Growing up, Izuku Midoriya was far from being an ordinary kid. He spent most of his time in solitude, being raised solely by his mother. The absence of his father was a constant reminder, with his mother explaining that he was diligently toiling away in a distant land to support them. Understanding the challenges his father faced, Izuku wholeheartedly embraced this explanation and took it upon himself to assist his mother in any way he could as he grew older.
The initial indication that this young boy was extraordinary became evident when he displayed qualities that set him apart from his peers. Unlike most children, Izuku did not pose any disciplinary issues or cause his mother to constantly worry about his academic performance or completion of homework. On the contrary, he exhibited a strong sense of responsibility and dedication towards his studies. In fact, Midoriya frequently found himself re-reading his textbooks multiple times simply because he had exhausted all other reading materials available at home. Even at such a young age, his curiosity knew no bounds, and he consistently sought to expand his knowledge beyond what his classmates were interested in.
Izuku stood out from his friends who were always engrossed in conversations about the latest game system or video game. Instead, he would passionately talk about the book he longed to purchase. His love for reading ran so deep that whenever his mother asked him what he wanted as a gift, his answer would always be books. As he progressed through the final years of middle school, Izuku's room became a sanctuary of knowledge, adorned with three bookshelves filled to the brim with books that he devoured from cover to cover. His teachers considered him a blessing, knowing that having Izuku in their class meant having a student who could assist both the teacher and their fellow classmates.
If this were an ordinary world, Izuku would have been hailed as the epitome of excellence, the shining star that everyone aspired to be. However, this world was far from ordinary. It was a world where a remarkable phenomenon had been unearthed, forever altering the course of humanity. This phenomenon was known as a Quirk - an innate ability that bestowed extraordinary powers upon its possessors, almost akin to superpowers. Thanks to the discovery of Quirks many years ago, the people of this world now had two distinct paths to choose from: becoming a professional hero or embracing the path of a professional villain.
The determination of this fact was made through a thorough medical examination and a series of x-rays when Izuku was just eight years old. It was discovered that there are individuals who are actually born without any special abilities, known as quirks. These unfortunate individuals faced a much more challenging and difficult life as they were often subjected to discrimination and considered less important than others. They were labeled as the quirkless. Unfortunately, Izuku Midoriya was found to be one of them after his medical exams. The doctor explained that extensive medical research had revealed a unique characteristic in individuals with quirks - they would have one less joint in the bones of their foot. However, Izuku's X-ray did not show this characteristic, indicating that he did not possess a quirk.
Why would it make a difference? His mother didn't care whether he had a quirk or not; she loved her precious boy unconditionally. She herself had a weak telekinesis quirk, and his father had a feeble fire-breathing quirk. Nothing about their abilities was extraordinary or showy, so the idea of becoming a professional hero was never even considered. However, Izuku was an avid admirer of one specific Hero - All Might, the symbol of peace. Surprisingly, his childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo shared the same admiration for the hero, which brought them closer together. It didn't matter that their mothers were best friends from their own childhoods.
For several years, this had been the usual scenario until it was discovered that Izuku lacked a quirk. From that point on, Katsuki's demeanor grew even harsher as she relentlessly attempted to dissuade Izuku from pursuing his dream of becoming a hero, just like his idol. Katsuki frequently emphasized the vulnerability of someone without a quirk, especially when faced with villains who had no qualms about using their powers to harm or even kill others. He persistently tried to make Izuku understand that he would be risking his life for an unattainable aspiration. However, it was during their last year of middle school when one of Katsuki's two friends uttered something that left the entire class in utter shock.
"Hey, Deku, you are such a stupid nerd, but without a quirk you are worthless, you want to be a hero so much, that I will do you a favor and tell you how you can be one since you want to be one so much, why don't you climb up to the school rooftop, and take a swan dive from the top, and pray that you get born with a quirk in your next life." That was more than enough to push Katsuki into telling her friend to shut the hell up and never say something like that to anyone, he pointed out that yes he had a quirk but his quirk was not exactly that powerful either, so he had no room to shame anyone, and Izuku unlike him actually had the best grades in their year, so chances are he could be something great, it just happens that it would not be a hero.
Izuku expressed his gratitude towards his friend for defending him, although he understood that his friend's words implied a suggestion of self-harm. However, Izuku was well aware of the importance of his own life and had no intention of taking such drastic measures. He reassured Katsuki that there was no need to worry, as he would never consider an easy way out like All Might would never do. Izuku greatly admired All Might for his strength and intelligence, and if he couldn't become a hero due to his lack of a quirk, he would find another path to fulfill his heroic aspirations. When Katsuki questioned how this was possible, Izuku's response challenged people's misconceptions about heroes. He reminded them that before quirks became widely known, some heroes didn't possess any special abilities.
