Summer followed Daniels passing by multiple Kriegsmen. She flinched as artillery off. She watched one get shot. What shocked her was that the other troopers gave the body a single glance before resuming to monitor the battlefield.
"I know what you're thinking. Why?" she heard Daniels say. Summer glanced in his direction. "We're trained to know only war, and aiding a wounded soldier isn't ideal. We leave that to the quartermasters. Most of us, if not all would rather die for the holy emperor than live in shame." Summer frowned.
"What do you mean by that? Live in shame?" She asked. Daniels glanced over his shoulder. "In life, war. In death, peace. In life, shame. In death atonement. This is the litany of the multiple Death Korps in service. Millenia ago, our home world called Krieg was a lush and vibrant world. However, it's an irradiated wasteland now due to our greatest sin. A Civil War that lasted five hundred years after nuclear weapons were detonated."
Summer was speechless as Daniels continued to speak. "No one in the 863rd knows what it once looked like. We only have descriptions in books to paint a picture in our heads." The Guardsman said sadly
Summer looked down. she honestly couldn't imagine living on a world like that. "What of Remnant Ms. Rose? What's it like?" the Krieger asked. "Lush like your planet once was, but it also has a desert, and a great glacier of ice in the northern hemisphere."
Daniels looked at her with wonder, both were unaware that summer had unintentionally gained the attention of nearby troopers with her description of Remnant. "and these Grimm creatures roam it and destroy everything in their path?" Daniels asked. Summer nodded slowly. "then when you get back, never stop fighting Ms. Rose." The trooper said before motioning towards another doorway dug into the dirt.
Summer walked in and saw a guardsman uniform waiting for her alongside a rifle similar to the one Daniels had. She noticed Sundered Rose resting near the rifle.
The huntress sighed, knowing that she'd have to part with her cloak. After taking it and her boots off, she was about to unbuckle her holster for Sundered Rose before she froze remembering that she wasn't alone. "Daniels, could you step out for a moment so I can get dressed." The Krieger tilted his head in confusion. "why should- OH! My apologies Ms. Rose." Despite wearing a mask, summer was sure he was blushing.
"I'll- um- wait outside." Daniels said before bolting for the exit. A soldier he may be, but Daniels knew to respect a woman's request. Summer smiled before proceeding to undress herself.
Daniels, Still slightly red faced underneath his mask, stepped out of the barracks. Commissar Reiner was passing by when he did. "Ah D-4231. Why aren't you with Ms. Rose." The Commissar asked. "She's changing into her uniform sir." Nicholas nodded. "I see that you're respecting her privacy." The commissar noticed that Daniels' demeanor was different. "What's wrong Guardsman?" he asked
"It's just.. she says that Remnant is lush with greenery, a desert, and a large glacier of ice. Those Grimm are destroying it." Nicholas frowned. The Grimm sounded like creations from the warp, but they didn't come from another dimension like the chaos inquisition did but rather from Remnant itself.
Summer had said her people and the Xenos called Faunus had been fighting them for centuries if not millennia. Despite their best efforts, these huntsmen and huntresses summer spoke of didn't seem to be effective.
"How do I look?" came Summer's voice. The two turned to see the huntress dressed like a guardsman save for the mask. "I need my hair in a bob cut if I'm going to wear the mask Reiner." Nicholas nodded.
"we'll do that when we have time. However, for now D-4231, S-0883 join the wall." the commissar said confusing Summer. She knew Nicholas was referring to Daniels with the prior ID number, but who was the latter. As if sensing her question, Daniels answered.
"I believe that's your ID number during your stay Ms. Rose." Her caretaker said. "Forgive me Ms. Rose, it's just natural for me to call a trooper by their ID number. That doesn't mean that I see them as expendable. They are my brothers in all but blood. When we discuss things relating to Remnant…" Nicholas said
"I understand Reiner." Summer said before looking at Daniels. "Lead the way Daniels." With that the Huntress and Guardsman headed to Daniels' post
12 YEARS LATER
Summer trudged through the trench exhausted. She'd been living in the trench for twelve years. Thankfully, communications with the imperium had been restored six months after she'd first arrived on Vraks. Nicholas had done as he'd promised and told the council of her situation. While they reprimanded him for harboring a heretic of unknown origin, they understood why. She had nowhere to go. Thus, tech priests were assigned to make a gate to her world with a request from the huntress herself. She didn't want the imperium to get Remnant involved in their wars.
