~Sunset Arms boarding house~
General Posada returns to the living room from the bathroom. "Woo! I feel like a new man! Light as a feather. Anyway, back to the journal."
"Finally!"
~San Lorenzo~
"We parachuted into the heart of the jungle, the volcanic mountains of San Lorenzo. Where we had last seen any sign of the mysterious Green Eyes."
As the group, sans a winged Angie, Acacia, and Zita, parachute into the jungle. Javier got stuck in tree branches.
Blanca: "You okay?" she asked her husband.
J.C.: "Never better." he insists as he falls from the tree.
The group arrived at a Green-Eyed shrine where they previously returned, the sacred La Corazón, which is currently surrounded by dead butterflies.
Blanca picked up a butterfly, "Look! Mariposas Muertas." she holds one to examine closer, "They're always the first ones to die. It's the sleeping sickness."
"And now it's hit the Green Eyes," Javier concluded.
"We've got to make a serum. Fast!" Chico said. Blanca looks at a book, "We'll need some red moss from the San Juan River, the nose whisker of a wild Bolivian boar, and the root of a Panamanian Zapote tree," Blanca listed.
"Right. Sounds easy!" Javier optimistically said.
"Okay, so one group will find the ingredients. Another here to help lessen the effects of the sickness, and the rest of us will be working on a temporary cure till the ingredients arrive," Mateo stated.
"What do you mean by that?" Asked Javier.
"Look Javi, the infected could be dying before the serum is made, we need to buy them time, till it's done," said Ignacio.
"Right, so Javier, Blanca, and Zita will work on a medicine to nullify the effects, Chico, Ignacio, and Mateo will get the ingredients. While Acacia, Eduardo, and I help take care of the sick." Confirmed Angelina.
"I don't think that necessary!" Questioned Ignacio not comfortable with leaving his wife alone where she could get sick.
"Don't worry we will wear masks and gloves hopefully there's a cure by then," Acacia assures him as they kiss.
~San Juan River ~
The group of Chico, Ignácio, and Mateó, search the waters looking for the moss but have had no luck.
(sighs) "Okay, I give up. We've looked under every rock in this entire river, and found no red moss," a tired Chico said sitting on a rock.
"Umm... we haven't looked under every rock." He points to a rock above the river which made the exhausted Chico sigh, "Oh man," Making Ignácio smile.
~Bolivia~
The group spots the wild boar sleeping. "There he is," Chico said, and as he was about to get the whisker Ignacio stops him and goes to get it instead.
He approaches the boar, hiding behind the bushes.
Mateo watches nervously "Careful..." he whispers urgently
Ignacio gets the whisker, only to get caught in a spider web making him scream which wakes up the boar.
"I hate spiders, I hate spiders, I hate spiders! Aaah!" The spider-ridden Madrigal cried as the boar cased him.
~Panama~
"Okay, I admit the first two were hard, but this one will be easy!" Mateo said as each man grabbed a shovel and started digging for the root.
After a while, Mateo unknowingly steps on quicksand only to realize something was wrong as he was getting shorter.
(sinking) "Umm... uh-oh. Guys! Guys!" He panicked and the others saw him sink before they could teach him.
Chico ties a vine around his torso and dives into the quicksand to save Mateo with Ignacio pulling the vine to get them out.
Mateo panting, "As I said, that was easy," He shows them the root.
~San Lorenzo~
The three men sleep on the plane while Eduardo flies it.
After the guys returned early with the ingredients, we immediately made the serum in our hut, while Eduardo hunts butterflies. It was tedious and took so much time. The serum at first failed, but we didn't give up we kept mixing and testing. After a while, our efforts paid off and we had our cure.
"Got it!" Blanca announced. the group sheered in joy.
They arrive at the site to deliver the serum for the green eyes to take. "I hope we're not too late," Javier said, they leave the cure on the nest. As the group turns around a familiar wind blows, when they look behind them, the medicine was gone which meant they took it.
The couple slept in their huts and the next morning Blanca awakes and sees gifts from the Green Eyes. "Javier!" she wakes him up and he sees the two necklaces "Wow. A double thank-you"
(narrating) Later that night, we toasted Blanca, for making the life-saving serum and the others for saying behind to nurse the sick.
"To Blanca! and the amazing Madrigals!" Chico cheered with his wife Zita.
Eduardo: "The Florence Nightingales of San Lorenzo!"
As they cheered each other Acacia took a sip and held her stomach in pain. "EHH!" Ignacio rushed to check on her, "Are you okay, Honey? What's wrong?" he asked concerned for his wife's well-being.
"I'm fine, but when that drink hit my stomach... No good," Acacia says rubbing her stomach.
