Nezuko's POV

When Nezuko woke up from her weird dream. She had no idea nor recollection of what she was, where she was, and who she was.

When she saw the figures of what appeared to be food, Nezuko desperately tried to feast on the food that was placed right there.

She was so hungry, so desperate to eat it… Almost as if something foreign was yearning for it.

All the while, that was what appeared to be on a white surface, of falling white particles.

She would have eaten that food. All that red liquid and delicious pale meat, until another person tried to stop her.

He was restraining her, trying to get her away from the food.

At first, Nezuko was angered and thought that this individual was taking her away so that he could eat the food on his own.

However, that was when she noticed he was burying the body in the ground.

Just why was he doing that?

Nezuko was full of questions. Nezuko didn't even know her name. All she knew was that she was a being, and that she had her preferences, foods, and fears. All are purely innate. It was like she lost her entire learning experience, after the process.

All she could do was remain still once she no longer could sense the food near her. She was now a still being.

The only thing she knew about that entire ordeal was her name.

The boy, who seemed to look a bit like her, called her Nezuko.

"Is that my name?" Nezuko thought, clearly asking the question, but eventually getting the answer once the boy continued to call her that.

The other boy seemed to have a strange sharp object, that she recognized as dangerous, perhaps innate.

Therefore, when she saw this boy who was calling her the same name, Nezuko, repeatedly, trying to protect her, she had the urge to protect this person.

Just who was this person? She was confused.

However, even despite this, she felt a gnawing side of her trying to protect him.

She didn't know why, but considering a part of her was telling her to protect him, she did that. Perhaps it was her morals and sense of justice, she placed herself between the man with the blade, and the boy who was calling her Nezuko.

Eventually, and before she knew it, she was blocked out…

The next thing she knew, she was going down with the very same individual who was calling her Nezuko.

Once again, she was unsure how to process everything. Perhaps she was slow at pacing everything around, she wasn't sure.

All she knew now, was that the boy's name was Tanjirou, she was sent to live with an older man named Urokodaki, and that her name was Nezuko.

That was the brink of all she knew so far…

She knew she was getting back some memories, but it was slow. She didn't even remember anything.

All she knew was that Urokodaki told Tanjirou something and that she was now having to go down and learn.

"Nezuko." Nezuko turned to face the boy whose name was called Tanjirou.

"We're going to be trying to hike up the mountain back to Urokodaki's, to do it before sunrise. We have to worry about traps that will hurt us, alright?" Nezuko only nodded at what her supposed friend was telling her.

She was confused about who Tanjirou was to her exactly, but for some strange reason, she felt as if she had a deep connection to him. As if they had a previous connection.

But alas, as much as Nezuko tried, she couldn't remember.

That was until she and Tanjirou began to try and hike up the mountain.

Almost immediately, Nezuko and Tanjirou kept falling and hitting the traps. It was painful and somewhat humbling. For the most part, Nezuko and Tanjirou managed to get around three-quarters up the mountain, before they were forced to run into a place of darkness once the sun began to rise.

It was an innate feeling, and Nezuko felt her entire system spike in fear and worry. It was the worst of the innate feelings, and Nezuko could tell that Tanjirou was also having those fears. The two quickly ran into a mountain.

And because they had to wait until nighttime, Nezuko decided to sleep until then.

That was when she began to dream about some memories.

And the strange thing… Most of those memories center on that boy… Tanjirou…

Why was she always dreaming of him? Was it because they were close? It would make sense for her to then be thinking around those senses.

Throughout those dreams, however, that was when she got more information.

She learned more about the experiences she was experiencing now.

And as she dreamed, she began to understand something more. Tanjirou was calling Nezuko something else when talking to the man in the half-and-half haori.

She was trying to paint the word in her head. It started with a s, but she was unsure…

She was hoping for a memory, then she got it.

When he was protecting her to the best of his ability, it showed a strong bond. A bond that the two must have had.

Almost like…

A family…

Was Tanjirou her brother?

Nezuko wanted to ask her brother then, but she was beginning to realize that her voice was not there.

She was mute. She couldn't even make any form of noise. No form of response. She was just mute, in the sense that not only could she speak like her brother, Tanjirou, but also that she was unable to speak any form of noise.

She couldn't even hum. She only was able to make movements of her eyes and head to get across that she understood what her brother was saying.

It was to the point that Nezuko had to always call Tanjirou as, "her brother," so that she wouldn't forget that.

No wonder the two felt protective over each other. She also could decipher that he was older than her, by around a year, considering his overall presence, with a protective aura around him.

No doubt in Nezuko's mind the development that was happening.

So, when it was their second attempt to finally manage to get up the mountain, Nezuko understood the task more…

However, that's when she began to realize something. Not only was her vision adept at detecting unusually large and small wavelengths, but this could also help her in identifying sneaking traps.

She was beginning to remember specific interactions with her brother now.

Now that she remembered who Tanjirou was to an extent, it now allowed her to unlock a bit more of her memories regarding her brother. It was almost like she unlocked a key to access more.

It seemed that as she perhaps explored and interacted with more stuff, she would discover more about herself.

That was that. Nezuko now knew that she and Tanjirou were siblings and family.

Perhaps the only remaining family.

And that changed Nezuko's perception. She had someone to protect. Someone to look after. Someone to care for, and bond with. Even if she couldn't talk, she was finally able to understand her purpose. She was not just a random person or demon, what the other guy called both her and her brother, she was the sister of someone…

Little did she know of the memories she could potentially unlock more of…

Tanjirou seemed to have a presence of authority around him, at least that's what Nezuko thought. Seeing her brother now commanding her around, giving her warnings and advice on what they were doing, made Nezuko realize her brother was a protective individual. He was someone who took the initiative and acted accordingly, even if he seemed hesitant to.

He was someone who seemed quick to action, yet composed, and humble. With the qualities of a kid, he seemed as mature as an adult. This showed the best in his facial expressions.

Her brother always had a resting face of a slight frown. It wasn't bad, but it was developed through years of experience, Nezuko deciphered. Almost as if he had gone through events that forced him to grow up.

