Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)

Disclaimer: I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does. Though, of course, the OC is mine.

"My own master?" Nanami repeated, awestruck at first. It was her childhood dream to become as cool as her mom, until reality hit her hard and made her repulsive to the simple thought of it.

She scoffed. "I don't remember agreeing to be a servant."

"Oh my! We really are mother and child. I had the same reaction back then!" Haruna squealed and took Nanami in a tight hug. With a thoughtful gaze, she smiled upon reminiscing an old memory. "Weird enough, the moment I met my master, I was immediately overcome with the desire to protect him. As if I had been long fated to serve by his side."

Nanami only raised an eyebrow at her mother's words. She carefully removed the arms around her and walked away. "I'm not interested."

"Nanami," called Haruna, and the younger brunette froze at the mention of her name. Her mother must be pretty serious to drop the endearment. "Our family has been in their good hands since the Sengoku Period. Will you at least meet him? You don't need to treat this as a job. Just be friends and protect him if needed."

She sighed. "Just what do they do that requires protection?"

"They're mafia."

Nanami's jaw instantly dropped and she turned to her mother with a horrified expression. "Oh my god, do I call the police?!"

"No, bambina, they're good mafia!" Haruna exclaimed. "Actually, I believe you have already met them."

She blinked repeatedly. "Huh?"

Haruna was confused. How come her daughter was so clueless when she had even arranged for Nanami and the young master to attend the same school? Reborn was also sent there to make sure everything went smoothly. He should have explained things to her by then!

Something might had happened and prevented the process—was her best guess. Haruna decided to ask Reborn at a later time, before returning her full attention to Nanami.

"I'll tell you more about it when it's final. The tentative day for the meeting is this weekend."

Saturday came. While Haruna was in her usual tuxedo suit, Nanami was forced to wear a furisode, a formal yukata for young women in Japan. Together, they went to a traditional teahouse in the outskirts of Namimori. On their way to the assigned function room, Nanami noticed that most of the other customers were having omiai.

How great! While there she was, attending a master-servant meeting like a slave that was for sale! She really did not want to go, but it was too late to back out. Thankfully, when they reached the room, the other party had yet to arrive.

"I'll just go to the restroom," she said, needing a breather.

Nanami walked around the teahouse and ran into someone unexpected. Leaning on the veranda's railings was a familiar brunette boy.

"Sawada?!" she exclaimed. Tsuna turned to her in surprise and was more visibly shocked.

"Senritsu-senpai!"

"What are you doing here?" she asked, examining him from head to toe. He was donned in a black tuxedo, which was a poor fit for his timid expression.

Tsuna looked down, his bangs casted a shadow on his face. Trembling and in tears, he reached for her shoulders. "Senpai, please help me! I don't wanna get married!"

"You're here for an omiai?" Nanami was surprised. Tuxedos weren't usually worn for Japanese marriage meetings, she thought. Strange enough, she suddenly remembered her mother wearing the same clothes. Her eyes widened. "C-Could you be—"

"Please! My father is trying to marry me to his business partner's daughter!"

Oh, she was wrong. Nanami mentally scolded herself for even considering Sawada, the most fragile-looking student in his year, a part of the mafia society!

A sudden thud interrupted her train of thoughts. She looked down and found Tsuna begging on his knees! "You're a ninja, right? Let's jump through the trees!" he cried out.

Is he for real?! Nanami started to sweat bullets. "Sawada, I..."

Upon noticing her troubled expression, Tsuna slowly backed away. "Ah, sorry. You must be here for something important too. That was selfish of me."

"It's just—" he sniffed. "I want Kyoko-chan and nobody else."

That was all it took for Nanami, a hopeless romantic and a closet shoujo manga-enthusiast, to agree. It was bad to escape, but at least she would be able to protect the sacred love between two people.

Fuck the mafia.

"Alright, let's go," she said, surprising Tsuna as she hoisted him over her shoulder. She jumped to the nearest tree, and disappeared in the forest.

Fortunately, there was a summer festival in a nearby shrine and they hid among the crowd. Nanami was nonchalantly enjoying a fish-catching game, while Tsuna watched her with a troubled look.

"Is this really okay, senpai?" he asked. Nanami remained focused in the game, her eyes dared not leave her prey.

"What are you saying?" she said. "Just earlier, you were so desperate to escape."

"No, I mean... What about you?"

Nanami groaned in irritation. Tsuna was about to apologize when he realized it was because of the fish that torn her last paper scoop. She stood up and finally looked at him. "It's okay. I didn't want to go anyway. My mother is just trying to sell me like a slave."

Tsuna shrieked. "S-Should I call for a social worker?!"

"No!" she exclaimed then immediately looked away, embarrassed for showing him an unsightly side of herself. "It's an exaggeration, sorry. It just felt like that, but that's not really the case. I was there for... a business meeting."

That was the best cover-up Nanami could think of. After all, there was no way she could say that she was associated with the mafia!

Tsuna's eyes shone in admiration. "Senritsu-senpai came from a rich family?"