"Your stomach? Maybe you should lie down."
"Don't worry, I'm okay," she said trying to reassure everyone she was fine.
(narrating) Despite what Acacia had said, we were worried. Worried. We couldn't help but think...
~Sunset Arms boarding House~
Miguel lowers the top of the journal, "What was wrong with her?"
"Were you sick?" Asked Layla holding her mother tightly, "Not exactly," Acacia said.
"Well, she was, um... sort of, kind of, you know, in a manner of speaking..." the old man tried to explain but had a hard time.
Miguel: "Was it food poisoning?"
"No."
Gaby: "Tropical flu?" she guessed.
"No, whatever that is."
"Oh, I know," Miguel concluded.
"Do you?"
"She caught the sleeping sickness!"
"(Mimics buzzer). Nope, wrong, but thank you for playing."
"O-Okay, I give up."
"Don't give up, you quitter! Okay, I'll give you a hint. Your mother was going to have..." he waves over his stomach.
Maria guesses, "A hernia?" confused by her father's charade.
"No, no, no, no. It's a good thing she was going to have. It rhymes with maybe..." he hinted.
"Rabies!" Lala guessed.
"Oh! Think, she was going to have a..." (gestures a cradling move) "Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da!"
Mirabel gets it right, "A baby!"
"Oh yeah! Bingo!" he sits down in relief. "and she wasn't the only one."
~San Lorenzo clinic~
Blanca comes out with Angie and Acacia. "I'm pregnant." She Hugs Javier and announces, "We're going to have a baby."
Angie and Acacia had similar news and all of us were excited. Zita most of all since now her son, baby Raul, will have cousins his age to play with. The new parents shared a group hug.
~Sunset Arms boarding House~
Grandpapi looks to Layla, Gaby, and Miguel, "And do you know who those babies are?"
"Us?" answered Miguel.
(strokes his hair) "That's Right!"
"Oh, how exciting!" exclaimed Alma. All the Madrigals were getting excited about this passage, especially Bruno.
Back to the story, "So there you were, Miguel," (rubs his belly) "in your mommy's belly."
"Grandpa," sighed Luna.
~San Lorenzo~
(narrating) The last few months have been very productive. The guys and I have been clearing land, planting crops, and building a school, while the girls grew more and more pregnant. (interrupts as he gets into the scene of the story) "That's you, kids! Heh-heh-heh!"
"Grandpa..."
Blanca feels pain in her body as she flinches alarming Javier and the others.
"You okay? You look kind of pale," Angie asked concerned for her pregnant sister-in-law. "Never better," she smiles at Javier, indicating it is time.
Javier gasps, "You mean..." Blanca nods in confirmation.
"Okay." He whistles, Chico comes with a lifter, "Your ride's here."
The group moves through the jungle. Mateo and Eduardo carried Angie. While Zita, with baby Raul strapped to her, helped Ignacio bring Acacia.
Blanca points ahead, "Look, smoke. That must be the town!"
"That's great. We're nearly there."
Eduardo: "Well, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the hospital is just around that mountain."
"And the bad news?"
Eduardo: "The mountain... it's a volcano. It's called Volcán Turriable. But don't worry, volcanoes smoke all the time. I'm sure that's all it'll do." Then the volcano erupts.
The volcano continues to erupt and the animals start making sounds in panic. "You had to jinx it didn't you?!" yelled Chico.
"Oh, great! We get here right when it's erupting!"
"So am I!" Blanca said holding her stomach.
"Oh, crap same here!" Added Angie holding her stomach alarming everyone and then Acacia who just screamed from her contractions starting.
"Oh, this isn't good!"
~Sunset Arms Boarding House~
(reading) "The volcano started spitting out fire and smoke like crazy! It was both beautiful and terrifying at the same time." "Aw! Sorta like you, when you were born, Mija," he said to his daughter.
"Aw thank you, Papa," said Maria.
Miguel: (moves into view) "Then what? What happened!?"
"Okay, okay."
~San Lorenzo~
(narrating) The earth heaved and shook! The air thundered with the shrieks of jungle animals! And two bright rivers of molten lava came pouring down from every direction, cutting off our escape!
Fiery projectiles come flying down around the trio, as they avoid the lava.
Blanca groans, "I can't move. I have to lie down. Right. Now!"
(narrating) We had no choice, but to lay the girls right down on the trail. They were not very happy.
Blanca uses every punctuation in emphasis, "I. Am. Not. Very. HAPPY!!!!" The volcano eruption intensifies, and monkeys screech and flee.
Angie Holding her stomach in pain, "Guys it's time!"
