Chapter 2: The Prince's Son

As the morning sun came through the windows of the modest family home bought by Conglomerate Cash, Oguma awoke from his sleep looking at the sky light that allowed sun light to shine directly at him. He propped himself up in a pudgy manner, his little arms only allowing him so much support to finally be able to look around his room. He sat in his crib, looking around the blue and white room, peeking past the wooden beams of said crib.

He saw his toys on the ground, having gotten them for his birthday a few sleeps back. His child self didn't have much a concept of time, yet he knew that those toys were his. There was no other one but him and his parents allowed to play with them. When the weird wolf had picked them he had gotten cranky and held onto the toy until the wolf let go, having a for a child indecipherable emotion on his face.

He looked at the door and saw that it was closed, the blue door hiding the hallway outside from where he could see his mother walk around. And with him wanting the door open and to see his mother he collected the little ability of thinking he had amassed through his life and opened his mouth.

"mama" came in a plain tone out of his mouth, nearly giggling after saying the word. He couldn't wait to see her face, his favorite parent. With daddy being out of the his little universe which was the rooms in the house he had already seen he knew that mother was his favorite parent. She always smelled wonderful and had the most soothing of voices. In awaiting he continued to look at the door.

After a little while of mother still being gone and the door being closed Oguma restarted his attempt of making his presence known.

"mama" again in the same tone he spoke the word, looking at his door expectantly. This time he finally heard footsteps, his face turning into a childish smile before the door even opened.

"You slept Good Oggie?" Mother greeted him, his arms already outstretched at her white fur.

"mama mama mama." He repeated the only word he had managed to speak so far to express his love and need for attention at the same time. He felt her hands grab his sides, him being still small enough to be carried by her, something that would surely soon change knowing how large he already was. In one year he had nearly grown to the size of a normal deer fawn, not that he didn't look the part. He looked like a fawn with Light hazel fur, a smaller snout and longer ears that had a larger range of motion.

And to his liking as he snuggled himself closer to her as much as his little arms let him, his longer ears allowed for him to hear her soft and steady heartbeat, nearly lulling him back to sleep if he wasn't full of energy to start the new day and perhaps spend more time in the living room to find out just how much strength he had in his arms and legs.

But instead of mother walking into the living room she crossed across to the office and stood in the door, Oguma attentively looking at the room.

"I'm still not done cooking, can you hold him for a while." Said his mother, Oguma looking at his father sitting at his desk. And when father and son looked at each other Louis face broke into a smile and stood up towards him.

"Of course darling." Louis grabbed his son from his wife's arms, Oguma the second looking at his father attentively, not sure if to smile or just to marvel. His eyes fixated on the large pointy branches growing from father's head.

"You'll grow one of these as well when you're old enough." Louis held Oguma above his head, allowing his son to grab onto his antlers and giggle with fascination. After a few seconds he lowered him again to his chest and walked towards the living room, Oguma decided that daddy was a fine playmate as well, giggling to himself.

Louis placed his son in an upright position on the play mate in the middle of the living room, sitting down, grabbing some of the toys which Oguma watched attentively.

"You want to play huh?"

His son answered with a babbling sound as he grasped air beckoning for the toy.

"Mr teddy loves you!" The deer got into a playful voice as he impersonated the plushie his son was after, and let it dance on his legs.

The next hour or two was spent between Haru and Louis exchanging their position of watching their 'fit' as Bill had so aptly called Oguma the second's fawn kit stage. After a while of the cycle taking it turns and Oguma receiving his first meal of the deal the hybrid infant's eyes started to fall close and his father picked him up and brought him to his room. After placing him in his bed and making sure he was comfortable with his favorite plushie and under his little blanket. He kissed him on the cheek, careful to position his head in a way to leave space for his antlers.

He left the door open a small part and left for the living room where his wife was now laying on the couch. As he sat down she lifted her legs allowing him to sit down, and then let her feet drop into his lap. Without any instruction Louis began massaging her feet, like he always did after a busy day.

"mmmh…" she murred, her eyes closed as she laid there in relative bliss. Haru was always the one dealing with chores while Louis kept on writing speeches, sending emails and other political work.

"And how had my prince spent his day?" Louis smiled at her comment.

"Wrote more scripts, more foot notes and managed the construction on the horn conglomerate manor."

"going good?" His wife asked and Louis hummed almost in reply.

"The neighbors don't enjoy the influx of people depending on welfare walking past their estates, so i'm not being very neighborly, but… In what I am trying to achieve it's going quite good."

