Chapter 1: Dogfight
Raul Hernandez had been a dogfighter ever since he was a preteen. He was something of a big shot within Springfield's underground dog-fighting ring, a title he had kept for the past 17 years. During this time, many dogs fought on his behalf, most of which were pit bulls. He would get them as puppies from shelters and families looking to give away their dog's puppies as well as occasionally stealing a dog from a family household.
Like most dogfighters, Raul lived under the belief that the more stress a dog was under, the better it was at fighting and so he would make life hell for the dogs under his "care". He would only feed them food that had already expired and beat them for the slightest annoyance. The dogs that lived under his "care" never came to know the feelings of love and comfort with many of them dying within their first year with Raul. This, of course, did not matter to Raul. To him, those dogs were simply too weak to make it in the cruel world he had dragged them to.
It wasn't just potential fighters that Raul would steal from loving homes either. Many a beloved family pet had been swiped from the comfort of their home to spend the final terrifying minutes of their life as a bait dog for Raul's fighters. He would even take missing pet posters from the poles and stores and use them to find the animal himself. Under his hellish "care," over 300 animals had perished. None of those lives weighed on Raul's conscience as he entered the ally way where tonight's big fight would take place, the solid gray pit bull walking beside him growling and drooling at the anticipation of a new opponent to rip to shreds.
Tonight, he would finally settle the score with his long-time rival, Miguel Rodriguez.
"Well if it isn't Raul!" The gray-haired man proclaimed as he saw his rival approaching. "Ready to have his winning streak broken and his balls cut off and vacuum sealed!" Miguel burst into laughter, his bulging belly jiggling slightly as he bellowed.
"The only one losing your balls tonight is you, Esse!" Raul retorted. "Or at least that's what I would say if you had any!"
The small group of men gathered around the two laughed at Raul's provocation, much to Miguel's chagrin. Torpedo, the brown pit bull next to Miguel, began snapping its jaws at its opponent who Raul had named Hurricane.
"You'll pay for that comment, Raul!" Miguel croaked as he turned toward Torpedo. "Aim for the balls first!"
"You've been training for 6 months just for this night!" Raul barked at Hurricane. "Don't fuck this up!" There was a lot of weight in Raul's words to his fighting dog. Every dog that lost a match and brought dishonor to Raul as a dogfighter was killed immediately. That same guillotine hung over Torpedo's head as well.
The crowd was in a frenzy. The dogs were snapping at each other, each determined to tear the other apart for reasons their simple canine minds could only link to instinct Miguel and Raul glared at each other with confident grins, each completely sure that tonight would end in their victory. A feminine voice calling them out from the darkness of the night would mark the ending of this farce.
"Do you think you're cool?" It asked accusingly, loud enough for everyone to hear. All eyes fell to the entrance of the ally way where the voice had come from, including Raul and Miguel. Torpedo fell silent and watched the entrance with quiet interest while Hurricane snapped and snarled toward the darkness. Raul quickly became annoyed with his dog's barking and kicked the door creature in the head with a loud "Callrse La Boca!" Hurricane let out a whine and silenced himself at once, ears flattened and trembling slightly.
"Oh, now you fucked up!" The voice spoke out again. "At least, that's what I would have said if I had any intention of letting you go in the first place."
"Come on out Puta!" Raul shouted. "Come on out and say that to my face!"
"Gladly," Footsteps could be heard approaching the group and before long, a teenage girl emerged from the darkness. She wore a black tank top under a denim jacket and a matching pair of denim shorts. The sneakers on her feet were mostly white with a single line of blue on their sides. The most unusual thing about this girl to the group, however, was the fox mask she wore over her face. Its red-and-white color scheme reminded Miguel of a Japanese animation he had once seen. "Do you really think of yourself as a real man because you abuse and extort these dogs into fighting for your entertainment? Are you really that pathetic that you need to see them in pain to make yourself feel better?"
Raul grunted in annoyance. "Just what are you on about Puta? Are you an animal lover or something?"
Miguel giggled a little. "Hey yeah! I-I bet she's one of them...uh...Peta motherfuckers eh Chica?"
"Don't you dare associate me with those hypocrites!" The girl snapped. "While it is true I love animals, I'm here of my own volition."
"Now now," One of the men from the audience, a lanky man with more stubble than hair on his head, slowly approached the girl. "There's no need to fight Chica!" He grabbed her arm and brought her closer to him. "If you just let me explain, you'll find that dog-fighting is not so bad. In fact, maybe I could even turn you on to the sport."
The girl made no reaction at the man's advances. She didn't even tense up. The other men, including Raul, watched with great interest, wondering what their old friend, Seth Gonalez, would do with the girl. He always had a thing for the particularly young ones.
