Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)
Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does; though, of course, the OC is mine.
After that incident, the two had reverted back to a life of daily chase. However, with Hibari gaining the authority of an officer, he now declared himself free from the school law — an argument that no one (even Kusakabe) ever understood. Thus, the boundary between the classroom and the hallway no longer held him back. He would barge into Nanami's classroom during his free time regardless of whether she had lessons or not.
Unfortunately, to some students who viewed them through rose-tinted glasses, these actions of Hibari were believed to be done out of tough love. A tsundere in CulturedMen™ terms.
As a result, the dating rumors only worsened, which was the opposite of what Nanami was hoping to achieve by avoiding him.
She sighed as she neared the school. It was only morning but she already wanted to go home. What's the point of going to class if she would be forced to spend most of her time escaping her crazed underclassman?
Honestly, it amazed her how he had yet to receive an expulsion notice.
Nervously hiding behind the school gates, Nanami searched for a male student in gakuran and was surprised to see a whole bunch of them gathered in front of the school building. It seemed that the disciplinary committee was conducting a surprise bag inspection.
After scanning the surroundings and confirming that Hibari was nowhere to be found, she continued inside the school grounds.
"Good morning, president." Kusakabe approached her. Behind him were the other committee members who bowed to her in greeting.
"Conducting a bag inspection? How can you all be so hardworking in the morning?" The signature business smile was back on her face. However, beneath her facade, Nanami was itching to rush inside the building before she could run into their boss.
"Ah, yes," answered Kusakabe. "It was the chairman who came up with it."
Crazy. It was undoubtedly crazy how the very same guy who refused to follow the rules was the one enforcing it.
But I guess I'm crazier for giving him the position. Ah, how she desperately wanted to go back in time and slap some sense into herself.
Refusing to give him any form of praise, Nanami only nodded. "Then, I'll be going."
Unfortunately, before she could reach the building, the man she was trying to avoid blocked her way.
"Open your bag," Hibari ordered, sharply glancing at his vice chairman who let Nanami pass without checking her belongings, before proceeding to glare down at the brunette.
She only scoffed at his pitiful excuse of bullying. "I'm the president. I know what I can and cannot bring."
"I'm the disciplinary committee chairman. You will do as I say."
Indeed, in terms of upholding the school rules, Hibari arguably had more authority than her. Clicking her tongue, Nanami reluctantly handed him her bag. She silently watched him search for the contents and a smirk played on her lips when he failed to find anything.
"What? Did you really think I would bring something that is not allowed at school?"
Hibari exhaled derisively. "Hurry up and get going."
Nanami inwardly cackled in victory. While it was true that she did not bring anything that would go against the school rules, the object that previously resided in her bag was not to be witnessed by the public eye. At all costs.
Thus, with quick thinking, the brunette hid it under her blazer, at the waistband of her skirt.
Nanami was about to walk away when someone bumped her shoulder. A flat thud was heard, but it was drowned out by a familiar voice screaming, "My bad, Senritsu! I'm extremely late for morning practice!"
Already used to his antics, Nanami only watched Ryohei disappear. Just as she took a step towards the school building, a hand grabbed her shoulder.
Hibari spoke with sadistic amusement. "I thought you would never bring something banned at school?"
Confused, she looked at him and her eyes nearly popped out their sockets when she found her shoujo manga in his hand! She immediately searched her waist and felt a sense of doom upon not finding it there.
"It fell from your skirt when he bumped into you," he explained.
Hibari then raised the book at eye level to examine the front and the back. His nose immediately scrunched at the illustration of two students having a... display of affection.
"Confiscated. You are to write a reflection paper this afternoon."
"Huh? But bringing this is not against school rules!" Nanami argued as she tried to retrieve it from his hand, only to let out a high shrill when he raised it above his head.
Hibari was practically waving her manga for the world to see! At this rate, everyone would find out that she was an otaku, and that she used fictional stories to fulfill her romantic fantasies!
"You must be blind," he retorted. "The cover obviously implies something malicious."
It's a shoujo manga, what do you expect? Hugs are normal! She wanted to break his leg and make him crouch down but resisted the urge to do so.
An idea crossed her mind. "Fine, I get it! I'll go to detention. So hurry up and hide the damn book!"
Slowly, the resistance of his arm decreased. However, before Nanami could snatch the book away, Hibari had already tossed it to Kusakabe. He scoffed at her predictable actions.
"Detention. After class. If you escape," he glared down at her in warning, "I'll throw that thing in the incinerator."
Later afternoon, they met up inside a vacant classroom.
"I can't believe you're making me do this when I'm already busy," she grunted, taking a seat near the window while the skylark perched himself on the window sill.
"Move your pen, not your mouth."
Nanami rolled her eyes and reluctantly pulled a paper out of her bag.
She soon started writing and the room was filled with silence. Every now and then, voices and footsteps would echo from the corridor. Distant hollers from various sports teams training in the field also graced her ears.
How peaceful. It had been a while since she had a moment to herself. After the dating rumor began, everyone continuously pestered her on her supposed romantic relationship with Hibari. Like, how it felt like to be the Demoness of Namimori, or does Hibari also do the biting thing in bed?
What the hell was all that? Seriously, she pitied whoever would become Hibari's significant other. Imagine getting called a demoness just because your boyfriend was a town-renowned jerk. And, if that biting thing was true, that person ought to buy bandages as early as now!
"You. Focus." Hibari scolded Nanami, effectively taking her out of her reverie.
"Yeah, yeah." She threw him a side glare at him but had to do a double take when she found him leisurely reading her shoujo manga. Nanami couldn't help but smirk. "Oh my, disciplinary committee chairman. Didn't know you were into malicious books too."
"I'm only checking the contents," he said without giving her a glance.
"You seem pretty invested though," she shrugged, before returning her attention to the reflection paper. "Are you enjoying the story?"
He yawned as if to prove his disinterest. "Hardly. Romance is for herbivores."
Herbivores? That again? Nanami failed to hold back a scoff. "What are you saying? Carnivores mate too."
Hibari froze and looked at the brunette. He stared at her for the longest time, confused of what she was getting at.
"That's basic elementary stuff," she added. "All animals mate to avoid extinction."
He closed his eyes in irritation, trying his best not pull out a tonfa and start another needless goose chase with the female ninja who was very good at her job: running away and hiding.
After he willed himself not to smack her head at least once, he spoke through gritted teeth, "I'm not talking about reproduction."
Nanami failed to respond, now fully-focused on her paper. Seeing her do her tasks as told, Hibari decided to let go of the topic, albeit begrudgingly.
Half an hour later, the brunette was finished.
"Done. I hope this satisfies you, committee chairman." For the umpteenth time, Nanami repeated his title — the one which she bestowed upon him, thus effectively shooting herself in the foot — before handing him the paper.
Seeing him distracted, she attempted to retrieve her manga, but Hibari pulled away before she could even lay a finger on it. "I'm still checking your work. Stop acting like a child or I'll bite you to death."
Nanami yielded, more embarrassed than offended by his remark. Not only did he discover her weakness, he also saw how desperate she was to hide it. "Fine. My bad."
Silently, Hibari observed her from the corner of his eye before stepping down the window sill. "Have you finally reflected on your actions?" He gestured the book towards her and Nanami nodded.
"Yes, I'm definitely not bringing a manga to school ever again." Or else my reputation be damned.
She reached for her precious manga but was surprised when Hibari refused to let go.
"I'm not only talking about that," he said as he walked up to her. Confused, all Nanami could do was meet his gaze. The words that followed froze her in place.
"What are you hiding from me?"
