Hello everyone, I'm back with the new chapter this being longer than the previous one.

Hope you enjoy it. :)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter 2: The Border

Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico

30th May 1985

The two emerged from the dreaded facility disguised as a hospital, the letters of Transigen illuminating the night, into the parking lot.

Gabriela Lopez searched for her fellow nurses, scanning the said parking lot for them. The plan was going smoothly so far. Befriending the guards and the doctors was effortless since every single one of them thought they were too poor and stupid to understand.

Yes, they were poor but they were not stupid. For years, they watched as those people-

No.

Those monsters performed experiments on children born to poor Mexican girls, all of them so desperate for money that they were willing to let themselves be impregnated with unknown seed and injected with an unknown substance, in the name of so-called pediatric cancer research. And those few who changed their minds once they gave birth were swiftly... murdered.

God's children which they grew to love as their own, children who either weren't strong enough to endure brutal operations and tests performed on them or ended their own lives when they realized that this was their future.

Laura was the only one who remained, who endured the hellish torture that was inflicted on her. They needed to act now otherwise Laura, sweet little Laura who endured far too much a child her age should endure would be turned into an inhuman monster and weapon. And only God knows what kinda nightmare would be unleashed into the world.

But Laura wasn't the only one that was left in that facility. Something was being built inside the facility, deeper even than the cells where the children were being held. Something unnatural, something-

HOOONK

Both heads turned towards the sound of a black limousine with tinted windows approaching them. Laura stiffened.

"It's okay mijita this is our getaway ride." Gabriela said soothingly to Laura who was agitated ever since they left her cell. Laura relaxed and replaced the look on her face from cautious to curious. A brilliant part on their side, they would be looking for some cheap car, not an expensive-looking limo. The price for it was very high but they had their ways.

The driver's window lowered revealing the faces of two nurses, Vanessa and Camilla.

"Get in." said Vanessa urgently.

Entering the limo in the back they were greeted by one more nurse, Claudia, and settled in. The limo took off at an urgent speed, leaving the parking lot with no need to raise the ramp at the security checkpoint because it was already raised. Within a minute they were in the city of Juarez heading towards the border.

"Was there any trouble?" asked Claudia.

"No, every single one of them was asleep." replied Gabriela.

"Oh thank God" Camilla crossed herself "we were all thinking that there were some pendejos who weren't."

"We managed to shut the cameras as well as the alarm system and contact with the others," Claudia explained, "but it won't be long until they figure out something is wrong."

"We also managed to get papers." Camilla pointed at the back of the limo "files, test results, financial data, everything that can incriminate them."

"I hope it's enough." added Vanessa warily. "Otherwise this whole thing is all for nothing."

"It won't be," Gabriela responded, "because we have this."

She put the blue rucksack on her knees and pulled out a small video camera along with several cassettes. Everyone stared at it, the nurses in grim understanding and Laura in childish interest.

"Only a year's worth, right?" asked Claudia.

"Right."

Gabriela wished she thought of that idea earlier, that they thought of an escape plan earlier; not only for Laura but also for the other children. Her eyes watered by the very thought but she refused to cry. Right now all that mattered was Laura.

They were currently traveling down the Eje Vian Juan Gabriel road that was leading towards the border with America.

"Passports?" questioned Gabriela.

"Here."

Out of her own rucksack, Claudia pulled five passports. She handed them the passports "A mother, her daughter, and her sisters are visiting their extended family and staying over for a month." she explained. They went through the story several times, not exactly believable traveling inside the limo but it will do.

"This is it, I hope everything goes well." Claudia muttered a quick prayer.

"Are you sure that everyone was asleep?" questioned Camilla.

Gabriela was about to answer but a low-sounding growl from Laura stopped her. Looking in the direction where Laura narrowed eyes glared she saw the reason.

"Vanessa, speed up." Gabriela said urgently.

"What? Why?"

"Shit!" exclaimed Camilla again this time in fear.

Behind them, on the road, several black SUVs were gaining on them. The nurses knew all too well to whom did the vehicles belong.

Vanessa wasted no time. She stepped on the gas pedal and the limo took off even faster going through Eje Vian Juan Gabriel.

