Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)

Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does; though, of course, the OC is mine.

Happy 18th chapter! This is for you, Hibari! :-)

Days before the banquet, at Namimori High School, a group of young male students gathered inside the Disciplinary Committee room.

"What?" An agitated frown graced upon the usual composed face of Hibari Kyoya. He glared at the thing that rested in Sawada Tsunayoshi's hands: a canary mask that was obviously modeled after his pet bird.

While he did say that he would bring Senritsu Nanami back, there was absolutely no way he would be putting that anywhere near his head.

"No."

Tsuna was on the verge of tears. He was already on his knees, begging, "Please, Hibari-san! This is the only way you can infiltrate the competition!"

"Indeed," Reborn nodded. "We can't use Chrome's illusions for this because Viper will see through it."

Unconvinced, the skylark remained adamant. He turned away in disinterest.

"Don't worry, Hibari," Yamamoto grabbed his shoulder and smiled. "Just imagine that Hibird has perched on your hea—"

He whacked his stomach and Yamamoto doubled over on the floor. "Save her yourself then."

"Shouldn't you take responsibility? It's your fault she got abducted in the first place," muttered Gokudera.

Hibari flashed him a murderous look. "Did you say something?"

Gokudera flinched under his intense gaze, but refused to back down. "If you didn't leave her alone back then, she wouldn't have been kidnapped!"

Tsuna quickly pulled his arm. "Calm down, Gokudera-kun!"

"But, Tenth!" He turned to his boss before angrily pointing at Hibari. "This guy just doesn't get it! Senritsu could die, but all he's worried about is what he'll look like in a bird costume!"

Hibari strode towards Gokudera, and the latter pushed Tsuna away to prevent him from getting involved in their fight. The silverhead did his best to stand his ground despite being intimidated by the skylark. He wasn't wrong! He shouldn't be scared!

Hibari noticed the slight shivering of his knees. They were only an arm's length away from each other, but Gokudera still refused to move an inch and continued to glare at him. For that bravery, he decided to let him off.

"That woman is not as weak as you think she is."

Everyone was dumbfounded at his statement. Tsuna, who had become more observant through the years, noticed the small smirk on his lips. However, it disappeared as soon as it surfaced.

"So stop the fuss and scram. You're disturbing the peace of the school," he said before letting out a yawn.

Hibari settled himself on the seat of the disciplinary chairman and rested his legs on the table, ready to sleep. He hummed against the comfort of the office chair and noticed how soft it was compared to the one he had in middle school, being subtly reminded that it might had been that way since the owner was a girl.

Tsuna and the others defeatedly exited the room. Reborn, however, made sure to leave the mask after noticing an almost inscrutable frown that had formed on Hibari's face.

Hibari Kyoya arrived in Italy just in time for the start of the competition. He was able to attend the banquet through the assistance of a hatted infant who acquired an invitation letter by courteously borrowing from one of the participants.

He glanced once more at the mask with a hint of disgust before looking at Reborn. "No one should know about this except for us."

"Of course," he answered with a smile that seemed dishonest. Unfortunately, Hibari had no way of confirming his suspicions since Reborn was practically impossible to read.

"I trust that you'll keep your promise, infant," he repeated for safety measures before placing the wretched thing on his head.

. . .

Hibari had not expected to find the person he was looking for as soon as the competition started—and in such an extravagant manner that anyone could hardly miss. Donned in a dress that he immediately branded as a violation against the school rules, Senritsu Nanami entered the castle with Belphegor trailing behind her.

While he made sure to distance himself the crowd, gossips still managed to reach his ears.

"Is that Sir Belphegor's representative?" asked an unknown onlooker.

His eyes narrowed knowingly. Indeed, as Reborn had surmised, Nanami was abducted to serve as a candidate in the competition. As to why she was chosen, he did not know, nor was he interested in knowing. All that mattered to him was to take her back and restore order in Namimori High.

During dinner, Hibari completely ignored the food and focused on the brunette. His attention was momentarily averted, however, to the people who started collapsing from what he assumed to be food poisoning. He turned to Nanami in slight worry and was surprised to see her unaffected.

She ate like a starved carnivore, so how come she was still alive and well?

"Wow," he mumbled in sadistic amusement. Not only was she physically strong, but her body was resilient to poison as well? Indeed, she never failed to surprise him.

