After hours and hours of designing, fabric browsing, pinning, stitching, sewing, frustrated mental blocks…it was complete. Everything was ready for the ball set to start the following night. Well, apart from a matching bow made for a certain blonde that was in the same class. Through all the trials and tribulations, Marinette Dupain-Cheng persevered with the greatest creation in the history of her blossoming Parisian fashion career. Standing back to admire the creation of her dreams, the teen swiped a hand across her glistening brow before planting it on a hip. The entire room looked like a fabric confetti gun had gone off, but it was worth it.
"Marinette, it looks beautiful! Adrien is going to love it!" The little Kwami, Tikki, trilled with a few excited spins around the stationary gown before returning to her holder. The tiny pink body sat down gently on one shoulder to admire it some more. The teen didn't seem to hear that comment as she adjusted some of the fabric around, trying to piece together the puzzle. With a sigh, Marinette gave up and took a few steps back with a hand against her face.
"Hmm. There's still something missing, something…special. But I can't for the life of me figure it out before tomorrow's ball! What am I going to do, Tikki? I've gone through every drawer, basket, and shelf in my room in search of it!" Marinette groaned with tired fingers intertwining through frazzled midnight locks. It was already a time crunch to get it done due to the amount of Akuma attacking the city, keeping both Ladybug and Cat Noir more than busy each night. The last time she'd had a full night's sleep was a few weeks ago. Even her friends were noticing the deep circles growing beneath once vibrant azul eyes and constant frazzled mind. It only ramped up the bullying from Lila and Chloe, the two taking the perfect opportunity to beat down on the already worn girl. A few outfits had to be drycleaned thanks to their antics. One set was even downright destroyed.
Every time she tried to get an adult to listen to the issue at hand, Lila and Chloe would find a way to rebut the claims. They'd already tried to get the ravenette expelled multiple times, each time driving the spike of anxiety further through her chest. Marinette Dupain-Cheng was riddled with holes of insults, betrayal, lies, disappointment. Despite the comforting words of those surrounding her, they barely scratched the surface of the turbulent deep below. Some days were barely held together than others. The days that weren't held together…
"What about some polka dots?" The Kwami suggested with a shrug. Marinette sadly shook her head at the idea. That was one of the initial suggestions though it quickly flew off the table. It couldn't resemble Ladybug too much or her identity could be at risk.
"I appreciate the idea, Tikki, but the patterns would clash together like a hot train wreck. Oh, shoot! We're supposed to meet Alya, Nino, and Adrien at the fabric store for their grand opening! Surely, we can find something there, right?"
"As long as I get to take a yummy snack with me!"
"Always, Tikki."
Rushing down the endless stairs to reach the bakery below, Marinette hastily waved goodbye to her busy parents then burst through the front doors. She still had a few hours to make adjustments, so there was a chance she could get it fixed up in time. Weaving through the busy Friday crowds of Paris, the teen ran the few blocks to the brand-new fabric boutique of Rue d'Orsel. Supposedly, it was a high-end shop that carried every imaginable linen from far and wide. Some of the best designers in Paris went there for new inspirations! Gabriel Agreste was handling the unveiling of the shop in collaboration with his latest collection, Eternal Preservation. Which meant that Adrien was going to be there. Though despite that not being the main reason for going, it was a nice added bonus. Who was she kidding? He was totally the main reason for going. The fabric for her dress was a secondary priority.
Lately, they'd been slowly growing closer the more they hung out. Instead of seeing Adrien Agreste as the most perfect human being on the face of the planet, Marinette was beginning to know and understand the person beneath the shell. Adrien was kindhearted, caring, supportive, smart, funny, overall the nicest and most understanding person she knew. The stuttering had died down a little, thankfully, but the feelings grew more intense. He'd even managed to get three passes to his father's unveiling of the new fabric store he was collaborating with, sharing it with her, Alya, and Nino the moment it was approved. The shop was set to open within an hour meaning Marinette also needed to get there and find her friends.
"Wow, they're so busy! I didn't think this through very well, Tikki," Marinette whispered down to her Kwami as she hit a wall of people hustling and bustling down the street filled with shops. She apologized profusely left and right after stumbling over her own two feet then pinging off people like a pinball before finally landing flat on her face against the cobblestones. "Ow…"
"That's a good look for you, Dupain-Cheng. Maybe you should prostrate yourself like that more often and you'll actually get somewhere instead of groveling for everyone's attention. Especially Adri-kins."
An annoyingly high-pitched voice that grated on Marinette's nerves reached her ears. With a calming breath out, the teen pushed herself up to her feet only to be shoved back down into a puddle of muddy water. Chloe let out her usual haughty laugh yet there was another one with it, one that sparked an even larger fire within. A fake tinkling that fooled others, but not her. Looking up with anger twisting over normally cheerful features, Marinette stared down the two biggest bullies of College Francoise Dupont. Lila Rossi and Chloe Bourgeois. Heat burned across both cheeks as the former held out a hand as if to help a poor soul. The teen slapped the hand away before clambering up by herself, now thoroughly soaked to the bone and in no condition to enter a store.
"Ouch! How could you just hit me like that, Marinette! I was only trying to be a good friend and help you up after watching you trip over yourself. How could you be so cruel?" Lila feigned pain with a dramatic cry, clutching the appendage close to her chest. Wide blue eyes darted over to Chloe who was smugly holding out the obnoxiously bedazzled phone. The phone that currently seemed to be recording the entire situation.
"You know that's not what happened, Lila. I don't appreciate you lying all the time to get your way." Marinette replied tartly while attempting to brush off the soggy pebbles imbedded into now red skin. Stingy pain had the teen checking underneath her forearm. The skin had split open and was beginning to bleed steadily. People surrounding them began to whisper amongst themselves, only furthering the embarrassed flush filling the youthful face. "If you'll excuse me, I was trying to get some more fabric for my gown."
"Oh, for the ball you won't be attending tomorrow? What a pity. Such a shame about that, really. Seems your reservation somehow ended up going missing," Chloe added in after a glance with Lila, the smirks on their faces growing wider.
"What are you talking about, Chloe? I made my reservation as soon as the submission period opened up." Apprehension began creeping around the edges of Marinette's heart. There was no way. They couldn't have done that in such a short period of time, right? How could they have possibly removed it from the school system? Then again…Lila had everyone wrapped around her pinky while Chloe resorted to calling her mayor father for any small disruption in her life. The harassment up until now, was it just a prerequisite to the grand finale of their scheme?
"As class representative, I try my absolute best to ensure that each and every student gets to enjoy such a special occasion that happens at the end of the year. But…I'm afraid to admit that mistakes do happen, Marinette, despite my best efforts. I'm sorry, the deadlines have passed and it's too late to reserve another spot for tomorrow. I hate to see all of your hard work going down the drain." Lila soothed in a sickly-sweet voice, crocodile tears filling lying caramel eyes. She still kept her 'injured' hand close to her chest, ensuring those around could see.
Marinette felt the burning heat of rage take a drastic temperature change to a frigid, icy hand that squeezed a pounding heart. All she wanted to do was enjoy being with her friends and have fun at the biggest school function of the year. She was going to finally do what she should've done so many times before: confess to Adrien. Actually confess to him. But fate had different plans. All motivation to finish the custom gown drowned out over the humiliating snickering coming from the two teens standing before her. Marinette dropped her head down as the tears threatened to surge over. It wasn't fair. None of it was fair.
"Is there a big scoop going on over here? Nino, come on! I need to see what's going on! Out of the way people, future journalist and Ladyblogger coming through!" Alya loudly proclaimed while weaving through the throng of people, phone in hand. She'd arrived with Nino to support Adrien with the opening of the store, curtesy of his father, and was about to text Marinette to hurry up for her pass. "Alright! I've been ready for some new Ladybug action…Marinette? Oh. Oh, no. Nino."
"What? What's going on?" Nino stumbled through the frontline of people to follow his girlfriend's pointed finger, letting out a heavy sigh in the process. "Again? Can't they leave her alone? They're going too far."
"Seems to me they just won't get the message. Record this for me, it's going on the internet for all to see. I'm going to make sure they get it through their thick skulls this time," Alya grit out while rolling up her sleeves.
Deciding to further rub salt in the already gaping wound, Chloe snapped her fingers at Sabrina standing a foot away and motioned for the cup clenched in her hands. A grimace of regret filtered over the redhead's face, yet she begrudgingly held out the barely touched, still very warm cup of tea. Striding forward to the motionless Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Chloe Bourgeois decided to do the generous deed of warming up her chilled victim. Tossing her phone to Sabrina and making sure it was recording, she ripped the lid off and casually dunked the entire container over the ravenette's head. "Why don't you have a drink, Marinette? You should be able to tell why type it is because of your mixed heritage. How's it taste on top of all that humility?"
"Hey! What do you think you're doing! What's wrong with you two?!" Alya shouted, surging forward to knock the cup out of Chloe's hands. She let out a shriek of disgust and disbelief while clenching a hand to her chest after Alya flung the cup to the side with a smack.
"Me? What's wrong with you?! How dare you think you can just touch me like that! My Father will—!"
"Will finally see what a massive bully you are? And you, why am I not surprised to see you're a part of this, Lila? Don't you both have something better to do than bully Marinette?" The Ladyblogger whirled on the brunette with a finger aimed directly at her face. Mock surprise filtered across Lila's face before settling into a hurt/upset expression. A crowd was beginning to form around the six teens in an ever-growing circle.
"Me? I just happened to come along once I heard shouting. I would never—"
"I'm about to throw hands, Nino, make sure to record all of this." Alya called back to her boyfriend with gritted teeth. Nino nodded quickly and adjusted the phone for a better angle. "And what are you doing with that, Chloe? Wanting to keep a video as a keepsake? Here, why don't I help you?"
"Um, excuse me! You're blocking my view, Cesaire." Chloe snapped her fingers when the reporter-to-be stepped in front of the obnoxiously expensive phone, effectively blocking the entire camera lens. When the phone tried to move, Alya moved with it. The two danced around until the blonde let out an irate shriek and stormed off threatening to call her daddy to have the nuisance expelled. It didn't take much to drive off the spoiled rich brat. Satisfied one threat was taken care of, Alya turned back to the next.
"So, Lila, why don't you explain to me why my friend over there is soaking wet with mud? And it better be a good excuse, not one of your constant lies. Just for the record, I'd be very careful how you respond to that question because how Chloe was recording Marinette, I'm recording you and posting it to the Ladyblog." Alya crossed her arms and waited for a logical explanation. The sly teen before her merely blinked owlishly, eyes darting between her, and the phone Nino was holding up.
"Poor Marinette tripped over her own feet and fell into the puddle! I tried to help her up, but she slapped my hand away! I tried to be a good friend and help…" Lila replied with a quivering lip, putting on a show for those around. A few people began muttering amongst themselves, the air growing thicker with tension.
"As clumsy as my girl is, she wouldn't just fall backwards into a puddle with no warning. How do you explain the redness on her arms? That looks like the beginning of road rash to me, something that only happens when you hit the ground abruptly from an external force like a shove. Mind you, Lila, there are cameras pointing right at this spot. What's going to happen when I call the police and they request to pull the footage? I guarantee it's going to be a different story than what you're telling me right now. So, I suggest you run off with your tail between your legs before I really get mad."
Lila tsked. The nerd was receptive to the smallest of details. Eyes were beginning to bore into the back of her head, she needed to make a fast exit. "M-maybe you're right. I try so hard to be Marinette's friend…though it seems we won't be able to get over our differences. I'm sorry, I need to go grab some fresh air right now. I'm feeling so overwhelmed that it's causing my tinnitus to flare up! Ouch!"
"Did she seriously just say that?" Nino asked incredulously while stopping the recording, shaking his head in disbelief. There was no way anyone would believe such a blatant lie. Yet the murmurs around him began to say otherwise. "Maybe it's best if we go, Alya. I don't like how people are starting to side with her."
"Marinette? Are you okay? Come on, we'll go get you cleaned up. It'll be alright." Alya gently soothed before guiding her silent friend away from the crowds, shooing people out of the way with aggressive hand gestures. The ravenette remained quiet with her head down, blurry eyes focused on the cobblestones with a distant stare.
"Nino, Alya, I was wondering when you guys were going to show…up…" A familiar blonde popped through the crowd only to stop in front of Alya and Marinette, looking between his best friend and the two girls in bewilderment. Considering he'd just heard Chloe screech like a banshee, he had an inkling as to what just happened. Marinette refused to meet his worried gaze, going so far as to curl up even more in Alya's arms. "You can tell me what went down later, let's get off the street. I can get us through the back alleyway into a changing room."
"I-I'm fine! I'm just going to go home and change." Marinette mumbled in between sniffles, earning a sympathetic look from her best friend. "I…it was a mistake to come here. Sorry. I just want to leave now."
"We're not leaving you in this state. I don't know all what those two did, but they're going to pay, dude." Nino affirmed.
"Those two have really gotten out of hand. Maybe it's time to actually go to the police," Alya spoke delicately to Marinette, though the teen roughly shook disheveled locks. The blogger shared a mildly concerned glance with her boyfriend. "Marinette—"
"They'll never stop, Alya. It's best to just let it happen. Chloe has the power of her father and there isn't a soul who doesn't believe Lila. We've tried this before, it never worked."
"You aren't in this fight alone, Marinette." Adrien spoke up as he opened the door to a large changing room, ushering his friends in before shutting it behind them. Alya settled the quivering teen down on the closest chair and began searching for replacement clothes. The model motioned towards the rack in the far corner. He shared a pleading look with Nino who promptly assisted his girlfriend in the task. Slow movements had Adrien crouching down in front of his distraught friend, hands gently clasping onto the tightly fisted ones resting against her lap. She almost seemed to startle at the touch, but he didn't back down. Marinette was always there for him, now it was his time to be there for her. "We're all here for you. You don't have to face this fight alone. Lila and Chloe have been getting away with this for way too long, it's time to stand up to them. But…that first step starts with you, Marinette. All of us will stand behind you in support, but if you aren't able to make the first move, they'll keep taking advantage of that."
"I-it doesn't matter wh-what I do," Marinette whispered low enough that the blonde had to lean in a bit closer to hear. She didn't want Adrien getting involved in this, it wasn't his battle to fight. He had no reason to defend such a weak-willed klutz of a girl who stammered incoherently in his glorious presence. If only she had Ladybug's confidence in real life. The tears overflowed, rolling down burning cheeks to land on the soft and caring hands concealing her own tightly clenched ones. When emotions got too out of control, it made her an optimal target for Hawkmoth and his Akumatizations.
"It does matter. Everything you do matters. You're always there for us, so let us be there for you. Together, we can fix this situation."
"Model-boy is right, Mari. Besides, we've got the masquerade ball tomorrow! You can't let a little thing like this ruin one of the most important days of the year! Haven't you been gushing over the gown you designed, saying it was your greatest creation yet—"
"I'm not going!" Marinette sobbed out, halting the three in their tracks. "Just drop it, okay? It's not happening anymore!"
"What're you talking about? Didn't we all book our tickets at the same time?" Nino asked in confusion. Alya sent him a death glare to shut up. How she loved the man to death, but Gods was he as oblivious as his blonde BFF.
"Why would you change your mind all of a sudden? Girl, did those two do something? Are they preventing you from getting into the party?" Ever the detective, Alya hit the nail on the head as Marinette flinched. A frustrated growl left her mouth. "Those rats! Marinette, you need to tell me what they did so we can undo it. There's still time before the ball to fix this! Come on, change into these and we'll march over to the school then demand it to be fixed. Unbelievable! I know those two have no shame, but seriously? Every girl in Paris dreams of going to a masquerade ball!"
"We'll head over there now and see if we can catch Principal Damocles before he leaves. I think he's holding a teacher conference today. Got time to spare, bro?" Nino held out a confident hand to Adrien. After a few seconds of debate, Adrien nodded and released his grasp on Marinette's hands after a firm squeeze to stand.
"I can always tell Father I left something important at school. There's still almost an hour before the official unveiling of the store, so if we hurry it should be fine. I'll go find Nathalie, get a head start for me. Can you handle things here, Alya?"
"If I can chase Ladybug and Cat Noir through the streets of Paris during an Akuma attack, I think I can handle our girl for a few minutes. Call me with any updates." Alya caught her phone and waved the two off. With the room falling into a heavy silence, the teen took the chance to rummage around for a towel. "Marinette, I know you're feeling dejected right now, but this is nothing more than a hiccup. Lila and Chloe can't expect to stop you from going to the ball, you've been gushing over it for months! I've seen your design and it's breathtaking. You can't hide your talent from the world. Raise your head and be proud of who you are. You know they're just jealous of you, right?"
"Yeah right," The ravenette snorted softly causing Alya to smile. If anything could help erase the slump, it was saying something so ridiculously true that it acted like a total mental reset. Fight humiliation with dramatized compliments.
"For realsies. Why else would they throw their insecurities at you? Because you are a threat to them. Kind, funny, smart, gorgeous enough to acquire the attention of Adrien Agreste. What's not to be jealous of? Chloe throws herself at him any chance she gets yet never gets the response she wants. Lila tries too hard to be overly friendly and touchy-feely, again getting nowhere except the friendzone. All you have to do is be yourself and you have his undivided attention. Magical Marinette!"
"Who could ever love someone like me, Alya?" Came the softest of replies. "A klutz, bully target, situationally controlling, blabbering lovesick teenager who can't even properly talk to the guy she loves. Ladybug is the complete opposite of me. She's always strong, confident, caring, and always knows what to do and say."
"Marinette, you're forgetting the biggest factor: you are Ladybug! The only difference is a mask. Behind that, you're the same girl. All you need to do is channel that inner strength to show the world this is who you are. Your quirks aren't a hinderance, they make you, you. Here, go behind the curtain and change into something dry. Then we'll meet the guys at the school to sort this whole mess out, okay?" Alya shoved a pile of fabric into Marinette's hands alongside the towel before directing towards the changing curtain. Once she heard some shuffling around, the teen took the moment to slip from the room to watch the video Nino recorded. "Come on, baby, show me something good at least. Enough to get those two brats into enough trouble to last at least a month!"
The recording started once she began walking towards Chloe, the blonde clearly irritated with her antics. But to be honest, everything annoyed that girl. Alya scanned over her facial expression, body language, mannerisms, anything to reveal a hidden motive. As soon as the camera panned in a few ticks, something caught her attention that she hadn't noticed prior. While Lila was still pretending to be overly concerned for her 'friend', the expression adorning her face said otherwise. It was…twisted with maliciousness. For the briefest of seconds, Alya thought she was looking at an Akuma ready to emerge. But just as fast as it showed it disappeared. The thick hair Lila had made it easier to conceal such expressions, explaining why it wasn't as noticeable in the moment.
"Lila…why did she look like that? That girl is a danger and needs to be watched more closely. If the Miraculous hadn't been taken by Hawkmoth, then Rena Rouge could trail her no problem. I should let Ladybug know to keep an eye out for her during patrols. This is freaky," Alya murmured into a palm with a racing heart. Even though she hadn't witnessed it, seeing it on screen still gave her chills. Forgoing either of the bullies for the time being, she focused on Marinette. The ravenette remained stoic in the puddle, keeping her head down during the confrontation. Not once did she try to stop the situation or run from it, instead just accepting it. "Marinette…what's going on with you lately? You know you can trust in us, right?"
"Hey, what are you doing here? This area is off-limits to citizens!"
Alya tossed her phone out of fear and practically dove to catch it as a security guard stomped towards her with a sour face. Righting herself to be more presentable, the reporter put on her best serious face and began recording herself, whirling to make sure the guard was in frame. "Hello, Ladybloggers! Today I'm at the official opening of Rue d'Orsel for the release of Gabriel Agreste's Eternal Preservation collection dropping! Of course, this exclusive viewing can be accredited to my close friend Adrien Agreste! Thanks for the invitation, bestie!"
