Tanjirou's POV (In his mindscape)

"Tanjirou!"

The feeling of nothingness.

It was something Tanjirou was somewhat familiar with.

Almost like he was sleeping now.

He was sure he was dead. After all, having his limbs torn apart by a demon by the name of Muzan.

"Huh, so I have a mind of my own still… That must mean I'm still alive…" Tanjirou thought to himself s he was trying to find any way of getting up.

As Tanjirou was trying to figure out what was going on, he wasn't sure when he would wake up. All he could do was wait and ponder everything that happened to him.

As he was thinking about everything, he began to reminisce about his life.

Considering everything that man had told him as he was ruthlessly slaughtering Tanjirou apart, he had told him some crucial information.

Information that he had the time to try and decipher.

Considering how he was taught by his father, he was told to always be productive in doing something. In short, don't laze around, especially crucial in their environment when they were trying to always make some money.

"Demons are creatures that eat humans. In nature, almost every species has something to worry about. A creature that eats them. For us humans, they are demons." Tanjirou remembered the words of his father. The words that he told his son about demons when he was young.

Once again, Tanjirou thought that the concept of demons was merely a hoax or something that people talk about. Considering the circumstances that Tanjirou found himself in, he was beginning to realize that what his father had told him, was in fact true.

For the most part, his father was the only one who told them about demons.

The second was his grandmother. She too also spoke of demons, which made Tanjirou wonder if it was something their family had a history of.

Then Saburo told his story about demons, and that was when Tanjirou began to realize demons might possibly be real.

All three of them were not the type to lie, especially his father before he was five.

The topic of his father was immediately something that was a sensitive topic for Tanjirou.

His father was abusive, or lack of a better term. He was mentally degrading to Tanjirou, all the while the scars Tanjrou had across his body were enough to cause him to remember every injury well.

Then, that demon came and injured him, causing him more pain than his father and mother ever did.

But then, there was the difference in how the person was feeling as they were performing the action. One that Tanjirou could smell.

When it came to his father hurting him, Tanjirou could smell the regret coming from his father. His father was clearly holding back, hesitant, and feeling very guilty for what he was doing.

That was not the case for Muzan.

Muzan, was a monster. True vermin.

Muzan had a gleeful face across his face as he was enjoying ripping Tanjirou's limbs apart.

It was clear to Tanjirou the difference between these two.

At least his father showed a deep sense of regret for his actions.

In the meantime, Tanjirou continued to think about everything.

"You see, we can use flowers as incense, so the smell you have sometimes comes from these very flowers, keeping us safe from most demons. In addition, there are many humans out there. Humans, who are skilled enough with a blade to slay demons. They are called demon slayers."

"So demon slayers…" Tanjirou thought as he was clearly intrigued.

While he was intrigued about why his father knew this, considering everything, it somewhat made sense.

"Perhaps Father was trying to teach them demon slaying? He did mention they used blades to slay demons… So is that what our father was doing?" Tanjrou asked himself, clearly unsure about the entire ordeal.

"I kind of wish he told me more about how exactly demon slayers fight other demons… Because of that fight against that demon, there was no way I could've won… How did they fight them?" Tanjirou thought.

Just as to answer his question, another thought came to him.

"There are three ways to kill a demon. First, there are some types of flowers and poisons that can kill demons, they are toxic to them. The second way is through the sunlight. Demons are vulnerable to the sun's rays and will immediately begin to vaporize and burn up. The third way is through decapitation with a special blade, that is infused with the sun's rays."

Tanjirou immediately facepalmed.

He forgot about that part. He had to decapitate the demon with a special weapon. A flimsy hatchet was not capable of being able to kill a demon.

"Maybe I should have tried to stall him until sunrise… No… A snowstorm was approaching, so there was no way that would have been a proper strategy." Tanjirou sighed as he concluded there was nothing else he could've done.

He truly was a useless person. Just as his father had said.

But why was his father trying to tell him it wasn't his fault if that was the case?

Why was his father showing regret and sadness yet again?

"Is my father a manipulator?" Tanjirou asked himself before he sighed. "Even then, I could have maybe managed to save some of them… In the end, only Nezuko was alive, but in the hands of that monster…"

Tanjirou was clearly looking a bit confused with everything before he contemplated.

"Starting today, you will all be taught to swing a sword," Tanjurou told his children, something Tanjirou remembered.

Needless to say, it was the start of his trauma and pain train. For he was completely useless in managing to find his affinity.

Nezuko, Takeo, Shigeru, and Hanako were all able to find their affinities, and yet Tanjirou couldn't. He felt useless every day he saw his siblings succeed, and he wished he could have at least been on par with them.

That all changed, when he performed the Hinokami Kagura.

"You're probably better at the Hinokami Kagura than me." The fact his father, someone very adept at the Hinokami Kagura, was complimenting him about it was significant enough.

Tanjirou remembers how he was perfectly able to perform it within 6 months of practicing. Plus, he was able to properly dance from sunset to sunrise after 2 years of being in the temple of worship.

As Tanjirou thought and smiled at the image of him performing the Hinokami Kagura, it became the very thing that helped him live.

Even if dancing was all he was good at, alongside burning coal, at least he had some uses.

Every day, as his siblings progressed further, and became more advanced, he leaned more towards the dance as a crutch in keeping himself of value.

Alas, he couldn't always keep it up, and there were days when he felt useless.

"You are useless."

Tanjirou immediately looked around, but once again was met with pitch black.

Tanjioru was a bit scared, "W-who's there?"

Alas, nobody answered.

He could feel something demonic near him, and it terrified him.

What was Tanjirou hearing?

Even then, he was still trying to tolerate his own thoughts and everything he was told about himself.

"The boy is useless, I assure you. All he can do is trade charcoal and dance." That was another thing his father had told him. Another thing he had to deal with in his mind.

"I see… I hate that kid…" Tanjirou tried to feel his birthmark, but he ultimately couldn't. He was still in a weird state of consciousness, that he couldn't comprehend.

"He's the spitting image of your ancestor. Even that mark on his forehead infuriates me." Tanjirou remembers what the monster he thought of as a child, now finding out to be Muzan, was saying about him.

Tanjirou gritted his teeth.

Just thinking of that man was enough for Tanjirou to growl.

However, as Tanjirou thought about that man, Tanjirou could feel a sense of vibration occurring.