"Okay, then we'll just have to deliver the babies right here, in this lovely spot-!"
"Dios mío! Look out!" Eduardo shouts alerting everyone to the lava flowing down behind them.
Javier screams at the fireball shooting toward them. Luckily, they avoided it. But there were still three women in labor.
Javier looks at their surroundings, "Geez, Eduardo, what now?" gasps as he sees a column of green smoke, "The Green Eyes!"
The lava keeps following them so Ignacio used his fire powers to slow it down and Javier used his levitation powers to transport them all to the location of the smoke. As they made it to the temple they saw three beds prepared inside.
"Ugh!" As the ground shakes. Each expecting father grabs a wet cloth and covers their wives face. Zita is the acting midwife for all three women.
"Remember, breath, breath. Just like in class!" Javier makes breathing blows. Blanca lunged at Javier, "Grrr! Shut up, shut up, shut up!!"
Eduardo and Chico go outside the temple, seeing all the destruction around them. Zita stays to help her sister and friends.
"Aaaaaaauuugghh! Ah! Aaaah! Ah... ah... ah! Aaaaaaah! Aaaaaaaah! Ah! AAAAAUUUUGGHH!"
The eruption abruptly stops. All animals fall silent as a baby's cry is heard.
Eduardo and Chico re-enter the temple. They see Blanca kissing a newborn on the head. Angie was holding her baby girl and Acacia was kissing Ignacio while holding they're baby.
Eduardo in amazement, "They have silenced all of nature."
Javier: "Our baby."
Blanca: "A miracle baby... Miguel."
Eduardo: "Miguel. That's his name?"
Blanca: "It was my great-great grandfather's name."
"What are the other babies' names?"
"This is Layla our daughter," Acacia said as Ignacio kissed her forehead.
"And this little glutton is our daughter, Gabriella," Mateo replied fondly as Angie fed the newborn baby her milk.
Eduardo smiles, "Beautiful names," then takes a good look at, "Miguel. He's a good-looking boy."
Blanca hands the baby to Javier, "We couldn't have done it without you, Eduardo. Thank you!" Kisses him on the cheek.
Javier: "He is a good-looking kid, isn't he?" to baby Miguel, "Hey. Hi. Hey, Miguel. Hello, baby boy. I'm your dad. And this is your lovely mom. You're so lucky."
"And so are we. We have three miracle babies, named Miguel, Layla, and Gabriella."
Green-Eye native quietly from the bushes, "The three..."
~Sunset Arms Boarding House~
"Wow! What an incredible story, I can't believe it!" exclaimed Raul.
Fanning himself, "Neither can I, it's amazing! I can't believe they didn't name you Ramírez!" General Posada said to Miguel.
"No, the volcano! I can't believe the way they were born!" Raul explained as the other kids nodded in agreement.
Even the adult Madrigals were astounded, "Isn't it amazing abuela your great-grandchildren stopped a volcano! Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm just overwhelmed but I'm very grateful that everyone was okay."
"I'm surprised my abuelo told a story he didn't exaggerate for once," says Zano.
"What, you think I was making it up all these years?!" asked General Posada.
"Well... actually, we did," said Luna.
G.P: "Me, make up a story!?"
"...It's been known to happen," said Raul.
"All right, sue me, I made up a story. But this one is a-hundred-percent true! You three were miracle babies! Born during a volcanic eruption!"
"So, why did the volcano stop when we were born?" Miguel asked, "Do you have an idea, Abulea Alma?"
"Lo siento Miguelito but no luck. There was Pepa's delivery with Dolores, but that was linked with her gift."
"Ignacio does have fire powers," Mirabel noted trying to theorize.
"Maybe... But I wasn't the one in labor," He corrected.
"Mmm, maybe your dad can shed some light on it. Let's see," reads, "I guess it will always be a happy mystery why the volcano stopped after our babies were born..."
"Well, that's lame! At least he could've made something up!" Granpapi exclaimed.
"So, what happened after that? Did they go back to their village?"
(sarcastically) "No, you all lived happily in an old stone temple surrounded by boiling-hot lava." (ba-dum-tss)
"Where did they go to the bathroom?" asked Lala.
"Yet another mystery!" (his stomach rumbles) "Oh! Speaking of bathrooms, that kung-pow shrimp is backing up on me! Be right back!"
Miguel laughs at the old man's antics, Maria decides to take over in the absence of her father as a storyteller.
Searching through the book, "All right, let's see. Temple... temple... Ah, here we are! (continues reading) "We've been back in our village for a week, and life is very different now that we have a baby!" Maria reads as she playfully winked at the kids.
Grandpapi returned from the bathroom, "You have a baby?!" he asked in surprise.
