Chapter 29

Violet looked at Howard as he sped down the road in a black and white car. Only a year after what had happened during the war she hadn't expected to be brought back into the world of Howard Stark. "Remind me again of why I came with you again?" She questioned as she looked over at him with a look of concern.

"We have one more person… Peg."

Violet let out a breath. "Howard, you telling me that you need to get Peggy doesn't help the fact that you came by my home without telling me the reason why just yet.

Howard pulled his car squealing his tires coming to a stop. He let out a breath as he opened the door seeing Peggy having a rifle pointed at him. "I know. I should've called first. Did you miss me?"

ACACAC

"They're calling you a traitor." Peggy said, looking over at Howard in the backseat as Jarvis drove the car and Violet sat in the front seat.

Violet's brow raised. "Traitor?" She asked slightly confused, unsure of what was going on. She had kept herself from hearing any sort of news by only going out when she needed to.

"I'm calling it a setup. I have a vault. "Had," I should say. Sub-basement of my office… Triple-thick, lead-lined. It was where I kept my bad babies."

Peggy's brows raised. "Bad babies?"

"Inventions too dangerous for anyone… Even my friends."

Peggy let out a breath giving him a look. "Which begs the question, why invent them at all?"

"I can't help what I think of, but I can damn well control what I sell. At least, I could until last month."

"What happened last month?" Violet asked slightly confused or still what was going on. But she had a feeling that this was something that was going to be fairly dangerous.

"I was in Monaco... with a lovely tax advisor. When I got back, I found a hole under my vault, all the way to the sewer. Somebody cleaned me out. A couple of weeks later, my bad babies… they start turning up on the black market."

"But why run? Why not tell the Senate the truth, ask for their help?"

"Apparently, it's not too big a jump to see me cutting a hole in my own vault and making some money on the sly."

Peggy scoffed.

Howard gave her a look. "Really?"

"I'm just considering all the angles. Seems you have a lot of them."

"Now, that's the Peggy Carter I need."

"For what?"

"To clear my name."

"You can't be serious."

"I try not to be, but sometimes it just slips out anyway. Oh, come on, Peg. You know darn well I didn't do this, which means the SSR is looking for the wrong guy. I want to find the right guy. But I'm gonna need someone on the inside, someone I can trust. And, Peg, there's no one I trust more than you and Violet."

Violet let out a breath shaking her head lightly knowing that this wasn't a good sign of how things were going to be. She knew that this was dangerous. She could only hope that he wasn't asking for the both of them to be on the inside.

"Howard, you're asking me to become a traitor in order to prove you are not one. You do see the irony?"

"Come on, Peg. I know they're not using you right over there. You want a mission that matters? This is it. My technology is in the hands of some nut that wants to be the next red skull… You have no idea how bad that could be. Right now, you're the only one that can stop that. Here's good. Kill the lights."

Jarvis brought the car to a stop, shutting the engine off and killing the lights.

They got out of the car as the eerie sound of a buoy rang out in the silent air.

Jarvis grabbed a briefcase from the trunk handing it to him.

The three of them walked down towards the dock.

"Where are you headed?" Peggy questioned Howard as Violet followed behind her.

"Some of my babies have already been sold overseas. I'm gonna pay them a visit. The rest of them are here somewhere, which is where you come in. Word is, one of the nasty ones is hitting the market in the next day or two." He said as he got into a boat and began preparing it to leave.

"What is it?"

"Just a piece of paper… My formula for molecular nitramene. Technically, we're not even sure it works, but, well, let's face it... I invented it, so it works. If that stuff were ever fabricated…" He said getting out of the boat and walking towards Peggy.

"Boom?"

Howard took Peggy's hand in his own. "This much would level a city block. And I'm not talking about the short ones... avenues."

Peggy eyed him for a moment. "I'm going to regret this, aren't I?"

"Absolutely." Howard looked up at Jarvis. "But when you're not humiliating him, that fellow up there is my butler... Edwin Jarvis. He'll help you in any way he can. I owe you one, pal." He hugged Peggy knowing that this was his goodbye to her for now. He headed back towards the boat and looked at Violet. "I'll need you to come with my Violet."

Violet let out a breath and followed Howard onto the boat as the buoy rang once again.

Howard looked up at Peggy. "There are only a dozen fences that can handle something this hot." He said as he started the boat up. "You just got to learn which one." He then unhooked the boat. "And I figured you'd never have any trouble finding a man."

"The trick is finding the right one."

Howard smiled at Peggy before heading out onto the water.

Violet looked over at Howard. "Care to explain Howard why I'm coming with you?"

Howard let out a breath. "You're a person that I can trust coming overseas with me." Howard said as he steered the boat with ease.

"You came and got me from Canada for this?" She questioned her brows pinching together.

"Oh come on, Vi, you can't tell me that you didn't miss this sort of life."

Violet let out a breath shaking her head. "Honestly I did miss it, but not this much to be brought into something that could get me shot at."

Howard pursed his lips together in thought. "Probably it would get you shot at. But can you see why I didn't want my weapons to be in the wrong hands."

"Honestly Howard I don't blame you." Violet said as her hair whipped around in the breeze. "I just wish you would have told me this sooner."

"I'm sorry Vi. Oh you never did tell me, did your brother make it back home?"

"He made it back home alright." Violet said with a chuckle.

"I'm sure we have a lot to catch up on after this year of being apart."

Violet shook her head lightly as she looked over at him. "Curious kitten aren't you?"