Events that made him a protective figure. And yet, he had the tragedy behind him… Almost as if he felt like a failure… She could sense immense guilt coming from her brother…

He rarely laughed, but he always gave a small smile whenever he was talking to someone like her. And yet, his eyes remained with the dull red hue, the black cat-like pupil staring back, giving a sense of loss and stress… But also, pain, and trauma…

Did her brother have other people to protect at the time, and they were all gone now? Nezuko couldn't unlock more memories.

She wished she could straight up ask Tanjirou these questions. He seemed to also be like her, and yet he was able to talk, almost with no problem. She had all the problems in the world when it came to getting her voice heard, and all because of something she couldn't piece together.

Alas, it meant Tanjirou was the one who told Nezuko many things, which also included some orders like her going to sleep. Many times, the demands were just innocent, simple acts, but it got to a point that she wished she could communicate with him to address some miscommunication errors the two were having.

It sometimes frustrated her, but she knew she couldn't blame Tanjirou.

Nezuko and Tanjirou never had the blessing of being safe. They always had to worry about the sun, some other guy with a sword trying to slice their necks off, and the stress of trying to complete this training.

Her brother, Tanjirou seemed to have had it the hardest, for he was always taking damage and injury. It was confusing Nezuko, as she could have sworn, she saw that Tanjirou was acknowledging the traps.

Seeing her brother continuously get beaten up by the traps over and over. It made Nezuko oddly angry.

It made her feel oddly lighthearted as if she had an experience like this before…

Where was this happening?

When they failed for the second time, they only got above the first attempt, but the sun meant they still had to seek refuge in the same cave as before.

This frustrated Nezuko, who only fell asleep.

And it was on the second trial of failing the training, did Nezuko dream of the exact thing she was referring to. The exact thing that she felt was like back then, when Tanjirou was getting hurt by the traps.

She saw her brother being beaten by someone older than both. However, they looked familiar.

When Tanjirou yelled at the individual, begging them to stop, Nezuko realized what was happening.

This was that man.

She couldn't even remember who that name was… But what she did know, was that she felt his presence when she was around the house, and before she knew it…

She blacked out…

That was until she saw her brother trying to fight with the man. It was tragic. Tanjriou did not stand a chance against the individual in question, and he was beaten badly.

The fact Nezuko was unable to do anything made her feel strangely bad about herself. She was wondering exactly why this had happened. But if she was remembering correctly, this was another memory…

Was this before or after she spotted that man with the blade? Everything was blurry, but what Nezuko did know, was that that guy was responsible for hurting Tanjirou.

And likewise, Tanjirou being hurt by the traps was bringing back those memories, of seeing that man brutally beat and torture her brother over and over until her brother collapsed, unable to do anything.

Nezuko growled in her mind at the sudden treatment she saw. She already could see that her brother had gone through a lot.

He had the hands to prove it, the scars on his face and body, the ragged, rough hands that never seemed smooth, clearly from years of labor.

Her brother went through a lot, and to see him continue to struggle, hurt Nezuko.

She saw how Tanjirou lost his right eye and his body entirely trying to defend her. She saw how Tanjirou was desperate enough to bite down on the stranger's neck, out of pure desperation, only for the stranger to lash out barbed wires at her brother, mangling his body onto a tree, as he began to bleed out.

She saw how Tanjirou was ripped, limb by limb by the man, all that man's satisfaction. Nezuko saw the pain her elder brother went through.

Nezuko wasn't truly sure what happened after that, as that was when she blacked out.

When she did wake up, she woke up to the smell of euphoria. The smell of instinct, of food that she desperately wanted to eat.

When she tried to get there, however, her brother, yet again blocked her. And whilst she and Tanjirou fought occasionally about preventing one another from doing something, this was one of the few times Nezuko was glad her brother had stopped her from doing what she did.

No wonder her brother was so protective of her… and vice versa. The fact that both were brutally beaten by that individual said a lot about who exactly that individual was. He seemed to have no remorse for what he did.

And if Nezuko did see properly in her mind, then she also saw the dead bodies of some other people she felt torn about. Some looked younger, and one looked older. Even then, she was unable to decipher them.

What she did know was that they were close to Nezuko, albeit a bit more torn compared to her older brother.

Her brother was the older one, and so it made sense why Tanjirou was always protective, always the first in the defense. Perhaps her brother felt guilty for letting these people die.

If that was the case, then why did Nezuko have a torn opinion of these people when thinking about her brother?

So, when Tanjirou was the one leading both Nezuko and himself through the mountain, both knew of the time limit we had. Until the sun came out, they had to make it back.

This was their second time climbing the mountain, and each time Urokodaki gave them the same disappointed look.

"You failed, again," Urokodaki explained to the two. She remembers the saddened look Tanjirou would give before he would go to sleep.

It was quite unfortunate Nezuko couldn't talk. While she could understand and make out everything, she couldn't give a proper sentence or even a word. Nothing was coming out of her mouth, and it scared her.

However, now was a time when she had to be strong. Now was the time she had to be there for her brother. It was always her brother who took the hardship of work, whether it was humiliating, or even labour-like. Even if she didn't remember, she assumed that because her brother was always performing the leads, she assumed that Tanjirou was the type to let himself be overworked when needed.

Nezuko could tell that her brother was not sleeping like her. He would always still be up when she fell asleep, and when she woke up, he was still there, awake. This meant that he had remained awake this entire time, waiting for her to wake up, to get her proper sleep.

Nezuko growled at herself. At her failures, as she was hoping Tanjirou could get a break. Alas, he didn't, and instead of going to rest, he and Nezuko immediately ran down the mountain. Nezuko could tell that Tanjirou was determined and wanted to get this over. He wanted to succeed, no matter the cost.

Of course, Urokodaki was not a fan, and despite commemorating the fact that Tanjirou was incredibly determined, Nezuko felt that her brother was once again working hard on himself. It was the kind of person Tanjirou was. Both she and Tanjirou were fighting an uphill battle, on all fronts.

When Nezuko tried to get her brother's attention, Tanjirou only gave Nezuko a sad smile. "I'm fine, Nezuko. We'll get through this."

This did not soothe Nezuko's worries, not at all. She wanted her brother to sleep, to rest, and he was not doing that.

When that was done, Nezuko and Tanjirou once again went down the mountain, for their third time of the training entrance. According to Urokodaki, they were able to try as many times as they want, for a lot of Urokodaki's former students had failed the entrance a couple of times. Only one person managed to do it on the first attempt. When Tanjirou tried to ask Urokodaki who that person was, Urokodaki remained quiet, before kicking Tanjirou down the forest.

