Hello everyone. This is one of my alternate chapters for how the ending would go if Neteyam was brought back to life. The next one will come next week. Hope you enjoy it.
Alternate Ending Part One:
After their warm embrace, the family sailed on Payaka back to the rock shores where Tsireya and Atuiko awaited them. Kiri and Tuk were heartbroken. Tears rained from their eyes the moment they saw dried blood on his chest. The twins scrunched their eyes seeing his body again. Tsu'tey purred and Jake watched them wrap their arms around his neck. He sighed and hanging his head down. The Taquamare saw his grief and purred sorrowfully.
Tsireya and Atuiko, relieved as they were that the Sullys were safe helped them onto the rock shore. The moment she did, Neytiri fell to her knees again and cradled his body. Tuk fell into Kiri's arms, both crying and grieving. The twins embraced their friends, crying softly. "It's okay," Tsireya soothed, rubbing Sylwa's back.
"You're safe," Atuiko breathed as Lo'ak soothed his shoulders. "We're all safe,". He looked up at Lo'ak's tearful face and realised what he had just said; he felt deeply regretful. "I'm sorry,"
"It's okay. Your father and brother are safe," Lo'ak assured him. "They're all safe,"
"You saved my mother," Tsireya spoke to him. On the battlefield on the water, she had seen from a distance how he and Tsu'tey had saved Ronal alongside Soxato. 'You both saved all those people out there,". She smiled proudly at the pair and Lo'ak received an even tighter hug from Atu. Jake absorbed everything she said; he couldn't be more prouder.
Lo'ak however felt no deserving of such gratitude. He glimpsed again at his mother embracing Neteyam's body but then something strange flashed in his mind. He glanced at his spiritual brother; the mental link between them watched by their audience. They knelt beside Neteyam. "Lay him down," he told his mother.
She shook her head. "I cannot,"
Jake saw a strange change in him. "Do it babe,". Faith was all that was on his mind.
Still crying, Neytiri gently laid Neteyam down and stood up before lifting Tuk into her arms.
Sylwa with Tsireya holding her shoulders watched her twin hold up his queue; its tendrils touched Neteyam's fatal wound. Tsu'tey sat beside him and did the same thing with his special queue. Then with his marred hand and his spiritual brother's front webbed paws pressed over the other, they closed their eyes and the Sullys saw a strange glow pulsing through their bodies, flowing into Neteyam's body. His wound seemed to illuminated.
"Ahh!" Lo'ak screamed in agony. The stress it was waning on his body was too much.
The family became scared. "Stop!" Neytiri ordered. "You cannot give anymore!"
But Lo'ak would not stop. He couldn't give up. "Lo'ak! You must stop it!" Jake begged. He would not see him waste his life like this. He tried to grab him but Tsu'tey neighed at him, forcing him back with his head. He tried again but he was forced back again.
"You're killing our son!" Neytiri accused.
Tsu'tey neighed at her when she tried to grab him. "Don't touch him," Sylwa translated; she did her best to sound serious.
He mastered his pain. "I can do this!"
But the pain he crying out was too much for them to bear; they couldn't let him kill himself like this. Scared as he was for him, Atuiko trusted the Taquamare. "Do as Tsu'tey says,". Reluctantly the Sullys allowed Lo'ak to continue the process. Moments later, the glow receded and Lo'ak felt his hand and forearm burning mad as he fell back right into Jake's arms. Tsu'tey licked his burning palm and forearm.
Sylwa fell to Neteyam's other side watching her brother as Jake held him gently. "I'm okay," he tried to sound reassuring. He managed to lean against Tsu'tey to kneel straight again. His wet eyes observed Neteyam's lifeless face and so did his twin's. Nothing happened. But then…a once unresponsive chest rose up and down and breathing filled the air. Mouths dropped open and tears of joy rained. Sylwa and Lo'ak's lips formed a joyful smile. Tsu'tey roared into the air. Neteyam's eyes opened and above his face he saw his brother and sister. He sat up slowly. "Am I not…dead?"
