Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)

Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does; though, of course, the OC is mine.

It had been a week since Nanami was abducted and locked inside a secluded mansion by Belphegor. At first, she made several attempts of escaping, but after learning that they were in Italy—a country from an entirely different continent—she had no choice but to give up. After all, she had no plans of swimming thousands of nautical miles just to return to Japan. Not to mention that she was also thalassophobic.

"Don't worry. I'll send you back if you win the competition!" he reassured her.

In a few days time, the banquet would begin. Nanami refused to be deceived by the beauty of that word for she knew that a number of hitmen and assassins would be present along with her. Surely, what awaited her was a bloodbath, not a ballroom dance.

Ah, how desperately she wanted to escape. Maybe she should really swim back instead?

"Hey, little girl, let's continue your training." Belphegor cut her train of thoughts and dragged her outside of the bedroom.

Her blonde abductor had been helping Nanami improve her skills. Obviously, it was because he wanted his representative to win. He said that he would be given a month-long vacation if she won. Nanami, despite reluctant, knew better than to go against her attacker.

"Here. You're almost out of medicine, right?" He tossed a small metal box at the brunette. Unlike Hibari, Belphegor willingly gave her Hyper Dying Will pills.

The first time Nanami awakened her flames, she almost fainted. The purple flames that burst from her weapons were so humongous that she was convinced that it would burn her alive. However, as days passed by, she became accustomed to it and even begun to feel an increase in her sense of awareness.

"Ushishishi!" Belphegor laughed wickedly. "I can already see myself swimming in the sea. Taking a vacation is so nice!"

Nanami was very confused at the confidence and trust that Belphegor had in her. Yes, they used similar fighting style (as they both wielded blades) and she was a ninja, but wasn't he too sure of someone he barely knew? Her opponents would be professional hitmen and assassins. Why did he choose her of all people?

"Don't forget your hairpin." He reminded her as they entered the garden that served as their training ground.

The hairpin was a catalyst for Nanami, a beginner, to control her flames. After she had clipped it on the side of her head, she took a Hyper Dying Will pill. However, before she could pull out a kunai, Belphegor aimed a gun at her and pulled the trigger without warning.

Nanami barely managed to evade the bullet. If her senses had not been enhanced by the pill, she would have already died!

"You almost killed me!" she protested.

"To be fair, I was trying to kill you." He smiled and moved to take another shot, but Nanami had already prepared a kunai and buried it on the muzzle of his gun.

Impressed, a Cheshire-like grin appeared on his face and Belphegor clapped his hands like a madman. "Very good! You just increased your chances of survival!"

Nanami remained notably furious. The young prince decided to explain himself. "Majority of your enemies will be wielding guns. We gotta make sure you don't get shot and die, right?"

"You just tried to kill me. They can't kill me if I'm already dead."

He shrugged at her snide reply. "I thought, if you're gonna drop dead anyway, the sooner it was done, the better."

"It is better that you bring me back to Japan!" she yelled, her patience running dangerously low.

Belphegor laughed and replied teasingly, "No can do, silly!"

"Well then," he flashed her a murderous look before pulling out another gun. "Shall we continue?"

After a few days, Nanami and Belphegor departed on a helicopter and headed to where the competition would be held. To pass time, they had a small chat (which was mostly one-sided on Belphegor's part) and he explained that the Banquet in the Clouds was called as such because the chosen event place was at the top of a mountain, hidden in clouds.

Soon, they arrived and were ushered inside a castle.

"By the way, this is my castle," he said. In surprise, Nanami almost tripped on the stairs. Belphegor snickered. "I told you, didn't I? That I'm a prince."

The moment the two entered the hall, all heads turned to them. Needless to say, while Belphegor basked in their undivided attention, Nanami felt very uncomfortable under their curious stares.

"Is that Sir Belphegor's representative?"

"What a stunning lady! Is she from the royalty as well?"

Of course, Belphegor made sure that Nanami was properly dressed. He gave her a white dress and a Burberry trench coat that perfectly complemented her brown hair. A 5 inches-high red heels would had been perfect, but he decided to settle for 2 inches to avoid compromising her performance. Heclicked his tongue in regret of not training her in heels!

