Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)
Disclaimer: I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn; Amano Akira-sensei does. Though, of course, the OC is mine.
Teaser: "I'll bite you to death." Everyone knew what this meant; except for Senritsu Nanami, who believed that it was only her underclassman, Hibari Kyoya's roundabout way of saying, "Notice me, senpai!" With him chasing her around the campus and, from time to time, even in the streets of Namimori, was she on the right track after all?
Kusakabe Tetsuya had been Hibari's right-hand man since the latter's first year in Middle School. He was already used to things that are considered far from normal since such is an indispensable part of serving Hibari, but this was something that he could never dream of happening.
It was a peaceful morning when he found a letter inside Hibari's shoe locker. Heavens forbid him from taking it as anything else but a challenge letter, so the moment he turned the enveloped and saw the heart-shaped sticker that kept it close, it was safe to say that Kusakabe lost his wits.
"Kyo-san!" Kusakabe shouted the moment Hibari entered the disciplinary office. He had been patiently waiting for him to arrive and the excitement was killing him.
Hibari took the letter from Kusakabe's hand and remained stoic even after noticing the pink sticker. He sat on the couch before opening the letter.
As Hibari's gaze trailed back and forth the paper, Kusakabe noticed a vicious storm brew in his blue-grey eyes.
Huh? That's not the right reaction. Kusakabe was confused. Was it a challenge letter after all?
"She wants to meet me at the school's rooftop," Hibari said.
It is a love letter! Kusakabe had to suppress a shout of joy. He was always worried of his leader growing old alone. Finally, he could see a beam of hope!
"Are you going, Kyo-san?" he asked, barely able to mask the excitement in his tone. Hibari did not take it for something else though.
"Of course."
It was a busy morning for the two of the highest officials in the student council. However, for Nanami, it was more than that. Today, the battle between her and Hibari would finally reach its conclusion.
Seeing that it was just the two of them in the room, Nanami spoke freely with eyes still on the papers. "Ogata-kun, have you talked with Hibari regarding the bout?"
"Uh..." For a second, Ogata seemed to have froze. "Yes."
Nanami paused and shot him a look. "What's with the 'uh'?"
Ogata's lips pursed into a thin line.
"I told him via mail," he explained hesitantly; and before Nanami could even reach a weird conclusion of him asking for Hibari's number or email address, he hastily added in defense, "I put a letter in his shoe locker."
Nanami gave no reply. Afraid to have failed her, Ogata inwardly wept.
It was too horrifying of an assignment, and he could not muster the courage to approach Hibari Kyoya. Who knows what would have happened the moment the words 'sparring match' left his mouth? The bloodlust-driven demon might have beaten him up right there and then.
However, how could his president possibly understand his worries? She was the woman who casually mocked the demon everyday!
"Okay. As long as he read it," answered Nanami after a moment of thought. At that, Ogata sighed in relief.
Nanami returned to her work, but something bothered her. Isn't that how love letters are usually given? she protested in her mind.
Convinced that it was only her otaku mind in the works, Nanami brushed away the thought. Little did she know that Ogata used the 'book' she always hid in her drawer as reference.
"Ah!" Nanami abruptly pulled away from her desk. She flashed an alarmed gaze at Ogata. "That guy never used indoor shoes. The letter will not reach him!"
Hibari never attended classes; thus, so his henchmen.
Kusakabe was patrolling around the school when he happened upon a sight that made him froze. A girl was infront of their leader's shoe locker—her hand on its now open door! He immediately hid in a corner and watched the unnamed female with profound intensity. He noticed her checking the compartment, and upon seeing that it was already empty, the girl seemingly heaved a sigh of relief.
It was her. The one who put the letter! He inwardly hollered. She's checking if Hibari-san got the letter, huh?
Nanami gently closed the door before wiping the drops of sweat that formed on her temples. A few minutes were left before classes would start so she had to run all the way from the third floor. She was about to head to her classroom when she caught sight of... a small black cloud floating at the end of the row of lockers?
"Classes are about to start, regent hairstyle," Nanami appeared at the corner even before Kusakabe managed to escape.
Why is she—?! Kusakabe was dumbfounded. To be fair, he did not recognize Nanami because her arm band was missing and her brown hair was messier than usual.
He thought in awe. Did she really give that love letter to Kyo-san?
"What did you see?" Nanami mumbled threateningly. Kusakabe could see the red spreading on her cheeks. "I-It's not what you think!"
A tsundere. He concluded, for a lack of better term. Still, Kusakabe approved of Nanami. Their leader seemed to have taken a liking to her, after all.
"Hibari-san already read the letter," was his simple reply. "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone."
At that, Nanami felt relieved. He seemed to be his most trusted subordinate, so he surely must have been informed of the contents of the letter—which he was not!
Of course! A levelheaded man such as Kusakabe couldn't have assumed that I put a love letter in Hibari's shoebox. Nanami scolded herself for letting her thoughts go wild. If only Nanami knew the truth, she would have fainted by then.
"Thank you. Please make sure that no one walks in on us," she said before obliviously walking away from a misunderstanding that she only further fueled.
Author's note:
Just a short extra! The fight will be in the next chapter! :-)