Nezuko freaked out and ran to follow him.

Tanjirou was always strong-willed, and hard-working. Now was Nezuko's time to be there for her brother, and to make sure he doesn't overwork himself, just like back home.

Just like those days when the village would call Mother down to tell them Tanjirou was resting in one of their beds, having collapsed from sheer exhaustion.

It said a lot about Tanjirou's personality, and how willing he was to work himself to the ground.

So, when Tanjirou began to fall into the traps, Nezuko looked skeptical. She was sure Tanjirou could recognize where the traps were. Even his clumsiness wouldn't have caused him to get hurt that frequently in every trap.

But she couldn't talk. She knew what he was doing.

And when she thought back to all the previous attempts at getting up the mountain, Nezuko knew very well what her brother was doing.

Even if Nezuko's memories seemed to have been lost, or at least locked away due to her demon transformation, that didn't mean her mental processing was any worse.

If anything, it was better, since her brain was wanting to fill up its capacity for memories. The result was that she was more critical in analyzing the environment around her. But even then, her mind was under tremendous pressure due to her demonic status.

But even in that, Nezuko knew exactly what her brother was doing.

He was taking all the punches, the hard work, and the physical labor, just for his family. He was scared for the others to be as hurt as him, and so he continued to be the punching bag, just to give us some extra prestige.

He always did this, for both previous two tries, Tanjirou was doing the same thing, and Nezuko hated this.

Tanjirou wanted to prove to Urokodaki he was useful. She could tell that Tanjirou was trying to protect her, whilst also proving to Urokodaki that he was capable. He probably thought that because he was a demon, that meant he was under more pressure to compete with it, especially with Urokodaki telling them how much of an advantage they had over other demon slayers.

This caused a bit of a strain on Tanjirou, as Nezuko was observing how much her brother was working. Considering she was also being taken care of, by Tanjirou, he was overexerting himself, especially by getting himself injured by the traps instead of Nezuko.

Every time Tanjirou left to get himself hit by a trap, he had a sense of a protective aura. A reason to protect and live. But behind all of that, lay an insecure kid who seemingly felt worthless, and also held a lot of pain in his character and figure.

To Nezuko, it was somewhat confusing.

Why was her brother thinking he was useless? Why was he looking so pained?

Her brother doesn't smile genuinely. The closest she got was the sad, small smile he gave, telling Nezuko that he was alright.

That was a lie. And that fact Tanjirou hid it behind a small smile terrified her because it made her how reassuring the smile looked.

Tanjirou was an emotional being. But he was forced to hide it all down for her. He was the eldest brother, and he felt the need to be a role model. He seems to be holding a giant strain of force on him, which he was forced to hide to be a role model and a guardian to Nezuko.

So, when Tanjirou walked too causally towards a trap with a knife about to pierce his side, Nezuko pounced him away.

"Nezuko! What are-"

Tanjirou couldn't finish his sentence when Nezuko slapped his face and shook her head.

"What…" Tanjirou mumbled, "Why are you angry?"

Nezuko wasn't angry, she was crying. She was getting teary. She hated seeing her brother get hurt. She hated seeing her brother collapse. She hated seeing her brother work himself to the end, just to give us some small rewards.

It was almost as if he was being a labor worker, and she didn't want that. She hated seeing her brother get the brunt of the abuse, the labor, and the pain of the world just to protect his family the best he could.

She knew that Tanjirou was even more protective of her than ever, especially after the incident with that demon. She knew Tanjirou was probably feeling like a failure.

It would have been so much easier if Nezuko was able to talk or label that she knew Tanjirou was purposely hurting himself from the traps, just so she wouldn't get hurt, but none of that mattered if Tanjirou had a say.

Nezuko clenched her hand as Tanjirou again ran into a trap, falling into a hole with a spike on the ground.

"Oww…" Tanjirou mumbled as he clenched his chest in pain, having been struck by the spikes.

Once again, Nezuko clenched her fist. If Nezuko had fallen, she would have felt better protecting her brother.

However, even when she did it, her brother's reaction to her getting hurt would have only made her feel bad about herself. No doubt would Tanjirou get emotional and begin to blame himself for the injury if she had gotten it instead. He wanted to be a protector, and yet he failed failure.

Nezuko knew that Tanjirou probably blamed himself for their current failure of making it up the mountain, and Nezuko wanted to comfort her brother, telling him it wasn't his fault, and to stop blaming himself and feeling he needed to do everything again.

He didn't need to bear the burden of this challenge. Even if Nezuko seemed to be unable to talk, that didn't mean she was unable to think and perceive everything around her.

As Nezuko helped her brother out the hole, she held onto his arm tightly, when he tried to run immediately.

"Nezuko, what's wrong?" Tanjirou asked. "We should continue. Every second we stay still, the higher likelihood of time we're wasting."

Nezuko clenched his hand stronger, and it was here did she knew Tanjirou was getting the picture. As much as he didn't want to admit it, Nezuko could tell Tanjirou was lying.

He hid it all behind that same, sad, small, smile. The same smile that Tanjirou always gave to his sister whenever he wanted to reassure her everything was fine.

"You're angry with me?" Tanjirou asked. "I know, we've been doing this for over a week... Maybe if I was stronger and more resilient, we could have done it in the first place…"

Nezuko growled at her brother in response, pointing to the hole down there, and the chest wound Tanjirou was now healing. There was no more blood dripping, but it was still fully recovering, as the scar tissue was still there.

Nezuko sighed before she pointed to the hole, and then to her brother, clearly trying to communicate with her brother.

"The traps?" Tanjirou asked, and Nezuko facepalmed. "Don't worry Nezuko, I'm sure everything will be alright." And again, Tanjirou gave his sister that smile again.

Nezuko wanted to smack Tanjirou in the face.

She was trying so hard to not make Tanjirou be his reckless self, taking the punch for his family. He should let his family take some punches when it was needed.

But alas, Tanjirou felt obligated to protect his family, no matter the cost. And since she was his only family left, she knew Tanjirou would only be more protective of her, no matter the circumstances.

Tanjirou had failed to protect her sister before, and he wasn't going to fail again, no matter the costs regarding his state and health.

And she hated that.