"What the." Tanjirou thought, clearly surprised about the sudden feeling. "So that means I'm still alive… But how?"

Tanjirou began to think of the ancestor that Muzan was referring to.

"Who is the ancestor he was referring to?" Tanjirou asked himself, trying to go deep into his mind, maybe his father told him as a child.

"Our ancestors come from a mix of skilled swordsmen and coal burners."

"Are the swordsmen from our ancestors what he meant?" Tanjirou asked himself once again, trying to decipher everything.

It first started as him wanting to know why his father knew what ultimately his family's killer was, but now, it delved into a mystery about himself as a person.

Tanjirou felt that he was missing something. He was missing the bigger picture compared to what others thought.

He wouldn't be surprised if he was the only one not to know about it.

"How ironic that his descendants became as puny and worthless as that kid… I bet if he was able to see him, he would laugh at how weak he was." The thoughts of that man were once again in his mind.

"Just who? Who is my ancestor?" Tanjirou asked, as his vision was still pitch black.

There was just no way for Tanjirou to find out now. He would have to try later.

"So useless, so worthless… So meaningless, such a man of no value." The thoughts of both his father and that man once again caught Tanjirou's mind.

Immediately, he wanted to grit his fists.

Alas, he couldn't.

He still was in the darkness. As for the time being, he was still trying to think about everything.

"So from what I'm assuming, that man killed our family and me because of our ancestor? But is that it? Sometimes tells me there was something more he was looking for. Why did he tell me my sister, Nezuko was in good hands? What did he mean by that?" Tanjirou asked.

Whilst Tanjirou was aware of the terms of demons, he wasn't aware that demons could formerly be humans that were converted to demons.

As a result, Tanjirou thought that Nezuko was still human, clearly not a human. Unless she was a demon, then Nezuko wouldn't be under the wing of that man, especially if she was awake to witness that man kill her entire family.

Then, there was the statement that his father was telling him.

"Remember Tanjirou, remember to breathe like Hinokami." Tanjirou's father had once told him, and ironically enough it was the very thing he forgot about whenever he was in quite a stressful event.

He didn't need to be reminded by his father. If anything, Tanjirou was able to do that on his own.

The Hinokami Kagura was relatively interesting to Tanjirou, as he was clearly trying to figure out why it was significant.

Tanjirou was never the type to question everything he did, but considering the tradition, he assumed the Kagura was merely a blessing when burning coal.

Tanjirou always worked with fire, and the face his body was covered in burn marks and scars across his body, either from an accident while burning coal, or by his father punishing him, Tanjirou was always surrounded by fire and burning, whether it was by his profession now, or the dance he did.

All he knew was that both of the things he excelled at involved fire.

But then again, if Tanjirou was surrounded by flames, why wasn't his affinity Flame Breathing? Why couldn't he learn it like his siblings?

"Who was the ancestor of mine did Muzan hated?!" Tanjirou yelled to no one in particular. "Who was that ancestor?"

"And how do I apparently look like him…" Tanjirou asked one for a time before he thought everything over.

"Let's see… If I look like my ancestor, then they must have had the same red burgundy hair as me…" Tanjirou thought, as surprisingly, instead of imagining someone with his kind of hair, a ponytail tied up like Tanjirou himself, he began to imagine someone with wavy, long red, burgundy hair.

"Huh, so that's who my descendent is…" The figure spoke, clearly surprising Tanjirou.

"I remember back then that my father beat me senselessly, almost killing me when I wore the Hanufuda earrings, they must've had some significance." Tanjirou continued to think, and suddenly, a face showed up, with the hanufuda earrings. The very one that Tanjirou had on him, but was not told to wear.

"He probably also had the same birthmark as me then." Tanjirou continued, and before he knew it, the figure was in front of him.

It was a tall individual, with long burgundy hair, and a flaming scar, or mark on the left side of his forehead. It did look like Tanjirou.

Before Tanjirou could even manage to continue, or even try to ask him who he was, he felt his black consciousness begin to shake erratically.

"Well that's unexpected…" Tanjirou thought as he was realizing that his entire point of view was shaking. He really was unsure what was going on.

In the end, he managed to feel his body once again. It was such a weird experience, but it was something he was finally managing to feel.

"So I am alive… With my body… That's nice." Tanjirou told himself as he was managing to find himself in what appeared to be a landscape.

"Where am I?" Tanjirou asked himself. It seemed that he was on what appeared to be a watery surface, with nothing but blue skies and some white clouds.

Where exactly was Tanjirou?

"You are in your body's landscape."

Tanjirou immediately turned around to the source of the noise.

And what he saw, truly terrified, and intrigued him.

"Who are you?" Tanjirou asked.

The figure in question that Tanjirou was observing was an individual that literally looked like him. It was the exact replica of Tanjirou himself.

The only difference was that the person in front of him seemed to be more threatening and ominous in appearance.

The individual in question had the same attributes as Tanjirou, with some key differences.

The first was that his forehead birthmark seemed to have evolved in a similar manner to that of that other man, but also had some smaller ones across his left jaw, and right forehead.

Then, there was his eyes. Tanjirou's eyes widened at the cat-like pupils and the bloodred eyes that encompassed the other individual he was staring at.

In the meantime, his sclera was also pitch black.

"W-Who are you?" Tanjirou asked the figure, and almost immediately, the figure charged toward Tanjirou.

Tanjirou's eyes widened in shock before he sidestepped away from the individual in question.

"I-Is he another demon? But where are we?" Tanjirou asked himself in his mind, as he was clearly confused in his mind at how he was fighting a lookalike of him, who was apparently a demon.

"Why are you fighting me?" Tanjirou asked the demon in front of him.

"Are you really that stupid?" The figure asked Tanjirou, who could only look on in shock. "Do you even know what happened to you?"

At this, Tanjirou reflected again quickly, before he growled, "Of course I do! I was tortured by a monster!"

Tanjirou's opponent quickly slapped Tanjirou in the chin and he was forced to lean back, tumbling a bit as he tried to keep his balance.

His opponent could have easily stopped him and downed him there, but for some reason, he wasn't.

"Pathetic… That's what you are… But considering you've managed to force me to take this action, I guess I'll let it slide, and at least let you in on it. Also, don't call our master a monster." The demon in front of him told Tanjirou.

It was here did Tanjirou realize.

"Y-You look a lot like me…" Tanjirou mumbled something his demon opponent caught onto, and he smiled. Maniacally.

