Chapter 2: Thermometer: Isobel and Jubal
Walking down the hallway to the JOC, Isobel was updating ADIC Reynolds about the case. "The analysts are scrubbing the video feed to follow the suspects' movements."
"Okay." The ADIC nodded in understanding then added, "By the way, how's Jubal?"
She was caught off guard with the ADIC's concern but recovered quickly. "He's alright, just needed to rest and feel better."
"It really is the flu season," he said, shaking his head. "Alright, just keep me updated about the case."
"Yes, sir," she replied and walked into the JOC. She shouldn't have been surprised when the ASAC texted her that morning that he's sick with fever and can't come to the office. Jubal told her that Abby showed up last weekend with the sniffles.
She texted back, "Of course but I need an update on your condition every two hours." It's what he asked her when she had COVID.
"Haha, yes mam" was his reply followed by a thermometer emoji and his current temperature.
Isobel passed by the breakroom when she heard Kelly said, "Get well soon, boss!" followed by an unmistakable chuckle. She peeked into the room and found the analysts huddled over Elise holding out her phone. Each of them clutching their chosen lunch for the day. The boys turned quiet when they saw her but Elise said, "Oh wait, here's Isobel." She then hurried over and gave her the phone. Sure enough, there was her ASAC in the video call.
"Hey Isobel" he greeted with a smile.
She tried to hide her pleasure in seeing him by chastising him instead. "What are you doing up? You're supposed to be resting."
He chuckled. "My back would have bed sores by now if I stayed any longer. So I decided to take my lunch in the living room. The porridge was delicious by the way."
"It was recommended by Elise."
"Thank you Elise," he said as Isobel turned the phone to the analysts.
"You're welcome," replied Elise.
When Isobel turned the phone back to her, Jubal laughed when he saw her frowning. "And of course, thank you for ordering and having it delivered here."
"Well, you're welcome," she said with a smug smile. "You should rest now, okay?"
"Have you eaten lunch yet?" he asked. She diverted her gaze, not even noticing that it was around lunchtime when she passed by the breakroom. "Isobel, you should also take care of yourself."
"My usual lunch buddy wasn't here so I forgot," she mumbled.
Jubal smiled. "I could return the favor and order something for you."
"Don't worry about me, just focus on getting better. I'll see you later." And before he could protest, Isobel returned the phone to Elise.
After the case, Isobel kept her promise and went to visit Jubal.
"You shouldn't have come. I'm fine," he said as he opened the door.
As she entered his apartment, she could see that he's been staying in the couch because of the blankets and pillows. On the center table were a few medicines, a couple of thermometers and a box of tissue.
She glanced up and saw something out of place. "Is that a mistletoe?"
"Yeah, Abby asked me to hang it." He shrugged, "Her attempt to help me in my lovelife."
She blushed. "That's sweet but who is that for if it's here inside?"
"Maybe someone who would still be willing to visit even if I'm sick," he whispered.
"Too bad you can't get that kiss because you're sick," she responded, clearly heard what he said.
Jubal beamed, "I'll hold you to that."
"Sure, so you better get well soon Agent Valentine," she said with a wink.