She hated how her brother did this.

She wanted to tell her brother to stop. The amount of embarrassment he went through just for his family was insane. Sure, this may make one thrive for a protective brother like Tanjirou, but for Nezuko, it became unhealthy.

Nezuko shook her head, pointing to the trap, and then Tanjirou himself. She repeated it before she then pointed to his scar.

She was also hoping Tanjirou's sense of smell could give him the message. She was hoping he could smell the disappointment and anger coming off her.

She could sense that Tanjirou himself was confused or outright denying what he was thinking. She could feel the emotions of Tanjirou, due to the distribution. And so, she kicked Tanjirou in the groin.

"ACK!" Tanjirou groaned as he clutched his groin in pain, trying to alleviate the pain. "Nezuko! That hurt!" Tanjirou grumbled as he was breathing to try and reduce and straighten back up.

Nezuko stomped her foot on the ground and then turned back on him.

"Nezuko, what's wrong?" Tanjirou asked, as he finally got up, having managed to ease the pain.

Nezuko facepalmed herself, clearly trying so hard to give Tanjirou the message.

"Are you mad about the traps?" Tanjirou asked.

Nezuko nodded, specifically pointing towards Tanjirou.

"You…" Tanjirou's eyes widened, "You're mad at me?"

Nezuko nodded angrily.

She then pointed to the trap, then back to Tanjirou, before she fake ran to show the reckless nature Tanjirou was doing.

Tanjirou got the message, and he looked down in shame, "You know I've been running into them intentionally?"

Nezuko nodded angrily, before she pointed to him, and raised her shoulders.

"Why was I doing that? It was to make sure you don't get hurt." Tanjirou explained.

Tanjirou, for his part, smiled sadly, "I'm sorry Nezuko, I just am doing my job as a big brother, I'm protecting you from the traps, even if I get hurt."

Nezuko shook her head. She didn't want this. She knew exactly what her brother was doing, and he knew what he was doing. Even when she told him not to do this, he still did it.

Why…

Why must her brother always hold the world's weight on the world? Why is he willing to go along with it? Why does he just smile at the face of everything… even when it hurts him so much?

If Nezuko was the one doing this, she would have lost it a while ago.

Perhaps Tanjirou just took it from someone else, or it was a sense of guilt that made him justify the pain he endured.

Nezuko wasn't sure, but she ironically, wanted Tanjirou to be truer to his thoughts. She knew he was suffering, and she didn't even know why. All she knew was that he was holding everything down just for the sake of those he cared for.

And so, Nezuko stayed behind Tanjirou. Even when she wanted to protect her brother, she knew Tanjirou's guilt would make Nezuko feel bad for taking the bullet for her brother when she did.

She wished she could do more. She wished she could prove how formidable she was.

She watched her brother get sliced by knives that Urokodaki had put down. She watched as Tanjirou was getting hurt left and right. When a trap led to a drop in a hole, Tanjirou gripped Nezuko tightly, to protect her from the fall.

Nezuko sighed as she got up, helping her brother up, hesitantly. As much as she wanted to keep Tanjirou down there so that he wouldn't hurt himself anymore, she knew she would end up killing him once the sun came out.

They were currently halfway up the mountain, and Nezuko could tell her brother was tired. The fact that the air was getting thinner did not help matters, as it seems demons needed oxygen too, or at least was sufficient for them to move and function. Still, neither of them panicked when oxygen levels were falling.

Nezuko wasn't sure, but she continued. But Tanjirou continued to suffer from the damages of the traps Urokodaki put down. The fact most of them had knives and other sharp objects meant to hurt her brother made her angrier.

Perhaps she should also be mad at Urokodaki, but she digressed. Hell, she could even be mad at their circumstances, not at Tanjirou directly. Nezuko noticed how Tanjirou was beginning to take the traps more seriously, knowing that Nezuko could take care of herself.

In the end, Tanjirou and Nezuko were making quite the progress compared to the second and first attempts.

At the end of the day, she wasn't even sure what to be mad about, or why she was doing this. All in all, she was just trying to follow her brother. She was unsure of her purpose, and to perhaps make sure she was remaining safe, she stuck with her brother.

And the reason was that they were family.

Nezuko could see how protective Tanjirou was of caring for her. How he talked to her was very brotherly-like, and it made Nezuko feel at home. A home…

What was her previous life like before she lost everything? She wanted to ask Tanjirou, but her voice was not there. She couldn't speak.

As she was questioning why they were doing this, Tanjirou continued to maneuver safely around the traps. While he was still getting hit by the trap, most were concentrated to his sides, rather than full of body injuries.

Nezuko couldn't understand, but whenever he thought about the reason why they were doing this, her mind went blank. She was trying to remember anything about what happened before, but no matter what, she felt as if it was being suppressed forcefully, or locked away just out of her reach.

Instead, what she did know was that she needed to commit to her actions and prove to her brother she was able to handle what he was doing.

She quickly made sure not to bleed, as her brother would worry about her well-being. Her brother was too careful, and seeing her brother be hurt so badly by that demon before being transformed, hurt Nezuko more than whatever she felt.

So, Nezuko decided not to worry about her brother, whatever he wanted to do, she would let him unless it got too unhealthy. For all they knew, both she and her brother wanted to do the same thing, and that was to prove to someone they were capable.

For Tanjirou, it may be towards Urokodaki, whereas for Nezuko, it was to Tanjirou. She was committed like her brother, but once again, with no real motive, Nezuko needed something to motivate her to commit as previously mentioned.

But then again, would that suffice? Tanjirou was the only family that she knew of. No matter what they did, she could only assume the others were gone. Gone. Just like that. She didn't know how much of her family was missing, but seeing as the two were trying to prove to an adult their worth, she only assumed both had nowhere else to go.

As the two continued to progress, she looked up and saw that it was still deep in the night. They both were making progress, clearly more and at a faster pace than the other attempts. And that was because both Tanjirou and Nezuko were able to move in a coordinated manner.

Using Tanjirou's advanced smell, and Nezuko's vision that enabled her to see longer in the dark,

Nezuko growled as she forced herself to hasten her own pace. Both she and Tanjirou, having experienced the traps multiple times previously, were also able to properly predict and think proactively about what to expect.

