[Nature of Love series]
Part 6
So it was that the two of them spent the next several hours doing chores (well actually the chores had nothing to do with Kaito's plans, but Shinichi insisted that, if they were going to be running around the house testing out their new bond, they might as well be doing something productive at the same time).
The plan was that they would each go about their business, doing whatever chores they felt like getting out of the way, but in separate places. Every fifteen minutes, however, one of them would stop and think very hard about whatever activity he was engaged in and try to project that moment at his partner. Said partner would calm his mind and 'listen' during that time and make notes in his notebook on what sensations he received and what conclusions he drew. Fifteen minutes later, it would be his turn to project and the other's to receive.
And between these endeavors into mental exercise, they would do the bed and breakfast's chores.
Kaito had opted to go out and clear the snow off the back patios and clean the hot tub (Shinichi could sense his ulterior motives buzzing in the background like an excited swarm of bees).
Shinichi had chosen to finish making the beds and cleaning the bathrooms of those guest rooms that they hadn't done before (no, Sonoko hadn't actually asked them to do this, but their friends would be arriving on Christmas Eve, and Shinichi felt it was the right thing to do. No one wanted to have to spend Christmas Eve making sure their bathrooms were hygienic after all).
Between various rounds of cleaning and organizing, Shinichi found a little time to throw together two large plates of assorted sandwiches which he thought would make a good lunch. While he was doing this, Kaito had decided to move some of the boxes of assorted decorations to different parts of the house where he felt they would be of the most use.
Throughout these many activities, they continued to test their mental communications.
They learned that, generally, they could both always feel each other somewhere in the back of their minds. This feeling was a sense of presence colored with emotions and fleeting impressions. For those impressions to be more defined, however, the other partner had to be really focusing on both whatever it was they were doing and on pushing that entire image towards his mate. Even then, the amount of information actually transmitted still depended on whether the mate receiving the 'message' was concentrating hard enough on receiving said message.
They couldn't exchange words, but, with great concentration, they could transmit fleeting images enhanced by emotional connotations.
To make a long story short, they could indeed communicate through their new bond to a limited degree, but the effort required to pass along anything more than a simple emotion was extensive and required both parties' full participation.
Or at least those were Shinichi's conclusions thus far. And he was quite ready to let the matter rest at that, but Kaito insisted they continue the experiment a little longer.
Shinichi let his breath out in an irritated huff.
He wasn't complaining exactly. Under normal circumstances, he would be all for fully exploring the extent of the properties of their new bond. He understood and agreed that, with their tumultuous lives and his tendency to trip over murderous individuals everywhere he went, the ability to communicate through that bond would be an invaluable tool for keeping them both out of serious trouble. It was also, quite simply, a comfort to know that they would always be able to tell whether the other was all right and whether they needed help. And yes, for all these things, the more information they could learn to pass to one another through the bond the better.
The current circumstances were not, however, normal.
They were quite literally in the middle of nowhere. They were alone, so they were unlikely in the extreme to run into a case anytime soon. That was, after all, part of the reason for coming all this way—the other being, naturally, to have a peaceful, uninterrupted vacation together while they completed their bond. Which brought Shinichi back to the source of his growing distress.
He was in heat damnit. He didn't want to be running all over the house, practicing semi-telepathic messaging with a mate he couldn't even see. He wanted his alpha with him. He wanted to curl up with Kaito, snuggling into a warm nest of pillows and blankets, and just enjoy being together. He wanted Kaito to hold him and make love to him until his thief was all Shinichi could think about.
Not that Shinichi wasn't thinking about Kaito now, he amended. He just wasn't thinking very positive thoughts. He would prefer to be thinking positive thoughts.
He reminded himself that Kaito meant well. The magician had already lost one family member to selfish, murderous bastards. It was a loss he had come to terms with but would never get over. That loss had made Kaito even more protective of his loved ones—which was only natural. Add Shinichi's own trouble-magnet tendencies and it was no wonder that the magician world worry.
Sobered by his own thoughts, Shinichi resumed hanging miniature wreaths on the doors to all the guest rooms on the second floor.
