Chapter 1: Home is a Foreign Place

A/N: Hello everyone, so the remake to Far Away From Home is finally here and now I can proudly say that I have a proper outline for this story. Just a quick disclaimer though, this story will contain spoilers for Fire Emblem Three Houses so if you have not played that game yet then I recomment doing so before reading this story. Without further to do, let us get on with the actual story.

Somewhere—?—?

Where am I? How did I get here? Audrey thought.

That is all that 20-year-old Audrey has been feeling as she opens her eyes, revealing a blurry area around her. She was feeling confused and disoriented about her surroundings.

Why can't I remember what I was last doing before I got here, whatever this place is? Audrey once again thought.

Audrey tries her damndest to remember what happened to her but only has vague flashbacks of what is probably her and her friends in the woods. Audrey looks around and sees she is lying on a marble floor, and thanks to a few rays of sunlight peering through the stained glass windows, she can fully make out her surroundings. She can see fiery candles around her casting dim shadows and towering stone pillars and wooden pews lining the aisle. Audrey now wondered if she was in some church as this all looked like the interior of a church. But one thing was off and no crosses were anywhere to be found. All that was found were strange symbols that she could not describe.

Audrey then hears the door to the church open. she instantly gets up, much to her surprise, and runs to a nearby pillar to hide. When she peers from where she is hiding, she can make out the two figures who just entered the room. One figure appears to have medium-length green hair, a golden circle around his forehead, is wearing a dark blue coat with white buttons, and has a cape flowing behind him. The second figure appears to be a young girl, possibly around 15 years of age if Audrey had to guess. She has green hair with golden hair ornaments and is wearing a black dress with fluffy sleeves. Audrey immediately notices something is up when she sees how the two figures are dressed. They are either historical reenactors or their fashion style is way out of the 21st century. The man walked toward the front of the room and then knelt in silent prayer as the girl did the same.

After a while of praying, the girl looks up and sees Audrey, then gasps in surprise, alerting the other figure present, who turns around and sees Audrey. The man frowns and stands up while the girl runs towards Audrey excitedly, with the man following close behind. "Hello there, I am Flayn. What is your name, and how did you get here? Aren't you aware that the cathedral is only open to a select few at this hour?" Flayn began before chuckling. "My apologies for being like this; I just get excited when I meet new people," Flayn once again said. Audrey, startled by what had just transpired, tries to act calm and polite as she is thinking of what to speak at the moment. "M-my name is Audrey Dustin Archer, and I-"Audrey paused what she was about to say next as she had to think her next words carefully. "I am just lost and confused as to where I am, and it would be a big help if you tell me where I am so that I can return home," Audrey blurted out.

Jesus, that sounded way worse than expected. Audrey thought.

Before Flayn could even reply, the man walked towards Audrey with a severe and suspicious look. "Flayn, please leave the talking to me," the man said before glaring daggers into Audrey. "Greetings, I am Seteth, the Holy Chamberlain to the Archbishop, and I am the older brother of my dear sister, Flayn, over here. May I ask Audrey if that is even your name, who you are, where you come from, and especially how you entered the Cathedral at this hour? Like my sister asked you earlier, aren't you aware that the Cathedral at this hour is only open to a select few, including myself and my sister? Or are you someone with ill intentions plotting against the Church?" Seth asked. Audrey now felt intimidated as she, of course, didn't know who these people were, but she still kept her calm and resisted the urge to storm out of the Cathedral.

"I… I am from Huntington, located on Long Island in New York. I honestly do not know how I came here or what this place is. I'm not trying to do anything wrong, as I want to return home. I don't even know where I am besides being in a Cathedral, '' Audrey said.

"Do you seriously think that I will believe such blasphemy from someone the likes of you? I mean, I have never heard of the places you just mentioned, and besides, you very clearly know where you are," Seteth retorted. "If I am going to guess, you are likely a spy, a heretic, or even a lunatic sent here by those who dare defy the Church. I am afraid I can't let someone like you go free as I don't even know your full identity," Seteth continued.

"I have plans to take you to Archbishop Rhea, where she will know what to do with you, '' Seteth concluded. Audrey was shocked. Where was she? Was she even still on Earth? So many questions floated through her head. "Brother! Is that necessary? I mean, Audrey isn't a bad person, and what if what she is saying is true? I mean, look at her. She is wearing unfamiliar clothes, is she not? Please let Audrey stay for a while, at least until we can find a way to bring her back to her home," Flayn pleaded as Seteth contemplated her words. Audrey then unstrapped her bag and rummaged through its contents, hoping to find something to prove to Seteth that she was telling the truth.

She then pulled out her flashlight, and she immediately heard a dagger unsheathing when she pulled out the object from her bag. "Relax, this is not a weapon. But rather, an object from where I come from called a flashlight," Audrey explained as she hit the button on the side, turning the object on and illuminating a dark corner of the Cathedral. "What kind of magic is this?" Seth asked, looking shocked. "It's not magi- wait, are you implying that magic exists here?" Audrey asked.