Thinking reactively was not always going to work when it came to demon slaying. They both had to think ahead and make sure they had everything planned. This was something the two of them learned quickly and ahead so that they would not repeat the same mistakes as last time.

Nezuko made a reminder that until they managed to successfully make it up the mountain, she would continue, and to make sure her brother would be properly healed and in proper health. She would make sure Tanjirou would sleep.

For a while, Nezuko was somewhat confused about why she was willing to go so far to care for Tanjirou.

But that was what made them siblings, she thought.

Regardless of the conflicting views both she and Tanjirou had on how to do things, despite Nezuko wanting to hate her brother sometimes, it was how they interacted.

They were siblings, and they should care for each other. However, she wanted to be more influential on Tanjirou's opinions on how he did things. She did not want her brother to purposely get himself hurt just to protect her.

Nezuko looked around, noting the ground and the specific triggers that would cause a trap to activate. She quickly grabbed Tanjirou tightly to prevent him from activating it.

Tanjirou's face of realization, that maybe Nezuko did notice the traps like him, made him feel a bit at ease. Perhaps he thought she was at a disadvantage for seeing the traps, but he too had to remember Nezuko had her abnormal sense.

Being extra sensitive to heat, to the point of being able to see infrared light, she was able to notice even some different anomalies within the forest as both she and Tanjirou began to make progress.

It has been around seven and a half hours since they finally made progress. The only thing that was stopping them from making it faster, was the thinning air, which made them must stop at some points. But even then, she realized that demons didn't necessarily need to breathe.

At the very least, they would probably lose consciousness temporarily, before they wake up. Without oxygen, they would merely remain unconscious until they regained oxygen again.

For now, Nezuko was content with the progress. She was happy that Tanjirou was outright avoiding the traps he could sense, as now he knew Nezuko could detect them just as fine.

Perhaps Tanjirou had a sense that Nezuko would end up hurting herself a bit, but when he noticed that Nezuko was not as clumsy or oblivious as he thought, he too became more comfortable with avoiding some of the traps.

Perhaps Tanjirou was focused on making sure Nezuko wasn't hurt, even at the expense of completing the training regimen. Regardless, she hoped that Tanjirou could worry about himself now.

That's not to say that they didn't get hit by any traps afterward.

Tanjirou would slip up occasionally and end up getting hurt. He had one where a bunch of rocks were thrown at him. Nezuko, whenever that happened remained still, as she was still unsure about wanting to get in the way to protect her brother.

But Tanjirou never complained. He just did the work.

Once they made it up the mountain, Tanjirou dropped down, taking in some deep breaths. Again, because of the thinning air, he didn't get as much air as he was hoping for.

Nezuko went to her brother in concern, patting his back, before he calmed down.

"Thanks, Nezuko…" Tanjirou said at last. After around five attempts, they finally had done it. Even when Urokodaki had tried his hardest to make the traps as difficult as possible, they had managed to complete it after the fifth time, within nine hours.

Nezuko smiled as she then heard the footsteps. When she looked up, she saw the heat distribution of Urokodaki as he walked toward the two.

Tanjirou too could tell due to his smell. He could smell the emotion coming from Urokodaki.

Both Nezuko and Tanjirou were somewhat confused as to why Urokodaki was feeling this way.

Urokodaki was giving a mix of surprise, and sadness.

Why was Urokodaki upset?

"Well, it seems you both made it back pretty quickly, despite making it more difficult to match both of your demonic presence… And while it took you three tries, you both were still remarkable, especially with how hard I made this course…" Urokodaki sighed. "Even if it took you quite the time, and you don't have any inherent skills, your determination is formidable."

Urokodaki then approached the two, "However, that won't be enough to help you thrive in this world." Tanjirou could only look down, as he was feeling useless once again.

"Very well, I accept both of you and will now begin your demon slayer training." With that, Urokodaki went back to his house, bringing out two wooden swords.

At this, Nezuko looked at the sword, with a bit of an oddity. For the most part, she felt that the wooden swords looked familiar.

She looked at Tanjirou, and even he looked a bit shocked as if he was remembering something as well.

"I have plenty of training swords for the both of you to use, however, you will only have three hours at most to start training. Therefore, we'll focus on allowing the two of you to grip the sword properly. If you both can show me some improvement and skill, then you will be able to learn further."

Both Nezuko and Tanjirou nodded, as they watched Urokodaki grip the sword in a resting manner. While it wasn't exciting, as many people associate sword training to be all about swinging, this was the final part of their training, she would assume.

That was, until something else.

"This looks familiar..." Nezuko mumbled. She turned her face to Tanjirou, who was having the same thoughts as her.

"Father, what are you doing?" A young Tanjirou asked if Nezuko eyed closely, wasn't Tanjirou? It was a younger version, with wilder hair.

A man who looked older than all of them, taller, but also somewhat frailer, looked at them.

"Starting today, you all will be taught how to swing a sword." The individual said. Considering what Tanjirou had said, with him being their father, Nezuko assumed that this man was her father as well.

"What? Why?" Nezuko looked in shock at what appeared to be a younger version of her brother.

"A-Are these my younger brothers? I had another one?" Nezuko asked herself in shock having seen this new child.

"There will be a time when you all are in trouble and will be needed to fight. As a result, you will pick up a sword, and become strong sword handlers." Her father once again told them, and immediately, Nezuko began to realize what this was.

"This is my memories of before…" Nezuko thought to herself. "And Urokodaki is giving us wooden swords… Are we about to do this?" Nezuko asked herself, as both she and Tanjirou eyed Urokodaki place the wooden swords down.

She looked at Tanjirou and noticed he was already doing well. It did make sense. Nezuko was amongst those who had experience when it came to swinging a sword accurately and precisely.

Whereas unbeknownst to Nezuko, Tanjirou had another way that made him remember it.

A darker memory, that he, unfortunately, did not have the best memories when it came to sword swinging.

Especially regarding his father, he remembered the hardships we went through during the whole ordeal. When it came to finding his affinity, all he could hope for was that Urokodaki was a better teacher than his father.

But when everyone except for Tanjirou was able to achieve their affinities, it made Tanjirou feel worthless.

And as Tanjirou began to remember how worthless and useless he was called during those times, one thing stood out as a beacon of a bright light… The only thing Tanjirou was confident in doing.