"Oh, so you do have some intelligence, do you?" The demon asked, clearly acting surprised that Tanjirou was able to find out who he was.

"But you're a demon… Your me, but a demon…" Tanjirou mumbled.

The demon in front of him stopped before he began to laugh out loud maniacally.

"Oh, this is rich… This is someone capable of withstanding his blood, and he's THIS naïve? Give me a break!" The demon chuckled, and immediately, Tanjirou began to grit his teeth.

He hated people looking down on him. That was how everyone treated him throughout his entire life. Even his father did this, and there was no way Tanjirou found himself useless.

He was able to do some things.

Like now, whoever this demon was, he would beat him down with his bare hands if he needed to.

The atmosphere suddenly changed, as a flaming vertex of a tornado began to encompass the landscape. Despite this, Tanjirou did not feel himself being impacted.

"What is this place… Is this my mind?" Tanjirou asked himself before he focused on the demon in front of him. "Crap! I probably shouldn't be distracted when there's a demon in front of me!" Tanjirou thought to himself.

Meanwhile, the demon opponent was clearly grinning.

"As you know, I am you. Except for a demon. I guess you could say I'm the demon version of you." The demon explained.

"So, what do I call you?" Tanjirou asked.

The demon deadpanned, "SERIOUSLY?! I TELL YOU SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE OR KILL YOU, AND THAT'S YOUR REACTION?" The demon began to laugh, while Tanjirou began to realize the situation he was in.

He just said that he was the demon version of him. But how did that make sense?

How was he harboring a demon inside of his supposed mind?

"What are you doing in my mind, then?" Tanjirou asked as he gritted his teeth and fists.

The demon smirked, "It's simple, that man has injected his blood into you. Don't you know anything about demons?"

Tanjirou nodded, "Of course I do! I was fighting one until I ended up here!" Tanjirou yelled back.

The demon sighed, "Of course you did…But didn't you ever know humans can be turned into humans?"

At this, Tanjirou was shocked. He didn't know that, nor was he ever told about that.

"So that's how they multiply?" Tanjirou asked, clearly shocked.

This was bad… That meant Nezuko was capable of being turned into a demon.

"Crap… So Nezuko… She might have been turned into a demon…" Tanjirou mumbled in panic.

"I wouldn't worry about your sister. Either she's dead, or she is long-serving our master." The demon tried to soothe Tanjirou's concerns, but that was the opposite.

"I would worry! She's my sister! Now, get out my way and let me see my sister!" Tanjirou yelled as he was suddenly feeling himself prop back to reality.

He was alive, and for some reason, he was trapped in his mind.

"Heh, I already told you, she's already gone." The demon explained. "But if you really are itching for a fight, just think of me as the demon version of you." Demon Tanjirou smirked, as he prepared himself for a fight.

"I don't care you who are, even if you are me, I'll fight you so I can see my sister!" Tanjirou yelled.

"Oh please, there's no way a human can win over a demon. You know, whenever a human is exposed to a demon's blood, they are immediately taken over, just like that. They wake up as mindless beasts, wanting to eat as many humans as they can savor." Demon Tanjirou smirked, while the human counterpart was holding himself tight.

His smell was suddenly amplified, and his sight was clearer. He was able to see out of his right eye, a sign that something was odd about him, at least in his physical form.

The demon blood from our master is instant mind control. The human thoughts of a person are eliminated, in place of a mindless beast that eventually develops into their demonic self. However, for a select few… The select few that resist and reject such blood, those require their demonic counterpart to literally fight the mental and physical manifestations of their human counterpart." Demon Tanjirou explained, as he was slowly approaching Tanjirou, who was backing up.

Demon Tanjirou smirked, as he was slowly approaching Tanjirou. "So, let me ask. Every human who is infected by their master's blood is always taken over by their demonic instincts. In all of Master's history, not one human has ever escaped the wrath of the master. What makes you think you are different?"

Tanjirou growled, "I have a sister to go back to." That was all he explained.

"So a sis-con?" Demon Tanjirou asked.

"What is that?" Tanjirou asked.

At this, demon Tanjirou grumbled, clearly not liking the naivety of this boy he was supposed to infect.

"Who do you think you are?" Demon Tanjirou asked, as he once again approached Tanjirou.

"What do you mean?" Tanjirou asked, clearly eyeing his demonic counterpart right back at him.

This, of course, made Demon Tanjirou smirk.

Before Tanjirou knew it, he found himself being bombarded with an onslaught of kicks and punches, that he couldn't really dodge or react to.

He felt himself being struck all across his body as the demon version of him launched him onto the ground.

"Ow…" Tanjirou mumbled as he got himself back up.

Demon Tanjirou looked a bit shocked before he grinned, "So you do have some fighting spirit in you? I guess I'll enjoy this." Demon Tanjirou smirked.

Tanjirou for his part, needed to figure out how he could win. If what he said was true, then perhaps he wasn't going to.

He realized right now that he possibly couldn't win this.

However, if he lost this battle, then Nezuko would be alone in this world.

And he couldn't allow that.

And so, despite the odds being stacked against him, he still had to fight.

For the remaining things, he had left.

And so, despite the pain he was feeling, he eyed Demon Tanjirou, as he prepared himself.

As Demon Tanjirou closed in on him, he began to smell something.

It was a similar smell to that monster that he detected beforehand before he ended up fighting Muzan.

However now, this individual had a similar smell. But it was less rotten, less foul, and less strong. This demon was weaker than Muzan.

And considering Tanjirou thought he put up a good fight against Muzan, he at least thought he could fare better against this demon.

And so, when Demon Tanjirou managed to get closer to Tanjirou, his nose began to pick up the arm that was about to strike his neck.

And so, as quick as his body could react, Tanjirou's hand raised up, and he grabbed the demon's hand before it could strike his neck.

Demon Tanjirou looked very shocked at what his human counterpart was doing.

"Did you actually block one of my attacks?!" Demon Tanjirou asked, clearly angered and shocked at what happened.

"I did…" Tanjirou thought before he felt his abdomen being kneed by Demon Tanjirou.

"Well, it appears your shock lasted longer than mine." Demon Tanjirou grinned.

To Tanjirou's shock, his demonic counterpart tried to bite him down right there, so he rolled out of the way as fast as he could.

"What the hell…" Tanjirou mumbled as he panted.