"How did they know?" asked a shocked Claudia "We shut down the cameras, how could they possibly know that we're in a limousine!?"

"For now it doesn't matter," Gabriela said, „now we must reach El Paso and get Laura to safety."

"I can fight."

It was the first words that Laura uttered ever since they left the dreaded facility. She stared deeply into Gabriela's eyes. And she was right; she can fight, better than most, far better.

"I know you can but right now-"

Gabriela didn't get to finish her sentence because one of the SUVs rammed the limo from the right side. The side window glass shattered. Everyone inside (except Laura) yelped in surprise and shock as the vehicle continued to show the limo to the side hoping to crash.

"Dios mío." exclaimed Camilla. Vanessa growled in the front trying to ram the car back. For several moments both the limo and the jeep tried to push each other from the road. Then the jeep pulled back in a second attempt to crash the limo. Everyone prepared for an impact.

But what happened next shocked them even further than the sudden crash attempt.

Just as the vehicle was about to smash the limousine in another attempt to crash them Laura crouched on all fours and leaped from her seat through the shattered glass, breaking it very easily, and into the SUV.

Gabriela could hear from it shrieks and screams mixed with shock and terror. Turning away from the limo sharply the SUV started swerving wildly left and right, its driver attempting in vain to gain control while the passengers attempted to fend off a surprise assailant.

After several tense seconds of inside struggle, the car tipped over and crashed at the side of the road, ramming right at the pole of an enormous billboard ad for a new Coca-cola.

Vanessa turned the limo towards the billboard just as another two jeeps stopped near the crashed vehicle. Nine men, all mercenaries armed to the teeth, emerged from the cars towards the vehicle.

Gabriela growled. No way in hell she gonna let these monsters take Laura away. Her fellow nurses thought the same.

Pulling very quickly from their individual backpacks small revolvers, they exited the limo and prepared for a shootout with the mercenaries. They were noticed by the said mercenaries, turning around and pointing their guns at them.

However just about as the shootout was going to occur, everyone turned towards a back door of the crashed SUV opening. From it, Laura emerged.

With the way her clothes were covered in blood, her claws dripping with said blood, and her narrowed predatory eyes she looked as if she emerged from some kinda horror movie.

The mercenaries wasted no time turning their guns at Laura, who herself wasted no time hurling herself with a screech at the nearest mercenary, her claws slashing his throat.

Using the mercenary falling body as a springboard she launched herself onto her next victim, this time her claws piercing the man's head.

Gabriela and her fellow nurses watched in horrified awe as Laura became a whirling dervish of death, mercenaries falling left and right, limbs and weapons being sliced from her attackers like butter, standing no chance against a berserking child. Not even slowing down after she managed to get shot in the arm, Laura gutted the responsible man and then turned around 180 style as she slashed the knees of the nearest guy.

When the man fell she used the opportunity to stab him through his low jaw, her claws emerging on the top.

"Should we do something?" Camilla asked, disturbed by the carnage.

"Vanessa, start the limousine," advised Gabriela "there a definitely more coming."

Vanessa nodded and went back to start the car. Gabriela turned her head towards the slaughter that was occurring and saw two men grab Laura from behind who restrained her and started to drag her away.

Gabriela, Camilla, and Claudia were just about to shoot them but then—

SNIKT

Two-foot claws emerged from her feet dragging to the ground and suddenly with a double scissor kick she stabs one mercenary in the thigh and the other in the throat, her foot claw sticking out the back of his neck.

The three remaining armed men raised their guns preparing to shoot Laura. However, they were stopped by the nurses who responded by shooting them from behind. Two mercenaries fell immediately while the last, startled by the fact that he even forgot the nurses were there, was swiftly stabbed in the back by Laura, not even having a chance to fight back.

"Vamos Laura, Vamos!" called Claudia.

Laura finished stabbing the last man and quickly joined in the others going back inside the limousine. Vanessa stepped on the gas pedal and they took off.

"Mijita are you alright?" asked Gabriela.

Laura responded simply by nodding and then by nonchalantly sucking the bullet out of her arm and spitting it on the seat.

Gabriela and Claudia examined Laura all over, despite knowing she can fully heal, while Vanessa and Camilla were arguing in the front.

"Are you insane?!" asked Camilla.

