In the snug warmth of Judy's modest apartment at Grand Pangolin Arms, a kaleidoscope of festive colors painted the walls. Strings of twinkling lights adorned the narrow space, casting a soft, golden glow that danced with the flickering flames of cinnamon-scented candles strategically placed around the room. The aroma of fresh pine mingled with the spicy sweetness, creating a symphony of scents that embraced the holiday spirit.
Judy, with a spirited smile, moved gracefully around the room, her nimble fingers delicately placing ornaments on the petite Christmas tree that stood proudly in a corner. The tree, though small, sparkled with an abundance of decorations.
Meanwhile, Nick, his sly grin softened by the warm ambiance, leaned casually against the wall, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he held a string of twinkling lights. The lights, carefully draped along the small window frames and around the modest bookshelf in the corner of her space, added a whimsical touch to the room, transforming it into a magical haven despite its shoebox dimensions.
"Carrots," Nick said, "if I'd known you were such a fan of decorating, I would've brought my own tree over so you could help me with it."
Judy chuckled as she smiled back at him, eyes twinkling as brightly as the strands of Christmas lights. "Well, you never asked, Slick," she answered. "Now, hold this steady while I add the star."
"You've got quite the knack for turning a space like this into a Christmas wonderland, if I do say so myself."
"Well, I've got a lot of experience under my belt with decorating the burrow back home. And I figured if I'm stuck working over the holidays, I might as well make my little corner of Zootopia merry."
Just as they admired their handiwork, a sudden crash echoed through the paper-thin walls, coming directly from the neighboring apartment. Judy's ears began to perk up and Nick exchanged a puzzled glance back at her.
"What in the world was that?" the vulpine inquired taken aback.
The rabbit sighed as if she already knew what was the source of it and had been anticipating something like what they heard prior. "It's the Antlersons," she said informatively. "I saw them earlier; they were bringing back a real tree for their decorations."
Nick raised an eyebrow with a sly smile, "A real tree, huh? From my experience, those can get make a bit of a mess sometimes.
"Oh, I know what you mean," replied Judy, "and the one that they had wasn't a very good one either. Didn't look like it was going to last too long to begin with."
Knowing quite well how Judy's next-door neighbors had a tendency to be loud, as they had made known in the past, Nick had a feeling that something was about to unfold after that big crash sound came from their place.
Meanwhile...
The last thing he expected to have to deal with was a disastrous Christmas tree, but that ended up being exactly what came his way.
The branches of it looked like they had given out under the weight of what decorations had been hung on them. Glass bulb ornaments that once filled the tree laid scattered across the wooden floor after falling from the branches, a couple of them shattered into fragments that were beyond being restored. Not only that, but it also seemed that the star had also taken a fall onto the ground as well, but luckily it was nothing that couldn't be fixed.
Bucky leaned down and picked up a broken ornament that used to be shimmery red, picking the rest of the stray pieces up and cupping them in his hoof. He sighed heavily before turning over toward gemsbok behind him. "I told you from the beginning that this tree would be a problem," he rambled, "but, no, you went ahead and insisted to get it anyway."
"How was I supposed to know this was gonna happen?" returned Pronk, who took a few steps forward and started to clean the mess that the fallen tree had made.
"I told you that real trees aren't like the movies. First the needles fall off everywhere and now this happens." Bucky grunted under his breath before shaking his head. "Just help me get all this picked up, please."
"I'm on it..."
The two stepped over to the other side of the apartment to continue picking things up. It was just then as Bucky looked around the corner that he started to see a trail of sparkly material across the ground by the molding, which confused him considering that he was fairly certain they didn't put anything glittery out or get any cards with it on them.
The way it always had that tendency to show up unexpectedly was one of the reasons he was not a fan of it in any manner, and this was enough to draw a long sigh out of him.
"And why is there glitter all over the rug, Pronk?"
"I don't know, Bucky!"
Author's Note: Hey there, readers! I finally got to writing the first of my annual Christmas stories set in Zootopia! :D
I know this one is kinda short with not much happening in it, but I hope that y'all enjoy it. While I do have some holiday tales that I'm still working on to make them a bit longer than this, I also have a couple more that are around this length that I have planned with some of them including some other familiar faces.
'Til next time, everybody! :)