It was the very dance of the Hinokami Kagura, that made flames of the sun protrude out of Tanjirou's replica blades. It was purely visual. Something that those advanced in swordsmanship could see.

It was the only thing Tanjirou could think of, as he fondly remembered the dance.

Therefore, Urokodaki was mildly impressed with Tanjirou's quick progress. As such, he sent Tanjirou back to start learning a breathing style.

"So, he does have some inherent skills after all..." Urokodaki thought, "Very well..."

Nezuko was shocked that Tanjirou was able to learn that simple grip so quickly. As for Nezuko, she had held a sword before, but not to the extent as Tanjirou. She was only going off what Tanjirou had told her when he described how he danced and by her own experience and the stuff her father had taught her.

And so, she followed exactly what she was doing.

Urokodaki noticed the progress and stance Nezuko had, and even he too was surprised.

"That stance is a strong one… That is very impressive that these two know how to properly hold their blades and the stance, but to remember this after being turned to a demon, this is phenomenal…" Urokodaki mumbled to himself.

Of course, Urokodaki slapped the sword out of Nezuko's hand. Immediately, Nezuko flinched and closed her eyes in anticipation of what was next.

"You have the right form and grip, but we need to tweak it to make it proper," Was all he responded as he then picked the sword up, and gripped it in the way. Nezuko could tell he was giving a physical prompt, as the way he gripped the sword was rather unique. Urokodaki however, noticed the closed eye and tensed tone Nezuko was showing.

"Nezuko, watch me," Urokodaki told her, causing her to open her eyes.

Nezuko sighed in relief, as she gripped the sword in the way Urokodaki had shown her. She gripped it tight. Even if it was just, a wooden sword, she held it like it was a sword, as if she was willing to swing it down on the man responsible for killing her family.

It was like how Father had taught them, but it seemed more formal. More proper, almost as if Urokodaki had more experience, rather than looking over some simple readings.

This made sense since Urokodaki was visibly experienced in this. All the while Nezuko held herself tight. She wasn't sure why, but she felt like more physical pain was coming.

It seems Urokodaki noticed this. "Calm down." That was all he responded.

Nezuko snapped back to reality and looked at Urokodaki with shock.

"I can smell your emotions like Tanjirou, you know," Urokodaki explained, and Nezuko felt a bit embarrassed.

She nodded, as she held the sword again how he wanted her to. That was until she felt something hit her.

"Very good," Urokodaki remarked.

What. Nezuko was confused. Why did he do that, then praise her?

"You kept hold of the sword despite the surprise attack, perhaps you may learn the breathing styles quickly." Urokodaki praised Nezuko. "Continue to get the grip in your mind, as the sword will act as another limb to you. I'm going to check on your brother."

Little did he know that both she and Tanjirou were accustomed to sword swinging and breathing styles already. The only problem was that their parents knew nothing of it, and just told them to try until they saw some results. Tanjurou would sometimes buy books about sword styles and demon-slaying, but that was it.

All the while Nezuko was once again repeating the words in her head.

Breathing styles? Why did that sound so familiar?

She sighed and decided to just follow what Urokodaki was telling her to do. He was the teacher, and she was the student. Perhaps it would be best for Nezuko to just follow what Urokodaki wanted.

With that, Urokodaki went off to check on her brother. While she wasn't sure how her brother was progressing, she was sure that he was at the advantage now.

Considering he knew how to hold a sword better than her; he was probably beginning to properly swing the sword. However, his issues with learning breathing styles may be skewed, she wasn't sure.

Nezuko sighed before she noticed the sun was rising. She quickly ran back to the house, yawning. It was almost like she was nocturnal, having to sleep during the day and be awake during the night. Tanjirou was no different, and by the time she came back to their room, she saw Tanjirou already asleep.

Nezuko couldn't help but give a small smile. No doubt her brother suffer more, having taken some hits from the traps, and already having to swing a sword she assumed, she had it easier.

And it was all because of her brother.

She went down, gently rubbing her brother's face as he was sleeping so heavily. Light snoring was all that was audible for her as the remaining part of the house, wherever Urokodaki was, was a quiet individual.

"I'll make sure I will take my weight, starting now, brother." Nezuko thought to herself, as she was trying to say that to her brother.

Unfortunately, she still couldn't make any noise from her mouth. No growl, no noise, nothing.

It somewhat sucked that she suffered from this, but they had managed to function as a result.

Nezuko suddenly heard the door open and saw that Urokodaki was alongside another individual. This was the individual she recognized, as the one who had stabbed both her and her brother.

Almost immediately, she stood protectively over her brother, who was sleeping.

"What…" Once again, the individual seemed a bit shocked, as if to see them here.

"They passed the introduction, within nine hours," Urokodaki explained, and the slayer's eyes widened again.

"That was more than me and Makomo…"

Urokodaki sighed, "Yes, Giyu, only Sabito had done it faster than them…"

Giyu sighed alongside Urokodaki, and it was here Nezuko realized the two were pretty close in their personality.

"Very well, was there anything noteworthy you noticed about the two?"

Urokodaki looked conflicted, "The boy was able to hold a sword in the proper grip, while the girl needed a bit of work. But regardless, they were able to make some progress with gripping their swords properly. You did find some noteworthy demons, Giyu. I feel that they are somehow accustomed to demon-slaying, or at least in swinging swords properly."

Giyu, apparently the name of the demon slayer nodded. "Keep an eye on both of them. I would recognize letting the boy emphasize the breathing technique he had when he was fighting me. The girl may become a good candidate for water breathing."

"Water breathing?" Nezuko thought to herself in confusion. It sounded exactly what her father would talk to her about.

"You must be confused huh?" She looked up and she noticed Giyu was the one talking to her.

Nezuko shrugged. She couldn't talk, and so could only use her body muscles to showcase how she was feeling.

"Makes sense. Demon slayers use breathing styles to decapitate and fight demons. This means you will have to learn to breathe a certain way to utilize the true potential of demon slaying. It's not just about swinging a sword." Giyu explained.

This intrigued Nezuko.

So, was her father also a demon slayer secretly? That couldn't be the case, as her father seemed to have shown them some faulty teachings... But the fact that he made them all try this, made her wonder.

Why did he even teach them all this in the first place?