"Oh, come on, this is how the demon overpowers their human counterpart." Demon Tanjirou explains, "They eat them until they are no more."

And so, Tanjirou looked on, clearly trying to find a way to win against this demonic counterpart.

In the end, he was still sore from everything that his demonic counterpart was doing.

The next little altercation was clearly approaching, and this time Tanjirou knew he had to take offense.

Unfortunately, he had no way of managing to have the advantage. He was at a total disadvantage in every way possible.

And so, he had to think outside the box.

He first tried to land a punch toward his demonic counterpart.

"How pathetic…" Demon Tanjirou chuckled, however to his shock, Tanjirou was purposely leaving himself open.

His demonic counterpart merely chopped in right on the back, causing Tanjirou to fall. Tanjirou quickly rolled onto his back, as he looked up to see his demonic counterpart looking down.

"Now!" Tanjirou yelled to himself, as with his strength, he swiped his legs, causing his demonic self to fall.

"He has the same anatomy as me it seems, so I must be able to strike his vulnerable points!" Tanjirou exclaimed to himself, as he quickly got up, and elbowed Demon Tanjirou's stomach.

This caused the demon to cough up some blood, at the sheer brutality of the strike.

"Okay, you're more brutal than I thought…" Demon Tanjirou mumbled as he brought himself back up, waiting for his wounds to stop hurting.

Tanjirou had to continue.

Forcing himself to continue, he decided to use his nose to try and predict the attacks his demonic counterpart may try and perform.

And it was helping.

He managed to yank his arm inward to elbow the demon's face, having socked him in the face. This caused the demon to falter before Tanjirou socked another punch to the neck.

The demon fell to the ground coughing at the sudden punch before he growled at Tanjirou.

"Alright, that's enough playing." His demonic counterpart explained before he began to showcase his own demonic appearance, even more so.

Now, the flaming marks were connected to his face, and his arms and legs still had some marks on them.

This was concerning…

Demon Tanjirou now looks very menacing, and Tanjirou could smell the power increase his demonic counterpart was now showing…

"This is bad… I don't think I may be able to beat him now…" Tanjirou thought as he was trying his hardest now. Even if he was able to hold his own, now he was clearly outpaced…

Tanjirou sighed. He thought back to the time when his father had, with one strike, managed to strike down and kill a bear.

A large bear, very menacing. It was beyond Tanjirou's own expectations how his father did it. Considering how much more powerful the bear was than his sick father, in the end, his sick father managed to win.

It was something Tanjirou used to bestow himself… Something he thought of, to prove that nature was always having ways to break the status quo.

For Tanjirou, it was no different here. Even if this demon was stronger, quicker, or even better at fighting than Tanjirou was in every way, Tanjirou would still win.

He had to.

Especially, when he had his sister to lose. And that was unacceptable.

He couldn't leave Nezuko out there in the cruel world, alone, her entire family gone or murdered.

"I will return to you, Nezuko." Tanjirou gritted his teeth again, as he looked at the demon in front of him, trying to decide how he should try to fight this demon.

"How did Father fight that bear? How did he take it down in one hit?" Tanjirou asked himself. But he was so unsure. How was he supposed to beat a being that regenerated so quickly?

Tanjirou growled as he eyed his demonic counterpart with a pension. He was determined.

But at the same time, he was so unsure… How was he going to do this?

Nonetheless, with resolve, Tanjirou prepared himself for the power of his demonic counterpart.

There had to be a reason why humans were still here. If demons were bound to always overpower humans, then humans would have gone extinct by now.

Tanjirou steeled himself, preparing his body for anything possible.

Almost immediately, Demon Tanjirou charged at Tanjirou, and Tanjirou tried to dodge.

Unfortunately, he was too slow, and he found himself being struck on the side of his stomach by the demon's fist. He coughed up blood, feeling the fist almost go through his insides. Still, he was able to handle the pain, as he had dealt with worse pain before, thanks to Muzan.

Managing to hold himself in, he grabbed the demon by the neck, clutching it tight.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Demon Tanjirou asked, clearly surprised at what Tanjirou was doing.

"I'm trying to kill you!" Tanjirou yelled back.

"Still? Don't you know how futile it is? Demons will always beat humans." Demon Tanjirou told his human counterpart.

"Still! I must try! I cannot let my sister face this world alone!" Tanjirou yelled back. "I won't give you any sympathy if you try to separate me from her!"

Demon Tanjirou only grinned, clearly not caring for Tanjirou's own passions and reasonings.

Before Tanjirou could even comprehend anything, Tanjirou felt his own body being flung into the air.

Tanjirou gasped in shock at the sudden pain, as he was not even able to react to it. He then felt a strong kick onto his stomach as he went spiraling down.

Tanjirou felt his body hit the ground painfully, as all he could do was moan in pain.

The demon version of him chuckled, "Had enough?" He asked.

"N-Never…" Tanjirou mumbled as he tried to get up, only for him to be kicked down by his demon counterpart.

"How pathetic you are… Though I'll admit you gave me a run for my demonic form. I actually had to take you seriously, so I guess you can take solace in the fact that you were a lot more difficult than any other human." Demon Tanjirou smirked, as he opened his mouth, bearing his fangs as he was about to take a bit out of Tanjirou.

He would have enjoyed the savory taste of human flesh, especially since he would soon be able to take over the body and become the rightful owner.

Unfortunately, it wasn't that simple.

A simple grasp of his tongue caused him to gasp in shock. Then, to his pain, Tanjirou yanked his tongue out as hard as he could. This caused shockwaves of pain to spread across Demon Tanjirou as he growled in pain, before looking at Tanjirou.

"I will fight to stay as a human… Even if I die…" Tanjirou mumbled as he struggled to get up.

Demon Tanjirou merely eyed his human counterpart. "How annoying, you are only delaying the inevitable, and enduring more pain. How fun is that?" Demon Tanjirou commented.

"I've endured worse pain than many other people would have. I can handle anything." Tanjirou got back up, still steeled on defeating this demon.

"Your loss." Was all the demon mumbled, before he continued his beatdown on Tanjirou.

Tanjirou continued to get assaulted by his demonic counterpart, with him having no room to try and block the onslaught. There was nothing he could do.

Demon Tanjirou was able to strike across Tanjirou quickly and swiftly with such speed that he was unable to comprehend where the demon was, or where he was about to attack.