Izuku made a life-changing decision during his final year of middle school. He embarked on a journey to study martial arts, enrolling in every available class. Surprisingly, his remarkable ability to comprehend and absorb knowledge made mastering each form a breeze. As he entered high school, whispers began to circulate among his peers. How could someone supposedly quirkless possess such an impressive repertoire of martial arts skills? Not only that, but Izuku consistently achieved top grades year after year. These extraordinary achievements left people questioning if there was something extraordinary hidden within him, a quirk that defied conventional medical examinations.
Izuku paid no mind to gossip or the opinions of others. What truly mattered to him was his unwavering commitment to becoming a hero, a defender of the defenseless, someone who would lend a helping hand with a beaming smile. As he approached his last year of high school, he refused to let go of his dream. It had become such an integral part of his existence that he developed a habit of observing professional heroes in action, and astonishingly, he could learn from them just by watching. Even his own mother was astounded by his ability.
With just one glance, he possessed the uncanny ability to grasp the idiosyncrasies of those he observed flawlessly. He effortlessly comprehended the potential and limitations of each quirk, swiftly devising strategies to enhance and harness their powers. Whether it was a heroic or villainous confrontation captured on video, he absorbed the intricacies of every individual's quirk, meticulously documenting his findings in his notebook. As he avidly watched the news and scoured the internet, he diligently filled his twenty-fifth notebook with copious notes and detailed information about the quirks exhibited by both heroes and villains.
At first, his mother dismissed his claims, thinking he was just another obsessed fan of those professional heroes. But then, Izuku challenged her to use her quirk and make something float toward her. The moment she did, Izuku's eyes widened with realization. He quickly grabbed a sheet of paper and meticulously noted down every detail he observed while watching his mother's quirk in action, just like he did when studying the heroes' battles on video. When Inko read what her son had written, she was left speechless. He was right all along. Her quirk possessed incredible abilities that she had never even considered. It not only had strengths she knew of but also hidden potential to become even stronger.
Inko couldn't help but tease Izuku, saying that if he didn't become a hero, he could still contribute by becoming a quirk trainer to help heroes become even stronger. Within just a few months, Inko's quirk abilities improved drastically. She could effortlessly move objects around her home, regardless of the distance. It was truly remarkable to her. Over the years, Inko had dedicated herself to studying and observing people with quirks. As a result, she had amassed a remarkable collection of notebooks. Each one was a treasure trove of knowledge. If these notebooks fell into the hands of heroes, they would instantly gain valuable insights on how to defeat villains more effectively. Unfortunately, the same applied to villains. They could exploit the weaknesses and training techniques outlined in the notebooks to their advantage. The information within these pages had the power to shape the destiny of both heroes and villains alike.
They both made a pact to keep this information under wraps as he entered his final year of high school. The last thing they wanted was for anyone to try and obtain those notebooks, whether through buying them or resorting to threats. As for his future, Izuku, much to the amusement of his classmates, boldly declared on his career aptitude quiz that he intended to join UA. Despite the passing years, Izuku remained steadfast in his ambition to become a hero. Their teacher would soon provide them with the results of their career aptitude quizzes, which would help guide them toward the most suitable career paths.
The teacher's gesture seemed utterly pointless as he held the results of the career aptitude exam in one hand and grinned. "You know what, class? I was about to hand out these sheets that could have helped each and every one of you choose a promising career. But let's be honest, there's no real need for that. Each and every one of you has already chosen the path of a hero, just as we all expected." With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the sheets into the air, treating them like mere confetti at a celebration. "In fact, two of your classmates have even decided to take the entrance exam for UA, our very own Katsuki Bakugo and Izuku Midoriya. They're going to give the next UA entrance exam a shot!"
It was common knowledge that Katsuki would undoubtedly attempt to pass the exam. His quirk allowed his sweat to transform into nitroglycerin, granting him explosive abilities at will. However, what truly surprised everyone was that Izuku, the class nerd, also decided to apply. This caused the rest of the class to burst into uncontrollable laughter, resulting in some of them even falling off their seats.
Despite being aware of his classmates' lack of faith in his abilities and enduring years of bullying from two of Bakugo's friends, Izuku remained unfazed. The opinions of others held no significance to him. He was determined to achieve his dreams, even if the entire world mocked him. His unwavering desire to protect and assist others was no less than that of his idol, inspiring him to pursue his goals relentlessly.