"Nice try, kid, I've already kicked out fourteen teenage girls trying to pull the same crap. Let's go before the cops decide to start throwing people in jail," The guard gruffed in annoyance. Alya merely huffed with a smirk before whipping out a badge from within her shirt and shoving it into his face.
"Believe it or not, I have exclusive access to this site curtesy of Adrien himself. He invited his friends to the opening, and I so happen to be one of those said friends. The other two guests on the list have yet to arrive. Though to be honest, I did get a little lost looking for the bathroom after Adrien had to return to his father. Could you please direct me in the correct direction?"
"Oh, Miss Cesaire, my apologies. I didn't realize you had arrived already. The restrooms are this way. Please try not to wander any further, this is an important day for Mr. Agreste."
"Of course, of course! It won't happen again, promise. Thanks so much for helping me out!" Alya beamed as the guard turned back around and motioned for her to follow. The smile slipped into a grimace of panic, and she shot off a fast text to Marinette. The message sent before the screen locked.
Get out of there quickly, Marinette.
"Marinette, your phone is going off. Aren't you going to answer it?" Tikki asked while holding up the phone to her silent Miraculous holder. It buzzed once more before the screen went dark, leaving the Kwami conflicted on what to do with it next. A hand slowly reached out for the device, hesitantly unlocking the screen and pressing on the message button. The screen had some water damage starting to affect it, so she had to push it a few times before it actually went through.
Security is on the prowl! Bug out! – Alya
"Security? Tikki, we need to leave. Forget about changing clothes, we're just going to head home instead. There's no hope in trying to fix things anymore." Marinette whispered dejectedly. The phone was shoved back into the soggy purse without a care, the Kwami floating around her nervously. She held open the bag for a few seconds before gently closing it shut. It wouldn't be comfortable for Tikki to ride in.
"Marinette, what's wrong? Are you still upset with what those mean girls did? You haven't been acting like yourself for weeks now, I'm starting to get really worried. I thought you'd be happy to attend the party tomorrow with your friends,"
"I'm just…tired. I've got a lot on my plate right now. Between the Akuma attacks, the schoolwork, bullying…being Guardian to the Miraculous. I'm tired of having to keep secrets from my friends and family only to protect my identity."
"You've always got Cat Noir by your side! Maybe you can ask him to help—"
"No. I don't want Cat Noir involved in my mess. That's not fair to him when he's been nothing but supportive this entire time. It's my burden to bear, not his. And I haven't exactly been fair to him lately, with all the lies and not including him during missions, lashing out when I know he's just frustrated. I…don't want to talk about this anymore, please. Let's just go home, Tikki."
The Kwami let out a small whimper of concern yet nonetheless stuck to her holder as she made for an exit. No security was in the hallway, so Marinette dipped for a fast escape out the door Adrien had opened to sneak them in. A painful weight nestled on the heavily beating heart, adding to the already intense crushing sensation. Breaths became rapid and shallow the more the pain persisted, increasing the waves of dizziness washing over the overwhelmed teenager. A stumble had the ravenette collapsing against one of the bridge pillars with a painful thud. The area was empty due to the grand opening of the shop, leaving Marinette to suffer in suffocating silence where no one would find her.
"Marinette! Hold on! I'll go get help! Don't move—" Tikki panicked, little hands fluttering around uselessly. Being so small had disadvantages in situations like this and it made the Kwami feel worthless.
"N-no…I just…need a minute…to rest…" Marinette rasped out, giving a pathetic attempt to sit up albeit ultimately hitting the ground in a heap. Azul eyes fluttered in and out of focus, the world around swirling into one large blob of colorless shapes. "T-Tikki…transform…"
"What?! Are you crazy? It could do more harm than good right now! You could be seriously injured, Marinette! I'm going to get help, don't worry!"
"Spots…on…"
A blinding flash of pink light had the teen transformed into hero. Ladybug used the enhanced strength of the Miraculous to pull herself from the ground. All appendages trembled from the effort, yet she had no other choice. It was either be left for dead in the middle of a bridge that no one would search near or transform and find a place to hide in order to take time to recover faster. The healing abilities of the Miraculous wouldn't take long to cure whatever ailment she had, then it was back home to give up on becoming a fashion designer icon. Tikki watched from inside the earrings with growing apprehension. If her holder wasn't going to ask for help, then she'd do it herself!
One of the perks of being a Kwami was the fact that communication between them could easily be established once they had holders. Just before Marinette grabbed onto the yo-yo, Tikki sent out an emergency alert to Plagg.
"Adrien, come on! I'm starving to death over here! I haven't eaten in forever!" Plagg complained loudly as his holder ran down the street as fast as he could, weaving in and out of throngs of people. Some recognized him yet he couldn't care less. Marinette was suffering, that was priority over camembert cheese.
"I'll feed you later, Plagg, we've got a bigger issue than your endless pit of a stomach to fill. Marinette's been dreaming of this dance ever since it was announced, yet Lila and Chloe are trying to take that away from her. I don't know how they did it but I'm going to make sure it gets set straight! I can't stand seeing her like that…I'm such an idiot. Maybe I should've done something more to stop the bullying, but I didn't like the coward I am. Cat Noir would've had the courage to put an end to it." Adrien cursed himself. His friend was immensely suffering and all he did was swoop in at the end of it to comfort the broken damsel in distress.
"Take it easy, kid! You can't control every rotten curdle that rolls from the cheese tree. Besides, normally that girl can handle herself. Though she's seemed a little odd lately. She doesn't even really stutter when talking to you anymore. Maybe she's finally ready to open up to you! Yuck! You're not going to get all smoochie with her, right?"
"Plagg, focus!"
"Fin—woah, woah, woah! Hold your whiskers!" Plagg smacked into Adrien's face without warning, the blonde nearly losing his balance from the sudden disruption in focus. To bystanders, it appeared to be a simple trip mid-step.
"What?"
"Something's not right. Sugar Cube just sent an emergency alert, but it ain't for an Akuma," Plagg turned around in a circle then focused on the Eiffel tower, tiny hand pointing at it urgently. "Come on, kid! You've gotta transform! Hurry up!"
"At least tell me what's going on! If it's not an Akuma, then what is it? Isn't Sugar Cu—Tikki, Ladybug's Kwami?" Adrien panted out. Fast cover between two buildings just a block away from the school offered optimal transforming coverage. Plagg, for once, looked uncharacteristically alarmed and uneasy. The Kwami remained focused on something unseen to the teen before blinking and looking over in distress. "Plagg!"
"Ladybug's in big trouble."
"Claws Out!"
The moment he was fully transformed, Cat Noir shot into the air with the aid of his staff. Jumping from roof to roof was the fastest option that the hero opted to take, eyes locked onto the Eiffel tower. A small tracker in his staff beeped more consistently the closer he reached Ladybug's location. It was moving, just not in the way he expected. While it shifted around in erratic movements, it wasn't Ladybug behavior. Every move she made was calculated down to the last step. This looked more like a runaway balloon floating through the skies.
"Where are you, M'Lady?" Cat Noir growled to himself after ferociously launching himself from a church belltower. He was getting close, close enough to see red and black polka dots if they were to cross his path. A low rumbling echoed above, dark clouds covering the normally sunny city. It was going to start storming sooner rather than later. The beeping grew louder until it hit a monotone level indicating he was nearly on top of the target. Grabbing onto a steel beam of the tower, Chat began climbing to the closest observation deck for a better lookout point. "Ladybug! Can you hear me?"
As soon as his foot hit the metal deck, the search began. Every nook and cranny, support beam, doorway, stairwell, elevator shaft. A free-ranged cardboard box was uplifted and thoroughly checked just in case. He couldn't even begin to calm down knowing she was in trouble all alone. Beeping on his staff drew sharp luminescent eyes to it instantly. It was on the move again, but…behind him?
"Bugaboo? Are you playing Chat and mouse with me?" Cat Noir called out flirtatiously, reaching the railing and looking up expecting to find his mistress in spots rappelling from the magical yo-yo. A frown tugged his lips further down when she was nowhere to be found. The tracker beeped again so he checked its location. Before he could even look up from the scanner, a splash below reached his ears. The beeping sounded once more before shutting off. Signal was lost.
The river below rippled from the impact of whatever landed in it, the noise audible from hundreds of feet up on the viewing platform. Emerald eyes widened. His body moved before his mind could comprehend the possibility of what'd just happened. The extendable staff propelled the hero faster towards the water. Just before impact, Cat Noir layered his hands to lower resistance against the liquid, sinking almost seamlessly into the river. It took a few seconds for the bubbles to clear then he was spinning around looking for a familiar color. A flash of red caught his attention, and he swam towards it, adrenaline fueling him forward with vigor.
Ladybug was slowly sinking towards the riverbed unresponsive as the yo-yo fluttered about in the steadily flowing water. A clawed hand reached out and wrapped around a limp wrist, yanking the lifeless body towards the surface. Cat Noir broke through the surface with a harsh gasp, ensuring his partner's head remained above the ripples. He paddled them both back to shore then carefully laid her out on the concrete. Both hands gently shook her shoulders.
"M'Lady? Can you hear me? I need you to open your eyes! Hey! This isn't funny, LB! Come on!" Noir pleaded desperately. Placing an ear against her chest, he listened for the sounds of breathing. There weren't any. The erratically beating heart thrumming against his ribs plummeted to the twisting stomach below. "Shit! Shit! Shit! Don't leave me like this, Bugaboo! You can't leave me alone; I won't let you!"
Cat Noir began compressions, checking for breath until he pinched her nose, tilted her head upward, and blew air into the still body. After three hearty breaths and another set of compressions, Ladybug harshly coughed before rolling to her side away from him. A clawed hand rubbed up and down her back as water was expelled back onto the concrete. Never had he been more thankful to take CPR classes than now. "M-M'Lady? Are you alright?"
"K-Kitty? What…happened?" Ladybug rasped wearily, rolling onto her back with eyes closed. Her mind was a jumbled mess that could barely send one command. One moment she was trying to climb to the top of the tower…then nothingness. Did she lose her footing? Misjudge a throw? Was she attacked?
"That's what I'd like to know. How did you end up way down here? Swimming lessons?"
Ladybug felt something warm splash against her face and scrunched both eyes before cracking them open. Cat Noir was hunched over her, trembling with claws clenched tightly against the ground. More warmth landed on the heroines' face. Azul eyes focused then went wide. "Chaton?"
"I-I…you weren't breathing…if I hadn't gotten to you when I did…" Cat Noir shuddered in between sobs. Thick streams of tears rained down over Ladybug in an endless barrage. A gloved hand shakily reached for his face, claws eagerly grabbing it to press against a soaked cheek. "P-Plagg said Tikki sent an urgent message. What's going on, M'Lady? Why couldn't you call me for help? I'll always be here for you…always."
"I'm sorry…I didn't mean to scare you like this…" Marinette felt her own salty warmth spill over to combine with the already cooling trails of her partners. With what little strength remained in her frozen body, the teen pushed up into a sitting position. The world began spinning almost instantly causing her body to sway back and forth. An arm slipped behind, and she blearily found herself pressed against the equally soaked, yet warm chest of her crime fighting partner.
"Don't apologize, I know how stubborn you are, Bugaboo. Ah, you're shivering! You should be at home resting! Come on, I'll take you somewhere safe." With ease Chat Noir cradled Ladybug against his chest princess style before leaping away from the water's edge. His partner said nary a murmur of protest and instead chose to sag heavily against his chest. To say he was worried was an understatement.
Not yet little Akuma, the time is not right.
Ladybug never let herself rest when feeling unwell or worn down. Akuma attacks were ramping up in the past month or so, meaning they were both constantly busy saving Parisians from their out-of-control emotions and the wrath of Hawkmoth's manipulation. Throwing in his own busy schedule full of modeling gigs, school, fencing, Chinese lessons, and typical teenage romantic drama made him one busy kitty. But seeing as his spotted partner also had the responsibility of being Guardian to the Miraculous, it was no wonder she'd reached a breaking point. And if it weren't for Tikki…it would've been her last.
Cat Noir shook his head quickly. No. He couldn't be thinking like that, it'd only make things worse right now. A breakdown session would be scheduled after Ladybug was safe and sound. Landing on a slanted rooftop, the hero surveyed the area with sharp eyes. He had two options at this point: sneak into the back of Rue d'Orsel and hide her there until the opening ceremony was over with. Or take her to a friend of his, someone who'd worked with Ladybug a time or two before. Neither option was ideal seeing as there could be prying eyes everywhere. A sharp canine bit into the tongue protruding from his mouth as he thought. Glancing down at his mistress breathing uneasily against him, Chat made a decision then took to the air once more.
The rooftop balcony was tranquil as the hero landed, not another soul in sight. Looking around to triple check that they weren't followed, Cat Noir crawled over to the hatch that led to a bedroom below. A few raps on the glass and bated breath kept the cat on edge while waiting for a response. After a few more urgent taps and no response, he frowned. Then mentally smacked himself. Duh! Of course she wasn't home! He'd just seen his friend be utterly humiliated outside of the new fabric store his father was collaborating with. After this he'd have to get back to the school as fast as possible before his friends began calling.
"Marinette wouldn't mind, right? Just for a little while,"
Carefully slipping through the opening with Ladybug tucked against him, Chat entered the room cautiously. Just because Marinette wasn't home didn't mean her parents weren't still downstairs in the bakery. There were enough floors between them to muffle any noises and surely, they knew their daughter was out for the time being. Since they were sopping wet from the river, some towels were needed to at least attempt to dry off. A lounge chaise against the wall was the perfect spot to set his lady for a brief span. Ladybug barely stirred at the movement, an incoherent mumble slipping past paled lips.
"I'll be right back in just a moment, M'Lady, rest for now." A feathery kiss against her knuckles then he slowly backed away to search for the nearest bathroom. While he'd been in Marinette's house before in civilian form, the bathroom was a mystery location yet to be discovered. Seeing as her room was all the way up top it made sense for one to at least be nearby.
The first door revealed a closet containing Christmas supplies, boxes of photos, a handful of jackets, and some Chinese ornaments resting securely on the shelf. Quickly shutting that one, he moved onto the next. Another closet filled with what looked to be just linens, pillows, and a rolled-up futon. Marinette's mother seemed to have brought a lot of personal items with her from China. They apparently also had a lot of closets in the same hallway. With the third time being the charm, usually, Chat pushed open the door and flicked on the light switch. A bathroom! Success! All he had to do was find some towels to take back upstairs. A small rack holding said objects made his quest easier, the feline hero grabbing three of the largest ones he could before dashing out of the room.
"Bugaboo, I brought back some…" Cat Noir started after placing the towels on the floor then hauling himself up, quickly turning around to close the door. Yet as soon as he shifted to look at his partner, the words died off abruptly.
Ladybug was no longer lying on the lounge. Wide emerald eyes shot around the room in search of any uninvited intruders, claws clenching tightly to the staff attached at his lower back. Had someone gotten in while he was out? No, he would've heard something, even so much as a skirmish right above. The roof hatch was cracked open despite making sure it shut snugly upon entry into the bedroom. With ease Chat leapt onto the bed rails and pushed the window open, ready to fight whatever was willing to get on his bad side. The balcony was vacant. No signs of struggle either.
"Ladybug! Where are you? Answer me!"
Cat Noir ran a hand through messy blonde locks as the panic took over. Had someone actually managed to snatch his beloved Ladybug right from under his sensitive nose? That was impawssible…they would've had to been followed and he made sure not a single eye was locked on. She was too weak to leave on her own accord, so where did she go? Hopping back inside, Chat surveyed the room from the edge of the bed. No signs of a skirmish. There were small puddles from when they came in, but it would be difficult to decipher which way they trailed.
"There's no need to worry about Ladybug, Cat Noir," A small, yet gentle voice spoke from beside him. He turned to see Tikki, Ladybug's Kwami, floating with a small smile on her face.
"You're Tikki. What happened to her? Did she detransform?" Chat slowly eased himself into a sitting position to calm the erratic heartrate drumming against his chest. The flying creature nodding eagerly before placing a small finger against her lips. Oh. He didn't hear any beeping to indicate Ladybug's time was running out. Did the Kwami force a transformation?
"Her identity must remain a secret, but…she also can't do without your help right now, Cat Noir. Will you swear to do everything in your power to avoid revealing the truth to those closest and to those who wish harm upon the Miraculous?"
"…as much as I've wondered who the girl behind the mask is, I understand the weight of the risks. I'll do everything in my power to protect Ladybug's identity." Chat responded lowly after barely a moment of hesitation. The girl of his dreams behind the mask was finally within his grasp…yet he wasn't excited. There was no joy in being so close to the one he yearned for. A squeezing hand of fear latched around his throat causing a claw to tug at the neck of his suit. After months of pestering, he'd given up on Ladybug revealing even the simplest hint about her true identity. Now, it was within his grasp in the most heart-wrenching way. It shouldn't take his partner nearly dying in order to know the truth.
"It would be best if you released your transformation as well to avoid suspicions. You may need your Kwami rested and ready in the event of an Akuma attack." Tikki fluttered into his face with a macaroon held out. Though as soon as he took it, he realized it was already missing a good bite.
"Say, Tikki," Chat started unsurely while staring at the treat resting within a gloved palm. The red Kwami tilted her head, nervously glancing back at something he was currently oblivious to. "Both you and Plagg…you've seen our identities before, right? You know who we are beneath the masks."
"Y-yes, we do, but that's only because you're our holders…" The Kwami didn't like where this was heading. Even for a being as old as she, the warning flags waved with each word he spoke. Many a times, other holders had tried the same trickery, yet Adrien Agreste didn't radiate an ounce of malicious intent. Romance between holders wasn't uncommon, it actually happened frequently, it was their identity reveals that became the metaphorical nuclear bomb. Or in one case, an actual bomb. That was the first and last time it happened, both Kwami's making sure of that. "But it is too dangerous for either of you to reveal yourselves. Hawkmoth is gaining traction in his attacks, garnering stronger usage of the Miraculous in his possession. If he were to Akumatize either of you…"
"It would end badly. I know. Plagg, Claws In." Adrien felt the familiar rush of power leaving his body, releasing the Kwami stored within the ring. Plagg fluttered away to stick by Tikki, both sharing a worrying glance. "What do you need me to do?"
"Simple, kid. Nurse your partner back to health. Nothin' to it!" Plagg announced before Tikki elbowed him in the side. He grumbled then sighed dramatically. "From what Sugar Cube informed me, Ladybug has been overexerting herself. Remember how I mentioned she'd been acting off for a few weeks? Well, it wasn't an exaggeration. She's at the point of putting her life in danger if she can't learn to slow down and take care of the only body she's got."
"When a Miraculous holder becomes Guardian without proper training, it can take a massive toll on the body if Kwami are used excessively. Even Master Fu never swapped through Miraculous like Ladybug does. I…wouldn't normally tell you this, Adrien, but Ladybug hasn't been sleeping or eating very well. The Akuma attacks are wearing her down. Hawkmoth is currently stronger than both of you combined. Unless you can overcome the barrier stopping you from powering up, I'm afraid you may never be able to defeat him." Tikki added in with a sad face. Plagg placed a hand on her shoulder for comfort.
"M'Lady has been sluggish in battles as of late. She nearly got sent flying into space by Matadoro last week because of zoning out. But I can't force her to eat or sleep." Adrien explained quietly while climbing down to pace across the floor, hand to his chin in thought. "I've even offered to take over patrols though that got dismissed pretty quick. Tikki, when was the last time she ate?"
"Um, are we talking full meals or picking at snacks?"
"Full, nutritious meal."