Seth's gaze lifted toward the girl's fox mask and with a giggle, he reached for it. "With as pretty a body as you have Chica, I know you have to have a lovely face to match." He cooed. "So why are you hiding it behind this silly old thing?" As soon as Seth's fingertips grazed the hard metal surface of the mask, however, he felt a burning sensation in his throat and realized that he couldn't breathe. He quickly put his hands to his neck, felt a hot liquid drip onto his fingers, and brought them to his face, his fear intensifying as he saw the blood flowing down his hand. His throat had been slit.
Gasps of horror rang out from the group as Seth fell to the ground clutching his throat. Within the fingers of the girl's left hand, the knife she had used to cut Seth still dripped with his blood. "You little Puta!" One of the men screamed as the group brought out their guns and fired. The girl quickly grabbed Seth's arm and held him in front of her, the bullets riddling the already dying man with holes. In their fury, the men emptied their guns into Seth's corpse without realizing it and within seconds, their firearms were only able to produce clicks.
Hearing this, the girl quickly tossed Seth's dead body at the men, causing them to panic in confusion. The girl took this opportunity to rush at the men and slash them with her blade. She cut the first man's throat like Seth's, the blood spurting from the wound flying into another man's eyes and blinding him. The girl quickly turned around and sliced this man's stomach open, causing his insides to fall out. A third man who had been rushing to help his friends stopped in his tracks at the sight of the guts and tripped himself trying to turn back. The girl leaped onto him while he was getting up and plunged the knife through his throat, allowing him to choke on the blade for a few moments before ripping it out. As the third man fell dead, the girl noticed the fourth and final man of the would-be audience running down the Alleyway behind her, trying to escape, the girl turned around and launched her knife into his back. He let out a cry of pain, cursed at the girl in Spanish, and fell down dead.
"Dear God in Heaven." Raul whimpered as he watched the girl turn back to him and Miguel. In the chaos, Both dog-fighters had drowned out the barking and snarling of their dogs by their sides and with a quick "are you thinking what I'm thinking look" at each other, they unchained the dogs and sic'ed them on the girl. "Kill her Hurricane! Tear that puta apart!"
The dogs launched themselves at the girl and for a moment, Raul wondered if she would kill the dogs despite what she claimed earlier about loving animals. To his surprise as well as Miguel's, the girl reached into the pockets of her jacket and tossed out two pieces of raw steak at the dogs. Both having been starved as part of the training to prepare them for tonight's fight, Hurricane and Torpedo greedily devoured the steaks, giving the girl enough time to back away.
"What are you doing you stupid mutt!" Raul shouted. "Kill her!"
"Yeah! Kill her!" Miguel cried.
Both dogs heeded their master's demands and continued toward the girl. Before they could reach her, however, they slowed down and fell to the ground at her feet.
"What the fuck?" Raul snarled. "Hey Puta! Did you just poison our dogs?"
"Of course not, you dumbass!" The girl hissed. "Don't you see their chest rising up and down?"
Both dogfighters looked back at their dogs to see that sure enough, they were still breathing.
"I simply knocked them out with a little tranquilizer of mine." The girl said as she began to walk toward the men. "It's a little concoction I made myself for a science project if you can believe that. It's really perfect for this line of work. Not only is it fast acting with almost no side effects." The girl slipped her hands into her back pockets and pulled out two syringes. "It works on all mammals, including humans."
"Shit!" Raul growled. "I don't know what you're planning to do with me but you'll never catch me!" Raul ran off one way while Miguel ran the other. The girl examined her targets and decided to go for the stockier, slower Miguel first. He was no match for her speed, and before he could even make a fist to try and punch her away, the needle was already in his neck.
Raul didn't see any of this of course. He was too busy trying to escape with his own life. With his dog out of commission, Raul was completely helpless against the girl and all he could do was run away and hope to lose her under the cover of darkness. The irony of a big man like him running from a teenager with an animal mask was not lost on Raul and he felt himself brimming with angry humiliation that he had been put in such a situation. "I'll make you pay for this Puta!" He thought as he neared the entrance to the alleyway. "I'll find you where you live and kill you and your whole fucking family!"
Raul meant to think more about the horrible things he wanted to do to the girl but they were cut short by a sudden and very strong sense of drowsiness. The girl had caught up with him without him even realizing it and stuck the second needle in his neck. She was right, Raul thought as he fell to his knees, it was fast acting. Raul was out cold before he even hit the floor.
When Raul opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was his rival Miguel laying a few feet from him, also just waking up. He felt like he was going to throw up and waited for the vomit to come. When it didn't, he forced himself to his feet and surveyed his surroundings.