If testing the capabilities of their bond and practicing what communication was possible through it would assuage even a little of Kaito's concern then Shinichi would spend however much time on it that Kaito wanted. Unfortunately, try as he might, he couldn't stop the need he could feel rising inside him as his omega instincts grew increasingly more agitated (really, if he didn't love Kaito so much, he'd miss the days before he met the thief when these urges weren't nearly so strong. But he did love Kaito, and, because he did, he could now begin to accept these instincts and the cravings they brought with them). Nor did he want Kaito to spend this most special of vacations focused on such somber matters.
They could afford to take at least this time for themselves, couldn't they?
Perhaps there was a way to compromise.

Kaito could sense Shinichi's growing agitation, and he understood it. He fully intended to make it up to his omega later. But establishing some basic understanding of how to use their new bond was simply too important. After all, they might find themselves in need of it at any moment.
Some people might say he was being paranoid, but Kaito knew better. It was practicality, not paranoia, to expect the unexpected around one Kudo Shinichi.
If some stranger dressed in ski clothes came knocking right this minute only to collapse the moment they opened the door, babbling about missing comrades, Kaito would not be at all surprised. Such was the way his detective's life worked.
Speaking of detectives, he had the growing feeling that his was up to something.
He could sense a kind of strange, almost bubbly giddiness mixed with embarrassed defiance, anticipation and glee from his mate that was extremely peculiar for Shinichi (granted, being in heat always seemed to make his typically reserved detective go a little loopy—a fact that Shinichi himself resented but which Kaito found rather amusing except on those occasions when it led to his detective getting himself into trouble. But that was neither here nor there).
A glance at his watch told Kaito that Shinichi was supposed to be checking in with him in just five minutes—or rather he should be checking in with Shinichi to see if he could determine what his dear omega was up to.
Okay then. He'd just finish twining the outdoor Christmas lights around the patio rails and columns. Then he'd see about getting some answers.

The one good thing about being in heat, Shinichi thought, was that it gave him an excuse for doing things he would otherwise find too embarrassing to even contemplate.
That was why Shinichi was standing in the bedroom of their suite now, carefully removing his clothes and folding them into a neat stack that he placed atop the dresser where they would be in easy reach later should they be needed. Then he folded the blankets on the bed to one side out of the way and settled himself down in the middle of the large, soft mattress. The fresh, clean sheets felt nice against his bare, slightly heated skin.
Shinichi simply sat there on the bed for a long moment, blushing, as he thought about what he was about to do (and wondered when exactly he had lost his mind). Being in heat gave him an excuse, but that didn't mean he didn't still find the prospect incredibly embarrassing even as he secretly looked forward to his alpha's reaction.
Even thinking about Kaito was making him feel hot and his body tingle all over. The lingering traces of Kaito's scent on the bed weren't helping—or should that be that they were helping too much. The itch inside him grew, and Shinichi fought the urge to squirm.
He thought a bit dizzily that he hadn't even started yet, and he was already aroused.
It was a little mortifying how the thief could have this effect on him even when he wasn't physically present. On the other hand, that just made the plan cooked up by Shinichi's admittedly somewhat heat-addled mind all the easier.
He was doing this for Kaito after all. And for himself too, because that was what good mates did. They considered each other's needs.
Trying very hard not to think about anything, Shinichi lay back down and let his hands wander over his own chest and stomach, trying to imagine they were Kaito's hands. He remembered the way Kaito's calloused fingers had worshiped every inch of his skin during their lovemaking the previous night, and the memory alone was making Shinichi gasp and shudder and the heat inside him pulse.
His hands slid lower of their own accord to stroke his thighs, spreading his legs wide. Those same hands, apparently possessed of a mind of their own at this point, paused to stroke his growing arousal before shifting downward to tease a certain puckered ring.
Shinichi's other hand reached out to find the large bottle of lube he had discovered in the nightstand. Blushing all the while, he coated his own fingers in the slippery substance, which was made a little difficult by the fact that his hands were shaking.
He was hot, and aroused, and about to send his alpha a very…personal invitation.
A nervous and slightly manic grin curled at the corners of Shinichi's lips.

Seeing that check-in time had arrived, Kaito turned his focus inward and reached in that way he was only now really beginning to understand towards that presence in the back of his mind that was his mate. He could feel Shinichi reaching back with rather more vigor than he had at any other time they had tried this.
And suddenly Kaito's head filled with images.