He first felt a slash to his collarbone, then a kick to his chest, a punch to his abdomen, he named it all. He was struck everywhere, with his demon opponent intent on taking over his body.

But even through that, he couldn't let that happen. He would resist until he won.

"It's not over, yet."

"It's not over until I win…"

Tanjirou grunted and gasped in pain as he felt his hip get struck this time, with a follow-up blow to his face causing him to recoil.

Tanjjrou gritted his teeth, and with the momentum, reared his head back forward to strike the demon in the nose.

"Ack!" Demon Tanjirou yelled in pain as he held his head in pain, "What the hell is your head made of?!"

Tanjirou gritted his teeth, as his own head was seemingly fine, undamaged, compared to the bleeding head of his demonic counterpart.

"If you truly are the counterpart of me, then why don't you have a hard head like me?" Tanjirou asked his demonic "self."

"Don't question my integrity!" Demon Tanjirou yelled as he was trying to punch Tanjirou as hard as he could.

To Tanjirou's shock, this time his smell was able to pick it up, and thus barely was able to dodge the strike.

"I see… So, if I infuriate him further, I may be able to cloud his judgment, and then be able to stand up to him…" Tanjirou thought.

"Is that so? I wouldn't have thought someone like you is literally me. You are nothing like me." Tanjirou chuckled, as he stared down at his demonic opponent.

"Of course, I'm you! I'm much better than you!" Demon Tanjirou exclaimed.

"You cannot be better than me," Tanjirou responded.

"How so? Your dork!" Demon Tanjirou asked, clearly wanting to see where his human counterpart was getting at with this.

"It's simple. Think about it, I'm pathetic and useless, right?" Tanjirou asked.

"Of course, you are pathetic and useless! Even your own father thought that!" Demon Tanjirou smirked.

"Well, then that makes you weak and pathetic as well." Tanjirou concluded, "After all, you can't multiply zero and get a higher number than that. If I'm zero, then no matter how many times you claim you are better than me, you're still zero!" Tanjirou pointed to his demonic counterpart.

"And what makes you think that you brat?!" Demon Tanjirou asked.

"You aren't as powerful as you think you are… You have the advantage over me in every way possible, but here you are struggling against one you think is pathetic and trash. So, tell me, demon, who is the pathetic and useless one here?" Tanjirou asked. "It's both of us!"

Demon Tanjirou merely eyed Tanjirou in a rage, "Alright, no more mercy for you."

The next thing Tanjirou knew, he felt himself being bombarded in every direction. He felt himself being struck across his body yet again.

"Damn, just how am I supposed to get over this?" Tanjirou thought to himself, "I thought getting him riled up would've made it easier for me to counter him…"

And while Tanjirou was realizing this, he was managing to smell the demon's attacks. However, the sheer ferocity of the demon made Tanjirou intimidated.

He was not holding back now. The demon seemed to be playing with Tanjirou by purposely trying to hit him with shallow swipes.

It seemed that both he and Muzan for some reason, had a sadist personality, wanting to torture and inflict pain on everything they encounter.

And poor Tanjirou had to bear the wounds yet again, just after he had seemingly managed to survive Muzan's torture.

He gasped as he felt his arm take the brunt of the damage, then his shoulder and chest.

He began to cough up blood, trying to punch back, only for his knuckles to feel like they were breaking.

Even his legs were strained, as he could move around as much as he could. His body was getting exhausted too, something demons seemingly couldn't. Either that, or they regenerated their stamina much quicker than any human could.

Anything Tanjirou did was ineffective, except for pushing his demonic counterpart to the floor, which only stretched the seemingly inevitable. Tanjirou gritted his teeth, clearly focused and trying to fight the demon off of him.

It wasn't until he fell on his back, did he feel smaller compared to the demon on top of him.

"G-Get off of me!" Tanjirou yelled, but the demonic version of him smirked.

"I don't think so. I think it's time I finally take control of you." Demon Tanjirou smiled maniacally, as he bared his fangs, which seemed a lot longer than usual.

Demon Tanjirou extended his claws, as he held Tanjirou down, and then stabbed Tanjirou right in his eye.

The same eye he had seemingly just been able to see through again, was now gone. Like a pick, it was plopped right out of his eye socket and into the mouth of the demon.

Tanjirou wanted to scream from the pain of feeling his eye being detached from his body.

"This pain… Why… Why must I experience this much pain again…?" Tanjirou asked himself, as he was trying to hold himself together.

"I must get up… But how?" Tanjirou asked before he thought.

"Right, it was all because of that man, Muzan… Why did he want my family… And why did he hate me specifically?" Tanjirou's mind was racing at this point since his time was critical right now. He needed to do something else, he was dead.

"But then when I tried to describe my appearance that could have ticked him off, I started to see the image of an adult… He had longer burgundy red hair than me, taller, with a metal sword… His eyes were also just a white sclera… Who is he?" Tanjirou asked himself.

He was trying to think.

"Skilled swordsmen…" Tanjirou's eyes widened. Of course, he's a skilled swordsman. "I remember being told that those in our family who had the birthmark on our foreheads had the potential to become very potent and strong swordsmen… The very one I have… Except it looks like a flame mark, rather than my faded one…"

Tanjirou growled as he was using his bare hands to punch the demon in the mouth, preventing him from trying to eat another part of him again, like his right eye.

"Come on, Tanjirou! Think! What do I do? Why is my family destined to be strong swordsmen?" Tanjirou asked himself, still holding the demon back, but feeling himself losing.

And as he felt his own body failing him, his thoughts began to go to a darker tone.

"I guess you really are useless… Tanjirou…" Tanjirou's eyes widened as he was thinking of the degradation he was put through.

The pain, the abuse, the torture he went through.

He had let his father train him until exhaustion and borderline starvation… He would be abused to no end… Just because of his inability to perform well in swordsmanship…

He would be kicked out in the middle of the night in a blizzard, expecting to make it down to the mountain whilst surviving and not suffering from hypothermia…

And that's not even mentioning to torture he went through by Muzan and the lowly comments Tanjirou's own father said to him…

How Muzan apparently hated him, and how the rest of his family probably did as well…

After all, if his birthmark was the reason, he was a black sheep of the family, then why couldn't he at least perform well in swordsmanship? Was his father perhaps a bad teacher? No, his other siblings managed to unlock their own affinities in breathing, but he couldn't…

He was just a failure in the eyes of most of his family… And by the world.