"Yes, I have never heard of a place without magic. You see, Audrey, there are magical energies all around us," Seteth replied as Audrey's mouth fell agape. That was her cue that she was no longer on Earth as there was never a point in time in said planet's history in which magic existed. Also, couple that with the fact that these peoples' hair does not even look dyed as it looks more natural and that these people don't even know what a flashlight is. Seteth then gestured at the flashlight which Audrey lent to him. "What strange alchemy; I mean, your people must be advanced to pull something like this off without magic," Seteth said as he handed the flashlight back to Audrey, and the latter put the object back in her bag.

Audrey then goes into her pocket and pulls out her wallet, and there she pulls out a few dollar bills and her driver's license. She hands the dollar bills to Flayn and the driver's license to Seteth, and they observe the items curiously. "Flayn, what you are holding is money from my homeland, and it has the name of the country I am from. Seteth What you are holding is called a driver's license, and it tells you that I am who I say I am," Audrey explained. "Is this you?" Seteth asked, pointing towards the tiny picture of Audrey. "Yes, that's me. That there is a picture, and it is taken using a device known as a camera," Audrey explained. "New Paper money. Also, it appears your country is called the United States of America?" Flayn asked. "Yes, that is correct'' Audrey replied.

Audrey then pulled out her smartphone and showed it to Seteth and Flayn, who curiously looked at it. "What is that metal thing?" Seteth asked. "This is called a smartphone, and it is used for communication where I am from, '' Audrey replied before turning it on. Audrey then went over to the camera app and showed Seteth and Flayn her many photos. "Why are you and many others wearing masks in this picture?" Seteth asked, his brow raised. "Long story," Audrey replied. "What are you eating in this picture?" Flayn asked. "That is called ice cream, and it is prevalent back in my world," Audrey replied, but then she realized her mistake as Seteth and Flayn both looked at her.

"Come now, what did you say about being from another world?" Seth asked, giving Audrey a stern stare. "Oh, um see… I don't think that I am from around here, and um… I think I may be from another world, '' Audrey replied. "So you are saying that you are an interloper?" Seteth asked. "Yes," Audrey reluctantly replied. "What is the name of this world?" Seteth asked. "Earth," Audrey replied. "Earth, what a curious name. So your world is named after the ground?" Seteth asked as Audrey nodded her head in response. "Anyway, do you believe me now? Since these are the only objects sent with me from Earth,'' Audrey said. "Hmmm… while I do believe you now. I have a few questions regarding your world," Seteth began. "For starters, what are a few other countries in your world, and what are their characteristics?" Seteth asked.

"Well, there are more countries than I could name, but first, what better country to start than my own, the United States of America? In the United States, it comprises fifty states, each acts as its governing territory. The country functions as a democracy, and every four years, there is an election where the people decide to elect their leader," Audrey explained as Seteth put a hand on his bearded chin. "Fascinating; I have never heard of this 'democracy' before, but it sounds like an intriguing form of government," Seteth commented. "Then there is the country my grandparents are from, and it is called the United Kingdom, and as its name may imply, the nation is a monarchy. Its geography mostly consists of rugged hills and low mountains," Audrey explained. "That is truly fascinating. But what about your perfect understanding of Fodlanese? For your information, we are in Garreg Mach Monastery, which is situated in the center of the continent of Fodlan," Seteth said.

"Well, where I come from, we have an identical language called English, '' Audrey replied. "English? Why not American?" Seteth asked. "Long story," Audrey replied.

"Ok, my next question is, what did you do where you come from?" Seteth said. "Well, back home, I work at a cafe which is essentially… well, it is a restaurant, and this was after I quit school," Audrey replied. "What did you study?" Seteth asked. "I studied how to become a teacher… a teacher for very young kids, to be specific, '' Audrey replied. Seteth pondered Audrey's words for a moment before nodding. "Ok, that is it for the questions, I assume," Seteth said.

Deep down, the man wondered whether or not Audrey was telling him the truth. The evidence was all too much to prove it. But what if just because of her advanced objects Audrey could be with-. No, because when did the Agarthans, the ancient enemies of the Church, use paper money and wear clothes like Audrey? He had to believe her story, but he could not trust her. At last, Seteth finally spoke up.

"Even though I believe your story, Audrey. I still don't trust you, so I am going to detain you and bring you back to my office, where I will figure out what to do with you," Seteth said as he pulled out a rope before tying it over Audrey's hands. He then ushers Audrey back onto her feet and directs her and Flayn out of the Cathedral.

So I woke up here in some other world, possibly in another universe where some green-haired people are treating me like I'm some villain. How lovely. Audrey thought.

