Miguel's parents Javier and Blanca are running through the jungle as jungle inhabitants chase after them. The pursuers try throwing spears at them, but they are thrown at a tree. Miguel's parents stop at a ledge where there is a waterfall below. Miguel's father, Javier Carlos, points to a tree branch so he manages to use his whip and get it to grab onto it. Miguel's mother, Blanca, hangs onto her husband while they try to swing to the other side of the ledge, but the branch snaps, leaving J.C. and Blanca to fall into the water. The natives look on and leave. After they do, Javier comes back up to the surface grabs Blanca's hand, and gets up. now they run to the other side of the jungle. They see the plane. Alligators showed up and surround them. Blanca and Javier nod to each other; they grab onto the vines, swing above the gators and manage to get into the biplane's seats.
Javier says to Blanca, "Still got the serum?"
Blanca holding a bag, "Right here."
Angie starts the plane and they take off into the air.
General Posadas (Grandpapi) narrates, "And that's how your parents got the orchid serum out of the forbidden jungle and brought it back to save the village from the sleeping sickness, Hijos"
In Miguel's room, General Grandpapí was telling the story to the kids who decided to have a slumber party.
Miguel: "When they get out of the jungle just in time? That's my favorite part."
Layla: "Then what happened, Grandpapí?"
General Grandpapí: "Oop, no, no, no, I'll tell you tomorrow, same time, same place," he tucks them in and walks to the door.
Miguel: "Aww. Just one more story?"
Grandpapí: "No. Always leave 'em asking for more, Short Man. Good night." he turns the lights off and closes the door.
(They all go to sleep)
It's been a while since Angie and Mateo's baby was born. Things have been a bit hectic at home. With Jacob crying, the visiting relatives scrambled to help. Which is thoughtful till someone enters without knocking. Someone saw boob which was followed by an awkward explanation.
Morning: Mr. Iglesias' (aka Chico) classroom
Chico: "Kids, I'm passing out another flier to remind you about the Parents' Tournament Weekend."
All the students agree except for Luna who is uneasy.
"Parents' Tournament Weekend will be a heartfelt celebration of those special people: Tu Madres y padres, who take the responsibility to raise, teach, and protect you," Chico reads the flyer, "They need to shorten this," making the students chuckle.
"Cut to the chase, Señor Iglesias. What are the prizes?"
Chico gives her a look, "As I was saying before I was interrupted. This year the other grades will be joining. The team with the highest score will win this trophy." shows a trophy "And the second and third-place winners will get these ribbons." shows a ribbon.
Chavo turns to Luna, "Are you coming, too, Lulu? I mean, by bringing your grandma and grandpa as parents? Since you don't have no-" gets poked hard by Gerald, "Ow!"
"Shh! Chavo!" gestures to Luna.
"So tell your parents. You need a good night's sleep, boys and girls. The festivities start first thing tomorrow morning." Chico finished.
The bell rings and everyone heads out but Luna is still worried.
The Sidewalk
After Chico dropped off Luna and Gerald in their Neighborhood he went running errands leaving the two kids to walk the rest of the way home.
Gerald: "Man, I can't wait for the Parents' Tournament. It's gonna be a blast; sack races, egg tosses, that gladiator triathlon thing."
Luna walks up to the Boarding House door, "Yeah, I don't think I wanna go, though."
Gerald was surprised, "Huh? Why not?"
"Everyone's gonna be there with their parents. And my parents are..."
"What, are you crazy? Your mom is a karate master. Your dad can bench-press 210 pounds. They're the coolest parents and Grandparents I know. You guys will kick butt, Luna."
"All the same. I hope Mami and Papi forgot about the Parents' Tournament."
The Sunset Arms' Living Room.
Maria exercises while wearing a karate gi "90, 91, 92,..." It is revealed that Maria is on Manolo's back who is doing push-ups while she is meditating.
Kitchen
"What are they doing?" Asked Alma about the Sánchez patriarchs while helping prepare dinner in the kitchen.
"They're getting ready for the parents' day tournament," Julieta answered while cooking.
Pepa mashed potatoes, "What's that?"
"It's a big school picnic where the students and their parents compete in games," answered Angelina cutting vegetables with her son on her back.
Alma: "I see. How... interesting. Are all the children competing?"
Zita: "If they want. The other grades are joining but they'll most likely go to the booths."
Alma: "They are safe? Right?"
Julieta: "Don't worry mamá They have first aid tents for any injuries."
Acacia: "And the children will be fine."
Living room
Manolo: "100! Okay, Maria, you can get off me now." He sees Luna come in, "Hey, Lulu! Can't wait to take on the young blood at Parents' Tournament weekend tomorrow. Right, mí amor?"
Maria bows, "Hai!"
Luna leaves the room and sees Miguel sitting alone thinking.
Luna's Room the kids are having another sleepover.
