Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)
Disclaimer: I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does. Though, of course, the OC is mine.
The next day, upon entering the school grounds, Nanami was immediately greeted with a crowd of students. It was hardly a surprising scene, especially with the return of the junior and senior students, the school was expected to become livelier than it was yesterday.
"An extreme morning to you, Senritsu!" A voice that easily stood out among the others called out to Nanami. She searched and found Sasagawa Ryohei standing in front of the bulletin board, waving a bandaged hand at her.
She walked up to him with a smile. "Morning! What class are you in, Sasagawa?"
"2-E! You?" he answered, but immediately gawked in realization. "Oh, wait—"
"I see. So we're in different classes, huh? I'm in Section C," she mumbled disappointedly, unaware that she had cut him off in the middle of his statement. She then glanced at him and was surprised at his dumbfounded reaction. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah! I'm just wondering how you already knew your section when you just arrived," he explained, staring off into space as he scratched his chin in thought. "A psychic? Or, maybe, a fortune-teller?
Nanami let out a chuckle. Her boxing friend never failed to amuse her.
Clearing her throat, she regained his attention before timidly pointing at the red armband that was pinned on her left sleeve. Ryohei gasped upon understanding her message.
"Oh, council privilege, huh! That's amazing to the extreme!"
After their small chat, Ryohei continued to his assigned class while Nanami excused herself to attend to her council duties.
"What a busy morning," she muttered on her way to the auditorium. As the student council president, she always had obligations to attend to, making her schedule a bit more packed compared to the others.
Sliding the large door that barricaded the hall, she announced her arrival to the already present members. They greeted her back, "Good morning, president!"
"Good work," she gave them a smile as she examined the surroundings. "You've done well. Is everything finalized?"
"Yes, we're just arranging the seats." The logistics chairman approached Nanami and accompanied her around while explaining the progress of their work. She simply nodded, completely satisfied with the results.
Pulling a stack of chairs that resided in a corner, the brunette strode towards the back of the auditorium and started lining up the seats. In the middle of her chore, she heard a squeal. She quickly glanced over her shoulder and saw a group of unfamiliar girls.
Are they the volunteers? It's very kind of them to help. She smiled, feeling grateful.
"Waah~! The freshman I was assigned to yesterday is super hot! His name is..." One of the girls spoke dreamily.
Ah, so that was it. Nanami sighed but nodded in understanding.
It was spring, after all. Without fail, at every start of a new academic year, both male and female students from the higher years hunt for freshmen in search of a new romantic interest.
"Hi, prez!" She was taken out of her reverie upon being called. The same girl waved a hand at her. "You were also here yesterday, right? Was there anyone who piqued your interest?"
She paused in thought. Actually, yes, but there are two of them.
"Hm, that is—"
"Hey, cut it out! Our president isn't into things like that. Be more respectful." Another student scolded in a harsh whisper.
The girl laughed sheepishly and scratched the back of her head. She gave the president an apologetic look. "Sorry, Senritsu-san! Just forget what I said."
"It's alright." Nanami smiled, but a drop of sweat discreetly made its way down her forehead.
️Do I really give off that kind of vibe?
A certain brunette pondered in dilemma. Despite the loud voice of the teacher echoing throughout the four corners of their classroom, she could not help but be distracted.
The culprit? It was none other than that statement from earlier.
It surely did not seem like an insult. If anything, the way they respected her strength and independence touched the depths of her heart. However, as disappointing as it may be, the real Senritsu Nanami was just like any other girl. She was a hopeless romantic. Reading shoujo manga and cheesy romance novels were her hobbies.
Unfortunately, all of those could only be done in secret. Why? Because it was badly-matched with her strong and virtuous image—a mask she deemed necessary to govern over the student body of Namimori High.
Still, should that be a hindrance to her finding true love?
Unconsciously crumpling the paper on her desk, Nanami let out an aura of plight that sent chills down the spines of her classmates. They watched in horror, unaware of the inner battle that ensued between her heart and mind.
️In the afternoon, a Welcome Ceremony was held for the entire student body.
Seated in the front row along with the other council officers, Nanami remained silent as she listened to the principal address his speech. After a few more minutes, he glanced at her, signaling that it was almost her turn.
"Now, let us welcome our esteemed Student Council President," announced the principal as she ascended to the stage, "Senritsu Nanami-san."
A surprised gawk was heard from the right side of the auditorium. Though it was not loud enough to echo throughout the hall, a certain silverhead still managed to earn a few curious looks.