"I would explain that to your brother, but one, he's asleep, and two, he seems to understand the aspect of a breathing technique, it may be very soon until he begins to use a breathing style." Giyu added, "But you will need to put in more work and take more weight when training. Are you ready for that?"

"Yes!" Nezuko immediately said or tried to, before realizing she had to nod to get her point across. "So did Father and Mother try and train us to fight that demon? Did we fail?" Nezuko asked herself. Those were questions she would have to answer with time with her brother.

"Very well, I hope you are ready." That was all Giyu said. "Because both of you are demons, I will be coming back here to notify you and observe your progress."

Nezuko nodded in response.

"Nice to know, I will take the time to apologize now for stabbing both you and your brother. However, remember what is at stake in the event you do choose to go down that path." Giyu warned, before staring at Nezuko dead in the eye.

"For I will track both you and your brother, kill both of you and then kill myself," Giyu added, shocking Nezuko at how serious he was about it. Usually, Giyu was wearing a fox-like mask on his face, but for once, he was showing his face. Both Nezuko and Tanjirou could see the piercing blue eyes right on them.

"The same condition is here for means well," Urokodaki explained, further making Nezuko nervous. Both were putting their life on the line just for both her and her brother.

While Nezuko was confident she would never eat any humans, she also knew she had to make sure she held onto her humanity, for she would cause three deaths if she did something unforgivable.

With that, Nezuko sighed, nodding, before going to bed. She may not have done as much as Tanjirou, but she was still very tired. She needed to regenerate her energy, and sleeping was such a nice feeling now.

As she went to sleep, she heard the voices of Urokodaki and another man talking.

When she went near the door, she smiled after seeing her brother finally sleep. It was quite the time, a few days ago when she last remembered that her brother would sleep. To see him finally sleep after this hurdle, was satisfying for her. Especially since she usually slept before her brother, she was able to stay up for a bit more.

But she wanted to gain more information. She wanted to know what was going on. And so, she crept up near the door listening to Urokodaki and another man.

This man was a half-haori, and it was here did Nezuko recognize this person as the one who originally tried to kill her and her brother, before taking them here.

"Are you sure?" Urokodaki asked.

Giyu nodded, "Regardless of whether or not they pass your training regiment, even if you plan to make it harder than ever, they won't be eligible for going to the Final selection. No matter what I see, you cannot send them to the Final Selection"

Urokodaki responded, "I know, but we will need to find a way to properly integrate them into the demon slayer corps. If we are to send them into the crops, then perhaps it would make their situations a lot better."

"Are you sure there's nothing else you can see them doing?" Urokodaki asked.

"No," Giyu responded. "I don't. As much as I would hope they can live their lives, they are demons who run the risk of eating humans. But because they act so human-like, they cannot just live a demon lifestyle."

So that was what Nezuko was… A demon… That was what both she and her brother were now… Demons…

And they were being taught by a demon slayer…

By the very thing that was supposed to kill them…

No wonder that other guy tried to kill them… They both were demons now…

Nezuko gulped, a bit in fear, but if they were still alive, then perhaps they had a chance…

But even then, Nezuko somewhat had a hidden, fear that these demon slayers would end up killing her. She had to remain vigilant, not just to protect herself, but also her brother…

What was she to do? Was she supposed to trust these two demon slayers? The very thing that was supposed to kill both her and brother.

Nezuko was unsure what to do… Perhaps she should rely on her brother and trust them. Little did she know that Tanjirou was awake.

All she did was listen for now.

"I understand, very well, I'll train them as you want, but just know I can only do so much regarding them integrating into the demon lifestyle. Because they won't be going to Final Selection, they won't get their Nirchirin blades or crows." Urokodaki warned.

"I'll deal with it if they get through your training, that is, if they do," Giyu explained.

Urokodaki nodded, "Indeed, for I do plan on making it hard to the point they wish they ran away in solitude."

"What are you doing, Nezuko?" Tanjirou asked, and this caused Nezuko to jump.

Of course, because Tanjirou accidentally snuck up on Nezuko, she jumped, causing the two demon slayers to hear them and realize they were awake and listening.

"Oh, are they awake?" Giyu asked.

"Seems to be," Urokodaki mumbled in response. "You two can come out."

Tanjirou nodded, whilst Nezuko followed behind, looking very nervous, eyeing the nirchirin blades the two of them had.

Urokodaki seemed to have sensed this fear coming from Nezuko.

"What's gotten you afraid?" Urokodaki asked Nezuko.

She eyed the nirchirin blade in front of them, placed on Urokodaki and Giyu's side.

"Ah, I see." Urokodaki started, "Perhaps she and Tanjirou are a bit confused?"

The two demons nodded.

"Very well, since you two are so far very phenomenal demons, we'll explain everything." Urokodaki continued.

"Do you two know what demons are?" Giyu asked, clearly eyeing the two closely.

Tanjirou and Nezuko, both with their memories of what their father told them about them, nodded.

"Father used to say how they were a human's predator, and that they could be killed by some poisonous flowers, sunlight, and by decapitation with a blade infused with sunlight," Tanjirou explained.

Giyu and Urokodaki nodded, "Indeed. As you both probably know now, you both are demons. Albeit, even by demonic standards, you both are anomalies." Urokodaki revealed.

"Yes. You both can resist, or show no interest in human flesh. And according to Giyu, you." Urokodaki pointed to Tanjirou, "were able to hide your demonic features phenomenally well."

Tanjirou scratched his head, "I just acted like myself…"

"Indeed. Perhaps this was how you acted when you were a human." Giyu theorized. "But then again, despite our expertise in killing and slaying demons, we're not adept when it comes to the biological mechanisms for transformations…" Giyu added.

"Bio-what?" Tanjirou asked.

"We're not exactly sure what goes on to a human body when they are turned into demons. We do have one person who does, however…" Giyu pondered, before he shuddered, and shook his head, "Nope, never mind."

At this, Urokodaki turned an eye to Giyu, "Are you thinking about her?"

"No." Almost too quickly, Giyu responded, which made Tanjirou curious about who he was referring to.

"I mean, if you send them down to her, she could properly experiment and analyze what makes them different," Urokodaki explained.

Giyu sighed, "But then we run the risk of the other Hashira finding out."

"But wouldn't her elder sister be happy to meet these kinds of demons?" Urokodaki asked.

