Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)
Disclaimer: I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does. Though, of course, the OC is mine.
New Arc: The Cloud Guardian of Varia!
It was already summer vacation yet a certain brunette had to leave early for school. Nanami usually had council duties to attend to. That day, however, she went for a totally different reason: detention.
FLASHBACK
Just as Reborn had finished announcing the results of Nanami and Hibari's bout, a middle-aged man in red track suit suddenly appeared from the entrance of the building.
"Ah, it's the P.E. instructor!" Nanami yelled in alarm.
Hibari was stunned beyond belief. Of all the fights they had, he was never able to elicit a fearful response from her. Yet this old, bald man managed to do so from his presence alone? His eyes flashed dangerously as he turned to his new prey.
"Senritsu!" The teacher called out angrily. "What is this? Who are these people?!"
"That—" Nanami's mind raced in an attempt to think of an excuse. She couldn't just tell him that a group of gangsters were out for blood on one of their students for beating someone half to death!
A sudden scream interrupted her train of thoughts.
"You! Are you holding weapons?!" The teacher shakily pointed at the man who strode towards him with tonfas in hands.
She reached out to Hibari, but it was all too late.
FLASHBACK END
A heavy sigh escaped Nanami's lips as she remembered calling for an additional ambulance for the teacher that Hibari had unceremoniously assaulted. She started to regret accepting him in the committee, and only a few days had passed!
Nanami scratched her head, distressed at the thought of losing the teachers' trust. She could only hope that the news of her detention had not yet reached the ears of the student body. However, the moment her feet landed on the entrance, a loud yell echoed throughout the school grounds.
"Good luck on detention today, president!"
Nanami's her heart instantly sunk to her stomach. Her eyes shot towards the unknown men who lined up at the entrance of the school like yakuza. At that moment, she wanted nothing more than to send them 6 feet below ground!
"Who are you? Are you gangsters too?" she asked, ready to draw her metal spikes.
"President, it's me!" Kusakabe called before the brunette could unleash her inner demon. She glanced at him, and he could have sworn that she possessed the same glaring power as his master. Her expression softened, however, upon recognizing him.
"Aren't you Kusakabe?"
He immediately nodded and bowed. "Yes! As Kyo-san's henchmen, we are here to greet you and accompany you in your duties."
That didn't explain anything, Nanami thought. "Why is that?" she asked.
"Well, you are Kyo-san's superior, and that makes you our leader too."
She nodded in understanding. "You have a point, but Hibari's the only one I accepted. You're not a part of the committee."
Nanami immediately regretted breaking the news to Kusakabe and his men.
She had to spend the next few hours screening the new applicants who were too hopeful for her liking. Most of them were accepted as soon as they had promised to adhere to the school rules and trim their corn-shaped bangs. However, much to her surprise, it was Kusakabe who resisted the notion of cutting his hair—insisting that it was a symbol of their freedom to fight for the justice they believed in. Nanami was a fan of mangas, yes, but that didn't stop her from cringing upon hearing such a cliché shōnen line.
In the end, Kusakabe yielded to be able to remain by his master's side.
It was already noon when Hibari woke up. With the sun soaring high in the sky, he rose from his bed with a grunt, displeased with the heat that disturbed his peaceful slumber. He was going to school—not for summer classes or that ridiculous detention that he and Senritsu were put under for fighting in schoolgrounds. It was simply out of boredom.
The young raventte was on his way to Namimori High when he ran into a lady, who looked all too familiar to him. Doned in a tuxedo suit, the woman with long chocolate brown hair strode down the street with a confident aura.
Hibari's eyebrows twitched the moment he got a closer look at her.
After spending a few years with Sawada and his pitiful gang, even him was able to gain knowledge of the existence of that bazooka, which apparently had the power to switch someone with their future self.
His eyes narrowed in scrutiny. Was he seeing the effects of that tool?
"Senritsu?" he called out almost inaudibly. Just when he thought he had mistaken, the woman turned to look at him.
Her chocolate orbs, the same ones that had been mocking him since the start of school, widened in recognition. "You are... Hibari Kyoya."