"…two weeks ago…" The Kwami replied nervously. Adrien rounded on her in a second with wide eyes.
"Two weeks? She hasn't had a full meal in two weeks? No wonder she's tired all the time! Why isn't she eating? Is there something going on in her personal life that's causing this?"
"Easy, kitten, there's only so much we can let loose! Whatever's happening in Marine—Ladybug's life is her business, not yours!" Plagg quickly corrected himself though it seemed his holder took notice of the mistake and sent him a suspicious look. Tikki slapped a hand against her face in defeat. "Ah, shit. Sorry, Sugar Cube. Kind of slipped out there…"
"Plagg,"
"Y-yes?"
"How much camembert are we talking…"
"You promised!" Tikki cried out as Adrien carefully stood up on the desk just below the bed to get a better look at what the Kwami was trying to hide. "If you reveal your identities—"
"How can I help my partner if I don't know what's going on with her life? I know our identities are supposed to remain a secret, Tikki, but if she's as dire as you both say then I'm sorry. I swear on my life that her civilian form will remain a secret and there won't be any special treatment after this. I just…I want to make sure she's alright. If that doesn't convince you enough, then here," Adrien pulled the Miraculous of the Cat from his finger and held it out to both stunned Kwami. "If I were to ever reveal Ladybug's true form to anyone, Akumatized or not, I will surrender my Miraculous and renounce my duties as Chat Noir. Ladybug's life comes first."
Both Kwami shared a long glance that seemed to convey a heavy debate. They nodded then turned to the awaiting blonde. Tikki floated over to the blankets first, motioning for him to keep quiet. A nod of confirmation and the Kwami carefully pulled back the edge of the blanket. Marinette shivered a bit from the minor loss of heat yet seemed to fall back into a restless slumber, rolling over to face the blonde. Adrien clamped a hand over his mouth to contain the gasp of surprise. Marinette. Marinette was Ladybug, his Ladybug. Emerald eyes traced over the pale face of both his friend and partner, taking note of the similarities he'd never noticed before. Maybe it was just the power of the costumes that warped human perception of them, but it was her all along. He carefully pulled the blanket back up to her chin and shifted some straggling hairs out of the way.
"Well, you're not freaking out at least," Plagg commented half-jokingly. It only earned him another jab in the ribs by his counterpart who looked like she ate a sour candy. There was going to be hell to pay later. "I'm just going to shut my mouth now."
"Adrien?" Tikki asked hesitantly. The poor boy was red in the face and looked like he was about to go into shock. He got off the desk before slumping into the computer chair, both hands covering his face. Both Kwami shared a nervous look then swooped in closer. "Are you okay?"
"It's just…I never realized…someone I'm always around, talking to every day, so close with…has been my right-hand partner for nearly a year now. But you know what the worst part is?" Adrien tightly grasped onto his hair as the surge of emotions broke through the dam. Tears rolled down his face in fat streaks, hitting the floor soundlessly. His voice began to break as he lost control of himself. "For the past year, I've watched Marinette be bullied and belittled in school and I didn't do a damn thing. I was always there after the fact instead of stepping in to stop the girls. I'm such an idiot…"
"Sugar Cube, maybe this was a mistake…"
"…I believe as long as Marinette doesn't find out, things may work for the time being. It's not ideal. None of this is expected, Plagg, but ensuring Ladybug and Cat Noir remain in the fight against Hawkmoth is imperative. Without Master Fu being Guardian of the Miraculous anymore and Marinette down for the count, there aren't any options left. We just have to be extra vigilant from now on. That means watching your tongue," Tikki glared at the Kwami of Destruction with a look that could kill.
"R-right…"
"Adrien, I understand all of this is a shock, but right now we need to get Marinette some medicine. Paris needs Ladybug now more than ever, especially since Hawkmoth is ramping up the attacks. Because he has all of the other Miraculous, there's no one else to help protect the city besides you two." Tikki explained gently to the distraught blonde.
"Come on, kid, you can freak out about this later. Focus on the girl who you may-or-may-not-love and get to work! The faster Marinette gets better, the faster both of you can return to saving the city and defeating Hawkmoth!" Plagg shouted while grabbing onto his holders face. The tiny Kwami stretched his cheek out with all his might until Adrien swatted him away.
"R-right, right. Sorry. It's a lot to take in right now. Okay, what do we need to get?" Adrien furiously swiped at his face until he felt in control of his emotions. They were still turmoiled beneath the surface, threatening to break through at any moment. Guilt was the biggest weight on his chest.
"Hmm…Marinette's mom tends to make a special herbal tea that always seemed to work pretty well. It should help Marinette recover faster plus a good meal." The Kwami of Creation suggested with a little shrug of her shoulders. "After that, at least a good day of rest and she should be good to go tomorrow."
"Good thinking! FFRCAOCC is a good start!" Plagg encouraged with a twirl. "Come on, just go downstairs, ask for all of that stuff, then come back and get Ladybug back on her feet!"
"Plagg, what on Earth is FFRCAOCC?" Adrien gave his Kwami a heavily confused look.
"Fluids. Food. Rest. Copious. Amounts. Of. Camembert. Cheese. Duh."
"…I'm not even going to bother trying to dispute that right now. I can't just walk downstairs like I was here the entire time. I'll have to transform and revert once I'm down on the ground. Most likely Marinette's parents know she's out of the house, so I need an excuse for that too." The teen deduced while looking out through the window behind the chase lounge. A light rain was beginning to fall over the gloomy city. Heaviness settled in the pit of his stomach. He had an inkling something bad was about to happen. "Plagg, let's hurry up and get down there so Marinette can start feeling better. I have a bad feeling about this incoming storm."
"Operation: Save Marinette and Ladybug is a goooooo—" Plagg got sucked into the ring before he could even finish his sentence.
"I'll keep an eye on Marinette for now. Just don't take too long, I'm worried about her, Adrien." Tikki spoke softly then flew to the sleeping teen just above. The Kwami nestled against her holders face lovingly. Marinette didn't even stir at the motion.
"I'll be back faster than you can say Camembert cheese!" Cat Noir gave a two-finger salute then jumped through the skylight, ensuring it fully shut before disappearing into the stormy weather.
'You have reached the voicemail of Adrien Agreste—'
"Seriously, dude? You were supposed to be right behind me! Where on earth did you go in such a short time?" Nino grumbled at the phone, pressing on the screen to end yet another phone call to the disappearing act that was his best friend. He'd made it to the school and planned on waiting for him, yet he never showed after more than five minutes of waiting. Teacher conferences would end soon and if they wanted any chance to plead their case, it needed to be now. "Alya's missing as well. Let me try Marinette first, see if they're together."
'Hi, you've reached the voicemail of Marinette Dupain-Cheng! Please leave a voicemail and I'll get back to you as soon as possible!'
"Nino! There you are! Where's Adrien?" Alya sprinted up to him a bit winded. She took a moment to compose then adjusted the slightly askew glasses resting against her nose.
"AWOL! Dude's phone is going straight to voicemail, same as Marinette's!"
"Marinette and I got separated due to security busting on the scene. I texted her to get away, but I figured she'd come to the school. What happened to Adrien? Shouldn't he have been right behind you?"
"Argh, we don't have time for this! Are you ready? We're going to have to do this alone, babe. Once the teachers leave it's all over." Nino let out a heavy breath while extending a hand to his beloved. Alya stared in admiration prior to slipping her hand into his with a determined nod.
"It's pretty hot when you take command."
"T-thanks?"
"So," Alya started as they rushed through the school doors in search of the principal. School had cut out yesterday due to teacher conferences, so they had the entire day to relax before the big ball. Well, most of them did. "What's the plan? Barge in and demand Marinette be allowed in? Hack the school computer system to erase Lila and Chloe's reservations then reinstate the one they deleted? Oh! How about we start a protest outside of the school and make it so no one goes until Marinette is allowed back in!"
"Uh…how about we try just talking to them first to see where that gets us. Going overboard from the beginning probably isn't going to help us any. By the way, where do you think those two could've gone? Their presence really could sway Principal Damocles in the matter. That's if he hasn't been persuaded by a certain pair already." Nino quickly suggested. Sometimes his girlfriend's plans were a bit…out there. Not that he didn't mind them, it was one of the reasons he loved her so much. It just wouldn't necessarily help in a situation like this.
"Fine, fine. Oh! There he is now! Principal Damocles! We need to talk to you, sir!" Alya pointed a finger at the educator then began dragging Nino up the stairs. Principal Damocles appeared not to hear her as he slipped back into his office, looking around just before the door shut.
The duo reached the office yet as Alya raised a hand to knock, multiple sets of voices froze the appendage in place. Both teens slipped to either side of the door in order to avoid being seen through the glass pane, peering cautiously into the office. On a wall mounted TV was Mayor André Bourgeois staring into the camera from his office. Alya pulled out her phone and hit play to record as much evidence as possible.
"Mayor Bourgeois, what a pleasure to see you again. What can I do for you this fine day?" The principal greeted him with the back of his chair facing the office door.
"Oh, cut the polite chatter, Denis. I'm assuming everything has been taken care of regarding the girl bullying my poor, sweet Chloe?"
"U-uh, of course sir! In fact, I've just finished conversing with all of Marinette Dupain-Cheng's teachers. But…there seems to be a bit of a story gap, I'm afraid."
"Meaning?" The mayor warned lowly.
"Well…there haven't been any reported incidents of bullying against your daughter. At least not with any of their shared teachers! That is to say, there are periods in between classes, restroom breaks, locker room times, lunch, after school activities—" Damocles quickly tried to list off other possibilities for the heinous accusations being thrown against his prestigious school. "T-there are unmonitored areas of the schools…"
"Are you or are you not going to take care of the situation? I've got a good dozen videos or so that prove that student of yours is a bully! If you want your school to still have funding come Monday morning, then it would be in your best interest to expel Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Are we understood?" The video cut off sharply leaving the principal sighing heavily into the silence.
"Nino, this is worse than we thought. Those two are trying to permanently get rid of Marinette instead of just kicking her out of the ball. We're going to need more backup than this." Alya whispered nervously as they both hunkered down. She stopped the recording, gripping the phone tightly in a trembling hand. "How about you go find Adrien while I run to the bakery and look for Marinette? If I know that girl, and I do, she most likely snuck out the back and went straight home. I'll start digging up what dirt I can on these videos Chloe was talking about. Call me if you get a hold of model-boy."
"Leave it to me!" Nino grinned. A fast peck on the lips had the two sprinting off to find their targets, minds focused solely on the mission ahead. Whipping out his phone, the teen dialed his BFF once more and waited with bated breath.
Adrien stepped into the bakery just as the rain came pouring down, thoroughly drenching any poor soul left wandering outside. A breath of relief slipped past his lips. At least Lady—Marinette wasn't caught outside in the torrential rain shower. He was still having trouble trying to wrap his mind around the concept that his Lady and classmate were the same person. If the situation were different, of course he'd be ecstatic. But right now he just felt awful about everything. As Cat Noir, he swore to protect Ladybug with his life. So why shouldn't he be doing that with his friends? Truth be told; Adrien Agreste was a coward outside of the black leather suit and mask, nothing more than a pawn shuffled around by his controlling father.
"Oh, Adrien! So nice to see you again! Would you like some croissants or macarons today? I've got a fresh batch coming out!" Tom Dupain jovially greeted the blonde with a wave in the process of taking a tray out of the oven then swapping in a new one. Everything smelt so good that Adrien placed a hand over his rumbling stomach. It was lunchtime already.
"Hello, Mr. Dupain. I appreciate the offer though I'm actually here for something else. Is Mrs. Dupain-Cheng available?" Plagg stuck his head out from the shirt with a heavy inhale of the wonderous scents permeating the air. It wasn't camembert cheese, though pastries and breads were a close second in the Kwami's book. When his holder wasn't looking, the little black cat swooped down to hide in the display case of delicacies.
"Sabine? Could you come over here for a moment? One of Marinette's friends is here for you." Tom called out to his wife lightly. "Just to satiate my own curiosity, may I ask what it's about?"
"Oh, I was actually wanting to know if it was possible to get some Chinese herbal tea and a good homemade soup. My…dad's assistant isn't feeling the greatest, so I wanted to get her these things to aid her recovery." Smooth, Agreste. Totally not getting these things for his daughter who is currently upstairs in bed severely fatigued.
"How wonderful! You are such a kind and thoughtful young man. I hope one day my Marinette will find someone like you, Adrien. Maybe it will be you! A father can dream of such a perfect son-in-law." Tom clasped his hands against his face happily, oblivious to the embarrassment flushing the teens face and startled step back.
"Adrien, how are you dear? Aren't you supposed to be at the unveiling of that new fabric store with your father? Marinette mentioned heading out to get more fabric, so I assumed that's where she went. She's been talking about it all week." Sabine warmly greeted Adrien while drying her hands with a towel. The apron she was wearing had flour and bits of dough splattered all over it, meaning she was in the back working hard to keep the store stocked.
"Good, thank you. I am meant to be at the store though Father's assistant isn't feeling well, so I wanted to rush over here and see if it was possible to get some tea and a warm meal to help her feel better. I know Chinese medicinal meals are great for the body's immune system." Adrien replied politely, hands clasped at his front. The look on Marinette's mother's face told him she was beyond elated at the request. She clasped her hands together at chest level and beamed brightly with shimmering eyes.
"Of course! Of course! I haven't made it in a while, though it won't take long. Everything I need is upstairs in the kitchen. Would you like to help? Tom, can you hold down the bakery for about half an hour? The next batch of loaves are ready to go in and there are six more trays of macarons ready as well." Sabine turned to her husband with pleading eyes, even going so far as to bat her lashes a few times. Tom swooned easily and nodded with a smile. "Follow me, Adrien.
"I really appreciate your help with this, Mrs. Dupain-Cheng. I can absolutely pay for it—"
"Nonsense! I would never charge you for something like this! You're such good friends with Marinette that it's the least I could do. She just hasn't really been herself lately and I know as a parent it's our job to worry, but is there something going on at school we should know? My little dumpling doesn't want to open up about it. I'm beginning to worry a bit." Sabine responded honestly as she led the way up two flights of stairs to reach the main floor of the house.
"…it may not be my place to say, ma'am, though there's been an issue with bullying." Adrien said quietly, trying to meet the worried eyes of Sabine yet failing and diverting emerald orbs down. Two gentle hands rested against his shoulders causing him to look up in surprise. Sabine had such a motherly look on her face that for the briefest of moments, his own mother's face flashed across his mind. A sad pang flashed across the aching heart in his chest.
"I can tell you're blaming yourself, Adrien. Marinette is no stranger to bullying. Time and time again she has been tested against the odds, always pushing through the darkness. But I understand the immense stress a teenager can withgo and the long-term effects. She barely leaves her room, grazes at dinner, and has bags underneath her eyes. Maybe we as parents can't reach through to her, but I believe her friends can."
"I'll always be there for Marinette, I promise."
"I knew I could count on you. Now, let's go make up some herbal remedies for your friend. And please feel free to call me Sabine."
Marinette shivered violently enough to the point it awoke the teen from an already uneasy rest, the ravenette squinting at the ceiling with hazy eyes. She felt hot and cold simultaneously, an uncomfortable sensation to say the least. A clammy hand lifted to a throbbing head. When did she get back to her room? Wasn't she going somewhere? A bit of effort had the teen sitting upright albeit a little unsteadily. Sky blue eyes surveyed the room for a moment in an attempt to figure out what was going on. Something small smacked into the side of Marinette's face with a squeak.
"Marinette! I was so worried! I told you it was reckless to use your Miraculous in your condition!" Tikki wailed against Marinette's cheek, the sound partially muffled. A hand gently pressed against the Kwami's back in a comforting gesture.
"Tikki…sorry. I should have listened to you. What happened?"
"You overexerted yourself and passed out near the top of the Eiffel tower! Just be thankful Plagg received my message and Cat Noir came to your rescue. You landed in the river, Marinette. If he hadn't shown up…" The Kwami trembled with tears rolling down crimson cheeks. Very rarely had the tiny creature shown so much distress, Marinette feeling a pang of guilt flash across her heart.
"Chat? Where is he now?"
"I…u-uh…he said he'd be right back. Yup. Cat Noir. Should be back any minute now." Tikki forced out with a crooked grin as she tried to divert the conversation and quickly. Marinette blinked a few times at the odd expression straining her Kwami's face. The Kwami of Creation wasn't very good at lying, that much she knew early on.
"Tikki…did something happen with Cat Noir?" Marinette questioned softly. Tikki stiffened up with wide eyes, both hands slapping over her mouth. A hand gently scooped up the tiny creature, cradling her like a delicate flower. "You can tell me; I won't be upset with you. If something's bothering you then I want to help in any way I can."
"Oh, Marinette…I'm sorry! I didn't want it to happen, but you weren't doing great and being transformed took a large toll on your body. I…reversed the transformation. Cat Noir knows you're Ladybug. Please don't be mad…he's sworn on his Miraculous to never reveal the truth to anyone."
Marinette furrowed her brows through the fog clouding what little mental capacity she had left at the moment. Cat Noir…knew she, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, was Ladybug? Tikki stared up worriedly. Slowly, the hands holding the Kwami lowered until they reached the comforter crumpled up over her legs. Azul eyes blinked once, twice, then widened to their limits as the realization smacked over the teen like a tidal wave. Cat Noir knew her secret identity.
"T-Tikki, do you know what this means?" Marinette whispered brokenly into the air. It was all over. Their identities were meant to remain a secret for a reason. If Hawkmoth were to ever gain control over Cat Noir, then he could accidentally reveal the truth. She'd seen that reality where their identities were revealed, and the nightmares about Chat Blanc never truly went away. With her being the Guardian of the Miraculous, it was a risk that couldn't happen. The world that was crumbling around Marinette suddenly imploded into nothingness. There was no hope left now. "I'll have to give up being Ladybug. It's too risky for Hawkmoth to Akumatize either of us now."
"Marinette—"
"I…I…" Marinette shakily reached for the earrings residing in each earlobe. Could she…actually give up something so precious? A double life that freed her from the torture of modern reality? Trembling hands latched onto the jewelry only to freeze in place. Tikki watched with palpable distress, tiny hands wringing together at her front.
The door to the loft suddenly sprung open to reveal a sopping wet mess of red tinted chocolate locks. Alya quickly scanned the room before locking onto the frozen in place ravenette atop the bed. Without a word she closed the door then climbed the ladder to sit directly in front of her friend with a stern expression. She looked pissed. When Alya was pissed, bad things happened. Marinette opened her mouth to say something when she was enveloped tightly.
"You idiot! Don't you know how worried we all are? Why would you just run off like that? First you go missing then Adrien disappears without a trace! You two are going to be the death of me!" Alya criticized in one heavy breath, squeezing Marinette tighter before releasing and holding her by the shoulders. "Anyways, we've got bigger problems now than you disappearing into the night. Lila and Chloe are trying to get you expelled from school over false bullying allegations! Principal Damocles was threatened by Mayor Bourgeois, and I have the proof. We need to go to the school and get this sorted out, now. If you get expelled then Lila and Chloe win."
"…Alya…" Marinette quietly tried to interject while Alya began going through her phone for more details, oblivious to the distress growing within.
"Luckily, I've recorded almost every interaction between you three so it shouldn't be hard to contradict the falsified evidence they have. I don't care if her dad is the mayor of Paris, that brat needs a life lesson."
"Alya."
"Shoot! I need to call Nino. I told him I'd call when I found you. Hold up a minute," Alya punched in a number and placed the phone on speaker, anxiously bouncing her legs up and down. The call connected after the third ring. "Nino? Hey, I've found Marinette back at home. Any luck with Adrien?"