"Perhaps, but it may be too soon to assume stuff. I think for now, letting them continue onwards with demon slaying would let them rise the ranks and show their worth." Giyu explained. "Of course, they may have to do some things differently."

"Did you inform Master about them?" Urokodaki asked.

Giyu nodded, "He seems very shocked, but pleased with the developments. He hopes Tanjirou and Nezuko can continue impressing him."

At this, Tanjirou and Nezuko gave a slight sigh, as the stress of the master of the demon slayer corps being strict and brutal was suddenly gone.

"So, what is going to happen with the two of you?" Urokodaki asked.

Giyu sighed, "Okayata-sama has already thought of a plan with these two. However, he does approve of us training them to become demon slayers."

Tanjirou and Nezuko were shocked by the developments. Considering their lives were somewhat in limbo, this sense of announcement was at least giving them some sort of direction in their life.

And that was something they desperately needed.

Giyu then focused on the two demons. "With permission from Okayata-sama, he has given us acceptance in allowing the two of us to train you to become demon slayers. Of course, because the two of you are demons, you will be taught differently, and proven differently. You will be tested differently."

Tanjirou and Nezuko nodded.

"Even if we are to be taught differently, as long as we can prove our worth to the corps to not be slain upon sight, then we will gladly do such things." Tanjirou gave Giyu a determined look.

Once again, Tanjirou felt his father's words echoing into his mind, calling him weak, and useless. A man of no value.

Regardless, Tanjirou focused on the immediate goal they had in mind right now.

"So Urokodaki, how are the two doing?" Giyu asked.

"It took them three tries to complete my introduction test, but considering everything I had to do to match their current capabilities, it is rather above average in their performance for their capabilities," Urokodaki explained. "As for their basic sword training, they seem to already know how to swing their blades relatively efficiently."

This surprised Giyu. "Wait, were you two trained?"

Both Tanjirou and Nezuko shook their heads.

Tanjirou spoke, "Our father did have us swing a wooden sword, but that was it."

"And the breathing technique did you use back then?" Giyu asked.

"Huh? What breathing technique?" Tanjirou asked.

"When you were trying to defend your sister?" Giyu asked.

"It was a breathing I used from a dance," Tanjirou explained.

"Oh, a dance… I thought it was a breathing style." Giyu mumbled. "Oh well, if you two are progressing find in their training so far, then they have potential."

Urokodaki nodded, "Indeed, I can see these two becoming strong demon slayers. Even if they weren't demons."

"I agree." Giyu nodded. "Now, considering Okayata-sama's demands and conditions, I am to visit every once in a while, to observe the progress of the two of you."

"That's fine, Giyu." Tanjirou gave him a small nod. Giyu realized that Tanjirou was giving him a mere nod, rather than a smile. This was somewhat concerning to him, as this made Giyu wonder if there was something wrong with Tanjirou.

Perhaps he would have to ask Urokodaki later if he could smell something coming from Tanjirou.

"Regardless, I think the fact that these two have already shown some strong basic training from their swordsmanship, I think training them would be of our benefit," Urokodaki explained.

"But how can we make sure they don't eat humans?" Giyu asked.

Urokodaki thought, "The two seem to like sleeping a lot. Besides, it seems that both Tanjirou and Nezuko are both resisting and not allowing themselves to eat humans."

Giyu nodded, "Even if this is still risky, I saw something in these two that made me hesitate to slay them. They acted so different from any newly transformed demon."

Urokodaki sighed, "What exactly happened? I know you told me, but I'd like you to explain still."

Giyu looked onward, "Tanjirou tried to protect Nezuko from being hurt, and it wasn't until he told me about what happened did, I realize Tanjirou too was a demon. Then, when I knocked Tanjirou out, Nezuko protected her brother. Even then, Tanjirou was very human-like, and even if Nezuko was unable to speak, she seemed to have some human thoughts."

Urokodaki looked intrigued, "That is very interesting… So, they haven't eaten any humans, ever… From their transformation… That does make sense considering the first thing the two did, was to sleep."

Giyu sighed, "Perhaps I could find more information about the entirety of demons, and how exactly they function."

Urokodaki nodded, "I agree. You would need to investigate. In the meantime, I'll continue to train them. If I find anything interesting about them, I will inform you."

"Thank you, sensei." Giyu nodded.

In the end, the conversation seemed to have gone successfully. Both Urokodaki and Giyu were able to perform a lot of progress when understanding both Tanjirou and Nezuko.

And despite Urokodaki's recommendation to see an expert in demon anatomy and medicine-related thing, Giyu vehemently denied the motion.

However, something was bothering Giyu, and that was the weird sensation he was getting from Tanjirou. It was a sensation of something different from other demons.

Tanjirou didn't radiate like many demons. Nezuko radiated more like a typical demon, but even she was an oddity. Tanjirou was a different story…

"Um, Urokodaki, can you smell something from Tanjirou?"

Urokodaki nodded, "Oh right, I think this development from Tanjirou should be mentioned. But it seems that Tanjirou is a demon consumer."

Giyu looked very shocked at this.

A.N / So Chapter 7 is more Nezuko-centric, as I wanted to give the readers a sense of what Nezuko is going through. Unlike Tanjirou, who specifically lost his memories specific to Muzan, Nezuko seems to have forgotten almost everything. Nezuko is regaining her memories with time, with the proper triggers.

Also, one thing I want to mention is the idea that Tanjirou lost some of his memories after defeating and eating his demonic counterpart. Once again, this will be explained with the introduction of Tamayo, but I will hint that if Muzan didn't force demons to forget what he probably did to them before converting them into demons, would the demons follow him? There is a reason why I made Tanjirou forget about Muzan, especially in tangent with his conflicting thoughts with his father.

Finally, the training arc will continue, specifically regarding another little plot that Tanjirou will struggle with. This will give a nice leeway into particularly the fight scenes. We won't see a lot besides a few causal ones. That's why I included some fighting scenes, such as the first fight against Muzan, and Tanjirou against his demonic counterpart. I do understand some questions are unanswered, but I do like to keep questions in the story only to be answered later.

One more thing to mention is the specific conflicts Tanjirou will have, alongside Giyu and Urokodaki being more involved in this arc. I do want to involve Giyu more and have stronger character development for him. We'll start to see his backstory next chapter, which will probably be a bit different than the canon.