Sylwa threw her arms around him and embraced him tightly, sobbing, pouring all her love into him. Lo'ak did too but very slowly for he was so weak. Full of life again, he embraced them tightly. Then Tuk joined in. And Kiri. And the parents in one big giant family bear hug. Atu and Tsireya cried at the sight. Tsu'tey and Payaka purred at one another.
They stayed that way, afraid that if they let go they would never feel this way ever again. "Okay. Can't breathe," wheezed the resurrected boy stuck in the centre. "I don't understand," he held his chest. "How am I…" Had Eywa brought him back?
"Thank you Great Mother," Neytiri and Kiri prayed. "Thank you,".
Sylwa and Neytiri helped him up whilst Jake kept a firm hold on Lo'ak with Atuiko acting as a side support. Neteyam saw their eyes of wet joy, of love.
"Neteyam, I am so, so sorry for everything I said," the girl twin cried. "You were just trying to keep us safe and I…"
"No. I'm sorry," Neteyam held her cheeks. "I should have been a better brother. And you were right before. I was a coward. You two may be reckless…" the twins couldn't argue on that. "…but you're the bravest people I have ever known," he pulled them into a big hug, mending their bond at last. Tuk jumped into his arms and he spun her around, everyone else laughing.
Lo'ak managed to pat his back before Neteyam was pulled into his arms too. "Forgive me," he begged, remembering everything that had happened between them.
"No," the big brother implored. "Forgive me. You brought me back," he clutched his upper arms.
Lo'ak nearly lost balance but his father and brother caught him and helped him stand up straight again. "Not just me," he coked his head to behind them.
Neteyam twisted his head and met Tsu'tey kind eyes that showed now hard feelings for their previous tension before on the ship. "I guess you're not so bad after all," he shrugged. "I was wrong to call you 'brother-stealer'. You're not a daemon. You're a protector,"
Thanks. And it's okay. Tsu'tey neighed.
"He forgives you," his brother translated.
Tsu'tey painted Neteyam's face with his tongue and he groaned playfully making his brother and sisters laugh at him. Even their parents and friends sniggered so much. "Oh, ha ha,". He wiped his face.
"How did you do that?" Kiri asked Lo'ak. He was speechless. He didn't know what to say. He watched his father coil his arm around his shoulder. "You were given your gift for a reason. And you used it to save our family,"
"You truly have been blessed," Neytiri was proud of him too. Heads were turned to the sound of splashing and they saw Spider crawling out of the sea, Atuiko helping him up. Sylwa glanced at Neytiri tensely. She made a mental note to keep a firm eye on her but all she could think of was that he was back with them. "You're okay," she rushed to him to give him a quick hug.
"It's good to have you back Spider," Lo'ak said relieved. He tried to walk but Jake shook his head, not wanting him to strain his body anymore. "This is Atuiko and Tsireya," He introduced their friends.
"Hello," Tsireya greeted.
"The twins have told us so much about you," Atu greeted. "And I have to say you're just as sweet as they say,"
Spider played stroked his hair. "I like this kid," he stared at Neteyam, bewildered and pale. "How did you…"
"Lo'ak brought me back," Neteyam patted his brother's back earning a loving smile. "And Tsu'tey of course," he remembered. He gave the Taquamare a scratch under the chin making him purr and the others laugh. Spider was breathless.
Lo'ak looked at his palm, scorched further into his skin. "Oh Lo'ak," Kiri cradled it as he winced. Neteyam bit his lip.
Jake gently sat him down and Atuiko and Neteyam fell to his side too. The father undid one of his wrist strap bands and gently tied it around his youngest son's hand like a bandage. "Is that better?"
Lo'ak gently moved his fingers and hand muscles. "It still stings a bit,"
"Can you stand?" Atu asked.
"I'm not sure. My body feels so weak too,"
Spider cringed. "That's gonna leave a permanent mark,". Neytiri gently snarled at him and he backed down. Sylwa glared at her mother. Her mother saw she clearly hadn't forgotten how she threatened his life as Quaritch held Kiri hostage; they were going to have a talk about this later.
