The Chronicles of Sir William
Ch 19
It's a Wonderful Strife
OPEN ON:
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, DARK ROOM
Hunter enters a musty, cob-web filled room as he snoops
around the halls of the observatory. The walls are piled
high with instruments and ornaments. In the back of the
room, Hunter spots a large object draped with a black
sheet.
He throws off the sheet to discover an array of polished
mirrors held in a complex arrangement of mechanical
brackets. One of the mirrors begins to glow, flickering on
like an old television set.
INT. THE OWL HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
A scene of the Owl House shown in black-and-white appears
in the mirror pane. William comes through the front door,
dressed in a business suit and carrying a briefcase.
WILLIAM
Luzy! I'm home!
Luz comes into the room, dressed as a 50's house-frau.
LUZY
(nervous)
Now, hubby. Try not to be upset...
WILLIAM
Oh, what now?!
He turns and sees all the living room furniture has been
turned into horrific monstrosities.
WILLIAM (cont'd)
(stern)
Luzy...you've got some 'splainin to
do!
A studio audience howls with laughter as a logo appears
across the screen: I LOVE LUZY.
INT. DARK ROOM
HUNTER
(chuckling)
What is this thing?
THE OBSERVER
None of your concern. That's what it
is...
Hunter flinches at seeing the Observer appear behind him.
She flings the black tarp over the mirror and floats out of
the room. He sheepishly follows.
HUNTER
I'm sorry, I was just-
THE OBSERVER
-Snooping. But I should've guessed.
I find curiosity an endearing trait
in my apprentices.
Hunter perks up a bit.
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, TOWER - DAY
They arrive in an observatory dome, where the Observer
casually stargazes while conversing with Hunter.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
The instrument you found can show
you alternate realities. I would
often use it to parse out the many
aftermaths of my plans.
HUNTER
But, not anymore? It looks like it
hasn't been used in-
THE OBSERVER
(uninterested)
-I forget how long it's been. I
gradually found there was no use in
dwelling on the past, so I let it
be.
The Observer then turns away from the telescope and walks
out onto a balcony, looking through a sextant at a distant
star.
HUNTER
But, with a power like that, those
chumps in the Boiling Isles would be
toast by now! Aren't you at least-?
THE OBSERVER
(cross)
-You aren't listening! It doesn't
divine the future, it only shows the
present in parallel dimensions.
(warning)
And do not presume to question my
designs...
HUNTER
(quailing)
I-I'm not, Master.
(flattering)
I guess it's not like you need it.
No once could beat you anyway,
right?
THE OBSERVER
No witch alone could. But all the
witches of the Isles banding
together might. Especially now that
they know I'm a threat.
(plotting)
But I am devising contingencies for
this outcome...Now-
She shepherds Hunter back inside with an almost maternal
air.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
None of this should concern you. You
still have your studies.
They arrive at the door to his room.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
Keep practicing your incantations in
your chambers. I will have a new
lesson for you tomorrow.
The Observer turns to leave, but adds one thing over her
shoulder.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
...And take it from me. It does no
good knowing what could have been...
CUT TO:
EXT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, ASTEROID - NIGHT
The portal door opens onto the empty space beneath the
asteroid. Luz and William come flying through it on their
staves.
They quickly realize that there is no atmosphere to
breathe. They seize their throats and gasp for air before
William casts a bubble-shield over them.
LUZ
(panting)
Alright. Thin atmosphere. Noted for
the log.
WILLIAM
Let's find a spot to land.
They stealthily wind their way up the side of the floating
asteroid, landing on an empty parapet where there seems to
be air.
LUZ
Alright. We all good on the plan?
Find Hunter. Tie him up. Take him
back to base and...
WILLIAM
(smiling)
Interrogate him to find the
Observer's weaknesses.
(wringing his
hands)
I can't wait to dust off the old
rack of torture!
LUZ
(concerned)
Let's find him first and then decide
how we get him to spill. M'kay?
They set off.
INT. HUNTER'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Hunter tries to sleep, but keeps tossing and turning.
Eventually, he stirs awake. Rubbing his eyes, he notices a
thin mist hovering over his bed.
As he looks up, he sees the mist coalesce into the ghost of
Belos. Hunter gasps and breaks into a cold sweat. The
phantom looks down on Hunter with concern before
disappearing.
A moment later, his bedroom door opens on its own.
INT. CORRIDORS
Hunter peeks out of his bedroom and scans the hallways.
Alone, he creeps out into the hall, following a wispy trail
of mist. He soon arrives at the same spare room he was
poking around in before, finding Belos' ghost waiting
outside it.
HUNTER
What are you trying to show me? Is
there something in there I need to
see?
The ghost merely disappears. Hunter tries the door-knob but
finds it locked. Smirking at the challenge, he quickly
picks the lock with a thin strip of metal and opens the
door.
HUNTER (cont'd)
(cocky)
*Tsch!* Gonna have to do better than
that!