"Yeah, just got off the phone with him. He said he was headed back this way when he noticed Marinette was missing from the changing room. I guess he's been running around looking for her in the storm. Do you want me to meet you there?"
"I'll grab Marinette and head back to the school—" Alya slid off the bed to pace around on the floor with phone in hand, already formulating a plan without heeding the desperate pleas of her friend.
Out of the overflowing frustration building up within, Marinette haphazardly stood on the bed before reaching for the roof hatch. Tikki fluttered anxiously at her side, constantly glancing between the two. Things were getting out of hand and Marinette's emotions could spiral out of control, easily luring an Akuma to the area. The Kwami struggled with indecisiveness before steeling her resolve. Cat Noir needed to come back fast. Luckily, he was a few floors below getting some medicinal food and drink. Which meant Plagg was loitering around somewhere in the bakery with that glutenous stomach of his.
Tikki flew past Alya when her back was turned and zoomed through the house in search of her friend. An enticing smell slowed the Kwami just a few floors up from the bakery, beckoning her closer. While it wasn't sweet smelling, it sent a wave of familiarity through the Kwami of Creation. Curiosity took over and Tikki followed the scent to reach a kitchen filled with a multitude of pots and pans simmering on the stovetop. Sabine bustled around with ingredients in hand, carefully distributing them into the appropriate pot. Adrien stood nearby carrying on a casual conversation with Marinette's mother. Almost as if he could sense the Kwami nearby, his eyes darted over to where Tikki peered around the corner. A small red hand motioned for him to quickly come over.
"I'm sorry, Sabine, I just need to step away to use the restroom. Could you please direct me towards it?" Adrien asked quickly after nodding at the Kwami.
"Of course! Just up the stairs, first door on the left. I can handle things here for a bit, don't worry. The soup should be done momentarily." Sabine smiled and waved him off with a hand.
"Thank you! I won't be long." As soon as Adrien walked around the corner, Tikki was hovering at eye level with hands twisting nervously. "Tikki? What's wrong?"
"It's Marinette, Adrien. You need to find Plagg and transform. She's talking about relinquishing her Miraculous! I'm afraid she's going to become Akumatized at this rate! She snuck through the roof hatch just now. Alya is upstairs too—"
"Wait, what? What do you mean she wants to surrender her Miraculous?" Fear and regret gripped his chest so tightly, Adrien needed to support himself on the wall. Did she…? How? "What…did she find out? Tikki, did she find out I know her civilian identity? Did you tell her?"
"Y-yes," Tikki replied tearfully. "She was afraid that if you were to ever be Akumatized, her civilian identity as Guardian of the Miraculous would be revealed and Hawkmoth could take control. I'm sorry, she asked what happened and I couldn't lie!"
"It's not your fault, it's mine. I took the risk in knowing Ladybug's identity. I'll fix this, don't worry. Plagg, it's time to go!" Adrien opened his shirt to let the Kwami out only for him to be missing. Shaking out the shirt just in case, the teen patted himself all over in search of his pal. "Plagg? Where'd you go? Seriously, not the time for this!"
"My best guess is that he's downstairs in the bakery eating everything in sight. Go to Marinette, I can handle the glutton."
"Right!"
"Wait, Adrien! Alya is in Marinette's room! She thinks you're still out looking!" Tikki called out to the retreating blonde. A thumbs up was all she received before he disappeared onto the next flight of stairs. Satisfied he knew what to do, the Kwami set off to find Plagg.
Adrien skidded into the bathroom, silently shut the door, and pulled out his phone. Nino had just called him a few minutes ago wondering where he was. No doubt Alya had called once finding Marinette upstairs. He needed her out of that room with a good excuse. With a quick dial the phone began to ring. He moved to the furthest part of the bathroom in case she heard him talking.
"Adrien! Where in the world are you at? Nino said you were out looking around for Marinette."
"Yeah, I haven't seen any signs of her yet. Do you know where she is?" Apart from upstairs probably about to become Akumatized!
"I'm at her house now, she's safe. We're going to meet at the school in a bit—"
"I'm not far from the bakery, can you meet me downstairs in about thirty seconds? I'd like to talk to you before meeting up with Marinette." Adrien could almost hear the gears turning in Alya's head. A few seconds of pause meant she was deciding if it was worth it. "Please, I…I think I upset her earlier and I don't want my presence to cause more harm than good."
"Alright, alright. I'll be right back, Marinette." Alya called out before shifting the phone closer to her mouth. "Give me a few seconds to be down."
"Thank you, Alya. See you soon." The call ended. Pressing himself up against the bathroom door, Adrien waited until he heard her go by before cracking the door open. All he saw was the top of her head disappearing into the lower levels. The teen shot towards the loft and carefully opened the door, looking around to make sure the coast was clear. A quick scan of the room ensured Marinette was no longer inside, so he scaled the bed ladder to reach the roof access hatch. It was already left partially open, allowing rain to slip through the gap and onto the bed. He could feel the biting cold hit his skin as he lifted himself onto the balcony.
Marinette sat curled up against the railing getting absolutely drenched, though it didn't seem to be a bother. Her head was pressed into knees drawn tightly in. Adrien snatched up the umbrella resting against the side of the house and propped it open. His friend didn't seem to notice the sudden lack of freezing rain pelting her until something warm covered a frigid hand. Blearily, the teen looked at the hand prior to lifting a watery gaze to the blonde crouched beside.
"Hi," Adrien spoke delicately with a small smile.
"…"
"How are you doing?"
"…why does it matter…" Marinette finally responded in a croaky voice, the emotion clear and very raw in her throat. Adrien felt his throat constrict. Guilt ran rampant through his chest. He should've been there for her.
"Well," Adrien started as he shifted to sit fully on the wet balcony, ensuring the umbrella covered her completely even as the rain pelted his back. "You're my friend and I'm worried about you. Alya and Nino are too. Want to talk about it? I've been told I'm a good listener."
"It's nothing, I'm just worn out is all. There's no need for everyone to be worried."
"I don't believe that for a second and neither do you." Marinette jolted a bit at the sudden change in tone, his voice coming off as firm yet understanding. For a moment she believed it was Chat in front of her, not the boy she'd been crushing on for an entire year. The tone was a sliver of comfort that she couldn't quite comprehend.
"W-what are you—"
"Marinette," Adrien clasped his hand over hers firmly, trying to convey his feelings through actions. "You're always putting on such a brave face for everyone else, but deep down it's hurting because you don't want to be a burden for others. You always interject yourself into someone else's problems even when you can't help, you've stood up to those who couldn't defend themselves without a second thought, you throw yourself into danger when others run away. You have such drive and tenacity to help others that you're forgetting about yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself, Marinette, it's something that should be done more often than not. And right now, I see a person extending a hand up through the darkness in search of a savior. So let me help."
"I-I'm not…the…reason I'm so…" Marinette incoherently sputtered out with a face tinted pink. There was no reason to be getting so flustered over a few confident words, especially when her mind was playing tricks into thinking he sounded like Chat. Which was totally impossible! There's no way they're one in the same! Yet…a small part of the heart thrumming within whispered a hidden truth. A truth that would alter the already confounding relationship they shared. "Y-you wouldn't understand—"
"Then explain it to me. I won't leave until you accept that reaching out a helping hand isn't damaging to your pride. Have you noticed Ladybug and Cat Noir when they're out fighting Akuma? How sometimes they need the help of their friends? If they can do it, why can't we? You're my friend, Marinette, I won't abandon you." Adrien affirmed as he pulled the broken girl before him into a tight embrace. The rain dumping over them didn't matter anymore. Nor the frigid chill seeping down to bone. All that matter was saving the life of the girl he loved, regardless of the casual pink ensemble or black and red splattered suit of Ladybug.
The darkness is overwhelming! Go, Akuma, infiltrate the heart of your next target! Make those who wronged suffer for their actions!
Marinette, wide eyed and stunned into a stupor, shakily breathed into the moist air as warmth chased away the cold. Slowly, agonizingly so, trembling arms lifted to complete the hug. The tips of her fingers had just barely grazed the sopping overshirt when a heavy fluttering reached her ears. She knew that sound anywhere. Azul orbs darted around to find the source of the fluttering. The tainted butterfly weaved and bobbed through the raindrops, heading straight towards them both. Panic turned the elated pounding against her ribs to a dead-man's drop to the twisting depths of the stomach. Adrien hadn't noticed yet as he continued his hold.
It was getting closer, too close. Tikki wasn't nearby. Cat Noir wouldn't be fast enough to stop it. Ten feet. Five feet. Three. Two. One—
"Move!"
With speed fueled by desperation, Marinette swung Adrien out of the way while simultaneously grabbing the umbrella, throwing it at the Akumatizing butterfly to slow it down. The creature merely dropped below the object headed straight for its target. Scrambling backwards until her back hit the railing, Marinette braced for the inevitable with arms up in an X.
"Marinette!" Adrien cried out once his bearings returned, the blonde watching with iron dread as an Akumatizing butterfly landed on the handmade bracelet that he'd made for her. No. No. No, no, no, no, no! "You need to resist it! Don't give in to your emotions, Marinette!"
Marinette Dupain-Cheng, I am Hawkmoth. You have been severely scorned and belittled by those around you. I offer you the chance to get revenge on the people who have wronged you.
"G-get out of my head!" Marinette grasped both sides of her head as the neon mask appeared, illuminating the darkened skies. The surges of darkness washed over in thundering pulses, drowning out any and all senses. Her mental control was slipping. If she'd been stronger…if she'd controlled her emotions better…if only she'd been—
"Marinette! Fight it! Please! Don't let Hawkmoth take control of your mind!" Adrien begged as he crawled over to his motionless friend. Bluebell eyes were stretched and quivering, as if fighting an unseen battle. He placed both hands against her face in an attempt to ground her back to reality. Hell, he was trying to keep himself under control right now with each wave of fear crashing over. If Hawkmoth gained full control over Marinette, then he'd discover who she was. He'd find out Ladybug was more intertwined into his life than previously known. Hawkmoth would win if he discovered her secret identity.
"A-Adrien…get away…" Marinette panted through the effort of fighting for control. It would soon become a fruitless struggle, but she needed to do something before succumbing. Trembling hands reached up to lightly brush over the ones cradling her face before shifting over to both earlobes. "T-take these…protect them…find Ladybug and Cat Noir…"
"Mari—"
How could you possibly expect Ladybug and Cat Noir to help you now? A failure duo of heroes, always causing more trouble than it's worth. In fact, they shall be your first target. Now…arise, Revenger!
"GO!" Marinette screamed after ripping the earrings off and shoving them at the petrified blonde. He clasped onto them then stumbled back, eyes never leaving hers. Tears slipped from bluebell eyes just as the darkness converged on the delectable charge of emotions. She mouthed I'm sorry in the last few seconds of consciousness. Adrien felt tears stinging as he stepped back. It was his fault. He needed to fix this and fast. Neither Tikki nor Plagg had returned so there was little chance of transforming to put a swift end to Revenger.
"I shall hunt down those who have scorned and jeered to have my just revenge," Revenger exclaimed boldly through the cloud of darkness. A powerful surge dissipated the cover to reveal the newly born Akuma.
Short, indigo tinted ebony locks flowed out in long waves of white with the ends just barely kissing the tops of her hips. Kind, warm azul eyes became concealed beneath thick layers of taut bandaging. Charcoal lipstick-stained scowling lips. The empty earring holes were replaced by two miniature scales of justice, each plate calibrating with every sway of her head. A long, black one shouldered dress flowed down over Revenger's body, tightly clinging to each dip and curve to rest atop bare feet. Pleats of fabric trailed down from her left bosom, following the motion of the dress to reach the fabric pooling at the bottom. A large, golden sword resided in the firm grasp of the Akuma's right hand, the left donning a large scale attached by a ring to the middle finger. Revenger tilted her head towards Adrien as he scooted further back against the wall, fists clenched tightly.
Leave the boy be, he is of no use to you. Find Cat Noir and Ladybug, bring me their Miraculous!
"Silence. You may have given me these powers, but it is up to I on how to use them. Hawkmoth, you shall get your Miraculous once my revenge has been completed. Continue to interfere with my plans and you shall be judged for your heinous crimes." Revenger spoke evenly with a twinge of threat lying underneath. The connection between her and Hawkmoth went silent, meaning the threat was made clear and concise. Satisfied his meddling was complete for the time being, the Akuma fully turned towards Adrien. "Adrien Agreste. There is no need for your judgement as your soul is pure and clean. If you do not wish to be harmed then leave."
"M-Marinette, please, I know you're in there. This isn't right." Adrien hesitantly stepped forward with a hand outstretched. Revenger remained as still as a statue even as he drew closer, the distance between them surely closing. Keeping an eye on the large sword just in case, he reached up to cradle a pale cheek. "Come back to me, Marinette. I know you've been hurt before and I'm sorry for not doing more to prevent it. I swear to you it will never happen again. I won't let my weakness dictate my actions anymore. Please don't do this. Hawkmoth is just using you to get what he wants."
"Those who have escaped the consequences of their actions must be forced to pay. I will not harm you; you have my solemn word. Please…stay safe, Adrien." Revenger spoke softer this time, almost as if Marinette was shining through the hard exterior. She lightly nuzzled his hand before stepping back and out of his grasp. Without another word, the Akuma effortlessly jumped from the balcony and flew off into the turbulent storm.
"Is that an Akuma? Where in the world did it come from? This is just what the Ladyblog needs!" A voice down below pulled Adrien from the pit of wallowing that threatened to consume him wholeheartedly, so he stumbled over to the railing to look down. Alya was standing just outside of the bakery doors with her phone in one hand, umbrella in the other. She didn't waste another second in beginning to follow the ethereal being floating through the sky.
I need to follow…I need to transform…
Adrien willed his body to do something, anything, yet he remained rooted against the railing as the rain continued to plummet down. A low ringing in his head began incrementing louder with each passing second until it turned into a roaring scream that had him doubling over from pain. Both hands locked into blonde tendrils tightly. Panic was preventing him from thinking rationally, every sense paralyzed into uselessness. Emerald eyes blurred with hot liquid. Either from the rain or tears, he wasn't sure anymore. He needed to get up, to follow Marinette, to revert the Akumtization, save the people of Paris who were about to be punished for their crimes. Yet he couldn't. The overwhelming sensation of failure dragged him down like a three-ton anchor. If he'd been stronger…faster…less of a coward—
"Kid! Get yourself together! Now's not the time to be wallowing in self-pity! You need to transform and save Marinette before someone gets hurt!" A familiar grating voice pierced through the wall of ringing pain, likely due to the fact that something smacked across his face with the force of a brick first. He fell back into the steadily growing puddle forming on the balcony with a hand to his cheek. "Get control of your breathing to stop hyperventilating, that's step one. Step two is get off your ass and move!"
I'm…hyperventilating?
"Plagg! Calm down for a moment! Yelling won't help anything right now!" Tikki interjected her other half, pushing against him in an effort to mediate Kwami and holder. Plagg let out a guttural hiss with both ears pinned flat against his head in response. The Kwami of Creation flinched back, pulling her hands to her chest out of fear.
"We ain't got time to be nice! Ladybug's been Akumatized and you're just sitting here crying! Are you seriously going to let her go? Both of you know the severity of the situation you're in! Never in all my years of helping stinking, useless humans, have I run into such an incompetent, selfish—"
"Plagg, stop!"
"Irresponsible Cat Noir!"
Adrien's eyes crossed as Plagg got right in his face, small hand stabbing into his forehead. He'd never seen him so angry before, let alone directing it at him. Sure, there were times they'd argued about something so irrelevant he couldn't even recall, but this felt like a deep hatred held for thousands of years. Tikki flew over to intervene once more, forcefully pushing the Kwami of Destruction back a good foot or so with an angry screech. The two bickered back and forth all the while Adrien stared in a stunned stupor. It wasn't until red and black filled his vision that he blinked hard enough to refocus on the situation.
"Adrien, I normally wouldn't suggest this because of the extreme risks, but we need you to become both Cat Noir and Ladybug." Tikki explained as calmly as she could though her little body was trembling with nerves. Plagg refused to meet his holder's gaze yet kept one ear faced in their direction.
"B-become…both Cat Noir and Ladybug? Is that…is that even possible?" Adrien asked in a hush tone.
"Normally, an experienced wielder of a Miraculous has the ability to mix and match artifacts in order to take down any villain threatening civilian life. Because of her title as Guardian, Marinette is able to withstand multiple Miraculous transformations within a shorter timeframe. You have already shown you can withstand two Miraculous at once, Adrien. But combining Plagg and I's power…it's a completely different level. No previous wielder has been able to successfully unify us both for more than a few seconds."
"I-is this the only option, Tikki? Can't another wielder of the Miraculous become a temporary Ladybug?"
"No. Because of the situation, entrusting my power to an inexperienced holder could be disastrous. You and Ladybug are a team. You've worked together for nearly a year now. You understand how one another thinks, breathes, and moves. The bond you share will be the key to saving Marinette and defeating Hawkmoth's plan. I need to know if you are ready to accept the risks of unifying both Plagg and myself to become the ultimate hero that Paris and Marinette need."
"…will it be enough, Tikki?" The Kwami looked at the poor, broken spirit of Cat Noir sitting before her. Despite the tears and near complete breakdown, there was still a glimmering spark of hope lurking in emerald eyes. Tikki nodded eagerly. Adrien took in a deep breath before swaying to his feet, hands clenched into fists at his side. "Tikki, Plagg."
"Ready!" Tikki chirped.
"…don't think you're off the hook for this, brat." Plagg grumbled under his breath while begrudgingly floating next to his partner with arms crossed.
"Unify!"
"Lila Rossi, show yourself! You shall not escape punishment!" Revenger called out over the streets of Paris. She had yet to find the largest thorn in her side, the filthy snake elusive and deceptive. Lila was the main priority, then on to Chloe Bourgeois. Afterwards? The citizens who escaped the iron clad grasp of the law. "Even if I have to level the city to find you, you cannot escape the injustice you have done! Surrender!"
Forget about Lila Rossi, your priorities are to gather the Miraculous of Ladybug and Cat Noir! Are you going to defy a direct order, Revenger?
"Silence! I cannot do as you ask until I satiate the incessant itch crawling on my skin. Lila Rossi must pay for her crimes of deceit, dishonesty, bullying and harassment. You shall not interfere with my plans, Hawkmoth! Even from here I can sense the amount of injustice you have laid upon this world. Shall I follow the trail to the hole you are residing in?"
…do as you wish. Do not forget your privileges can be revoked at any moment.
"I planned to from the beginning. Your hold over me means nothing. Do not bother me again." Revenger disconnected the link between them before continuing the pursuit. Street by street she scanned, following the faint yet traceable trail left by the treacherous fox. Wherever she hid it mattered not: the time for punishment was nigh. Whilst her vision was blocked it wasn't needed to trace down the largest trails of injustice. Heightened senses meant the auras could be felt along every inch of exposed skin. Some felt like rough sandpaper, others more of a whispering touch that just barely grazed the nerves.
"Revenger! Stand down and surrender before someone gets hurt!"
Revenger floated to a stop. A curious head tilt pinpointed the direction the voice came from so she twisted around to face it. Unseeing eyes narrowed beneath the wraps. There was no ill intent nor tainted soul, at least not the ones she was searching for. Interesting. "Who goes?"
"Your friendly neighborhood hero. Mister Noir Bug."
"Mister Noir Bug. Tell me, what is the purpose of you interrupting my search for those who need punishing?"
"I'm here to bring you home…Marinette."
Mister Noir Bug stood tall on the edge of the roof facing the floating Akuma with a tense posture, extending pole clenched tightly in one hand. So far Revenger didn't seem interested in fighting him, which was a good thing, because he wanted to limit the amount of physical altercations to a minimum. Once Plagg and Tiki had unified, it didn't take long to track her down floating about the streets of Paris. The incredible speed, endurance, and flexibility he had as Cat Noir appeared to have doubled after the transformation. Alongside a new costume change that mixed the best of both worlds.
