Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)

Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does; though, of course, the OC is mine.

The afternoon in the disciplinary office was filled with peaceful silence. Kusakabe Tetsuya, however, could be seen looking over the empty couch every 10 minutes with a seemingly forlorn expression.

"It's been a week since the president last dropped by," he sighed.

Nanami always made sure to visit their office daily. While Kusakabe understood that it was done to monitor Hibari and his tendencies to abuse his authority, he, at one point, started to believe that she actually enjoyed their company.

Until, one day, she stopped coming without warning or anything of the sort.

"I wonder if something happened," Kusakabe muttered. A sudden thud broke his train of thoughts, and he immediately looked towards his superior, who had just finished working on an important file.

Lifting the pen he intentionally dropped on his desk, Hibari met Kusakabe's gaze. "There's nothing for her to do here if Kurokawa Hana agrees to deliver the documents in her stead."

In the first place, it was unusual for the busiest person of the student council to be the footman of documents. Hibari knew that Nanami only did that because the other members were too afraid to approach him. If Kurokawa hadn't become the secretary, he was sure that she would still be running errands for them like a lackey.

His eyes narrowed murderously. Herbivores. Maybe he really should've personally taught them a lesson.

Kusakabe watched Hibari silently. Sensing his mood drop at the mention of Nanami caused the assistant to reach a wrong conclusion. "Kyo-san, did you two have a fight last week?"

"Vice-chairman."

The temperature in the room seemed to grow colder. Hibari flashed Kusakabe a warning glare. "Aren't you oddly talkative today?"

"My apologies! I'll get to work right away!" Kusakabe ran to his table and took the papers before escaping to the door.

Another week passed by without Nanami visiting the disciplinary office. One afternoon, Kusakabe was patrolling the hallways when he bumped into someone.

"Oh, Kusakabe, what a coincidence!"

He already recognized her voice before he could look down to meet the gaze of her smaller figure.

At the familiar sight of Nanami holding a stack of documents, walking towards the direction of their committee, Kusakabe was filled with glee. A small smile adorned his usually stoic face. "President, are you heading to the disciplinary office?"

She momentarily broke eye contact. "Yes—I, I mean, no. Not anymore."

His smile instantly faded.

A pang of guilt hit Nanami. She cleared her throat before her voice could crack along with her will. "Kurokawa is absent, so I was going to deliver these papers. But since we ran into each other, I no longer need to go there because you can hand them to Hibari instead. Thank you very much."

An awkward silence fell between the two.

Kusakabe only stared at Nanami.

That was obviously a prepared excuse if her robotic speech was anything to go by!

He was confused. Why go to such lengths?

...Was she avoiding them?

"Sorry, but I'm in the middle of my patrol." Kusakabe gave an excuse of his own. Of course, if the president really needed his help, he was more than willing to extend a hand.

But something was definitely off.

"You can give it to the chairman directly," he added with a respectful bow. "I'm sure that he will be very pleased to see you."

For a moment, Nanami wore an inscrutable expression.

"I doubt that."

"Huh?"

Before Kusakabe could question her statement, she already had the papers pushed to his chest. "Anyway, I'm leaving it to you!"

Nanami then sprinted away but almost fell when she bumped into another person. It was the vice president.

"You had me worried! Why did it take you an hour to give him the file—" She quickly covered Ogata's mouth before dragging him away. But, it was too late. Kusakabe had already overheard their conversation.

A sense of eureka hit him. He did not hear any footsteps when they ran into each other. Could it be... that she was already standing there in wait for him to pass by?

"Chairman, we have a problem!"

Kusakabe burst into the room and strode towards Hibari, who immediately turned grim upon seeing the obvious panic of his assistant. It was very rare to see Kusakabe in such a state, making him think that a dire emergency had occurred on the school grounds. He reached for his tonfas, ready to head out when Kusakabe discarded the stack of documents on his desk and hollered—

"The president is avoiding you!"

Hibari gave him a blank look.

A second later, Kusakabe Tetsuya was found lying on the floor.

After giving his tonfa a good spin, Hibari returned his weapons in the drawer. He went back to his duties and started on the newly-arrived files. "If you have time to fool around, get back to work."

"I was patrolling when I ran into the president." Kusakabe insisted on the topic as he struggled to lift himself from the ground. "She's avoiding you, Kyo-san."

"And why should that bother me?" Hibari remained indifferent, his gaze never leaving his work. "Herbivores avoid me out of fear, and fear begets respect. I see no problem with it."

In fact, it was the normal reaction. Hibari and the disciplinary committee always had students running away with tails between their legs, even back in middle school. Their infamous reputation played a big factor in preserving order, so it was more of an advantage than anything else.

Kusakabe watched him hesitantly.

"But you said it before, chairman. That the president is not a herbivore."

His pen stopped moving.

Right. This was Senritsu Nanami they were talking about — the student council president who dared and managed to confiscate his weapons during the first day of class.

Hibari closed his eyes and leaned back on his chair, slightly displeased that the cushions were nowhere as soft as the ones that belonged to that woman. Maybe I should drag it from her office the next time I go there. He silently contemplated before looking at his assistant. "Then, are you implying that she's hiding something?"

Kusakabe recalled their earlier interaction. "Yes, that seems to be the case."

"Hmm," Hibari turned to the document on his desk, his eyes tracing a familiar signature and name. "Knowing her, it must be council-related."

Kusakabe thought differently but decided not to say anything more.

Hibari was on his way out to patrol around the school when he found a certain brunette standing in front of the shoe lockers. Usually, she would have already noticed his presence through her trained ninja senses that she oh-so-proudly bragged about. Seeing how she did not react despite him practically looming over her made him sure that she was either ignoring him or was just too distracted to notice.

Either way, he found her guilty.

"To see that you're still here at this hour, you must be having troubles with the council again."

Nanami looked at Hibari with an urgency that almost made her neck snap.

How did I not sense?! After scolding herself for letting her guard down, Nanami opened her mouth to retort but almost immediately stiffened.

The silence lasted for a painful minute.

Hibari's previous neutral expression slowly turned into a frown as he watched her eyes shift between him and the other students exiting the building. Irritation was steadily crawling up to him that he failed to hear the whispering onlookers.

"Is that the president and Hibari-san?"

"Oh my, are they going home together?"

"I knew it. They're dating!"

"You ship it?"

On the other hand, their voices were all that filled her head.

Thrown in a frenzied panic, Nanami slammed the locker door, the force causing it to bounce and hit Hibari right in the face, before running away.