Luna is in bed, looking at a picture of her family including Miguel's parents in her hands. Knocks are heard at her door. She places the picture in a drawer and lies down.
Miguel: "Come in."
Grandpapí comes in as he walks to the bed. Grandpapí: "So, where'd we leave off? Oh, that's right, your mom and dad made it out of the jungle alive"
(Layla) Lala sensing her cousins' distress, "Grandpapí, can we skip the story tonight?"
Grandpapí gasps, "What? Are you sick or something?" He places his hand on their heads, "You're sure you don't want a story?"
Luna: "Yeah. We're sure. We just want to go to sleep."
Grandpapí: (realizes) "Oh! I get it! Pretty nervous about the competition, huh? Well, don't worry, Kids. We'll strike fear and terror in the hearts of your little classmates!" (laughs while Luna shuts her eyes)
Park
Mirabel and her family are setting up their tables with food. Even Zano is helping them. Angie is feeding baby Jacob (Jac-Jac) Acacia and Ignácio are helping set up a tent for shade. While Alma and the little ones listen to Bruno and Camilo's rat stories. All members are wearing a t-shirt that says go (family last name) each one in their color.
Green for Bruno. Yellow for Pepa. Blue for Julieta. Red for Sánchez...
Mirabel couldn't help but look around in wonder. "So many people," she said and faces Zano "Are all those kids Chico's students?"
"Nah. I think only twelve of those kids are. The rest are from other grades," Zano answered while setting up the chairs.
"Wow in our school there is only one teacher per grade," said Luisa.
"Really?" Zano asked curious at the mention of their school, "Hey does your town still have the one school?"
"We have two schoolhouses in different locations," said Isabella who just got back from exploring the park "Really helped with overcrowding."
"Sensible," Zano said getting back to his task.
Dolores: "By the way, Zano your sisters said that you used to compete in these tournaments."
"Yeah, I did. Chico used to be my teacher back then as well."
"What did you do in them?" asked Luisa.
"The basics. Mostly run, jump, and catch the egg," he listed.
"Don't you mean ball?" asked Dolores confused by the last part.
"No, I mean egg," he states then sees their confused expressions. "For the egg toss. You don't have that game in Encanto?"
"We heard of it," said Isa. "We just don't play it. Too messy even by my standards. I don't mind getting messy when dying or painting to express myself but egg yok just feels weird." Thought Isabella.
"And wasteful" added Luisa. "Eggs are for eating."
"That's why my mother brings the pets here. After the toss, they eat the eggs on the grass."
"I'm sure Tonito would appreciate that."
"My mom also brings the kids with her sometimes. He can join her if he wants." the white-haired teen suggested.
"He has been spending a lot of time with the other kids I barely see him," said Mirabel. Happy for her primo but sad for not spending time with him.
"Don't worry you're still his favorite it's just that he hasn't been with family his age before like we have," said Dolores assuring her prima. "And there is a lot for them to catch up on."
"That's a little weird," said Zano cutting into the conversation. "Didn't your dads have any siblings? Or any with kids? There had to be someone close to his age," he inquired.
"Well yeah they do," said Mirabel recalling her dad's side "Though they didn't live with us and some moved out of the Encanto."
"Same," Dolores said, indicating a similar situation "They can't visit as much, even when we had time, and their youngest is 12 by now."
"I guess after traveling through those mountains who could blame them," Zano was intrigued. "Still kind of lonely for your dads."
"Hey, Zano!" Said a familiar voice that caught Zano's attention. He turns and sees his friend running up to him.
"Ernie?" Ernie stops next to him to catch his breath, "What are you doing here?"
"My parents sent me on an errand. Oh, and this," he pinched Zano's arm. "What the hell man?!" Ernie muttered "You've been ghosting me since you got back home. What gives?" Then he notices the Madrigals "Hi."
"Well, dear. I've been busy with work and the kids," Zano stated mockingly then get serious. "I'm grounded remember my phone rights are cut off and La Reina (points to Acacia) has everyone on schedule for the new baby," Ernie gasps.
"Angie's baby finally came! And you didn't tell me!" He exclaimed in disbelief and hurt.
"Grounded. Plus it was a family matter and our moms already talked about it."
"She doesn't tell me anything unless it's about our family and you know that!"
"Ernie now is not the time my parents will be here soon," Zano said getting annoyed at his friend's dramatics.
"Fine," he relented "Who are they?" He points to the Madrigals.
"Ernie these are Angie, Javier, and Ignacio's cousins," Zano stated as he introduced them.
"Hola, I'm Mirabel Madrigal," she shakes his hand "These are my sisters Isabella and Luisa." she gestured to her siblings. "And our prima Dolores."
"Hi, I'm Ernesto. I like long walks, movies, and dives. I'm also this ingrates doormat," he points to Zano who's getting irritated. "Enough." he scolded before adding. "He's my best friend."