"How did you do it?" Tuk asked.
Lo'ak was lost for words for the repeated question. But the more he thought about what happened under the surface, the more he felt a clear picture flashing in his mind. "Plugging into those gems somehow gave me the energy Tsu'tey and I needed to bring Neteyam back. I know this goes against the balance of Eywa but I sensed something in those crystals. I don't know how to explain it but I know it all means something,"
"Whatever kind of power this is that you have, no one can know of it," Spider said seriously as he knelt before him. "If the RDA knew…" he didn't even think of finishing that sentence lest he received another cold glare from the woman who threatened his life. It was at that moment that the Sullys realised at once the jeopardy Lo'ak new power and connection with Tsu'tey had put his life in.
"We'll protect you bro," Neteyam promised swinging an arm around Lo'ak's shoulders; Sylwa who nodded in agreement. He looked at Tsu'tey. "All of us,". Tsu'tey was touched; the short-lived rivalry between them was over. And it warmed Lo'ak's heart that none of his brothers feared him loving one more than the other. When he thought of that, it made him remember a certain accusation he had lashed at with Jake.
"Let us return home," their overjoyed father said. He realised a little distress in the twins' eyes. "All of us," he eyed Tsu'tey and Payaka who was still in the water. He looked again at the twins. "It's time you both told the chief what creatures they really are,". They sent him loving smiles and Tsu'tey purred wagging his tail like a big pussy cat. Tuk stroked his face and he purred into her chest. "Pretty horsey," she cooed.
Lo'ak chuckled weakly remembering that name he once called him.
Soxato sat up weakly with Roxto and Aonung's assistance. "Father…" his son breathed.
"Take it easy," Aonung soothed.
The general felt his abdomen stinging but he saw white material tied around it. "How…" all he could remember was sinking underwater.
"Lo'ak saved you," Roxto told him. "He saved you,".
His father couldn't believe it. The boy whom he had despised since the first moment he met him had saved his life. "Where is your brother?" Roxto couldn't answer. He became scared. "Where is your brother?" he begged for an answer.
"Look!" cried a soldier.
Everyone's heads twisted and they saw the Sullys sailing towards them on Payaka with their friends. "Don't be afraid!" Aonung calmed them. When they looked out again, they saw Tsu'tey rising from the surface and the little calf. Ronal recognised him at once.
"Tsireya!" Tonowari cried out to her. Once Payaka was close enough, Tsireya jumped onto the shore and into her family's' arms. Then Atu dismounted and saw his father looking out to him with love.
"Father…" he fell to his knees and hugged him. Soxato embraced both his sons, overjoyed that they were all together. Over his heads, he watched Neteyam and Jake assisting Lo'ak off Payaka onto the shore, the father keeping a firm hold on him. With Tonowari's help, he slowly stood up and looked at Lo'ak weary face with gratitude.
"You saved my life," he acknowledged. "Thank you,"
"Not just his life," Ronal stared at him, holding her belly bump. "You saved all of us,"
"The credit doesn't belong to me alone," Lo'ak twisted his head and saw Tsu'tey's head still bobbing. Come out. He spoke to him telepathically.
Tsu'tey wouldn't come out. Neteyam turned around, seeing his anxiety. "Don't worry. It's alright,". The Taquamare saw the generosity in his eyes that stemmed from the gratitude he owed for helping Lo'ak bring him back to life. The Taquamare walked out the water slowly but as he did, warriors held their spears at him all of a sudden. He became scared.
Calm down! Jake shouted to them at them in Navi. "He's not our enemy! He never was!"
"Don't hurt him!" Neteyam raised his hands at them. "He's with us! He helped Lo'ak bring me back!" The warriors weren't convinced. "Look!" he pointed to a large scar on his chest, the one the bullet had donned to his body. "I was shot! Dead! But he saved me! My brother was telling the truth the whole time! They're not dangerous! Without them we wouldn't have won this fight!"
