The following days passed one after another rather quickly: Luz had settled in quite well at school and despite the initial disadvantage due to her practically absent education she had easily managed to catch up (it must be said that she had also asked for help from Eda and that she, to the great satisfaction of fairy, had made a serious effort to study even more than what she should). In the end, her performance in school had reached more or less the average level that what would be expected of a girl her age: not as extraordinary as Amity's, but not totally terrible either.

Within two weeks she had become a really good student, and even the teachers had praised her for how hard she was working. Settling in with your classmates... had been a little more complicated. Although Amity had stopped bothering her after their first day, limiting herself to ignoring her and interacting with her only when strictly necessary, the rest couldn',t be said of her friends. They had respected their leader's wishes and had in turn not spoken to Luz again, but they hadn't hidden their hostility towards her, especially Boscha and to a large extent also Skara, who were still not satisfied with feeling comparing her hair to a roast pig or being called Amity's personal slave. Even if this hostility was limited only to dirty looks and nasty comments under her breath, this was enough to cause Luz a lot of problems in making friends: everyone now knew that the most popular girls in school hated the puppet, and no one wanted to go against them. Even so, however, Luz had earned the sympathy of quite a few people in her class: although she had not yet made real friends, she had managed, for example, to have a good conversation with a girl named Bo, to talk a couple of times with a girl with a head so square that it vaguely resembled a crescent who dabbled in tarot cards and who hadn't revealed her name to her because 'the true oracles had no names', and to execute a good group project with someone else named Eileen (who, Luz was convinced, must have had some blood relationship with a cyclops, because her eyes were definitely too big). In short, even if she hadn't yet managed to form a true friendship with anyone, Luz was optimistic that sooner or later she would succeed, despite Boscha, Skara and all those other bullies.

However, as the days passed, Luz also became more doubtful about the path she had chosen to take; although she spent her days going to school and interacting with people her age, she felt she hadn't made much progress in her goal of becoming a real girl. She had no intention of giving up school, also because against all her predictions she was discovering that she really liked learning (even though her favorite days were still the holidays), but she felt she had to try to do something more. One day she decided to talk about it with Eda, who replied: "I told you, neither I nor anyone else can show you the path. You have to understand for yourself what it means to be a real person and above all what kind of person you want to become"

"I know, but everything would be so much easier if I at least had some indications" Luz muttered. "Well... something that at least tells me if I'm doing things right or not"

Eda thought about it for a moment. "Well, you're certainly behaving well from a moral point of view, since you're working hard on your studies and not doing any more mischief" she told her. "But... understanding what it means to be a real person is not something that can be learnt at school. Something deeper is needed, an introspective study. To get indications from someone you should be able to know their entire story and put it to comparison with others and with yourself, and try to extrapolate something from them"

"Story?" Luz repeated, then her eyes lit up. "Of course! Autobiographies! They are basically the stories of people who have decided to write down how they lived their lives. If I read a little of them, I might be able to understand at least something about what it means to be real! Eda, I have to go to the library!"

The fairy wasn't so sure that reading autobiographies would be very helpful; those books contained people's stories, but they didn't illustrate what it really meant to be those people. However, Luz wasn't entirely wrong: if she had compared a lot of them, perhaps she would have been able to reach some conclusions that would have at least allowed her to take a step forward. There was no harm in trying after all. "Okay. Wait while I get dressed, I'll accompany you"

"Yay!" Luz exclaimed jubilantly, and then she ran to call Willow and Gus, who had recently taken up residence on a beam in some beautiful terrariums that Eda had built for them. "Do you guys want to come with me to the library? I want to go and study some autobiographies!"

"I'm happy to come, Luz" Willow said, jumping onto her hand. "Gus, are you there?"

The spider appeared shortly after, but he didn't come from his terrarium but from the one next to it, where Matt resided instead. "Yes, I'm in! Are you coming, buddy?"

"No, I don't want to do it" the crab grumbled. "And stop call me that!"

"Ugh! You never want to do anything, Matt" Luz muttered as she picked up Gus. "Rather, how long are you going to stay parked here?"

