Chapter Two
Hughes decided to split with Andy this time and when she saw that Andy was moving slowly she moved over to shake her. "Yo. Herrera. You okay?"
Andy, refusing to look weak, just nodded her head and motioned for them to continue the sweep. As they moved up the first set of stairs to the second floor Andy started to feel light-headed and her breathing became shallow and short. She tried to call out for Vic but before she could a piece of the roof collapsed and landed on her.
Vic hearing the noise, turned around and saw her friend buried underneath the rumble. "ANDY!"
"Mayday! Mayday! Firefighter down." Vic cried over the radio. "I need a Rapid Intervention Team!" Vic gets off the radio and focuses on Andy. "Andy, Andy." Vic works to get some of the debris off of Andy. "Please answer me, Andy." Vic started to uncover some of Andy, her arm first and notices that it's at a weird angle. Vic tried to lift another piece off but it was too heavy, Vic was about to radio asking where her backup is when she hears running.
"Vic, who's down?" Maya asked, not being able to tell since Andy's back and her head still had a piece of roof covering her.
"It's Andy," Vic said carefully, seeing Robert come in.
"Excuse me?" Robert was shocked. "What do you mean it's Andy?" Robert asked, expression hardening, worried for his wife.
"Robert, I'm so sorry," Vic told him, trying to keep her tears in.
Robert just shakes his head. "Come on, let's get this ruble off of her."
19 and Ruiz get to work on getting Andy out. About five minutes later they have the bigger pieces off of her, her last name on her turnout now visible.
"Alright. Let's turn her over." Robert gave instructions. "Bishop and Ruiz go and get a stretcher. Hughes and I will work on turning her over."
"Shouldn't you wait to do that until we have a backboard?" Vic asked.
"We brought one in when you said that there was a firefighter down," Maya told her and then rushed out of the house to get the gurney.
Robert sets the backboard near Andy and gets it in place before Vic, Travis and he works to turn her over and when they do they all gasp. Andy had a large gash on her forehead, blood was running down the right side of her face. Robert tries to hold his tears back but a couple escape as he reaches a hand to put fingers on the pulse point on her neck and lets out a small sob when he feels a faint pulse.
"Thank god." he breathes out. They work to get Andy on the backboard and lift her onto the gurney when Maya and Theo come in. "Come on. We gotta get her house before any more of it house gives in." Robert said and they clip her in and rush out of the house.
When they get out of the house Robert and Vic rush to the Aid Car and load Andy in.
"Robert and I are coming in the ambo," Vic tells the group.
"Warren, your my med group. Go with them. They aren't in the right head space to be working on her right now." Warren nods at what Beckett said and rushes into the back of the ambo and gets Andy hooked on the heart monitor while Maya gets in the front and starts the drive to Grey-Sloan.
Warren gets her hooked up and is glad to see that, despite the head injury, her heart rate is more stable than he thought it would be. Ben looked up at Vic and Robert and saw them looking at Andy, tears in their eyes.
"Hey, She's going to be okay guys," Warren said, trying to lift their spirits.
"She never should have been in the house. It was clear. We got the five family members out." Vic said aloud, pissed off.
"Beckett was the cause of this." Robert was also pissed off. "Ben?"
Ben looked up at Robert. "Yeah?"
"Are there any other injuries besides her head and arm?" Robert asked, worry oozing out of him.
"Well, her heart rate is stable and I don't think it would be if there was internal bleeding so I think she's safe there." Ben hears Robert exhale. "Her arm, I can tell it's broken so it'll need to be in a cast for a while."
"What about her head?"
"That's what I'm worried about. The wound hasn't stopped bleeding yet, so a clear indicator that it'll need stitches." Ben told him, pausing for a moment. "I'm also worried that she hasn't even stirred a little."
"Meaning?" Vic asked, scared of the answer.
"I just think that it could be a grade-three concussion." Ben hears Vic's breath hitch. "I'm just making assumptions right now, guys. Wait until we get to the hospital." They both nod and just stare at Andy.
It takes another two minutes for them to get to Grey-Sloan and when they do they are met by Dr. Grey, Dr. Shepherd and two residents.
"What do we have?" Meredith asked.
"30 year old female. The roof collapsed on her. Hasn't woken up yet, stats have stayed decent. BP is good. It's just her head wound that hasn't stopped bleeding and her arm that is concerning." Ben tells them.
"Oh, my god. Herrera." Meredith said, shocked to see her friend like this. "Let's get her into trauma two. Amelia, check over her head and then we'll look at that broken arm."
Amelia cleaned all the dirt off Andy's face, cleaned the cut and started to stitch it up when the bleeding finally began to stop. "After you set her broken arm in a cast I want to get an MRI of her head. I want to make sure her skull isn't cracked or anything worse." Amelia told Meredith and the residents.
"Amelia, do you mind getting Link for me? I think he's in today and since setting broken bones is more his thing than mine I'd prefer he does this." Meredith asked.