He was placed off as a lost cause, even his father told Muzan, and everyone else…

If anything, he was only good at dancing, and coal burning…

Wait…

"Didn't my siblings and father say that to properly perform a breathing technique, you had to breathe a certain way?" Tanjirou asked himself, as he was trying to remember the instances he talked to his father and siblings.

Although far and in between, it only made it easier for him to remember the little conversations he was able to have with them.

"That's it! Almost every breathing technique was required to do something a bit different! Some breathing required some to either take in more breath and hold it or to execute it out in short bursts!" Tanjirou thought.

Of course, he was doing that, but he assumed the way he was breathing was complementary with any known breathing style that would make sense.

Alas, there was another thing that brought Tanjirou to a mental standstill.

The Hinokami Kagura.

The same thing he was praised for yet was unable to do near his house. Whenever he tried to perform it near his father, he would suffer a "severe punishment."

"But isn't that like the Hinokami Kagura? It was what the book told me!" Tanjirou thought as he was sure that was what it said.

"To be able to dance from sunset to sunrise without break, one must learn to breathe the way of Hinokami, to then be blessed to dance alongside him for the time," Tanjirou remembered the very words of the book.

It was as if he was connecting two and two together.

They must have had a connection, especially since they both mentioned and talked about breathing a certain way to push past the limits regular humans could…

So then, why was he not allowed to do it near his house? Why did his father hurt him so badly for this?

He was truly confused about that, however now, he was sure.

Perhaps this was what he was meant to do…

Hell, even his father said he was much better at the Hinokami Kagura than him.

That must've meant something, right?

If so, then if what Tanjirou was thinking was right, then perhaps he could survive by using the Hinokami Kagura.

But then again, what other choice did Tanjirou have?

He had none.

He tried to defend himself to the best of his abilities, only for him to end up like this, his body damaged and beaten again, and his right eye missing…

He had to try. It was his last resort. If this didn't work, then he had tried everything possible…

Almost immediately, Tanjirou tried to mimic the breathing he did when he would dance the Hinokami Kagura.

He pushed his lungs to begin adapting to the new breathing he was putting himself through, and he grabbed the demon's hands and tried to swipe at them.

To his surprise, it worked somewhat, and he was able to at least match the demon in strength.

Though even then, he was still at a disadvantage…

Tanjirou panted as he got back up… The breathing technique worked, but it wasn't perfect…

He could feel his body wanning from the strain it was putting him on. But alas, the breathing style had managed to do had helped him.

"But then there's another issue… If I correctly remember this time, I must have a blade made of a metal that can absorb the sun's rays… How do I defeat this demon? No, how do I kill this demon?" Tanjirou asked, clearly trying to wonder what he was going to do now.

Tanjirou forced his lungs to breathe in, ignoring the strain it would place on him, as he was the one to charge toward his demonic counterpart this time.

"Don't think for a second you can beat me!" Demon Tanjirou yelled as something shocking happened to him.

Blood Demon Art: Biokinesis

Before Tanjirou knew it, two barbed wires began to protrude out of Demon Tanjirou, both replacing his actual arms.

Tanjirou gulped, as he remembered those to be almost exactly like the ones Muzan had used to strike Tanjirou down.

"Damnit, this demon has so many tricks…" Tanjirou thought grimly. "No matter, just follow the breathing, and perhaps I can dodge them…"

And so, Tanjirou carefully placed himself just away from the barbed wires as he was trying to analyze what he could do next.

This required total concentration in Tanjirou's mind.

Everything was at stake. He was fighting against a demon, a supposed superior being compared to him, and to make matters worse, he still had to be there for Tanjirou.

"I'll come back to you, Nezuko… Don't worry… Your older brother won't be a failure anymore." Tanjirou thought, as he carefully dodged another barbed wire, before rolling under another, and kicking another away.

"So my assumptions were right… I can smell them… They smell so rotten and that is letting me be able to detect them near me." Tanjirou thought. "Got to use this to my advantage…"

And so, Tanjirou continued to dodge them at speeds he wasn't even aware he was going at.

It was impressive, for a supposed unskilled boy who thought nothing of himself besides failure.

All he was doing was dancing, and he could feel it.

Ironically enough, dancing was helping him against the strained breathing would put on him otherwise.

It was almost as if he was dancing the Hinokami Kagura yet again.

And it was saving his life.

"Perhaps the Hinokami Kagura was more than I thought of, rather than a simple dance…" Tanjirou continued to ponder before he focused yet again.

"There!" Tanjirou yelled to himself in his mind, as he found an opening through the barbed wires, and with a mighty punch, he struck Demon Tanjirou right in the throat.

The demon coughed, as Tanjirou committed to another hook that sent him flying a bit away.

Demon Tanjirou was shocked.

"How?! How are you suddenly able to keep up with me? I am much stronger than you, and here you are, with no talent, you can strike me at my serious point!" Demon Tanjirou yelled, "I was told by Master you were talentless!"

Tanjirou gritted, "Is your master's name, Muzan?" And he already knew that was it when Demon Tanjirou clearly smelled angry.

Tanjirou smiled a bit, as he knew exactly that he was getting on this demon's nerves. Muzan was someone he would never forget, nor the weird connection he had with his father...

With his Hinokami Kagura, Tanjirou was confident that this time, he would be able to manage and deal with his aggression.

For the most part, Tanjirou decided that his demonic version was taking too long, so, Tanjirou immediately tackled his demon counterpart to the ground, trying his best to hold him down.

"What the hell do you think you are doing?" Demon Tanjirou asked as he kicked Tanjirou from him.

Tanjirou grumbled as he rolled to safety, quickly getting up, dodging a barbed wire meant to strike him down right there.

Tanjirou sighed before he went back into the fray. Jumping, quickly maneuvering, and extending his body way farther than he thought wasn't possible, he was clearly breaking the limits and he knew it,

He was supposed to be dead, but it was like he was designed to be fighting and dodging demons.

Especially once with whatever this was.

"Stop dodging my wires and get struck down!" Demon Tanjirou yelled, "Why are you so slippery?!"

Tanjirou sighed, "It's because you have the exact same one as your master, but weaker." Tanjirou explained. "From what I remembered, Muzan had like 8 wires coming out of him, whereas you only have 2. You claim to be stronger when you are just a shadow of what you could've been."

Demon Tanjirou was pissed off at what he was hearing.