Before he can cross the threshold, a halberd swings up from
a lever trap on the floor. Hunter blocks it with his staff
just before it can collide with his face. He then sighs
with relief and wipes away his nervous sweat.
He now enters the room more cautiously, looking for more
traps. Finding none, he whips the tarp off the mirrors
again and gazes into them with curiosity.
HUNTER (cont'd)
"Alternate realities", huh?
The mirrors flare to life again, each of them showing Luz's
adventures rendered in a different art-style. German
Impressionism, Surrealism, Rubber-hose, Tit-tin Comic-book,
Geometric 00's Cartoon, Anime.
HUNTER (cont'd)
Heh, cool...
At first enchanted, Hunter then starts to scowl.
HUNTER (cont'd)
(smoldering)
I wonder what my life would be like
if that pansy, Luz, wasn't such a
goody-two-shoes...
At these words, the mirrors begin to fill with glowing fog,
almost like static on a television.
INT. HALLWAYS
Luz and William creep through the hallways, happening on
the spare room. Luz peeks through the open door to see
Hunter banging on the mirrors.
HUNTER (cont'd)
Grr! Come on! Show me, you stupid-!
He trails off, seeing Luz in the reflection. Acting
quickly, he whips around and levels his staff.
William charges into the room and quickly closes a small
bubble-shield around the staff's gem, causing it to explode
with the feedback of magical energy.
Luz then weaves in and seizes Hunter in a full nelson.
HUNTER (cont'd)
(struggling)
Urgh! How did you get in here?!
LUZ
Never mind that! We've got some
questions for you!
William takes out the portal key and conjures the door.
Hunter's eyes widen. Thinking quickly, he raises his legs
and kicks William in the back, sending him and Luz
staggering back against the mirror.
The surface of the mirror then glows and engulfs the two
combatants in a portal.
WILLIAM
Luz? Have you got him?
He turns and finds himself alone, the mirror's portal
closing. He runs up to it and presses his hand to the
glass.
WILLIAM (cont'd)
LUZ?!
THE OBSERVER
Hunter, you nosy little neophyte! I
thought I told you to-!
The Observer flings the door open and trails off at seeing
William.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
Oh. Hello...
William tries to retreat through the portal, but at the
Observer's gesture it collapses. He is stranded.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
Well, it seems you found me!
(spreading her
arms)
Here I am, at your mercy! *cackles*
William mounts his staff and flies out the window. Turning
back, he sees a gigantic hologram of the observer floating
above the spires of the observatory, taunting him.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
Run. Fight. You know it makes no
difference. Welcome to my humble
abode, "Lord" William. *more
laughter*
CUT TO:
EXT. BATTLEFIELD - DAY
Luz and Hunter tumble out of the portal into what looks
like a war zone. Magical attacks go flying over their
heads. They quit fighting and scramble for cover behind a
ruined stone wall.
LUZ
Wha-? Where are we?! What did you
do?!
HUNTER
It's the mirror! It must have taken
us to another dimension!
LUZ
Are you serious-? AH!
She flinches as a fireball explodes near their hiding
place. On one side of the battlefield, they see a company
of city guards and coven scouts in tattered uniforms. They
are led by Kikimora, barking orders at them.
KIKIMORA
Do not disgrace your Emperor's
memory! Fight!
At the other side, a wave of abominations and abomaton
soldiers launch slime grenades and energy beams. Alador
Blight can be seen piloting an abomech suit when he
recieves a holographic communique from Odalia.
ODALIA (VOX)
(bored)
Do wrap this up quickly, darling. I
want the Loyalists routed before my
meeting this afternoon.
ALADOR
(weary)
*sigh* Yes, dear.
ODALIA (VOX)
And remember...
(sing-song)
No survivors!
Alador cuts the feed and aims a salvo of rockets at the
enemy lines. Before he can launch them, a bolas tangles
itself across his missile armament and explodes, disabling
it.
Both sides turn to see a new faction entering the fray. A
squad of rag-tag teen witches charge both sides of the
battlefield. Their ranks are comprised mostly of Luz's
schoolmates, all led by Amity.
AMITY
Now! They're both worn down! For
freedom!
Alador aims his particle cannon at the attackers, but can't
bring himself to fire it. As he lays down his weapon in
shame, he notcies Luz and Hunter scrambling across the
battlefield in his combat reticle.
ALADOR
(astounded)
Wait. Is that...?
Kikimora spots her as well.
KIKIMORA
No...It can't be!
AMITY
...Luz...?
All sides stop fighting. Luz and Hunter peek out and look
around.
HUNTER
They...stopped? Because of you?
LUZ
Huh. I guess whatever the dimension,
I'm a uniting force!
Alador furrows his brow and primes his weapons array.
ALADOR
Abomatons! New priority target: Luz
the Human!
His abomaton minions fix their targeting reticles on Luz.
KIKIMORA
Double rations for the one that
brings me her head!
AMITY
I want her brought to me alive...