"Oi, Bel." A voice disrupted his train of thoughts. Belphegor looked over his shoulder and found Squalo, along with a woman whom he assumed to be his representative.

He hummed in amusement. "Squalo, what a surprise! Never did I expect that you would pick a woman as your representative!"

"I don't want to hear that from you," he retorted and glanced at Nanami. She flinched under his fierce gaze and he smirked. "It looks like you picked a weak one, though."

Nanami was obviously offended and glared at him in protest. Belphegor laughed. "Say that again and she'll turn you into shark's fin."

He and Squalo bickered away to where the other Varia members were waiting, leaving the two women by themselves. Nanami glanced at her new companion and was surprised to meet her gaze.

"Greetings, milady. I'm Lilian, from the Hong family." The woman bowed at Nanami with right hand placed on her left enclosed fist. Her graceful action, which was a stark contrast to her overbearing employer, caused a handful of silky black locks to slip from her shoulders, and Nanami could not help but wonder if the woman came from a noble family. The green Chinese dress she wore was undeniably elegant and a perfect match to her beauty!

Once done with her daydreams, the brunette gave a warm smile and a courteous bow in return. "Hi, I'm Senritsu Nanami. I'm looking forward to working with you."

The woman was noticeably surprised at her introduction, which confused Nanami. Did she say something unnecessary?

"Oh, it would be weird to work with a competitor, wouldn't it? Sorry." She scratched the back of her head and laughed sheepishly.

"That's not—!" Lilian reached out a hand to Nanami, her previous dignified stature was completely replaced with meekness. However, it only lasted for a few seconds as she was quick to regain her composure. She smiled. "If anything, I am thinking of offering Miss Nanami a temporary alliance."

"Alliance?" repeated Nanami.

Lilian nodded. "There are at least a hundred participants in this competition and among them are the six chosen representatives of the Varia members. It is safe to say that we are the strongest competitors. Thus, many will focus on bringing us down."

Indeed, Belphegor warned her that something like that could happen. Nanami easily reached a decision.

"I suppose my earlier introduction wasn't off the mark, then?" she chuckled and extended a hand at her new companion. "Pleased to be your acquaintance, Lilian-san."

The ravenette paused with a thoughtful look before shaking her hand. "Lilian would be fine, Miss Nanami."

Meanwhile, at the table where the Varia members had gathered, a lively chat ensued.

"Geez, why didn't you tell us? We could have gotten ourselves an all-women representative team and make them iconic as the Charlie's Angels!"—had been the topic after Lussuria learned of Belphegor's and Squalo's choice of candidates.

"Shut your trap!" hollered Squalo. "I doubt there's even a female boxer as crazy as you out there!"

"Same goes for me. I heard women hates lightning." Levi A Than had a small pout on his lips. Belphegor unleashed his signature chuckle at their senseless predicament.

"And do you really think the boss would pick a woman as his candidate?" scoffed Mammon who, just like Reborn, was still in their infant form. "Your Charlie's Angels dreams would be impossible even if us five had female representatives."

Lussuria sighed in defeat and decided to lecture about sexism instead. While the others tried to shut him up before they could earn the wrath of Xanxus, Belphegor took a seat beside Squalo.

"Is that woman a swordsman like you?" he asked.

"Yeah," Squalo answered vaguely before shifting the conversation to Belphegor. "Your girl doesn't look special in the least."

The prince gave him an offended look. "Excuse me? Her coat is Burberry!"

"I'm not talking about that!" he grumbled in annoyance. "Her aura... I don't feel any bloodlust from her. She looks just like a random kid that you dressed up on a whim!"

Belphegor shook his head and snickered, amused at Squalo's ignorance. He was almost hit on the head for his obvious demeaning action, but was saved when he mentioned that he would let the other man in on a secret. Squalo, despite furious, was overcome with curiosity. Belphegor pulled him closer and whispered—

"That girl is a direct descendant of the founder of Varia."

Author's Note:

Ara ara, I wonder who that founder is ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