"I will kill you… And be so glad when I eat you… For how much of a scumbag you are, I'll torture you and eat you as slowly as I can." Demon Tanjirou smirked, only for Tanjirou to smirk back.

He then chuckled silently, "Please… Do you think your threats of torturing me will threaten me? Do you actually think that?"

"Of course, it works for everyone." Demon Tanjirou explained.

"Well, it won't for me. Once again, your so-called master has already beaten you to that. I know the pain and feeling of getting my limbs torn off, my skin slashed, my eye sockets ripped out of me, and feeling the pain I didn't even know I could possibly feel thanks to him."

"I pity you and other demons who must've been turned into one by him, for he must've had an amazing time with your unconscious body…" Tanjirou smirked, "So I dare you to do your worst. Why do you think I didn't yell, scream, or even beg for mercy as you were expecting, huh?"

For the most part, Demon Tanjirou looked very shocked.

And that was because Tanjirou made a point. The most he did was make a noise of discomfort. Almost any other human would have screamed or yelled in pain, but Tanjirou didn't.

The reason was simple. He remembered the pain so vividly that the second time wasn't as bad.

They always say things hurt the most the first time you do it, and then you slowly become used to it. The simple matter of desensitization.

In short, Tanjirou got used to the pain he felt, and he came out of Muzan's torture, a different being.

He had awoken a monster, and Demon Tanjirou was his first victim.

"This is impossible… How can someone like you survive being tortured by him? Of course! It's because you are turning into a demon! But even then, how do you remember so clearly? How did you not fall into despair, and let the monster consume you? How?!"

Demon Tanjirou was yelling at this point.

He quickly tried to bring his barbed wires down on Tanjirou, only for him to sidestep, and do something risky.

He grabbed the barbed wires and struck them as hard as he could into the ground. The atmosphere was cracking, the flaming tornado was flickering back to the calm skies that he originally entered this world in.

Demon Tanjirou was trying to grip his barbed wires back, but when he couldn't he realized he was stuck, especially after Tanjirou struck him once again, using the stuck barbed wires to treat him as a punching bag.

It was working until Demon Tanjirou got out.

Tanjirou was expecting this, and he grabbed properly grabbed one of the barbed wires with specific precision, and although he felt his hand becoming bloodied by the stab, he managed to, by using his teeth, cut the blade off that connected him from Demon Tanjirou.

Tanjirou was shocked that he was able to even use his teeth to actually break apart a potential weapon he could use.

Now, Tanjirou had a barbed wire tip that he could potentially use to kill this demon.

And so, he charged, and this time, slashed across Demon Tanjirou's body. He was doing the exact same thing, mimicking the breathing style he did, and pretending and imagining he was dancing.

It worked.

Just like the last time, Demon Tanjirou was too confused to even comprehend what to do. It was almost foreign what Tanjirou was doing.

It wasn't like the previous breathing styles that he could predict based on the forms that many demon slayers had.

No, this was something he hadn't seen in ages or even centuries.

Not until…

"No…" Demon Tanjirou mumbled. He was suddenly getting flashbacks of what appeared to be another man.

The worse part? He looked eerily similar to Tanjirou, albeit with some small differences.

"No… He's the spitting image of that man… NO WONDER MASTER AS IT IS FOR YOU!" Demon Tanjirou exclaimed.

However, Tanjirou could smell that it wasn't of anger… But rather… Of fear.

Was this demon beginning to fear Tanjirou?

At first, Tanjirou was shocked. He was never seen as threatening before… Not by humans, and certainly not by demons.

He only knew the monikers of useless, worthless, and a disappointment… Either from his father, or Muzan…

Perhaps he was called other stuff, but at that point, he filtered everything out to help deal with the constant spiral of guilt and worthlessness he felt.

In the end, the fact he was seen as threatening was a breath of fresh air for Tanjirou. It was something Tanjirou was seeing as something he wouldn't mind.

"So, I'm terrifying him? I could use this to my advantage… Especially since he intimidated me before, I can do the same as him!" Tanjirou yelled in his mind, as he decided now to perform the final strike.

With nothing else but determination and a lust for empowerment he was now feeling, as he was now on the other side of intimidating his opponent, Tanjirou took the strike.

He charged toward Demon Tanjirou, who immediately launched a barbed wire toward Tanjirou.

Tanjirou quickly twisted his body, jumping to spin his body over the first one, and striking the second with the remnants of the barbed wire he had on him, kicking the first one away.

He quickly landed, before closing the distance between him and the demon. Arching his barbed wire back, he prepared to strike the demon in the correct fashion.

This time, his memories of forced swordsmanship that his father had forced him to perform were coming in handy for Tanjirou.

With a swipe, Tanjirou managed to, within the proper distance, slash his barbed wire across, striking the neck of Demon Tanjirou.

He did it with such strength, his lungs filling with strain and air from the breathing style he was doing, before he struck out, causing Demon Tanjirou's head to become decapitated.

Demon Tanjirou was flabbergasted. "You idiot! You cut off my head, with my own barbed wire!"

Tanjirou sighed in relief before he quickly realized he didn't have a proper sword.

He had to do something.

So, with nothing else, he grabbed the head of the demon before he began to run away from the body.

"Don't think you can kill me just be decapitating me in the head!" Demon Tanjirou yelled as Tanjirou quickly ran off.

"I must find a way to kill this demon! But how?!" Tanjirou asked himself. "Please! I need a thought right now!" Tanjirou begged for whatever his mindset had.

Apparently, his entire mind and life right now were one big puzzle. The littlest of things he had endured throughout his life was now coming out to him right now.

Was this the battle he was to have? The reflections of our past? Our experience? Was he trying to reach a certain point? Even though he had such a tragic past, he was learning that everything happened for a reason…

"So probably, other demons were already vulnerable because of their past? Because those who have a past like mine probably have nothing left to lose…" Tanjirou thought.

"But even then, I should probably focus on killing this demon… But how the hell do I do that?" Tanjirou asked, clearly confused about what to do.

Tanjirou continued to try and fight the body of Demon Tanjirou before he realized that the barbed wires were coming back again, so he continued to dodge them, as he tried to ignore the foul language of his demonic counterpart.

"What do I do… What do I do?!" Tanjirou asked as he was trying to find out what to do.

He was trying to go through his mind when he was realizing something.