(smoldering)
...if only just barely.
All three factions now bear down on Luz and Hunter. They
trade glances and gulp before running for their lives.
TITLE
SEQUENCE:
EXT. BATTLEFIELD - DAY
Hunter and Luz dodge missiles and magical attacks as they
flee. Amity's resistance fighters manage to reach them
first, snaring Hunter in a net and Luz in a set of bolas.
AMITY
Bring them to the safe house for
questioning! Hurry!
The resistance fighters haul the captives over their
shoulders and disappear from the battle-field in a smoke-
screen before the other factions can reach them.
INT. RUINED CITY RAMPARTS
Luz and Hunter are roughly tossed into a Don Jon,
surrounded by their captors. Amity marches up to Luz with a
scowl.
AMITY (cont'd)
So. We've finally caught, Luz the
Human, our "valiant savior".
LUZ
Amity, stop! Why are you doing
this?!
HUNTER
She's not "your" Amity! Alternate
universe, remember?!
SKARA
Quiet!
One of the resistance fighter jabs him in the ribs with her
staff.
AMITY
*scoff* "Alternate universe"? That's
a new one-if a bit transparent.
LUZ
(realizing)
No, wait, he's right! We're
different versions of people you
know. We're-
Amity holds her staff up to Luz's chin.
AMITY
-Shut it! I'm not buying your ruse!
LUZ
Come on, is this really the wildest
story you've ever heard? I know you
read The Good Witch Azura tie-in
comic. You know? The one where she
meets "Anti-Zura" from the shadow
realm?
Amity looks genuinely disarmed.
AMITY
What? How did you know I used to
read those trashy human novels?
The other resistance fighters snicker behind Amity's back,
making her blush with embarrassment.
LUZ
Because we're telling the truth! In
my dimension we're friends-
(aside)
-better friends than we are here, I
take it.
Amity looks conflicted for a few moments, but her hardened
demeanor gradually softens.
AMITY
No...You're right. You can't be
"her". You don't have the same
scars...the same sadistic look in
your eye...
LUZ
Gee! My mirror-universe twin must be
a piece of work, huh?
Amity quickly draws her knife. Luz gasps, thinking Amity's
about to slash her, but instead she cuts her ropes, setting
her free.
AMITY
(smoldering)
You have no idea...
SKARA
So, who's this guy then?
HUNTER
OW!
Hunter is jabbed in the back again.
LUZ
Well, I don't suppose Emperor Belos
is a good guy in this universe?
AMITY
Most certainly not.
LUZ
Then, yeah. You'd better leave him
tied up. This guy's a total simp for
Belos.
HUNTER
Hey!
LUZ
Am I lying?
Hunter grumbles as he's hauled off by the resistance
fighters. Amity motions for Luz to follow.
AMITY
Come on. Our leader is going to want
to meet you.
CUT TO:
EXT. THE OWL HOUSE - NIGHT
Eda, Lilith, King, and Hooty are gathered outside the
palistrom tree growing from the turret. Eda frantically
jiggles the doorknob but it won't open.
EDA
(straining)
What-grr-gives-urgh?! Why won't
it open?!
LILITH
(pacing)
They should be back by now! They
said they'd portal straight back if
there was trouble.
HOOTY
LOOK!
Hooty gestures toward the tiny pinprick of light in the sky
representing the stellar observatory. They see tiny streaks
of magical destruction erupting from it.
CUT TO:
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, HALLS
William fights for his life against the Observer,
unleashing his most powerful attacks. She brushes them off
while blasting away in turn.
She blasts him straight through a wall. Wounded and
exhausted, he turns to flee down a hallway. As he runs, the
hall is warped and twisted, sending him sliding through a
nightmarish fun-house of cosmic horrors.
The Observer then warps a candelabrum into a nest of
tentacles to trap him.
THE OBSERVER
*cackles*
WILLIAM
(struggling)
For one so powerful...why these
games? Why not just finish me off
now?
THE OBSERVER
Now that wouldn't be sporting, would
it? I like to see my prey struggle
before it dies! *more cackling*
She releases him and lets him keep running, continuing
their frantic game of cat-and-mouse.
CUT TO:
EXT. BONESBOROUGH - DAY
Amity and her resistance fighters march through the bombed-
out ruins of the city.
LUZ
This is Bonesborough...? What
happened?
AMITY
You happened.
BEGIN
FLASHBACK:
EXT. THE TITAN'S SKULL - THE DAY OF UNITY
AMITY (V.O.)
We thought you were our friend at
first. A spunky freedom fighter that
would help us overthrow the
Emperor's tyranny.
Luz leads the charge against Belos' forces. In this
dimension she looks more "urban", wearing a dark green rain
jacket and wearing her long, greasy hair under and orange
stocking cap.
AMITY (V.O.) (cont'd)
Just when he was about to leave and
conquer the Human World, you
sabotaged his portal.
