The party came to an end just before midnight, I'd met his entire family now and they were all surprisingly welcoming. His brothers pleased Victor had found a woman that wouldn't be intimidated by him and even challenged him and his blunt and uptight personality.
However, even with all the smiles and the laughter I still sensed that feeling of dread and the closer to midnight we got, the worse it became. I wondered if this was how Cinderella felt when she went to the ball? But instead of just returning back to her equally beautiful self but just in rags instead of a ballgown, something more sinister was waiting, using the final chime of midnight for the perfect time to strike.
"Something's wrong."
I say rather abruptly, I sensed a familiar energy somewhere and it was cold and dark. It felt like the energy in my father's house but it wasn't the same person. They'd been around each other though, I could smell it like a blood hound. But why did I feel like I was the fox being chased by viscous dogs and idiots on horseback, blaring their obnoxious horns and trampling over everything in their path to get the trophy.
"Amy, I can assure you that there's no danger here."
Will said beside me, flashing me a handsome smile as I clenched my jaw. Why was nobody listening? I know that the Benedict's were renowned in the Savant world but it still bothered me that they didn't take my warnings seriously.
"Vick… The USB, what did you do with it?"
I asked, his hand pressing on the small of my back as he looked down at me with a raised eyebrow.
"It was given to Yves to look into. Why?"
I looked around the room, my body felt jittery and I couldn't stop it.
"Sweetheart, relax."
"I can't! Something is coming and you're all blind to it! They either have some ridiculous shields or you're just ignoring the damn obvious!"
I doubt they'd ignore it, the prior reason was the most likely. It didn't stop the Benedict's from staring at me though, thankfully we were the only guests left in the venue.
"Easy Red, don't need a repeat of the lake incident."
Xav mused and I snapped my head toward him, my silver eyes furious. I felt like a kid right now, trying to tell adults a story about what happened and they just think I'm some cute little girl who doesn't know any better.
"Maybe you should get her home, son?"
Saul suggested and I took in a deep breath. My eyes closing as I did my breathing exercises to calm myself. I kicked off my heels, feeling that horrible sensation return even stronger. Kinda like you're rock climbing and you're watching the rope holding you up as it slowly frays, your eyes glued to it as you wait for it to snap. You know it's coming but you just have to wait for the inevitable.
"Maybe that's a good idea, come on Amy."
Victor took my hand, going to pull me away just as I felt the air hum, my eyes widening as I scream loudly at everyone to get down. Thankfully they oblige, just as the wall of windows nearest the street explode inward. Glass flying everywhere. My soul finder immediately grabs me and pins me to the floor as he shields me with his body.
"How can this happen?!"
Victor yells through the family telepathic link, the sound of glass hitting the concrete floor filling my ears. I wanted to be petty and say I told you so but it wasn't the time. I'd do it later.
"I don't understand how none of us saw this?!"
Zed replied and I felt another surge of power, the shards of glass lifting from the ground around us as well started to get up. My eyes widening as my heart pounded. Glass, I could do something about glass. I'd destroyed many a window in my time. If I didn't, my new family would be turned into a human voodoo doll, the glass covering every inch of their perfect skin.
"Close your eyes!!"
I flip Victor onto his back, my legs either side of his hips as I crouch over him but facing the other way, my walls lowering as I let my overwhelming need to protect them ignite the power I usually battle to control.
"Amy what are you doing?!"
My soul finder wraps his arms around my waist, his chest pressing against my back as my mind focuses on the energy that's manipulating the glass shards, I take in a deep breath, the shards moving toward all of us at blinding speed - Sky screaming in fear as Zed covers her before I let out a huge pulse of energy, causing the glass shards to turn to dust before it could hurt anyone. My heart was pounding, my headache brewing as my stomach churned. I dropped down onto Victors lap, his arms holding me tight as I took in deep breaths. Bringing up my walls as I felt the energy that made my skin crawl leave, the threat gone. For now.
"Are you alright?"
He whispered to me, already knowing the answer as Xav rushed over to me. His hand pressing against my shoulder as I feel the headache and nausea fade away, my body relaxing slightly as I close my eyes.
"They're gone, I can't sense them now."
I say to everyone as Victor stands with me in his arms, my feet gently pressing against the ground as his family looks at me, Yves was smiling - like I was Annakin and he was my Obi-wan. I sensed he heard that as he let out a small laugh, I didn't understand he could find anything amusing after we all nearly got turned into ribbons.
"They must have a seriously powerful shield to prevent us from foreseeing their attack."
Saul said as he walked over to me, his hand cupping my chin as he looks over me for any injuries. A small, fatherly smile on his lips.
"You did well, even with our telekinesis we wouldn't be able to protect everyone. Thank you for acting so quickly."
He places a kiss on the top of my head and turns to everyone.
"Everyone get back home, we need to figure out who attacked and how we're going to prevent it from happening again."
"How are we going to do that if we can't see them coming?"
Trace said, his police officer hat on now.
"I haven't figured that out yet but Amy could, we will see if we can link up together using Zed and have her as the catalyst. Maybe with her, we will be able to bypass the shield."
"Oh come on dad, you know if she's exposed to all our energy like that it'll overwhelm her."
Victor said from behind me, his arms not letting me loose this entire time.
"We don't have much choice."
My soul finder growled in my ear, hating the idea of me being put in harms way, I cut him off with an elbow to the ribs as I looked at his father.
"I'll give it a go, whatever I can do to help."
"No way! I've seen what it does to you."
Victors voice was stern, his expression icy as his family looked at him in silence. My hands removing his grip around me as I turn to face him.
"Victor Benedict, do not think for one second you are in charge of me. Yves and I have been working hard and tonight has everything to prove I am better at this than before. You might be able to frighten other people into submission but you won't scare me. Understood?"
A few whispers and whistles happened behind me as he looked down at me with worry and anger in his eyes. His jaw clenched tight as I sighed and pressed my lips against his, his muscles relaxing as his hands slide to my hips. Snickers behind me as Xav mutters something along the lines of me being the only woman able to keep him in line.
"That's cheating…"
Victor whispers as we pull away, his forehead resting against mine as I smile.
"You didn't seem to mind."
His hands lift to cup either side of my cheeks, tilting my head up to look at him.
"Not one little bit."