Even though Luz had assured Matt that she would take him back to the beach the next day, she realized that due to her schedule she wouldn't be able to find the time to do so, so she asked him to wait at least until the weekend, and the crab had reluctantly agreed; but when the weekend finally arrived and Luz offered to take him home, Matt started making up all kinds of excuses to postpone the departure. Even though he kept saying that sooner or later he would leave, he seemed to enjoy the good life inside the Owl House quite a bit, and he also seemed to have taken a liking to Gus even though he kept saying the opposite: the two now spent a lot of time together as two good friends, so much so that Gus spent more time in Matt's terrarium than in his own. And that day too the crab used the first excuse that came to mind: "You said you want to go to the library, right? Today you definitely won't have time to take me back to the beach, so go ahead, I'm willing to wait a little longer"

Luz rolled her eyes in exasperation, but she pretended nothing happened and after carrying Gus and Willow on her shoulders she went to get dressed; after putting on her usual clothes and placing her hat on her head, she went to the front door and waited for Eda to join her, and then the two set off towards the Bonesborough library. They arrived in less than half an hour and upon entering found themselves faced with thousands of books stacked on dozens of shelves. "Wow… there must be something here that can help me!" Luz exclaimed rubbing her hands together. "Well, I'm going to look for autobiographies!"

"Go ahead, I'm going to see if I can find some good novels to read... preferably not one of those where a young luthier falls in love with a beautiful fairy and promptly their love ends in tragedy" Eda replied heading towards a random shelf.

Luz in turn began searching the entire library for any book that resembled an autobiography; after taking five of them her hands couldn't contain any more, so she headed towards an armchair to sit down and read them, but in doing so she passed in front of a large door. Intrigued, she tried to open it, but it was locked, so she asked a reader sitting nearby what it was about. "It's the forbidden section" he replied. "It contains all books relating to magic and spells. Since they would be dangerous in the wrong hands, only those who are authorized can access them"

"Uh... thanks" Luz thanked him, then she walked away and asked Gus and Willow: "Do you think I should ask for permission to enter that section? I mean, I'm technically something that exists thanks to magic; a book about magic maybe would help me"

"Luz, I don't think they'll allow a girl your age going anywhere near books that might contain witchcraft, curses, anathemas, or even ways to summon the dark lord" Willow pointed out. "And anyway you already have Eda who can keep you updated on the magical front"

"Yes... but maybe there are things that Eda doesn't know either" Luz said.

"She practically brought you to life! How could she not know everything about magic and puppets?" Gus exclaimed. "And then you heard her, what you need is not a spell. You already have within you the magic necessary to transform yourself into a real girl, you just have to meet the requirements"

Luz was about to reply, when suddenly she heard the familiar voice of a boy coming from behind a shelf. Intrigued, she approached and leaned over slightly, and saw that three people were having a rather lively discussion; two of them were a boy and a girl with emerald green hair, while the third was a grim blond that she knew well: "Hunter?"

The blond guy turned around as soon as he heard her, and for a moment he looked scared. "Luz!? What are you doing here?"

"What are you doing here! We thought you left a while ago" Luz said as she approached him. "Didn't you say you wouldn't stay beyond a couple of days?"

Hunter bit his lip. He had tried to cross Luz's path as little as possible, preferring to remain in the shadows, but now he could no longer hold back, so he quickly invented a plausible excuse: "I've changed my mind. I've received some news that has called into question some information I had, so I decided to stay here for a while to get better sources". And having said this, he in turn pretended to be confused: "But what about you? I was convinced that by now you had reunited with your mother and had returned to your home"

Luz's face became so dark that it was almost like a single shadow. Hunter felt very guilty seeing her like this. "Mom... and all the others you knew... are no longer here" the puppet replied in a whisper.

"Oh, Luz, I…I don't know what to say. I'm sorry" Hunter said, feeling like a terrible hypocrite for doing so, but it was necessary for the lie to hold.

Luz shook her head. "It doesn't matter. Instead, tell me about yourself! Who are these two? Your informants or maybe your secret siblings?"

"Pff! I sure hope not" the green haired girl laughed. "I'm Emira, and this is Edric. We're Hunter's friends"

"More two annoying nuisances actually" Hunter grumbled. It had been two weeks since he met the twins and he still hadn't been able to get them off his chest; it was incredible, every day he tried to go to increasingly unthinkable places and used increasingly refined disguises, but every time Edric and Emira managed to find him and drag him into their adventures. If he hadn't already checked with his staff that they didn't have any magical residue on them, he would have thought they knew some spell to find him.

Because of them, Hunter hadn't been able to continue his investigation into the fairy who accompanied Luz, but in reality he had to admit that even without their presence he wouldn't have gotten very far: no matter how much he thought about it, he hadn't been able to find a single strategy that would allow him to find out something about the fairy. He knew the routes he took and the place where he lived, but otherwise he didn't know how to have his powers revealed or his secrets stolen. The only thing he could think of was to fight her and then retreat after forcing her to use at least some of her magic, but he certainly wasn't that suicidal. Maybe in a way it was good that Luz had found him: maybe through her he would be able to discover something. "So, um… if your family is gone, who do you live with now?"