Belos is about to vanish through the portal when Luz takes
a slingshot and launches a glyph-inscribed cherry bomb at
its frame. The portal overloads and blasts him onto the
pavement.
AMITY (V.O.) (cont'd)
Most of his loyal followers were
stranded on the other side, while he
was stuck with us...
Belos' eyes widen as his enemies surround him.
INT. EMPEROR'S CASTLE
AMITY (V.O.) (cont'd)
You've already met the different
factions that rose to fill the
vacuum he left. Anyone crazy enough
to still be loyal to the Emperor
joined Kikimora's Loyalists.
Kikimora sits in the Emperor's throne, directing her
remaining troops.
INT. FACTORY
AMITY (V.O.) (cont'd)
My mother stayed in the Demon Realm
to unite the Corporations and
exploit the vulnerable people left
in the Boiling Isles.
Odalia conspires with Tibbles, Vulgrim, and other
enterprising witches. Alador glumly repairs his abomech
suit.
END FLASHBACK:
EXT. HEXSIDE SCHOOL - DAY
Amity leads their party to the campus of Hexside, now
heavily fortified with palisades, barbed wire, and
trenches.
AMITY
Those of us who actually wanted a
brighter future rallied to Principal
Bump and the other teachers. Called
ourselves the "Bumps in the Night".
LUZ
Hah! Cute!
They march inside where Amity confers with Bump at a
planning table.
After a few moments deliberating, Bump nods and allows Luz
to approach. Amity continues her story, grasping a small
figurine from the war-map, carved in Luz's likeness.
AMITY
Then, of course, there's "you" and
your self-styled "Bad-Girl Coven".
Nothing but anarchists and thugs.
BUMP
Your counterpart has delighted in
playing the other factions against
each other, prolonging the fighting
for all these years.
LUZ
But why?! What could "I" have to
gain from that?
BUMP
In a twisted way, preventing a
tyrant like Belos from ever rising
again...
(solemn)
...because we'd be too divided and
impoverished to be worth oppressing.
Luz sinks to her feet with her back against the table leg.
LUZ
(despairing)
How could I...
(indignant)
...No, how could "she" do something
so awful?!
She shoots back to her feet and marches around in a tirade
of stammering.
LUZ (cont'd)
If I-no she-were here, I would
give myself-herself a piece of...
OUR mind!
Amity seems endeared by her fumbling show of indignation.
AMITY
(smitten)
You do seem different.
HUNTER
Not really. She's done crazier
things in our reality.
LUZ
(aghast)
LIKE WHAT?!
HUNTER
Well, for wanting to make our world
a paradise, you turned our Emperor
into a monster and nearly killed us
all!
LUZ
Belos was always a monster. And it
was the Observer that made him look
the part!
HUNTER
That's a lie! If it hadn't been for
you-
LUZ
-Then what? We'd be living it up
here?! Is this the Boiling Isles you
and your master want to see?
HUNTER
I...
Hunter trails off, conflicted.
LUZ
Maybe I'm not your enemy. Maybe I'm
not so bad after all.
AMITY
So what went differently for your
world?
Luz pauses, pondering.
LUZ
(determined)
What if I showed you?
HUNTER
What? We don't have time to stay and
fight their war. We have to get back
home-or at least I have to!
BUMP
He has a point. You are not
responsible for the affairs of this
dimension.
LUZ
But, in a way, "I" am, aren't I? I
can't just leave you like this!
Luz strides into the school atrium, taking on a rousing
quality to her speech.
LUZ (cont'd)
I'm not leaving until these people
have a ray of hope!
Amity and her resistance fighters feel a twinge of awe at
her passion.
CUT TO:
EXT. SKIES OVER THE BOILING ISLES - DUSK
Eda and King climb higher into the sky on her staff, flying
toward the observatory. Lilith and Hooty ascend alongside
them. They reach higher and higher, shivering in the cold.
EDA
It's still so far...*brrr* Has
anyone ever flown this high
before...?
LILITH
(teeth chattering)
The current record holder is...S-S-
Stratosphere Sam...at 68,587 feet...
and one t-t-toe-nail...
EDA
Well, get ready to go down in
history.
LILITH
And hopefully not b-b-be history...
Eda's teeth start chattering as well, but King gives her a
big hug, burying her in his fluffy pelt.
KING
Keep your eyes on the prize. Allow
my warrior's floof to keep you
warm!
EDA
*sigh* Thanks, King. You're the best
mink-coat a witch could ask for.
Hooty gets jealous and wraps Lilith in his coils.
HOOTY
Don't worry, Lulu. My loving embrace
will ward off the windchill even
better!
LILITH
(sarcastic)
Yes, Hooty. I'm sure your c-c-cold,
brass skin will delay the frost-b-b-
bite.
They draw closer to the asteroid, the battle still raging
on it's surface.
CUT TO:
INT. DIRK FALLS, DARK CAVE - DUSK
Amity and Luz enter an underground cave and approach a
plinth lit by a skylight.
AMITY
What are we looking for here?