"You have a best friend?" Isa said, surprised cause the moody lone wolf didn't seem to be the type that has best friends.
"You do?" he retorted earning a glare from the older girl. "I've known Ernie since we were in diapers, so the title was up for grabs," said Zano. "Plus, he cries if I don't refer to him as that."
"And you still pick talking to girls over me," Ernie added.
"They're relatives Ernie," explained Zano. Granted not by my blood but still related.
"Only from your brother-in-law's side," he said making the girls smirk at Zano's growing frustration.
"Dude, go home your errand is leaking" he grunts pointing to the bag in Ernie's hands hopefully it will get him to leave.
"Oh, man!" He whines at the leaking and relents. "Fine, I'm leaving but I'm going to call your house phone later," Ernie leaves while waving. Now Zano is alone with the girls again who are smiling. "Not a word," he warns. Then a loud horn interrupts them before they can question and tease him.
A Packard arrives at the parking lot, and Manolo gets out wearing a tracksuit and a beanie. Maria gets out and reveals herself wearing a cheerleading outfit in pants and pom-poms. Maria chants, "Luna, Luna she's our man. If she can't do it, no one can."
Manolo chants with her, "Who's the best, east to west?"
Maria gets out in a cartwheel while chanting, "Who's got zest, beat the rest?"
Manolo and Maria chanting, "Luna, Luna, sis-boom-bah! Go, Luna!"
Suddenly, a hummer arrives with Helga and her parents. They get out and see Luna's family.
Helga: (jokingly) "Quite a lineup you got there, Lulu."
Helga's Dad scoffs, "We gotta beat these characters? Oh-ho, the trophy's practically ours."
Grandpapí shows his rear end and points to it, "See this? You're gonna be lookin' at it crossin' the finish line, Pataki." He makes teasing noises.
The kids laugh at his antics as the adults cover their young relative's eyes.
"Papa put that away your not competing this year," Maria said reminding her father it's not his turn.
"You kids excited for your first parents' day tournament?" Acacia asked, All the kids nodded 'yea' except one. Cia noticed and asked. "Miguel, are you okay honey?" She put her hand on his shoulder. "I'm fine," he answered not wanting to be a bother.
All of the parents and their children are gathered in the tournament as Chico announces on stage, "Buenos Díaz! P.S. 118's students and parents! Welcome to our annual Parents' Tournament Weekend. Eugene?" Eugene makes his way to the stage wearing a toga and carrying a fake torch as a torchbearer. He trips on his way to the stage while he screams and the fake torch lands in Chico's hand.
Eugene dazed, "Ow. I'm okay."
Chico calls, "Medic!" back to everyone, "At the end of this weekend, one lucky family will take home this trophy!" Holds it up.
Big Bob calls by his palm, "Whoever wins the trophy is the best parent!" The crowd cheers.
"No, that's not what I said. This isn't that kind of competition. The trophy is more of a symbol. A souvenir, really."
Bob: "Yeesh! What a tea cozy. (turns around to the crowd) I doubt there's a handful of guts in this whole stinking crowd." (to Eugene's father) "What are you lookin' at?" (to Helga with his readied fist) "Ready, Helga?"
Helga: (does a fist bump) "Let's kick some butt."
Ignácio to his wife, "That's Helga's father? Man what a grouch," she nodded in agreement.
Chico proclaims, "Let the games begin!"
First event sack race! At the sound of a whistle, all the teams take off hopping. Big Bob and Helga make it to the finish line and Chico puts Helga's family on the top of the scoreboard. Next, Gerald, Rhonda, and Phoebe are up for the pie toss. They laugh at the parents' heads being on cutouts, so the three throw the pies at each of their parents. Next comes the ring toss. Big Bob throws a blue ring at the mark but misses, so Manolo grabs a yellow ring, turns around, and tosses it right into the target without looking, which makes the crowd cheer, the Patakis facepalm, and The Madrigals/Mondragón/Sánchez/Iglesias' clan clap. Fade into the crowd standing in front and Chico is back on the stage.
"Okay, right now, Gerald's team is in third place, Phoebe and Luna's teams are tied for second, and the team to beat is Helga's."
"You must be tired, Papi. Are you sure you don't wanna sit this one out?" Luna asked him hoping to end this. "Are you kiddin'? I'm just gettin' my second wind," Manolo proclaimed.
Chico: "Okay, we've come to the final competition of the day: The Egg-Toss Relay Race. Teammates, you must keep tossing your eggs back and forth to each other until we're down to two contestants."
Manolo to Luna and Maria, "Okay, come on, you two, we got to strategize."
Fade into the egg toss. The children toss each of their eggs to their parents back and forth. Some of the eggs land safely on each others' hands but miss each time onto some of the parents and the children.