That question was so bad that he would have slapped himself in the face; relating to others wasn't really his strong point. But fortunately Luz didn't take it badly: "Well, now I live with a fairy! Her name is Eda and she's the one who gave me life, and revealed to me that if I put in the effort I can become a real girl too!"

Hunter's face froze for a moment. "What?" he murmured. "A real girl? You mean... you can become a girl with meat and bones?"

"Yes, exactly! Although at the moment I don't think I've made any progress yet" Luz replied. "But I'm not giving up. I'm sure that sooner or later I'll make it!"

If he could, Hunter would have started screaming and cursing even in other languages; that thing absolutely couldn't happen! If Luz had become a real girl like all the others then she would almost certainly no longer be of use to her uncle, and he would undoubtedly blame Hunter. Therefore it was imperative that Luz absolutely did not succeed in her aim! Hunter was suddenly convinced that this meeting had been auspicious, because he had become aware of a danger he had not been aware of. "Well, I wish you good luck" he said, as false as he had ever been in his life.

"Thanks, Hunter! How come you guys are in the library anyway?" Luz asked him.

"These two crazy people dragged me here" Hunter replied pointing to Edric and Emira.

In response the twins shrugged and chuckled. "We needed your help. Do you have any idea how many pranks can be pulled in a library with a little magic?" Emira exclaimed. "Let's wait for Mittens to leave and then let's go wild!"

"Mittens?" Luz murmured in confusion. "Who is her?"

"Oh, she's just our perfect mother's girl sister. You know, top of the class, always studious and diligent, all this nonsense here" Edric replied. "She's in that room with two of her slaves and her private teacher reading to the children"

Intrigued, Luz headed towards the part of the library that Edric had pointed out to her, and when she saw what was there she was petrified: in a room clearly used for the purpose of entertaining young people there was a fairly large group of children who they were sitting on the floor and they were all looking in one direction, and in that point there was a chair on which there was a person that Luz knew very well. It was Amity, and she was reading a story to the children, also doing it with the typical narration of a bard. Next to her there were also Boscha, who was moving her fingers to create shadows on the wall that represented what Amity was telling, and Skara, who was playing a harp creating a soundtrack for the story. Luz had never expected to see those three haughty girls behave in such a loving manner. The children were clearly having fun too, and Luz noticed that sitting nearby there was also an adult lady admiring the show with a satisfied smile on her face; she had long black hair and pale skin, and she strangely reminded Luz of Eda, with the only difference being that her eyes were emerald green instead of gold. "I really wasn't expecting this" she murmured. "It's absurd!"

"A living puppet who is surprised that Mittens reads to children?" Edric and Emira giggled. "I bet you know our sister, right?"

"Yes... we're classmates" Luz revealed. "And I always thought she was quite… mean"

"Yeah, Mittens always acts like a bully" Emira said, then seemed to have an epiphany: "How about we teach her a lesson? Hunter, can you do magic to break the leg of her chair? It'll be hilarious to see her tip over!"

"What? No! That's cruel!" Luz exclaimed, and she hoped Hunter felt the same way. "What kind of siblings are you?"

"The kind of siblings who know how to have fun" Edric replied. "So, Hunter?"

Luckily Hunter for once didn't want to indulge them: in addition that he too considered that joke in bad taste, he didn't want to risk antagonizing Luz. The puppet was the only link she had to finding out anything about the fairy who was protecting her, so it was best to avoid turning her against him. "Sorry, guys, but don't count on me this time. Luz's right, it's not a nice thing to do"

Luz smiled warmly as she saw Hunter side with her. Edric and Emira let out an annoyed snort. "Tsk! What a disappointment you are. Well, if you don't want to do it, Hunter, would you mind lending us your staff so we can do it...?"

"No! I've already told you a thousand times that I will never lend you this staff! This thing is dangerous!" Hunter snapped. "In this staff there's enough magical energy to level the entire neighborhood to the ground! I wouldn't even trust you with the magic needed to light a candle, let alone this!"