"That sounds good." They kept on in the cycle until Haru sat up, now both sitting beside each other. It was a mild summers day and the light from the afternoon sun gave enough light for their living room.

"Any news on the Conference, Yahya showed up yet?"

"No he hasn't." Louis pursed his lips for a second and then sighed.

"He can't hide forever." Louis didn't laugh at his wife's comment this time. It was worrying how the Sublime Beastar had not yet gone to a single conference since Louis started campaigning. Louis read the new legislature changes Yahya had sent out to the mostly herbivore committees, having an in with them simply by shared species. He also read the changing Police directives, coming from Police Chief Max who was of course was real close with the Sublime Beastar.

"I think he might be able to and without even lifting a finger still keep the public on his good side… we've had the same Sublime Beastar for what, 26 years now?… I don't think the public really understands just how problematic Yahya's views are, even if then chances are they agree."

Louis ended the statement at looked at his wife. In Yahya's eyes even the fact that his wife was not a red deer would make him furious and declare them both savages. Then he thought of his son, the little hazel fit that probably slept peacefully just right this minute.

"If he wins the next election life for Hybrids will be all but impossible."

"You'll win I know that for sure." Haru laid her hand on his, and for a second time in his life Louis took comfort in a lie not for reasons of his own sanity but in order to uphold the one of his partner. He was terrified of what the country would turn into if Yahya manged to do just what the laws he wanted to push through legislation were actual plans.

"I will have to Haru, otherwise I don't know what will happen."

Louis looked at the play mat on the floor and prayed to Rex that he wouldn't have to spend his entire marriage through comfortable lies for her and their son, he wouldn't have the strength to do so even if he wanted to.

When the sun had fully set, and the twilight had passed to be nothing more than a smidge of lighter blue on the lower canvas that was the horizon, the part of the city hidden behind walls began to really pump into gear.

In the safety of the dark the black market dwellers left their homes, moving never in pairs but singular spaced apart on the walk ways even when traveling together, and immediately dispersing at the smallest hint of a police car or a street watching stopping for more than two steps. They walked as if they were followed, checking behind themselves and always keeping a keen eye to the surroundings.

It was the code upkept by everyone going out in the night to buy either a late night snack or their weekly grocery shopping. All except for those that didn't want to buy anything at all.

Their clothes were unkempt, they reeked of meat and they had a funny quality to their steps. They either had a drunken sway to their step or a concentrated step with sunken posture, almost always drooling.

They came to steal the scraps, beg on the streets or just rob the stores themselves. This had become severely difficult over the last few months however as a new Ground keeper had made his presence known on Black market grounds. One that in comparison to the old Doctor held a youthful vigor and deadly tenacity within his temples.

And so as the first group of Subjects in the dim lighting of street lights hushed past into the next alley, they already began to feel watched. A young Golden retriever peeked past the corner, his fur a disheveled mess, his clothing dirty and neglected and his claws sharp and ready for a feast made his way past the concrete and brick walls headed for a meat freezer in the central allyway junction between two market strips.

He hid in the shadows and kneeled down next a dumpster, patiently awaiting the perfect opportunity for a new dose of meat. Drool fell to the floor, the dog not caring in the slightest. His eyes were sleepless and crazed, holding the big metal door in the back at the center of his concentration.

He waited so in the perpetual state of stand by for nearly half an hour until he first saw the door move and heard the creak after. He felt his blood pressure rise, his pupils dilating to nearly the size of a penny. With his fur stood up right, a low growl in his throat and the energy to rip apart whatever would stand in his way the dog sprinted forward toward the door, past the dumpster feeling the cool night air brush against his body.

As he passed the first building seeing the employee of the freezer, an african wild dog of average build he felt the first doubt in his mind start as he slowed down. Why was the employee looking at him like that? However it was not enough to fully deter his want for meat so he remained in a solid run. The Rubber coated fist from behind the wall came as a moderate surprise.

The dog tried to duck as much as he could, the fist however course correcting directly into his face as his head flew to the floor and his body slid against whatever creature stood in his path. He had no time to think about his next move as a fist grabbed his collar, a decidedly real fist as he found the rubber coat metal appendage to be everything but real. And as the realization of the metal appendage came to mind, connecting the dots, so did the rubber coated fist connect to his face.

There were two clean hits and the dog went limp against Bill's grip, his shirt straining against the weight of the dead weight golden retriever.