"Not as rich as yours, I'm sure," she commented with a teasing smile upon remembering his statement back in the teahouse. Only people from prominent families are forced to have omiai, at least in Japan. Seeing that he was forced to have one, Nanami assumed that Tsuna was one of them.

Before he could say otherwise, she added, "Are you and Sasagawa Kyoko dating?"

Tsuna's face instantly flushed the deepest shade of red and he chuckled sheepishly. "Not at all," he replied. Nanami deadpanned. That was the first time she heard someone say a sad thing so happily!

The two brunettes continued to leisure around the festival, unaware that they had an audience. Sawada Iemitsu, Senritsu Haruna, Reborn, and some other bodyguards from Vongola watched them from the shadows of a nearby forest.

"So they escaped together?" Iemitsu blinked in confusion. "Why? They seem to be getting so well."

"It's not what you think," answered Reborn. "I didn't tell Tsuna or Nanami about the relationship between the Sawada and Senritsu families. They just met and became friends naturally."

Iemitsu beamed in delight. "Oooh, that's better!"

"Your idiot son, upon seeing that most of the customers were there for an omiai, thought that we lied to him to hide that he would have one too. So he used Nanami to escape." Reborn explained, obviously irritated.

Iemitsu cackled. It was just like his son to misunderstand something so simple. "Who would want to marry that silly boy!"

"What are you saying? The young master's silliness is what makes him cute!" Haruna argued.

An hour had passed. Upon realizing that the two had no intentions of returning to the teahouse, one of the guards spoke, "What do we do, Haruna-sama? Do we take them back?"

"No," she grinned and rose from the bushes. "Let me try something."

A loud gunshot was heard and the festival was thrown into chaos. Civilians were almost caught in a stampede as they fled from the armed men in suits who suddenly appeared from the forest.

Tsuna and Nanami's eyes widened in recognition. Mafia?!

"Here you are, Neo Vongola Primo. We'll be taking your life!" All of them aimed their guns at the Tsuna. However, before he could enter the Hyper Dying Will mode, Nanami tackled him to the ground.

"Run, Sawada!"

"No, senpai, you run! I'll deal with them," he protested.

Nanami could see the determination in his eyes, but she wasn't letting a fragile underclassman fight just for her to escape. "This isn't the time for keeping appearances! Leave them to me!"

The attackers took advantage of their little argument and fired their guns at both of them. Nanami managed to act swiftly and carried Tsuna away. However, one bullet grazed her leg and she grimaced in pain.

"Senpai!" Tsuna cried out. "Please, believe in me. I'll protect you!"

At his compelling words, Nanami yielded and released him. Much to her surprise, as soon as his foot touched the ground, flames suddenly burst from the ring on his finger. In a matter of seconds, all of the men in suits were knocked unconscious.

Nanami was dumbfounded. She didn't even know where to start. She stared at Tsuna, wide eyed.

"Sawada, you're a ma..." He winced, afraid to be associated with that word. "A magician?" she uttered.

Tsuna blinked repeatedly. "Huh?"

"Your flames! Where did that come from?" she asked excitedly. "Can you do a hat trick too?"

Tsuna chuckled in relief and decided to leave it at that. The flame disappeared from his forehead and he knelt before the other brunette. He was too busy examining the injury on her knee that he failed to notice the weapon that flew towards him.

Kunai?! Nanami thought in alarm and immediately deflected it with the use of her metal spikes. However, another blade hid in its shadow. It aimed for Tsuna's neck. If that hit him, he would surely die!

"Weird enough, the moment I met my master, I was immediately overcome with the desire to protect him." As her mother's words flashed through her mind, a strange feeling enveloped Nanami's entire body.

It was almost like an awakening.

Her free hand felt light and she raised it protectively at the level of his neck. The blade dug on her skin and flesh. It felt painful, but Nanami couldn't care less.

She glared at the direction where the familiar blade came from. "You've gone too far, mother."

"Bambina!" Haruna revealed herself from the bushes and bellowed, "I didn't know you would block it like that!"

Another figure rose from the same place hiding place. "Haruna, you harmed your own daughter!"

Tsuna stared at the new entrants, particularly at blonde man, with mixed confusion and disbelief.

"Dad?!"

Nanami almost snapped her own neck to look at Tsuna. "Dad?" she repeated.

Slowly, realization dawned on her. Tsuna came to the same teahouse to meet someone. He was wearing a suit, which was too unusual for an omiai. The unknown men from earlier seemed to have their attacks focused on him. Most importantly, her mother and his father knew each other and were following them together. All of those could only mean one thing!

She turned to Haruna, who confirmed her thoughts with a knowing smile.

"Nanami, the person beside you is your master. The Vongola Neo Primo, Sawada Tsunayoshi."

Author's Note:

No one guessed it right in the previous chapter huhu! So, yeah. The Senritsu family had been serving the Sawada family since the end of Sengoku Period. In the first chapter, there was a clue that Nanami was somehow familiar with the Sawadas. Maybe, there was a time during her childhood that Haruna talked to her about it.

FUN FACT: Sengoku Period (or Age of Warring States) concluded in 1600s. That's 400 years ago. 400! So, I wonder who the first master was? *smirks* Oh, I really love foreshadowing!