His costume was still mainly black on the torso and chest, sans a neon green V tracing from shoulder to hip, yet both legs and arms had taken on a mixture of red with black spots. From wrist to claw was dipped dark, a classic symbol of his Cat Noir roots. The wrist covers had transitioned from black to neon ombre that matched the chest tracings. Black, steel toed boots had slimmed down to provide better traction and remove excess weight, green lines streaking up both sides. Shoulder pads were shortened to provide optimal flexibility, seamless scales making up the material glistening in the rain. The mask concealing his identity morphed into an ombre that began crimson around the eyes then transitioned outward to reflective ebony. His eyes remained covered with Cat Noir's night vision capabilities, enhancing the search range. Both ears perched atop messy blonde locks were lined with strips of green to match the rest of the outfit. His staff and Ladybug's yo-yo made up his artillery supply, the two weapons meant to perfectly take down an opponent. Overall, the amount of power and strength flowing through his veins was phenomenal.
"…I have no need to fight you, Mister Noir Bug, this matter does not concern you." Revenger replied evenly after a minute of calculating the situation. He was no threat to her. Yet. The sword pressed against her right palm loosened a fraction more. His aura was almost…
"You're wrong. This does concern me. I want my friend Marinette back. There's still time to stop this, Revenger, Hawkmoth—"
"Hawkmoth no longer has a say in this battle. The connection between us has severed. His antics are fruitless, to say the least. He may have given me these powers under the guise of a helping hand, yet our goals are nearly solar opposites. If I felt so inclined to," Revenger spoke with an underlying bite to each word, emphasizing the distrust for the mysterious man, while floating closer to the mysterious person. Mister Noir Bug stood his ground as the Akuma stopped within inches of him. His guard raised when the sword in her hand shifted ever so slightly. It was difficult to tell how much she could see through the bandages, though apparently every other sense had heightened in compensation. "I could locate him in mere seconds. For one who distributes such power, his aura of injustices overwhelms that of Lila Rossi and Chloe Bourgeois."
"You…you can locate Hawkmoth?" Mister Noir Bug asked, momentarily distracted by the information. If she could find Hawkmoth…this would be all over. No more Akuma, no more terrorized Parisians, no more spending nights on high alert for the next attack. No more living on edge every waking moment. "Revenger, do you understand what this means? You could easily help end the reign of terror that plagues Paris! With Hawkmoth gone, the city would be safe once more. No one would have to live wondering when the next Akuma attack will happen."
"Removing a threat such as Hawkmoth will throw the justice system out of balance. A representation as such," Revenger held up the scale hanging by her middle finger. The plates began to chime and slowly adjust, right side lowering and throwing the scale out of balance. "The left side represents good. The right side represents bad. The current status of the world is mostly even as of this moment. But when you disrupt the flow of chaos the scales become uneven. What happens when there is too much good sounds like a dream, yet with no bad left in the world, the pieces begin to corrupt after extended periods of time. What was once good becomes bad. The scale will tilt in a manner that cannot be repaired."
As if responding to Revenger's words, the lowered side of the scale shifted back up to tap against the frame. Mister Noir Bug furrowed his brows. "So, too much good in the world can inevitably sway the balance to a world with more injustice?"
"Precisely. A world with too much of one balance can affect the natural flow of energy."
Mister Noir Bug pursed his lips. It sounded too good to be true regardless of the inflated hope. He shook his head. Now wasn't the time to be focusing on that. "Revenger…what will it take for you to renounce Hawkmoth and destroy your Akumatized item? There's no need to fight. I won't hurt you."
"I will not stop until my goal has been reached. Your wishful thinking of overpowering me is almost pitiful. A dead-end dream. The scars that created this monster run far too deep to simply glaze over, Mister Noir Bug. I have made a vow not to bring harm upon you, I suggest you respect that by leaving me to my mission." Revenger began floating away from the hero until something wrapped around her abdomen tightly, pinning both arms down in the process.
"I won't let you, Marinette. You're leaving me with no choice. I will save you!" Mister Noir Bug vowed while yanking back on the yo-yo with everything he had. His heel dug into the roof as he began swinging the Akuma opposite of her headed direction. Revenger didn't fight back, just merely focused on the hero with silence. Adrien clenched his jaw tightly. He needed to grab the bracelet and smash it to release the butterfly, but how could he do that without hurting Marinette? Akuma's were tough to begin with, nearly on par to the semi-invincibility of their hero suits, but with this one being Marinette meant the most he could do was immobilize. Extending his staff, Mister Noir Bug extended both sides until they embedded into two nearby buildings before wrapping the yo-yo tightly around it. With ease he landed on the cable then sprinted up towards the Akuma with purpose.
"Futile."
Revenger tilted the sword in her hand up and with lightning speed, created enough space to free herself from the cable. The yo-yo went slack causing Mister Noir Bug to grasp onto the falling line. Without a moment to spare the Akuma resumed her journey, leaving the hero dangling between two buildings. Adrien clenched his jaw. He should've guessed that even under the influence of an Akuma, Marinette would see through most of his attempts. She was Ladybug after all. This was going to be harder than he thought. Swinging his legs back and forth to build up momentum, Mister Noir Bug swung himself free from the buildings with a hard yank on the staff. It dislodged, giving him the flexibility to chase after the Akuma.
Let's end this quickly…
Lila strolled down the streets of downtown emitting a cheerful whistle, hands twirling an umbrella to keep the rain off. Marinette Dupain-Cheng had tasted just a sliver of her plan with much more to come. Right about now Principal Damocles should be expelling that nosey nuisance for good. A few altered videos was enough to sway the mayor into siding with his spoiled brat of a daughter, something he did quite often just to appease the tantrums. Now there would be nothing left to get in between her and Adrien Agreste. Ultimately, though, the main goal was to get closer to his father, Gabriel Agreste. Working with Hawkmoth the past few months made her realize that the Miraculous he possessed wasn't being used to its full potential. She had much bigger plans for the Butterfly Miraculous, more than the famous fashion designer could ever dream of.
"I feel like something's missing. Everything went according to plan earlier, despite Chloe being an obnoxious pawn, yet I feel like I'm forgetting a crucial piece of information. Now what could it be…" Lila hummed to herself. Normally every plan was meticulously made down to the getaway, though things today went a bit askew. Was she planning on Marinette's friends being there? Yes and no.
What she wasn't expecting was the strong-headed Alya Cesaire to be more confrontational than normal. The teen always had her phone at the ready to record anything and everything as well. Considering she also ran the Ladyblog, it came as no surprise that she had her nerd of a boyfriend filming. Chloe, however, went overboard and disregarded the carefully scripted plan. The girl needed to be reeled in from the ruthlessness she often bared raw. While not imperative to the overall end result, it merely added a small speed bump in the path.
"What you have forgotten, Lila Rossi, would be me."
Lila jolted to a stop. The master manipulator could sense what was standing behind her despite the sudden chaos erupting around. A hand tightened around the umbrella handle. Surprise wasn't listed in her book of emotions, yet as she slowly turned around, Lila Rossi couldn't stop the genuine expression from donning. Revenger loomed just a few feet from the teen with a tensed posture and sword raised. The scale in her right hand began shifting, the bad side nearly slamming up against the top bar. A low humming sound emitted from the scale.
"W-well, isn't this a surprise. Marinette Dupain-Cheng, is that you? What happened for you to become Akumatized?" Lila spoke with an edge of nervousness. Hawkmoth was beginning to corrupt people left and right nowadays it seemed. And here she'd been holding up for so long. Her free hand raised to rest against the pendant resting beneath her shirt.
"Lila Rossi, your crimes are as follows: Deception, persecution, oppression, hostility, manipulation, fabrication. Your list of heinous actions goes far beyond what I have just spoken. I, Revenger, shall ensure swift justice is delivered to those who defy the balance of law." Revenger announced, shifting the sword upwards to rest mere centimeters from the tip of Lila's nose. The brunette swallowed hard.
"W-wait, we can work something out, right? Sure, things may have gotten out of hand earlier, but that doesn't mean it was done out of malice. Would the real Marinette risk harming another classmate?"
"…there is a difference between serving justice and harming another for malicious intent. Your continuous actions show you have no remorse in harming others for the sake of your own benefit. Now," Revenger swiped the sword in an upward motion, sending Lila jumping backwards and losing a few hairs in the process. The weapon readjusted to align with the heart. "Bare your sins so you may be judged!"
"No thanks!" Lila snarled while yanking on the pendant. A bright flash of orange temporarily stunned the Akuma and once it died down, the Miraculous holder disappeared to the nearest rooftop to make a run for it. The best option was to get out of sight to avoid becoming a skewered piece of meat. A fast playing of the flute had an exact copy splitting from the main body, the illusion hopping in the opposite direction as Volpina dropped to an alley below. Va te faire foutre!*
Revenger launched into the air without hesitation. The chase was on.
Mister Noir Bug heard the chaos happening before he even reached it. People were scattering in every direction screaming Akuma, panic ringing through the streets. He dropped to the ground and ran in the direction with the loudest cries. Citizens left and right scrambled for safety while towing their loved ones close behind. A crying child caught his attention, the hero pivoting towards the sound. The small girl was sitting on the ground crying as people stampeded around in panic. Vaguely, Adrien could hear someone's name being called out over the screaming. Nary a second to delay, the hero scooped up the child just as a few Parisians tripped and landed where the girl just was. He quickly found her parents before taking to the skies for a better angle, perching on a light pole with ease.
"Where did she go? Marinette couldn't have gone too far. At least nothing looks destroyed yet," Mister Noir Bug deducted after a quick scan of his surroundings. The area became cleared out pretty fast leaving downtown a ghost town. "I wish I had a better way to track her down…"
"Woah!" Mister Noir Bug nearly leapt from his skin at the abrupt shout, the blonde whirling around to see Alya peeking around a corner with phone recording. Silently cursing that this was the wrong time for her to be star struck, he braced himself for the inevitable questioning about to occur after landing on the ground. "Ladyb—no, that's not right. Cat Noir? Why do you also look like Ladybug? Ah! Is that a new costume?! Or is it a new transformation? It's totally sick! Like a perfect blend of both heroes! But…wait, where's Ladybug? Is she not with you?"
"Alya, I'm sorry. Now's not the time to be posting to the Ladyblog." Mister Noir Bug gently placed a hand over the camera lens filming him. This unification didn't need to be broadcasted across the internet for Hawkmoth to find. It'd make both him and Alya targets.
"What's going on? Who are you?"
"You can call me Mister Noir Bug. It's a long story and I don't have time to explain right now," The realization sunk in and Alya lowered the phone until it was shoved back into her jean pocket. She swallowed hard. Alya Cesaire was one of the smartest and most perceptive people he knew, so it wasn't a surprise when she asked the next question.
"Is…is Ladybug okay?"
"…no."
"Oh no. Mister Noir Bug…that Akuma I saw near the Dupain-Cheng bakery—"
"Was Marinette."
"A-are you serious? Marinette is that Akuma running around looking like an ancient statue? Oh my God…this has everything to do with what happened earlier," Alya covered her mouth with both hands. Tears welled up in diluted golden eyes. "I-I should've intervened sooner, maybe this wouldn't have happened. I knew how upset she was, yet I didn't think to…I got distracted by trying to prevent Marinette from getting expelled from school. Then Adrien called me and wanted me to meet him downstairs right before the Akuma emerged. We've all been searching for her after what Lila and Chloe did…"
"Hawkmoth is the one to blame, not you. I understand you're upset right now, Alya, but I need to follow her. Please stay out of sight in case things get messy." Adrien took a step back to launch into the skies when a hand reached out and stopped him.
"Please bring our girl back." Alya said softly, releasing her grasp on him to clench her hands together at chest level. There was something in her eyes, a hinting glint that struck the hero with an odd sensation.
Mister Noir Bug faltered in composure at the statement but ultimately nodded. It wasn't until he stopped a few roofs away that he turned back in her direction. Alya had already run off somewhere, most likely to hunt down Revenger, but the way she said it sounded like a double entendre. Did she purposely do it? Was there actually a secret meaning or was his mind playing tricks on him? Having lived under his father's rule for long enough had the teen well aware of statements with multiple meanings. Pushing it to the back of his mind for now, Mister Noir Bug extended the pole to launch deeper into the city.
Revenger trailed close behind the elusive fox with lips curled into a sneer. No matter how close she came to catching the perpetrator, she always managed to get a new wind and increase the distance between them. She didn't seem to be going anywhere specific either. It almost felt like they were wandering in a maze that had no end to it. Having had enough running around, the Akuma held up the scales of justice. A low pulsation ebbed from the scale in the direction of Volpina. After a few seconds, a massive shockwave released then smacked straight into the Miraculous holder. Instant immobilization. Yet the only thing that happened was a cloud of smoke and the Akuma alone in the air.
Fury burned through Revenger's veins. She'd been had! The damn fox had tricked her with an illusion! "Enough games! If you will not willingly reveal yourself, then I shall have the rest of Paris do it for me!"
Holding the scale high above her head, Revenger took her sword and harshly slammed it against the metal with a deafening blow. Large vibration shockwaves rocked through the air with crippling speed before raining over the city in small spears. Hundreds of tiny wavelength projectiles searched out their targets; criminals, politicians, corrupt officials, liars, cheaters, bullies. Anyone with more corruption than purity instantly became a pawn for the Akuma.
"Go! Find Lila Rossi and Chloe Bourgeois! Bring them to me!" Revenger ordered prior to turning and heading towards the Eiffel Tower. She wanted the best seat in the house for this event. The raindrops merely bounced around an invisible forcefield surrounding the Akuma for the duration of the journey. As expected, the tower was emptied of all visitors meaning peace and quiet for the moment. Perching upon the very summit of the metalwork and symbol of Paris, Revenger took a delicate seat upon the railing.
Screams could be heard throughout the streets as Akumatized victims ran amok. With each growing of her flock, it wouldn't take long to search out Lila Rossi and Chloe Bourgeois. Justice would be served soon enough.
You seemed almost troubled, Revenger. Having second thoughts?
"I warned you not to reach out again, Hawkmoth. Or do you actually want to be found?" Revenger hissed to the voice ringing in her head. Every time he spoke was like a thousand needles piercing her mind. The mastermind remained quiet for a few moments, pondering the threat to determine its authenticity.
Come now. Can't one mastermind engage in casual conversation with another? You know, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, you have quite the skillset to become a powerful Akuma. How would you feel in joining my side as say…a coconspirator?
"You want me to join you? Do not make me laugh. Somehow, despite your best efforts and immense power, you have yet to defeat Ladybug and Cat Noir once. How does it feel to lose to children? Surely it must sting. Or perhaps," Revenger paused momentarily as something whizzed past sensitive exposed skin. Someone was nearby. Friend or foe? "You are not capable of accomplishing such a task by yourself? Hence the need for stronger reinforcements. I could easily turn on you, you know. Overpower you without breaking a sweat. Would you risk such a thing? Now…if you are done spouting nonsense, I have some company to deal with.
Revenger snapped the connection once more before Hawkmoth could respond, instead sitting motionless like a statue to survey the area. Whoever was nearby didn't seem to harbor hostility, instead the conflicting feeling of concern and hesitation tingled on her tongue. Another dance across her skin and the sound of boots against metal alerted the Akuma to the presence shifting closer. She turned in that direction, keeping close tabs on every sound, movement, and sensation.
"Revenger," Ah.
"Mister Noir Bug,"
Mister Bug Noir crouched on the railing a few feet from the Aluma with hard eyes searching over the city. The screams of Parisians rang through the darkness from every direction. The few people he'd tried to save were quickly overrun by Akumatized victims, their army overwhelming the lone hero who sought safety high above. Things were spiraling out of control and the hero was beginning to wonder if it was possible to put an end to the madness before the entire city went up in flames. After a minute of thick silence between them, the hero shifted to fully sit down on the metal.
"Is this everything you wanted?" He suddenly asked with a terse tone.
"…I am doing what I must in order to—"
"That's not what I'm asking," Mister Bug Noir interjected sharply. A heavy sigh followed. "I don't care what you think Hawkmoth wants you to do. I'm asking you, Marinette, if this makes you happy. Tormenting the people of Paris. Turning family and friends against one another. Destroying the city in search of people who will never change their ways to spare you of harm. Is it worth the chaos and destruction for revenge? Is it worth people potentially losing their lives over? Is this something you would normally tolerate?"
"No." Replied the Akuma without a moment's hesitation.
"Then why? Why continue this? Why go after someone you know won't change their ways? Is it really going to make things better, Marinette?" Mister Noir Bug pressured firmly. If Marinette was still truly conscious beneath the corrupt surface then it should be possible to drag her to the light. With each distracting word, the hero scooted closer to the bracelet hanging from her wrist. All he had to do was snap it off, purify the butterfly, then revert the city back to normal. The only issue was Revenger seemed to have heightened senses without the use of sight. He focused on every minute twitch and shift of the Akuma.
"…I…do not know…" Marinette whispered into the air, head tilting back to gaze sightlessly at the stormy clouds. Tears slipped beneath the bandages, crimson like blood, and trailed down pale flesh. Mister Noir Bug carefully brushed a finger across her cheek to catch it. "This…is not what I want."
"Then let me help you. Your bracelet," He replied quietly. "It contains the butterfly. Let me purify it for you. All of this suffrage will end, Marinette. Please…let me help you."
Revenger slowly lifted the wrist that held the corrupted bracelet. A few moments of debating then the Akumatized Marinette Dupain-Cheng extended it towards the hero. Mister Noir Bug smiled gratefully while holding up his palms. His fingertips were mere seconds away from grasping the charm when a particularly loud clap of thunder roared into the night, followed quickly by a flash of blinding lightning. A flash of orange hit Mister Noir Bug's peripheral and emerald eyes quickly widened. They weren't alone anymore. Before he could react fast enough, the flash of orange slammed into him and sent him down towards the abyss beneath the tower.
A dance of tingles across bare arms had the Akuma narrowly dodging an incoming projectile, though a stinging close to a bound eye had a hand reaching up to touch it. She could no longer feel the comforting aura of the hero, his trail disappearing in the heavy rain. Revenger slipped from the tower to turn and face the attacker with sword raised high. "Your aim seems to be a little off,"
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I was aiming for that annoying mouth of yours!" Volpina sneered from atop the summit point, flute readied just below twisted lips. Luckily, the hero was now out of the picture, making the plan back on its original track. Two birds with one stone.
"…"
"What, cat got your tongue now?"
"Your illusions will not fool me twice, Volpina. You may throw hundreds at me, yet only your real body can emit the stench of corruption. Considering it is currently weaving through an alleyway seven blocks away, you are not much of a threat to me."
Volpina merely smirked. Revenger was clever, that she'd admit, though not clever enough to outsmart a fox. The illusion the Akuma had chased also held a secondary purpose; to draw Revenger to a certain area that contained a sense distorting misting system. While the rain certainly didn't help any, it was enough to cause her senses to go haywire and cross connections. Being prepared meant in every aspect. Akuma attacks included. Tracking Hawkmoth's patterns and prior Akumatized victims made it easier to booby-trap the entire city how she felt fit. It wasn't foolproof, just created to the best of her ability. Revenger suddenly latched onto the bandages constraining her eyes and with a fast yanked ripped them off in one go.
"What an annoying creature you are. So be it. I have no choice but to use my gift to end this once and for all. Gaze of Solidity."