"Thanks." Said Bill to the employee, a seasoned Night shift worker.

"You keep the streets clean." The man remarked and grabbed whatever he was supposed to deliver. Bill looked forwards, seeing a few more figures pile in the shadows. He dropped the retriever, who fell with a soft thump just a few centimeters to the floor. He steadied his metal fist and walked into alley way, simply standing in their way.

The shadows began to retreat, finding the meat not being worth a fight with the black markets defender. In rapid succession three sounds of something akin to a bullet soaring through the air. The shadows yelped in fear and ran for whatever ally they saw first. Bill turned around and loaded the dead weight dog onto his shoulder, patting him on the back.

"We'll fix you up real nicely." Bill commented and followed the three meat crazies down into the ally, finding all three plummeted to the ground, blow darts sticking in ones neck and the two others backs.

He looked up from the three dreamless sleepers to see Doctor Gouhin reload his gun.

"First four down to count and inventory, then back to patrolling."

"Yes Gouhin." Bill replied to the statement and loaded the next one on to his shoulders, walking towards the clinic where these three would spend the next few days.

By early dawn at around five in the morning Bill took a drink of tea outside and took a walk in the yard outside of the clinic. Awaiting the third member of the night watch crew, being not disappointed when soon the rattling slither followed.

"Smugglers on the south side have retreated after pressure from the Okamigumi, Two possible meat-crazed carnivores entered the north gate, watched freezer employees supply a few of the stands, and then promptly left, will continue to monitor next night." The winding pile of muscle and scale held curled at the bottom of their tail a clipboard which she brought forward for Bill to Grab.

"Due warning that some Police inspection is coming up Rokume, so better be careful when using the drain or ventilation system, they are becoming pretty thorough." Bill explained to her as he looked over the clipboard which had been methodically filled out with information in beautiful wavy writings.

"That's all for tonight's count, See you next night Rokume." The bronze snake's tail rattled at Bill's comment, the reptilian sigh setting in.

"Warmly appreciated, Boss" The S was drawn out in the sigh like hissing of the tongue.

Bill waved at her and the went back into the clinic. He left his mug in the sink and grabbed his keys from the board. Gouhin had already gone to bed so there was no one waiting for him. He locked the door behind him and made his way through the city to his apartment.

Life was funny in a way where one day a local legend would ask you for help on an impossible task, then after you, by some stroke of luck, manage to beat it asks you for a position under your employment.

He walked past the city streets, nocturnals walking or taking the city train to make their way home. He saw the light blue's turn brighter as the Summer sun began rising on the horizon. He stood in the middle of the City's Plaza, looking between the Metal and glass Giants lining the inner city. He bathed in the beauty of the sun as he watched it bathe everything in orange light and then went on his walk without a care in the world.

He arrived at his apartment at precisely 5:45 in the morning. He took off his coat and placed it in the wardrobe and promptly began to sneak his way into the kitchen where he prepared breakfast for himself and Ellen, still fast asleep in bed.

He prepared egg, rice for the two and shrimp to be added to his meal. He enjoyed cooking after being done with work, it was the easiest and most rewarding of his daily responsibilities. After finishing he poured himself tea and sat down at the table, enjoying the quiet morning hours as the dim lighting of the apartment slowly grew brighter in ten-minute intervals.

After he finished to check the clock, stating it was now 6:15 he moved for the bedroom. As he pushed open the door a flash of black and white in front of his vision. Her hands grabbed his shoulders, pulling him into the room. Her face lounged for his her lips denying him the ability to speak as they sunk to bed, the Tiger having no chance to react in any other way than to give into the playful attack.

Her legs hooked around his hips, her hands grabbing onto the fur on his back. He was entombed in a passionate embrace, laying on the bed. And as she so openly requested, so did he happily oblige.

After they were done, Bill barely breaking a sweat due to his toned physique it left Ellen in pleasure ridden paralysis. She did so often, a wake-up work out as she called it, ambushing him after coming home.

They followed the obvious routine afterward, her showering first, both then eating breakfast and him showering after she left. Their apartment wasn't much, but it was enough for them. They had their routines, their order, their fun playful times and their intimacy.

It let him work, let her study. Bill was nothing if not pragmatic in the time after Riz had passed. That was made most sense, after all, his responsibilities had grown beyond his class room to an entire hidden district of the city.

When he finally laid down to bed, black out sheets denying Sunlight entry into his home, he felt calm and satisfied with tonight.