An idea crossed his mind and it sent shivers down his spine. Maybe, saving her could come at a later time.

As Nanami still ingested poison, she soon lost consciousness. Hibari watched her from his seat and, for a moment, their gazes seemed to have connected.

He was then escorted to a room and, after he had bitten the assassin that was sent to him to death, he searched for her room.

"Stop, you perverted freshman!" He heard a familiar scream and instantly knew where to find her (and who she was referring to).

Hanging from a window on the floor above her room, the skylark watched Nanami let her attacker escape.

"How foolish," he commented with an unimpressed gaze. Hibari did not bother giving her assassin a chase and simply returned to his room to sleep.

. . .

The next morning, Hibari was told to bring an《 Arcobaleno Pacifier 》for the third trial. He consulted Reborn, who easily guessed that it was an assignment from Mammon.

Reborn could have given him his old pacifier, but decided against it since it might cause the Varia members to doubt his identity. Instead, he contacted Skull and forced him to lend his pacifier.

Hibari handed it to Mammon, who immediately asked his affiliation with the previous Purple Arcobaleno. He quickly denied any association with Skull despite meeting him before.

"He's a pushover so I targeted him," he answered, and that was all it took for Mammon to believe his story.

Then, the fourth trial came. Reborn rigged the assignment of partners for Hibari to finally come in contact with Nanami. The plan was for them to escape during the mission. However, unbeknownst to him, the skylark had a different idea in mind.

"I want to fight you at your strongest."

His desire was only fueled upon witnessing firsthand the shinobi abilities that Nanami had never shown at school.

Hibari decided to survive the trial so he could fight her to his heart's content during the final round. It did not matter if he achieved it through a joint travel. As long as his mask was on, Nanami would never know who she was carrying on her back.

With that, his pride and dignity were sure to remain unscathed.

However, as the saying goes, nothing ever goes smoothly.

Senritsu Nanami stared at the man in front of her as if her eyes would gouge out.

"H... Hibari?"

"You ordered me to focus on deflecting traps, but you're unable to dodge a single log?" he uttered, his every word was dripping with murderous intent.

Hibari raised a tonfa and Nanami only shut her eyes, unable to defend herself because of her bound hands. Upon receiving no blow or any form of attack, she slowly opened her eyes and found that he had stopped just before hitting her head.

He retracted his weapon, but a deep frown remained on his face. Nanami remembered that his nose was bleeding.

"I'm sorry! My senses became dull because of the rain," she quickly apologized and tried to reach for her pocket. "Here, I'll lend you a handkerchief—ah. It's in my trenchcoat!"

With his mask gone, Hibari could finally see clearly. He watched Nanami as she looked from side to side in a panic, and noticed that the rain had her drenched from head to toe. Her wet brown locks were stuck to the sides of her pale face. Her shoulders were obviously shivering from the lack of cover, which made him wonder why she chose to wear a dress that barely covered anything and was made of thin material, seeing how the cloth had somewhat become transparent, exposing her skin as it clung to every curve on her body—

His eyes swiftly returned to meet her startled gaze. Nanami flinched upon feeling his eyes grow sharper.

"That gaudy outfit is against the school dress code."

She sighed, but smiled. Hearing his scoldings somehow made her at ease. "Is this the time to talk about that? We're not at school. We're not even in Japan."

It was the skylark's turn to look from side to side. She followed his gaze once it had stopped and immediately jumped towards a spot below a certain tree. She picked up his bird head which, upon closer inspection, was actually a mask.

Nanami jumped towards the tree branch where he rested and extended her still metal-coated arms. "Here's your uh pfft costume."

Hibari gave her a warning glare. "Did you just laugh?"

"No," she spoke in a manner that obviously feigned innocence. "Of course nooo—aha."

A chuckle escaped her lips. Nanami, aware that she could no longer hold herself back, simply accepted her fate and burst out laughing, "HAHAHA AAAH AHAHAHAHAAAA!"

Her manic laughter echoed throughout the forest. She rolled on her back and waved her legs like an idiot. "Oh my god! I never would have thought it was you! No, actually, I had at one point, but I quickly dismissed the idea? Anyway, hahaha this is the best!"

Needless to say, a certain brunette was bitten to death.