LUZ
You'll see! He's-
They discover that the plinth is empty.
LUZ (cont'd)
...not here? But where is he then?
AMITY
Where's who?
LUZ
Sir William!
Amity looks perplexed.
LUZ (cont'd)
You know! Knight in shining armor?
Swings a sword around? In our world
he became our leader, so there was
no power struggle.
AMITY
Well I wish he were here then.
LUZ
Never thought I'd hear that from
you...
(pondering)
Well then, where's Eda the Owl Lady?
Isn't she still fighting the good
fight somewhere?
Amity pauses.
AMITY
(disturbed)
You...don't want to see her.
Luz's eyes widen.
LUZ
(dreading)
I...I think I have to...
CUT TO:
EXT. NIGHT MARKETS - NIGHT
This time joined by Hunter, they all land in the market
square.
AMITY
The Night Markets are neutral
territory...most of the time. Just
keep your faces hidden and leave the
talking to me.
Luz and Hunter pull some scarves across their faces and
follow Amity. They arrive outside the stall of an apple-
butcher shop. At first it looks unmanned, but a dark shape
shuffles around in the back of the darkened stall.
EDA
(haggard)
Whatd'you want...?
Luz stifles a scream as she sees Eda emerge from the
shadows, a misshapen melding of witch and Owl-beast.
AMITY
Here for a pickup, Owl Lady. And be
quick about it.
EDA
Keep your shirt on, Bossy Boots.
I'll get you a fresh cut.
She takes a hunk of apple-beast meat and begins hacking
through it with a cleaver.
EDA (cont'd)
So. Brought some more recruits to
hear my sordid tale, huh?
AMITY
If it helps you vent...
EDA
(morose)
Yeah. Luz the Human was my
apprentice. So I guess I'm to blame
for all this misery. It's okay. I've
heard it from everyone else...
She keeps hacking through the meat, collecting it's juices
in a jug.
EDA (cont'd)
(nostalgic)
She wasn't so bad at first. Had a
lotta moxie. Kinda reminded me of
me, you know?
But she had a mean streak, and it
rubbed off on me. She convinced me
to get even with my sister for
cursing me with-
(gesturing at her
face)
-this. And well...I got even.
She brings the cleaver down extra hard on her next swipe.
EDA (cont'd)
My family disowned me after that...I
lashed out at my room-mates, so they
left too...Then the Emperor burned
my house to the ground...
Eda slowly lets a few tears leak from her mismatched eyes.
EDA (cont'd)
*sniff* So now, here I am. Your
friendly neighborhood apple butcher.
She finishes her work, corking up the jug of apple-blood
and tossing it to Amity over the counter.
EDA (cont'd)
Now take it and scram. I'm charging
extra for the story next time...
She slams the shutters of her stall closed. They leave down
the street, Luz trying to keep herself from breaking down
into quiet sobs.
Amity comforts her. Even Hunter looks sympathetic.
LUZ
(wiping her tears)
Amity...*sniff* I'm sorry, but I
don't know if we can add anything
good to this mess.
She then clenches her fist and furrows her brow in
determination.
LUZ (cont'd)
But we can take something bad out of
it. We're going home, Hunter. And
we're taking someone with us.
INTERMISSION:
EXT. GRIMGRUB'S PUB - NIGHT
The trio of witches arrive outside of a seedy tavern in the
midst of a rowdy brawl.
HUNTER
You've gotta be joking! Why would we
want to bring that thing into our
reality?!
LUZ
In our world we can lock her up in
prison. The three of us should be
enough to haul her in.
AMITY
Don't underestimate her. That was
Belos' mistake...
They cautiously enter the tavern as unsavory witches and
demons beat each other senseless. The pub's staff continue
waiting on the non-brawling patrons, nonchalant to the
chaos.
ANARCHO-LUZ
Yeah! Crush him, Tom!
Luz's doppelganger reclines in a wing-back chair by the
fireplace, cheering on the brawlers and laughing with her
cronies.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
Aw, come on! You can fight better
than that! Wuss!
The demon she's goading eventually loses his fight, being
thrown at her feet.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
(condescending)
Now, you may have been confused by
the name, but fighting like a girl
doesn't get you into the Bad-Girl
Coven.
She empties her tankard onto his face as her cronies laugh.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
Get this hoser out of here!
Her cronies then drag the demon out of the bar, the other
patrons throwing food at him and laughing. Anarcho-Luz then
turns her attention to the trio of witches approaching her.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
Aww, sorry, princess. But admissions
are also closed to bourgeois brats,
pretty-boys, and-
She's about to count off Luz in her list of undesirables
when she whips her hood off, showing her face.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
Whoa...!
(amused)
No, let me guess. You're my long-
lost twin. Ooh, or a clone!
LUZ
It's a long story, but I'll trade
ya. I want to know what happened to
Sir William.
ANARCHO-LUZ
To who...? Oh, you mean that boor I
found lying around that musty old
cave!