Hours passed, Bill slept and recharged his bodily battery. At around five in the afternoon his alarm rang.

He sat up and began the routine for this specific night, dinner at Louis's and Haru's lovely little place in the suburbs of the western party of the town. Bill had to say that he adored their child, the little Fit having such a boisterous character even at such a young age. He liked how Oguma enjoyed it when he was raised higher than every head in the room, laughing and giggling like he was the king of all creation.

He picked out his favorite perfume and favorite shirt, making sure to look good for his friends.

"Hi Bill." She opened the door behind him, carrying grocery bags into the kitchen.

"Hi El." He followed behind her, his smell passing over her as he tended to the groceries.

"mmmh, you smell good… When's the last time we've went on a date?" She snuggled up to his back, her hand enclosing around his midsection. He held onto her hands and just stood for a second, thinking about what she said.

"Tonight is group night… i'll take you out somewhere nice soon, just the job's killing me El."

"Where will you take me." She asked with a sultry undertone, completely ignoring him saying how busy he was. They had that conversation too often.

"Some place nice… with a dress code… Viper?"

"That's more nightclub than restaurant." She answered, knowing just what happened behind the scenes after hours in the basement hall of that place. Bill smiled.

"Since when are you aversed to a night club?" He asked still standing with her on his back, though she broke the contact now.

"Going there every few months loses the novelty. If I wanted to go clubbing I would ask for a club, if I want a date then I ask for a date." She sat down at the table, looking saddened. Bill understood why the second she broke the hug.

He turned around to look at her, leaning against the kitchen's working top.

"Mmmh… Barcadia?" She wore a look now that was not only unimpressed but also starting to become angry

"Are you mocking me on purpose now?"

"Lighthouse?" He saw her features tense up further and then relax again. Sadness returned to haunt her features.

"Can you promise me that we'll actually do it? Go to lighthouse, just the two of us?" He approached her, the words stinging. His work had become such a constant that it nearly smothered all of their free time. He gently grabbed for her shoulder with his prosthetic arm, he didn't need a sense of touch to know that her shoulder was tense. He dropped down to his knees, his other hand gliding over to her face. With a smooth caress they locked gazes.

"I promise you, that we will go to Lighthouse, no matter what needs to be done for me to take a day off." He felt her eyes go over him and see the shame that he had wore openly now, having nothing truly left to the hide.

"I hope so." She gave him a small kiss and got up from the table, leaving for the bedroom. Bill stood up, now alone. Maybe Gouhin was right, the black market work takes you fully, not leaving a single shred of you elsewhere.

Bill and Ellen walked hand in hand to the EL train station, their fighting taking some energy but never enough to actually sever them from each other. Bill was the one who felt awful afterwards, normally residing himself to work in a gloomy mood in order to concentrate on the things which he could praise himself for.

However the train ride was filled with thoughts of disappointment and not being there for the person that he should be most there for. The position of Black market Grounds keeper was a life time job, and Bill had been young enough to bullshit himself into thinking that by some miracle he would able to be someone that was perhaps mighty enough to beat the damn job into submission. But he just about had done enough lying to himself that it was inevitable to admit that he was in over his head and needed a break.

Meat Craze doesn't sleep, it waits for the moment you grow tired and loose focus for just one moment. Gouhin's words echoed through his head and he knew he was stuck between responsibility and common life. One would need to take the upper hand, and Bill wasn't sure which one that would be. We need more employees, this is no three-man job.

They arrived at the outer parts of the inner city, leaving the EL train to walk the rest of the way. Ellen didn't say much, nor did she have to. The thing in Bill's mind was already tearing through his mind, yet he braved through it not only for his girlfriend but also for his pack. A bond that he would probably never in his life forget.

They reached their home while the Sun was still a bit over the horizon, giving the sky an orange hue. They were welcomed by Louis and Haru, both happy to have dinner after such stressful times. Louis had gone into politics about as determined as Bill had picked up the reigns over the Clinic in the Back alley.

It didn't take long for Legosi and Juno to arrive soon, Pina arriving last as a single-man team. It was a bit humorous to Bill that the womanizier of the group had become the only one to spend his life as a single man by choice, not because he was going through One night stand after One night stand, it was him deciding the find himself before he indulged in the dating scene again.

The dinner was a modest meal that taste like home to Bill. Something that reminded him of the simpler days before his life turned into the turbulent hell that his life became since his 18th birthday.