"Demons… They are creatures that eat humans. In nature, almost every species has something to worry about. A creature that eats them. For us humans, they are demons." Tanjirou's eyes widened at that.

"Why am I remembering this?" Tanjirou asked himself, clearly confused, "What is the purpose of me remembering this?" Tanjirou thought.

Tanjirou mumbled to himself, as he was clearly trying to decipher everything.

"What is my mind reminding me of this right now?" Tanjirou continued to ask. He was clearly trying to get the application of this, but in the end, it was somewhat vague.

Unless…

"Wait… If I remember correctly, the demon told me that for one to take over and win the fight, the demon usually eats the human in their mind…" Tanjirou thought, "Does that mean, I have to eat the demonic version of myself to retain and take control of my body again?"

Tanjirou was clearly confused, as he was debating it, eyeing the demon's head. "So, do I have to eat the demon in order to wake up and see Nezuko again?" Tanjirou asked herself.

He began to stare down at his demonic counterpart before the thought got stronger in his mind.

Of course, a part of him didn't want to do this. A part of him felt like he would become a cannibal. In the end, the thought of telling him to eat the demon became stronger, as he yearned to end this right now.

Now, he had to end the battle right here, and finally reunite with his sister, Nezuko.

Tanjirou gritted his teeth, cringing as he knew what he was going to do would be incredibly weird, or unexpected.

With a mighty bite, he suddenly began to eat the face of his demonic counterpart.

"What the hell? What the fu-" Demon Tanjirou couldn't end his sentence, as he was now eating the vocal cords of the demon.

All the while Tanjirou was trying his hardest not to feel guilty.

To make everything worse, he found himself liking how the demon was tasting. The first bite was the most difficult, but now he was able to eat through it.

Eventually, the entire face managed to be completely consumed by Tanjirou.

Almost in sync, the body of Demon Tanjirou fell, and Tanjirou proceeded to head towards the body, clearly deciding to continue consuming the rest of the demon.

It wasn't something he didn't want to do, but he had to in order to see his sister again.

"I will see you again, Nezuko… I will come back to you." Tanjirou thought as he ate the arms of the demon.

The legs, the arms, the chest, the internal organs, and even the barbed wires. He ate everything from his demonic self.

Of course, it felt weird for Tanjirou, as he never had thought of cannibalism. Until now.

Now, he was eating the demon whole. However, by the time he hate the demon's arms, legs, and chest, the body began to dissolve.

Tanjirou sighed in relief, as he had done it.

He beat the demon in his mind with nothing but his bare hands. He managed to beat the demon down, and he was tired.

His body didn't forget about the pain and injuries he had, and he was forced to lie down. He grunted, laying on his back before he sighed.

He could see the calm, blue skies in his mind as he was able to finally feel at ease. Tanjirou had successfully managed to beat the demon.

And he was proud.

It took him to go through almost all his memories, however, he did it.

He beat the demon. He managed to do something. "I'm not useless… I'm not worthless… I did it…"

Of course, he didn't get out unscathed, and he could feel that his mind was damaged. His own clear blue sky was beginning to show some flames around it, but aside from the occasional flaming tornado, it wasn't anything major.

If anything, it looked tamed, and Tanjirou knew why.

He had managed to do what nobody else had managed to do.

He had done what apparently no human had managed to do.

He had managed to beat a demon, in a supposed bare-fisted fight. He won against his demonic version and retained his human mind.

And while he seemingly had some damage to his mind, and would probably forget some stuff, as represented by the weird hybrid of clear blue skies, whilst there was an occasional flaming tornado, which represented that the demon version of him was still there.

In a sense, Tanjirou had managed to retain his humanity, but he still had a demon mind.

He would wake up as a demon and probably want to feast on humans, and that terrified him.

However, in the end, he managed to do what no other human had ever done.

And that showed Tanjirou he was able to do something. He wasn't useless or worthless. He had a purpose now.

And that was to protect Nezuko.

For he was the first human to beat and reject Muzan's blood.

A.N / So this is a chapter that I was struggling a bit to write because I wanted to show the dual nature of Tanjirou's mind, especially the fight scene. I wanted to make it very intense, or close-witted, as I wanted to represent some specific things within the fight, such as the backstories, and the quotes that were continuously repeated. Those quotes and memories will define Tanjirou, and because they are vastly different, it causes a different Tanjirou.

He still cares for Nezuko, as you can see, but he still has some doubt about his capabilities, since he's always been played down as weak.

And even if he is able to defeat the demon and retain his human mind, he still suffered some injuries, and hence some things will be gone from him. Essentially, he won't be a normal human ever again, or at least for a very long time.

Also, Nezuko pretty much goes through the same issue, but her demon side wins for now, and she will have to battle it eventually again when she becomes more human-like. I will show Nezuko's battle when we get there but just know that Tanjirou is different to her than a demon, as he will have his own struggles since he battled the demon in his mind already.

However, that isn't to say the demon Tanjirou is completely out of him. There will be occasional situations where the demon will reap its face to Tanjirou.

Also, if there are any questions that need to be answered, let me know, and if there are any typos, also let me know. I do want to make sure these stories are proper for the reader to read, and I want to make sure I do this story right, rather than rushing it. But anyways, I'll see you for the next chapter, which I think will be more fun to write.

Height: 5'1" (155cm)

Weight: 102Ibs

Appearance Change: Vines now spread across her eyes and arms.

Abilities:

Tanjirou Kamado:

Advanced Smell: Tanjirou's sense of smell is more advanced than the average human, rivaling that of many demons, managing to now smell the oncoming attacks of demons and humans, and the emotions of others.

Hinokami Kagura: While Tanjirou is yet to learn it as a breathing technique, he does know the breathing style, or in a sense, the way to breathe to be able to gain the benefits of it.

Changing Birthmark: Still an inactive demon slayer mark, however, now in the intermediary stage to represent Tanjirou's willpower.

Nezuko Kamado:

Infrared Vision: Nezuko has an unusual sense of sight and vision. She can see and observe more wavelengths than those normal humans and demons. This allows her to see both infrared light and UV lights, giving her more ability in seeing demons' trails, and where humans go. She can also use this to predict the weather pattern, and heat regulation of an individual, or even emotion-intel.

Strong Legs: Just like how Tanjirou has an abnormally hard head, Nezuko has strong legs. They are usually capable of stopping many humans in their trucks and are often compared to kangaroo legs. As to demons, they can stop them in their tracks as well.