(mocking)
Well he wanted his "warrior's death"
against Belos so much, I let him
have it...
She gestures to the wall where William's sword hangs on
display, slightly tattered from a lost battle. The bar
patrons all laugh as Luz flushes red with anger.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
(disdainful)
We don't need fascists like him in
our Boiling Isles. In fact, we don't
need anyone telling us what to do!
Do we, boys?!
The patrons all raise a clamor, stamping their feet and
jeering.
AMITY
Well, enjoy your reign of terror
while it lasts. It ends tonight.
ANARCHO-LUZ
Oh, really? Why don't we show
mittens what the Bad-Girl Coven
thinks about that!
Her cronies surround the trio, leering and laughing with
malice.
SMASH CUT TO:
EXT. GRIMGRUB'S PUB, CURBSIDE
The tavern erupts with explosions and screaming. The
thuggish bar patrons are tossed out of windows or else flee
out the doors.
INT. GRIMGRUB'S PUB
Anarcho-Luz takes cover behind the bar as her cronies are
trounced or abandon her. She then readies her slingshot
with a glyph bomb and takes aim, unleashing several
explosions of fire, ice, and thorn whips.
Luz contains them with torrents of water, whirlwinds, and
small bubble-shields.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
(incredulous)
Where did a powder-puff like you
learn spells like that?!
LUZ
You should've kept that "boor"
around. He might've taught you
something!
Anarcho-Luz then leaps out from hiding, launching more
bombs. First, she blinds Amity with a light bomb. Then she
throws a knife at hunter, pinning him to the wall by his
tunic. Finally, she weaves around Luz's staff combat and
holds her from behind with a dagger at her throat.
ANARCHO-LUZ
I do the schooling around here!
Thinking fast, Luz sneakily draws an ice-glyph card out of
her pocket and presses it to Anarcho-Luz's jacket. The ice
spreads across her body, almost instantly freezing her in
place.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
(shivering)
Gagh! Cold!
Luz breaks free from her grip and levels her staff.
LUZ
Class dismissed!
LATER
After recovering themselves, Hunter and Amity tie-up
Anarcho-Luz in ropes.
HUNTER
Alright. Now what?
Luz ponders for a moment, her eyes coming to rest on
William's sword, knocked to the floor from its place on the
wall. She picks it up in her hands.
LUZ
Sir William made this sword out of
Titan's-blood ore. He would use it
to cut portals between different
places he had been before. I guess
I've been to the Observer's attic...
at least in our dimension.
HUNTER
(shrugging)
It's worth a shot. From there we can
cross back over to our reality
through the mirror she has in this
one.
ANARCHO-LUZ
Alternate dimensions? So, that's
what you are! A version of me
without any guts.
LUZ
You say that after I just beat the
guts out of you.
Anarcho-Luz keeps taunting them, growing embittered.
ANARCHO-LUZ
And I'm still wondering how I lost
to you! You're weak! I can see it in
your eyes! You've had it easy all
your life while I had to struggle!
She looks away, letting a single tear slip out.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
(brooding)
So...how's Dad doing...?
LUZ
(solemn)
In my world he died when I was
eight.
ANARCHO-LUZ
What?! No. You couldn't have. I
couldn't have become...
(revolted)
...you, after losing him!

FLASHBACK:
INT. THE NOCEDA HOUSE - NIGHT
A young Luz tiptoes down the halls at night, peeking into
her mother's room to see her crying. Camilla holds a photo
of her late husband along with an American flag folded into
a triangle.
From the viewer's perspective, we can see her sobbing.
Curious, Luz enters the room.
YOUNG LUZ
Mamá...?
Camilla quickly wipes her tears and straightens herself up.
CAMILLA
(composed)
Yes, mija?
The young Luz stares at Camilla's stoic façade.
ANARCHO-LUZ (V.O.)
(resentful)
Mom didn't shed a tear over his
death! She felt nothing!
Luz frowns, breaks into tears and runs out into the hall
crying. She then runs into her room and weeps at her
bedside.
ANARCHO-LUZ (V.O.) (cont'd)
But if she didn't have the strength
to mourn him...I would.
Several stills follow, showing Anarcho-Luz's life of
rebellion. She comes to the defense of bullied nerds. Picks
fights with catty cheerleaders. Vandalizes a mean teacher's
car. Gets sent in handcuffs to juvenile hall.
ANARCHO-LUZ
I honored his memory by fighting
injustice, and looking out for
anyone who didn't fit in. But "the
man" just couldn't take it. They
tried to throw me away...
She gets off the bus home from juvenile hall to see a
little owl scampering into a ruined old house. She follows
it, stumbling into the Boiling Isles with all its macabre
wonder.
ANARCHO-LUZ (V.O.)
But then I found the Demon Realm, a
world as wild and awesome as me...
She's enraptured by the sight, leaping onto Eda's staff and
joyriding through the isles. But then Belos's shadow looms
over them.