"Papi! I got a roll of tape and I'm not afraid to use it!" He blinks and Maria puts away the tape.
San Lorenzo/Javier and Blanca's Hut.
Maria narrates: Our normal routine is a thing of the past. Now we spend all our time concentrating on Miguel. Diapering, bathing, feeding, and most of all, trying to get him to sleep!
"Oof!"
At night, Baby Miguel crawls away from his parents' bed. J.C., sensing something missing, gasps, "Miguel! Where's Miguel?" he asks his wife. Both parents run outside to search for their son.
"Miguel! Sweetie!" Javier sees Baby Miguel crawl toward a snake, gasps, "Miguel! Come here!" and grabs him away from the snake.
(narrating) The others and I made a hard decision, but I think it's right. We're going to leave San Lorenzo, I think we've done some good work here. Zita wrote her parents and told them that it was time they met their grandkids and that we were coming home.
~Sunset Arms boarding House~
"That's me, the mom they wrote to. Should've been your name, girls!"
Layla rolls her eyes, "Grandma."
~San Lorenzo~
(narrating) "We'll miss our village in this country, it reminded us so much of our old town. We made many friends here, but it's all different now with Miguel and his cousins. I love my new son so much, he's changed our lives forever. I never thought we could be so happy."
Chapa catches up to their wagon and she successfully makes it on, as Javier laughs while holding her.
~San Lorenzo airport~
Eduardo with his girlfriend, "We'll miss you both so very much."
Javier: "And we'll miss you too, Eduardo."
Angie: "Thanks for everything. Everything."
While flying away from our old life and toward our new one, I was thinking about how nice and simple things will be back in San Angel. Even in the jungle, Acacia and Zita dreamed about their childhood in the big house, and their peaceful, quiet neighborhood.
~Boarding House stoop~
Ernie, Mr. Hyunh, and Oskar play instruments while the group arrives at the boarding house.
Blanca: "You must be quite the heroes to these people."
Acacia: "Or they're all just amazed someone left this neighborhood and then actually came back."
"What beautiful babies, she's got my hair!" Maria said referring to Layla.
"And my third eye," added General Posada. (The couples laugh)
"Don't encourage him."
~Montage at Sunset Arms~
Blanca loves our new life in the boarding house, and the babies are quite a hit with Layla and Gaby's grandparents.
Mateo's grandfather, Andreas, presses Miguel's nose and Packard's horn at the same time.
Maria walks with Manolo, and the others while pulling baby Lala, Gabi, and Miguel on a wagon. "Woo-woo! Woo-woo! Here comes the train!"
(narrating) We're all completely, blissfully happy together. (scene changes to the three newborn Madrigals' first birthday) So now Miguel, Lala, and Gabi are one. I can't believe it, I have a one-year-old son. and two one-year-old nieces. (Miguel puts out the candle with his drool, and gets his picture taken)
All: "Yay!"
"I think of my dad and hope I can be half as great as he is. He's always tried to be there for us. I wish he was here to meet his grandchildren I know he would love them as much as we do..."
"That afternoon we went to the neighborhood park. I bought Miguel a tiny blue hat. It doesn't fit him, but it just seems to suit him somehow." All three laugh as the hat falls off. "Then we parked the stroller and watched the other parents and their children playing. Younger versions of all of Luna and Raul's friends are at the park. "This neighborhood has plenty of babies for Miguel to play with; maybe they'll grow up to be friends someday."
The couple laughs at one of the toddler's behavior, then notice Miguel is gone.
Blanca gasps, "Where's Miguel?"
Javier and Blanca look around and searched the entire park. While their friends and family helped.
Javier: "Miguel?"
Blanca: "Miguel!"
Javier: "Miguel? Miguel!"
Blanca: "Miguel?"
Javier: "Miguel!"
Little Raul: "Heehee! Look! Look that!" Javier faces where Raul is pointing and sees Miguel at the top of a slide. "Miguel!"
Blanca: "Miguel! No! Don't move!"
Javier climbs up, but Miguel laughs and slides down.
Javier: "Miguel!!!" Blanca gasps and Miguel falls into a huge mud puddle.
Blanca and I have been on hundreds of adventures, but I was never so scared as when I saw baby Miguel standing on the top of the slide. As we hugged and kissed our boy after he was safe, we vowed:
"We'll never let you out of our sight again."
Later that night
"Happy birthday, one-year-old."
"We love you. Sleep tight." (singing softly) Lullaby, and good night. Sweet dreams, and sleep tight.