Volpina tried to escape as Revenger slowly opened the formerly concealed eyes. Pitch blacks orbs, nearly darker than night itself, cracked open halfway. An indiscernible feeling washed over the Miraculous holder like a sheet of heavy slime, entrapping every cell in a tight lock. Only wide eyes and gaping mouth could move as the Akuma drew closer. The sword became poised at heart level. With the other hand the Akuma grasped the Miraculous of the Fox and snapped it from Volpina's neck. In a puff of smoke, Lila Rossi returned to civilian form. Chartreuse eyes narrowed at the action, lips pursing tightly together. Revenger rolled the necklace in her palm almost tenderly. The pendant became wrapped around the right wrist with ease after a few moments of studying.
"Lila Rossi, for your crimes against Marinette Dupain-Cheng and countless others, I hereby unlock the gate to your darkest sins to pass judgment. Any last words?"
"Marin-Revenger! I want to have a word with you! It's important!" A new voice distracted the Akuma enough to where the sword slipped lower in position as she looked towards the noise. Alya Cesaire stood in the framing of the maintenance door to the summit, keeled over while trying to catch her breath. She held up a finger to pause the situation until enough oxygen had filled the strained lungs. "Please, I won't take but a minute of your time. It's urgent."
"A-Alya?" Revenger breathed out until a twisted scowl quickly covered the slip. "You do not belong here. Leave. My mission—"
"Forget your mission! What's more important; getting revenge or fighting back against Hawkmoth? This isn't who you are, Marinette! And I may get my butt kicked later for saying this, right now you're no different than Hawkmoth. Are you really going to let some sleaze ball take control and force you to harm other people? I get Lila may not be the most…desirable…person to get along with, but does that make it okay to harm her? You know who you are, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, and a bully isn't one of them! So snap out of it before I come over there myself and drag you home!" Alya shouted through the heavy rain, hand pressed against her heart. Revenger felt the desire to fight draining away, washing over the sides of the tower alongside the water. Clarity began seeping through the darkness that plagued her turbulent mind. The sword slipped from her hand, clanging loudly against the metal floor.
"S-she's right, as much as I hate to admit, Marinette. Harming me won't fix things, right? So, let's just hug it out and go our separate ways for tonight." Lila stuttered out with a slur. Speaking was more difficult when you couldn't move any other part of your body. The Akuma turned a cloudy gaze back at her, analyzing.
"Release."
The freezing hold on the teen relinquished so she hit the floor hard on both knees. Alya hung her head in relief. Not wasting another second, Lila scrambled away from the Akuma. Revenger stared down at both hands with an expression of distress. She…was no different than the bullies? Was it the truth or an act of deception? No. Alya Cesaire was not one to lie about such facts. Neither was Mister Noir Bug, the truth ringing clear in his words and actions. In fact—
"Marinette, look out!"
A sharp pain erupted through Marinette's back and out of her abdomen, a glob of blood forced out of her mouth in the process. The Akuma looked down to see the very sword she'd previously held protruding from the left abdomen. Crimson coated the blade, quickly mixing with the puddles at her feet. It began soaking the floor she stood on before draining off into the abyss. The pain dropped her down to one knee as she looked back to see who attacked. Lila entered her vision. The former Miraculous holder stood panting with both hands on the hilt of the sword, twisted grin adorning the not-so-innocent face.
"Even as an Akuma you're nothing but a coward, Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Have you ever wondered what happens to an Akumatized person that gets stabbed with their own weapon? Any injuries sustained remain. Once you transform back, you'll likely bleed to death on this very rooftop. Luckily your friend over there can record your last moments on earth for the Ladyblog."
"No! Where are you, Mister Noir Bug?!" Alya screamed while shoving at a resistant Lila to get to her friend. "Marinette!"
You have failed me, Revenger. Seeing as your body is no longer strong enough to sustain one of my butterflies, I'll be taking it back.
"I-I can still…f-fight…" Revenger grunted out as the other knee gave out. It was getting hard to breathe. Vision was fading ever so slowly around the edges. Thinking had become clouded. An abrupt release of pressure enveloped the teen. Marinette slumped forward as the weapon dissolved into nothingness, the Akumatization released. A tainted butterfly lazily floated into the air yet remained close by, hovering sporadically around the teens.
"I believe this is mine," Lila stepped around to face Marinette after shoving Alya back through the maintenance door, crouching down and reaching towards the Fox Miraculous still wrapped around her wrist. A hand shot out to intercept the action. Marinette panted rapidly yet glared up at Lila with heavy venom in pained azul eyes. Her fingers dug hard into the former Miraculous holder, nails indenting into the skin.
"Someone as twisted as y-you shouldn't have a Miraculous. They…are used for the better g-good of society."
"What would you know about the Miraculous, Marinette? You're nothing more than a peon not meant to exist in this world." Lila hissed. "Hawkmoth, I know you can hear me. Akumatize me!"
…your feelings of rage will suit this butterfly well, Lila Rossi.
The Akumatized butterfly made a beeline for Lila. Just as it was going to touch the girl, a flash of red and black intercepted, the butterfly disappearing from sight. Lila gasped before backpedaling a few feet away with head swiveling. A flash of lightning illuminated the tower, showcasing a crouched figure atop the antenna. Neon green eyes flashed dangerously bright through the heavy rain. Alya burst through the door with a hand grasping onto her right shoulder. Ignoring the motionless Lila completely, the brunette grabbed onto her friend and pulled her away from the edge she was dangerously close to.
"Marinette? Can you hear me? Oh…God…okay, okay. There's no need to panic, we'll get you to a hospital. H-hey, we need to go now." Alya pressed against the wound in an attempt to stem the steady flow. Marinette yelled loudly. Her head tapped against her friend's shoulder in response to the added pain. Alya's free hand ran down raven locks in an attempt to soothe.
"This isn't over," Lila hissed then made a swift escape towards the nearest exit. The haunting green eyes…she'd seen them before during other Akuma attacks. They belonged to Cat Noir. But something felt off about him…there was more malice in his expression than the hero normally portrayed. And Alya had called him something else, Mister Noir Bug? Did that mean Ladybug and Cat Noir had become unified? Was it possible to combine the two most powerful Miraculous into something new? Deciding it was now worth it to look into, after she escaped, Lila Rossi found her escape and disappeared into the storm.
"Marinette…"
Alya looked up to see Mister Noir Bug standing there with a tortured expression, arms dangling loosely at his sides. Regret was clear as day on his face despite the mask. He fell to his knees with a strangled sob. Glancing between the blood pouring from the wound and the cracking hero of Paris, Alya Cesaire stifled the overwhelming urge to scream at the heavens above. There was time to grieve later despite the heavy wave threatening to drag her under. "H-hey, we need to go. M-Marinette hasn't lost too much b-blood. Take her t-to a hospital."
"I-I…" Mister Noir Bug stuttered out. His mind was racing, making it impossible to fully comprehend the situation at hand. All he could see was blood…so much blood everywhere… "Y-yeah…hospital…"
"Snap out of it! If you don't take her there then she's going to bleed to death! Are you going to sit there and let it happen or are you going to save Ladybug!" Alya screamed out of frustration. Adrien jerked his head up at the proclamation, eyes wide. What did she just say?
"L-Lady…bug?"
"We can talk about it later, now go!" Alya practically lifted Marinette into his arms with tears overflowing. Mister Noir Bug securely held his friend close to his chest and stood, one hand preparing to throw the yo-yo. "I'll find a way down and meet you there. Save her, Cat Noir. You're her only hope right now."
"…thank you,"
Launching himself through the streets of Paris at breakneck speed, Adrien swung his way towards the hospital. He'd have to stay in hero form in order to reverse any damage done during the fighting. Both his ring and Ladybug's earrings began beeping. Their timeframe had shortened considerably due to the strain of using both Miraculous at once. Seeing the red cross on top of the building, Mister Noir Bug swung to a stop just outside of the ER doors. A few doctors mingling outside for a smoke break startled in surprise at the sudden intrusion. Marinette moaned in pain against his chest.
"P-please, help. She's been stabbed by a…an Akuma." Mister Noir Bug rushed out as two of the doctors rushed towards him, the third running back inside calling for a gurney. He carefully laid Marinette down on the stretcher and barely had a second to say goodbye before she was carted off in a hurry.
"Hey, you good? You don't look so hot yourself, kid. Is…that her blood or yours?" A middle-aged man asked with a hand setting on Adrien's shoulder. The teen blinked his gaze away from the ER doors to look down. Through the black and red of his suit, the crimson of Marinette's blood shone through like a beacon. It coated his hands as well, slowly dripping to the damp ground. "Do you need to come in—"
"I-I'm fine," Mister Noir Bug graveled out with a step away from the man donned in a white coat. He needed to undo the damage… "P-Please…call the D-Dupain-Cheng bakery to let them know…their daughter was involved in an Akuma attack."
"Sure—hey, wait!" The doctor called out as the hero swung across the street before he could finish.
Mister Noir Bug stumbled onto the closest roof he could. A bloodied hand shakily grabbed the yo-yo, clenching it tightly. This had to reverse the damage done. It was Akuma related…it still counted, right? With teeth clenched tightly together, the yo-yo was thrown high into the rainy sky. "Miraculous Mister Noir Bug!"
Thousands of tiny ladybugs swarmed the sky in search of damage to repair. Some immediately flowed through the hospital doors and beyond where Adrien could see. He dropped to his knees with sagging shoulders. Thank God. The Miraculous would undo the damage done, yet it would never erase the memory of Marinette sitting hunched over from a gaping stab wound. The Miraculous beeped in finality and both Kwami flew out as the transformation dropped.
"You did it, Kitten! Consider me impressed with how you handled both Sugar Cube and me! Though you need to work a bit on your…coordination…hey, what's wrong with you?" Plagg's praise quickly turned to somewhat concerned as his holder slammed his bare fists against the roof. Adrien's body quivered with each sob that slipped out. The black Kwami floated in front of the teen. "H-hey, we won…"
"Plagg," Tikki spoke softly. A tiny red hand stopped him as he made to pull on saturated blonde locks. Plagg opened his mouth to reply yet his friend quickly shook her head. Both Kwami gently floated down to sit on the roof as Adrien unleashed the tidal wave of pent-up emotions.
A low thundering rolled over Paris.
Marinette stared at the empty seat of Adrien Agreste for the fifth day in a row. He'd been out sick all week and she was growing ever worried. No one could get ahold of his personal cell phone, the only notice coming from Nathalie directly to the teachers. Not even going to his estate could elicit an answer more than 'he's out sick for the week'. A sigh escaped her lips. Was he truly okay?
"Girl, that's the thousandth time you've sighed just today. We're all worried about him." Alya leaned over and nudged the ravenette in the side. Her friend merely received another sigh in response. A soft eye roll had the brunette turning her attention back to the assignment. "Hey, do you still not remember anything about the Akuma attack?"
"Hm? No, not really. I can recall waking up in the hospital, but that's it. I guess everything reset to normal after the fight." Marinette replied off-handedly. Alya had mentioned there being an attack, though what she didn't know was that the heroine remembered everything. From prior to the butterfly showing up to regaining consciousness in a hospital bed surrounded by her parents. But the one thing she couldn't recall was where Cat Noir was. No matter how hard she tried, his appearance wasn't there. "Didn't you say some different hero showed up? What did he call himself again?"
"Mister Noir Bug. Seemed like a wicked combination of both Cat Noir and Ladybug, but he didn't even stick around after the fight for an interview. Man, it would've been amazing to interview him!"
"Mister Noir Bug? Sounds like a made-up name. Are you sure the cold you got from playing in the rain didn't affect your memory?" Marinette teased lightly. She heard Alya scoff lightly with a head shake.
"Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. You should ask Adrien; I think he was nearby when the Akuma appeared. Maybe that's when the mysterious hero showed up."
"I need to take some homework over to the Agreste estate today, why don't you two come with me? Maybe if they see he actually has friends who love and care for him, they'd let us in for a visit." Nino piped in as the teacher stepped out to gather needed documents. The class began buzzing with conversation.
"That's right, Adrien wouldn't want to miss another exciting moment of History of the French Revolution. It'd probably just give him an even worse cold," Alya snorted.
"Sounds great, but I promised my parents I'd help them out at the bakery. It's been busy lately and they could use the extra hands." Marinette declined with a small head shake.
"Don't worry, we'll go cheer Adrien up without you. Better help your parents roll in the dough," Nino joked with a wiggling of eyebrows. Both Alya and Marinette groaned at the pun.
While those two diverted to their own conversation, Marinette shifted to stare out the windows. Speaking of puns, Cat Noir hadn't shown up for patrol this entire week. After leaving the hospital, the teen realized both earrings had been returned to their rightful spot, Tikki nearly slobbering everywhere while crying out of relief. Yet no Cat Noir upon returning to the field. No voicemail, no letters, no prior notice that he'd be down and out for the count. Thankfully there weren't any Akuma's roaming around, making patrols easy and short, but a heavy feeling settled in the pit of her stomach. Had something happened to him? He never missed patrol without a good reason. Pressing a curled fist against her mouth, Marinette thought up a quick prayer just as the teacher returned.
Helping her parents out in the bakery wasn't needed for as long as they said, meaning the teen was free to handle Friday evening however she wanted. Alya and Nino extended the invitation for an at-home movie night complete with junk food and scary flicks, yet Marinette declined. The worry of Cat Noir clouded every thought she had. Tikki floated around her holder with tiny hands clasped together up in the loft. The teen was just restlessly rolling around on her computer chair, mind a million miles away in thought.
"Marinette…I understand you're worried about Cat Noir, but will sitting here moping really help the situation? Maybe he's out patrolling tonight since the rain's finally let up." The Kwami suggested lightly. In truth, both she and Plagg had been communicating endlessly about their holders. Adrien wasn't really sick, though he pretended to be for the sake of skipping school. The events that transpired with the Akumatized Marinette had shocked his system pretty badly. Plagg mentioned nightmares almost every night, lack of appetite, constant irritation. He'd even confided in his Kwami that he was afraid to see Marinette again.
"Is it worth it, Tikki? I mean, he hasn't shown up in a week, there aren't any Akuma running around; what if he…just doesn't want to see me?" Marinette stopped spinning in the chair to face her Kwami.
"Nonsense! Cat Noir loves you, Marinette! He's always excited to see Ladybug in action because you're his partner. And as partners, you need to be able to efficiently communicate in order to have a stronger bond. You can't communicate if you aren't even patrolling together." Tikki rebutted quickly, much to her holder's puzzlement. Plagg informed her of the plan to patrol tonight, just to get out of the house he'd been sulking in, so both Kwami had to work together to reunite the team.
"I don't know, Tikki…how are things supposed to go back to normal when he knows who I am? Hawkmoth hasn't attacked in the last week, what if it's a trap? What if he goes after Cat Noir now? I've already royally screwed up by getting Akumatized. I've seen what happens when he gets targeted…"
"Marinette, are you going to continue to sit here and sulk or will you fulfill your duty as Ladybug? The city needs you. Cat Noir needs you. There are always risks when it comes to being a Miraculous holder, it comes with the job, but sitting here complaining about it won't ever change the outcome. You have to take the first leap to say, 'I am here!'. So," Tikki poked Marinette in the nose with eyes locked onto hers. "Get out there and protect the city! Now would be an opportune time to talk things over with Cat while Hawkmoth is laying low. Be honest. You can do this."
"Thanks, Tikki, you're the best at cheering me up." Marinette cooed before hugging the Kwami close. Tikki pecked her checked then floated around in the air.
"Besides! You also have the big ball tomorrow night! You'll have the best dress there, guaranteed!"
"Oh, that's right. I nearly forgot they postponed it due to…well, me attacking Lila. The teachers said she was out sick, but it's because I took her Miraculous back, isn't it?" Marinette asked the Kwami while reaching for the Fox Miraculous. Trixx was currently sleeping off all the excitement that'd happened the prior week. Volpina was a cruel owner who often overexerted the Miraculous in order to achieve her plans, leaving the creature starved and worn down. But despite what she endured; Marinette would do it all over again for each Kwami that needed rescuing.
"It's becoming clear that there may be a more personal link between Lila and Hawkmoth. From what you told me about your Akuma phase, Lila immediately called to be Akumatized next until Mister Noir Bug stepped in and caught it." Tikki nodded.
Marinette let out a soft snort. "Cat Noir couldn't come up with a better name than that? It sounds so dorky. Now the big question is…how much do we have to worry about Lila coming back for the Miraculous? She wasn't exactly thrilled to lose it."
"I don't believe she's a threat for now. At least, since Cat Noir took over both Miraculous. He really seemed to put fear into her to the point of her losing composure." Tikki softly landed on Marinette's extended palms, quickly latching onto the thumb for support.
"Was he…angry?"
"Very. But not at you. More so…I believe at his own failures to protect you. Cat Noir has been taking this whole situation very hard because he couldn't get there in time to save you from terrible injury. While the damage was ultimately reversed, the memory of the situation remains. Which is why it's imperative for you to do a patrol tonight."
"Alright, alright. I just hope you're right about this. Tikki, spots on!"
Cat Noir sat atop the Eiffel tower with an empty stare, legs swinging lightly over the beam he perched upon. It was the first night returning as his alter ego after nearly a week of sulking in bed. Restless nights combined with emotional turmoil had the teen completely drained, mind, soul, and body. Honestly, he didn't even want to do patrol tonight, though Plagg ultimately threatened to stuff a months' worth of Camembert cheese in every drawer unless he did. So here he was. It'd already been about half an hour of staring out over the brightly illuminated city. No Akuma sightings, robberies, or even a cat stuck up in a tree.
"I doubt Ladybug will even show up," Chat mumbled under his breath. That wasn't an interaction he wanted to deal with right now. Bullying, resuscitation, identity reveal, Akumatized, near fatal injury. It was all too much to handle in one day. His father actually allowed him to stay home on the condition he continue his piano studies. Setting up a phone to play recorded pieces still counted, right? Though it gave him the needed time to recover from the initial shock. Albeit there were other pieces to the problem that had yet to be snapped into place. "Plagg, claws in."
"What're you doing? You're supposed to wait for Ladybug," Plagg protested, whirling around to face his holder with crossed arms. This wasn't part of the plan and hell if he was going to piss off Sugar Cube again. She'd already threatened to stop talking to him for the next thousand years. He'd already witnessed it once for three days and it was the most torturous span of his lifetime.
"There's no point, Plagg, it's not like I could face her anyways. Should I just be like; 'Hey, Ladybug! I know your secret identity! You sit behind me every day in class! Oh, I also watched you be bullied and did nothing which caused you to turn into an Akuma, get stabbed by Lila Rossi, then I took your nearly lifeless body to an ER.' Yeah. That'll be a great conversation." Adrien sulked while throwing his arms over the observation deck railings.
"Kid, I don't say things like this often and it better not be repeated to anyone. Ever." Plagg started with a dramatic sigh, mentally bracing himself for what was about to come. Adrien notched an eyebrow yet remained impassive. He hated dealing with emotional shit. "Look…uh…I-I ain't good with these types of things…but…I'm—sorry."
"You're sorry?" Adrien repeated with the other brow reaching upward. Plagg was many things, apologetic not being one of them. The Kwami was always brash and straightforward, severely opinionated on everything and anything. "What are you sorry for?"
"B-because I said all those nasty things back on Marinette's balcony when you were just sitting there doing nothing while your partner became an Akuma. I…feel partially responsible for the way you are now, Adrien. I was more upset at myself for getting distracted when you needed me the most and I took it out on you. Sooooooo…sorry." Plagg rushed out quickly, turning away from his holder as little tears stung his eyes. Warmth cusped his body and pulled him against something soft. Adrien held the Kwami close to his face, a smile tracing over his lips.
"Thank you, Plagg. It means a lot to me, more than you'll ever know. I don't think I could ever be mad at you. I understand the stress you were under, not being there to help, so don't beat yourself up over it."