Tonowari could not relinquish his hatred. "Father…this must end," Tsireya declared to him, her brother supporting her. "Look at our people. All the warriors they saved,"
"And see again what's behind us," Aonung gestured to Neteyam, resurrected as shown by his mortal wound that had killed him before.
"Tsu'tey and Payaka helped us win this fight!" Neteyam repeated again. "And without them, we wouldn't be standing here right now!"
"We all owe them our lives!" Jake declared. "And if my twins see them so do I," his words touched their hearts.
"Chief, Tsahik, I know what it is you're afraid of," Lo'ak left his father's arms. "And it's not Tsu'tey. It's not Payaka. It's not daemon-blood," he showed his hand again. "It's…losing your loved ones and your people,". Something seemed to stir in the couples' eyes. "I know what it feels like to lose loved ones…" after witnessing his brother die before his eyes and feeling his spiritual brother's pain, Lo'ak felt a pain far greater than anything anyone could bear. "And…I'm sorry you both lost your son and Tsireya," he approached them softly. " But I'm telling you…just because our spiritual siblings are different, it doesn't mean they're dangerous,"
Sylwa walked to stand beside him as well. "It doesn't mean that they deserve to be treated like something that would hurt you, something that would do awful things when they never asked to be born as they are…" as she spoke, the general remembered how he had slapped her face not too long ago; he was ashamed for you. "Someone different can be your best friend or someone you can always count on to protect you," she glanced over her head at her spiritual sister in the water. "They've done nothing to deserve hatred. Payaka saved your spirit sister's calf, Ronal," she acknowledged the Tsahik. "She broke the rules because it was better to save his life than leave him to die. The Tulkun Way doesn't protect your Tulkun people from the Sky People. All it does is sentence them to death and you cannot threaten them with exile if you can't allow them to defend themselves," Tsireya stood beside her, supporting her completely much to the shock of her parents. Aonung joined in too.
"And Tsu'tey never asked to be born as he was," Lo'ak spoke firmly to Tonowari as Tsu'tey came behind him and he held his snout, stroking it affectionately. Him beside him made his spiritual brother less scared. He didn't want to have fight again like before, let alone accidentally hurt someone again. "Whatever it is your sister saw in these creatures I see it in them too. He is kind and loyal and he wouldn't hesitate to put his life on the line for me and my family as he has just done,"
The chief and his wife remained speechless. "Listen to them," the general spoke up much to their surprise. "They speak the truth. And perhaps their bond with this Taquamare and Tulkun is a sign we must change our beliefs and ways as well,"
"We all do," Neteyam declared coming to stand between them.
Then Jake joined them too, moved by their speech. He would support them no matter what.
Tonowari took a moment to consider all their words. Then he glanced again at the twins whose spiritual siblings they stood in front of their with their friends and siblings to protect at all costs. He raised his hand. The spears were lowered. "Today begins a start of change. We owe our lives to Sezu Penu Zu. He will be the bridge between our people and these creatures just as my sister had sought to be before," the title made Lo'ak's insides tingle; he felt a little pale. Jake however expressed how proud he was with his encouraging eyes. "And you…" he pointed his spear at Sylwa. "You will be a teacher of wisdom among our people. Your spiritual sibling will be welcomed to our shores once again,"
"And what of the calf?" Ronal asked. She clearly wasn't comfortable with Payaka raising Roa's son.
Tonowari glimpsed again at Payaka in the water. She felt scared. Roa's baby swam close to her, comforting her. "It would be too late. He has already formed an attachment to her. The baby is now hers," Sylwa and Tsireya were brought to tears. The calf jumped to and fro for joy nuzzling against his new mother. "Let us return to our shores to heal,"
What did you all think? Can't wait to share the next one next week. I hope you all love it. In the case of the alternate story, I don't think I'll get started on it till the summer as I have other stories I want to write. Additionally, I would like to announce that when the twins run away with their friends, they will team up with two humans who escaped from the RDA and the RLS (made up organisation) who oppose them. See you all soon and once again thank you all for your support.
