Prologue
"Oh, dear…" Kun-Loon sighed as she eyed the packed bags littering her daughter's room. By now, the sixteen-year-old girl had packed almost everything she would need, along with the things she wanted to take. "Are you sure about this, Kagome…?" she asked, brown eyes settling on her daughter's expression.
At first, the only response she got was a nod from the raven-haired girl. Kun-Loon sank down on the dark blue blankets on her bed. She had long since changed from the pink colors she'd kept during her childhood. Not just her bedroom, either. The change had impacted her attire, as well. A few minutes went by as the rustling of clothes being shoved into a suitcase was the only noise between them. It was zipped up and dropped to the ground with a heavy thud, and Kagome sighed. Her hands fell to land on her hips.
"Yeah," she finally formed a vocal response. Kun-Loon let her gaze settle on her face a second time.
"But staying?" Kun-Loon repeated her prior decision out loud. "For how long? Why did you suddenly decide this?"
"I just…-" She looked down at her feet, catching herself before she could say anything else. Blue eyes lingered on the hardwood flooring as a million things bounded through her skull. "I feel a little guilty, you know?" She turned her attention to her packed bags, avoiding looking out the window so she didn't catch the silhouette of the well house. "I couldn't go last year…"
"Your father understands that you have other things going on," Kun-Loon stated. "Have you talked to Inuyasha about this?" she asked. She knew how her daughter's half-demon boyfriend could be. "Are you sure he won't get upset with you being gone so long?"
Kagome's hands tightened into fists at her side, and she shook her head. "... he doesn't mind," she stated. Kun-Loon sighed and stood up. A second later, she approached Kagome, gently resting her arms on her shoulders. She pressed a kiss to the crown of her head before backing away.
"If you're sure," she finally said. "Just don't forget to write, okay?"
Kagome nodded as her mother made her way to the door. "I won't," she said as a promise. The door was closed once her mother had left. Silence swept over the room, and she fell face-first onto her bed. Her pillows muffled her scream.
She rolled onto her back, blue eyes glaring at her ceiling.
"Inuyasha won't care if I'm not there…" she scoffed to herself. Still, as that bitter sentence left her mouth, tears built up in her eyes. She didn't blame her mother, considering she didn't know the latest developments in her life. She hadn't told her yet. She rolled onto her side, gripping her pillow and tugging it to her stomach. "He'd have to actually think of me for that to happen…" she trailed off with malcontent settling in her heart.
In the end, she knew the only reason he tried to keep her around. It wasn't because of something that made her special. No, it was solely because of her connection with the Jewel. Then, once it was back together, it was only because she reminded him of Kikyo. As it was he still called her that often! She couldn't stand it anymore!
She had tried to ignore it for the sake of her own feelings, but something inside of her just snapped one day. She just couldn't take it anymore.
She came home to clear her mind, and, after the first week, she came to a decision. She wasn't going to just hang around, not when she didn't have to.
Was the decision a bit drastic? Maybe, but she didn't care. If she never saw his face again in her lifetime, then she'd be the happiest person in the world.
She pushed herself up and tossed her pillow aside. Only then did she let her gaze land on the outline of the well house that was visible from her bedroom window. Blue eyes narrowed and she turned on her heel.
"Jerk!"
She was way more of a cat person anyway!
The last of the bags got set along the dark violet bedroom wall. Kagome turned upon realizing her father had paused behind her. She had offered to help bring them all up, but he'd denied the idea altogether.
Blue eyes identical to her own match her stare. He folded his arms across his chest as he seemed to watch her. She didn't back down, choosing to meet the challenge. A few seconds ticked by before his expression broke, and a smile flashed across his face.
"Your hair's gotten longer," he remarked. "That's for sure."
Kagome nodded. She hadn't cut it in the better part of a year now.
"Your mother kept me informed on how things were when you didn't come last year," he continued. "She said you got so busy, but she also said that you got yourself some boyfriend." She could tell that he was seeking clarification on it. She sighed and shrugged.
"I had one," she stated, letting herself correct his information. He hummed, perking up. "Don't tell Mom, but I broke up with him last month."
"Any reason you don't want your mom knowing?" he asked, and she shrugged.
"It's not that I don't want her to know," Kagome sighed. "I just… don't want to have to explain why," she admitted. She knew her father wouldn't push or ask questions. He'd accept it as it was, especially since he didn't know Inuyasha in the first place.
"If he's the one your mom told me about, then I'm glad," her father responded. "No offense, but he sounds like a dick. I was going to tell you that you need to work on your taste in men."
Kagome stifled the urge to roll her eyes. "Oh, you've got nothing to worry about," she remarked. "I feel stupid enough knowing I wasted so many months on him."
"Well, we all do stupid things," he stated in a matching tone. "It's a good thing you got it out of your system now and not in your thirties."
A week had passed, and she had gotten plenty settled in place all over again. It felt nice to be able to let herself focus on something far more simple than the past year of her life.
Despite it being well over a year since she'd been to that school, she was able to integrate back in without any struggle or strife. She already knew her classmates, and they knew her. She was just glad she didn't have to make some dumb introduction when she remembered more than half of them by name., even if she didn't interact with them on a routine basis.
Entering her classroom that morning, Kagome wasn't too invested in her own thoughts to miss the weight of a stare fixed on her person. She ignored it for the most part, up until she walked by the root for it. She lifted her gaze to brazenly mirror him, but the moment she did, he looked away.
Aside from being one-upped, she didn't think much of it. Still, she found it a bit amusing how he'd watch her up until she tried to do the same.
She recognized him as one of her neighbors, as well.
His blonde hair was pulled back in a low ponytail, and his blue eyes were lined by dark liner. A faint dusting of freckles rested over the bridge of his nose. He had let his stare fall to linger on the book in front of him, painted nails tapping faintly on the surface of his desk.
She didn't bother to keep watching him after she'd walked by him. Once she'd made it to her seat, she sank down into it and brushed the occurrence off. She thought nothing of it, outside of the fact that it'd seemed to turn into a habit every day. She couldn't be bothered to let it phase her. She didn't mind either way.