Despite many protests from high ranked officials, the council agreed. However, unknown to Summer, the council was preparing something for her to aid in her people's fight against the Grimm.
Summer sat down and exhaled heavily as artillery rained down around her. "The fighting never stops." She said to herself having gotten used to it after twelve years. "No, it never does trooper." Summer turned to see Daniels approaching her. "I just want to get home." The former huntress said beginning to remove her mask.
Her counterpart sighed and nodded. "All of the 863rd Death Korps knows that. And so does the commissar. I say this on behalf of the Korps, the commissar, the god emperor, and your brother gods themselves. We will help you find a way to get home. Summer." He said motioning her to get up. "Come on, we're needed at the wall.
Summer and Daniels stood atop some boxes overlooking a devastated battlefield. Summer ducked down to place her helmet back on as Nicholas came up behind the line. He frowned, but said nothing. Soldiers of the death Korps were required to keep their masks on at all times. Summer was a different case due to her situation. He smiled knowing the news he had for her would brighten the former huntress's day
"Soldiers, Fix bayonets. I repeat Fix bayonets. Be ready for blood." He called out gaining the troopers attention and Summer's. "Wait, we're charging across Dead Man's Land after twelve years of me being here?!" the former huntress thought in shock. Summer shakingly attempted to attach her bayonet. She nearly dropped it, but Daniels, having noticed her shocked state, grasped her hands, and guided her into attaching it.
Summer breathed heavily. She was scared to death. "I was scared to death during my first charge as well." Her longtime friend said.
Nicholas glanced at the red tipped ravenette, praying that she'd survive this charge as he planned to alert her the good news once this battle was over. he pulled out a whistle and glanced at the woman once more. "May the god emperor and your brother gods watch over you." He took a deep breath and blew it.
Summer climbed the wall alongside Daniels, running towards the heretic lines, gunfire whizzing past them. Soldiers fell as the two continued. Shots hitting the two only for their aura to protect them.
Roughly two years after summer arrived Daniels was shot and nearly bled out. Summer had poured her aura into his body in an attempt to save him. The surrounding soldiers, whom had taken a single glance at their fallen comrade and resumed monitoring No Man's Land turned their attention back to the duo and were left in absolute shock as not only did Summer's hands glow, but D-4231's body did as well. To summer's shock Daniels had an Aura of his own afterwards.
The Heretics watched as she and Daniels approached their lines. "It's her. The withered Rose!" one called out in fear before being shot by summer. "Withered Rose?" Summer asked ludicrously. "Probably a nickname the heretics for you since you're fighting in a Death Korps uniform and have a rose painted on of your shoulder guards." Daniels said before entering the trench.
After another twenty minutes of fighting Summer and Daniels exited the trench to see Nicholas and Adler approaching with Guardsmen who didn't join the charge.
"Not bad Ms. Rose." Nicholas said. "For Oum's sake Nick, you know I want you to call me Summer." Summer said. "I know, but I'd like discuss some news formally." The Commissar stated. The former huntress frowned. "What news?" she asked.
Nicholas smiled and looked to Adler. "Your war's over soldier. You're going home." The Apothecary said. if Daniels and another Krieg soldier not been beside her, Summer definitely would've collapsed.
"there's more as well. Though part of it isn't good. The portal's one way." Nicholas said. "So, if I go through I won't see you guys again." Summer said disheartened
That's where the rest of the good news comes into play. The 863rd Death Korps' request to accompany you back to remnant was approved. The council is also assigning some different units to aid in our campaign against the Grimm. "An expeditionary force!?" Summer exclaimed, tears threatening to fall
"Think of it as the Imperium's way of saying thank you for your service while it worked on a way to get you home." Nicholas said. "Once we arrive on Remnant we are yours to command Summer." Adler said.
Nicholas smiled happily. He was glad he come reunite a woman with her family. Suddenly something caught his eye. a red dot. The commissar's eyes widened. It was the dot of a sniper rifle and it was on Summer.
"SNIPER! GET DOWN!" He yelled rushing towards the woman. Like hell, he'd let the twelve years' worth of work the Imperium's best tech priests did go to waste. A gunshot rang out as he wrapped his arms around Summer pulling her to the ground.
A/N: I'm evil aren't I? A cliffhanger. I have a question for you all. Was Nicholas fast enough to save both himself and summer? Type yes or no in the comments and see the answer next chapter.
