Hailey and Jay are dating in this one shot.
Hailey woke up for work feeling weird but thought it was allergies. She ignored it and got ready for work. She finished getting ready and took some allergy medicine then drove to work. She got there at the same time as Jay and they walked up together. Halfway through the day, they were waiting for their suspect to come out of the restaurant and Hailey wasn't feeling good. She kept sniffling and coughing and her eyes kept watering.
"You ok?" Jay asked.
"Yeah just allergies ill be fine" Hailey responded.
Right then the suspect came out. They all chased him and got him in custody. They got a confession surprisingly quickly and were able to finish the case. Hailey was glad. She felt horrible and wanted nothing more than to lay in bed and take a nap. Once everyone finished their paperwork, Voight sent them home. Jay could tell Hailey was not feeling well.
"Are you sure you're ok?" Jay asked as they walked to their cars.
"Yeah, my allergies are acting up. I just need more medicine and some sleep" Hailey replied.
They got to their cars and kissed then drove home. As soon as Hailey got home she changed into comfy clothes laid down in bed and took a nap. She woke up a few hours later, ate dinner, took a shower and went back to bed, hailey knew she was getting sick. She was never tired like this unless she was coming down with something. She woke up the next morning feeling like crap. She decided to push through and go to work. When she got there Jay could tell something was up.
"Hails you ok? You dont look like you're feeling good" Jay asked.
"Allergies again ill be fine" Hailey replied.
Hailey was scared to admit that she was sick. She used to get in trouble for being sick. Up until this point she either hid it when she was sick or pretended like it was something else. Jau could tell she wasn't telling the truth and decided to keep an eye on her. They finished for the day and Hailey didn't feel good at all. Jay decided to invite her over to his place so he could keep an eye on her and take care of her.
"Hey come to my place. I'll make soup and we can watch movies I can tell your not feeling good" Jay told her.
"Ok that sounds good thank you" Hailey replied.
Hailey wanted to go home and try to sleep whatever this was off but at the same time her anxiety was bad and she didn't want to be alone. She followed Jay to his house and grabbed her bag of spare clothes she kept in her car. When they got inside they got changed and then went to the couch and cuddled. Hailey ended up falling asleep in Jay's arms a few minutes later. He sat with her in his arms rubbing her back for a bit before he laid her down and put a blanket on her and started dinner. He knew she was sick but she didn't feel warm. He made some soup and then woke Hailey up when it was done. They ate and watched a movie. Hailey fell asleep halfway through the movie. When the movie ended Jay carried her to his room. He didn't want to wake her up and didn't want her driving home in her condition. Hailey woke up at 4 a.m. and didn't realize where she was. She realized she was in Jay's bed and got embarrassed. Jay woke up when she felt her get out of bed.
"Hails you ok?" Jay asked.
"I'm so sorry I didn't mean to fall asleep here," Hailey said embarrassed.
"Hey it's OK I dont mind. You fell asleep on the couch and I didn't want you driving home. Come back to bed," Jay replied motioning for her to get back in bed,
Hailey got back in bed and Jay kissed her head. They both fell asleep again and woke up at 9 a.m. since it was Saturday and didn't have to come in unless something happened. When Hailey woke up she felt even worse. Jay took one look at her and knew she probably had a fever. He went to feel her forehead and she flinched away.
"Woah hey Hails im not going to hurt you your safe you okay ssh" Jay soothed while putting his hands where Hailey could see them.
"I'm sorry" Hailey whimpered.
"Hails you did nothing wrong you have nothing to be sorry for," Jay told her. "What's going on?" He asked.
Hailey didn't know what to say and shook her head. She was scared and about to have a panic attack. She knew Jay would never hurt her but the memories from her childhood were overpowering,
"Are you sick?" Jay asked.
"Yeah I think so im sorry" Hailey replied.
"You have nothing to apologize for. You can't help it" Jay told her.
Jay could tell something was going on.
"Hey talk to me. What's going on? I can tell you're scared but I promise you I'm not mad and I'm never going to hurt you" Jay said softly.
"I know it's just hard because I used to get in trouble when I was sick as a kid. I'd get told that I was faking it or exaggerating or I needed to suck it up" Hailey replied trying not to cry.
"Oh Hails cmere," Jay said as he pulled her into a hug.
She couldn't hold back her tears anymore when he hugged her. Jay felt her begin to cry and hugged her tighter and began to gently rock her.
"Ssh your ok it's ok I've got you your safe" Jay repeatedly soothed. He began to run his fingers through her hair and scratch her scalp. She cried herself to sleep in his arms. He held her as she slept for an hour. He wanted to take her temperature and get some food and medicine in her.