"Y-yeah, yeah. Enough schmoozy stuff! Now you need to deal with Ladybug and that whole fiasco. As Cat Noir. Hurry up and say the magic words so I can get on with my night," The Kwami of Destruction huffed out, tiny arms crossed over his chest. Adrien let an amused sigh slip before holding up his ring.
"Plagg, Claws Out!"
Ladybug released her yo-yo once both feet touched the cold, metal flooring of the Eiffel tower summit. Tikki suggested checking it first since it was the tallest landmark in all of Paris. An inkling itching the back of her mind said it was for another reason, though the Kwami refused to give a reasonable explanation other than Kwami intuition. With a sigh the teen sat down on the uncovered ledge. There weren't any signs of Cat Noir on the journey here, so maybe he really wasn't going to show up. She'd feel like a fool for being the only one on patrol. Curling up with knees to chest, Marinette watched over the city below with unfocused eyes.
Could she really talk to him after nearly a week of being apart? Would it be awkward with him knowing her true identity? It was an accident, but did it change his view of her? And what about his identity? Seeing as Hawkmoth had already Akumatized her, would it make going after him easier? There were too many questions that made the ravenette's head throb. Lightly whacking her head against her knee, the teenager let out a groan of frustration. All week her mind had been plagued with these questions alongside the Akumatization that haunted any dream she had. Sleep had been rough since the attack. Maybe a total of three to four hours of sleep a night was manageable before the nightmares struck. Between the Cat Blanc ones and this, Marinette wasn't sure which was worse.
"What will happen when the truth is revealed?" Marinette whispered to the air.
"M-My Lady?"
Jerking her head around at the familiar, long yearned for voice, Ladybug stared up at the shifting form of Cat Noir. He rubbed the back of his head nervously while slightly averting a neon gaze down. A jolt shocked her heart. He…actually showed up. Slowly moving to a stand, Ladybug shifted towards her partner with a hand slightly raised. Cat Noir stilled at the motion. Was…was she going to hit him for uncovering her secret identity? It was partially earned because of the promise he broke, yet it came down to a matter of saving her life. Marinette's life. Ladybug's life. His mistress in spots stopped just shy of him, the distance between them nary more than a few inches. He swallowed hard while staring into unreadable bluebell eyes. Without warning, Ladybug launched herself against him with a strangled sob.
"You stupid, stupid cat! Don't ever worry me like that again!" Ladybug tightened both arms around his neck as the tears welled over. Chat instinctively returned the embrace, nuzzling into the crook of her neck. His own tears began slipping over the mask and onto the metal landing.
"…I'm sorry, Bugaboo. I…should've told you. It's my mistake, not yours."
"I-I thought I'd lost you," Ladybug sobbed against his shoulder. The hidden fears were beginning to bubble to the surface. If he'd been Akumatized because of her… "I thought…you…"
"It's alright, M'Lady, I'm still here. Nothing happened to me." Chat soothed softly with a hand gently brushing against blue hued locks. "I should've reached out to let you know I was fine. I'm sorry for worrying you, it…it's been a rough week."
Marinette let out a choked laugh. A rough week didn't begin to describe it. "S-speaking of…you…already know all about it…don't you?"
Cat Noir tensed up as Ladybug pulled back the slightest bit to look at him. Barely concealed apprehension illuminated through shimmering bluebell eyes he adored so much. The grasp he had around her back loosened until both hands hung loosely at his sides. There didn't seem to be any anger or disappointment directed towards him, though sometimes in a panic he oversaw strong emotions. Clearing the growing lump in his neck, Chat slowly nodded with pursed lips then looked sharply to his right. Ladybug directed her gaze downward, away from his face and somewhere over his shoulder, before parting her lips to speak.
"Tikki…she told me what happened. How it was an accident. How you were just helping me and I…"
"I-I'm sorry, Ladybug, but I can't—I can't do this right now." Cat Noir interjected while shifting away to make a fast escape. He couldn't stand to hear the disappointment surely ready to come out. It was hard enough gaining courage to approach first, now his nerves were taking over and forcing an out. "I never meant…it wasn't intentional to unveil your identity. I-I mean it that no one knows, not Alya nor Nino, I never told anyone. W-well, what I meant to say is that I never planned on telling anyone because it's a secret identity that would give Hawkmoth a reason to target us both—"
"Minou," Marinette stopped his rambling with a hand grasping his, effectively stopping him from leaving. Cat Noir stopped yet made no effort to turn around and face his partner. He couldn't. Not when the built-up emotions threatened to tear down the dam carefully patched up since the attack. "Look at me, please. I'm not angry or disappointed. I understand why you did it; none of this would've happened if I hadn't been so reckless in transforming when my body couldn't handle it. But you saved me, Chat. If you hadn't…hadn't been there, we wouldn't be having this conversation. So…thank you."
"Y-you're welcome," Adrien could feel the resolve fizzling out like a firework. He didn't know what to make of the situation, not with his mind screaming at him in a thousand different directions. The warmth of Ladybug's hand grasping his anchored down the ship roiling in the rocking seas of emotion.
Marinette carefully moved to stand before him, noting the way his eyes darted off to the side to avoid her own. The turmoiled emotions beneath the black mask were beginning to spill out in the form of tears and quivering lips. A hand delicately pressed against his face, thumb wiping away the free-flowing tears. "Chat, look at me, please. I can feel your pain right now and it's overwhelming you. I don't want you to…"
"…become Akumatized?" Adrien finished brokenly.
"I…remember everything that happened last weekend," Marinette replied just above a whisper, finally drawing his eyes back towards hers. Emerald intently studied Azul as if searching for the light hidden below. They softened once the truth was laid bare before him. "About…how my out-of-control emotions turned me into an Akuma of justice. How I hunted down Lila. You encouraging me to relinquish the corruption. The sound of Alya's voice screaming into the air. Regaining the Fox Miraculous. The sword…your voice ringing through the pounding rain. How much pain filled your expression."
"Ladybug," Cat Noir started though a finger against his lips stopped him. Ladybug looked up at him with such a tender expression that his heart skipped a beat. Carefully grabbing her hand, he pressed the rest of the fingers against his lips for a feathery kiss.
"I-I put you through so much without realizing it, Minou. I shouldn't have placed such a heavy burden on your shoulders. The blame is all on me. I never want you to experience that again. Can you ever forgive me?"
"Would you do the same for me?" Chat asked lowly while repositioning her palm to rest against the heart thrumming wildly in his chest. Ladybug glanced at her hand before locking onto emerald orbs, her own heart racing just as fast. She nodded once in affirmation.
"In a heartbeat."
"Then there's nothing to forgive, M'Lady. I would sacrifice myself a thousand times in order to save you and I know you would do the same for me. This was simply saving the life of someone whom I care deeply for."
"S-so…e-even knowing…" Marinette started shakily, hand curling against Cat Noir's chest tightly. Bluebell eyes averted downward to stare at the golden bell glistening in the bright moonlight. Heat rushed over the teen as the words thickened on her tongue. "W-who I am—"
"It only means that I'll protect you twice as hard…Marinette."
A flash of green light temporarily had Marinette squinting at the brightness, free hand coming up to shield her eyes. The familiar pop and fizzle of a transformation died off into silence. Marinette hesitated. Was she ready to find out Cat Noir's identity, despite the risks that accompanied it? What would happen if she were to be Akumatized again? Would Hawkmoth use the information to go after their friends and families? Innocent civilians? Each other?
"Marinette," Cat Noir beckoned delicately, a bare hand gently grasping the wrist against her face. "Please…look at me."
"I-I…I'm afraid," Marinette screwed her eyes shut tightly as tears glistened. The memories of him were beginning to surface in a ferocious tidal wave. "T-there…d-do you remember the time…I told y-you about Cat Blanc?"
"Cat Blanc? The…Akumatized version of me? What about it?" Adrien vaguely recalled the little details she'd given him. Not that there were many Ladybug gave, more so it was hinted that revealing their identities would inevitably end up having the same effect. His partner nodded. "You aren't…are you thinking the same will happen? If you see my real identity?"
"I've seen the destruction it causes…"
"There's no way it would happen here, I won't allow it."
"How can you be so sure? All it would take is for a moment of weakness then you become Cat Blanc!"
"Mari, I'm stronger than that Cat Noir because I have you. Whatever happened in that reality was because their Cat Noir failed. He wasn't strong enough. I don't want you to worry about something that won't ever happen. I swear on my life, Iwillprotect you. I love you, Marinette."
A hand reached up to cup Marinette's cheek and she leaned into it, eyes fluttering open just a crack to let the tears out. Life felt like a dream that she didn't want to wake up from. Cat Noir closed the distance between them with an arm around the heroines back, enticing Ladybug to slip into the comforting embrace. The hand covering bluebell eyes slipped away to be interlocked with soft, gentle fingers that carried such tenderness it made her heart skip more than a beat. Rose petal tinted lips opened as if to speak, pursing together briefly before forming to the words resting on her tongue.
"Tikki, Spots Off."
Adrien watched in awe as pink enveloped Ladybug to reveal Marinette standing against him in civilian form. Tikki floated away behind him after a little wave, yet he was too mesmerized with the girl before him. After a few low blinks, Marinette took a breath in then locked eyes. Surprise flitted across her delicately freckled cheeks that burned a deeper shade of scarlet. Incoherent words filtered out between floundering lips. The blonde just waited patiently until it got to the point of Marinette hiding her face against his chest.
"M-Marinette? You okay? Are you…disappointed that it's me?" Adrien asked unsurely after a minute of the ravenette pressing against him without attempting to shift back. He nearly had to jerk his head back at the speed she looked up at him with brows knitted in disbelief.
"Disappointed? Why would I be disappointed that the greatest partner in the world is the same boy I've loved ever since we met? No…it's amazing! Completely and utterly overwhelming, unexpected, oh…my…God. Adrien? How…I never noticed the signs! I mean, both of you are complete opposites—but you're the same person so that means you aren't opposites, just the same person with two different personalities! Wait. That means…I've already kissed you!" Marinette blurted out in a stupor, embarrassment flooding an already flushed expression. She let her head drop back against Adrien's chest in an attempt to hide the ecstatic smile tugging at her lips. Every few seconds it would filter between horrified, nervous, and blissful.
Adrien pursed his lips together trying to contain the laugh building up. As soon as Marinette looked up at him in confusion to his sudden shuddering, he let loose a joyous chuckle that filled the silent Paris night. Marinette blinked a few times before beginning to join in. The duo shared a long lasting, hearty few minutes just laughing at the ridiculousness of their secret identities and the tribulations that surrounded one another. The ravenette eased back on it first, swiping a hand to catch the loose tears trailing down rubescent cheeks. When she looked up at the blonde who was attempting to calm himself down, all she could see was the pure happiness adorning his expression. It was rare for Adrien to carry such an emotion, yet Cat Noir never seemed to run out of it during patrols. She smiled lovingly.
"As much as I enjoy gross human interactions, feed me!" Plagg screeched from behind the teens, effectively ruining the moment. Tikki slapped him upside the head with a sour grimace.
"Plagg! You do this every time! Just let them enjoy their moment!" The Creation Kwami chastised to the still whining Kwami of Destruction. Her expression slipped to beyond fed up when the black cat continued to screech for food, heedless of the scolding.
"Your stomach will be the end of you, Plagg," Adrien moaned with a head tilt back to look at the fussy cat. It only resulted in a handful of blonde locks being tugged viciously, the two now in a tug-of-war for control. Tikki joined in to pry the instigator away from his holder all the while Marinette giggled, still entrapped in her partners arms.
"If you're that hungry, Plagg, there might be some leftover Camembert at the bakery. I can get you some if you'd like," Marinette kindly offered. The Kwami of Destruction halted the assault of his holder, tiny mind pondering the offer with a hand to his chin.
"How gooey is it?"
"Is two months aged good enough for you?"
"Deal!" The Kwami instantly let go of the blonde locks to fly around the ravenette with renewed vigor. He floated to a stop next to her face with a smug grin. "See, Adrien, be more like Marinette here. She actually cares about ensuring my continued existence in this human world. And her cheese is aged longer than what you get me! Nothing compares to nice, ooey, gooey aged Camembert!"
"Plagg, do you not understand how large the cheese bill is every month?" Adrien deadpanned at the little black cat. "Also, you abandoned me pretty fast there."
"You're using daddy's money, doesn't count." Plagg retorted with a shrug. "I'll abandon you every day for some baker's Camembert. It picks up the taste of yeast too."
"How much cheese?" Marinette asked carefully, afraid of the number that was going to be spoken.
"Let's just say it's enough to pay for an all-expenses trip to China and back. At least five times over."
"That much?! Plagg!"
"What can I say? I'm just a Kwami of Destruction who has a taste for the finer things in life," The little cat shrugged without a care.
"Well," Adrien began counting with his fingers, mentally calculating the cost as Marinette stared with a slack jaw. "Depends on how much I use his power. More transformations, more cheese. Actually, I'm saving a good bit this month. Thanks, Plagg, for ensuring the Agreste fortune doesn't run out any time soon."
Plagg stuck out his tongue while climbing on top of Marinette's head to join Tikki. The Guardian sighed and lightly shook her head. Sometimes the Kwami felt more like toddlers. Adrien let out an amused huff at the response. The hand he used to count quickly found its way back to the pink tinted cheek of Marinette. Wide bluebell eyes darted to his before softening, the teen leaning into the touch. Unable to resist any longer, Adrien casually leaned forward to place a tender peck against her crown.
"M'Lady, perhaps we should head out for the evening before Plagg turns into a raging little kitten. He won't transform if I don't feed him soon."
"Y-yeah, s-sure," Marinette flustered at the gesture, heat instantly returning to her face. "T-Tikki—"
"Ah, ah. I believe for tonight I shall be borrowing your adorable little Kwami," Adrien smoothly interrupted the transformation as he held out his hands for Ladybug's earrings. Marinette felt her expression go from confused to are you being serious right now in three seconds flat. Pink lips pursed in defiance.
"And what do you plan to do with them?"
"I merely wish to show you the gorgeous form I took on to save my damsel in distress. Are you telling me you don't want to see it? Isn't the curiosity gnawing away at you?" Chat's personality slipped through as he flirtatiously grabbed her hand to place a delicate kiss. Marinette notched a brow at the move, searching his face before sighing and giving in. While there was a trickling of interest on the form, he was probably going to brag about how amazing he looked. For the rest of eternity.
"Only if Tikki wants to."
"Of course, Marinette! Ready, Plagg?" Tikki trilled and launched towards Adrien excitedly.
"UGH!" The Kwami protested until his partner dragged him over to the awaiting Adrien. Marinette carefully handed over the earrings before taking a step back, arms crossed with a smile.
"Don't worry, Bugaboo, I'll be here to catch you when you faint over my good looks." Adrien winked once everything was ready. The ravenette snorted and flapped a hand for him to get on with it already. "Tikki, Plagg: Unify!"
Mister Noir Bug emerged through the light in a model pose; one hand dipping beneath his bangs as the other rested expertly against his hip. His whole body tilted backwards against the railing with ease. Between his lips was a vibrant red rose ready to be given to his fair maiden. Instead of swooning and affectionate kisses, all he heard was a mix of chortling and covered up snorts. The hero cracked an eye to see Marinette doubled over with one hand over her stomach and the other covering up the near hysterical laughs spilling out. Spitting out the rose in disappointment, Adrien relaxed his posture to switch to crossed arms and a notched brow.
"Bugaboo, you almost act like this is hilarious instead of the greatest gift you've ever received." Adrien let out an exaggerated, dramatic sigh as his partner dropped to her knees as the laughter became too much.
"I-it's…great…b-but why do your ears have little bows on them!" Marinette wheezed out, tears streaming down her beet red face. Adrien blinked in confusion before pulling out the yo-yo and popping open the mirror.
"…I think I look fabulous."
"I take it Tikki and Plagg sabotaged your little fashion show there. Though the bow on the tail is nice too," After taking a few breaths, Marinette finally composed herself enough to not laugh herself into oblivion. Adrien pouted.
"You know, I try to make a good impression on Marinette since the whole reveal thing five minutes ago, but you two make it very difficult to do so. Guess I'll just have to impress you in other ways, M'Lady." Mister Noir Bug casually strolled up to Marinette, pulled her against his chest, and leaned down close enough to count every freckle dotting her very red face.
"W-wait," The ravenette stuttered out, suddenly very aware of the lack of distance between them. Deviousness danced in emerald eyes. A smirk traced across his lips as they drew closer to an ear. Hot breath danced across the delicate skin and a shudder inevitably rippled up her spine. Both hands clutched onto him desperately.
"Hold on tight, M'Lady," Mister Noir Bug whispered before placing a feathery kiss against the tip of the now red ear.
"Wait, wh—"
Before Marinette could even comprehend the meaning of his words, they were suddenly both careening over the edge of the summit backwards. The wind whipped harshly at both clothes and skin, the only relief being Mister Noir Bug taking the brunt of the force. Of course, wearing the Miraculous suit meant he probably didn't feel a thing. Cracking open an eye; Marinette watched the world around them growing larger as Adrien laughed without a care, enjoying the thrill of the fall. With practiced ease, the hero threw out the yo-yo around a steel beam to redirect them.
"Impressed yet?" Mister Noir Bug asked his fair lady once they reached the lowest observation deck. Marinette brushed the loose strands of hair from her face with an exhilarated smile. "I'm going to take that as a yes—"
Mister Noir Bug was cut off mid-sentence as something soft pressed against his mouth. Emerald eyes widened. Marinette backed off after a few seconds while biting on one corner of her lip. The hero felt heat course through his body until it reached the tips of his ears. If he didn't know any better, steam was protruding into the Paris air. Seeing her partner incapacitated by the sudden gesture, Marinette cusped his face gently with thumbs swiping over reddened cheeks.
"You've always impressed me, Kitty," The ravenette whispered lovingly.
Adrien's hands framed Marinette's face, pulling her in to finish what she had started. She gave a small squeak of surprise though quickly settled into the sensation. It was so tender and loving, the teen had to anchor herself around his neck to stay standing.
Under the Paris moonlight, the heroes of Paris blossomed from a budding red rose.
Marinette twirled around in the dress ensuring every part swished and swayed as designed. While the finishing touch was never found, she'd decided it was perfect without. Tikki watched in awe as her holder continued to twirl around before turning to face the Kwami.
"Well? What do you think?" Marinette asked. Now that she was actually wearing her design, it just made the teen much more nervous to take it to the streets of Paris. Fashion capitol of the world meant there was a lot of competition, especially among those who had unlimited funds. While she'd done her absolute best, it would never compare to higher end brands.
"It's perfect, Marinette! Adrien's going to love it!" Tikki trilled excitedly.
Blush colored satin started at the neckline in a halter pattern that trailed down to a stop at the waist, flaring out to an A-line, tea length gown. Sparkling gems depicted as delicate flowers traced upwards from the skirt, trailing off to wrap around the top of her neck. Lighter scatterings of gems merged off from the main design to race around the sides. Shimmering layered tulle topped the skirt flare before extending no more than an inch over the edge. With every fluttering of the fabric, light caught the gems and illuminated it like a starry night. Nude low heels with straps winding up above the ankle completed the main outfit.
Blue hued raven locks were wrapped up into a donut bun with tendrils of hair framing around her face. A custom-made silk mask rested atop bluebell eyes. For the fun of it the teen placed two black dots on there, both discreetly residing near the silk ribbon that held the mask on. Ever since she and Cat Noir had unveiled their identities to one another, Marinette was a little more at ease hinting at her alter ego. Of course, only Adrien and Alya would understand the importance of those dots.
"Marinette! Alya is here! Should I send her up?" Sabine called out to her daughter from just outside of the bedroom door.