Images of Shinichi lying naked on their bed, knees bent and legs spread wide, and slipping two lubed fingers into himself as he moaned Kaito's name. In and out those fingers pressed, sliding into that tight, slick passage that Kaito's fingers and other things had explored so thoroughly just the previous night.
The image was gone just as quickly as it had come, leaving Kaito standing frozen by the patio door with pants that had suddenly become uncomfortably tight.
Well, he mused, that certainly explained a lot.
A slow, almost feral grin spread itself across the magician's face. He'd known his detective was growing restless, but he hadn't realized just how much. This was going to be—fun.

"Aren't you forgetting something?" a familiar voice asked, tone low and dark with amusement and an underlying intent that sent shivers up Shinichi's spine.
It was only because he'd been expecting the interruption that Shinichi didn't jump. Instead, he opened his eyes to see Kaito tossing his shirt carelessly aside as he stalked across the room towards him. The thief moved with a predatory grace and purpose that made Shinichi's pulse jump and his mouth go dry.
Kaito came to a stop beside the bed and let his gaze rake down the length of Shinichi's body. The omega blushed under his scrutiny, suddenly feeling very exposed.
"How very naughty of you, having fun without me," Kaito continued. "As your alpha, I expect to be invited."
"You were," Shinichi replied, managing a smirk of his own despite his burning cheeks. "I was getting tired of waiting." Then, because he'd already come this far, he spread his legs a little wider to make sure his alpha could see what he was doing and resumed fingering himself. He felt inordinately pleased with himself when Kaito's breath hitched.
"Is that so?" Indigo eyes gleamed. "Well, I wouldn't want to keep my little detective waiting any longer."
That was all the warning Shinichi got before Kaito pounced. The thief had Shinichi's hands pinned above his head before the detective had fully registered that he'd even moved. Smirking down into Shinichi's wide, startled eyes, Kaito shoved three fingers into the detective's already stretched hole, delighting in the way Shinichi squeaked and clenched around his fingers. Holding Shinichi's gaze, he began pumping his fingers roughly in and out of the panting omega. Shinichi gasped and bucked under him. It wasn't long before he was riding the thrust of Kaito's fingers with an eager abandon that went straight to his alpha's cock.
Feeling the way Shinichi was tightening around his fingers and assured that his detective was more than ready for him, Kaito slipped his fingers free, smirking when Shinichi let out a whine of protest.
Kaito chuckled.
"Don't worry," he all but purred, moving to press the tip of his achingly hard cock against Shinichi's eagerly twitching hole. "I said I wouldn't make you wait."
With that, Kaito thrust himself all the way into Shinichi in one swift move, ramming himself straight into Shinichi's sweet spot. The omega detective tossed his head back as a scream of pleasure tore itself from his lips, and he came hard over both their stomachs.
Kaito could all but hear the last threads of his self control snapping as he felt Shinichi constricting around him. With a growl, he began thrusting, setting a hard, fast rhythm that had Shinichi mewling and writhing against his hold in helpless pleasure.
Shinichi's body moved of its own accord to meet Kaito's thrusts, shifting just so to allow the magician in just a little deeper. He was already unbearably aroused again, and all he could think about was how he wanted more of his Kaito—of his alpha.
"Harder—!" he gasped, hips bucking. "D—don't stop!"
If Kaito hadn't been so wholly and entirely focused on the delectable little omega arching under him, he might have laughed. He had absolutely no intentions of stopping. His Shin-chan really should know better. On the other hand, hearing Shinichi beg for more never failed to turn him on even more.
They came together, their voices blending into a single, exultant cry. They collapsed together, shuddering as they fought to catch their breath. It was Kaito who eventually broke the silence.
"When did my innocent little Shin-chan learn to be such a tease?" he asked, amused.
"You're a bad influence," Shinichi said primly without opening his eyes, though the corners of his lips kept twitching in a badly concealed grin. "Didn't you know?"
Kaito laughed, gathering his omega closer and tucking Shinichi's head under his chin. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Shinichi snorted. "You would."
Kaito's chuckle reverberated through them both. "Well, in any case, I'd say we definitely made some headway on this bond communication thing. It's not as precise as I'd like, but it's certainly got its uses—as we've just proven, eh?"
Shinichi blushed. "Oh be quiet."
"Whatever you say, dear."