He and Miguel were in a batting cage on a field not far from the alley. Just outside the cage, the masked girl stood with one of her hands in her left pocket. Fury filled Raul the second he saw her and he rushed up to the cage's edge, grasping at the mesh while he shouted at the girl. "What the hell is this!? I'll kill you Puta! I'll fucking kill you!"
The girl removed her hand from her pocket and showed Raul the remote-like device grasped within it. She gently pushed the single red button on it and Raul was suddenly shocked by 30 volts of electricity surging from the mesh. The shock sent him flying backward and as he fell, he hit his head on something hard. "Gah! Fuck!" Raul continued to curse in Spanish as he got back up and searched for the object his head had collided with. As it turned out, it was a metal bat, the kind people use to play Baseball within this cage during the day. He picked it up and inspected it closely. As he did so, his gaze turned toward Miguel who was investigating a bat of his own. "Hey Chica!" He called out with his eyes still on the ball. "Are we gonna play baseball or something?"
"No." The girl replied. "I'm afraid the game is much simpler than that."
"Hey Puta!" Raul snapped. "What's the big idea? Where are our dogs? What are you planning to do?"
"Your dogs?" The girl asked with disgust in her voice. "Oh so now suddenly they're your dogs? Tell me something, when you ask that, are you asking where are your beloved and cherished companions or where are your fucking cash cows?"
"Puta!" Raul growled.
"In any case, you don't need to worry about them anymore. While you two were napping, I took the liberty of dropping the dogs off at the Springfield Animal Shelter." Lisa sighed. "I can only hope they can untrain the dogs and make them adoptable again. It breaks my heart to think that you might have ruined their chance of happiness and love for your own selfish reasons."
Raul realized what the girl was implying and smiled to himself, for he was certain that Hurricane was too far gone to be adopted. Miguel, on the other hand, felt a little guilty and crept closer to the cage's edge. "Come now, Chica." He tried to comfort her. "There's no need to be upset. They're just animals."
The girl quickly pressed the button again, shocking Miguel who happened to be pawing at the mesh as he spoke. He fell backward with a loud "Fuck!" and held his hurt hand.
"Just animals!?" She screamed, startling both of the men. "Just animals? And that gives you the right to use them like that? To force dogs to kill each other so you can feel like men? To take away a beloved best friend from a little boy?" The girl reached into her right pocket and pulled out a sheet of paper which she quickly uncrumpled and showed to the two men. It was a picture of a young boy, no older than 5 or 6 from the looks of it, and a small black puppy licking his face, The word "MISSING" headed the paper with information identifying the dog as Blackie written at the bottom. Raul recognized the puppy at once. It was one of the many pets he had stolen for use as a bait animal for Hurricane. The poor thing didn't even last half an hour.
"I know for a fact you took Blackie." The girl continued, her voice breaking a little. "You've been taking pets from their homes and forcing that poor dog to rip them to shreds, you sick bastards! Did you ever stop to think how their owners would feel to lose their beloved pets in such a way? Did you!?"
"Who the fuck cares about a bunch of dead animals?" Raul taunted. "Just get to the point! Why are we in this cage?"
"Simple." The girl responded after taking a moment to recompose herself. "I'm giving you guys the fight you wanted. Only instead of hiding behind those dogs like a couple of cowards, you're gonna be real men and do the fighting yourself."
Raul and Miguel looked at each other and then at the bats in their hands.
"I've provided you with all the weaponry you need." The girl explained. "There's no time limit and only one rule. Only one of you gets to leave this cage alive."
Raul looked back to the girl and shouted. "You crazy Puta! You really thi-
Miguel made the first blow, striking Raul on the side of the head and knocking him down. With his brain whacked, Raul was barely able to see the screaming Miguel as he went for a second swing but still managed to roll out of the way regardless. Seizing the opportunity, Raul slammed his bat into Miguel's leg. Miguel howled in pain as he fell to his knees. Raul got back on his feet and knocked Miguel to the ground with a blow to the back of the head. Consumed by rage and excitement, Raul began to mercilessly beat Miguel to a bloody pulp.
"Fuck you! Fuck you! Fuck you!" Raul screamed with every hit. Blood splattered on his face and clothing but he paid it no mind. He needed to make sure Miguel was dead, that the fat piece of shit that dared to threaten his title of top dog in Springfield's underground dogfighting was never going to walk again even if he lived. "I should thank this Puta for the opportunity she's given me." Raul thought as he bashed the back of Miguel's head in. "Maybe I'll repay her. Yeah. As soon as I get out of this cage, I'll repay her for what she did tonight. All of it!"
With a final sickening crack, a large hole had formed in Miguel's skull, the brain tissue visible beneath the bony helmet underneath his scalp. Raul remained standing over the corpse of his rival, panting as heavily as Hurricane would after a fight. The side of his head still throbbed and on some level, he knew he would have to get to the hospital. After he paid the Puta back.
