Author's Note: After some research, it seems the mother of MacCready's child is named Lucy but 'when they met he told her he was a soldier'. She died when they took shelter with their son in an abandoned Metro station which appear frequently in the Capital Wastes, but still implies he was with his son and her and _not_ in Big Town. This also would seem to imply that this Lucy is not Lucia 'Lucy' from Little Lamplight who was their doctor and, for lack of a better term, a MacCready loyalist. After this, he homesteaded and did not live in Big Town, but did 'visit every doctor he could find' when his son became sick and left him in the care of friends when he did so he could quest for the cure which he finds in Fallout 4 while being a companion of the Lone Wanderer after a stint with the Gunners.

In chapter "Chess on the Map - 3", the Lone Wanderer assumes that Lucia 'Lucy' is the Lucy that was with MacCready, because I thought that was the case.

So, my ruling is that what passes for continuity is not broken. The Lone Wanderer can assume what she wants, MacCready talked about the situation at hand rather than correct her. MacCready's past is stated to be lived away from the people he knew. My intention then for this scene will go forward with the same intent but a corrected understanding.

Lucia was trying to enjoy herself. She was enjoying herself, no doubt about it. The boy, now man, she wanted was lying under her in her bed for once. His child had been cured due to the man's exploits and made his way safely back to Little Lamplight. Even the constant fight for survival was a little slower recently. She just knew that times like these were to be savored, if only for their rarity. So she tried very hard to enjoy herself.

The little light on the HAM radio set her husband had dragged back to Big Town was flashing. He had told her that this was absolutely important. But that was because it was the end of their time together, at least for now. So she settled down and tried to go back to sleep. She was trying so very hard to enjoy herself.

And it was not to be.

"Lucy.", MacCready awoke. "You were supposed to wake me."

The woman snuggled back into him. "And you were supposed to come to Big Town and marry me. I think we're far from even."

"Isn't in kind of late in the morning?", he continued. "Aren't you supposed to be nursing for Red?"

"I'm as much a doctor as Red is.", Lucia objected. "I've been putting people back together longer that you've been shooting them apart, Major."

MacCready nearly chuckled. "Okay, okay, I'm sorry. Dr. Lucy. But I still need to take this." He rose from the bed.

"You could stay.", Lucia warned. "You don't have to go back to fighting. You were supposed to leave Little Lamplight, come to Big Town, and /"

"Punch Red out of office?"

Lucy shook her head side to side. "I was thinking more become our sheriff than mayor. Teach your son to be your deputy when he grows up."

MacCready paused after he had put his pants back on. "That would be a demotion. Maybe, after this war's over...maybe.

"But that's the future, Lucy. The war is now. It could very well be the last one, if Red'll let it.

"I need to get this. Major MacCready here. Over."

"Please wait for Colonel Bridget. Over."

"Acknowledged. Over."

Lucy sat up. "Red already told you Big Town's position, Robert."

The man rubbed his hands over his eyes. "I know. I know. But I think she just doesn't get it. Things are different in the Commonwealth. I mean, actually different. Not just a different name to the gang leaders or a new monster. The General...she's going about things differently. Setting up a nation. She's got at least ten cities, double that in communities across six territories where a full day can go by without a civilian needing to raise a weapon. The Brotherhood of Steel tried to melt the place/"

"I still don't believe that.", Lucia interjected.

"/ and she still kept food on the table. For civilians. For civilians Lucy."

The radio spoke up. "Colonel Bridget for Major MacCready. Over."

"Major MacCready here. You know I'm still not in your chain of command Bridget. Over."

"That's colonel to you soldier. I'm serving the same General you are. You will respect it. Over."

"Sure you are."

"I will reach through this radio, wrap my fist around your neck and drag your flea-bitten ass back here, MacCready."

Silence.

"I'm just pointing out that it's unusual for information to come through you to me. Over."

"Doesn't matter. As long as I'm colonel and you're major, when I say 'jump' you better already be in the air. Do you get me? Over."

"Yes, ma'am. Over."

"You damn well better. Now as for orders, your diplomatic overtoned vacation is up. Your team's assembling in the Republic of Rosie. The General has a list of objectives for you and your people. Over."

"Acknowledged. Ma'am. Over."

"Over and out."

Lucy considered the man in front of her and compared him to the Mayor MacCready she grew up with. "Well, she seemed like a ray of sunshine."

MacCready dismissed the objection with a wave of her hand. "Bridget's an ex-Gunner leader. You know, the outfit I left? After the General won the civil war in the Commonwealth, she integrated the Gunners into the Minutemen by forming the Marine Corps. Bridget probably just believes that she has to show her authority and her loyalty on her shirt sleeves. Probably."

"And your list of 'objectives'. Just more people to kill as hired gun?", the woman continued.

MacCready turned his full attention to her. "Honestly? I can say that I don't know yet. I mean, sure, I'm in command of the Minutemen's special forces unit. The pre-War armor that I've been issued can tell you what types of missions I'm expected. But our last one...we actually were successful without killing anyone.

"The General isn't like other people. Killing out of hatred, or fear. She really does consider what the Commonwealth needs and has goals. I might be retrieving something as vital as the cure to my son or even escorting a VIP. I actually don't know."

MacCready sat back down on the bed next to Lucy. "So how about this?", he said then kissed her shoulder. "We get some breakfast." He kissed her neck. "I take one last stab at convincing Red." He kissed her cheek. "And then you see me off?"

Lucy kissed him. "Well, that's a lot of stuff to do. We better get started, Mr. MacCready." And with that she got out of bed.

MacCready fell onto the bed with a huff.
