"Hugo, you go next, " instructed Harry.
So, Hugo prowled around under the tree and dug out rectangular gifts wrapped in wrapping paper with alternating rectangles of red and green. These gifts also had bows and to/from tags that were half red and half green.
""My gift to everyone, " explained Hugo, "Is meant to bring our circle into the modern era."
So, everyone ripped off the wrapping paper from the presents Hugo had just given them.
Once everyone had opened Hugo's present, he or she found himself or herself holding aa ten pack of pens.
"Pens are much easier to work with, " explained Hugo, "Remember that mom is muggleborn. I've seen mom use pens at home, and they seem so much easier to control than quills."
"For this reason, " explained Hermione, "Pens deliver better quality and easier to read writing than Quills."
"And they're more modern, " said Hugo bluntly, "The Wizarding World needs to catch up with the times."
"I've heard of pens before, " said Lily clearly, "And I always intuitively thought they were better than quills. Unfortunately, the Wizarding World has resisted switching from quills to pens because pens are a muggle invention."
"You'll all notice a pleasant difference right away when you first use the pens, " Hermione promised.
"Take mom's word for that, " confirmed Hugo, "I've used pens before, and they are both more comfortable and more effective to use than quills."
Everyone smiled, knowing by feel this would prove to be true.
"We can't and shouldn't be stuck in the past forevermore, " said James firmly, "I applaud Hugo for giving us a kept that will bring us up to modern times."
"Easy for me to say as a muggleborn, but who cares if pens are a muggle invention, " said Samantha clearly, "I mean, if they're a better product, they're a better product."
That's the attitude all witches and wizards should have, " said Ainsley fiercely, "But with bigoted pure blood supremists in existence, that's not always the case."
"We don't have any such people in this house, " said Harry matter of factly.
"As a muggleborn myself, " piped up Gordon, "There are definitely cases where muggle products exceed their magical counterparts, and this is one such case. I've always accepted that Quills are used in the Wizarding World. Maybe I should have questioned it more as pens are well-"
"Obviously superior to quills, " finished Samantha, "I too had just accepted that we use pens in the muggle world and quills in the Wizarding World. Hugo's gift has awoken my mind to the prospect of using muggle products in the Wizarding World."
"That's exactly my aim with this gift, " said Hugo proudly, "Make the muggleborns realize that good muggle products can be brought over to the Wizarding World while introducing people who did grow up in magical families to positive alternative products. If muggle inventions are good, don't shy away from them. Not to mention using pens instead of quills will bring our circle up to modern times.
And with that, everybody smiled.