Nanami had seemingly regained her sanity after being hit in the head by Hibari. "I'm terribly sorry for that unsightly outburst," but it was worth it. She added the last one in silence, not regretting anything in the slightest.

"Mention this to anyone and I'll bury you in the school garden," he warned. It was obviously not an empty threat.

She nodded. "Okay."

"So, why are you here?" Nanami swiftly changed the topic. "Did you come to Italy to save me?"

He let out a tired sigh. "The infant asked this favor from me. Namimori High is currently in a mess after you disappeared so I decided to bring you back."

Indeed, the brunette left a lot of unfinished work in school: the clubs' budget proposals, the plan for the Sports Day event, the assignment of new officers, and many more. She internally wept as she could already picture herself getting buried in paperwork.

"I see," she muttered, before kneeling with her back facing him. "Let's go."

Nanami waited for a few seconds before looking over her shoulder. Hibari did not move an inch. She tried her best not to crack a smile, knowing that it would only make the situation more difficult.

"We can't leave this place if I don't carry you."

He lifted his tonfas and she thought he would hit her again, but he slammed them against the metal weights on his legs instead. However, it did not bulge one bit.

"You already tried that earlier and it didn't work," she argued.

"Shut your mouth."

Okay, he was pissed. Nanami knew not to push his buttons when he was already furious.

Hibari unleashed a great amount of flames and hit the metal once more. While it did bulge, the metal only seemed to cling to his skin more. He discreetly hissed in pain and irritation.

The brunette remained silent and waited for him to surrender. Soon, she heard rustling of clothes and was surprised when her back was enveloped in a suit. It might have been drenched with rain, but the material was thick enough to provide comfort to her shivering shoulders.

She slightly turned around and noticed that Hibari only remained in his purple dress shirt and black pants.

What, so even Hibari can be a gentleman? she thought.

And what was her type of man? Men who were gentle. Yes, like Usui Takumi.

"...Thank you," she muttered with a frustrated frown before facing forward to hide a small blush that was forming on her face.

Without warning, Hibari suddenly leaned on her. With his entire weight on her back and an arm lazily wrapped around her neck, it gave her the illusion that he was hugging her.

"I love you."

Their current situation made her remember the peculiar dream that she had last night. A blush spread uncontrollably on her face.

Hibari raised his free arm that held a tonfa. He threatened, "If you dare look behind, I'll—"

"Bite to death, yes. I know. I won't." Nanami spoke a bit clumsily.

Hibari gave her a strange look and noticed that her ears were red. He smirked. Despite the thick suit that separated their skins, he could clearly feel her increasing heartbeat against his calm own.

It would be a lie if he said he didn't enjoy it. After all, he enjoyed tormenting her in whatever way possible.

After Nanami had blocked out her, daresay, borderline-perverted thoughts, she was able to enjoy the travel.

Hell yeah! She was carrying Hibari Kyoya, the infamous demon of Namimori, on her back! Ah, only if someone could take a picture of her giving him a piggyback, she would make sure to pass it on to her descendants as a family heirloom.

On another note, she thought they would take that chance to escape, but Hibari said that they had to finish the competition. Nanami assumed that it was Reborn's decision, but, unbeknownst to her, the skylark was going against the wish of the hatted infant.

After surviving traps and an almost landslide, the two reached the castle. Hibari made sure, albeit reluctant, to wear his bird mask to not be recognized by the Varia members. Nanami had to stop herself from laughing to not earn his wrath.

"Congrats for passing!" It was Belphegor who greeted them. Lackeys appeared from his back and they rushed to remove their handicaps. He looked at Nanami.

"You look like a mess," he said but immediately added, "A hot mess, but a mess nonetheless. You should be more careful of your looks since you're representing me."

Nanami wanted to slam his face on a tree for acting so entitled, but simply decided against it. She ignored his beratings, letting it enter in one ear and pass in the other, until he screamed.

"Where's Burberry?!"

Nanami gave him an annoyed look. "Who's that?"

"The trench coat, you uncultured brat!" he pinched her cheeks mercilessly.

A sudden bump on the shoulder made Belphegor release his grasp on the brunette. He glanced over his shoulder and looked at the man who bumped on him and walked away without showing any hint of remorse.

Belphegor hummed dangerously as he eyed the unnamed participant. He was about to follow him, Nanami grabbed his arm.

"Forget it. He doesn't speak human."