"Congratulations." The girl stated. "It looks like you won. Does it make you feel like a man, knowing you killed another person?"
Raul glared at the girl without saying anything, blood trickling from his head wound and into his hate-filled eye.
"Whatever. It's not like I really care about what scum like you feels. Anyway, a deal's a deal. You can leave the cage." The girl kept her finger pressed on the red button of her remote for a few seconds until a low beeping sounded from it. The girl began to walk away and Raul approached the mesh and touched it. No shock. Not even static. He noticed the exit at the end of the right side and quickly scrambled out of it before marching toward the girl.
"Stupid little Puta!" He thought. "She really thinks I'm just going to leave without paying her back!? That was my prized fighting dog you surrendered to the shelter you little whore! You need to pay me back for lost goods!" At this point, Raul was running as fast as he could toward the girl who still didn't seem to notice him. At least, it seemed that way until she spoke. "Men are so predictable, especially pieces of shit like you."
"Huh?" His feet still carrying him toward her, Raul watched as the girl bent her arm and moved it downward. A familiar piece of metal slipped from her sleeve into her right hand and before Raul could stop himself, the girl sliced both of his eyes, blinding him. Raul screamed in pain as he pushed his face over his ruined eyes. He tripped on his own feet and fell to the ground before the girl. The girl walked up to the flailing man, waited until she had a good viewpoint of his crotch, and stomped on it as hard as she could. His entire body now throbbing in unbearable pain, Raul could only let out an agonized hiss as he lay on the floor. The girl stood over him, feet on either side of his hips, and bent her knees.
"Did you really think I was going to let you go? After all you've done?" The girl scoffed. "Give me a break."
"But...but..." Raul coughed up some blood. "You said...if I won.."
"I said the winner gets to leave the cage." The girl corrected. "I never said anything about leaving the park. There's no way I'd ever let two monsters like you back onto the streets to hurt more innocent dogs."
"W-Who are you?" Raul cried, realizing that he was really about to die, and for the first time since he was a small child, feeling absolutely terrified.
"I'm someone who's sick and tired of people like you." The girl responded. "Who's sick of people like you hurting animals because you think of them as lesser beings and who's sick and tired of people like you getting away with it because the law feels the same. Surely, you must have guessed it by now, right?" She cocked her head to the side as she asked this.
Raul's eyes grew wide as he remembered the rumors of an animal vigilante in Springfield who kills people like him. In his pride and hubris, he never even considered the possibility that this monster, this hunter of humans would ever come for him. On some levels, he didn't even believe they really existed. But now, as he lay before her as helpless as the countless bait animals he had sacrificed to Hurricane, he realized all too late who this girl was.
"Vengador de animales." He whispered. "The Animal Avenger."
"Damn straight." The girl growled before finishing Raul off with a quick slit of the throat.
After derigging the batting cage and relocating the bodies of the seven men she killed, the girl got on her bike and rode as fast as she could to her neighborhood. Since her phone had died, she didn't know what the exact time was but she knew that soon the Sun would come up and she would have to get ready for school. With all of her supplies in a small green backpack, the girl pulled up to the orange house she called home. She parked her bike in its usual spot in the garage and quietly sneaked throughout the house toward her room. She closed the door behind her, opened her desk drawer, and placed her mask inside. She then removed her shoes, jacket, and shorts, plugged her phone into its charger, and climbed into bed. "I better get as much sleep as I possibly can before school." The girl thought. "Good thing I'm exhausted."
The girl was just about to fall asleep when the door to her room flew open, a wrinkled hand flipping on the light switch. "Lisa!" A motherly voice called out from behind the door. "Get up! It's almost time for school!"
"Wh-What?" Lisa forced her head up from her pillow. She turned to her phone, picked it up and checked it. "No it's not! It's...6:55..." The girl groaned as she looked out her window and noticed the first rays of sunlight seeping through her window. How she missed them she had no idea.
"I'm already making breakfast." The voice of Lisa's mother cooed. "Get dressed and hurry downstairs! We're having waffles!"
"Are you sure they're not just square pancakes?" Lisa asked in an unbelieving voice.
"...Maybe." The door closed and Lisa listened to her mother's footsteps walk away.
"Shit!' Lisa put her hand to her face and shook her head. "I need to stop pulling all-nighters."
(Happy Halloween everyone! Here's the second project I was working on this month. Well, third but as the other story is on another site, let's not discuss it here. I came up with this idea not too long ago and as with my other stories, I promise to see this one to the end. That being said, it won't be until I finish The Yellow Ape and The Black Bee that I'll continue working on this. Can't do too many stories at once you know? Anyway, hope you enjoyed and I'll see you on the flip-side. Chibi out)