At last he was glad that everyone was ok, of all the things after Riz's reign of terror that was the thing he allowed himself to ask for.

After dinner, Haru checked again on Oguma, making sure her son was asleep. The group's then split into the women sitting in the living room while the men excused themselves to a little break for fresh air outside. For all the things they shared together that was the one moment where they decided to be in their separate groups.

"We're doing great i'd say. We're concentrating on our University Courses, I think Juno is planning to go into Education… I'm not sure about my choice yet but I think I might just go into police work. Helping is kind of my thing." Explained Legosi, his notion of becoming an officer gaining a few chuckles from both Bill and Pina.

"Aren't you a little too naive for Police work?" Bill commented and then took a swig of the beer can in his hand.

"Detective Legosi on the hunt for the milk carton, that's an article I would read." Pina's joke made Bill laugh, the sheep laughing to himself. Louis remained quiet.

"I think it's a great idea Legosi, you'd keep people safe. There's not enough people who do that."

"Of course it's Louis Applauding the wolf… you know I still don't understand how you managed to turn into the biggest carnivore sympathizer there is." Bill laughed to himself and suddenly the terrace got quiet. What he said was not fair, and neither was it incorrect. It was an actual question that Bill asked himself, which gave off those sincere tones in the question of questioning Louis's truthfulness. It was enough spite to sound mean spirited, and Bill's felt an ice cold feeling run through him.

"I'm sorry, it was meant to be a joke."

"I'm a carnivore sympathizer for the same reason why we are friends, the same reason why you just excused yourself. Because of fear mongering and parents teaching their kids to stay seperate from each other, one side because they are afraid of loosing their kids, the other scared of their kid coming home in handcuffs, spending their lives in prison before it even started." Louis looked off into the night, peeking at the moon as the sun light dimmed out to just a faint yellow hue behind them.

"Mistakes happen, no need to feel bad." Legosi started, however Louis intervened.

"Next time think about what you're implying." Louis said, neither cold or warm, just matter of fact. And that conflict was over. Bill had a hard time dealing with the fact that Louis had changed as much as he had, and Louis had to fight the high nosed nature Oguma Senior had imprinted in him all his life.

And yet they still were friends no matter how they looked at it.

"To change the subject, how is your campaign going." Legosi asked out of curiosity, this time Bill not being sure if the wolf was uncomfortable or if he truly wanted to know.

"Well… Yahya has yet to show up to give any Political Discourse. So I have been mostly playing preacher to the people, some listening, some not. I really don't know how well I'm doing, but at least I am trying. If Yahya wins i'm not sure how well it's gonna look for hybrids…" Everyone knew he was talking about his son, although the fight he was fighting did not stem from a selfish need for family safety. The idea stemmed from Riz's death, putting the Beastars title to good use.

"I think he's too comfortable to show up." said Pina. "He's probably still brooding in his sky scraper, so when he finally shows up you know that he thinks he got something to loose."

"Not really a calming thought." Louis spoke under his breath.

"At least a thought at all. You're fighting already. None of us share that achievement." Louis looked at Pina and smiled.

"Thanks…"

"I think I can get you more info." All head's turned to the wolf, a letter in his hand.

"It's a recruitment letter for some… project? He's asking for an interview in his office next week." The group looked at the wolf intently, a mixture of curiosity, interest and worry.

"We all know the Beastar is not the kind person to just give out scholarships… i'm not buying this…" Pina looked worried, something inherently uncharacteristic and alien for him.

"To pure-blooded folks sure, just not to hybrids. Anything for his clean little world." Bill explained drinking more of his beer.

"I'm not pure-blooded."

"Perhaps a failure of bureaucracy. I think he's picking you for your Beastar potential, not because of your genetic make-up."

The group sat in silence as they all thought about how to react to this weird letter making it's way into their lives. The big question being if this was an opportunity or a trap.

"I think you should do it…" Louis said after careful considerate silence for the last few minutes.

"Are you sure? I'm not the best actor-" Bill burst out laughing.

"You may have trouble lying, be naive and sometimes a little nervous… but you are an actor. Three out of four people here have seen that with their own eyes. This is the opportunity of a life time."

Legosi still looked at Louis.

"Are you sure I should do this? Just to see what he's planning perhaps?"

Louis looked at the wolf and then at the letter. He switched between points of focus for a while until looking off into space, his lips pursed. They locked eyes again.

"You said you wanted to change the world for the better, didn't you?"

"Yeah…"

"Then this is your chance."