Hibari smirked in satisfaction. The purple bazooka had finally served its use to him. He couldn't wait to see how much Nanami had improved in years.
All he had were mere five minutes, but that was more than enough. His tonfas appeared in his hands.
"Fight me, woman."
The new disciplinary committee was in the middle of their orientation when the door suddenly swung open. Everyone froze at the sight of Hibari Kyoya... and his beaten-up form.
It took Nanami a while to get over the surprise, before she rushed to the door with Kusakabe.
"What happened?!" she exclaimed, and the faces of the gangsters instantly flashed in her mind. Her eyes widened. "Did those men attack—"
"Why are you here?" Hibari muttered with unmasked confusion.
Nanami was stunned at him acting out of character. And why was he looking at her like he had seen a ghost? Did they hit his head so much that he had lost some of his memories?
"We have detention, remember?" she said worriedly.
"What time did you arrive?" he asked impatiently.
"Before 8, why?"
Hibari glanced at Kusakabe for confirmation, who immediately nodded in response.
"Nevermind that. Let's bring you to the hospital." Nanami reached for his arm to support him, but Hibari immediately slapped her hand away. Now, that's the Hibari she knew! The brunette felt glad and relieved despite his rude actions.
Hibari looked away, deep in thought. The woman he fought on his way to Namimori High definitely resembled Senritsu, but it couldn't have been her since she was at school since morning. Also, there was no trace of the kid in the cow suit, so there was no way she could have been hit by the bazooka.
If it wasn't her, does that mean that I was beaten by a stranger—a middle aged woman at that? Hibari's mood worsened and his scornful gaze returned to Nanami. "Leave. I want to sleep."
"What are you saying?" she protested. "You should go to the hospital first!"
"President," Kusakabe placed a hand on her shoulder and shook his head. With a pleading look, he said, "Let's leave Kyo-san alone for now."
Everyone exited the room. Nanami gave Hibari one last look before closing the door.
Nanami left the school after she had finished watering the plants, which was part of her detention. On her way back home, her thoughts never left Hibari and his battered form. What could have happened? How could he have been defeated despite being so strong? Nanami's hand curled into a fist, and she swore to hunt his attackers.
The brunette reached her home in no time. The moment she slid the door open, a person tackled her to the ground.
"My bambina! I missed you!" A woman screamed in her ears.
Nanami recognized that voice. She pulled away and her jaw dropped in disbelief. "M-Mom?!"
"You've grown so much! You're starting to look like mommy!" Senritsu Haruna beamed, delighted that her daughter took after her so much. They had spitting image. Anyone could mistake them for the other.
"What are you doing here? Weren't you in Italy?" Nanami asked begrudgingly. Her mother had been away from home for as long as she could remember. If the time she had spent with her would be added up, it wouldn't even reach one-fourth of her current age. Needless to say, her longing for her mother had gradually turned into loathing.
Haruna chuckled. "I kept my return a secret. Except from your dad, of course."
Nanami threw a chiding look at the man standing behind her mother. "S-Sorry, Nanami-chan. We wanted to surprise you."
The younger brunette sighed in defeat. "So, how long will you be staying this time?"
"A month, at least?"
Nanami was surprised. That was the first long break her mother had in a decade.
"Your master finally gave you a vacation, huh?" she muttered, still sulking.
Haruna failed to notice the displease in her daughter's tone. "Not quite. He's actually in Japan with me."
"Huh?" Nanami's newfound joy instantly crashed down. She snapped, "Then, isn't this just another business trip?!"
Her father immediately rushed to calm her down. He understood, more than anyone, where his daughter's anger was rooted from. He patted her shoulders reassuringly. "Nanami-chan, what's important is that your mother is here now."
She was about to protest when Haruna spoke up.
"What are you saying, bambina? You're the reason why we returned to Japan," she said and gave Nanami a knowing smile.
"It's time for you to meet your own master."
Author's Note:
The dad isn't that important in the story so I purposely did not mention his name. Huhu, sorry Senritsu!Papa! And, yes. It was Haruna who beat the living daylights out of Hibari. Can you guess how she recognized him?
Anyways, happy holidays! I hope you liked this new chapter! Please look forward to the new arc!