Chico delighted with an announcer's voice, "Isn't this fun? Three teams remain, Phoebe, Helga, and Luna!"
Luna sees the egg being tossed in the air and is about to catch it, and luckily, she uses her cap to catch the egg safely inside it. The crowd cheers for Luna in victory.
Helga quietly, to herself, "Sweet catch." Then meanly, to Luna, "Ha! Nice job, little Lulu! You couldn't catch a cold! You loser you couldn't-"
"Hey, heads up!"
Helga who was distracted, "Huh?" The egg lands on her face and cracks, which makes the onlookers laugh at her epic fail.
Big Bob angrily, "For crying out loud, Helga, what's the matter with you?! Keep your eye on the egg, not your opponent! We are not gonna let some orphan and their ancestors win this Parents' Weekend thing. Do you understand?"
Luna and her family. And the Madrigals heard what he just said.
Helga distraught, "Dad!"
"What?" Not aware of what he said.
Luna was distracted by the insult "Heads up, Mija!" the egg lands and cracked on the ground. But she didn't even bother "Atta girl." Manolo said not to discourage his distracted daughter.
Phoebe catches the egg with her hands perfectly which made the crowd cheer and her parents so proud that Phoebe won.
"Phoebe wins!" Chico announced then slips out of sight to check on Luna.
"Luna, you look like you've been poleaxed. What happened out there?"
Luna sarcastically, "Nothing, Chico. I-" sighs and admits, "I just got... turned around, that's all," she walks off leaving a worried Chico with the family who looks livid at a certain salesman.
"That trophy better not slip out of my fingers, Helga. Did you get that? Victory will be mine." He walks away.
Helga talks to herself, "Huh. Victory. At what price," runs to Luna outside the entrance, "Hey, Lulu, wait up."
Luna annoyed, "What, Helga?"
"I-I just wanted to say that... I mean, I like an insult as much as the next guy, but back there when my dad said that thing about being an orphan..."
"Yeah. I remember."
Helga: "Well, I guess maybe he went too far."
Luna: "I gotta get going."
Helga: (not helping) "I mean, you know you have parents they're just old. You don't need my dad pointing it out to you. It's tough enough being all alone in the world, but-"
Luna: (having heard enough) "Thanks, Helga." (walks away)
Helga: (reasonably and sympathetically) "So, are we okay?"
Luna: (sarcastically) "Sure."
Helga: (meanly) "Good, 'cause tomorrow, I'm gonna kick your butt!" (walks back to the entrance while dusting off her hands and talking to herself) "I think that went very well"
~The Sunset Arms' Dining Room~
Maria sings with a Western accent while wearing a cowboy hat and a necktie, as she serves dinner. "Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam Where the deer and the antelope play..." (to Miguel) "More kidney beans, Tex?" (notices his expression) "Why you ain't even touched your first helping."
Miguel: (not feeling it) "I guess I ate a lot at the festival..."
Grandpapí: "Ooh! No harm in that. Festival food is good for you. Especially that pink, fluffy junk on a stick." (to Luna) "Take some more of them beans. Gonna need plenty of fuel to wipe out the floor with that Pataki character tomorrow."
Luna: "Um... Grandpa, about the tournament... I-I'd prefer not to go back tomorrow. Think we could do something else?"
Everyone was surprised, along with her parents. But Grandpapí saw all the kids sharing the same expressions even Antonio. "Uh-oh. I sense another one of your oh-so-painfully illuminating childhood problems. Fess up, kids."
Luna: (explains to everyone with sympathy) "It's just that Parents' Tournament Weekend is for kids and their parents, and I'm lucky to have you guys." She said making her parents smile. "And I'm so glad to have such a big family but... some of us feel unsure if we belong there," (She looks to Miguel who's looking down)
Acacia: (getting the point her sister is making) She quietly gasps, "Oh, honey," (and hugs him in comfort)
Miguel: (hugs back) "I think I'm too full for dessert." (gets up and leaves) "Night."
Maria: "I made a raspberry cobbler." she said trying to make him stay.
Miguel: "No thanks"
The kids leave and head upstairs with him to bed.
"Night," everyone said as all the kids went to sleep.
Manolo: "Night," (turns to his wife) "Well, now what?"
Maria says to her daughters and in-laws, "All of you better go talk to him."
Chico sighs, "I don't know. Somehow, I don't think another bedtime story about his parents can fix this."
"He needs you," Maria puts her hand on his shoulder, "All of you." She turns to the three couples, "You better go talk to him anyway."
Angie sighs and does the right decision, "She's right. Miguel needs us."
"I still can't believe that awful man," Alma said, upset with Bob's words, "He had no right."
"Don't worry I accidentally scratched his car with my keys" Acacia said, proud of her payback.
"How does that help?"
"When it comes to men like him, his car is his baby," Ignácio explained as he got up. "C'mon guys" and they all went to talk to Miguel.