ANARCHO-LUZ (V.O.) (cont'd)
And I swore it would always be free.
No one should be punished for who
they are!
Anarcho-Luz leaps heroically into the fray with Belos and
his minions.
LUZ (V.O.)
Is that really how you see it?!
The flashback winds back to the moment where young Luz sees
her mother putting on a brave face.
LUZ (V.O.)
Mom wasn't callous! Of course she
was hurting! But she wanted to be
strong for you!
Luz runs up to Camilla and hugs her leg, crying. Camilla
relents and embraces her daughter, crying as well.
YOUNG LUZ
I miss Papá.
CAMILLA
I do to, cariña...I do too.
We then see stills of Luz's life. Her love of fantasy and
sci-fi. Her goofy antics. Being sent to the principal's
office or laughed at by other children.
LUZ (V.O.)
I got in trouble a lot too. The
world can be cruel sometimes. But
society isn't responsible for making
you an outcast!
Before she is whisked away to reform school, we see Luz
discover the Boiling Isles. We see er well-meaning attempts
to help people go awry.
LUZ (V.O.) (cont'd)
You have a different way of doing
things, a different way of seeing
things...that may make you
different, but it doesn't make you a
hero.
We also see her growing closer to Eda, King, Hooty, Gus,
Willow, Amity, and William.
LUZ (V.O.) (cont'd)
You do that by being someone people
can rely on...
END FLASHBACK:
INT. GRIMGRUB'S PUB
LUZ
I guess having that attitude can
literally make a world of
difference...
Anarcho-Luz sulks and broods in her restraints. Hunter
reflects on their words, moved.
LUZ (cont'd)
(stern)
And don't worry. You won't be
punished for who you are, but for
what you've done. Let's go.
Luz swings the sword through the air, cutting open a
portal. Hunter marches Anarcho-Luz through it. Luz begins
to follow, but Amity stops her, grabbing her by the hand.
AMITY
Wait. If this is the last I'm going
to see you...
Luz pauses.
AMITY (cont'd)
We...never got along in this
dimension. We were enemies from the
moment we met.
(demure)
But I'm glad we're friends in your
world.
LUZ
(smiling)
And in this one...
She leans in and kisses Amity on the cheek, causing her to
blush. Luz then disappears through the portal with a wink.
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, SPARE ROOM - NIGHT
They all arrive in the mirror universe's version of the
Observer's spare room, only a few details differing.
LUZ (cont'd)
(to Hunter)
So, what'll you do when you're back?
HUNTER
I dunno. I guess things aren't as
simple as I thought...
He looks perturbed by Luz's hopeful stare.
HUNTER (cont'd)
But don't go thinking we're friends!
I just-
He's interrupted by a moaning sound echoing through the
halls of the castle.
HUNTER (cont'd)
Wait. Did you hear that...?
The moaning sound continues, like the voice of someone
crying out in pain.
LUZ
(haunted)
I think I know what that is...
INT. DUNGEON
The trio of witches open a creaking door into a dark
chamber filled with eerie green light. At the chamber's
center, a large glass reservoir hangs down from the
ceiling, containing a frothing mass of viscous black
liquid.
The fluid roils and churns. A face slowly starts to
materialize in its contents, moaning in pain. It's Belos.
HUNTER
Belos!
ANARCHO-LUZ
(casual)
Oh, so this is where he ended up
after we beat him into paste. Guess
we should've been more thorough...
Not listening, Hunter rushes over to the reservoir, aghast.
BELOS
Heeeelp...Meee...
HUNTER
Don't worry my liege, I'll get you
out!
Hunter starts banging on the glass, trying to break it. Luz
stops him.
LUZ
Wait! It's too dangerous!
HUNTER
I'm not leaving him in there!
LUZ
That's not Belos anymore. The
Observer's turned him into a proto-
Titan. He'll try to suck the magic
out of anything he sees!
BELOS
Maaaagic...must have...maaagic...!
Hunter pauses, conflicted and shaken.
HUNTER
N-no...It can't be. She was his
mentor, why would she-?
LUZ
-Not his mentor. His puppet master.
This is what I've been trying to
tell you!
THE OBSERVER
Very astute, young one!
The Observer materializes out of the darkness and seizes
them all in a telekinetic grab.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
I see my inter-dimensional mirror
works both ways. I knew I should
have disposed of the infernal thing!
HUNTER
Y-you! You did this! You MONSTER!
THE OBSERVER
I don't know who you are, but you
haven't seen a monster yet...!
Enraged, Hunter aims a spell at the reservoir, shattering
the glass.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
You IMBECILE! Do you know what
you've done?!
Belos' slimy form congeals on the floor and morphs into a
skeletal creature. It sees the Observers incredibly
luminous magical aura and ignores the children in favor of
her.
BELOS
MAAAGIC...!