"I need you to wake up for me. I want to take your temperature and get you some food and medicine" Jay said as he rubbed her back to wake her up.
Jay grabbed the thermometer and took her temperature.
"You have a fever Hails it's 101," Jay told her and Hailey groaned.
"I know I'm going to get you some food and medicine" Jay replied.
"I'm not hungry" Hailey replied,
"I know but you can't take medicine on an empty stomach it could make you sick," Jay told her. "Does toast sound good?" he asked.
Hailey nodded and Jay went into the kitchen and started on the toast. While it was in the toaster he got a glass of water, Advil and Dayquil. Once the toast was done he put some butter on it and then brought everything out to her. She took the medicine and ate most of her toast then laid down and fell back asleep on the couch. Jay kissed her head and covered her with a blanket. He went and made some breakfast for himself then, went and sat on the couch next to her and played on his phone when he was done eating. Hailey woke up two hours later.
"Hey Hails are you feeling any better?" Jay asked.
"No worse" Hailey replied.
"I'm sorry cmere," Jay said as he pulled her into his lap.
He turned on Netflix and then wrapped his arms around her. They watched Netflix for an hour before Hailey had a coughing fit. As soon as Hailey began to cough he paused the movie they were watching and began to rub her back and talk her through it.
"Ssh you ok breathe through it I've got you" Jay soothed.
Hailey finished coughing a couple of minutes later.
"You ok?" Jay asked.
"No I feel awful" Hailey replied.
"I'm sorry babe you can't take anything for a few hours," Jay told her.
He got up and made her some tea and got a cough drop for her. He came back to the couch and gave them to her. She took the cough drop and drank her tea as they continued to watch their movie. She fell asleep a few minutes later and when the movie ended Jay carried her into his room. He tucked her in then went and grabbed the medicine and thermometer and went back to Hailey. When he got back he crawled in next to Hailey and pulled her into his chest and held her. He woke her up two hours later for lunch and medicine. They had leftover soup for lunch and Hailey took her medicine. They spent the rest of the day watching movies, and hailey fell asleep soon after dinner. Hailey slept on the couch while Jay sat next to her and got caught up on some paperwork, 45 minutes later Jay felt something hit his leg and heard Hailey start to cry in her sleep. She was having a nightmare. He quickly shut his laptop and put it on the table.
"Ssh your ok your safe it's not real please wake up" Jay soothed while rubbing her back. She woke up a few minutes later and started sobbing.
Jay immediately lifted her up, put her in his lap, and began to rock her.
"Ssh your okay just breathe you're safe no one is going to hurt you I've got you" Jay soothed until she calmed down and pulled away. "You ok?" he asked.
"No. I hate being sick. Whenever I have a fever it messes with my head and I get nightmares. I'm sorry you had to see that." Hailey replied.
"No dont apologize this is not your fault, you did nothing wrong," Jay told her while kissing her head.
Hailey got up and went to the bathroom and splashed her face off with some cold water. She went back out to Jay a few seconds later.
"C'mon babe let's go to bed. It'll be more comfortable there" Jay told her.
They went to Jay's room and got in bed. Hailey rested her head on Jay's shoulder and Jay wrapped his arm around her and rubbed her back.
"Is there anything that helps with your nightmares?" Jay asked.
"Yeah, but it's embarrassing" Hailey replied looking away from Jay.
"You dinr have to be embarrassed I will never judge you" Jay replied.
"The only things that help are white noise and someone holding my hand," Hailey reluctantly told him.
"Ok, that's totally doable. Dont be embarrassed. I can't sleep in silence either. It's completely understandable that you need physical touch in moments like this" Jay told her.
He got up got his iPad and quickly downloaded a white noise app. When it was ready he put it on, turned off the lights, got in bed and grabbed Hailey's hand, and pulled her into his chest.
"Try and get some sleep babe I love you," Jay told her.
"I love you too" Haileuy replied.
Hailey had 4 nightmares between 10-4 despite having taken Nyquil. Hailey woke up at 5 am hot and sweaty. Jay felt her shift and woke up.
"Ypo ok Hails?" Jay asked.
"No I'm so hot I feel awful" Hailey replied.
Jay felt her forehead she was burning up and very pale.
"Oh, babe I'm so sorry. Stay right here. I'm going to get some medicine and the thermometer" Jay told her.
He quickly got everything and got back to Hailey. Je took her temperature and it was 1-3.5.
"Your temperature is 103.5 we need to get that down. Take some medicine for me." Jay told her while handing her a glass of ice water and Dayquil and Advil. She took her meds and laid back down.
"We need to cool you off. Does a cool bath sound okay?" Jay asked, Hailey nodded.