"Sure, just let me wrap the wound and I'll go page him," Amelia told Meredith, grabbing some gauze to wrap around Andy's head. "All done," Amelia told them a few minutes later. "Do you want me to let Robert in?"
"Sure. Tell him he needs to stay out of the way though." Meredith told her.
Amelia nods and leaves the room. Meredith tells the residents they can clear out and she looks at Andy. "Oh, Herrera."
Not even a minute later Meredith is joined in the room by Robert.
"How's she doing? Is she going to be okay? How bad is her concussion? Has she woken up at all yet?" Robert was turning red in the face from all the questions.
"Whoa. whoa, Robert." Meredith tries to calm him down. "She's doing okay. She is going to be okay, we're going to double-check that by taking her for an MRI after we get her in a cast. And no, she hasn't woken up." Meredith told Robert.
Robert sighed. "Should it be taking her this long to wake up?"
"Until we get the results from the MRI it's hard to say." Meredith started. "Right now she's stable, she's on an IV and morphine so the morphine is probably taking effect."
Robert just nods and before he can speak, Link walks into the room.
"Hey Mer, Robert." Link walked into the room, put the cast supplies on a tray and began to clean Andy's broken arm. He places a liner of soft material around her arm and begins to put the rest of the cast on. Robert was sitting on the other side of the bed, holding Andy's free hand while Meredith had gone to check on some other patients. After nearly half an hour the cast was dry and set and Link left Robert to be alone with his wife after packing up all the supplies he had brought in.
"Andy, baby. Please wake up. Please." Robert begged. "I can't go through losing another wife," he said to himself, bowing his head.
"You won't have to." Robert heard from the bed and shot his head up.
"Andy, oh, my god." Robert let out a breath, "I was so worried you wouldn't wake up."
"Well, I'm awake." Andy smiles for a couple of seconds. "I remember everything that happened," Andy told him.
"You remember?"
"Yeah. I remember the primary check, getting the kids out and then being told to go back in by Beckett." Andy tenses. "The roof collapsing on me." Andy looks down at her arm. "I'm guessing it's broken?" Andy asked.
"It is," Robert told her. "Link said it would take 4-6 weeks to heal." Andy groans. "I know, I know. It sucks. I'm sorry, babe." Robert leaned over to give her a kiss on the top of her head. "Amelia just needs to do an MRI to make sure your skull isn't cracked or anything but they also think you may have a grade 3 concussion."
"Ugh," Andy groans.
"Hey, Andy!" Amelia's voice filled the room. "Glad to see you awake."
"Hey, Amelia," Andy responded. "So, Robert told me you need to do an MRI and then depending on what you see I can go home tomorrow?" Andy asked, hopeful.
"Yeah, I'll take you down to do an MRI right now." Amelia smiled. "We also need to wait for the results from your blood work too."
"Bloodwork?" Robert interrupted. "When was blood taken?"
"When she first got into the ER," Meredith told him walking into the room. "Sorry, I overheard the conversation."
"Mer!" Andy exclaimed. "You were in the ER when I was brought in?"
"Yup. I was going to do your cast when I thought Link should since that's his specialty." Meredith told her.
"So how long will the blood work test results take?" Andy asked, yawning.
"Shouldn't take too much longer. I got the lab to rush the results." Meredith told her.
Andy nodded and leaned back into the pillow, suddenly feeling exhausted.
"Alright, let's take you for that MRI before you pass out on us." Amelia joked.
"Okay," Andy said, sighing. Robert kisses the top of her head and helps her into a wheelchair. "Love you."
"I love you too, Ans," Robert responded, watching her get pushed out of the room by Amelia.
Robert sat back down in the chair he was in before and sighed. He and Meredith were the only two left in the room.
"Robert, I'm sure it's just a concussion. I'm-" Meredith was about to continue when there was a knock at the door.
"Carina? What's up?" Meredith asked, confused.
"I was given Andy's bloodwork from a resident," Carina said nervously.
Robert picked up on her nervousness. "Carina? What is it?"
"I think we should wait until Andy comes back," Carina said, sniffling.
Robert and Meredith look at each other, both wondering what could be so bad that it has Carina sniffling.
The trio stood and sat in silence, lost in their thoughts until they heard laughter coming closer.
Amelia and Andy come into the room and when they see all the grim faces the smiles they were wearing dropped.
"What's going on?" Amelia is the first of the two to find her voice.
Robert gets off the chair and moves to Andy's wheelchair and puts his hands on her shoulders, trying to give her some comfort.
Carina took a deep breath. "This isn't my job so Dr. Shepherd, I'll let you read this." Carina handed the file to Amelia and walked near Andy.
Amelia looked over the file and her passive facial expression turned to shock. "Oh, my god."
"Can someone tell me what the heck is going on?" Andy asked, starting to panic.
"Andy, these results show that you have leukemia." Amelia watches Andy's face fall and her eyes tear up. "I'm so sorry, Andy."