Garreg Mach Monastery-Outside—Sat; Pegasus Moon 22–Morning

When the trio left the Cathedral, Audrey had to squint her eyes at the bright outdoor sun. When the trio began walking across a nearby bridge, Audrey looked over, and she saw a mythical creature she thought she'd never see in real life. She saw a pegasus soaring high in the sky with a woman in armor and wielding a lance riding the winged steed. Audrey also can't help but admire the fresh scent of mountain air. It doesn't take her long to realize that Garreg Mach is located in a mountain range judging by the beautiful mountains in the distance, which look like something straight out of a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. Along the way, the trio passed by many monks, knights, and people who looked around Audrey's age as they appeared to be wearing a black and gold uniform.

"Um, Sete-." "Please save the questions for later, Audrey, as now we ought to get to my office, '' Seteth quickly replied. "What was your question, Audrey?" Flayn whispered. "I was just wondering why those people over there are wearing that strange uniform, '' Audrey replied. "Oh, those are students at the esteemed Officers Academy here at Garreg Mach," Flayn replied. "It is a school for nobles and commoners who can afford the institution fee from all around Fodlan to come to learn the arts of combat. I want to join the academy, but my brother won't let me out of concern for my well-being," Flayn replied with a tiny hint of sadness in her voice.

Eventually, the trio arrived at Seteth's office, where he pulled out a ring of keys, put one of the keys into the keyhole on one of the double doors, then opened it and quickly ushered Flayn and Audrey into the room before closing and locking the doors. Seteth then walked on over to his desk, and he gestured for Audrey to sit at one of the chairs across from his desk, which she did. Audrey looks around the office as Seteth reviews some papers on his desk. Audrey can see many things, from a portrait of a dragon of sorts to a massive bookshelf lining the wall, a few comfy-looking chairs in the back left-hand corner of the room, and an enormous board on the left-hand wall of the room with many papers of strange diagrams plastered on the board. Seteth then looked up from his papers to face Audrey with a severe and stern expression.

"Well, Audrey, after pondering what I will do with you, I think I have reached a valid conclusion. While I do believe your story about being from this world called Earth you speak of, I still don't trust you as, for all I know, you could have been sent here by some government in your world to infiltrate us,' Seteth said as Audrey rolled her eyes but kept her mouth shut. "Even though I have no proof or evidence to support my claim, it is my duty as Holy Chamberlain to the Archbishop to protect the Church of Seiros from any threat or harm. So you have two options. Either I turn you over to the Archbishop, and she decides what to do with you from there, or you work for the monastery as a cook," Seteth said as Audrey pondered her decision carefully.

Well, this world's prisons likely don't have the best hospitality because this is technically still medieval, so these people are probably not too big on human rights. So the job is probably my best bet. Too bad there is no Thirteenth Amendment in this world to keep me from facing this fork in the road. Audrey thought.

"Alright, fine, fine, I will choose the job now. Will you let me go or something?" Audrey said. Seteth nodded approvingly. "Well then, welcome aboard, Audrey," Seteth said, extending his hand as Audrey hesitantly shook it. "Now, as a cook, you will prepare food in the dining hall, which I think is self-explanatory. Some of our most talented cooks will train you," Seteth said. "But don't think you are off the hook that easily as I will still be keeping a close eye on you, and the second I suspect something is up, I will have no reason to turn you over to the Archbishop and trust me you do not want to get on her bad side. I will also be confiscating your belongings." Seteth said as he untied Audrey's hands and had her hand over her bag to him, which he put underneath his desk.

"Also, I almost forgot, but I will need to go get you a uniform so that I will be right back," Seteth said as he got up from his desk but handed Flayn a dagger and whispered something into her ear before walking out of the room. "Does your brother think I am that big of a threat?" Audrey asked. "Sorry, Audrey, he is like that sometimes. He has good intentions, though, as he only wants what is best for the monastery and its inhabitants. Still, I bet this knife could go better towards fileting a fish rather than slicing a person," Flayn said as soon as Seteth returned with a brown tunic with a hood, light brown sleeves, and light brown trousers.

"This here will be your new uniform, Audrey; I request you change into this immediately to avoid spreading suspicion about where you are from," Seteth said, handing the tunic over to Audrey. "Also, before you go, here is the key to your room and your room number '019'. And your first day of work starts on Monday at the crack of dawn, so don't be late," Seteth said before ushering Audrey out of the room. Once Audrey left the room, she stood frozen in front of the door to the office for a while.

So, I have been transported to a medieval society on another planet. Let alone one with green-haired people, magic, and pegasi. Now, I won't be too surprised if I see singing ducks, elves, or even literal fire-breathing dragons. Also, I got hired to work as a medieval cook. Well, at least I didn't need my resume or even a college diploma to pull off this gig. Audrey thought.