As he stepped out of the classroom, a sudden realization struck him - he had to hurry or risk being late for his martial arts lesson. Swiftly, he excused himself and explained the urgency to his teacher, who understood the situation perfectly. The teacher even warned him about the recent surge in villain activities, which had been making headlines for some inexplicable reason. Izuku couldn't help but connect it to the epic clash between All Might and the notorious villain All For One. Walking through the bustling streets and passing under an adjacent road, he suddenly heard a peculiar sound emanating from a drain. To his surprise, a slimy and menacing substance emerged from it, fixating its gaze upon him.
As Izuku laid eyes on the slimy substance, it dawned on him that it was the result of a peculiar quirk - one that could alter a person's physical state and appearance. It was evident that the individual responsible for this was a villain, as he was concealing himself for some unknown purpose. "Listen, young one, I apologize for this inconvenience, but I must hide. I never anticipated his presence in this town. If you agree not to put up a fight, I promise to make this process as painless as possible. Unfortunately, with him around, I have no other option but to take over your body."
Just as the slime villain was on the verge of snatching Izuku, our hero swiftly exploited the one vulnerability this particular quirk possessed. He cleverly unleashed a torrent of dirt, temporarily blinding the villain and provoking a furious scream. However, the villain's rage was short-lived as his worst nightmare materialized behind him. A man gracefully descended, announcing his arrival with the iconic catchphrase, "Never fear, for I am here!" It was none other than All Might, Izuku's idol. With a single clap of his hand, All Might unleashed a mighty shockwave of wind, incapacitating the villain. Displaying incredible speed and strength, he effortlessly captured the slime villain by trapping it inside an empty soda bottle.
Fear not, young one! I shall ensure that this villain is handed over to the authorities, guaranteeing your safety from any future threats. I sincerely hope that you are unharmed after this ordeal. All Might's face beamed with a smile as he reassured Izuku, who couldn't contain his excitement at being in the presence of his idol. In fact, he even mustered the courage to ask for All Might's autograph. To his delight, All Might gladly obliged, unknowingly signing one of Izuku's quirk notebooks. "I'm always here to lend a helping hand. Take care on your way home, and I'm relieved to see that you weren't harmed by that despicable villain's actions." As All Might tucked the bottle into his pocket and swiftly departed, Izuku desperately wanted to warn him about the potential danger of carrying it that way. Alas, he had no opportunity to do so, as All Might vanished in a flash.
Upon arriving at his martial arts class, Izuku's teacher was overjoyed to learn that he had successfully evaded an attack from a villain unscathed. To his teacher, Izuku was the shining star of the dojo, filling him with immense pride. As he strolled back home, he couldn't help but notice the distant explosions that echoed the sound of Katsuki utilizing her quirk. Intrigued, he followed the noise, only to be taken aback by the sight of the slime villain ensnaring Katsuki, attempting to seize control of her body. Despite the perilous situation, Katsuki valiantly fought back, desperately clutching at the villain's floating eyeballs. Astonishingly, there were several pro heroes present, yet they stood idly by, offering no assistance.
Izuku was well aware that he needed to take action in order to rescue Katsuki. Determined, he quickly seized a bag of flour that had been carelessly dropped on the street and opened it. However, the villain saw through this trick and diverted his attention away from the flour. Realizing that his initial plan wouldn't work, Izuku spotted a child holding a spray can of paint and another person who seemed to be a smoker with a lighter. Without wasting a moment, he approached them and urgently requested the can and lighter, fully aware that time was running out.
With the can and lighter in his possession, Izuku dashed towards the villain, ingeniously combining the two items to create a makeshift flamethrower. The sight of the flames startled the villain, causing it to retreat and inadvertently causing Katsuki's unconscious body to fall to the ground. Reacting swiftly, Izuku swiftly scooped up his childhood friend and hurled her towards one of the heroes nearby, who effortlessly caught her.
As fate would have it, Izuku found himself in the midst of another perilous situation. Just as he thought all hope was lost, he heard that familiar catchphrase echoing through the air. All Might had arrived, landing near them with a resounding thud. With a single powerful punch, he swiftly incapacitated the grinning villain once more. However, this time, All Might took extra precautions by trapping the villain in a much sturdier container, having learned from his previous mistake of using a discarded soda bottle.
All Might's attention then turned to Izuku, his expression filled with concern. As he approached the young man, he shook his head in disapproval. "This is the second time your life has been endangered by a villain's actions," he remarked sternly. "We really need to have a serious discussion about your reckless behavior. Come, walk with me to the nearest police station. I'll hand over this slime ball to the authorities, and we can talk about your actions along the way."