Luz was momentarily surprised and frightened by Hunter's statement: she didn't expect the blond boy's staff to have so much power. She also remembered Vee's warnings that it was dark magic and that it was too much to have been infused by a normal sorcerer. She couldn't help but wonder who Hunter knew who could provide him with such items... in fact, now that she thought about it, even though it was already the third time she'd met the boy she knew practically nothing about him. Hunter had always been very clear about not wanting to reveal much about himself, but Luz was starting to get really curious.

Before she could ask any questions, however, a swarm of children poured out of the room; the reading session must have been over, and in fact shortly after Amity, Boscha and Skara came out too, and their eyes widened when they noticed Luz's presence. "What are you doing here!?" Amity exclaimed.

"Um... I came to the library to look for something to help me become a real girl, I ran into your siblings and my friend Hunter, and they showed me that you three read to children" Luz explained hastily. "So... do you do this often or...?"

"It's for extra credit!" all three of them screamed almost in unison.

"Yeah, it's for extra credit... and in fact they are here even in the summer when school is closed" Emira muttered with a laugh.

"Wow... so you girls really have a soft side!" Luz exclaimed in amazement.

Amity, Skara and Boscha turned red. "None of your business, loser!" the magenta-haired girl growled. "Go out of this place now! Take whatever book you came looking for that can satisfy your senseless fantasy and then disappear! And also take these two tricksters and that blond boy over there with you!". Boscha let out a haughty laugh as her eyes landed on Hunter. "Seriously, even your friends are as weird as you, loser! Look at the way he's dressed, who is he, the guard of an emperor? It's ridiculous and..."

Hunter barely moved his staff and Boscha was surrounded by a red aura that lifted her into the air under the amazed gaze of Skara and Amity. "Oh... and you have some magic too, it seems..." Boscha murmured with a bit of fear in her voice. "If I apologized sincerely, would you forgive me?"

Normally Hunter wouldn't even react to Boscha's taunts, since he thaught that they were childish and they affected him as much as a splash of water would affect a concrete wall; however, he had decided to take the opportunity to gain Luz's sympathy even more. If he wanted to use her to find out more about the fairy he would necessarily have to make her a friend, and even if their relationship could already be defined as quite good, it was certainly not a bad idea to try to improve it. He didn't know the situation, but Boscha undoubtedly had some classic bully attitudes towards Luz, so making her pay would probably earn him some points. "If you want my opinion, yours really suck as last words... but after all, it's certainly not the worst decision you've made today"

Hunter moved the staff and Boscha began spinning in the air as if she were a top; just as he had predicted, Luz didn't even try to hold back and laughed heartily at that scene, and so did Edric and Emira. Amity and Skara, on the other hand, took on a worried expression and the latter even intervened trying to help her friend, but as soon as she touched her she too began to spin in the air. "Stop, please! I'm sorry!" Boscha screamed desperately. "I can't take it anymore... I'm about to puke...!"

"What's going on!?"

The woman with black hair that Luz had seen watching Amity reading had come out of the nursery carrying some books with her, but as soon as she saw what was happening she dropped them to the floor and rushed to grab Boscha and Skara; but to everyone's surprise she didn't start spinning in the air too, but rather at her touch the red aura disappeared and the two girls finally fell to the ground, and they seemed to make an enormous effort of will not to cover the floor with their they vomit. "Stay behind me!" the woman exclaimed, standing in front of them like a shield.

Luz realized that they risked getting into trouble. "Ma'am, don't worry, it was just a joke..."

But Hunter aimed his staff at the woman's throat and with his free hand grabbed Flapjack and turned him into a magic wand. "How did you free them from my spell? What are you?"

The woman raised her eyebrows dangerously; she seemed unsure of what to do, but she certainly gave every impression that she would protect Amity and the others from any threat. But any hostility was dissipated when Eda appeared on the scene, evidently looking for Luz, and her eyes widened when she saw her. "Lilith?"

The dark-haired woman also seemed amazed. "Edalyn? What are you doing here? Didn't you live on the other side of the ocean?"

"Wait a minute, do you two know each other?" Luz asked confused.

Eda nodded. "Yes, she's my older sister"

Silence fell on the scene, and everyone then stared at the twist, especially Luz and Amity; but the one who had the most intense reaction was undoubtedly Hunter, who after a moment of shock exclaimed: "Are you kidding me!? So now there are TWO fairies instead of one!?"

Little specific: unlike the canon where they were put together by their parents, here Amity, Boscha and Skara are really friends and care about each other even if they are still obsessed with social status. For this reason they also share some passions in which they are not "completely mean girls", such as reading to children (clear reference to what Amity does in the canon)