Jay started a bath and made the water lukewarm. Once it was ready he went back in his room to get her.
"Do you want me to be with you or do you want to be alone?" Jay asked.
"Can you stay? I dont want to be alone right now" Hailey replied.
"Yeah of course babe" Jay replied.
He led her to his bathroom and helped her get undressed and into the bath. He grabbed a washcloth and slipped in behind her. He began to wipe Hailey's body down with the wet washcloth starting with her face and she sighed in relief. They sat there for a bit then Jay washed Hailey's hair and led her out. She got changed into fresh clothes and then went and sat down on the bed. Jay came in a few minutes later with a hair-tye hair brush and hair dryer which Erin had left and he kept for situations just like this.
"Scoot forward a little Jay instructed.
Hailey soccted forward and Jay sat behind her and began to gently brush her hair. Once it was brushed he blowdryed it and then put it in a messy bun.
"Thanks," Hailey said.
"Of course, you dont have to thank me," Jay told her. "Do you feel any better?" he asked.
"Yeah, a little" Hailey replied,
"Good I'm glad," Jay told her.
They laid back down and fell back asleep since it was early. It was only 6:30 a.m. and it was Sunday so they didn't have work. Jay woke up a few hours later and Jay was still asleep. He tidied up the house and was in the middle of making breakfast when Hailey.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" Jay asked.
"Awful" Hailey replied.
"I'm sorry Hails. You can take some medicine with breakfast. It's almost ready" Jay told her.
A few minutes later breakfast was done and they sat down to eat. They both ate and Hailey took her medicine. Jay cleaned up and made her some tea. They back into his bedroom and watched TV. Hailey was weak and exhausted so she alternated between sleeping and watching TV. Throughout the day Hailey's cough got a lot worse. Jay was worried. She had multiple coughing fits and they hurt. Nothing would touch them. Jay got her some Vapo rub and she put it on her chest and feet. They went to bed early that night since they were both pretty tired. Jay woke up at 3 a.m. to Hailey coughing violently and wheezing. Jay talked her through it and then grabbed his phone and googled the symptoms of pneumonia and Hailey had pretty much every symptom. This scared Jay he knew how serious pneumonia could get.
"Hails we need to go to med. I think you have pneumonia. Your really sick" Jay told her.
"Can we just go in the morning I'm exhausted" Hailey asked.
"Hails" Jay tried to argue.
"Please" Hailey begged.
"Ok fine but we're gonna do some stuff here and if your breathing gets worse we're going," Jay told her, Hailey nodded.
Jay lifted her up and carried her into the bathroom. He set her on the floor and then turned on the shower and put it as hot as it could go. A few minutes later the bathroom filled with steam. Hailey was able to breathe easier and fell asleep. They stayed for 45 minutes then Jay got her changed into new clothes because hers were wet from the steam. Hailey didn't even stir when he got her dressed. She slept for two and a half more hours and woke up at 6 a.m. coughing and wheezing again. Jau quickly sat up and grabbed her wrist and took her pulse; it was racing and she was struggling to breathe.
"Comon Hails we gotta get to me," Jay said as he picked her up. He ran out to the car and buckled her in. he turned on the lights and sped to med. He called Will on the way.
J Hey we are on our way in. I think Hailey has pneumonia She is really struggling to breathe
W how are far out are you?
J 3 minutes
W how's her breathing?
J Bad she's wheezing a ton
"Your ok Hails just breathe were almost there" Jay comforted her.
They got there and Jay pulled into the ambulance bay. Natalie and Will were waiting when they arrived. Will immediately got her on the stretcher.
"Give me your keys I'll go park and meet you inside," Natalie told him when he saw how scared Hailey was.
Will got them into a room and transferred Hailey to the bed. Her coughing had finally ended so she was able to breathe easier but was still struggling. Will quickly took her vitals. He could hear wheezing when he listened to her breathing. Her oxygen was 92 which was low. He put her on oxygen and got a chest x-ray. Natalie walked in right as the x-ray was done.
"Ok Hails you have pneumonia. I'm going to give you an IV with some antibiotics and get you on a nebulizer treatment" Will told her, Hailey nodded. Jay pulled her into his lap and began to rub her back.
April came in and did the IV and got her antibiotics started.
"Get a CBC and BMP," Will told April.
April drew blood once she was done with the IV and left the room.
Will came back with the nebulizer machine and got her hooked up. It helped a lot she was able to breathe a lot easier and her oxygen was 97. Will still had her on oxygen as a precaution. After the treatment was done he got her into a room for observation.
"Ok Hails I'm going to keep you for at least 6 hours for observation," Will told her.
When they got in the room Jay's phone started ringing. It was 7;45 and he had forgotten to call Hank. He stepped into the hall to take it.