As he strolled along, a wave of embarrassment washed over him. His idol, All Might, had deemed him reckless, and he felt the need to explain himself. "All Might, I understand that without a quirk, I may not have been able to do much to help. But I couldn't just stand idly by and watch my childhood friend get killed by that villain. So, without thinking, I acted on pure impulse to try and save their life. I apologize if you see me as a foolish and reckless individual, but my friend's safety was my top priority, even if it meant putting myself in harm's way." All Might remained silent as they made their way to the police station. Upon arrival, he calmly informed the officer that the bottle he handed over contained a dangerous villain, emphasizing the need for an airtight container to prevent escape. The police expressed their gratitude to All Might, leaving the young man, Izuku, anxious that his idol might not only be disappointed but also angry with him.
All Might gazed at him, a warm smile spreading across his face. "Izuku, I must say, I am not the least bit disappointed or angry with you. In fact, I am utterly amazed by your actions. While some may perceive them as reckless, I see them as the courageous acts of a true hero in the making. It's even more remarkable considering you don't possess a quirk. Even in the heat of the moment, you displayed intelligence by rescuing your friend from the clutches of a villain, despite the presence of other heroes who chose to do nothing. I believe it's only fitting that I accompany you home, not only to meet your mother and personally convey my admiration, but also to offer guidance on your potential future as a hero. Your actions today have truly left a lasting impression on me."
Walking back to meet his mom with his idol, Izuku couldn't help but feel like he had hit the jackpot. It was a delightful surprise for both him and his mother when they saw who was accompanying him, especially considering they thought he was coming back from his martial arts class. As they strolled along, All Might couldn't contain his curiosity and asked Izuku how he knew that his plan would work against the villain. To All Might's astonishment, Izuku spilled all the details he had gathered about the slime quirk that the villain possessed, including its weaknesses. All Might couldn't help but be impressed by Izuku's ability to comprehend the villain's quirk, especially since it was their first encounter. However, he couldn't help but wonder why Izuku hadn't mentioned that the villain could escape just like he did. Izuku explained that he never got the chance to mention it; All Might had leaped away before he could inform him that the cap on the soda bottle wasn't tightly screwed on. This allowed the villain to open the bottle, making it slippery enough to slip out of Izuku's pocket and fall to the ground.
All Might couldn't help but feel a wave of embarrassment wash over him. He realized that his haste had caused this mishap. When he leaped, he was absolutely certain that the cap was securely fastened. However, the recent turn of events proved otherwise. To add insult to injury, Izuku, with just a quick glance, seemed to have already figured out what had happened.
Izuku gently knocked on the front door of their humble apartment, the place he and his mother called home. Inko's surprise was evident when she saw her son standing there, accompanied by the very symbol of peace himself. She couldn't help but wonder if her son was in some sort of trouble for such a revered hero to visit their modest abode.
As soon as she welcomed him into their home, she expressed her apologies if her son had caused any inconvenience. All Might couldn't help but burst into laughter upon hearing her words. "Ma'am, I didn't come here to inform you that your son caused any trouble. On the contrary, your son's selfless and clever actions saved the life of his childhood friend from the clutches of a villain. I didn't want to scold him or tell you that he did something wrong. Instead, my purpose here was to commend you for raising such a promising young hero. In fact, I was contemplating asking for your permission to consider Izuku as my student and potentially my successor in the future. After nearly fifty years of being a hero, I must admit that I am not as strong and capable as I once was. Today's mistakes have made me realize that it might be best for me to retire in the near future."
When Inko inquired about his retirement plans, he decided to reveal the injury he sustained during a battle with one of the most formidable villains he had ever faced. "This injury, caused by that villain, cannot be fully healed with current medical techniques," he explained. "I am currently fighting at only one-third of my true capacity. Considering the danger I faced and the potential consequences, I believe it's wise for me to consider retiring as a hero. That's why I wanted to ask for your permission to train your son. Despite not having a quirk, he displayed true heroism that left a lasting impression on me. I want him to receive my training and, if he agrees, even inherit my quirk."
Inko was completely unaware of the existence of quirks that could be inherited from someone else. It was a revelation that caught her completely off guard. All Might, realizing that he had to explain everything, decided to start by revealing his own quirk. He hoped that Inko would keep his secret, or at least that was his wish. "Allow me to introduce myself, I am Toshinori Yagi. Similar to your son, I was also born without a quirk. However, everything changed when I met my mentor. She trained me and passed her quirk onto me. This quirk is called 'One For All' and it is a power stockpile quirk that can be passed down from one person to another. My hope is that your son will become the next bearer of this quirk, which has been passed down through generations of heroes. It is our lifelong mission to defeat the villain who injured me, known as All For One."