"That woman!" He shakily pointed at the girl speaking behind the podium. "She's the president?!"
Miura Haru, who was assigned to another class, but ended up having her seat beside the boisterous bomber because of the vertical arrangement of chairs per section, gave Gokudera a querying glance. "Is she an acquaintance of yours?"
"We met her yesterday," explained Tsuna, who sat in front of his right-hand man. "Senpai helped us when we arrived late."
Gokudera grumbled, "No, Tenth. She's a disrespectful wench!"
Haru immediately slapped the back of his head. "Calling a girl a wench makes you the disrespectful one, Gokudera-san!"
"Haru," Tsuna turned to face her with a noticeable guilty expression. He had been wanting to ask her something. "Is it really alright for you to be in this school?"
The girl was from a rich and sophisticated family, after all. He was afraid that her attending a public school might have angered her parents.
She gave him a big smile. "Don't worry, Tsuna-san. With Reborn-chan's help, Haru was able to persuade her parents!"
The male brunette grimaced at the mention of his mentor. What the hell did he do?!
"With this, we'll be able to spend more quality time together!" She tried to cling to his arm but was stopped with a hand to her face. She glared at Gokudera, who harshly reminded her not to casually touch his beloved Tenth.
Upon finishing the introduction of the other council officers, Nanami proceeded to discuss the school's rules and regulations.
A certain detail caught Gokudera off guard again. "She's the head disciplinary officer too?!"
"Hai, hai. Can you stop overreacting every single time, Gokudera-san?" commented Haru offhandedly. He was about to snarl at her when Tsuna spoke again.
"Speaking of discipline, where is Hibari-san?"
"He's in another section with Yamamoto and Sasagawa Kyoko," he answered with a scowl, the mere thought of the Cloud guardian was enough to make his mood drop. "Ah, but I doubt that the bastard is here. He hates crowds."
Tsuna nodded in agreement.
"One more thing."
An intimidating voice suddenly echoed through the speakers averting their attention. Gokudera glanced at Nanami and, to his surprise, met her eyes that obviously hid mischievous intentions.
"Flashy hair dyes are not allowed. For example, silver."
Concealing a smug grin really put up a challenge, especially when her tease made someone's face turn dark red due to excessive embarrassment or, more likely, anger. "This is Japan, not some western country. The only allowed colors are black, brown, and auburn. Of course, unless it is inborn."
"This is my natural hair color, you crazy wom—"
Haru kicked his chair which made Gokudera accidentally bite his tongue.
Nanami had to fight an indignant snort as she continued her announcement. "School-wide inspection will be held by the end of the week. Students who resist shall be subjected to a heart-to-heart interview."
Tsuna noticed a number of students pale at her words. Never had he been thankful that his hair was of a normal color.
️After the program, the president went straight to the office.
"No one's here yet, huh?" she muttered while scanning the empty council room.
Nanami strode to her desk and plopped down the chair. Tired, she breathed out a heavy sigh before closing her eyes to take a short rest.
The two officers who always had to give an address during welcome ceremonies were the president and head disciplinary officer—and, unfortunately, she was both.
The words of the previous president flashed in her mind, and she was reminded of the reason she was given arguably the two most important positions in the council: to grant her absolute authority over Namimori High. According to him, it would come helpful when a group of troublesome students starts attending their school.
She frowned, her eyes slowly opened. The only troublesome one she encountered so far was Gokudera Hayato, and he barely posed a problem as he was such an easy boy to bait.
Readjusting her posture to a sitting position, Nanami reached for the drawers and pulled out a shoujo manga. She read the title, "The President is A Maid", and let out a giggle before proceeding to open the book.
"Good afternoon," a greeting from the door took her out of her daze. In a span of a second, the brunette had her manga closed and hidden in the drawer. The new entrant only smiled at her actions, aware of her attempt to hide her hobbies. "—president."
"H-Hello, Ogata!" Nanami waved a hand at her vice president. She was too busy panicking that she failed to notice the other guest.
"That armband."
A menacing voice called out from the same door. She turned to the unknown man and met his sharp blue-grey eyes. His lips were quirked in an evil smirk.
"You're the strongest here, am I right?"
Unbeknownst to Nanami, here came her greatest trouble.
Author's Note:
Nanami was reading Kaichou wa Maid-sama! It is a manga with an anime adaptation so make sure to give it a try if you haven't watched it yet!