"Of course! Are you ready for this, Tikki?" Marinette whispered to the excited Kwami. Tikki nodded with hands over her mouth. What Alya didn't know was that she'd secured a picture of Mister Noir Bug, almost at his insistence, to make it be known that there was another hero protecting Paris. She was going to flip!
"Girl, are you ready for ton—oh my gosh! You. Look. STUNNING! Seriously! Who is this girl?! I need pictures ASAP!" Alya gasped loudly before grasping Marinette's hands tightly, a giant grin on her face. Marinette flushed at the compliment and laughed.
"You look amazing as well! And, speaking of pictures, Tikki?" The Guardian motioned to the Kwami holding up Marinette's phone. After learning that hers had broken due to water damage in the Seine, her parents had replaced it as an early birthday gift. "I present to you, Madame Ladyblogger, this!"
"No you didn't!" Alya screeched happily after snatching the phone from the Kwami, dancing around the room in her fitted navy floor-length gown. A fading pattern of gems started at her waist before fading off onto the skirt of the dress like falling stars. Cream gloves trailed up and over her elbows for a more elegant look. Even her mask shimmered just the barest hint to bring out diluted golden eyes. Wavy locks were pinned back into a low up-do with a simplistic silver clip holding them in place. "Where did you get this?!"
"I have my sources," Marinette winked with a tap on the side of her nose.
"I owe you! But uh…why is he posing like a model? Did Mister Noir Bug send you this directly?" Alya turned into reporter mode as she dug further into the image with scrutinizing eyes. Marinette's lips flapped before pursing together. She didn't think about that. They both knew only one person who could pose like that.
"No clue! We should save that for later though otherwise we'll be late! I just need to grab my gloves first." Marinette quickly diverted the conversation back to the big event for tonight. The matching set of opera gloves were resting neatly folded up on the desk.
"You're really going all out tonight. Must be to impress Adrien," Alya scootched on over to her BFF, nudging shoulders jokingly.
"I—"
"Girls, I want to get some pictures of you both before you head out! You're going to be late!" Sabine called from downstairs.
"Coming! Come on, we've got a dance to get to." Alya beamed while grabbing Marinette's hand, leading towards the door.
"Wait! I nearly forgot," Marinette stopped her friend before rushing back to her desk to grab a small box. Returning with both hands clasped over it, the Guardian beamed brightly at her friend. "Alya Cesaire, this is the Miraculous of the Fox which grants you the power of Illusion. You'll use it for the greater good. There is no need to return the Miraculous to me after your mission. Can I entrust this to you?"
"Trixx!" Alya breathed out as she opened the box to stare at the foxtail necklace. "But…how?"
"I may have ripped it off of Li—Volpina when I was Akumatized." Marinette admitted sheepishly. "I don't fully recall doing it, but when I came to in the hospital it was wrapped tightly around my wrist. I believe he will be happier reuniting with you than sitting around here."
"Thank you," Alya accepted the box before pulling Marinette into a tight hug. "I'll take good care of him."
After nearly two dozen photos taken by Tom and Sabine, both girls were relinquished from their cameras and escorted to the waiting van. It was a short drive to the location, yet a very nerve-wracking one for Marinette. Even though they'd just revealed their secret identities to one another last night, she didn't know how to properly act like normal again. All she would be able to see was Cat Noir over Adrien. That and the kiss they shared. A hand covered her delicately painted lips. They'd kissed! Like an actual couple! Sure, there were a few times as Ladybug she'd kissed Cat Noir only to save him from an Akuma's control, but this was…real. Not as their alter egos. As civilians. Well, to be fair, Mister Noir Bug didn't really count because he was using both the Ladybug and Cat Noir Miraculous. Still…
"Thinking about Adrien?"
"W-what?" Marinette sputtered out once the dreaming came to an end. Alya was giving a Chesire grin. "N-no, nothing like that! Just…nervous about what people will think about my dress."
"Pssh! You're going to become Paris' next hit designer, probably bigger than Gabriel Agreste, yet that's what you're worried about? It's not going to matter what Chloe or Lila says. All that matters is that you love it and that your friends get to shower you with compliments. Though I'm going to make sure my camera is at the ready for when Adrien swoons over your beauty."
"We're here. Tom, get the door for them, will you?" Sabine announced before quickly patting her husband on the shoulder. Within moments the car door was opening, and a hand extended towards Alya who was seated closest. She thanked him graciously before stepping back to allow Marinette to exit. The teen could already see people outside mingling around, their eyes instantly darting to the newcomers in curiosity.
"Be brave, baguette. Nothing matters more than how you feel." Tom encouraged his daughter after helping her out of the vehicle. He placed a quick peck on her head before releasing his grasp. Both parents stood together proudly, waving the children off once more.
"Look, there's Nino! I thought Adrien was supposed to be with him. Maybe he stepped away for a minute. Nino!" Alya called out to her boyfriend, frantically waving her arm to catch his attention. Both girls made their way over to him.
"Wow! Look at these beautiful ladies that get to be my company tonight! I must be the luckiest man on earth," Nino swiped at his eyes with a small sniffle.
"You only get one for this fine evening. Where's Adrien? Wasn't he already with you?" Alya blushed as Nino took one gloved hand and gently pressed it against his lips.
"Hm? Oh. He said he'd catch up in a bit, something about wanting to avoid the crowds for a bit. Think he's in the courtyard."
"I'll go find him, why don't you two head in and enjoy the night?" Marinette quickly offered with hands layering atop the dress. Alya nodded. Before Nino could question it, his girlfriend whisked him up the stairs towards the dance floor.
Once past the idling classmates and chaperones, Marinette casually made her way down the hallway that led to the courtyard. Apprehension was growing within. Was something wrong with Adrien? Isolating himself meant he was bothered. His father tended to be the main source of that, but…was he upset with how things went last night? From a Guardian perspective it wasn't an ideal situation with their identity reveals. Although Cat Noir accidentally unveiled hers, him revealing his civilian form meant they were both in serious risk of becoming targets for Hawkmoth. Bunnix hadn't arrived yet so maybe that meant things would work out fine.
Voices reached Marinette's ears, so she slowed down when nearing a corner. Cautiously, she peeked around the wall. Adrien was standing there in a guarded stance as Chloe and Lila practically cornered him. Azul eyes narrowed. Lila still had the gall to show up after everything? Maybe that's why Cha—Adrien was so on guard right now. If she had to, Ladybug would make an appearance to save him. It was risky, yes, considering there was a strong possibility that Lila was directly connected to Hawkmoth.
"What are you doing all alone out here, Adrien? Shouldn't you be dancing inside?" Lila asked sweetly. She donned a cream-colored silk dress that just barely grazed the floor. The back had a deep cut that showed off the curve of her spine and sun-kissed skin. Brunette locks were swaying freely though had soft curls.
"Adrikins, you owe me a dance! Every school formal there is, you've promised to share a dance with me." Chloe reminded in a chiding tone, delicately painted nail pointing into his chest. An extravagant golden dress clung tightly to her torso before flaring out into a ballgown style. Diamonds littered nearly half of the gown starting from the straps to most of the way down the skirt. Blonde locks were curled and twisted up into a fancy up-do with matching diamond earrings. The amount of money she flaunted so casually nearly had Marinette feeling faint.
"I'm sorry ladies, right now isn't a good time. I'm waiting for someone. If you'll excuse me," Adrien dipped his head in apology before turning around to continue heading towards the courtyard. Lila shot out a hand to stop him.
"Don't tell me; you're waiting for Marinette? Unfortunately, she won't be showing up tonight, Adrien. Her permission slip never got submitted in time. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news." The sickening lie spewing from the brunette's mouth nearly had Marinette stomping over there and yanking on the curled locks. A heavy breath calmed the ebbing wave of emotion for the time being.
"What are you talking about, Lila? We've already cleared that issue up with Principal Damocles. Everything is in order."
"Oh? Forgive me, I must have been misinformed regarding that matter. I try my best as class representative to ensure the happiness of all my classmates." Lila responded easily, switching to innocent in a second flat.
"Besides, why would you be meeting with Dupain-Cheng? A baker's girl can't afford a nice enough dress to show up here!" Chloe tittered mockingly.
"Enough. I've already excused myself once, please do not make me do it again." Adrien interjected with a firm tone. Both girls raised their eyebrows in surprise, jaws popping open. Without another word, the blonde turned and continued on his way to the courtyard. Marinette placed a hand over her heart as it fluttered. He could handle himself; he was Cat Noir after all. Now the big question was how to go after him without running into those two.
"Seriously?! Adrikins!" Chloe called after him with a childish foot stomp. Lila merely pivoted on her heel and began walking in the direction of Marinette. "Wait, where are you going now? This whole thing was your idea! Fix it!"
"I already have a plan to fix this. All we need to do is find Marinette. As long as neither of them meet, everything will correct itself. Quit throwing a tantrum and let's go." Lila coldly scolded the bratty princess.
Marinette yanked her head back around the corner. Oh no. There weren't many places around to hide. She could access the courtyard via another route though the two would see her walking through the windows. Grasping the skirt tightly, the ravenette made the choice to run for it and pray there was a place to hide. Heels clacked against the marble flooring loudly in the empty hallway, instantly giving away her location. It took mere seconds for voices to begin calling out her name. Glancing back, Marinette noticed Lila sprinting at the teen with a twisted face. Chloe obviously lagged behind due to not being able to run in her dress or the ridiculously high heels that were probably beneath.
"Marinette, let's have a little chat!" Lila called out in a sweet tone. There was nothing sweet about that girl and Marinette knew it firsthand.
"Seriously?! After you stabbed me during my Akumatization, now you want to have a chat?" The heroine griped under her breath while picking up speed. It would be game over if Lila caught her. Ditching her heels was an option, though it would take too long to remove the silken straps wrapping up her leg.
"Marinette, it'd be risky trying to transform with all of these people around. It's best just to hide," Tikki said after poking her head out of the small matching satchel Marinette made to carry her belongings.
"I know, but I need to have a backup plan! I'm pretty sure Lila is still pissed about me taking her Miraculous!" Marinette panted back. She rounded the corner with such speed that a couple standing there making out didn't jolt until she was already a good fifteen feet away. "I was Marinette when that happened, I can't blame it on Revenger or Ladybug!"
Just one more hallway to traverse down then she'd be at the courtyard. What she wasn't planning on, though, was the fact that heels and Marinette Dupain-Cheng don't mix well. Near the corner, her ankle gave out. The teen hit the floor hard and slid a few feet before coming to a stop against the far wall. Her body ached fiercely as she pushed herself up. Lila was closing in faster now. Pain throbbed sharply as Marinette pushed herself to her knees then to a stand while ignoring the fiery burn. The wall acted as a crutch that helped her slowly move closer to a door.
"I just want to talk, nothing more." Lila called out while slowing to a fast stroll. Chartreuse eyes were bright with anger as they narrowed at the teen. She had more than one bone to pick with her classmate, involving the return of that necklace. Even if she had to burn all of Paris down for its return, Lila Rossi was going to get her Miraculous back.
"I'm in a bit of a hurry! Maybe next time!" Marinette called back through gritted teeth. Her hand finally reached the doorknob to the closest room and jerked it to the right. It opened with ease, so she slipped into the room and slammed the door shut, quickly fumbling for the lock. Luckily it had a deadbolt that clicked loudly in confirmation.
"You can't stay in there forever, Dupain-Cheng. At some point you're going to have to come out of there!" Lila hissed through the crack after slamming a fist against the door. After a few tense moments, the sound of her heels clicking away had Marinette breathing a sigh of relief.
"Marinette, are you okay? That was a hard fall," Tikki worriedly floated up to her holder with hands twisting together.
"I think my ankle is twisted pretty bad. Everything is going to hurt tomorrow for sure." After doing a mental check over the aching body, Marinette sighed heavily. There went the excitement already. And her chance to dance with Adrien. "We'll have to stick it out for a bit to make sure she actually left. Lila seemed really mad."
"It seems to do with taking her Miraculous. Volpina had it for a while now and without Trixx, she seems to be at a big disadvantage. It would be a good idea to avoid her completely for the time." The Kwami flew back towards the door in search of something Marinette couldn't see in the dark room. After a moment, the lights flicked on. An unoccupied office. Hopping over to the desk, the teen settled herself on top to get off the throbbing ankle. "Since Adrien is here, I can go search for him. That way he can help you, Marinette. Oh! Your glove!"
Marinette glanced down at the gloved appendage, instantly frowning and furrowing her brows. Blood was beginning to soak through, so she peeled off the material. Multiple abrasions along the side of her arm were split open and bleeding lightly. Looking for something to staunch the flow, a roll of paper towels became the solution. While it wasn't ideal, keeping it wrapped up would at least prevent it from getting dirtier. "There's no getting the blood out of those gloves now. Did I get any on my dress, Tikki?"
"It doesn't appear so," Tikki thoroughly investigated the dress before stopping on the left side. "Oh…Marinette…"
"What? Did something tear?" Marinette twisted around to investigate.
"I'm sorry, the pretty fabric on top has a big split from where you fell. Can you fix it?" The Kwami reported sadly, tiny hands holding up the large split. Her holder had worked so hard on creating the perfect dress and now it was already damaged. Marinette grasped the material and studied it for a moment.
"That's alright, tulle is very easy to tear. I can just patch the top layer so the bottom one remains intact. It may look a little off, but at this point I won't be dancing regardless." Tikki nodded though her attention drifted towards the corner of the room. Curious, Marinette watched the Kwami stare for at least fifteen seconds. Just before she could ask what was wrong, the red creature turned back to her with a grin.
"Plagg said he'll make sure Adrien rescues you, so there's no need to worry about anything."
"Wait, you two can communicate? Since when?" Marinette asked incredulously. Being Guardian of the Miraculous meant knowing everything there was about the Kwami, yet this fact slipped beyond her grasp.
"Since Plagg and I are the original Kwami, we've had a special bond for thousands of years. Normally, communications are better once our holders are transformed. But in emergencies such as this, when we're close enough to sense one another, we can directly communicate." Tikki explained to her baffled holder. Normally the holders never bothered to figure out the two Kwami had special capabilities, yet Marinette already knew due to falling unconscious while suited up. "You may not remember, but I did something similar last week when you overexerted yourself trying to climb the Eiffel tower. It does take a good amount of energy from us, which is why it's only done in emergency situations."
"Was that how Cat Noir found me so fast?" Marinette asked softly. Tikki affirmed with quick head nods.
"I was able to sense Plagg just barely within range and alerted him."
"You're so considerate, Tikki, thank you." Marinette brought the Kwami to her face and gave her a quick peck on the head. A soft knocking on the door had the teen on alert, ready to barricade the room if need be. Tikki flew from her grasp and partially phased through the door before moving down to the deadbolt.
"Your Cat in shining armor has arrived, Marinette." Tikki announced warmly while undoing the deadbolt.
The door slowly opened to reveal a mildly concerned Adrien and Plagg who quickly entered the room. Once locked, the former swiftly closed the distance and embraced Marinette.
"Are you alright? Plagg said Tikki sent a message saying you were hiding from Lila. I didn't realize they were going to go after you, Marinette. I'm sorry. I should've been there to protect you." Adrien murmured against her ear.
"I-it's alright, Adrien. In all honesty…I may have witnessed the exchange you had with Chloe and Lila. I was looking for you since Nino mentioned you stepping away from the crowd. I was around the corner. Apparently I wasn't fast enough to get away from Lila. She's most likely looking for the Fox Miraculous." Marinette replied while hugging him back. It was so warm and caring.
"Is that why she's going after you?" Adrien asked in alarm once he pulled back. Emerald eyes were filled with concern as they took in her disheveled appearance. "Are you injured? You're missing a glove."
"Ah, I sprained my ankle pretty badly when I was trying to run around a corner. My arm got torn up from hitting the floor, but the paper towels seem to be holding for now."
"Let me take a look at it," Adrien offered gently. With a slow nod Marinette showed him the arm wound she'd sustained. The frown on his face deepened as his fingers traced around the bleeding edges. "It doesn't seem to be too serious, though it'll need to be treated to prevent infection. What about your ankle?"
"Probably just a bad sprain, but I can feel it swelling already." Marinette sighed while carefully lifting her leg to show. She made it halfway up before realizing Adrien had dropped down to one knee for a better look. Heat burned across both cheeks as soon as his skin touched hers. So close!
"I'm going to take your shoe off, okay? You need to give the swelling some room to breathe. We should probably find you some ice as well—are you feeling alright? Your face is really red." The blonde suddenly ask the moment he looked up. His lady was sitting with a heavy blush trailing from ear to ear, bright eyes glancing off to the side. Emerald eyes blinked a few times before a Cat Noir smirk tugged his lips upward. This was going to be fun. "M'Lady, are you feeling rather flustered due to my doting hands? Surely the great Ladybug can tell pure intentions from impure. I merely wish to ensure your health and safety."
"S-stupid cat," Came the stuttering reply. Adrien merely chuckled and began unwrapping the shoe. Already the area was turning red with inflammation. Once he removed the heel and gently set it aside, both hands traced over the area to feel the extent of the injury. It didn't seem to be too bad, more like a mild sprain. Considering she was running when it happened, it was more trauma than a normal sprain.
"You should be fine in a few days which means no patrols. Can't have my dear Ladybug injuring herself further."
"What? No way! Hawkmoth could come back at any second! He hasn't been seen this entire week, but that doesn't mean we can relax. We need to do nightly patrols, expand the search areas, stay up all night if we have to." Marinette retorted in a flash.
"M'Lady," Adrien said quietly. Marinette looked at him questioningly until their eyes met. Chat wasn't joking in the slightest, emerald eyes filled with concern. "I'm not going to let you injure yourself more for the sake of protecting Paris. I understand the weight of your title, but that doesn't mean I'll allow you to be reckless. If you're injured, I will take over to protect the city. Seeing you like this now already hurts me."
"Adrien," Marinette breathed. The sincerity of his words struck home and almost numbly; the heroine quickly nodded a few times. "…alright. Only so you don't worry about me so much."
"Many thanks, Bugaboo." Adrien smiled prior to place a delicate kiss against the sprain. Steam practically billowed from the bun nestled atop her head.
"A-anyways," Marinette quickly redirected as he stood. Was Adrien becoming bolder with his romantic gestures because of the identity reveal? Or had he always been this way? "We should find a way out of here. I'm sure Lila is going to be waiting for me to leave at some point. Alya and Nino will get worried too."
"I didn't see anyone else in the hallway so we might be clear to make a break for it. If not, there's always your dashing Chat of the night."
"Adrien, your Cat Noir is showing."
"Is it now? I merely figured this was my natural self, Marinette. I know you love me for my witty charm, sense of humor, and hopeless romantic gestures." Adrien shifted close enough to place both hands on the desk, trapping Marinette.
"Might be a little overkill on the first day, don't you think?" Marinette murmured back while tilting her head back to meet his gaze. Despite sitting on the desk, Adrien still towered over her. A cheeky smile overtook his face.
"My Lady," Adrien started lowly, emerald eyes boring into bluebell. They were merely inches apart and growing ever closer, slowly. Tantalizing so. "I've been head over heels in love with you for a year now. The fact that you are Ladybug only means there's more of you to love. We've hung out together as civilians, comforted one another as heroes, risked our lives for each other. Told each other secrets that no one else could dare to know or understand. So no. I don't think this is overkill. I don't want to waste another moment holding back my feelings for you, Marinette. I'm going to show you every chance I get that…I love you."
"I love you too…Chaton."
Va te faire foutre!* — Essentially means go fuck yourself in French LOL. A very Lila thing to do. Thanks for reading! This was meant to be a short one-shot yet somehow turned into a very lengthy story. I feel the ending speaks for itself, no need to further drag out what was happening. You guys can imagine that.
