!"
"Is that what you wanted to tell me this whole time?" asked Eda, sniffly as she grabs the adoption papers.
"And, if you sign here, it be official," replied King, grabbing a pen.
"Eda, you're going to make me cry as well," said Danielle, seeing Eda openly cry as she feels some tears build up.
"Turn the recording off, please," said Collector, staring at Eda as she turns it off. "King, I have something to say."
"What is it?" asked King, looking at Collector.
"I've tried saying many times but kept getting interrupted," said Collector, looking at King. "You're actually the last Titan. There's no others out there."
"Wha-What are you talking about?" asked King, looking at Collector.
"My kind made your kind disappear a long time ago," replied Collector, reciting something of his kind. "Collectors live long, we watch things pass. To preserve, to observe, we must amass... What flies, what swims, be it predator or prey, seal them up so that they never fade… But should they meddle in our affairs, we'll clean the planet and scorch the air."
"Wait, are you saying your kind eradicated the Titans?" asked Eda, shocked.
"Not eradicated, disappear," replied Collector, looking at Eda. "I don't know what my siblings did with the Titans."
"You don't know what death means to us, do you?" asked Eda, looking Collector in the eye.
"Huh?" said Collector, confused.
"So that means I'm all alone," said King, getting teary eyed. "That recording was all for naught. Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I-I-I was…" replied Collector, looking at King. "I don't know how to describe it. I didn't want to lose you as a friend."
"You were scared, that's what you were feeling, weren't you?" asked Danielle, looking at Collector.
"I don't know, maybe," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "I don't know every feeling out there. It felt completely… no, I remember feeling it when King's dad sealed me away."
"So, in extension since I'm half celestial," thought Danielle, curling in on herself. "I'm very much apart…"
"Danielle, you, okay?" asked Eda, looking at Danielle.
"King, I'm so sorry for what mine and Collector's race has done to your people," said Danielle, looking at King. "I'd understand if you don't want me as a big sister any more but please don't hate me or Collector."
"I don't think I even could," said King, looking at Danielle. "Why would you think that?"
"Because I'm half celestial," replied Danielle, looking at King. "I'm…"
"Were not part of it," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "It happened hundreds of years ago before you were even born. You're not a part of it."
"But I was," said Collector, looking at the ground. "But my siblings told me to play with the baby Titans, then they all started disappearing till only King's dad was left. Then he sealed me away, like I was the bad guy."
"Sounds like your siblings used you right there as a distraction," said Eda, looking at Collector. "And as a scapegoat. Sounds like all you wanted to do was play."
"Exactly," said Collector, looking at Eda. "I just wanted to play with the baby Titans. They're just so cute."
"Now what?" asked King, looking at everyone. "How am I supposed to learn how to be a Titan? Or know anything about them?"
"Well, you could continue being just you," replied Eda, looking at King. "Nothing wrong with who you are."
"I guess you're right," said King, looking at the ground.
"Bigger problem, that recording went straight to another enemy that helped kill off the Titans… the Titan Trappers."
"Oh, my goodness," said Danielle, as everyone stared at her. "We got a problem, it wasn't just celestials that dealt with the Titans but also Titan Trappers. We just broadcasted to them about King."
"What?!" shouted Eda and King, shocked.
"They wear the pelts and skulls of the ones they've slain."
"King, if you see someone dressed like you, get away from them," said Danielle, looking at King. "They're wearing your kin's skin and skull."
"A wolf in sheep's clothing," said Eda, before pulling King into a hug. "Well, I won't let them. King's my son, I'd fight to the death to protect him."
"Is this…" thought Danielle, thinking of her dad. "How dad feels? Wanting to protect me all the time? Dad… I think… I'm understanding you a bit more."

"Hey, Danielle," said Collector, looking at Danielle.
"What is it?" asked Danielle, sitting on her bed.
"Could you touch the tablet?" asked Collector, looking at Danielle. "I don't know if this would work but… I really want a hug."
"Okay," said Danielle, touching the tablet, grinning through the pain as she slowly let some of her being turn shadow before pulling Collector into a hug. "How's that? Feel it?"
"Yes, for some odd reason, yes I can feel it," replied Collector, cuddling into Danielle. "Thank you."

"What the…" said Danielle, grabbing an empty nail polish from her bag. "Who used all my nail polish?"
"Hey, Danielle," said King, posing at the door to her room. "What do you think? This stuff has some power. It looks like blood is on my claws."
"My nail polish," said Danielle, slumping to the floor as she sees the red nail polish on King's claw.
"Cool," said Collector, seeing King's claws before looking at Danielle. "Can you do my nails when I'm out?"
"Sure," replied Danielle, looking at Collector. "But it will have to wait till I get home. I only had this one."
"Okay," said Collector, smiling.