"Look, either we escape or we get captured there is no in-between." Vanessa stated.

Gabriela was about to ask what are they talking about when she spotted several more jeeps approaching, hot in pursuit.

"Está loca!" Camilla proclaimed. She turned back addressing the rest of the passengers.

"She's suggesting that we simply speed up through the border!"

"What!?" exclaimed Claudia

In front of them, the US-Mexico border checkpoint was becoming more visible with only several cars being present due to being midnight.

Gabriela looked at the checkpoint, it was getting closer.

Glanced at pursuing vehicles.

And closer.

And finally stared at Laura who stared back.

"Whatever you are planning," she addressed Vanessa "do it."

Vanessa affirmed this by reaching the maximum speed of the limo. The border guards saw this and in panic moved out of the way of the approaching limo. Breaking through the lowered ramp, they left Juarez, crossing the bridge leading them to El Paso, to America.

"Now we only need to go through-" Vanessa started but was interrupted by panicking Camilla.

"VANESSA, LOOK OUT-"

The jeeps approached them from both sides, the American checkpoint getting closer.

"Vanessa!" warned Gabriela.

Vanessa slammed at the brake pedal. Every jerked forward and back as the jeeps speed forward and suddenly stopped, just a few yards away from the checkpoint. The US customs agents, who saw the whole thing go down, approached the vehicles quickly and prevented them from continued pursuit as there were forced to turn off their engines and exit the cars with their hands raised up.

"Get ready." Vanessa warned.

Suddenly the limo speeds off, dodging everyone on the bridge, ramming through the security ramp, and finally entering El Paso. The nurses cheered.

"Were in!" Claudia whooped, pumping her fist in the air.

"Yes!" Camilla exclaimed.

Gabriela was sure she was grinning like an idiot. She focused on Laura who had an ecstatic and hopeful look on her face. This is it, they will escape this nightmare and find a life worth living.

"See" Vanessa proclaimed, "I told you that we would make, I-

POOP

The limo swerved wildly to the right, preventing Vanessa from finishing her sentence and causing everyone on the inside to grab on for their dear life. She tried to gain control in vain. The limousine crashed at the side of the road.

"EVERYONE OUT" Gabriela shouted "apúrate, apúrate."

They all went outside, exiting the limo rapidly.

"What happened," Claudia coughed "why did we crash?"

"That." answered Vanessa pointing at the slashed tires.

"Roadblock," Camilla announced "probably tire killers, spikes."

The sound of approaching police vehicles made them turn around. Vanessa, Claudia, and Camilla exchanged looks and then stared at Gabriela.

"What, what is it?" questioned Gabriela.

"You go, well hold them off." Vanessa started.

"Look," Camilla continued before Gabriela could say anything, "all that matters is getting Laura to safety."

"Yeah, we all knew that there was a possibility of failure. But," Claudia glanced at Laura whose eyes were shining with unshed tears "the risk is worth it."

Laura responded by hugging Claudia in a rare display of physical affection. Vanessa, Camilla, and Gabriela joined in the hug for a few seconds.

After pulling out of the mass hug, not enough time, they pulled their money from their backpacks, gave it to Gabriela while also giving her one small box containing the most important files on Transigen.

"Vanessa, Camilla, Claudia," Gabriela addressed her fellow nurses, her hermanas, one last time "que Dios te bendiga."

She grabbed Laura's hand and they ran off into the night, into El Paso.

Well, that's it for the second chapter. Perhaps you noticed in the past few days that I have been editing a few things from the previous chapter as well as some tags. This will be happening a lot in case I spot some mistake and try to fix it. Several notes BTW:

1. We gained some insight from Gabriela while adding some OC nurse characters because I felt the need to show off that Gabriela wasn't the only nurse on-screen who cared for Laura (yes I am aware there were other nurses in the movie who assisted the children in escape but those were shown only for a few seconds).

2. Laura's combat skills are shown here and I promise you in future chapters I will show off more of her abilities.

3. I'm not familiar with the way how customs deal with people who try to violently cross the security checkpoint so this was written for the sake of the story.

4. And for the final note, there will be a time skip. I know you want to see Laura being a badass Wolverine and I assure you there will be plenty of it in this story

That's it yall, see you soon ;)
