Chapter 31
Violet piled her hair on the top of her head before going into the kitchen, binding it into a messy bun. She had to admit that the years in solitude did her some good. Occasionally she would hear from Howard and Peggy, but sometimes it wasn't as often as she would sometimes hear from her brother more often since he lived close by.
She padded lightly across the floor to the sink. She turned on the water letting out a soft breath, her hand slowly going to the dogtags that were around her neck. A few tears slid from her lashes as she released them. She took a shaky breath as she began to wash the dishes that were in her sink.
There was a loud knock on the door.
She let out a soft chuckle shaking her head lightly. "It's open." She called out as she continued to wash the dishes.
Heavy footsteps came into the cabin and into the kitchen. It was none other than Jimmy stopping by for another visit. "Hey Pup." He called out gruffly as he put his sack down onto the table.
"Sack on the floor Jimmy." She pointed out as she continued to do the dishes.
Jimmy let out a breath moving his bag to the floor. "You and your rule of no bags on the table." He said, shaking his head as he walked over to her.
Violet shook her head lightly as she put the last dish into the drainer. She turned to look at him. "So what brings you by?" She asked, wiping her hands on the hand towel that was there.
"You haven't been paying much attention to the news, have you pup?" He questioned his brow quirking a bit as he looked at his sister.
Her brows raised as she looked at her brother. "No, not particularly." She said, shaking her head lightly. "Why was there something that I should've been paying attention to?"
"There is war going on across the sea." He pointed out.
Violet let out a soft groan. "Another war?" She looked at Jimmy, her brows furrowed slightly.
"Yeah. I guess the human race can't seem to stay out of wars." Jimmy said, shrugging his shoulders.
"And you want to do what? Join in the war efforts again?"
"It's better than sitting around and doing nothing." He said putting his hands on her shoulders squeezing them lightly.
"I don't think I can do that."
"You don't want to join in? What happened to my sister who loved getting into war?"
"I never liked getting into war Jimmy." She pointed out as she moved around her brother. "I can't deal with getting into another war." She shook her head lightly.
Jimmy crossed his arms as he looked his sister over. He could see that she had thinned out over the years and looked more tired than she usually did. His eyes landed on the chain that was around her neck. He took a breath through his teeth knowing exactly whose dog tags those were. "You're not going to tell me about him are you?"
Violet's hand went to the dog tags.
"You know, pup, you always talked about William after he died…"
"That was different."
"Was it because I knew him?"
Violet nodded her head weakly. "Yes." She admitted softly. She knew that if she talked about James it could make her heart ache more and make things more permanent.
"Who was he? I know he is another love…" Jimmy said as he sat down to look at his sister. "You know I won't judge you for having someone you love…"
Violet took a shaky breath. "Is it weird that he had your name?"
"James?" Jimmy said with a soft chuckle. "I have to admit that it is weird."
"Everyone else called him Bucky."
"So what did he call you? If you called him James?"
Violet swallowed the lump in her throat. "He called me Letty."
Jimmy's brow raised before letting out a chuckle.
Violet gave him a sour look. "Now come on Jimmy. You're laughing at him calling me Letty?"
"Sorry, but sister, you don't look like a Letty."
Violet rolled her eyes. "I don't even look like a Violet either." She pointed out looking at him as she crossed her arms. "But that was what he called me…"
"So you dated…"
"I wouldn't have called it dating when we were always out on the field."
"So you fell in love with him. What happened to him?"
"He died… I didn't go with them when they picked up Dr. Zola off of a train. I had been ordered to stay behind." She said softly as tears began to form in her eyes. "In a way it is my fault…"
"Violet, this isn't your fault for what happened to James."
"Jimmy, he was supposed to come home to me."
"And what? Survive World War II and then what?"
Violet looked down sadly. "He was thinking of marriage."
Jimmy's lips went together as he got up to his feet. "Marriage? Do you see yourself getting married?"
"At the time, yes, I did Jimmy."
Jimmy picked up his rucksack.
"But I take it the only reason why you stopped by was to see if I was joining in on this war."
"Yeah. But I can tell that you're not into that."
Violet let out a breath. "Less likely to fall in love."
Jimmy hugged her. "You just be careful out there."
"You're the one going to war. You are the one that needs to be careful."
Jimmy let out a chuckle. "Yeah yeah. I'll be fine Pup. Always am."