J.C. singing softly, Know, we love you, more each day. While you sleep and while you play
You're so sweet, through and through. Stay off the slide 'till you're two
(narrating) I love every day of our lives together. I'm looking forward to living near my siblings. Watching Miguel grow and learn more and more. One day we will visit Encanto and introduce our new family to our distant one. I would love to see how our cousins have grown. I feel so lucky. I would do anything in the world for my lovely Blanca and our dear little son, Miguel...
~Sunset Arms boarding house~
Miguel looks forlorn at hearing about the future that never was. His surrogate grandmother stops to look at him, then Maria turns a page in the journal. The rest of the family is forlorn as well aware of what comes next.
"Oh, well, it's the last page of the journal. It's a familiar story, and-"
"It's okay. ...I wanna hear it."
"All right, uh..."
~The Park~
(narrating) Eduardo arrived quite unexpectedly today. He came to tell us there's been another much worse outbreak of the deadly sleeping sickness in San Lorenzo. The new strain of the disease is spreading all through the region, and many Green Eyes have already died.
"...Please, just one final mission. You're their only hope."
The scene changes to Javier and Blanca's room.
It's a heartbreaking decision, but the Green Eyes have been like family to us. They saved our lives again and again; helped us to safety right before our baby was born. I don't want to leave Miguel...
~Sunset Arms boarding house~
Maria continued narrating, "...but our trip back to San Lorenzo will be... quick."
Angelina holds Arnold's shoulders, and tragic music plays while the rest of the journal entry is read.
"Angelina and Ignacio can look after him. Before we know it, we'll... be back... playing with our boy."
The flashback of the night Javier and Blanca depart appears.
(reading and narrating) I know that the whole time we're there... we'll both miss our little Miguel... terribly.
sighs* "Well, that's all he wrote. Quite an unexpected find, this journal."
"I'm glad that we found it. It's great to hear all these stories. I learned so much more about my parents." Miguel says hugging his family.
"They're great people, Miguel. And they love you so much!" said Angie as she hugged him.
"Now I know how hard it was for them to leave me. They had to do it, for the Green-Eyed People. I just wish I knew what happened to them." He said in her arms.
"Me too, Miguelito. But I think we've gotten all the answers we're going to get for one day," said Bruno.
Miguel sighs, "At least we have this. Can I take it?"
"Of course, it's all yours," Maria said giving him the journal.
"I think I'm gonna go outside and sit on the stoop for a while," Miguel said. "I'll go with you," said Luna.
"All right, Miguel. We're pooped anyway, we're going to bed. Goodnight." said General Posada.
"Don't let the horseflies bite." Maria kisses Miguel on the head.
"Good night. And thanks, for everything." As Miguel leaves with Luna, the rest of the family has a pow-wow on the journal.
"Bruno, are you okay?"
"Just overwhelmed by what I heard," the fortune teller said, "Ten years I knew I would see you again but not once did I get a vision of you three in danger and now Javier is... I don't even know," Layla and Gaby give their grandfather a hug which made the sad man smile seeing the proof that everything worked out.
Angelina looks to her brother, "Papá you know why we had to go our powers were growing and our frustration made it hard to control. I almost..." Shares a look with Alma who assured her she forgave.
"She's right and if we had a choice we would do it all over again," Ignácio says as he hugs Acacia from behind.
"If not for you," Zita says looking at all the Madrigals, "All of you, we would have never been blessed with such great friends."
Alma smiles, "And they would have never met such amazing people as you four. Gracias for proving this scared old woman wrong." She smiled as they all smile at her.
"As you can see we have experienced proving adults wrong," says Zano.
"I heard that!" Yelled General Pasado from above.
Everyone laughed, "I'm glad Miguel's hope has been restored," Dolores says as Isabel agreed with her, "Me too, pobrecito. Good thing Miguel accidentally found that journal huh? Nació," she asks her cousin.
"Yea almost like it was planned..." he says with a smirk. "What? You put that book there for Miguel?" Isa pondered.
"Hmm? Originally I was going to get it and read it for Miguel but then the little spitfire went and beat me to it," Everyone was impressed by how it all worked out.
"I hope we find his parents and see San Lorenzo I'm curious to see where the kids were born," said Luisa.
"Me too!"
"Ditto!"
"I would as well."
"Can you tell us what you saw in it?" Asked Antonio.
Chico, Zita, Cia, Nació, and Angie share a look, "Well it's hard to describe from memory but we do know that..."
~Boarding house stoop~
Miguel is looking through the pages, when he sees the last pages are stuck together. He separates them, revealing...
Miguel gasps, "A map! Luna look!"
"It must be the route your parents took on their last trip to the jungle!" they both run back inside. "Tías! Grandpa! You have to see this! We found a map!" Miguel announced.