J Hey I am so sorry. I completely forgot to call. I'm at med with Hailey right now. She has pneumonia she was struggling to breathe. I had to rush her to med at 6 am. Things got pretty hectic.
V Oh my god is she ok?
J yeah she's stable for now. They gave her a nebulizer treatment and it helped.
V ok good. Stay with her. Call me if you need anything.
Jay went back into the room and sat down next to her and held her hand.
"Can you hold me?" Hailey asked.
"Of course cmere," Jaay said as he got in the bed and laid her on top of him.
"Try and get some sleep babe," Jay told her.
They both fell asleep. Hailey woke up an hour later to another coughing fit. Her monitors started going off and Natalie and April ran in.
"Your okay sweetie just breathe" Natalie soothed as she got her hooked up to another nebulizer treatment.
Will got there a few minutes later.
"What happened?" Will asked,
"She had a coughing fit and her oxygen dropped I gave her a nebulizer treatment" Natalie replied.
Natalie got her some cough medicine and she fell back asleep. Hailey woke up a few hours later. She felt a little better and was hungry. Natalie got her some soup and she ate it.
"So we're going to keep you overnight to make sure nothing else happens. If tonight goes well you'll be discharged in the morning. Once the antibiotics have been in your system for 24 hours, you should start turning the corner" Will told her.
Hailey groaned in annoyance and Jay hugged her. Jau texted Voight the update and then texted Trudy and asked her to bring them a few things from his house. Trudy got there with the things 30 minutes later. She handed Jay the bag and went up to Hailey.
"Hey kid how are you feeling?" Trudy asked.
"Awful" Hailey replied.
Im sorry kid" Trudy said as she kissed her head.
Trudy stayed for an hour and then left.
"Call me if you need anything," Trudy told them as she was leaving.
Hailey fell asleep soon after. She was wheezing on and off throughout the night but her oxygen didn't stop and Will had given her an inhaler that helped. They got discharged that morning.
"OK Hailey so I am sending you home with a nebulizer machine and inhaler. I am also writing you a prescription for antibiotics. For the inhaler use it when you have a coughing fit or start wheezing. Do the nebulizer at least three times a day. If you cough and wheeze a lot use it more. If you have any severe trouble breathing come back" Will told her.
Hailey signed the discharge papers and they left. They got home and slept for a few hours when they woke up they watched TV for the rest of the day. They had to do the nebulizer treatments 5 times and had to use her inhaler multiple times. Hailey couldn't fall asleep that night. Her anxiety spiked. Whenever she would shut her eyes she would get flashbacks of the stuff that happened to her growing up. Some of which she hadn't thought about in a while. Jay could tell she was distressed.
"You ok babe?" Jay asked.
"No flashbacks" Hailey replied.
"I'm so sorry babe. Your safe here I am never going to hurt you" Jay soothed
Four hours had passed and Hailey still couldn't fall asleep. She was scared to go to sleep. She didn't want the nightmares.
" I want to try something that'll hopefully help your anxiety and help you be able to fall asleep without nightmares," Jay told her, Hailey nodded.
"Whenever one of my military friends was in this position his wife would get him in the car and drive around for a bit. It would calm him down enough to where he was able to fall asleep and stay asleep" Jay explained "Do you want to try that?" he asked.
"Yeah I'm so tired but whenever I close my eyes all I see are memories from my childhood. I'm so sick of it" Hailey replied.
"I know I'm so sorry babe. Let's go try this and see if it helps.
They got to Jay's truck and Jay started driving 10 minutes later Hailey fell asleep in the passenger seat. Jay drove for almost two hours and then went back to his apartment. He carried her in and tucked her in. She was able to sleep through the night. She felt a lot better when she woke up. They ate breakfast and played card games since Hailey finally had enough energy to do so. This is how the rest of the week went. Hailey got better each day and needed to use the nebulizer and inhale less and less each day. By the end of the week, she didn't need either and was able to return the nebulizer machine to med. She still needed to keep her inhaler for when she got cleared to go back in the field and would be running again, just in case anything happened. Hailey was able to come in the next week but was on desk duty for a week and a half. A week and a half later Hailey was excited to be cleared and get back in the field. She was glad she was able to recover so quickly given how sick she had gotten. She had gotten lucky usually people who got as sick as she did didn't usually recover that fast. She only had to use the inhaler once after a particularly long and hard run but was fine after that. Hailey and Jay both learned a lot about each other throughout this experience and it helped Hailey to heal a little more from her trauma. Because of how Jay took care of her she was able to learn that getting sick wasn't her fault and she would no longer get hurt because of it. Jay would never hurt her. She was safe now.
