Prologue | Now We Can Proceed

ELLA

"Good evening Granddad, how are you?" I walk over to my grandfather who is sitting behind his huge mahogany desk. He's owned that thing for as long as I can remember. It reminds me of the movie "The Godfather". I expect him to get pissed at my brothers one day and burst out in his best Sicilian to tell them how fucking stupid they all are, but, since they only speak French and Spanish it would not matter if he did.

"I am well Ellie. Is your father with you?" Grand father asks. Granddad is very formal, dialogue is no exception and time is always of the essence. Granddad is looking at his watch.

"No, I thought he would be here already. He was so eager for this meeting I thought he would beat me here." After all, he's the one who called me.

"One would…" The door opens, interrupting my grandfather.

"…think. Yes I know Dad. Good evening Ellie." My father saunters into my grandfather's study and kisses me on the cheek. He's late. Granddad does not do late, ever, and he doesn't forget when someone else is late.

Granddad clears his throat, "Well, now we are all together." He takes a moment to glare at my father. "I have some questions."

"Ella, is she here?" Granddad seems eager to know.

"Yes Granddad, she arrived late last night. He was at the airport to meet her, even ran up the steps to the plane door. I burst out laughing. They look wonderful together. She really does look like me. You cannot tell from the photos, you have to see her in person. The similarity is uncanny."

"Yes, I believe those blue eyes did it to him. Lord knows that is what attracted me to your grandmother." He smiles, as he always does when he remembers my grandmother. She died before I was born, but I've seen numerous photos of her. I wish I could've met her.

"They went back to his place and have not left. He will be at the Committee Meeting tonight though. It is the last meeting before the event. I do not know if she will accompany him or not." For his sake and for her sake I really hope he skips the damn meeting. My brothers behaved so badly at the last meeting. I'll take those fuckers down, in public, if they harass him or her.

"Well, do not expect her and if she does, make sure those imbeciles you so affectionately refer to as brothers leave her the fuck alone. They were not supposed to bother him and look what happened." I nod in agreement.

"Yes, if need be, I will handle them." I look directly at my father. All he does is nod his consent. He knows some of the story. "Like I said, she is here and they look happy, that is what matters. This is a wonderful place for them to reconcile and move forward together. We can only hope for the best. I have not told him." I turn toward my grandfather, "Granddad, I truly believe she should be with him when we speak. She has a soothing affect on him. It really is amazing." I sigh. Looking at the two of them is like watching Cinderella and Prince Charming. I can only wish for that kind of love to find me one day.

"I agree, they should be told together and they should be told here." I do a double take. HERE? Granddad can see my reaction. "I want to be able to show him proof, Little One. He does not appear to be the trusting sort, so I am certain he will want cold, hard facts to back up our claim." I wish this could just be accepted at face value. It's not like we want anything from him, but I know Granddad's right. We have to be able to prove ourselves. "I have all of that." Grandad continues, "My daughter was not in the best way at the end of her life, but she was still my daughter. She knew the importance of documentation and she knew her son would one day need to know. I have all of the proof." My grandfather, or my father, somehow managed to maintain evidence I never knew it was possible or reasonable, to have about my aunt and her son. They really outdid themselves. Granddad wouldn't shun her or destroy any evidence of her existence in our family, nor of her son's relationship with anyone close to her because he recognized others would want to see it and verify who she really was.

It's with grave finality my grandfather states, "He must know his position and he must know his entitlement. If he wants to denounce the Brown family, he has the right to do so. However, all of my grandsons will have been told the truth. Ella, you will be responsible for following through with my wishes when the time comes." I furrow my brow. Granddad softens his feathers before telling me, "Little One, I know you had your heart set on the sea, but you will step up at EB and you will ensure he does the same or I WILL haunt you ALL for the remainder of your lives, including your cousin." He gives me a devilish grin then kisses my forehead, to soften the blow I think. Granddad's always promising to haunt someone when he wants his way. The problem is, I believe him, which is why it's so effective when he says it to me. I swallow hard and nod slowly.

"Emmett, what about The Interference? What is its status?" My grandfather cannot wait to be rid of "that" and quite frankly neither can we.

My father's blue eyes flash with anger, as he growls, "No change in position Dad and no change in status either."

My eyes widen and I gasp, "What? You mean STILL? It has to stop." I look frantically at my grandfather. "Granddad, is there anything we can do right away? Anything at all?"

Granddad shakes his head regretfully. "No luv, we cannot, but in time. 'The Interference' will be gone…for good."

AN: Hello. I'm back. I'll be editing and/or re-writing some chapters before adding new ones. You may or may not want to re-read a chapter. If you chose to do so, don't be upset because there was no change. If you chose not to do so, don't be upset if you can't follow the storyline.

Laters.