THE OBSERVER
NO! BACK AWAY, BEAST! I AM YOUR
MASTER! I-
Belos lurches forward and seizes her in his grimy claws,
unhinging his jaw and absorbing her magic.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
*screams*
While the Observer is subdued, the three witches are able
to break free from her grasp and run out of the room.
LUZ
Through the mirror! Hurry!
They rush out into the hallway as The Observer
disintegrates in Belos' grasp. The more of her energy he
feeds on, the more he grows, bursting through the dungeon
ceiling.
However, his body also seems to curdle and boil, growing
unstable. The massive creature can no longer contain the
immense power and finally explodes.
The fleeing witches just manage to reach the spare room and
escape through the mirror before the observatory is
consumed in magical fire.
Meanwhile, the people of the war-torn Bonesborough below
look up at the explosion in the night sky; a brilliant ball
of blue flame. Despite not knowing it, they are free of
both Belos and The Observer.
CUT TO:
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, SPARE ROOM
The three witches emerge on the other side of the mirror,
collapsed in a heap. They take a few moments to catch their
breaths.
LUZ
Alright, we need to go.
HUNTER
You go...I'm staying.
LUZ
What?
Hunter tries to recover his aplomb, his rage smoldering.
HUNTER
The Observer still thinks I'm her
puppet in this world.
(determined)
I can do more by playing along.
LUZ
(concerned)
I thought the same thing while I was
working for Belos...It didn't turn
out well.
They pause in their debate, hearing the sound of muffled
explosions rocking the Observatory.
ANARCHO-LUZ
Oh, now what?!
LUZ
*gasp* Will!
HUNTER
Go! Now!
Luz drags Anarcho-Luz out the door while Hunter remains,
contemplating his treachery against the Observer.
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, BASILICA
Eda and Lilith do battle with the Observer, distracting her
while King drags him to safety.
THE OBSERVER
I'm so glad you arrived! My other
plaything was getting bruised.
King tries to revive William and speak with him.
KING
Where's Luz?
WILLIAM
(exhausted)
I don't know. She just vanished. I-
LUZ
I'm right here!
Luz comes running into the chamber with Anarcho Luz in tow.
KING
Who's-?
LUZ
Explanations later. Escape now!
Luz takes William's sword and cuts open a portal.
LUZ (cont'd)
This way!
Hearing her, Eda and Lilith combine their magical prowess,
launching the Observer back into a pillar.
THE OBSERVER
Gagh!
They then retreat into the portal with Hooty and King as
they drag William.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
WHAT?! NO!
Luz is just about to drag Aanrcho-Luz into the portal when
The Observer seizes her in another telekinetic stranglehold
and pulls her back.
ANARCHO-LUZ
*screams* Wait! Don't leave me!
LUZ
No!
Before she can reach out for her, the portal closes,
leaving Anarcho-Luz stranded in the clutches of the
Observer.
INT. THE OWL HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Hooty and King deposit William on the sofa. He is badly
bruised and tired.
Meanwhile, Eda tries to console Luz.
EDA
Who was that? Should we go back?
Luz deliberates with herself for a moment before
sorrowfully relenting.
LUZ
*sigh* No, it's too late now...Let's
just say I left a part of myself
back there.
Eda clasps her shoulder, but Luz seizes her in a tearful
hug.
LUZ (cont'd)
*sniff* I'd never do anything to
hurt you. You know that, right?
Surprised, but endeared, Eda pats her head.
EDA
Aww, kid.
Eda accepts the hug, stroking Luz's hair while pondering to
herself:
EDA (cont'd)
Man, what happened back there...?
CUT TO:
INT. STELLAR OBSERVATORY, BASILICA
The Observer holds Anarcho-Luz aloft, surrounding her with
coursing ribbons of gold energy.
THE OBSERVER
At least I'll have the consolation
of wiping you from existence,
meddling human!
ANARCHO-LUZ
NO! WAIT! I'M NOT WHO YOU THINK!
The ribbons tighten around her, dissolving her body into
luminous star-dust.
ANARCHO-LUZ (cont'd)
NO! NO! I'M NOT THE SAME PERSON! I'M
NOT THE SAME LUZ! PLEASE! I'M
BEGGING YOU! NOOOO-
She slowly fades into nothingness, shedding one last tear
as her final screams echo through the halls. The Observer
doesn't even relish a sinister laugh, quietly fuming to
herself.
A moment later, Hunter walks into the room, pretending to
rub his eyes from being woken from a restful sleep.
HUNTER
(feigning
ignorance)
What's going on! I heard noises...
THE OBSERVER
Our security was breached. It seems
the Owl Lady has finally broken her
curse and discovered our location...
HUNTER
What?!
THE OBSERVER
Disturbing, I know. But I suppose
those fools had to wise up at some
point...
The Observer floats through the halls, beckoning Hunter to
follow.
THE OBSERVER (cont'd)
Come along, Hunter. It's time I
revealed the full extent of my plans
to you...
Hunter follows along, trying to hide his anticipation.
HUNTER
Good. I was wondering when you were
going to start trusting me...
